CANINE clubs united to fight a common enemy, fireworks, with protests calling for a ban on the public sale of fireworks in Horowhenua.

Horowhenua District Mayor Brendan Duffy is being urged to make a stand and let the district take a leading role in the banning of the public sale of fireworks.

Horowhenua Kennel Association president Peter Sharp says Horowhenua District Council has the chance to be a leader and use its power to draw up and implement bylaws outlawing the public sale of fireworks.

He says this has been an ongoing concern for animal owners, and just one day into this year’s legal four-day sale period, a horse has had to be euthanised after being

Horowhenua Dog Obedience Club president Chrissie Bingham says she fully supports the ban on the public sale of fireworks.

A witness said the car veered to the left, then right and left again before striking a power pole. No other vehicles were involved.

Road diversions were put in place while the serious crash and other emergency personnel were in attendance.

A double view for MoreFM’s breakfast host Dave Key when 9-year-old twins Kiana, left, and Stevie Sayer-White arrived at the radio station as the McDonald’s guest DJs on Friday.

When asked what they wanted the guest appearance to be called, both girls looked at each other and said “the three chicks”, leaving Dave in bit of a quandary as to his part in the trio.

Both girls are in Room 11 at Fairfield School, and like horses, dancing, kapa haka, anything sporty, rugby, hockey, art and playing the ukulele.

What’s in a smile?

I agree with ‘Off Key?’ on October 15 — John Key does have a nice smile. It’s delightful for us voters to be able to turn our television on at the end of the day and see our Prime Minister smiling back at us with his charismatic smile.

It’s all worth it after a day of looking at unhappy people everywhere, at least someone is smiling and looking very cheerful. He was the better looking choice after all.

When we’ve spent a day out in society seeing over-worked, underpaid and unhappy voters, it is a nice change to see a smiling face.

Beautiful garden

We are very proud, that in 18 months, we have managed to create a beautiful garden in a property that only had one plant in it when we purchased it.

It gives us a lot of pleasure and it is admired by many passers-by, so it is hard to comprehend the mentality of people, mainly female, children, teens and so-called adults, who feel the need to rip the heads off our flowers and just throw them on the footpath.

They often have a parent slouching along the street with them who just watch what they are doing as if it is normal behaviour.

We can only conclude that they don’t have much beauty in their lives.

River Loop

It is most encouraging to see that the Foxton River Loop found its way on to the agenda of the Horizon’s Strategy and Policy Committee meeting last month.

I hope there was time to discuss the matter fully. Possibly the nub of the issue is found in item 6.4 which is hereby quoted — “A number of options were identified that could achieve the vision of re-establishing a flow to the Loop including: I. Clear the existing channel (i.e. widen and clean out the channel); II. Create a cut (a new river channel to the main stem of the Manawatu River); III. Re-establish a gate / weir in the loop (in combination with option (I); IV. Create a navigable channel for small boats (in combination with option (II); V. A full engineering solution as highlighted in the Horizons Regional Council report (seen as the gold-standard solution); VI. Tie in any works with the upcoming works on the Whirikino Trestle Bridge.”

Keeping it clean

It is comforting to read all the letters concerning the Foxton River Loop.

At last there is an awakening to the environmental advantages we should have in this area.

I look forward to all those people lending their principled muscle to engaging in the resource management process to help get the Manawatu River pollution-free. Currently, the RMA will not permit water of a lower quality to enter water of a higher quality.

The River Loop is graded as higher quality than the main river and that is in spite of the red alert signs that may be hosted on the banks of the Loop.

There will be rigorous tests to pass as regards funding to open the River Loop and unless this community demonstrates that collectively it wants clean water first of all then any applications for major funding will automatically be disregarded.

College names new principal

APPOINTED: Mark Robinson.

Waiopehu College Board of Trustees has announced the appointment of Mark Robinson, who will take up the position of principal in 2015 replacing Barry Petherick.

Mark hails from the United Kingdom where he was born and grew up. He started teaching in 1990, moving into senior management and holding a number of leadership roles between 1990 and 2008, before deciding to emigrate with his family to New Zealand.

