ANZ bank is set to close its Levin South branch with the doors to shut for good next week.

The announcement of the May 26 closure has not pleased some customers. ‘‘I’m shifting all my business,’’ a customer told Horowhenua Chronicle. ‘‘I was with Countrywide, we were told nothing would change when we became National Bank, then when ANZ moved in we were told it definitely wouldn’t close, you just can’t trust them.’’

The Levin branch, on the corner of Queen and Oxford Streets, underwent refurbishment before the announcement was made and will become the town’s sole ANZ branch. ‘‘ANZ Levin and Levin South are combining forces,’’ said Stefan Herrick, ANZ senior manager external communications. ‘‘When we brought the ANZ and National Bank brands together we gave a commitment that there will be no frontline jobs lost, the same people at both branches will be serving customers, the (south branch) manager has found a job in another part of the bank.’’

Customers are doing more day-to-day banking online and on smartphones, and coming into branches for specialist advice, which Mr Herrick said

The direct Ohau to Waitarere Beach Road turnoff, Levin Bypass would stop this job splitting. Capital Connection

Local Commuters on the Capital Connection Service between Palmerston North and Wellington will be heartened by a recent print media news item concerning the continuation of the rail service.

While Kiwi Rail have agreed to run the Monday to Friday service up until June 2015, after consultation with local interests, there is no guarantee that the rail service will continue after the expiry of the agreed two-year period.

With Horizons Regional Council being reported as wishing to open dialogue with the Greater Wellington Regional Council, with the view to the service being subsidised and the two Regional Councils contributing, together with the NZ Transport Agency.

The Capital Connection service is unique in New Zealand as it is the only commuter rail service between two major

cities that is not subsidised by central government or local government, apparently the service is classed as part of Kiwi Rail's Tranz Scenic network which includes scenic routes such as the Tranz Scenic Rail service between Christchurch and Greymouth!

Until such time as the service is placed in the same category as the Masterton to Wellington daily rail service and the hugely subsidised Auckland rail service, Horowhenua commuters, in particular, will face increased fares and a service which could be terminated at a month's notice.

This would mean the local commuters having to use a private vehicle to Waikanae to connect with the Metro electrified service or go back to the daily grind of driving a car to Wellington and back to Levin, not an environmentally friendly routine or a fuel efficient means of travel.

On Monday, in between downpours, I went to return a plate to a neighbour — just a short walk away. My timing was badly misjudged — the rain pelted down so I handed over the bag and started to walk back. The workmen have been putting a new water pipe in Julyan Street and a lovely digger driver leapt out of his cab, stripped off his raincoat, covered me with it and saw me back to my gate.

Bug sees ward access restricted There is currently an outbreak of gastroenteritis in Ward 26 at Palmerston North Hospital.

Admission to this area is currently restricted, and all transfers to other wards or discharges to residential care facilities have been stopped until further notice. Patients are able to be discharged to go home.

All the usual precautionary measures are being taken in order to reduce the chance of the outbreak spreading further.

Patients will be managed in contact isolation, with staff wearing gowns and gloves for patient contact.

of health said, the rapid increase in cases in ward 26 indicated the organism causing this outbreak was highly infectious. There have also been more gastroenteritis outbreaks than normal in the community this year.

Mr Weir said a lot of these outbreaks had been due to norovirus, which is a highly infectious organism. ‘‘It is for these reasons that I would advise against visiting the ward unless absolutely necessary,’’ he said. ‘‘If visiting is absolutely necessary, please adhere to visiting hours (2pm-8pm). It is recommended that visits are kept short

and visitors should ensure they use the hand gel located at the end of the wards on entry and exit.’’

The hand washing facilities available in each patient room should also be used. Hand washing for 20 seconds with soap and warm water, followed by effective drying for 20 seconds is required.

For anyone who is currently unwell, you are advised not to visit the hospital. It is also recommended that children do not visit any area with an outbreak.

Common symptoms of gastroenteritis are vomiting, diarrhoea

and stomach pains. The organisms that cause gastroenteritis are highly infectious.

Most people recover from gastroenteritis quickly but it can be serious in some people, particularly if they become dehydrated.

Children, elderly and people with weak immune systems are more likely to suffer serious illness.

