I enjoyed last Thursday’s mayoral debate at our City Library.

There seemed to be no obvious groups supporting a particular candidate.

Applause was gained as to how the individual candidates responded to the various questions posed by the chair.

What I really enjoyed was when the Mayor and Cr Findlay demonstrated their passionate belief in what was the best way forward for the future of our city.

Cr McCann had a quieter but no less sincere approach in his response to questions.

The audience enjoyed the showmanship of Mr McCann as he grabbed every opportunity to test the chair’s latitude and further his cause.

The difficulty for the incoming Council and its leader will be to achieve the balance between the economic needs of our city against the very real needs of the growing numbers of the unemployed and those on low incomes in Palmerston North and its surrounds.

Crs McCann and Findlay indicated they have lengthy previous experience of running large businesses. The mayor of course heads the governance of the large business that our city council undoubtedly is.

The trick for whichever candidate is elected will be to get the balance right.

All in all the entire debate was enjoyable and informative.

More than free food

By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Running a food bank or food store is not a misguided attempt to tackle poverty, but a service that fills an immediate need for impoverished and hungry Kiwis, says a local co-ordinator.

Rebecca Culver runs Just Zilch, Palmerston North’s free food store, and says the charitable organisation fills a gap in our community where surplus food is being wasted and people are going hungry.

Her comments follow publication of a UK article that describes food centres as little more than a dumping ground for corporate donors and wellmeaning volunteers who like to convince themselves they are helping the ‘‘needy’’. ‘‘Just Zilch is an asset to the community, providing an alternative for food to those who feel they are out of options,’’ said Ms Culver. ‘‘We are currently still the only operating free store in New Zealand and our numbers are growing.’’

Palmerston North also has two food banks operated by the Salvation Army and Methodist Social Services.

The need for these shops is growing, according to research by Oxfam, which predicts more than one billion people will soon be living without enough food.

Ms Culver said when 180 people come to the store in one day, you realise how large the need is. ‘‘There is enough food to feed everyone — it’s just not being distributed or utilised efficiently,’’ she added.

Food banks were established in the 1980s to supplement New

Zealand’s welfare system, and underwent significant growth during the 1990s.

Calls for the government to meet this increasing demand led to changes in assistance programmes in 1994. ‘‘Sometimes our clients can’t even get government help — one woman who came to Palmerston North to study her masters had a baby and was unable to finish within the time of her scholarship. ‘‘It ran out so she has completed her thesis and made use of Just Zilch’s services in

order to survive,’’ Ms Culver explained.

Just Zilch sees an average of 120 people each day, an increase from 80 in the first year and 99 in the second. ‘‘We get referrals from numerous organisations including budgeting services, Work and Income, and other food banks. There is no doubt in my mind that Just Zilch is needed in Palmerston North,’’ Ms Culver said. ‘‘For me it’s about building relationships and from there we’ve gained the right to offer further advice about how to overcome these hard situations.’’

By ROB MILDON There’s a huge pile of toys in the middle of a Rongotea School classroom. Pupils are eagerly sorting through it, debating which toy goes into what pile. It’s the last day of term, and the school has to get all the donated goods into boxes and ready to be shipped off before the bell rings.

The toy boxes are for Operation Christmas Child, organised by Samaritan’s Purse, and their destination is impoverished children in Vanuatu. The Rongotea community and its children have all rallied around the cause; this towering collection of toys and books is all their doing. ‘‘We’ve had the most amazing response,’’ said acting principal Cheryl Tornquist. ‘‘It’s great that the children have decided to do this.’’

The school first undertook the

scheme in 2009, after the Samoan tsunami, and all the boxes went there as part of disaster relief efforts.

Jaden McManus donated a soft toy monkey, inspired by the story of a girl who’d never had a teddy bear. When her gift box contained one, Jaden related,‘‘she wouldn’t let go of it for two days. Everyone deserves something like that.’’

In addition to filling the boxes, the school has to get them to Vanuatu as well. At $9, that postage bill racks up quickly.

Donations have come in to help, but the Year 1 and 2 children took a chunk out of the cost by making bath salts and selling them to the community.

This is the third time the school has joined in on the biennial project; its record so far is 14 boxes. A mark soon to be broken? It’s obvious from the children’s fervour that they’re keen to see it fall.

Review puts spotlight on mental health patients

By ALECIA ROUSSEAU A report focusing on high-risk mental health and addiction patients has found 11 people under the care of the Midcental District Health Board died by suspected suicide or were involved in serious adverse events (SAEs).