After a spell at Rathkeale College in Masterton, as music head of department, he became deputy principal at Naenae College in Lower Hutt, a

position he has held for five years. Mark is a keen musician and plays piano, organ, saxophone, drums and sings bass.

Married to Jo, the couple has two children, Matthew, 17, off to Victoria University next year to study computer science, and Charlotte, 11, who is already excited about the prospect of moving to Levin and attending Waiopehu College from 2016.

Mark brings a wealth of experience to the role and said he was thrilled to be appointed principal at Waiopehu College.

“Jo, Matt, Charli and I are excited to be joining this

fantastic community and we have been struck by the real sense of family and the strong relationships which sit at the heart of the college.”

Mark is committed to working with the Waiopehu whanau, staff and students in ensuring all learners reach their full potential and achieve the very best possible outcomes.

Barry Petherick, who has been associated with the college as far back as 1980 and its principal since 2007, will remain in Horowhenua and be investigating as to how he can continue to contribute in the education field.

Students’ cool treat aids good cause

That was the verdict of Poroutawhao School students on Friday as they tucked into tubs of vanilla icecream, helping to raise money for Ronald McDonald House in Wellington.

Despite the cold, wet day, enjoying his tub of icecream was 10-year-old Bailey Sherwood, who assured his fellow fundraisers that “as long as you don’t eat icecream fast you won’t get brainfreeze”.

Tip Top icecream, with $1.70 from each sale donated by the company to Ronald McDonald House. The school sold 150 tubs.

Poroutawhao School teacher Kirstin McKenzie saw the fundraiser idea on Facebook and decided it was a great idea for the kids. She said the school regularly undertakes community-based fundraisers, which has included the Cancer Society and New Zealand Surf Life Saving.

“This particular fundraiser also happened to be a nice treat for the children,” she said.

International expert in late effects of childhood cancer, Professor Hamish Wallace, will speak in Wellington on Friday.

A consultant in Paediatric Oncology at the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh and Honorary Professor at the University of Edinburgh, he will appear courtesy of the Child Cancer Foundation.

New Massey centre

Massey University has been selected to host the Government’s new Food Safety Science and Research Centre, which will receive $5 million in funding to deliver food safety research for the country. The centre was a key recommendation from the Government inquiry into Fonterra’s contamination scare last year and will be managed by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment and the Ministry for Primary Industries. It is expected to open in the middle of next year.

The centre will be co-funded by Government and industry partners, working with the food industry, to help ensure the delivery of excellent food safety science and research while reducing the risks of foodborne illness.

A four-hour search for an obsolete distress beacon transmitting in error has prompted the Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand to remind beacon users to dispose of old beacons properly. The old 121.5MHz beacon was located floating in a puddle of water below decks on a dilapidated yacht in Waikawa Bay near Picton. Beacons operating on this frequency stopped being monitored in February 2009. They have been replaced by beacons operating on the 406MHz frequency.

EMERGENCY SERVICES that they had located a body, believed to be the missing male tramper, in the vicinity of Mount Hector, Tararua Forest Park.

Mr Gilberd said, because of the extremely difficult terrain and prevailing weather conditions, they had requested assistance from the New Zealand Airforce with the recovery operation.

Rescue Helicopter

The crew of the Palmerston Northbased Rescue Helicopter were kept busy over the past week.

On Thursday a 7-year-old Taihape girl was transferred to Wanganui Base Hospital.

The crew returned to base, refuelled, and then transported search and rescue volunteers into the Tararua Ranges in the area where a missing tramper had last been last reported. Reports of a major head-on crash near Kimbolton saw the crew recalled from the Tararuas.

Three people were injured in the crash, two taken by road to Palmerston North Hospital.

The third, a woman in her 60s was trapped in one of the cars and had to be extracted by the Kimbolton Volunteer Fire Brigade and stabilised before being flown to Palmerston North Hospital, where her condition remains serious.

Senior Sergeant Sarn Paroli of Levin police said by the time police arrived at the scene of the fight, the opposing groups had disappeared.

Police were searching through CCTV camera footage to collect enough evidence to identify those involved.

Mr Paroli said people were understandably reluctant to come forward with information for fear of retribution, however this was the type of incident that the town did not want. He is urging anyone who has information that will assist to contact police on 0800CRIMESTOPPERS.

