Illustrations by Doug Curtis THE Pontiac division of General Motors began life in 1926 with a car created by Ben H. Anibal and named Pontiac after the Indian Chief. GM’s sales pitch called it “The Chief of the Sixes”, to match the newly-designed six-cylinder side valve engine of 3277cc. This engine was used in Pontiac cars until 1930. Sales of the new low-priced car were so successful that it eventually saw the demise of the General Motors Oakland car that had been the car priced between Chevrolet and Buick. The Pontiac cars that followed used parts from Chevrolet. Oldsmobile and Buick with body styling by Fisher similar to other GM cars, but with changes to grilles and chrome parts. Some Pontiac cars during the 1940-50 period had six cylinders and even the large straight eight side valve Oldsmobile engine fitted. Pontiac’s chief engineer and designer John De Lorean developed the Pontiac GTO I have drawn using a big block V8 of 400 cu in (6555cc) that developed 345bhp. This gave the car — with the relatively compact body of the Tempest Coupe — a top speed of 124mph (199kmh). The GTO option gave the car more responsive steering, firmer suspension, a twin exhaust system and wider tyres and was available for just $300 more than the

standard Pontiac Tempest model. Open daily 10am-4pm: The GTO stood for Gran Turismo East Coast Museum of Technology Omolagato, the same that Ferrari was Main Rd, Makaraka using in those days. The performance of the Pontiac GTO was 0-60mph (96kmh) in less than seven seconds — similar to the high-priced Ferrari. Owners of the GTO sports cars joked that it meant “Gas, Tyres and Oil’’ as the cars consumed these at an alarming rate. The rear body style of these coupes was known in America as “Coke Bottle” styling. The 1970 model car I have drawn had a massive 7457cc (455 cu in) V8 overhead valve engine giving 370bhp and a top speed of 130mph (209kmh) and a sprint time of 0-60mph in six seconds. The final versions of these cars used a new quad-style carburettor “Ram Air’’ system giving 400bhp. The front bumper was part of the body and made of deformable polyurethane — a first for GM cars. Sale of the Pontiac GTO Muscle cars dropped off in the 1970s but a total of • Warrant of Fitness • Bulk Buy Discounts 486,591 were made. • Motor Vehicle Registration • Road User Charges For those Kiwis who can afford to buy • Change Of Ownership • New Plates and run them, they seem to be available. • Driver Licensing • Home of the Gisborne AA Agency One is for sale on Trade Me at the moment with a price tag of $38,000.