The study by the Health Quality and Safety Commission, released last week, looked at SAEs which were reported from July 1, 2012 until July this year. It found that 177 incidents occurred nationwide — most of which took place in the community. About 134 suspected suicides occurred within 28 days of patients having contact with mental health and addiction services. ‘‘This report is the commission’s first step towards engaging with the challenging problem of harm to patients of mental health and addictions services,’’ said Dr Janice Wilson, chief executive of the commission.

This is the commission’s first report that looks specifically into mental health reportable events.

MDHB operations director for specialist community and regional services Nicholas Glubb said the information provided a chance for staff to learn by increasing awareness. ‘‘As an outcome of reviewing these events, strategies are put in place to

better manage the risk of an adverse event as early as possible.’’

Being able to implement best practice changes to manage high risk clients was key, he added. ‘‘The MDHB’s Mental Health Service takes a robust approach to the identification and continuous management of high risk clients, with prompt access to initial assessments including a thorough risk assessment.’’

The report states in many cases it is hard to determine the direct cause of suspected suicide, which makes up a large proportion of reported SAEs. ‘‘Our clinical staff are trained to provide thorough clinical assessments including a clinical risk assessment as part of meeting the needs of high risk clients,’’ Mr Glubb said. ‘‘While there is a strong focus on ensuring that high risk clients under the care of the secondary service are well managed, there is also considerable attention across the district given to early identification and support to individuals at risk of suicide by the primary and NGO sector.’’

The commission has agreed ‘‘in principle’’ to a two-year partnership with the Ministry of Health to develop a trial for a review that will better identify contributing factors or patterns of suicidal behaviour.

RESCUE HELICOPTER CALL-OUTS About 3pm last Friday, the Palmerston North Rescue Helicopter responded to a call to Mangamahu, north of Wanganui, where a Taupo man in his 50s had leg injuries after falling from a horse. The man was one of a team of riders working a mob of young horses. The patient’s leg was splinted by the onboard St John Ambulance advanced paramedic before being flown to Palmerston North Hospital, as poor weather prevented access to Wanganui Hospital.

■ Just after noon on Saturday, the helicopter responded to the Karapoti Motocross track in the Akatawara Valley north of Upper Hutt where two riders were seriously injured in a head-on collision between a quad bike and a motocross bike.

Working in concert with the Wellington Life Flight Air Ambulance, on-board paramedics provided the emergency care needed by each of the patients. Both patients were then airlifted directly to the Wellington Hospital rooftop helipad with life-threatening injuries.

eastern slopes of Mount Ruapehu at about noon Sunday, where a Whangaparaoa woman in her 20s had suffered a badly broken leg in a skiing accident after climbing above the Tukino Ski Field.

The group skiing with the patient immobilised her fractured leg and comfort her until the helicopter arrived. The paramedics were landed at the scene, at an altitude of nearly 2000m in calm conditions, and stabilised the patient before she was airlifted to Wanganui Hospital.

Youngsters take AIM at sporting excellence Palmerston North schools brought home plenty of sporting glory from the recent AIMS Games in Tauranga.

The annual tournament features dozens of school teams from throughout New Zealand, along with some from Australia, chasing championships in 16 sports.

Normal, won a garland of medals in the pool, including two gold and a silver and bronze. He set a Games record for the 100m butterfly and six Manawatu records now have his name on them.

His schoolmates in the girls’ football, doubles tennis and squash, along with the boys’ singles tennis and badminton, all picked up silver medals.

Ross Intermediate’s Kate Blincoe topped her personal best by 11 seconds when second in her 200m swimming event.

Sarah Munn and Charlotte Wilson saw off higher-seeded opponents in the doubles tennis to claim a bronze medal while Kaitlyn Watts relived last year’s glory by defending her squash gold.

PNBHS top school

By ALECIA ROUSSEAU Palmerston North Boys’ High School came out on top at this year’s 2013 New Zealand National Schools Road Cycling Championships.

Winning top boys’ school for 2013, the three-day event pushed the young cyclists to their limit.

The first day was held at Koputaroa School in Levin in blustery weather.

More than 160 teams from across the country cycled against the winds with local schools shining on the day.

Palmerston North Girls’ Junior A won the U16 Girls Summers cup with a time of 29:16.56. Palmerston North Boys’ also won the U16 Boys Paul Matthews Cup. The second day took the young riders

over to Victoria Park in Feilding. The bad weather followed but PNBHS continued to dominate, winning gold and bronze in the U16 division.