Re job situation

Veronica Harrod’s attack on local business is yet another rant from the anti-business, anti-employer lobby that simmers under the skin of New Zealand society. Her attack is clearly aimed at the comments of a local business owner expressing his frustration at not being able to grow his business through a lack of suitable staff. She and others conveniently forget that 97 per cent of business in New Zealand is small to medium in size. Only 3 per cent are large and yet these corporates get attacked by this lobby as being greedy and John Key’s rich mates. So this lobby seem to dislike all business but want lots of high paid cushy jobs.

Horowhenua is not alone in struggling to employ. I am a manager of a Kapiti company that has tried for two years to employ an apprentice landscaper who would start on $38k/year and after four years training earn $60k/year with a company vehicle. We have been unable to employ because applicants have been unable to read and write, do basic maths, have no drivers licence or can’t pass a pre employment drug test. We have also advertised for months to employ a qualified person offering $65k/year plus a company vehicle but haven’t had a single

reply. So here is a business that pays well, trains well and has good safety policy, offers interesting work, but can’t find staff.

Veronica Harrod could go to local schools and mentor our young people on the the need to be educated, skilled and drug free if they want well paid meaningful employment.

But then it’s easier to attack business people.

There has been a considerable amount of negative comment bandied about in respect of the operation of Te Waiora, our new Community Health Center in Foxton.

I would like to say that, without exception, I have found all personnel I have dealt with, from the reception staff and nurses to the doctors, unfailingly kind, very helpful and doing their best at all times.

Please put away your brickbats and give the staff the encouragement they need in the very difficult circumstances they have to deal with. It’s not their fault.

Inner thoughts funny and thought-provoking THEATRE REVIEW Vagina Monologues Performed at the Levin Performing Arts Society Reviewed by Pam Smith The much-anticipated Vagina Monologues at Levin Performing Arts Society had been advertised as a thought provoking drama; director Jacqui Coogan promising an amazing play about women, filled with humour, empathy and honesty. It was.

A highly talented cast of nine women performed this groundbreaking play: Tacita Bohan, Mikayla Madden, Rebecca Fraser, Jennie Ferguson, Janine Moody, Lynne Long, Sonia Papworth, Tracey Bentall and Caroline Wallace. All were outstanding, the delivery of lines relaxed and confident from every performer. It was just like sitting in on an informal

ladies chit-chat.

The monologues were delivered with aplomb and panache, and were gutsy and garrulous or gut-wrenching as required.

Their personal vagina revelations were intimate and astounding.

Tracey Bentall, resplendent in leather, absolutely exploded on the audience and had everyone shrieking with laughter, men included. She gyrated, groaned and galumphed, it really had to be seen to be believed. For me it was one of the highlights of the show, her acrobatic antics were one of the most amazing local theatrical performances I have ever seen.

The Vagina Monologues was an amazing experience and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute. The ready laughter of the audience attested to the enjoyment of everyone else in the theatre.

Wholehearted congratulations to Jacqui for such a polished production and also to the Levin Performing Arts for having the courage to stage such a thought-provoking play.

Levin pupils kept active

By TANYA WOOD Levin School students are never bored at playtime.

Much thought has gone into ensuring that the playground equipment and organised team games at lunchtime build confidence and important socialising skills.

Assistant principal Kathryn Brown said playing with peers is an important part of growing up.

“Socialisation and children helping each other is big at the school. As a result we have very little bullying or other issues to deal with,” she said. Children are encouraged to play together as a team. Hearing kids cheer others on, and seeing older ones with their arms around younger students helping them to hold the bat and swing is just great to see, Mrs Brown said.

“No child is ever seen wandering around with nothing to do.”

The contents of the PE shed includes unicycles, pogo sticks, hoola hoops, hockey sticks, cricket sets, skipping ropes, elastics, skittle, and balls for most sports. The mini adventure playground, with its tunnels,

THE covered sandpit area is one of the most popular lunch time activities at Levin School. Built about three years ago, with an outer mural designed and painted by senior students, and inner mural by community members, funding by the parent’s association keeps the sandpit well-stocked with sandpit equipment. flying fox, slide, swings, monkey bars, fort and climbing wall, helps develop upper body strength, balance and coordination.