If you, or somebody you are caring for, is extremely unwell and you feel you need to take them to the doctor, call Healthline 0800 611 116 for medical advice. If you are advised to go to the doctor or hospital ring ahead to advise them you are bringing in a person

with gastroenteritis.

Wash and dry hands regularly when caring for sick people, before preparing food and after using the toilet.

Anyone with symptoms of gastroenteritis should avoid contact with others. It is important that they do not visit rest homes, hospitals or attend school or Early Child Education centres until 48 hours after symptoms of gastroenteritis have stopped.

Personal hygiene is the best way to minimise the spread of gastroenteritis. Hand washing for 20 seconds with soap and warm water, followed by effective drying for 20 seconds is required.

Celebrating with four generations

By FRANKIE WEBB Dot Unverricht, 93, has called Levin home town for 59 years.

She and late husband Jack moved here and went on to bring up a family of four girls — Judy, Lynne, Elaine and Janet, who died from cancer. The girls attended Levin East School and Horowhenua College.

Dot worked at A.W. Allen’s Department Store, starting as the tea lady and working her way up to serving in the Haberdashery Department. The store employed many locals, including daughters Janet and Lynne. Dot loved dancing and was a keen indoor bowls enthusiast but her family said she mostly concentrated on bringing up her family.

Nowadays Dot lives at Gardenview.

Despite family moving from Levin, she still enjoys their visits. Visiting for Dot’s 93rd birthday were four generations of the family. Dot was delighted to be introduced to great great grandson Ashton, 1, for the first time.

Astrophysicist to speak

Police say thank you to station stalwart

Professor Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell, the woman credited with discovering pulsars, is visiting Te Manawa, Palmerston North at the invitation of the Horowhenua Astronomical Society. ‘‘We are extremely honoured to have someone of this calibre visiting,’’ Society member Allen Little said. ‘‘It really is a coup.’’

Dame Bell Burnell is an astrophysicist from Northern Ireland.

In 1999 she was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire for services to astronomy and promoted to Dame Commander in 2007. She will be at Te Manawa on June 11, at 6.30pm.

By PETER FRANKLIN Police current and retired gathered at the Levin station on Friday to acknowledge the end of 30-plus years of service to the police and to the community at large.

Raymond Fowler, accompanied by his family, were the guests of honour at a special presentation on Friday where his long service was acknowledged and praised.

Senior Sergeant Sarn Paroli, officer in change in Levin, said Mr Fowler was always there when you needed him and he had built a special relationship with new and old staff alike.

He first started volunteering with police in 1984, looking after prisoners and guarding crime scenes.

In 1991 Mr Fowler received a police commendation of distinction after he and

a sergeant he was on patrol with came across a car that had rolled. Petrol had spilled from the upturned vehicle and caught fire.

Mr Fowler and the sergeant went to the aid of the unconscious driver and pulled him out of the burning vehicle.

That was only one of many stories that were shared at the presentation.

In 1998 he was made a special civil defence constable, and was employed by police in 2009 as a part-time jailer and handyman.

Mr Paroli said Mr Fowler was a more than just a person you saw at work, he did so much for police and behind the scenes for the community at large.

Ill health has forced Mr Fowler to retire, however he leaves great memories and some of his sense of humour at the station.

Elderly fall victim airlifted A tourist from Auckland had to be flown by the Palmerston North rescue helicopter to hospital after suffering serious injuries after a 40 metre fall.

The elderly man fell 40 metres from a ledge overlooking the Wanganui River Valley, landing heavily on rocks.

First on the scene were the owners of the Bridge to Nowhere Lodge, who used a jetboat to get to the injured man.

Once the injured man had been carefully moved on to the boat, he was

taken to the nearby lodge.

The Bridge to Nowhere Lodge is a wilderness location 20km upstream from Pipiriki and, with no vehicle access, the rescue helicopter was requested.

The helicopter arrived without delay at the lodge, landing on the lawns, and the onboard St John Ambulance Intensive Care Paramedic stabilised the patient before he was airlifted to Whanganui Hospital in a serious condition.

Music teacher sad to give up role

By DAVID HAXTON Joe McCartney has retired from his role as itinerant music teacher at Otaki College after over 29 years.

The college newsletter says ‘‘Joe has made a significant impact here during his time in this role. A large number of students are now highly proficient and passionate musicians due to his ability to connect, build relationships and teach students to a very high standard. ‘‘His smile, warmth and ability to teach music will be missed by us here at the college.’’