The championships were then wrapped up in a points race on the final day at Manfeild. Massey High student Renee Wootton claimed the girls national title for U20 — making it her second national title in two days. ‘‘It was really tough racing out there today with fierce competition from top riders,’’ she said. ‘‘Despite the weather it was a fantastic weekend and I am very proud to win these events in my last year of school racing.’’

By NICI SCOTT-SAVAGE, Methodist Social Services In an era where work and life demands are many, self-care often takes a back seat.

We are often at the very end of the long list of ‘‘to dos’’.

Writing this article is a timely reminder that in order to ‘‘do’’ well, we need to ‘‘be’’ well.

I like to think of self care in terms of the KISS (Keep It Simple, Stupid) principle. It’s the little things that make the difference. Here are some of the top KISS principles when applied to self care: ■ Breathe well from your diaphragm. Try breathing through a straw; this simple experiment will tell you how well you are breathing or how well you are not.

■ Drink filtered water where possible. Your body needs water to function well.

Remember that your brain is 75 per cent water; a dehydrated body does not function well. To roughly calculate how much water you need in a day, take your body weight in kilos, and multiply by 0.033. For example, if you are 65kg, you need a minimum of 2.1 litres of water a day.

■ Sleep well. Get to bed before 10pm. If you are up consistently later than that your body is missing out on physical repair.

■ Exercise — get out and move. This can be as simple

■ Find ways to smile and laugh in your day.

■ When you have a lot going on, relaxation becomes even more important. Listen to music, do nothing (yes, nothing), meditate, pray, do breathing or relaxation exercises, practice mindfulness, be present with yourself, have good sex (this fits into smile, and exercise too), read a book in the sun (Vitamin D is good for you — just not too long).

■ Connect with friends and family. Having life outside work is important for self care.

Self care can be one of those in the ‘too-hard box’ things, but it need not be.

ver the past several weeks we’ve been exploring with you some of what the Reformed Church is all about.

We’ve looked at the reasons we had for putting up a new building, the content of our worship services, the multi-generational character of our congregation, our desire to be a service to our community, and our love of the Bible. This week we thought we’d let some of our people tell you what they especially love about the church.

Shop boosts Street Van’s reach

By ROB MILDON The Palmerston North Street Van exists to help the public, and conversely needs the public to help it exist.

The annual street appeal is always a great success, but the organisation decided to go one step further, and in January opened an op-shop at 62 Manawatu Street.

The brisk trade in second-hand clothes, books, bric-a-brac and even furniture contributes $1200 each month to the Street Van’s upkeep, education programmes and supporting young people.

You might think the shop’s location at the bottom of Hokowhitu wouldn’t be especially good for sales, but the moment you put out an ‘‘op-shop’’ sign it becomes a retail destination, says Adrian Broad, funding development administrator for the Street Van. ‘‘The op-shoppers do a circuit, and the locals don’t have to go all the way into town to shop,’’ he says. ‘‘Hokowhitu residents

have been really pleased to see us.’’

There’s a surprising amount of foot traffic as well, mostly from people on their way to or from the riverside walkway.

Every item in the shop has been given to the shop by people keen to help. ‘‘It’s amazing what’s been donated.

There’s boxes and boxes of stuff. It’s overwhelming,’’ Mr Broad says.

Op-shops are an aspect of recycling, too, he says. They give new life to something that might otherwise get binned — or not; he reckons people’s clothing turnover is higher these days, and the shop has seen some reasonably new, even label, goods. ‘‘Who would know whether it’s been bought from an op-shop or a department store,’’ Mr Broad says. ‘‘I’m sure people get real bargains, but then, that’s what op-shops are all about.’’

Voting papers are out and the race is on with local body elections closing at 12 noon Saturday October 12.

As you cast your eye over your voting papers, make sure you watch out for Horizons Regional Council candidates and pick who best represents your opinion about how our land, air and water should be managed.

Horizons electoral officer Craig Grant says Horizons received 25 nominations for twelve council seats.

“Of the 25 candidates, we have nine existing councillors standing again and there is plenty of fresh blood to add to the mix,” says Mr Grant.

“There will be an election in every constituency apart from Horowhenua-Kairanga as we only received two nominations for

Woolly nightshade conquered in Tararua After spotting the pesky plant, woolly nightshade, on the side of the road earlier this year, Horizons Regional Council’s pest plant team is pleased to report all known sites of the plant are now controlled.