Th most popular lunchtime activities are the sandpit and organised team games.

Teacher aid and sports coordinator Allie Davis organises team games every lunch time.

She can have as many as 30 students lining up to play, from touch rugby to soccer, netball, cricket and rounders, played either on an asphalt area or the

school’s immaculate field. On wet days, it’s table tennis or indoor hockey in the school hall.

Allie chooses two captains who decide the game. “Quite often they’ve already organised themselves at morning break,” she said.

“It’s great to watch their progress, the kids all help each other, that’s the beauty of it.”

Mrs Brown said the children often come back into class sweating, wanting all the windows open.

“That’s want we want, kids active and busy.”

Following on from last week’s editorial about seeing Europe and the UK with Trafalgar the touring specialists, we wanted to pick out another two of their fabulous itineraries to talk about this week. This may sound like an easy task but in reality it’s very hard to choose just two, because there is so much choice to cater for every travellers dream holiday.

Nevertheless, we have chosen to highlight two stunning but very different itineraries – one quintessentially European and one with an exotic, east-meets-west flavour.

Some people have the perception that Switzerland is an expensive place to visit but in reality, it is on a par with most other capital cities around Europe and the benfits of a country with so much to see in a relatively small space are obvious. There is wall to wall scenery of the natural and manmade variety and with Switzerland bordered by France, Germany and Italy, you get the benefit of regional differences in terms of language, food, scenery and culture.

Trafalgar’s Secrets of Switzerland Tour is aptly named as it takes you to the main centres via the back roads, to explore the scenic side of Switzerland.

After arriving in Zurich you are transferred to beautiful Lucerne, the lakeside town where you meet your travelling companions and Travel Director at a Welcome Reception. You visit the famous Lion Monument built in memory of Louis XVI's Swiss Guard and later enjoy a journey by cable car to the top of Mount Pilatus where you will have great views over the nearby spectacular Alps.

Travel through beautiful countryside to arrive in the Emmental region. After an enjoyable train journey, you arrive in Wengen, a picturesque mountain village famous for its annual ski race on the Lauberhorn mountain. Explore the car-free town or consider venturing to the top of the Jungfrau with its Ice Palace, Restaurant and viewing platform which takes in breathtaking views of snow capped mountains.

In the evening enjoy a “Be My Guest” dinner in the beautiful Swiss countryside.

Travel along the shore of Lake Thun before passing through the Lötschberg tunnel which was constructed in 1913.

Arrive in Zermatt in the shadow of the majestic Matterhorn and enjoy free time to explore this beautiful Swiss town.

You will visit the picturesque Chillon Castle immortalised by Lord Byron’s ‘Prisoner of Chillon’ and pictured on our advert below. This castle is so authentically presented that you feel you have stepped back to the 16th century. Stop in the lakeside town of Montreux where you have free time to walk along the promenade with its colourful flower beds or sit and watch the world go by at a pavement café. Later in the day you enjoy a “Cultural Insight” by visiting a winery for a tour and tasting.

Home of the United Nations, Geneva is situated between the Jura Mountains to the north and the Alpine Peaks to the West. Sometimes you’ll walk out of a café or shop and they will be visible in the distance. It really does take your breath away.

As for the town itself, it is packed with picturesque cafes, squares and meandering streets in the old town, otherwise known as the Vielle Ville. Highlights include the Flower Clock, a working horticultural timepiece that sits on a knoll, and of course Lake Geneva, with its famous Jet d’Eau, which shoots water more than 450 feet into the sky.

For history lovers, there is a visit to the medieval town of Murten with its fortified walls dating back over 800 years. The tour concludes back in Switzerland’s financial capital, Zurich where you will enjoy views of the Grossmünster and the Fraumünster – famous for the stained glassed windows by artist Marc Chagall.

There is no doubt this tour and this country will leave you with life-long memories and prove to you that Switzerland is the home of “chocolate box” views!

This is such an awe-inspiring country. Its distinct culture is a result of a blend of Arab, indigenous Berber, Sub-Saharan African, and European influences and makes for one heck of an experience.

