LITTLE LIFESAVER LIFE TUBES

A Life Tube is a plastic cylinder containing an information sheet, which when completed, details your relevant medical and personal information. The tube is kept in the household refrigerator.

The red sticker provided should be placed on the outside of the refrigerator.

In the event of an emergency Police, Ambulance or Fire Services are called, they are alerted by the red sticker to the fact that vital information is available inside the refrigerator.

The information is also available to a neighbour or other person who may find someone in difficulty.

Originally Life Tubes were promoted particularly for the elderly and people living alone, but they have been found to be invaluable for people of all ages.

Life Tube is an Age Concern initiative, endorsed by the New Zealand Police.

“The tube contains a page to be filled in showing all your personal details, medications, that kind of thing,” Age Concern Horowhenua administrator Lynn Pettigrew said.

“It is returned to the Life Tube which is then stored in the refrigerator. A sticker on the outside of the fridge notifies emergency services that a tube is available.”

The plastic cylinder looks much like a pill container with a screw on cap.

It sits neatly in the fridge, taking up minimal room but could be a lifesaver.

“Emergency services have been trained to look for the sticker if they attend an incident and the person concerned is unable to communicate,” said Age Concern activities coordinator Robynne Merwood.

The fridge was chosen as the ideal place to store the tube.

“It has a good chance of surviving earthquakes, floods and fire,” Lynn said. “Almost all homes have one, and they’re usually found in the same place in each home.”

Remanded in custody A Levin man, 23, has been remanded in custody charged with the aggravated robbery at a Liverpool Street home on Wednesday August 6.

Officer in charge of the case Detective Peter Vine said the man, arrested on Monday, has also been charged with attempted robbery of a dairy and driving offences, and is remanded in custody to reappear in the Levin District Court on Tuesday September 9.

David said the weather was bitterly cold, he did not have a train timetable and didn’t know what time or sort of trains to expect.

“I didn’t even know if any freight trains were going to come the other way on the

Saturday afternoon when the steam train was coming back,” David said.

“I was very lucky with the weather and the light did not change as the photos were taken about 30 minutes apart.”

David said he loves a photographic challenge. “I will never give up, I love to get photos like this even thought it means sitting in the cold. Getting a photo like this makes it all worth while.”

Council criticism

Response to Councillor Tony Rush letter re HDRRAI. On Sunday 3rd August I went down to Playford Park, Levin to watch, from the sideline, two teams giving their all playing representative rugby.

Horowhenua reps were playing Feilding. There was no question as to who I would barrack for as my grandson was playing for Feilding.

So, with others on the sideline I sent my criticisms, encouragement and, I believe, helpful instructions, including a few dubious questions about the referee, towards the players, along with those around me.

Some folks questioned where my loyalty lay but nothing would stop me from being, what I considered, loyal to my grandson.

His team from Feilding lost to Horowhenua 25 to 15 but I was

proud of his endeavours and he was covered in mud which proved to me he had played with good intentions.

Now what does this have to do with Councillor Tony Rush’s letter re Horowhenua Resident and Ratepayers chairman David Thomson?

Well, Horowhenua District Council are working hard and they get a lot of mud on their faces and we get a good deal of criticism and encouragement from the sidelines but like those at the rugby, whether mothers, brothers, poppas, fathers or coaches, we all applaud loudly when a ‘try’ is scored.

So, Mr Thomson we, the HDC, need you and all the criticism, applause and support your team can bring to the table, or in the Chronicle. Keep it up. You are the best indicator as to how we play the game.

So, to all of you who pay your

rates, like those at the rugby who pay at the gates, you have the right to have your say as to how you see us performing. At the game the other day one mother from Feilding told her son, in quite colourful language, to “keep your eye on the ball”.

A good piece of advice for us all.

Te Takere naming

When the ratepayers’ millstone, Te Takere, was at the submissions to council stage I expressed my opposition to using a Maori name.

