DIG THIS DUTCH SPEED DEMON
NO MISTAKE HERE - A PERFECT BLUE
TRITON - THE GREAT ALL-ROUND TACKLER
THE GISBORNE HERALD
Tough and tested Triton
A working ute that is just as comfortable on the open highway as up the back country by John Jones EASY on the eye and the pocket, a Mitsubishi GLS double-cab Triton could be the perfect way to say goodbye to 2011. The test vehicle available is the last of the Fielday’s specials from earlier this year which means it comes with some enticing extras such as leather seats and steering wheel, an electric front driver’s seat and an unbeatable price. The Triton won’t be lacking for company. Boasting a combination of toughness tempered with comfort it has become extremely popular with outdoor workers especially in the forest industry and with recreational 4-wheel-drive enthusiasts. That is mainly because of it’s off-road capabilities. The basis for that is Mitsubishi’s MATT (Mitsubishi All Terrain Technology). The 2.5-litre turbo diesel engine provides all the thrust you could need with 137kW of power and 407 Nm of torque, provided through a five speed manual transmission. As well as being at home in the back country, it is a smooth and comfortable operator on the open road. The large tray boasts a one-tonne carrying capacity and when fitted with a canopy or sport lid provides more than ample storage or room for the dogs. That is on top of interior seating for five large occupants, thanks to leg room which Mitsubishi says is class leading. Then there is the three-tonne braked towing capacity. And with driver, passenger and side airbags, active stability and traction control the Triton has an ANCAP safety rating of four to round off a pretty impressive CV. To keep the troops comfortable inside there is climate air conditioning and a CD player and accessory socket while the Tritons have cruise control.
The Triton offers all the attributes of a tough, working ute and it won’t break the bank, standing up well price-wise to the opposition. Mitsubishi’s 10/5 warranty and roadside assistance package ensures your Mitsubishi experience will be an enjoyable one. Say hello to 2012 in style with a newly-registered Triton ute.

AFTER two and a half years of development Donkervoort Automobielen in Lelystad — in close collaboration with Audi Quattro GmbH — recently presented the next generation of open sports cars — the Donkervoort GTO. It has a capacity of 253 to 298kW and torque of 450Nm from about 1600rpm, and all this for a total weight of only around 700kg. Without a doubt it is one of the fastest sports cars on the European market and, with the first private preview for Donkervoort Ambassadors from all over Europe, it was received so enthusiastically that within a few hours approximately half of the first 25 specially-designed GTOs were sold. The GTO is clearly a size larger than its predecessors — the closed GT and the open D8 270RS — and necessary to accommodate the massive, longitudinallyplaced, five-cylinder 253kW 2.5 TFSI Audi motor. The GTO is therefore a brand-new designed car. Sharing only five percent of its parts with the D8 270RS and about 30 percent with the much more

recent GT, it is a milestone in the 34-year history of Donkervoort. The first 25 specially-designed GTOs were also equipped with a 2.5 TFSI motor, which is 30kg lighter than the standard Audi variant. The dashboard in this design of the GTO is equipped with a special race module switch, which can increase the capacity from 253 to 298kW — at once. Connected to this is another Donkervoort novelty — the first car from Lelystad that has ‘traction control’ on board. Only for when it is raining of course! Production of the new car starts in 2012 and it is expected that the first specially-designed GTOs will be delivered in the summer. The first ‘regular’ versions are expected on European roads starting in 2013. The price of the new GTO is between 100,000 euros and 150,000 euros, excluding taxes. © 2009 NZ CLASSIC CAR

New hot Honda HONDA has confirmed that a new NSX sports car will be revealed at the Detroit motor show next month. Wearing the Acura badge of Honda’s United States luxury arm, the NSX Concept is said to “represent the styling direction of Acura’s super sports car”. The new two-seater coupe is likely to use the NSX badge in New Zealand and Australia when it arrives in 2013-14. The announcement confirms the resurrection of the second-generation NSX project, which was shelved in 2008 because of the global recession. Honda had developed various engine options for the Nissan GT-R rival, including a Formula One-style V10, but with the financial crisis squeezing the supercar market, Honda turned the road car into a racing version in 2009. The new NSX is set to use a 300kW V6 hybrid powertrain, with the petrol engine mounted in the middle and a pair of electric motors at the front, plus a development of Honda’s Super-HandlingAll-Wheel-Drive-System (SH-AWD). The look of the new car is expected to be influenced by a mysterious concept car
which will appear in the new Avengers movie. The revival of the NSX will be met positively as the original has developed a cult following. It went on sale in 1990 and was designed to beat the performance of the Ferrari 348 — its rival at the time — but also offer reliability and everyday usability. The NSX was the first production car to feature an all-aluminium monocoque body and suspension. The use of aluminium saved nearly 200kg over the steel equivalent. The car ran a high-revving 3-litre V6 — the world’s first production-car engine with titanium connecting rods and forged pistons — delivering about 200kW/304Nm. The NSX chassis was developed with the help of the late F1 great Ayrton Senna, who convinced engineers to stiffen the chassis. Honda will also show off the Acura ILX Concept at Detroit — a luxury small saloon which will launch next year in the US. This new entry-level model will have three engine choices, including a hybrid.