Follow the old caravan trail south. Stop for lunch in Midelt, a market town set in the high plains between the Middle and High Atlas mountain ranges. Continue along the palm-fringed Ziz Valley, famous for date cultivation, to the Tafilalt oasis on the edge of the Sahara Desert. End your day in Erfoud, where beautiful views across the shimmering Sahara have made this a popular location with filmmakers.

Travel west to Tinghir, one of the most beautiful oases in southern Morocco. Continue through part of the Todra Gorge and cut through the mountains for one of the most dramatic views in the country! Follow the route of a thousand Kasbahs to Ouarzazate, the setting for a number of famous movies including Lawrence of Arabia, Cleopatra and Gladiator.

During your orientation tour of Ouarzazate, you visit Aït Ben Haddou in the High Atlas Mountains. Continue through the Tizi-n-Tichka Pass to Marrakesh - the ‘Red City’. Like many other former imperial cities in Morocco, Marrakesh is comprised of an old fortified city - the medina - and an adjacent modern city. Marrakesh is home to Morocco’s largest traditional market (‘souk’) where you might like to do some shopping.

Visit the Bahia Palace during city orientation. See Djemaa el Fna Square in the old quarter, with its palm readers, acrobats, camels and snakecharmers. There is always free time to explore. FIREWORKS AND YOUR ANIMALS

Many people love the sights and sounds of fireworks, but for our pets and other animals they can be frightening, sometimes to the extreme. Most vet clinics and SPCA's around the country encounter a number of lost, injured and even abused animals following fireworks. With some preparation and awareness, however, it is possible to get through the fireworks season with minimal fear and stress.

Always make sure your pets are safe and secure.

They should be microchipped, or at least have a collar with contact details in the event that they run off from fright. Make sure runs, cages and bird aviaries are secured and covered.

Cats and dogs are best to be kept inside. Make sure the windows are covered, doors shut and secured, and have the t.v. or radio on to help cover the sounds of fireworks. Your pet may have their own safe spot – it may be their crate, or perhaps a certain bedroom, whilst others may prefer an area created for them that is dark and quiet. Let them use this, and make sure it remains a positive place for them to retreat.

If your pet hides in a cupboard or under a bed, don't try to get them out – this may distress them further. Scared animals can be unpredictable. Stay safe. Just reassure them you're there and let them come out on their own.

Some pets seem naughty when they are in fact scared or distressed. Do not get cross with your pet. They will not understand. Surprisingly, it is best not to stroke and soothe your pet when they're frightened. This may actually reinforce their fear and they may be more likely to panic in the future. Pat and praise your pet when they are relaxed.

If you're not going to be home during a fireworks display, perhaps have someone come and stay with your pets if you know they get particularly distressed. Alternatively it may be preferable to have them stay at a boarding facility in a quiet area.

It's not too late to get some DAP (dog appeasing pheromone) or Feliway (synthetic feline pheromone) from your vet that can be used in the home as a spray or diffuser to provide comforting scent specific for dogs or cats. This should be started at least a few days prior to an event, and in the area where they are most likely to find refuge. There are also products such as the 'Thundershirt' that can be used on cats and dogs to reduce anxiety.

If your dog has previously reacted badly to fireworks, discuss with your vet whether medication is suitable to get them through the season. Once it's over an individual training plan can be designed to desensitise your dog to make it easier next time.

Don't forget outside pets and livestock. They should be secured safely in their enclosures and paddocks, preferably in the quietest area of the property. Stay safe! Don't try to stop large animals if they're panicking. Just ensure they remain safe and secure at a distance, and reassure them once they calm down.

If you're planning on having a fireworks display, please consider the animals in your area. Let your neighbours know in advance so they too can keep their pets safe.

If you see an animal in distress or harmed by fireworks, please let the authorities know immediately.

THE night sky around Horowhenua will become a dazzling display of colour as thousands of people celebrate Guy Fawkes, but how much will it cost in injuries and property damage?

Bracing for fireworks

By PETER FRANKLIN Volunteer fire brigades and St John ambulance staff around the district are gearing up in anticipation of what could turn from a night of family fun letting fireworks off to a night of burns and fires.

Levin volunteer fire brigade Chief Fire Officer Lindsay Walker says, while most people take the necessary precautions and do everything right on Guy Fawkes night, there is a small minority who ruin it with their ‘silly’ behaviour.