Mr McCartney, of Levin, was a bit sad to leave the college. ‘‘I enjoyed my time there. It’s a good college to work at. ‘‘The people are really nice. ‘‘What I miss more than anything is the interaction with the students. ‘‘They were just so much fun.’’

Some of the highlights was seeing college band Chelsea winning the Wellington region award in the Rock Quest competition and a guitar trio getting a third placing and a highly commended award in the Wellington

Chamber Music competition.

He has relinquished his involvement at Otaki College so he can spend more time with his mother who is unwell.

Mr McCartney, who teaches all types of music from heavy metal to classical, has worked in four colleges — Otaki, Kapiti, Horowhenua and Waiopehu.

He still works at Waiopehu College, Mondays and Tuesdays, which has been his base college, and does some private tuition too.

Born in Newcastle, England, he started playing guitar when he was about seven years old. ‘‘The very first tune I played was Tom Dooley and I can still see myself plucking away on the guitar thinking ‘I really like this’.’’

He came to New Zealand with family when he was 12 and started a band [The Dominoes] with mates from Horowhenua College. ‘‘I played my first paid gig at 13, which was at the Kotuku scout club hall opening in Levin.’’

He went on to play in various bands including Group One which toured with Ray Columbus and the Invaders, and The Chicks.

Another pleasing turnout on arts trail

By FRANKIE WEBB Horowhenua Arts Trail was a resounding success, for the third year in a row. ‘‘Each year it just gets bigger and bigger,’’ chairman of the organising committee, Joan Keogh said. ‘‘This year we had more multi-artist venues, it worked so well.’’

Visitors from throughout New Zealand and some from overseas took to the trail.

In previous years trailblazers had to visit some out of the way studios, which were worth the effort but often missed. ‘‘By moving some of the artists who were off the beaten track to a collaborative venue they received better exposure,’’ Mrs Keogh said.

The first Horowhenua Arts Trail attracted 40 exhibitors and about 1500 visitors. ‘‘It’s not easy to estimate how many visitors we actually have,’’ she said. ‘‘Some people may do the entire trail while others may just call on the specific ones that interest them.’’

Mrs Keogh is confident numbers have grown each year, this year being no exception.

Artist numbers increased to 59. ‘‘Being Mother’s Day is always a good drawcard,’’ she said. ‘‘We had a large number of families going on the trail, some buying gifts for mum, others for themselves and of course some just enjoying the exhibition. I know a number of artists received commissions, some sold work over the two days.’’

The weekend is already booked for next year. ‘‘Around 99 per cent of artists have intimated

New secretary needed

Horowhenua Arts Trail secretary Jill Knox is standing down to spend more time painting. The voluntary position is not a huge one, it gets busy closer to trail weekend, chairman Joan Keogh said.

‘‘Otherwise it’s a matter of attending a monthly meeting for about an hour,’’ she said. ‘‘We would love someone to take Jill’s place, now is a good time because we are heading into the quiet time.’’

ART FOR MUM Artist Judy Batten invited a small boy to ‘make an offer’ for a piece of work he admired, his budget for Mother’s Day was $25.

He was given the piece despite a pricetag of almost double the amount.

Another very young chap approached artist Joan Keogh to enquire if art classes were available for school children at the Horowhenua Art Society studio.

Children’s art classes haven’t been held for a number of years, but the chap was invited as a ‘special guest’ to attend an adult class later in the week.

Community workshops a huge success More than 140 people from 70 community groups have benefited from a recent series of workshops for knowledge gaining and skills training.

Twelve workshops were offered to volunteer groups and non-profit organisations in the Community Capacity Building Programme run

by Horowhenua District Council.

They included Information Privacy, Designing Posters In-House, Grants and Funding, First Aid, Pasifika Talanoa Training, Governance and Finance for Non-Profits, Speaking with Impact, Organisational Code of Ethics, Emergency Management Planning and The Treaty of Waitangi.

The second series of workshops starts in July.

Horowhenua Deputy Mayor Garry Good said the programme allowed Council to provide learning opportunities which could be of real value to community groups.

“The impact of offering training, as well as avenues of financial support, has spoken for itself,’’ he said. ‘‘Community feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. More than 50 people have shared their appreciation for the workshops and we even received a Draft Annual Plan submission that congratulated the scheme.’’ he said.

