School wins big prize By

Levin North School kids are national champions and have a $5000 Bosch kitchen package coming their way.

The 300 children at North School participated in the 5+ a Day Challenge, which educated and encouraged healthy eating — specifically eating five or more fresh fruit and vegetables each day.

North School’s entry ‘stood out’ from the 50 entries received from schools throughout New Zealand, according to General Manager of 5+ a Day, Paula Dudley. “We had a difficult time picking a winner but Levin North School stood out for the creative ways they got the children involved,” Ms Dudley said.

Cowardly attack on pregnant woman with toddler Levin Police describe an attack on a pregnant woman and her 2-year-old daughter in Bath Street as “cowardly” and are calling for witnesses.

On Thursday at approximately 8pm the woman, 22, was walking with her daughter in a pram near Remembrance Park towards Winchester Street when she was approached by four

people. The group of two males and two females, believed to be in their early 20s, demanded money. When the woman said she hadn’t any they grabbed the pram with the 2-year-old in it before taking the woman’s handbag as she was attempting to keep hold of the pram.

The woman suffered an arm injury. The group broke

her cellphone before running off with her purse, which contained a small amount of money. Both the woman and her daughter were traumatised by the ordeal and are being supported by family and Police.

“Those responsible will be held to full account for their disgusting actions,” said Detective Sergeant Peter Vine

of the Levin CIB. “We encourage anyone who witnessed the attack or saw a group of teenagers in the Remembrance Park and Bath Street area around 8pm on Thursday to contact Police."

Human Rights Day, from 10/12/1948, is the UN's major flag day. The Universal Declaration Of Human Rights was signed then. In 1978 it became virtually law here with the UN ICCPR and ICESCR binding treaty ratification.

Rubbish blame

In her letter to the Chronicle December 10, Christina Paton blames the council for the fact that people have been dumping rubbish illegally.

She might be quite right that the council should provide a better service, and should review the Solid Waste rate etc. But by targeting the council, she is effectively exonerating those who have dumped the rubbish. Those who have dumped the rubbish on the dunes have behaved selfishly and unreasonably.

We don’t know why they did it.

Was it because they couldn’t afford the fee? Or because they were too mean to pay the fee? Or that they are just plain selfish, and dumped it in the nearest place, or are they vandals?

So, the council might be wrong but let’s not lose sight of the fact that those who have dumped rubbish have behaved in a selfish and unreasonable manner.

Robyn feels like new woman

By TANYA WOOD Wow, just look at her now.

Robyn Smith's determination to lose weight and feel better about herself won the mum of four a 12-week, life-changing makeover worth $3000, offered by Levin-based businesses Skin Medic Ltd, Fitstop Health and Fitness Centre, NV Training and Elegance Laser and Skin Clinic. That was four months ago.

It was an almost unrecognisable woman that walked through the doors of Fitstop last week to applause and cheers from family and friends gathered to see the ‘new’ Robyn and to toast her success.

Robyn, complete with new hairstyle — a present from the judges especially for the evening celebration, said the whole experience had been “just awesome”.

“I feel fabulous, confident about life and much happier in myself. Everyone has just been blown away by the changes in me and even people in the gym who I don’t know say ‘you look fantastic’ and that’s so nice to hear.”

The 12-week package included a customised exercise and nutrition plan — six days a week hitting the treadmill and weights for an hour and a complete change of diet.

“After the first four kilos came off in a week, it kept me going, I told myself I can do this,” said Robyn, who works as a Fairfield School teacher aid. And for a girl who never wore face cream, Robyn is now a convert.

Weekly beauty treatments to even out her skin tone have left Robyn “rapt” with the improvements. “I think I look younger, anyway.”

Robyn is determined to keep up her new lifestyle, with just the odd drink.

“That was a biggie, giving up alcohol but I was determined to do it and look forward to a drink to celebrate afterwards.”

Dr Wynand Louwe, medical director of Skin Medic Ltd, said not many people were aware of their own wellness and fitness. “That was the reason for the competition, to give someone that chance and to see the transformation for themselves. We [judges] were impressed with Robyn from the start and we made the right choice. The results are great.”

A $10,000 donation from the Eastern and Central Community Trust will help pay for soundproofing, lighting and heating and completion of general upgrading of the Levin Anglican Church hall.

Any money left over from the church fundraising campaign will be used for new carpet and a fresh coat of paint for the hall which is widely used by community groups.

More than 35 church members give 50 hours of volunteer time each week. The Eastern and Central Community Trust has given $5000 to the Tokomaru School to build a fitness station and running track.

The school has already installed one fitness station and hopes to improve the physical fitness of its 60 students with additional stations and a lime-coated running track.