My reason was that as less than 1 per cent of New Zealanders were fluent in Maori and only 3 per cent had a smattering it seemed silly to hide the library and information centre behind a name very few would understand. (The name Library is on the building if one

looks very closely.)

More recently I read that the new health centre has also been given a Maori name, ‘Te Waiora', with ‘your community health centre' in very small letters beneath it.

As this seemed to me, for the same reasons, to be rather silly I asked a person well experienced in such matters why this fixation with Maori names.

Their answer was: Maori are the least likely to use a library and the least likely to go for medical help at an early stage of a health problem so it is thought that by giving such places a Maori name, Maori would feel more comfortable in using the facility.

If I were a Maori I would find this answer insulting and patronising. In the case of Te Takere, it is really the concern of events organisers and local businesses if visitors cannot find the information

Every year Foxton Beach is filled with thousands of tourists, holiday makers and day trippers.

In the case of an accident, broken arm, campfire burn, bad cut and so on, strangers to the area would hot foot it to the main centre, Foxton, looking for a sign such as Doctor, Hospital, Medical Centre. They certainly would not be looking for ‘Te Waiora', or slowing down to read the small print.

Common sense would be to have a big ‘Information Centre' sign above the veranda at Te Takere and the sign at the health centre to be twice the size with ‘Health Centre' in letters as big as Te Waiora. Maybe there is no place for common sense when one is being twee and patronising a whole race of people.

Rotary surplus to boost community

By TANYA WOOD Cheques totalling $6800 have been handed out to local organisations by Levin Rotary, from money left over from its district conference held earlier this year.

Horowhenua Rotarian and District Governor of the Lower North Island, Deb Gimblett, said it felt a little like playing Santa Claus. “It’s pretty unusual to have money left over after hosting a conference but our committee unanimously agreed to distribute the money back into the community.”

The District 9940 Rotary Conference 2014, held March 21 to 23 in Foxton, attracted more than 250 Rotarians from around the lower North Island, who spent one of their three days working on local community projects.

The money would go back to these organisations to help with any extras needed, said Mrs Gimblett.

Among the recipients was Te Takere.

Children and teen librarian Deborah MacDonald said its cheque for $1500 would be used to buy more interactive books and music CDs for its early childhood outreach programme. “We make up to 22 visits a month to early childhood centres, reading to as many as 400 pre-schoolers in that time. Reading aloud helps children build vocabulary and language skills. Many more mums return to work earlier than in the past, and I can help fill that gap, giving children more opportunity to enjoy a fun programme of stories, action songs and rhymes. We are very grateful to Rotary for this kind donation.”

Also receiving cheques for amounts varying from $500 to $1000 were Foxton Beach School, Coley St School, Shannon School, Manawatu College, Levin Food Bank, Te Pa Harakeke O Awahou (Foxton kindergarten) and Otaki Children’s Health Camp.

HEADS UP — WAIOPEHU COLLEGE

Building on success Waiopehu College prides itself on its culturally responsive leadership, teaching and learning practices. We are continually looking at ways to accelerate student achievement with a long-term focus having higher NCEA achievement for Maori students.

To this end, over the past three years, the school has been involved in a Ministry of Education initiative called He Kakano.

The purpose of this programme was to improve educational success for Maori students. Research shows strategies that work positively for Maori students work for all students.

Having completed this programme and seen improvements in our Level 1 and 2 NCEA pass rates for all our students in 2013, we have opted to be a part of a follow on initiative called Building on Success.

This programme combines the best from Te Kotahitanga and He Kakano as well as other initiatives in secondary literacy and numeracy programmes, building on current success and looking at classroom teaching through professional observations and feedback to teachers. The aim is to improve cultural and relational pedagogy (the method and practice of teaching as an academic subject or theoretical concept). Five staff members have trained to observe and shadow coach staff whom will initially opt into the initiative.