The last workshop on May 12 was a full-day's training on the Treaty of Waitangi, hosted at Matau Marae, where a copy of the treaty, signed by Matau Iwi, is kept.

It was attended by 18 people, some who had never set foot on a marae, representing 15 community groups. The workshop was led by Dr Bronwyn Campbell, lecturer at Massey University’s School of Maori Art, Knowledge and Education.

Topics included significant milestones in New Zealand’s political and cultural history such as the Declaration of Independence in 1835, providing context to the environment with which the Treaty was established.

Workshop participant Rose Rickett, of Jack Allen House in Levin, says she gained a much greater understanding of the Treaty and would be able to apply it in her work. ‘‘Matau Marae was an awesome place and atmosphere for me to take it all in. ‘‘I did realise how little I knew, but I was able to understand with ease. Dr Bronwyn Campbell was an amazing speaker and very passionate about the subject.’’

Black April on roads as safety basics ignored The death toll on the nation’s roads has reached triple figures, with the worst April in four years. ‘‘Frustratingly, it’s still the basics,’’ said Assistant Commissioner Road Policing, Dave Cliff. ‘‘Drinking and driving, going too fast for the conditions and not wearing a seatbelt, or a combination of all three is needlessly killing large numbers of New Zealanders on the nation’s roads every week.’’

So far this year more than 100 people have died, with a third of the year barely over. This is 15 more than at the same time in 2013. Preliminary reports from Police into

the 96 fatalities that occurred up to April 30 show that more than a quarter involved an alcohol-affected driver, more than a third involved a speeding driver, and half of all the deaths involved both factors.

Preliminary information gathered by Police shows: ■ 27 of the 96 deaths involved an alcohol affected driver.

■ 38 deaths involved a speeding driver.

■ Together, speed and alcohol accounted for 48 deaths.

■ 22 of those killed were not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, while 11 of them were involved

in crashes where alcohol was also suspected.

■ 74 of the 96 deaths were on the open road (roads with a speed limit of more than 70km/h).

■ 41 of the 74 open road deaths were on state highways.

Road deaths over the longer term are trending downwards but April 2014 has bucked the trend with 31 deaths, the worst April since 2010 when 42 people died, and 14 more than in April last year. Last year New Zealand had a record low number of people killed in crashes. Mr Cliff said ‘‘Road safety is everyone’s responsibility. Drive as if your life depends on it because it does.’’

Minecraft Club a hit

Celebration of youth Youth Week is an opportunity for New Zealanders to celebrate and recognise the extraordinary contribution that young people make to our country.

The theme this year is “Be the Change”.

In the first four days of Youth Week at Te Takere, young people had the opportunity to produce a music video promoting Anti-Bullying Horowhenua using skills learned at workshops in music production, film production and makeup artistry.

The music video will have its premiere screening at Horowhenua’s Got Talent on Saturday.

The annual talent show in Te Takere is the finale to Youth Week. It provides young people with an opportunity to showcase their talent and skills to the community. There will be three guest judges, along with special appearances and performances throughout the night.

The competition is open to 12 to 24-year-olds. Entry is $5 and registration forms are available in the Youth Space and at Horowhenua District Council. You can also register on line at www.horowhenua.govt.nz. Applications close today.

New Zealand’s hip-hop scene was turned on its head when Christchurch’s Scribe burst on to the scene in 2003 with his debut single, Stand Up/Not Many. It shot to number one and stayed there for an impressive 12 weeks and became the first and only New Zealand artist to occupy the number one spot on both the singles and the album charts simultaneously.

It is probably the noisiest classroom in Horowhenua but there is a lot of learning going on in Te Takere’s education suite on Monday afternoons The Minecraft Club, started by customer service representative Millie Dewar, expanded from one to three separate sessions after more than 50 applications were received.

“I was stoked with the response,” she said, although it trebled her class load.

“I was absolutely terrified going into that first class, but the kids were great and they loved what they were doing.

“It was absolutely hectic and very noisy – 13 kids from eight to 11 years all yelling at me at the same time non-stop for an hour and a half.”

Her second class of the day is intermediate and college-aged who are less excitable and didn’t need her help to play the popular educational game.

The Wednesday night class is different again with a mix of all ages.