The Eastern and Central Community Trust is an independent, charitable trust.

A 10 per cent rise in the price of tobacco products next year means now is a good time for smokers to stop the nicotine habit. By TANYA WOOD Up to 1000 people came out to enjoy the Shannon Christmas Parade and Carnival on Saturday, especially the children who lined up to get a present from Santa and Mrs Claus in their special Shannon grotto.

However, about eight weeks ago it could have been a different story. There was no organising committee and no parade planned. Shannon resident Nina Pilkington says she wasn’t about to let that happen. She stepped into the breach and, as she says, “tapped people on the shoulder to help”.

This year’s parade took a different route, along Grey Street, while the carnival took place at the Shannon Domain, with plenty of activities, including a potato picking competition, sheep shearing demonstration, bouncy castle, mini train rides, children’s talent quest and a concert. There were also 60 stalls with food and other goods to sell.

A three-hour ‘cushion concert’, including Shannon School band, Craven Noble, The Stampede Variety Club from

Levin and Tama K Trio proved hugely popular, according to Nina. It was the inaugural tribute concert to Shannon resident Bernie Lynn who had organised many parades and died just before last year’s parade.

Nina says the plan next year is to take the parade back onto the main shopping street but keep the carnival at the domain where they could attract more stalls and activities.

“I would like to put out a huge thank you to everyone who supported the event.

It was a huge crew that put this together.”

She said without the financial support of Horowhenua District Council and local businesses, funding activities so they were free for children, the event could not have happened. Nina also wanted to acknowledge the community groups, Shannon Progressive Association, Old Folks Club and all the volunteers on the day.

The children’s talent quest was won by dance crew The Velvets with solo singers Rangimarie Hauiti second and Elizabeth Liddell third.

Pink group on a mission

By FRANKIE WEBB Horowhenua’s Pink Ladies Support Group is officially open to anyone touched by breast cancer.

“In Horowhenua this year 34 women and one man have been diagnosed with breast cancer,” group founder Margaret Martin said.

“This year I co-ordinated the national Pink Ribbon (Breast Cancer) appeal for Horowhenua and became aware we needed a support group in this area.”

Money collected at the national appeal is used to continue work by the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation through life saving early detection campaigns, research into better treatments and support for women with the disease. Margaret wanted to do something which would be specifically local, knowing that Horowhenua’s donations to the national appeal doubled those made in 2013.

Beautiful baskets are being created, with most of the input from the generosity of people and businesses in Horowhenua.

They will be given to anyone newly diagnosed with breast cancer.

“We have set up a buddy system for anyone diagnosed with breast cancer,” Margaret said.

“The buddy has gone through breast cancer and is happy to talk through it if it helps. They give their [new] buddy a basket full of goodies to brighten their day.”

The group’s first official meeting is going to be at Te Takere on February 17 and will be the third Tuesday of each month thereafter.

Tops and tabs help kids

By TANYA WOOD Don’t throw out your wine bottle screw tops, they still have an important role to play. The Lions Club of New Zealand has been raising funds from the sale of aluminium can tabs and, more latterly aluminium wine bottle screw tops, to metal recyclers, raising money for the KidneyKids of NZ charity since 1999.

Although the initiative originated as a project at Koputaroa School, there are plenty of people unaware of the Kan Tabs for Kidney Kids project, according to Levin resident Tracey Larsen.

Tracey herself only heard about it a year ago through a friend and thought it was a fantastic idea.

“Wine bottle caps just go in the bin usually, so why not put them towards a really good cause in aid of children?” she said.

She has since roped in the help of Fatboyz Bar, Cobb & Co and The Wheelhouse Bar in Levin, to keep their wine bottle caps and act as collection points for customers who bring in theirs.

“I haven’t kept a tally, I don’t have the time to count them all but there’s been a couple of bin loads so far. It’s such a simple thing for everyone to do.”

Tracey is hoping more local cafes, bars and restaurants will come on board.

Levin Waiopehu Lions Club secretary Ray Armstrong said it was fantastic that people still wanted to help.

Appeal supports Veterans Arms Levin Home for War Veterans is seeking community support for the resident’s Veterans Arms club.

The RSA-like club was established by a group of residents earlier this year. Home manager Joanna Thomson says the club is very popular with residents and their family and friends. But she explains the home needs support from the community for it to gain momentum.

“Donations to our December Trumpeter appeal will help us preserve the home’s Anzac memorabilia and add to the experience and environment of the Veterans Arms.”

She explains that the Veterans Arms has become a hub of Anzac spirit in the short time it’s been operating.

“Like the establishment of the Returned Services Association in 1916, the Veterans Arms aims to provide support and comfort for former service men and women, and all of our residents,” says Joanna.