“I am still amazed at the behaviour of some people who seem to think it is funny to light fireworks and put them in people’s letterboxes, or throw them at animals and other people.”

He says people have to remember that fireworks, while intended as an entertainment, are in fact an explosive and should be treated as such.

“Over the years I have seen preventable accidents that have caused both personal harm and property damage, and have come to the belief that instead of buying

fireworks for home it is far better value, and much safer, for everyone to go to properly organised displays,” he said.

While many would still argue they can have a better time letting fireworks off at home, Mr Walker says that if this is the case, then it is important people follow some simple rules to minimise the risks.

Ensure fireworks are kept well away from people, put pets inside and keep them there, make sure there is a garden hose attached to a tap, just in case a bush or grass catches fire, and a bucket of water close by for anyone who does get hit by a spark and gets burnt.

Do not allow children to light crackers, make sure that a responsible adult is in charge of the fireworks.

Mr Walker also cautioned against storing fireworks for New Year’s Eve and other occasions.

“Being explosives, they do deteriorate making them unstable. The big risk with storing fireworks is, if there is a fire in a home or shed, they not only accelerate the fire, they also endanger the firefighters.”

Horowhenua showjumpers are already a force to be reckoned with and the season has just begun.

Grand Prix titles in both the horse and pony arenas were claimed at Wairarapa A & P Show on the weekend.

Manawatu College student Shanae McKay, 15, gave hint of what was to come after finishing in second place riding Kabo So Far the week before at the Wairarapa Area Showjumping Championships. She only had to wait a few days to take top honours in the same event at Wairarapa A & P show, riding her second seed Guthrie. McKay produced a double clear round, the only combination of 17 starters to do so.

Just four came through to the jump-off over the course by Levin designer Gary Sinclair.

Takapau rider Matt Irvine, who had pipped McKay the previous weekend, reversed placings, finishing runnerup aboard Fun House after taking a rail in the second round.

The Wairarapa A & P Show Grand Prix horse title was also claimed by a Horowhenua combination.

Lucy Akers from Opiki riding Letitbe headed home the four faulters in the jump-off to take the win in 49.27 seconds.

Claire Wilson, Waipukurau, was second aboard McMillans Tipsey and third on McMillans Claremont.

The weekend before Akers finished runnerup in the class on her evergreen international mount Tinapai.

Akers also featured in the Mitavite Six Year Old Series riding Hermanito, sharing first place with Waikanae rider Pearl Delaney-Girdleston on Illustrious and Ashley Hart, Hastings, aboard Kiwi Lux. â– Full results on page 23

Levin students excel in essay competition

An essay by Katie Kerins submitted to the Royal Commonwealth Society 2014 Essay Competition was awarded Bronze in the Junior Section.

The RCS received more than 9500 entries from more than 500 schools in 44 Commonwealth countries.

Christmas gardening and shopping CHRISTMAS: It’s that time of year again.

Digging in WALLY RICHARDS Christmas is getting very near, with only about six weeks to go, and many of you, like myself, are still thinking what to give someone who is so hard to buy for.

Perennial plants can be enjoyed for years making them excellent gift choices for loved ones and friends. I know this because people will phone me asking about a plant they were given in the past, that is not faring so well, and they need to revive it because it was a special gift.

Think about this; a young couple with a family are given an apple tree to plant on their section for Christmas. Within a few years that tree is producing a great harvest of fresh, healthy apples for the family to enjoy.

As long as that tree is providing an annual harvest the giver will be remembered, even from beyond the grave.

I know of roses that were gifts 30 to 40 years ago still producing an abundance of blooms each year given by a mother or grandparents, long passed but cherished in memory through the annual flowering.

Fruit trees, roses or a specimen plant gift can make the giver, in a sense, immortal for a long time.

This Christmas, think gardening and the pleasure, plus health benefits, it can have for the receiver.

Here are a few ideas starting with a glasshouse, either A-frame or lean-to.

They come as kits and you can help put it together for the receiver. I recommend a glass, glasshouse as they will last for a lifetime and only need panes replaced if broken.