Illustrations by Doug Curtis THE Pontiac division of General Motors began life in 1926 with a car created by Ben H. Anibal and named Pontiac after the Indian Chief. GM’s sales pitch called it “The Chief of the Sixes”, to match the newly-designed six-cylinder side valve engine of 3277cc. This engine was used in Pontiac cars until 1930. Sales of the new low-priced car were so successful that it eventually saw the demise of the General Motors Oakland car that had been the car priced between Chevrolet and Buick. The Pontiac cars that followed used parts from Chevrolet. Oldsmobile and Buick with body styling by Fisher similar to other GM cars, but with changes to grilles and chrome parts. Some Pontiac cars during the 1940-50 period had six cylinders and even the large straight eight side valve Oldsmobile engine fitted. Pontiac’s chief engineer and designer John De Lorean developed the Pontiac GTO I have drawn using a big block V8 of 400 cu in (6555cc) that developed 345bhp. This gave the car — with the relatively compact body of the Tempest Coupe — a top speed of 124mph (199kmh). The GTO option gave the car more responsive steering, firmer suspension, a twin exhaust system and wider tyres and was available for just $300 more than the

standard Pontiac Tempest model. Open daily 10am-4pm: The GTO stood for Gran Turismo East Coast Museum of Technology Omolagato, the same that Ferrari was Main Rd, Makaraka using in those days. The performance of the Pontiac GTO was 0-60mph (96kmh) in less than seven seconds — similar to the high-priced Ferrari. Owners of the GTO sports cars joked that it meant “Gas, Tyres and Oil’’ as the cars consumed these at an alarming rate. The rear body style of these coupes was known in America as “Coke Bottle” styling. The 1970 model car I have drawn had a massive 7457cc (455 cu in) V8 overhead valve engine giving 370bhp and a top speed of 130mph (209kmh) and a sprint time of 0-60mph in six seconds. The final versions of these cars used a new quad-style carburettor “Ram Air’’ system giving 400bhp. The front bumper was part of the body and made of deformable polyurethane — a first for GM cars. Radisich keen to let it ‘hang out’ Holden Commodore.
Holden to end?
IT’S decision time for GM on whether to stick with production in Australia — Holden is expected to decide on its manufacturing future in Australia beyond 2018 in the next few days. The carmaker will either approve Australian development of its nextgeneration vehicles, or signal an end to the home-grown nameplate that has been around since 1948. Holden is already preparing the 2013 VF Commodore range, which will go through to 2017. But what will be made by the Australian arm of General Motors after that has not been decided. Holden chairman and managing director Mike Devereux said a decision on long-term production was imminent. He said Holden was talking to the Australian Government about incentive packages to enable it to compete with other countries for engineering, design and manufacturing work. “We need to have pretty solid conversations with the Government — and we’re having those, he said. “What is absolutely critical is long-term
policy certainty, clarity, consistency and competitiveness. The current level of Australian government assistance was below that of other carmaking countries and insufficient to secure the next round of investment in future models. “Government investment, or intervention, should not be a dirty word, said Devereux, who is also president of the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. Devereux has questioned the Federal Government’s decision this year to slash $1 billion in funding to the automotive industry — through the redirection of the Green Car Innovation Fund to Queensland’s flood relief — saying it threatened the long-term viability of local vehicle manufacturing. He said the unexpected changing of long-term plans sends a poor message to multinational companies such as General Motors, Ford and Toyota. Ford is also understood to be close to deciding its long-term manufacturing future in Australia. — NZ Herald
VETERAN Kiwi racing car driver Paul Radisich will be back on the grid in New Zealand for the first time since 2008 when he races a classic Ford Mustang at the New Zealand Festival of Motor Racing at Hampton Downs next month. Radisich, a two-time touring car World Cup champion now living in New Zealand for the first time in 25 years, has returned to become chief executive of the new V8 SuperTourer series. A serious crash at Bathurst in 2008 brought his international racing career to a halt and he has not raced on a regular basis since, but will climb behind the wheel in the last two weekends in January. He jumped at the chance to drive the famous Fleetwood Mustang when owner and friend Neil Tolich put the idea to him. “I have never competed or driven at Hampton Downs so I am looking forward
to that, he said. “All competitors have raved about the circuit so here is my chance to judge it for myself. “I’ve had experience with the Ford Galaxie in the UK and also a V8 Cyclone and a Lotus Cortina which Roger Wills and I competed with in Europe together, so you could say I have enough experience with the old cars on the grooved tyres. Radisich will race the car over both weekends of the event but isn’t aiming to break any V8 lap records. “It’s going to be a lot of fun and they’ll be fantastic back-to-back weekends of great motorsport. The key to me going fast in the Mustang will be seeing how far you can hang the car out in a power slide without losing it. That is the difference between modern and historic racing. I can enjoy some big power slides in the Mustang and it should help the times. — APNZ