“One of the great things about the Veterans Arms is that it is governed by the residents. Our residents make all the choices about the club from how it operates and membership, through to

Today, Levin Home continues to have a strong presence of war veterans. There are seven World War Two Veterans living at the home and 70 per cent of residents are returned service men and women.

“Levin Home is a truly unique home and we’re extremely proud of our history, and future, supporting service men and women. And, I think the community is really proud that we have this facility here in Horowhenua.”

Joanna says the home is grateful to the significant support it gets from the local community and further afield.

Doll delight for Neha NINE-YEAR-OLD Neha Sachdeva has a new doll to add to her collection after successfully guessing the name of the prize in Te Takere Heritage Community’s contest at the Christmas Market.

Neha’s mother picked Martha after her mother, but after some thought Neha had another turn and chose Annabelle, the name selected

by Horowhenua Family History Group member Gloy Deadman.

A hive of activity It is fantastic to see the youth space humming with activity. The ping pong tables, foosball and digital games are always in hot demand. We are happy to see all members of the community using the space during the day and during term time.

However, it is now the time of year when young people are out of school and looking to own their space, so we would just like to remind everyone that the youth space is for 13 to 24-years-olds.

If you are looking for something to do for the under-13s, we still have spaces in the summer reading programme. And if you are one of those over 24-year-olds, there are plenty of computers scattered around the main Te Takere space for you to use.

We would also like to take this opportunity to remind parents and caregivers that Te Horowhenua Trust does have a policy of not allowing children under the age of

eight years to be left unaccompanied in their libraries — Levin, Shannon and Foxton. This is for their own safety, particularly in Te Takere where it is a huge space to try to keep an eye on children. We cannot be responsible for children left alone and ask that parents respect this policy.

To make sure everyone gets a chance on the computers during the busy holiday period we will be reducing the session times down to one hour during the school holidays. As always, if you require longer, just ask at the service desk.

By PETER FRANKLIN Businessman Ken Gurney, of Sports World Levin, gets a huge thumbs up from his staff, Sue, Hannah and Gerald, as a great employer and community supporter.

One of the district’s longest serving retailers, Ken has been one of the most forward thinking and encouraging characters one could wish to meet.

He gives his support freely to a wide range of people and projects, including motivating other businesses to step up to the mark and promote themselves.

During the 2013 Rugby World Cup, Ken worked hard getting businesses to dress up their shop windows and add a bit of colour and flair to the town.

However, it is supporting local people that has been one of Ken’s strongest passions.

Emma Hicks, a former staff member, can testify to that. As a volunteer firefighter in the Levin brigade, Emma could be called away at any time when the fire siren sounded.

She went with Ken’s blessing because someone was in trouble. She was also given time to fundraise for a trip to the world canoe polo championships during work time.

Ken also encouraged Sue Wilks, a current staff member, to wear her St John's uniform to work during a St John fundraising appeal, and helped local sportswomen Michaela Curtis and Cathryn Finlayson to achieve their goals of representing New Zealand in hockey.

Ken was behind the push to get the annual Levin Christmas parade back on the main street.

HLC students have much to celebrate A record number of students at Horowhenua Learning Centre were recognised for their hard work and commitment at a graduation ceremony last week.

All 100 students ended the year with at least one NCEA Level in their chosen course which included professional catering, hospitality, health disability and aged support, security and computing.

According to HLC chief executive Jacqui Ferrel, the students’ achievements are made more remarkable by the fact that many started the year with no NCEA qualification and are now completing applications

She said the students had achieved merit, distinction and excellence in their studies.

friends and family for their support.”

One of HLC’s strategic objectives is to become the tertiary provider of choice in Horowhenua for young people who do not achieve at secondary school. Adults training as chefs, security guards and health care workers currently make up 79 per cent of its students.

Qualifications gained by the students are in areas where there are jobs available locally and in the wider region.

Let’s hope for better growing in New Year Digging in WALLY RICHARDS The year is quickly drawing to a close with Christmas closer than ever, making it a very busy festive time for many people.

Without further ado I would like to wish all my readers a very happy festive season and a better gardening year for the New Year.

During the year I think the highlights were reports from gardeners who placed Neem Tree Granules under their citrus trees to clean up insect problems in the trees. So simple and easy to do without out all that spraying. (No harm on the environment other than the pests.)

I wrote earlier in the year about using my Secret Strawberry Food in conjunction with Mycorrcin to obtain some super big strawberries with good flavour. Several gardeners have

reported excellent results from using the two products and getting a good number of extra big strawberries.