Until this point, woolly nightshade had not been noticed in the southern Tararua and pest plant management officer Jack Keast says the team wanted to get on top of it as soon as possible.

“Woolly nightshade is a massive problem as it invades pastures and bush blocks, forming dense clusters which prevent anything else from growing,” he says.

“On top of that, it can cause asthmatic reactions and skin rashes in humans and is also poisonous to stock.”

Closer inspection of the site uncovered two large trees within the property and an area of seedlings beneath the trees.

“As the plant was clearly spreading we decided a survey should be carried out of the area surrounding the site as soon as possible,” says Mr Keast.

After walking every street of northern Pahiatua, looking for woolly nightshade in the gardens of every section, the team found six more properties with the plant within a 500 metre radius of the original site.

“We also delivered 300 flyers to all properties in northern Pahiatua to raise awareness of woolly nightshade and encourage residents to be pro-active in ringing Horizons to get rid of it. Of the six confirmed sites that we found, four of them responded to the flyer and contacted us to remove the plant.

“The last two landowners were given a notice stating we believed that they had woolly nightshade and I could come on a certain

date to remove the plants. Both landowners responded to this letter and asked me to do so, which meant we achieved total control over known woolly nightshade sites in Tararua,” he says.

Woolly nightshade has a distinctive smell, large soft light-green leaves, small purple flowers and green and yellow berries.

Community planting at Titoki Reserve a success

The Titoki Reserve in the Summerhill Drive area has received yet another facelift.

On September 15, large numbers of community volunteers turned out for a day of planting karamu, manuka, kahikatea, flax and other eco-sourced native plant species.

The planting day was a partnership between the Green Corridors group, with support from PNCC and Horizons staff, and the local branch of Ricoh New Zealand, a printing and copying company committed to giving back for sustainability.

There has been a partnership between the two groups for the past three years.

Thanks to the combination of private investment and volunteer support, the Lower Titoki area plantings have been a real success. At this point, Green Corridors volunteers are in the home stretch, filling gaps in previous plantings of the drainage reserve. Trees planted previously are really taking hold.

The area is beginning to look amazing, and provides great walks for the local community. The ongoing Summerhill drainage plantings offer a wide range of other environmental and community benefits, too. They help stabilise the drainage edges; they help prevent

nutrient run-off; and they provide habitat for a wide range of bird species. The community planting days also increase local ownership and create a sense of neighbourhood pride.

Green Corridors’ long term focus is on the streams from the Tararua Ranges to the Manawatu River, namely the Turitea and Kahuterawa Stream valleys and tributaries.

Since 2001, Green Corridors has planted over 120,000 eco-sourced native plants in 15ha of gullies in the Summerhill area and 10ha of riparian margin along the Turitea Stream.

The art of Dannevirke The Dannevirke Art Society is holding its annual art exhibition from October 11-20 to coincide with the Dannevirke Spring Festival.

Many of the works were created during the society’s ‘‘Artists in Action’’ programme, where the public could visit the clubrooms to see works of art being created.

During the opening from 5pm on October 11, the award trophy for the Rosebowl and Heather Foote painting competitions will be presented.

Palmerston North painter Jack Register is the judge.

Maurice Brooks has donated one of his original paintings to the society and a lucky member of the public will receive it at the opening (the draw is made from door sale tickets).

Now the memory and legend lives on in a special concert event, The Orchestral Sessions, featuring a 15-piece orchestra and one of the most-successful Elvis impersonators, Max Pellicano.

The Elvis to The Max show is touring New Zealand this month, coming to the Regent on Broadway on Monday at 8pm.

Impersonators need to sound like the real thing and Pellicano has worked hard at that. The voice is important, as is knowing how to become the man himself on stage.

There are lots of Elvis impersonators but Max Pellicano is considered as the best.

In addition, his costumes worn are exact replicas made by Elvis’ tailor, Bill Bellow.

Fluffy surface conceals serious themes MOVIE REVIEW One Direction: This is Us (PG) Downtown Cinemas 92 minutes Reviewed by Alecia Rousseau On viewing this movie I wasn’t expecting much. A documentary-style flick about a British boy-band is not one that usually appeals but I was pleasantly surprised by the genuineness of the story.

Following five young men — Niall, Zayn, Liam, Harry and Louis — from their debut on X Factor to playing in front of 65,000 fans, this ‘‘intimate, all-access’’ look provides an insight into the cheeky, playful guys in the incredibly famous group.