I have three glasshouses, all of which are over 40 years old and still going strong.

cuttings, and ideal for growing more tropical plants that won’t do well outdoors in our climate. There is nothing better on a miserable winter’s day than to be pottering around in your nice warm glasshouse. More information about glasshouses can be found in my recent book Wally’s Glasshouse Growing for New Zealand.

How about a raised garden for a elderly parent or a young family to grow vegetables in?

You can construct an ideal one on-site using roofing iron and 100 x 100mm posts (painted to keep the chemicals sealed).

The structure just sits on the ground (or concrete) and it makes an excellent place to grow vegetables, once it has been filled to two thirds with organic waste and compost. My book Gardening & Health explains the process.

Next to consider is a compost maker and by far the best are the tumbler ones, as they will convert organic waste to compost in the quickest time. I purchased one some time ago as I wanted a way of making some use out of my dog’s toilet matter.

The tumbler I purchased has their droppings along with green waste, kitchen scraps and spent compost mixed together, garden lime is added along with tiger worms that I have in abundance.

The end result is an interesting

compost, which I recently placed in one of my raised gardens and have let the weeds grow to further make use of the dog manure.

It’s funny that any manure from chickens, horses etc I happily put into a vegetable garden but with dog/cat manure I hesitate to use direct, even though I know under established trees and shrubs it certainly feeds the plants very well. (Maybe it’s the meaty thing.)

A worm farm is also another excellent gardening gift producing worm casts and worm pee to the benefit of your gardens as well as recycling all kitchen green waste.

A rose in a container makes a lovely gift and now is the time to purchase and pot up. You need one bush or standard rose, one container that is about 20 litres or more, a bag of compost, a punnet of trailing lobelia or alyssum. Make sure the container selected is either straight up and down or that the top is wider than the base with no middle bit wider than the top. (The rose has to be removed and root pruned every 2-3 years and if the top is more narrow than any other part you have to smash the container to remove.)

Fill the container with purchased compost to about half full and place some sheep manure pellets, blood & bone, Rok Solid and Neem Granules before adding the rose removed from its bag or pot. The final height should be about 2-3cm from the rim to allow for food and watering.

Plant the lobelia or alyssum around the edge so they will trail over. Not only does it make it more decorative but the foliage helps reduce moisture loss from mix and they certainly let you know when the mix is drying out. Place the rose in a good light shelter spot outside till you are ready to wrap and give. A final touch can be spaying the leaves with Vaporgard to make them really green and shiny.

Similar can be done with a fruit tree but then the container wants to be about 50 litres or more, and instead of planting flowers around the rim go for either a herb such as parsley, thyme or basil. The fruit tree can be any variety you would like to give, from citrus, feijoa, to pip or stone fruit. Dwarf types are good but not necessary as they all need root pruning in the future.

Annual flowers or herbs can be potted into nice containers using compost as the growing medium. Pot up now with colour spots or herb plants then they should be putting on a really good show about Christmas time. Children can help potting up for grandparents and then can proudly say they did it. Inexpensive and very much appreciated.

It is surprising the variety of products and ideas one can find in your local garden centre, which you will not find in main stream retail. Makes Christmas shopping easy.

Binoculars can be just as good as a telescope

By GLEN SMITH Sadly last month’s lunar eclipse was clouded out around most of the country; luckily the Sun gave us something to look at instead. A large sunspot, AR2192, appeared in the middle of the month creating solar flares and electrical interference around high-latitude places. The picture, taken by me on October 22 through a white light filter attached to my telescope, shows the large sunspot and smaller ones.

The AR2192 sunspot was estimated at 125,000km wide, which is almost as big as Jupiter. This may sound huge but according to records, is quite small.

Study at te Takere NCEA exams for our senior college students are just around the corner and Te Takere wants to help them study.

There are a number of ways we can support them during this important time in their academic lives. For the next few weeks there will be more tables on the mezzanine floor — the library’s quiet space — for students to settle down at for some serious study.

Pumping out the poppies Linda Johnstone started crocheting poppies to keep her hands busy when she gave up smoking earlier in the year, creating 86 of the symbolic Anzac flower in the first month.

She is part of a growing band of women in Levin creating handmade poppies for a special Anzac Day tribute next year.

Inspired by projects in Australia, Linda decided to create a wall of poppies to mark 100 years since the first Anzac Day next April.