The poor spring weather this season has meant that many plants have not preformed as expected. A few weeks ago someone wrote to me about strange weather and hail stones with 25 times the allowed limit of aluminium in drinking water. This also applies to our gardens, as plants are greatly affected by aluminum toxicity, inhibiting root growth which slows or stops plant growth.

I have had recent reports of this happening in pasture and food crops.

Combine that with low levels of direct sunlight, caused by either clouds or haze preventing the sun’s rays from directly reaching plants, and this causes leaf colour to darken more than normal and stretching of plants making greater distance between leaves.

This is not normal and I would like to know what is going on as plants ideally require six or more hours of direct sunlight at this time of the year each day.

During the year a number of dangerous chemicals used in the home garden market were either removed or are in the process of being removed.

Others are likely to follow, removed sooner rather than later, so our honey bees and bumble bees have a better chance of survival.

I think next year is going to be very interesting.

Fields of white crosses will be planted in Horowhenua to mark the centenary of the World War I landings at Gallipoli next year. The nationwide Fields of Remembrance project is being organised locally by Adopt an Anzac, which has launched a fundraising campaign for the crosses.

A total of 188 white crosses will represent the war dead in Levin, Foxton, Shannon, Tokomaru, Moutoa and Manakau. Individuals, businesses, schools and community organisations have the opportunity to sponsor a cross for $25 to honour the Horowhenua soldiers who died in the First World War. In the eastern sky is also Sirius and Betelgeuse, two very large suns that twinkle different colours through the binoculars. In the western sky is the orange glow of Mars, also visible to the naked eye. In the northern sky is the Seven Sisters.

Satellites are frequently seen objects in the night sky sometimes mistaken for aircraft.

On Monday the International Space Station (ISS) passed over Levin at approximately 4.21am, seen for three minutes, and again over Levin skies the following morning, a little later at 5.07am tracking to the south east.

Metlink will run to a holiday timetable over Christmas and New Year.

This means that some bus, train or harbour ferry services will be running to a special or weekend timetable.

Charges have increased for the Horowhenua afterhours medical clinic held at Horowhenua Health Centre.

The increases came into effect on Monday following a review after 12 months of operation. The afterhours service operates through a collaboration of five General Practices in Horowhenua and is available seven days a week at the Health Centre.

“The service is proving popular with Horowhenua people but has been on a knife edge financially,” said Sandra Lester, general manager for the PHO Practices.

“These (fee) changes help to ensure the Afterhour’s Clinic for Horowhenua is sustainable over the longer term. Without this increase we would either need to reduce the hours of operation or reduce staffing, neither of which the Practice representatives wished to do.”

Dr David Le Page, medical director for Horowhenua Community Practice, wants to stress afterhours care is not meant to be a convenience service.

“Some people are using the afterhours clinic for health issues that are best seen by their regular General Practice team,” said Dr Le Page.

“Afterhours is the backup service that should help people avoid heading to the hospital Emergency Department if they are seen in time locally.”

He appreciates it is a fine line. “We do not want people ending up at the hospital because they did not access either care from their General Practice team or Afterhours Clinic,” he said. “Afterhours is a service to meet a person’s need urgently, something that can’t wait until the next day.”

Fabulous Foxton Pilgrimage/Hikoi stops in Foxton MAN WITH A VISION Justin Duckworth, 46, became Anglican Bishop of Wellington in 2012.

In his early 20s, he and wife Jenny began running a home for teenage women in Berhampore, and did so for seven years before moving with their young children into Upper Cuba St, Wellington, to live among the street people including prostitutes, transvestites and homeless people.

In the late 1990s, with other young Christian activists, Justin and Jenny formed Urban Vision. More than 60 Urban Visionaries are involved with houses in Wellington for folk who struggle with life and live on the margin. Justin and Jenny also pioneered Ngatiawa, a contemporary monastery in the Reikorangi Valley, near Waikanae, where more than 1100 visitors stay each year.

By FRANKIE WEBB Foxton’s historic All Saints church had a very important, and possibly history-making, visit from the Anglican Bishop of Wellington, the Right Reverend Justin Duckworth.

Bishop Duckworth, known for his trademark dreadlock hairstyle, was part of a Pilgrimage/Hikoi celebrating the bicentennial year since the first preaching of the gospel (te rongopai) in Aotearoa New Zealand.

Christian beginnings in New Zealand are associated with the engagement of Ruatara, Hongi Hika and other Ma¯ori leaders and local iwi, with the Reverend Samuel Marsden, missionaries and their families from the Anglican Church Missionary Society.

The bicentenary marks significant foundational developments for New Zealand, including the developing relationships between Ma¯ori and Pa¯keha¯, starting points for the missionary outreach of church, the first European settlements, birth of the first European children in New Zealand and the first formal school and early attempts at Ma¯ori literacy.