Millie didn’t know much about the game before it was suggested she could start the Minecraft Club, but she is now a fan.

“I had to play it for a week before the first club night, but some of the kids still know more than me,” she said.

“Minecraft is a great teaching tool. It can teach kids creative thinking, geometry and even a bit of geology without them realising they are learning,” she said.

Research shows they can also learn experimentation, teamwork and problem solving skills.

Minecraft is all about building. The main tasks in the game are to explore, mine, craft, build, farm and survive.

Players are dropped into a randomly generated world and can make tools and buildings out of raw materials.

While most games force players into a set path or set behaviours, Minecraft gives them an unprecedented level of creative freedom.

The award-winning game is a big teaching tool in the United States and it is starting to catch on with New Zealand children, though it isn’t yet played in schools.

The Te Takere Minecraft Club is taking names for a waiting list.

Polly delighted to be judging ‘heroes’ Radio personality Polly Gillespie (pictured) is glad to have the chance to recognise ordinary New Zealanders doing great things for their communities.

Gillespie has been named as a judge for the inaugural Pride of New Zealand Awards.

The radio host recently moved to The Hits station with husband Grant Kereama after more than 20 years as morning hosts at ZM. Gillespie’s involvement with the awards follows the announcement of Silver Fern Maria Tutaia as a judge.

Gillespie said it was important to recognise ordinary people whose work in the community usually went unnoticed. ‘‘So much of social media and the media is devoted to making fun of people.

So to actually talk about people who have the angel gene and who are doing good things out there, is great,’’ she said.

“When people see that positivity, it’s such a good thing – it’s uplifting. It makes people happy.”

The radio host grew up in Papatoetoe, in South Auckland, and Hamilton.

The kind of person she would nominate for a Pride award was someone who had put their own needs aside to help address another person’s needs.

“They would be the people who are for the kids -- people who are willing to take in kids from troubled homes and circumstances.

“Yes, you could adopt a cute baby or a young child, but people who take in kids who have had it tough – I’d nominate them. [Because] there’s really nothing in there for them, only that they’re giving these kids a home.”

There were many people in her life and in her local community who had shown that kind of selflessness, she said, including family friends and colleagues.

The Pride of New Zealand Awards is a joint venture with The Hits radio station and TSB Bank; supported by the Herald and APN regional newspapers.

There are six categories honouring bravery and heroism, community spirit, lifetime achievement, emergency services, top fundraisers and those making a difference for the environment.

Nominations are open until June 15.

Changes for Electra

By FRANKIE WEBB Changes are taking place at Electra.

Having outgrown its works depot in Prouse Street, a move took place into a spacious new premises in Coventry Street belonging to local councillor Wayne Bishop. ‘‘I’m pleased to have Electra as tenants and it’s great their needs can be met here in Levin,’’ Mr Bishop said at the official opening. ‘‘It’s good to see the trucks here under one roof,’’ Electra chief executive John Yeoman said. ‘‘The new building creates a very pleasant work environment for our staff, which is something Electra is very conscious of.’’

Mr Yeoman is leaving the Electra fold for far off shores. ‘‘My wife (Elizabeth) and I are heading off to trip around the United States for a few months,’’ he said. ‘‘Then on to a cruise in the Caribbean.’’

On his return, Mr Yeoman will take up a number of consultancy contracts. ‘‘I’m going to be what I would call

Time remains to apply for rates rebate Time is running out for lowincome homeowners in Horowhenua to apply for a rates rebate.

Ratepayers with a combined income of less than $23,870 may be eligible for a refund of up to $595 on rates paid last year.

Those earning over the income threshold may still qualify for a lower rebate, depending on their rates amount and number of dependants.

The income threshold is increased by $500 for each dependant in the household.

To date, for the 2013 to 2014 year, 1497 Horowhenua ratepayers have received rebates totaling $899,846 but Horowhenua District Council finance manager Doug Law said it was estimated about 3000 Horowhenua ratepayers may be eligible. ‘‘If you’re a super-annuitant, a Work and Income client, or a

family on a low income, we encourage you to enquire about your eligibility for a rates rebate. It’s a worthwhile opportunity to take advantage of,’’ he said. ‘‘The process is straightforward and Council staff can meet with you and help you complete your application to ensure it’s processed promptly and payments applied to your rates accounts.’’