Young female fans won’t be at all disappointed — shirtless guys, dance moves, pranks and live performances are scattered throughout the film. Underlying themes about children leaving the nest and the impact stardom has on families provides substance, so those who aren’t die-hard fans can find something to appreciate. The struggles of growing up too quickly, having to cope with stardom and building dependable friendships is also covered.

The graphics used in their stage shows were amusing and it was nice to see the word ‘Christchurch’ flashing in the background but, because of the 3D effects, this was also distracting. The repetitiveness of the performances were a little dull if you weren’t singing it word for word, but the slight rocky tone made it tolerable.

The most refreshing part of this musical biography was seeing how the men have remained modest about their success, wanting to be remembered as a band that had fun and never took themselves too seriously. The only thing I’m left wondering is, what is it about these guys that makes young women cry, scream and faint at the sight of them? And for those who say they have not yet succumbed to the charm of One Direction, you’ll at least leave the movie knowing which young man your daughter’s claiming as her boyfriend.

Things to think about when selling your property With the first whiff of summer in the air, some homeowners will be sprucing up their houses to put on the market.

If you decide to sell your property through a real estate agent, make sure they are the best person for the job.

You’ll be inviting them into your home, trusting them with your possessions and relying on them to negotiate on your behalf, so you need someone you can trust. Do some research — friends, family and workmates are good places to start.

Your chosen agent will ask you to sign a written agreement.

Make sure they give you a copy of the Residential Property Agency Agreements Guide to read and digest before you sign.

Your agency agreement is a legally binding contract.

Breaching it, even if you didn’t realise, can be an expensive mistake, so getting legal advice is also a good idea. It’s always worth negotiating on the terms of your agreement.

Pay particular attention to the following: ■ Agent’s commission: Be clear on what you will have to pay the agent, when you will have to pay and how the payment will be calculated.

Commission usually includes a flat fee and a percentage of the sale price, plus GST. ■ Additional expenses: Be aware of anything else you need to pay for, like advertising. The agent has to tell you in writing

about any discounts or rebate they receive on any of the services they provide for you.

You may be able to negotiate splitting this.

■ Details listed about your property: Be sure these are factual and accurate, otherwise you could be open to legal action. Remember you should

have consents and permits for any work you have done to the property.

■ Type of agreement — there are two: A sole agency or exclusive agreement means that you give one agency the right to sell your property for a set time.

A general agency agreement means that you can use several agencies at once, or even sell it yourself. Don’t get caught out! If you sign up with another agency when you already have a sole agency agreement, you may have to pay commission twice.

If you’re not happy with your agent, once you’ve signed, tell your agent or their manager.

If you don’t get a satisfactory result, you can take your complaint to the Real Estate

years. Independent tests conducted in January and August of 2011, to take into account both summer and winter temperatures, proved Showerdome to be successful at lowering humidity and sustaining air temperature in the bathroom.

This greatly reduced dampness, as no steam was created outside the shower cubicle.

Study head Dr James Carson says the results highlighted the short and long term monetary benefits of owning a Showerdome. ‘‘Depending on the consumer’s use of electric heaters to preheat or dry out a bathroom, plus their use of heated towel rails, the Showerdome could save a consumer hundreds of dollars per year,’’ he says.

As well as monetary benefits, Showerdome also offers significant health benefits. The primary health benefit is that steam created from the shower is not able to flow into adjoining rooms, reducing condensation, mould, mildew and mites; creating warmer, drier, healthier homes.

According to estimates compiled by the Waikato University research paper, heating a bathroom for half an hour per day with a 2.4kW electric heater would cost about $100 per annum, while using a 0.15kW heated towel rail for 12 hours per day would cost around $156 per annum.

Showerdome also renders mirror demisters and ceiling fans redundant.

Combining all of these energy saving opportunities, installing a Showerdome may save home owners about $250 per year in energy costs alone!

Showerdome chief executive Maurice O’Reilly says the study’s findings are testament to the product’s value. ‘‘Anecdotal feedback from our customers related to savings has shown they have far less use for heaters, mirror demisters, ceiling fans, or heated towel rails, thanks to Showerdome,’’ he says. ‘‘Customers have also expressed the benefits in terms of reduced maintenance costs and reduced allergy symptoms. Many have said their wallpaper doesn’t peel anymore, mould and mildew doesn’t grow in the bathroom, and the house doesn’t feel as damp.’’

The excavator can be used for trenching and track clearing and the acquisition of a new tilt bucket is ideal for contouring metal tracks and driveways.