The group of more than 60 people then visited the original site of the Turongo Church in Himatangi Block Road as it was the earliest church in this area. The church fell into disrepair but was resurrected and rededicated in the 1930s.

In 1965 it was moved from Moutoa to its current site at Poutu Marae, Shannon.

Bishop Duckworth was not the first Bishop of Wellington to visit the Church built in 1869 — The Bishop of Wellington, the Rt Rev. H.W. Baines officiated there in 1969.

All Saints' Church, Foxton was the Hikoi’s final destination.

Reverend Val Barber welcomed the visitors and conducted an opening prayer. A celebratory shared lunch was held with Bishop Duckworth who remained in Foxton for the rest of the day.

Police seek 4WD driver after Trestle crash Foxton Police are appealing to anyone who saw a silver 4WD involved in an accident on the Whirokino Trestle on Wednesday December 3 around 5pm.

A bronze coloured Mitsubishi Station Wagon was travelling northward on the Whirokino Trestle with a silver 4WD vehicle travelling behind for sometime.

The 4WD vehicle began an overtaking manoeuvre on the Trestle, but it had

to pull back in behind the Mitsubishi due to an on coming vehicle. As it pulled back, it clipped the right rear of the Mitsubishi, which was forced against a concrete fencing slab, causing such serious damage the vehicle has been written off.

Police said the driver of the silver vehicle would have been aware of the crash because of the dust and noise of the impact.

vehicle failed to stop and assist, instead overtaking the Mitsubishi and carrying on northwards at speed.

Police want to speak to anyone who witnessed this event or saw a silver 4WD travelling between Levin and Foxton between 4.30pm to 5.30pm on Wednesday December 3.

Fabulous Foxton Naughty pages empty

By FRANKIE WEBB Sinterklaas had only time for a fleeting visit but he managed to catch up with many of the good children in Foxton and Foxton Beach. He had his ‘naughty and nice’ book with him, but the naughty pages were empty.

“There are no naughty children here,” Sinterklaas said. “There are many lovely presents on their way to the very good children who live here.”

Sinterklaas was decked out in authentic Dutch costuming. This Saturday Santa Claus is in the De Molen Windmill grotto from 10am until 4pm. A gold coin towards repairing the Windmill blades would be appreciated.

Great service

I have experienced really good service from Te Waiora, Foxton, over the time it has been open and before, from the same staff that have shifted into their new roles at our lovely new health centre.

I had to call in without an appointment to get a medical issue dealt with. It was later in the afternoon when I walked in and talked with the receptionist. I was offered exceptional service with a nurse testing for infection, a script done and signed by the duty doctor and I had treatment for it after filling it with the pharmacy before business closed for the evening.

I have found the service I received to be of a high standard and all the staff have been welcoming and very friendly. Yes we know there is long wait for non-urgent matters if you want to be seen by a particular doctor, but if you have an urgent matter you will be seen. I love the better parking and the nicer waiting rooms and comfortable chairs.

I know the staff are doing their very best to give the best service they can while coping with the very high demand in this district. A new building on its own does not make it the best and it is the staff who work tirelessly with a lack of permanent full-time doctors having to juggle rosters and serve an area of high need that I would like to give personal thanks to.

For those out there who are frustrated with the way it is, please spare a thought for those that continually do their best to make up for shortfalls in funding and

doctors.

Flax museum

Foxton is said to have the only Flax Stripping Museum in the southern hemisphere and thanks is due to Messrs Tony Hunt, Huck Baird and Ron Evans who have just given their time and energy in carrying out vital maintenance on the working machinery in the museum.

It is interesting to note that these gentlemen include members of the Wildlife Foxton Trust and the Save Our River Trust. People who care about Foxton.

Between 1869 and 1973 there were many flax mills in Foxton. At one time 50 mills were operating within 10 miles of the town.

Sadly manmade material squeezed out the natural product so all we have left is a museum manned by volunteers hoping to attract tourism. Fortunately we have just had some enthusiastic young men seeking to learn about flax stripping.

Foxton is a superb flax growing area and today there is a growing international industry in Flax Seed Oil, which is a dietary supplement high in Omega 3 and beneficial to our health as well as being a great cooking oil.

Maybe an opportunity exists here for an entrepreneur to develop this business.

Foxton surely need more businesses and there would be plenty of support forthcoming.

Fabulous Foxton Barrel organ has colourful history

By FRANKIE WEBB Foxton’s Jim Harper is a man of many talents.

He purchased an 1880 French barrel organ in a very poor state of repair and has breathed new life into the beautiful work of art.

