It’s snowing at Clevedon Kidz!

BEACHLANDS MARAETAI MEN’S SOCCER TEAM THROUGH TO FINAL OF COUNTIES MANUKAU KNOCKOUT CUP SEE REPORT PAGE 3

Clevedon Kidz Early Childhood Centres celebrated the start of Spring with a ‘Snow Day” on Monday. All the children came dressed in their winter hats, coats and gloves and the eagerly anticipated giant pile of snow was delivered at 10am. Then it was time for the fun to begin as the children climbed on the snow, touched the snow, went sliding on the snow, lay down in the snow and some even tasted the snow! There were snowballs to make and throw and a snowman to build. The songs from Frozen were ringing through the centre enhancing the Snow Day theme and creating an atmosphere of enchantment especially for the children who had not experienced snow before. The snow lasted all day and the children enjoyed the incredible fun experience of snow at preschool.

Jolly sad end for marina pub The iconic Jolly Roger Pub at Pine Harbour has been forced to close leaving proprietor Jacky Lakin “heart broken”. Jacky put the pub into voluntary liquidation on August 25 to try to resolve ongoing differences with a business partner. “I thought it would be the way to finalise things,” says Jacky. “I asked the liquidators if I could trade through so that the Jolly Roger could stay open.” With their permission Jacky set up a new company to carry on trading and purchased the pub’s food and beverages.

But eight days later Jacky was notified that the pub’s month by month lease would not be renewed by landlord Pine Harbour Holdings Ltd. “They gave us 20 days to vacate,” says Jacky. “I’m devastated - I’ve put everything into the pub and it’s all been taken away from me.” A tearful Jacky says she has been overwhelmed by supportive emails and phone calls from wellwishers. “People can’t believe it’s not going to be here anymore,” she says. “I’d just like to thank everyone for all their support and particularly in the

last week for all their kind words and thank everyone who’s worked for me over the past six year.” The pub closure means the loss of 23 part-time and four fulltime positions. Jacky says the Jolly Roger has provided jobs for close to 200 people, mostly locals, since it opened. A final farewell was held at the Jolly, as the pub was affectionately known, last Saturday. “We had hundreds of people down here - so many of the people who were here for our opening day six years ago came back for our last day,”

says Jacky. The traditional English style pub opened on 1 August 2008, the dream enterprise of Jacky and her then husband Steve. They spent months planning and designing the pub’s layout and bought in furniture from England. During the preceding year Jacky collected Steins and other nic-nacs to give the pub its authentic ambience. Sadly, the couple split at the beginning of 2012 and Steve has since returned to England. Jacky says the pub had become a focal point in the area. “I think it (our closure)

will be a shock for a lot of people for a long time. “As well as our local regulars we had a lot of boaties from further afield who came in at the weekends.” Jacky says she will miss hosting regular events, such as the popular Tuesday night quiz and open mike nights as well as annual charity events. “We did a lot of charity work with our Breast Cancer events and Canteen Fishing day every year. “We also had a lot of Gold Card senior citizens’ groups who would come out for lunch.” • TO PAGE 2

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (September 12th 2014)

Time to take electorate candidates seriously? THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz Job done – all seven Hunua election candidates now interviewed as promised a couple of weeks ago. The final three appear in this issue of the PC Times. It’s been an interesting exercise and one that has taken me to the suburbs of Pukekohe and inside the incredible security cordon of the Wiri Oil Services depot. I’ve also struggled to find parking in Carbine Rd, and drank several litres of coffee at local cafes. But, somewhat to my surprise, it’s been fun. Everyone I interviewed was worth listening to. Some of the minor party candidates seemed to genuinely appreciate someone taking notice of them and commented that the media seem to be focusing only on the main party candidates. I’m a bit old fashioned and believe that to do justice to democracy every candidate has to be treated the same – which means either ignoring them all, or talking to them all. None of this will alter the outcome. National’s Andrew Bayly will win Hunua and probably by a handsome margin. That’s fine by me. He seems an intelligent and capable person determined to make a difference. Already he has

managed to get developers and residents association reps talking to each other in the same room – and he hasn’t even been elected yet. I was also very impressed by Labour’s Arena Williams – an articulate young woman who showed at the Beachlands candidate meeting that she may have a better grasp of Labour policy than her leader! For the first time since Ross Robertson’s term as our local MP, Labour seems to be taking this electorate seriously. New Zealand First’s Jon Reeves is also a breath of fresh air with a good background in local transport issues, a subject dear to our heart. Act’s Ian Cummings and Democrat-Social Credit’s Huia Mitchell are the idealists – candidates who are “big picture” people keen to talk about the underlying vision of their respective parties. Vision is a quality sadly lacking so far in the leaders’ debates. Conservative candidate Neville Hudson is a small town man (Pokeno) who has first hand experience of coping with rapid urban development of a small rural community – all of which sounds very useful to us. You probably won’t see much of the Maori Party’s Tom Phillips as he doesn’t have the resources to campaign in our part of the electorate. Yet I spent a delightful half hour with he and wife Sharron and he gave me a fascinating insight into politics from a Maori perspective.