She has been joined by colleagues and customers at Te Takere, where she is AA Services lead. Family, friends and acquaintances of people are also joining in. Her latest recruits are members of the social crochet group which meets every Wednesday at Te Takere.

The crochet group was started by Jenny Goyne in September, essentially to help people learn to crochet but anyone

can take along their favourite handcraft and join in. Now the group is producing crocheted or knitted poppies to adorn a panel in Te Takere for the Anzac Day tribute next April, and are enjoying being part of the poppy project.

Chris Wells learned to crochet from Jenny but said the most important part for her was making the poppies.

“I saw in the paper they were making poppies and I wanted to be involved in it,” she said.

Sally McPhee is also learning to crochet and said, as a newcomer to Levin, it was also a great way to meet people.

“It’s a lovely little social group,” she said.

Anyone is welcome to join the crochet group, or to pick up a pattern and start crocheting or knitting in their own time.

“We have more than 150 poppies, but we need a lot more to fill a panel in the main Te Takere space,” Linda said.

Plenty of fish caught

By TANIA WOOD The fish were biting for members of the Waitarere Fishing Club during their annual Labour Weekend club competition.

Snapper, kahawai and red cod were weighed in, a total of more than 30 fish, with Chris Judd hooking the biggest catch of the competition, a 5.5kg snapper.

According to club member Murray Hanlon, fishing has improved over the past months, despite changeable weather conditions, with boaties reporting good snapper, red cod and gurnard numbers.

“Surfcasters are having a bonanza time catching kahawai at the Manawatu River mouth,” said Mr Hanlon.

Longliners were catching mainly red cod, waiting for the snapper to hopefully start

coming in closer over the coming days, while white baiters enjoyed an excellent few days in early October.

“We’ll be keeping fingers crossed for some good weather and fishing leading up to the Christmas period,” he said.

Prizes were awarded for the biggest catches of the year at the club’s annual meeting last month: Heaviest snapper/heaviest snapper longline (Harcourt Shield/ Fletcher Memorial Trophy) – 12.01kg, Geoff Herewini.

Heaviest snapper surfcasting (Ocean Blue Cup) – 2.84kg, Aubrey Nepia.

Central Bowling Club Levin: The club recently played the Championship Men's singles, with 30 men entered, played under the two life system. After four games were played on day one, nine remained. D. Walker drew the bye. On day two, after two games played, it was down to four men, D. Madden, L. Bevan, B. Moran, all with one life, and Walker with two. In the semi-final, Walker beat Moran 21-11 and Madden beat Bevan 21-13. The final between Walker and Madden saw Walker come out the winner 21-13.

Toyota hybrid tops seven million sales Global sales of Toyota’s hybrid cars (including Lexus) have now passed the milestone of seven million vehicles.

Firmly established as the world’s largest producer of hybrid vehicles, the Toyota hybrid tally includes 3.3 million sold in Japan, 2.5 million in the United States and 770,000 in Europe.

The latest one-million sales were achieved in record time — just nine months after Toyota (including Lexus) reached the six-million hybrid threshold in December last year, which doubled the three million total passed in February 2011.

The milestone of 1 million hybrids was reached in May 2007.

Globally, Prius accounts for almost half the overall total with 3.36 million sales — making it easily the world’s bestselling hybrid vehicle.

Toyota estimates its hybrid vehicles have cut carbon-dioxide emissions by approximately 49 million tonnes and saved about 18 million kilolitres of fuel compared with vehicles of similar size and driving performance using petrolonly engines.

Toyota began selling the Prius in the Japan in December 1997 and in New Zealand in 2001.

Camry Hybrid has been built in Australia since 2010 while the Prius was expanded into a family of three vehicles in 2012 with the addition of the Prius c city car and the Prius v seven-seater.

Over the 17 years since the first Prius was launched, Toyota has endeavoured to encourage the mass-market adoption of hybrid vehicles, which use less fuel and emit fewer tailpipe emissions than equivalent petrol-only models.

Toyota has positioned hybrid and its related developments as core technologies for the 21st century.

The company therefore plans to continue working to enhance performance, reduce costs and expand its product line-up to create vehicles that