French organ maker Alexandre Gasparini built the organ, which was converted to ‘book operation’ in the early 1890s.

At the turn of the century, or shortly after, the organ found its way to Amsterdam and it worked hard to earn its keep playing most days in the city’s streets.

It was at that time owned and operated by the draaiorgel company, G. Perlee and Co. The company still has the masters for many books made for the organ in the 1930s.

The organ fell silent when street organs were banned in 1942 by the German occupying forces. Sadly many street organs did not survive World War II. Many, along with their cardboard music books, became victims of the time, being burnt as fuel due to severe shortages.

This lucky organ returned to the streets of Amsterdam after the war to delight audiences for many years before being sold to a Mr Vader who operated a children’s carousel. The organ was set up to accompany it.

In the 1960s the organ was again sold and sent to the United States where it had several different owners. Within a decade its condition had deteriorated to the point of no longer being able to be played. Spied

by Jim Harper, the tired old lady arrived in New Zealand in August 2001 and then began a labour of love.

The organ is now as good as the day she was made and totally authentic in every way. Jim wheels her out for special events to the delight of anyone lucky enough to be in earshot.

Fabulous Foxton Community kindness means flag can fly

ADELE Parson and Ingo Schleuss with a NZ Maori Battalion flag, which will fly once again thanks to the generosity of Horowhenua Chronicle readers. Mrs Parson’s great-uncle was Brigadier George Dittmer CBE, DSO, MBE, MC, MiD, commanding officer of the 28th (Maori) Battalion from November 1939 to February 1942 and the reason she started the memorial collection.

Founder of the 28th Maori Battalion memorial collection at Foxton, Adele Parson, engaged Ingo Schleuss to produce a generic flag to be flown for the first time on Anzac Day 2009.

The collection was originally housed in the Tram Station Cafe in Main Street.

The special flag, sanctioned by the New Zealand Defence Force, flew for important occasions on the village green flagpole.

Earlier this year the cafe closed and the collection moved to the Castletown Motel on State Highway 1.

Mrs Parson was disappointed to leave the flagpole behind.

“I kept the flag carefully folded with the intention of one day buying a pole so it could fly

November Foxton section and within a few hours of the paper hitting the streets, Mrs Parson had received two offers.

“I couldn’t believe it when local builder Art Cherry dropped off a flag pole the day the paper came out,” Mrs Parson said.

“Then Brent Reid from Shannon contacted me offering another flag pole.”

Local concrete contractor Merv Bishop from Foxton Mini Mix came along to pour concrete he donated.

“I’m extremely grateful to all concerned,” Mrs Parson said.

“I had been looking at two poles on the net, one was in Tauranga, the other Rotorua. It was going to be such a mission to get them back to Foxton, I think I would have given up.”

A blessing has been held and the distinctive red flag is flying again.

LOOKING BACK Local historian and retired teacher Tony Hunt shares his knowledge on the history of Foxton and it’s buildings. This month he looks at what is now just a facade, but Whyte’s Hotel was an important part of Foxton in its heyday.

The local Historical Society received a bible from a descendant of the Whyte family, original owners of the building now occupied by New World.

The bible is dated 1876 and records births, deaths and marriages in the family.

Andrew James and Mary Anne Whyte moved to Foxton in the late 1860s where they became ‘Mine Hosts’ at the White Hart Hotel, renamed Manawatu, around 1870. There are some records that say Whyte was at a Family Hotel in Avenue Road but I have not found any mention of this elsewhere. By then Cook had renamed his Adelaide Hotel in Main Street to the Family so that

is probably the source of confusion.

The Whytes obviously felt Foxton could do with its third hotel when in 1876 they opened the one known as Whytes Hotel (now New World) in Main Street. James died in 1882 and Jane carried on the business. Later J R Stansell took over the hotel and eventually bought it from Mary, who passed away in 1908.

The hotel became well known as the local depot for Cobb and Co Coaches that connected the town with the railway at Shannon.

The area that is now the New World car park was used for the stables.

In 1906 Stansell sold out to Easton and Austin, landowners from Moutoa. The sale dragged on through the courts after

BURNT to the ground and rebuilt, Whyte’s Hotel facade as it was recreated after a fire in 1918 and remains today as the facade of Foxton New World.

Stansell's claim that all the land that made up the section was not included in the sale. This claim

was eventually dismissed.

Fires then came on the scene.

The first, in 1912, destroyed all

the shops north of the hotel. The second, in 1918, destroyed the hotel. The result was that the adjoining Moutoa Building and Easton's Hotel were rebuilt in brick to conform with the by-law that had been introduced after 1912. If you look at the brick facade of New World you will see the building was named Easton's Hotel, but locals kept with the original “Whytes Hotel” to the end.

