FRIDAY November 21 2014 Issue 1087
New green for new season Local sweat, English carpet and Australian expertise has resulted in a brand new artificial green at Maraetai Bowling Club. Club members, assisted by local trades people and members of the community, recently rolled up the old green. Experts from Australian based company, Berry Bowling Systems, then prepared the sub surface, laid an undercarpet, and then the state-of-the-art Needlepunch surface carpet imported directly from England. The club celebrated the opening of the new green with a lunch last Sunday attended by visitors from other clubs, sponsors, charitable trusts who provided some of the funding and other invited guests. Like all carpets, this one will need to be vacuumed frequently. The carpet comes with a seven year guarantee on the condition a maintenance schedule is kept to. This involves vacuuming it once a month then twice a year it is shampooed. An industrial vacuum cleaner has been provided and a small brush cleaner. Social bowls is now underway every Friday from 6pm. This is the opportunity for anyone to come along and have a go at the game – on a brand new surface. Bowls will be provided along with some coaching. It will continue through to the end of daylight savings (except for two weeks over Christmas). President Derek McKeen says the club will now be looking to the future. “The people in charge of the club over last 50 years put money away for a contingency fund which built up over the years,” says Derek. “When we started this 20 months ago we knew we had $35-40,000 built up over years. Now we are looking to start a contingency fund again so 15-20 years from now there will be some money available. [for the next green]” The official opening of the Maraetai Bowling Club’s new season was held last Sunday afternoon. The event was attended by 50 people including life members, honorary members, the MP for Hunua (Andrew Bayly), the president of Auckland Bowls (Peter McKechnie), the chairman of Franklin Local Board (Andy Baker) and the three Wairoa representatives (Malcolm Bell, Angela Fulljames and Lynn Murphy) along with representatives from Howick, Bucklands Beach, Pakuranga, Hunters Corner and Clevedon Bowling Clubs. Derek McKeen declared the new green open and rolled the first jack while Secretary/Treasurer Bryan Tutty had the honour of rolling the first bowl. Visitors, including Andrew Bayly, and members then played two short games on the new green.