We are also busy creating our strategic plan to implement blended e-learning into the college. At this stage we are looking at using Google documents as a platform to

Horowhenua College Year 11 students were campaigning in Te Takere last week to raise awareness and funds for human rights organisation Amnesty International.

It was part of their Level 1 Studies of Society assessment.

“People all over the world are being subjected to torture,” said Megan McKenzie. “That includes electric shocks, being hung from walls and ceilings, beatings and whippings. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states no one has the right to hurt or torture you.”

The students had wristbands and badges which could be swapped for a gold coin donation and people could take a photo or a selfie with the Amnesty International thumbs down to torture sign.

The photos would be printed and sent to Amnesty International.

Rugby players help police tackle suspects with GRAEME JARVIS Community Constable Last Thursday night saw police and members of the public working in tandem to get a fantastic outcome, resulting in the arrest of two people, the recovery of two stolen motor vehicles and the recovery of a large amount of stolen property.

The story began Thursday night, August 10, when a Subaru motor car was stolen from a Levin address.

Four nights later, two people in the stolen car were allegedly responsible for breaking into the changing rooms at Playford Park and several cars in the car park at the Levin Cosmopolitan Club.

Items stolen included wallets, keys and cellphones stolen from the changing rooms, and a van parked in the Playford Park car park.

Unbeknown to the pair, members of the Horowhenua Rugby team training at the park that night, were among the victims.

When the thefts were discovered, and police advised, rugby team members began making their own enquiries to locate the culprits.

Using GPS technology

inside one of the stolen cellphones, the culprits were tracked to a local address where the stolen van and alleged offenders were found. Rugby team members enthusiastically assisted police in apprehending the pair.

Stolen property found in both vehicles were linked to the break in and thefts from cars.

One of the men apprehended gave false details but was found to be wanted on several warrants and had featured on Police 10/7 just last week.

Two men, aged 26 and 27, have appeared in Palmerston North District Court and were remanded in custody.

Residents in the Miro St area of Levin have become concerned again at a spate of small fires in the street over recent weeks. A spate of similar fires were reported earlier this year in the same area.

Two other small fires were also reported last week, one in the toilets in the Warehouse car park and in two wheelie bins in

Prouse Street.

It is possible a cigarette butt carelessly disposed of caused the fire in the toilets.

Fires have such potential to be life threatening. Both the police and fire service are encouraging anyone with information to come forward. People can phone Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 in complete confidentiality.

It still appears that drivers in Levin are taking a cavalier attitude when driving, with a huge variety of offences detected in the last week.

These include driving while disqualified, driving while suspended and forbidden, demerit point excesses and drink driving. In many cases vehicles have been impounded.

Local officers will continue to proactively police traffic breaches and anyone caught can expect to be dealt with warnings.

Seminar to look at suicide rate A major issue facing New Zealand is the number of people committing suicide, on average 10 suicides a week.

While the number of young people dying is decreasing, there is a trend developing in more people over the age of 60 taking their own lives.

Acknowledging the issue, members of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Levin have organised a seminar addressing suicide.

Among the speakers will be Clinical Phycologist Pauline Taufa, Dr Straverton Kautoke, secondary school teacher Alisi Tatafu and fitness instructor Una Taufa.

Church Pastor Toa Lutu said this is a major issue affecting many communities and it is important that people in the community get an understanding of the symptoms and how to deal with them.

The seminar is open to everyone and he encourages people to come, listen and learn.

The suicide prevention initiative seminar starts at 5.30pm tomorrow at the Seventh Day Adventist Church on Cambridge St, Levin.

LIVING WELL WITH DEMENTIA Most of us know what dementia is. We generally know someone who has had alzheimers or some other form of dementia.

What we don’t always know is that with support it is possible to live well with dementia.

Dementia occurs as a result of physical changes in the structure of the brain. It affects memory, thinking, behaviour and emotion.