The rooms above the shops in the Moutoa Building were the accommodation area for the hotel.

The town is most fortunate the facade was kept when the New World building was constructed, as Whyte’s Hotel was an integral part of the town and not just for the imbibing of alcoholic beverages.

The bible and its family information will ensure the Whyte family will find a permanent place in Foxton's archives.

Long shines in eventing

By FRANKIE WEBB Manakau equestrian Abigail Long, 18, and BMW Advokaat (Hugo) claimed the New Zealand National Three Day Event Junior Championship at the country’s premier horse trial in Puhunui, Auckland.

The international event, offering nine categories, attracted entries from former World Champion Blyth Tait, Olympians Matthew Grayling and Heelan Tompkins.

Long has enjoyed a successful season leading up to Puhunui, the biggest win of her career.

Riding 15-year-old BMW Advokaat (Hugo), Long claimed the CNC1* (Star) at Puhunui last year.

“It was good to be able to make that step up this year,” Long said. “We had two starts at 2** level, finishing eighth at Taupo and winning in Wellington, I knew he would be good for the 1* (Star) at Puhunui.”

Getting through the dressage phase first was upper most on Long’s mind. The pressure was on to pull out all the stops under the judges’ scrutiny at an international event.

“Hugo felt full of beans but composed himself when it counted,” Long said. “With a few points to spare, it’s always a good feeling going into the cross country phase.”

The long crosscountry course wasn’t a concern. “Hugo is really fit and after competing 2**, the fences looked easier,” Long said. “Andrew (jump coach Andrew Scott) walked the course with me and that helped heaps.”

Finishing without a fault, Long was in a comfortable position on 57.5 penalties going into the showjumping phase ahead of second placegetter Jackson Bovill and Visionnaire on 61.2. A disastrous showjumping round saw Bovill clock up 16 jump faults taking the combination well out of contention.

It was Canterbury rider Lucy Turner and Tallyho Mystic sitting second to last after the dressage on 67.8 who issued the challenge after finishing the crosscountry without adding further penalties, and then

The win extends her top ranking by 51 points in the New Zealand Young Rider Eventing series. Reward for Shannon rugby stalwart

By TANYA WOOD Shannon’s Dean File has just had the biggest week of his rugby career.

The chairman of the Shannon Rugby Football Club was named the Charles Monro NZ Rugby Volunteer of the Year at last week’s Steinlager Awards in Auckland.

When the Horowhenua Chronicle spoke to him the day after, he was still pinching himself. In fact he seemed just as excited about meeting some of the All Black greats, past and present.

“The whole evening was overwhelming, amazing, I was quite blown away by the whole thing,” File said.

He was told four weeks before the awards ceremony that he had made the final three. (There are a total of 26 rugby unions, which can each submit up to three nominations.) The week before the awards, cameramen were in Shannon capturing File on video, as he said, “just mucking about down at the club, like you do”, shown on two massive floor to

Hearing his name called out as the winner was an incredible moment. “All of a sudden I’m on stage in front of about 700 people

looking at me and I’m thinking ‘holey, moly you actually have won this thing’.” Afterwards he was taken off to one side for his interview with Andrew Mulligan. “[Live] TV coverage must have been about an hour delayed I guess, just going by the time my phone started going crazy with texts.”

File had yet to watch the taping of the ceremony but he said Kieran Read came up to him afterwards and said he’d done extremely well.

“That’s probably the most mindblowing thing for us coming out of little old Shannon.

I think I actually made that comment that there were probably more people in the room than in Shannon, to then to be walking through the room later on and have Kieran Read go out of his way to come over and congratulate me. I think I was almost standing with my mouth open in awe. He said without the volunteers, we wouldn’t be here, that was pretty special, I’ll never forget that.”

File also got to ‘bump into’ the

likes of Colin Meads, Brian Lochore, Bryan Williams and Ian Kirkpatrick, as well as get a few treasured ‘selphies’ with Kieran Read, Steve Hansen, John Key and Richie McCaw. Now back home, File’s next job is to find a place for the trophy. “It’s a beautiful trophy, not sure what it’s made of but it weighs a tonne. It’s very special.

Everyone who has spoken to me says I deserve it [but] you just do the things that need to be done.

Someone did them when I was playing so it just seems the natural thing to carry on and do.

I felt I was accepting this award on behalf of every volunteer in rugby.”

To cap off the week, File was also elected as president of the Horowhenua Kapiti Rugby Football Union at last week’s annual meeting. The position is valid for two years and File takes over from Rex Kerr.