The closing date for

applications is June 30.

Applicants will need proof of: - income (before tax) for the tax year ended March 31 2013.

Levin pupils enjoy day at the zoo

By TANYA WOOD A day out at Wellington Zoo proved a hugely exciting experience for all 125 Levin School students last month, as they got the chance to get up close and personal with some of the animals.

The school was split up into groups and some were lucky to see an animal being examined at The Nest Te Kohanga and later an autopsy on a capuchin monkey. The children also got the chance to get up close and personal with small animals in the zoo’s classroom and watch animals being fed in the large enclosures.

Levin School principal Colin Offord said it was a wonderful day. ‘‘The zoo has changed so much in the past years, and it was a terrific shared experience for the children.’’

He said the excitement came through on all the written, oral and maths exercises the children did afterwards, based on the trip. ‘‘For some children it was their first time in the capital city, which was just as exciting as their first visit to the zoo.’’

Mr Offord said parents had requested more school trips and to finance the Wellington Zoo visit, the school ran a ‘spellathon’, where each student was sponsored for each word they spelled correctly in a test, and received funding from pub charities.

Bowls prizegiving The annual Presentation Day was held at Levin Bowling Club on Saturday May 3.

Guest speaker Lesley Forward, Levin branch manager of BNZ, congratulated the club on its achievements over the season and presented the club’s trophies.

Bowls Kapiti Coast representative Warren Harding, of Waikanae Bowls Club, handed over trophies and certificates won by the club’s players at Centre level.

Over the season the club has made significant progress on a number of fronts.

The clubrooms have been extensively renovated with the help of generous grants from The Southern Trust, Infinity Foundation Limited, the Endeavour Community Foundation and the Eastern and Central Community Trust.

The greatest club event was its recognition with a Bowls New Zealand Clubcheck Gold award, the first club in the Horowhenua district to achieve this distinction. The award recognised the club’s operation as a successful sporting club operating year-round and which has, against the national and regional trend, seen a significant growth in membership.

Over the season Dianne Short and Diana McGill both represented the Centre at the senior level, with Dianne and Margaret Griffin also being Masters reps.

At the junior level Diana McGill, Julie Stichbury, Bella Law, Grahame Law, Jim Bagnall and Bill Clelland also became Centre reps. Dianna McGill had a particularly strong season, winning both the club’s junior and open singles titles and carrying on that form to win the Centre champion-of-champions junior singles.

The women’s triples team of Audrey Sciascia, Bronwyn McMahon and Margaret Mackay were narrowly beaten in the final of their champion-of-champions event, Bella Law was runnerup in the junior champion-of-champions singles

and Peter Brown was a finalist in the men’s novice singles.

At club level, the team of Neville Turnbull, Dianne Short, Hazel Rose and Ken Hayward were the winners of the Centre’s Seddon Shield mixed fours and Shoota Ballinger and Liz Galloway on the Godfrey Bowen mixed pairs. The women’s Reserve 7s team won their division of the national interclub, the men’s Division II Pennants team won their competition and club teams also came out winners of the Rotary trophy and the Takaro 9s.

The winners of the club’s major championship titles were as follows: Women: Open singles: Diana McGill Open pairs: Audrey Sciascia (s) and Bronwyn McMahon. Open triples: Audrey Sciascia (s), Bronwyn McMahon and Margaret Mackay. Open fours: Lodzia Wnek(s), Liz Galloway, Diana McGill and Mary Judd.

Junior singles: Diana McGill. First year singles: Ralda Adams.

Men: Open singles: Shoota Ballinger.

Open Pairs: Rob Cotter (s) and Jim Bagnall.

The club’s winter programme is already under way on the Dales Pro-Green Plus carpet green and it is expected that winter galas and roll-ups will once again be strongly supported.

Members of other clubs and casual bowlers are very welcome to participate in all winter galas and roll-ups.

At Queen’s Birthday weekend the club is holding its annual two-day Open Mixed Pairs event and later in June the Mixed Fours Championship will played, an event held over from the summer programme.

Caring for container plants in winter Digging in WALLY RICHARDS Winter can be a tough time for plants that grow in containers either outside or indoors, unless you take some special care of them.

Before we look at the problems these plants face, let us consider the difference between plants growing in the garden and the ones in containers.