AUCKLAND — Kiwi rally high-flyer Hayden Paddon will compete in the FIA Super 2000 World Rally Championship next year in a fully-backed Skoda Fabia 2000. The Geraldine driver and long-time co-driver John Kennard stunned the international rallying world this year with a near-faultless performance in the Production World Rally Championship. With three rounds up his sleeve, Paddon won the PWRC in his Subaru Impreza, becoming the only New Zealander to win a full international rally championship. The S2000 series is considered the feeder series to the main world championship. The Skoda will be run by Barcelonabased ASM Motorsport, and Paddon will move to Spain with his long-time partner Katie. “I am ecstatic about the move to Super 2000 — it’s a fantastic opportunity, Paddon said. “I was lucky enough to test the Skoda Fabia S2000 in Europe a couple of months ago and it was an incredible car

Skoda’s parent company Volkswagen has already confirmed its entry into the full WRC in 2013, which bodes well for Paddon, 24, who could potentially make the jump into the World Rally Championship and become the first Kiwi to have a full entry at the top end of rallying. “Several key personnel at ASM Motorsport have been involved with the Skoda and Seat world rally teams in the past and they are very enthusiastic and passionate about this project, Paddon said. “The target for the whole team is to win the championship. Paddon’s obvious goal is to win the SWRC title in 2012. SWRC competitors need to contest seven of eight selected World Rally Championship events. Paddon has elected to drive the S2000 Skoda in Rally Sweden, Rally Portugal, Rally New Zealand, Rally Finland, Wales Rally GB, Rally France and Rally Spain, dropping the year’s first SWRC event, Rally Monte Carlo. — APNZ

THEY do love their special colours at Holden and with every model or facelift comes at least one striking hue to mark the occasion. For the model year-2012 Commodore it is Perfect Blue — a colour the company says pays tribute to long-time Holden racing driver Peter Brock, who was killed while competing in the Targa West Rally in Australia in 2006. One of Brock’s most famous road cars, the Brock-tuned 1985 Holden Dealer Team (HDT) Group A VK SS, was finished in a lurid shade called Formula Blue. Holden has recreated it from an original paint sample, then infused it with metallic highlights. Photographs don’t do the new colour justice at all. It retains the flat appearance of the original 1985 colour but at close range or in very bright conditions the metallic highlights become visible. A special paint job, but not special enough to be limited to Commodore as it’s also being used to boost buyer interest in the new Cruze
range. At least the Perfect Blue name gives you some clue as to what it looks like. Carry-over colours in the Commodore range include Hazard, Mirage Glow, Sizzle, Karma and Nitrate. There’s another new colour, which is called Chlorophyll. Visual changes to the $57,890 SV6 sportwagon are limited to extra chrome highlighting on the grille and lower air intake. So the Commodore is essentially still the Series II model launched last year. It’s also still a very good thing. Commodore is still the No. 3 car in the Kiwi passenger vehicle charts and continues to deliver on style, performance and driving dynamics. Holden is changing, with more emphasis on small cars like Cruze (now built in Australia) and high technology such as electric cars, but the big fella hasn’t been forgotten. It is still the most important model for its Australian design and manufacturing operations and the company is committed to building a new version in 2013.