File’s contribution to Shannon RFC has been nothing short of outstanding, according to Horowhenua Kapiti Rugby Union chief executive Corey Kennett. “It’s fantastic to see

Dean recognised and rewarded for all his years of dedicated volunteer service to Shannon RFC. We are delighted to have Dean in our rugby community and like so many of our other volunteers, doing it for the love of the game.”

File, current club manager, is also the club bar manager, premier team manager and main driver of fundraising for Shannon RFC as well as chairman of a working party introduced to sustain the Shannon Domain facilities with other organisations. Earlier this year, when former Shannon RFC junior player Nat Manville was tragically injured playing a 1st XV game for Awatapu College, File led a fundraising charge that raised over $10,000 towards the Nat Manville appeal. He has been involved with the Shannon rugby club since 1999, as player and president.

File is the third winner of the Volunteer of the Year from Horowhenua Kapiti, after Ken Swain won the award in 2008 and Hilton Williams, also from Shannon, won the award in 2011.

Renee (Year 13) came 6th in the discus, 11th in the 400m and 20th in the long jump, Frances (Year 12) came 13th in the triple jump (with a personal best performance) and 17th in the long jump, and Roger (Year 12) competed in the 100m and 200m, but had to withdraw injured from the long jump. All three athletes, who have been juggling

study for exams with training, said they were generally happy with their results.

Fellow college athlete Anak Andrew, who had performed so well at Manawatu Secondary School Champs earlier in the year, was unable to compete due to a football injury.

The four athletes are members of Levin Athletics Club, where Renee and Frances are also involved with coaching younger athletes.

Their training continues with the North Island Senior Champs held last weekend and various Secondary School and National Senior track and field meets early next year.

Strokes not the end of sports success

The Levin Stroke Support group fielded a team of players at the Interclub Boccia Challenge and took top honours.

“We thrashed the other teams,” chairman of the Levin Stroke Support group, Ivan Morgan, said. “Some areas had more than one team so they had the advantage.”

While the Levin group is competitive, they also put an emphasis on fun.

“The ball doesn’t have a bias,” Ivan said. “It goes with the contour of the floor, which can

The Regional Transport Committee has prioritised key activities for funding according to the region’s main transport priorities.

King of the Mountain has a queen

By PETER FRANKLIN Palmerston North’s Rebecca Barr enjoyed a fantastic night, powering her No 34p car to what many believe was a historymaking championship win.

The win has speedway statisticians searching through the record books, but she is certainly on top of the world after winning the King of the Mountain classic at Stratford Speedway on Saturday.

Barr, along with a large contingent of Palmerston Northbased superstock drivers, arrived at Stratford on Friday for the McCurdy Engineering/ Moller Johnson Ltd New Zealand Superstock Grand Prix qualifier.

After three heats Barr battled her way with the pack but failed to make it through to the GP lineup.

However, the gutsy Barr brushed aside the disappointment and turned her focus on to the King of the Mountain Superstock Champs for the non-GP qualifiers.

Barr stuck to a proven game plan — keep out of trouble and keep circulating, picking up places every lap. While the game plan worked, it did not stop her dishing out a few good hits along the way. At the end of the night the points tally was close but Barr proved too good for the rest.

Stratford Speedway president John Booker said Barr could quite likely be the first female competitor to stand at the top of the superstock podium in a championship of any sort.

“I’m pleased it happened here,” he said.

Barr finished with 48 points followed by 67p Richard Hart, second on 44 points, with third place filled by 62s Regan Gernhoefer on 39 points.

While the King of the Mountain proved to be actionpacked, Wellington’s Dale Robertson took the narrowest of wins to become the 2014-15 McCurdy Engineering/Moller Johnson Ltd New Zealand Superstock Grand Prix champion.

After Friday’s qualifier, the

PALMERSTON North stock driver Rebecca Barr proved she is a force to be reckoned with in the unforgiving ranks of superstock racing, wining the King of the Mountain title.

Grand Prix was going to be explosive with over 20 of the fastest superstocks in the country lining up for GP honours. Robertson only qualified sixth in his group on Friday night but saved the best for Saturday. Track conditions suited the 89w car, getting

fantastic drive out of the corners.

Carving up the field in the first of the 15 lap heat races, from grid 25 to fourth place, Robertson could not repeat or better that in the second heat only managing a seventh place, from grid 12.

In the final heat, Robertson drew the right grid position,

starting on second, on the inside line.

He had to contend with the likes of 54p Scott Joblin who had a points lead going into the final and 3nz Graeme Barr who was snapping at the heels.

Joblin and Barr were both on form and while the predicted

heat three carnage never eventuated, there was no shortage of high speed wheel to wheel action.

Robertson went on to win the championship by one point (68 points) from Scott Joblin (67 points), with Graeme Barr in third place (65 points).