Living well and remaining independent for longer – what you can do to lessen the impact of dementia • Link with support groups.

• Keep a diary or notebook.

• Make lists.

The first step

– get a diagnosis

If you are concerned about your health, or the health of someone close to you, seek help from a general practice (GP).

An early diagnosis enables you and those around you to put support in place.

Common symptoms are: • recent memory loss that affects your daily living routine • problems with language • changes in mood, behaviour or personality • disorientation to time and place.

Help and information is available through your local Alzheimer’s Society on: 0800 004 001 For more information contact: ◆ your general practice team ◆ www.alzheimers.org.nz

• Have structure and routine.

• Have regular health checks.

• Eat a healthy diet.

• Don’t drink too much alcohol.

• Stay socially active.

• Rest when you need to and learn to relax.

• Keep important telephone numbers nearby or on speed dial.

• Use reminders to lock doors and check appliances.

• Ask for your driving to be assessed.

• Organise medication packs.

• Take your medications correctly.

• Include your general practice, optician, audiologist and dentist in your health care.

• Plan ahead for when you are no longer able to make and communicate decisions for yourself about health and property.

• Talk to your general practice team/health provider about what medical decisions you may face and plan for these.

Supporting someone with dementia Communicate clearly – be patient, particularly in the early stages when those with dementia may struggle to find the right words. When asking a question, make sure you get the person’s attention and keep questions simple and direct.

Avoid arguing or contradicting. Avoid being condescending and don’t talk about someone in front of them as though they are not there.

Loss and grief – as dementia progresses, there can be a huge sense of “loss”. Loss of independence, status, memories, the ability to drive. Acknowledge this.

Physical – people with dementia may have other physical factors which may be affecting them, such as urinary tract infection, arthritis, angina. Be especially aware of sudden changes or deterioration. Ensure they don’t forget to drink and eat well. Dehydration can cause many different problems.

Environment – get the balance right between too much or too little stimulation. Ensure routines are maintained where possible. A night light can be useful.

Work together – ensure all organisations, health workers and others involved in caring and supporting someone with dementia work together and know what each other is doing.

Foxton 1867: Among those who purchased sections in the 1866 Auction were Robert Kirk, William Loudon, Francis Robinson, John Knowles, Gibbs Jordan, George Snelson, Alexander Gray, Dr Batten Smith, J T Stewart, Henry Wintersgill, Geo Nye, Rev Duncan and Joseph Trask.

Exactly what was in the town at the time is not recorded but by 1867 the following were advertised in the Wellington Gazette: Gray’s Store, Adelaide Hotel (later the Family and today the Foxton), H Brown confectioner, C H Symons butcher, J W Liddell’s store,

W Bennett’s White Hart Hotel (later the Manawatu).

Other services available would have been T U Cook’s wharf and store, a police station, Loudon’s Store, the school, and the Presbyterian church (now the Little Theatre).

During 1867 the first local authority was set up with the establishment of the Foxton Road Board. Its members were F Robinson, G Nye, W Loudon, W Wintersgill and the local policeman J Purcell, who was appointed Collector of Rates. Its area of responsibility stretched to the Manawatu River at Whirokino, Kerikeri Rd to the east, Motuiti Rd to the north and partway to the beach to the west.

The locals did have time to play and one of the most popular activities was horse racing. Events had been held at several locations in the early years but in 1865 a petition (with 77 signatures) was sent to Wellington asking for the land to be set aside for horse racing.

It was not until 1869 that the Manawatu Racecouse Act was passed and a permanent home, still being used today, was set up.

Observant locals may notice on the old racing club office, that has been rebuilt, the words “EST F R C 1862”.

Though there were racing activities in 1862, how did the locals know the name Foxton was to be given to their village of Te Awahou?

Fabulous Foxton Our friendly Roadhouse

By FRANKIE WEBB In the ’60s it was the Big Tex, and it has had a variety of names since but Foxton’s No 1 Roadhouse, on the corner of State Highway 1 and Norbiton Rd, is here to stay.