Garden plants have nature to look after them, sunlight, rain and the soil provide for their basic needs.

It is only during times of low rainfall that you need to assist in keeping them alive with regular watering.

There are other functions that you provide such as preventing them from choking out each other with a bit of pruning, removal of competing plants (weeds), staking against damage from wind and providing extra nourishment.

By in large most of the time plants in the garden can fend for themselves with what nature and the weather provides.

When we take a plant and place it into a container, we become responsible for its well being.

Outdoor container mixes can dry out quickly during the summer and daily or even twice-daily watering may be needed.

During wet times we need to ensure that outdoor container plants have free drainage if they are rained on. This means removing any saucers and raising the containers off the ground with a couple of slats of wood.

Over the next few months, without rain, you are likely to be giving those containers an occasional light watering only, maybe once or twice a week.

Indoor plants are much more dependent on your care as they have a harder life because many of them are living in a space where there is no natural overhead light.

In most homes, light comes only through windows and the amount of light a plant receives will depend on the direction a window faces.

Windows facing north obtain the most direct light, while east and westfacing windows are likely to receive only half as much direct light in a day.

South-facing windows receive little if any direct light from the sun. These same rooms will be the coolest or coldest rooms in the house depending on the time of year.

A plant sitting in front of a window facing either west, north or east will receive good light in summer but only a fraction of that in winter.

If you have a sunscreen curtain across the window, you have reduced the amount of light the plant receives by half.

Move a plant a metre or more away

from a window then the amount of direct light drops off considerably.

You likely have seen plants stretching towards a window to gain more light, becoming ungainly and weak. The further away from the window, the less light there is, and it becomes reflected light off other surfaces.

There are many different types of house plants, each type having different requirements for the amount of light they receive.

A general rule of thumb is that plants with the largest leaves will survive better in lower light situations compared to smaller-leaf plants.

Most flowering plants require plenty of direct light to be able to produce buds and have those buds open.

If you have an indoor flowering plant and it either does not produce flower buds or the buds fail to open, falling off after forming, then the plant is telling you it needs more light.

In winter the light situation becomes even more critical for indoor plants. The hours of natural light are shorter as the sun is at a lower position in relation to the horizon.

Plants need light to grow and as the amount of light decreases so their growth slows or stops.

Indoor plants do receive a bit of extra light when we turn the light switch on after dusk.

If we are using power-saving bulbs, the type of light the plants receive is a little better suited to their requirements when compared to incandescent lights.

When indoor plants are receiving less light their needs for moisture greatly reduces.

This is a key point at this time of the year and one of the main causes of plants dying.

Wet potting mix in cool weather means root rots, which cause leaves to fall and likely an eventual loss of that plant.

You need to check every plant every few days and basically give them a little drink only when the foliage starts to droop through lack of moisture.

(Beware also that plants that are too wet will also have drooping foliage and to give them more water is likely to be fatal.)

Plant food is not needed for house plants at this time of the year unless they are flowering or still actively growing. Wait till the plants start showing signs of new growth in the spring before you start to feed again.

Avoid repotting into larger containers in winter as this also can cause wet feet till the roots once again fill the container.

By TANYA WOOD In their first win of the season, College Old Boys enjoyed a decisive 19-3 victory over fellow Levin club Athletic in the fourth game of the Senior Reserve Grade on Saturday at Playford Park.

After posting losses to Paraparaumu, Ngati Toa and Foxton, COB manager Dean Smith said it was good to get a win under their belt.

“We went out determined to apply the pressure from the start and kept it up throughout the game. We won our ball in the scrums and were able to contest the rucks and mauls really well. Athletic put up a good fight but we were just the stronger team on the day.”

COB openside flanker Ihaka Tukapua and second-five Sau Seu each scored a try and, while both conversions were missed, first-five Mario Horitepa made up the points by kicking three out of four penalties.

Smith said the team still had room for improvement in its lineouts, which he was confident would be sorted ahead of their game against Shannon this Saturday.

“We do have a major injury concern with Sam Mahuinga, our loosehead prop, who appears to have done the medial ligament in his knee. He’s a key player so I’m hoping he’ll be fit to play.”

The Saturday game would be played in front of COB ‘old timers’, past club players including some members of the senior champions team from 1964.

“We’re looking to step up our game to another level and post a victory, and do the old timers proud,” said Smith.