If you love basketball there may soon be a training squad for youngsters at Te Puru. Beachlands’ Fred Nolan, whose two sons are basketball enthusiasts, is keen to guage interest for setting up basketball training on the Coast. He says basketball is a rapidly growing sport within New Zealand, supported by the success of the Tall Blacks and the popularity of the NBL games with teams such as the Sky City Breakers providing exciting sporting events for all ages. “In the face of the growing popularity of basketball, it’s a great shame that we are under-utilising the excellent facilities available at Te Puru,” says Fred Nolan. “Te Puru management is of the same opinion, and would dearly love to see more use made of their facilities.” With the end of the school-based winter basketball season fast approaching, Fred is looking to organise a children’s training squad for the Spring and Summer, and is actively seeking interest from parents. “Basketball is such a great sport for keeping kids active and fit,” says Fred, who himself played basketball at school. “Aside from the Te Puru facilities, there are outdoor courts in most communities including Beachlands, and there is a rapidly growing popularity of ‘street ball’ which only requires one hoop. “It’s very cheap to put up a basketball hoop above your garage door and offer your children sporting fun any time of the day.” Anyone with intermediate or seniorREAD school children ONLINE who are keen on basketball, can register their interest. Training session times are yet www.pctimes.co.nz to be confirmed, but (updated every Thursday) will most likely be on one weekday evening, with Also visit our facebook page possibly an optional session on Sundays. - Pohutukawa Coast Times Please contact Fred either via email fredandrebecca@hotmail.com or call 027 775 5320 to register your interest. The only serious no-show is the Green Party. Frankly, I find it staggering that a party hoping to get 15% of the vote nationwide can’t find someone to stand in Hunua. This is an electorate with huge tensions between urban and rural and with any number of environmental issues arising from that. I would have thought it fertile ground for a strong Green showing. In the battle for the election-winning party vote, we tend to overlook the importance of electorate MPs. My own travels over the past fortnight shows there are some very capable people willing to do the job. Of the seven I interviewed, there are four who I believe would do a very good job as our local MP. After all, it doesn’t stop me giving my party vote to the party I want to govern the nation. We’ve had the MMP system of voting for quite some time now, yet I don’t believe we have really woken up to its true potential. Having two votes opens up all sorts of interesting possibilities. Any candidate – even an independent – could potentially represent an electorate New Zealand has yet to see a one-issue candidate win a seat and it has yet to see a candidate with no party affiliations at all represent an electorate. A pity, because Parliament desperately needs the vibrant mix of ideals and ideas that MMP promised us but hasn’t yet really delivered.

LETTER TO EDITOR:

Plenty of seawalls in Hawaii And so the saga of the Maraetai foreshore continues, as does a deaf and blind council. Critics of Len Lavas, our very own resident stone wall building specialist, need to visit the imperilled land in question before they comment. My wife Dulcie and I have just returned from a cruise around the Hawaiian Islands where solid stone walls on seafronts are commonplace as a preventative measure against the relentless pounding of the Pacific Ocean. They work famously well. Proponents against Len Lavas’ expertise and well meaning intentions to remedy this appalling situation should take note that much of the land between the helipad and the wharf at Maraetai is now less than half a metre from the council imposed concrete walkway which has clearly exacerbated erosion of this fragile zone. Council, despite various warnings and advice, still fail to understand and accept that concrete does not absorb run off water whereas vegetation does. Unless council engineers take heed

Geoff and Dulcie Bignell sitting on a seawall in Hawaii. of the damage they have helped cause since the placement of the walkway now the walkway itself will fall victim to erosion. It is somewhat ironic that in fact the hard surfaces of concrete and stone are the only secure option left in many areas of the foreshore to halt further damage. There truly is not a week, not a moment to spare. The walkway will disappear. Put these words on record – readers will see in very short order they are real. GEOFF BIGNELL Maraetai

TREAT YOURSELF! The annual Beachlands v Maraetai Battle of the Bridge rugby match was a high scoring affair last Saturday at Te Puru Park. After holding a slender 32-28 half time lead, Beachlands ran away with the game in the second half winning 61-45. Maraetai can take some satisfaction for at least closing the gap following last season’s 10-95 rout. There was a bit of controversy surrounding this year’s format, which was more Golden Oldies rules.

Beachlands-Maraetai senior men’s soccer team is through to the Counties Manukau Cup knockout final. BMAFC defeated Otahuhu United 2-1 in a dramatic semi-final showdown at Te Puru Park on Sunday. The home team was 2-0 up within 20 minutes with goals from Mark Giles in just over five, and Rory Gray doubling the score line less than 15 minutes later. However, the comfortable lead was short lived as Otahuhu claimed one back just three minutes soon after. Despite the attempted comeback, the visitors only gave BMAFC keeper Oswaldo Rodriguez

Soccer celebrates 30 years This month Beachlands-Maraetai AFC Soccer Club will be marking its 30th anniversary with a huge celebration. Brian Preston, club president, is inviting supporters, players, parents and anyone – past or present – associated with the club to bring their glitz and glamour to the party night. Kiwi comedian Ewen Gilmour will MC the evening so there is sure to be lots of laughs. The festivities commemorating the last three decades will include prize giving ‘Oscar’ awards, followed by BMAFC going back to the 1980s, dancing the night away to some old classics. Dinner is included and there is a door prize worth $3000 for some lucky winner. Contact team coaches or Brian Preston for tickets by emailing president@bmafc.co.nz, or calling 021 353 962. Tickets cost $30 single or $55 for couples. Strictly 18+.