“My partner Brian and I opened McEwen’s cafe in Foxton township and found it was really busy,” Rae McEwen said.

“Parking in Main Street is great but not so easy for big rigs.”

That got the couple thinking, so when the former restaurant became available, they jumped at it.

“I am a coffee nut,” Rae said. “I believe people perhaps in a hurry, heading north or south, want

somewhere they can call in for a better than great coffee. If they want a meal we can do that, a snack whatever.”

Brian and Rae have ordered a woodfire pizza oven and intend to offer a delivery service to Foxton and Foxton Beach.

“We’ve done the morning and evening papers here for years, we know all the streets and quite honestly, it’s not far from here to the beach.”

Rae is introducing a gluten free menu and vegetarian fare.

“We want to make this place a bit of a hub, a place everyone can come to either sit down if they have the time, or pass through if they haven’t,” she said.

Back to a colourful life in Foxton

Jane Ellis grew up in Foxton but 27 years ago the tropics of Australia’s Northern Territory beckoned and she headed across the Tasman.

A qualified florist, she was delighted and surprised by the enormous selection of tropical flowers in Australia.

“Stuff growing in the tropics is just amazing,” Jane said. “I

worked in Darwin and the plants there are beautiful.”

She gained a lot of experience working in the industry for nearly three decades, in particular, an appreciation of colour and style.

“I decided it was time to return to Foxton. I have family here, my mum is here, I was ready to come back,” Jane said.

In November last year she arrived with the intention of

setting up a business, something unique for Foxton.

“When I was growing up here I remember there was always a florist in Foxton, I was surprised to find there wasn’t one,” she said.

Never one to waste an opportunity, Jane purchased a property on the road to Foxton Beach, on the corner of Palmer Rd. Converting the garage as quickly as possible, she got ‘Dandelions’ up and running.

“I had to get things going pretty smartly,” Jane said. “I’d just purchased a container load of gift stock.”

She chose stuff not readily available elsewhere in New Zealand.

Being the only florist in town and having a select gift range not available elsewhere has meant the shop is busier than Jane ever anticipated.

“I have another project but

that’s having to wait,” she said.

“I’ve set up some tunnel houses here on the property to grow my own flowers, I want different varieties and colours.”

With a seven-day-a-week business it could be a challenge but Jane is totally up for it.

“I called my shop Dandelions because you can’t kill weeds,” she said, a bit tongue in cheek.

“And I’m here for the long haul, just watch this space.”

Horsetram in demand The Foxton Horsetram was used 59 times last year.

While most of the trips are around Foxton on a Sunday afternoon, the tram has appeared at the Kimbolton Centennial celebrations, a wedding and of course the Foxton Easter Fair.

Resthome residents have had chartered trips around town and a number of schools, mostly from out of Horowhenua, have been on the tram for class excursions. This year the tram has been out around 30 times. Maintenance on the truck, and of course care for the horses, is ongoing. Last year horse expenses were more than $6000, truck and tram expenses almost $3500.

Trusts and organisations have helped keep it on the road.

Manawatu College student, and keen volunteer, Jayden Moore has set up a Facebook account for the horsetram.

I have started up a new group for local Dads with pre-schoolers. I am young myself at 24 but am also an active father to my 4-year-old daughter and would like to use my role to help myself become a better father and person. I am also passionate about assisting fellow fathers with the same ambitions to be more actively involved in a positive way with our kids, hence the formation of the Our Kids Father Focus Group.

My role within the Early Years Hub will involve assisting in the organizing of some good community-focused activities with the aim of lifting the active involvement we have with ‘Our Kids’. • Comprehensive initial training, specialist training in homicide, bereavement and sexual violence, supervision and a supportive and friendly environment.

Training is being held 4th, 5th, 11th & 12th October.