Digital notices on way Beachlands looks set to have a digital community noticeboard before Christmas. The Beachlands Community Trust has been allocated funds from council for the project which would see the existing noticeboard beside the post office superceded with a new electronic version in the window of the Beachlands Police Station. “A good notice board really engages the community,” says trust manager Jenny Carter. “It’s a great way to promote activities and community events as well as for people to list their ads and notices.” “It could also be an active focal point for people to get real time info such as if a road were closed due to an accident.” Beachlands computer systems engineer Andrew Sparrow will spearhead the project. Andrew envisages a large TV screen with scrolling information which could then be interactive as well. He says people could send in their notices online or drop them off at a designated point in Beachlands. He is keen to hear from locals with feedback and ideas for the new noticeboard. Call Andrew on 536-6514 or email him on: andy@whatwhywhen.com

6 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (September 12th 2014)

Ag Day season is here!

The cast of Pyramidiots includes (from left) Alana Burton, Hamish Haitana, Keagan Dagg, Caitlin Brown, Sophie O’Sullivan and - in front- Liam Mulligan. Good news...it’s nearly Agricultural Day season, which means Spring is here! Brookby School students (above) Tony Arthur ,with Peewee the lamb, and Charlie Alcock, with Norman the kid goat, cuddle their animals during a break in school time. Each Brookby student is raising either a calf, lamb, kid goat or chicken in preparation for Ag Day at the school on Sunday September 21. The children can take animals that need a midday feed to school and leave them in an outdoor animal “creche” where they will be safe. On the big day all animals will be judged on their care and condition. Calves and lambs will be judged while being led around a ring, calves will also be led around a calf leading course. Lambs and kid goats will also be judged for “calling.” This involves children at one end of

the ring calling their animals to come to them once released. The winning lamb or kid will dash straight to its owner — hopefully! Chickens will be judged on how comfortably they perch on their owner’s arm, or any other part of the body. Each school class will also complete a project about their animal and take part in a flowers show at the school on Friday September 19. And, as always, there will be heaps of fun for parents and the public on Ag Day itself with a bbq, auctions, cakes/jams/plants/sweets, a cafe, raffles, a bouncy castle, spin the wheel and white elephant. New features this year include helicopter rides, a “man cave” and “chick’s corner.” The day runs from 10am to 2pm.

School play set in Ancient Egypt Ancient Egypt is the setting for this year’s Beachlands School production, featuring the intermediate school team. “Pyramidiots” is written by - you guessed it - prolific Beachlands playwrite Elliot Tremlett. Director is Imogen Kennedy, music is by Justine Jones and choreography by Kylie Biggs. The plot sees three children sight seeing in ancient Egypt, only to end up accidentally going back in time and getting embroiled in the middle of an assassination plot. There is a cast of 50, including dancers, with every child in the intermediate school being involved in the production - whether on stage, or doing props, event management etc. This year ‘scenery’ will be courtesy of new projector equipment purchased by the Beachlands Baptist church. Ancient Egypt will be projected onto a screen behind the actors. The production is being staged at the Beachlands Baptist Church, Third View Ave, at 7pm on September 23, 24 and 25. Tickets are available from the school.

Maraetai - For Sale: $749,000 “Peaceful” is a word that comes up a lot when talking to John McMillan about the home he and wife Shirley have enjoyed for the past 10 years. John and Shirley have lived in Maraetai since 1982 but are now moving to a retirement village in Hamilton to be near family, which means their beautiful brick & tile Signature home in Swordfish Place is now looking for a new owner. The couple moved to Swordfish Place from the noisy beachfront to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of one of Maraetai’s most appealing subdivisions . “We wanted somewhere quieter, easy care and single storey with room for Shirley’s collectibles and bits and pieces,” says John. Quiet it certainly is. While parked on the side of the road before going inside to meet John, two tuis were playing in a roadside tree while - almost on cue - a wood pigeon lumbered its way overhead. If you enjoy the sound of tuis in the garden, then in the private garden out back is the most spectacular kaka beak tree I’ve seen which, says John, is a tui magnet when it’s flowering. In fact, the back of the property is it’s big selling point. Good inside-outside flow leads out on to wooden decks and terraced back gardens with shell and gravel bricklined paths. It’s all completely maintenance free. The immediate deck area is enclosed with a canopy and fold-down sides making for winter and summer outdoor living. Apparently, there was enough room to cram in

some 50 people for John’s 80th birthday party! “Out back is our favourite area. It’s easy to maintain and very sunny and well protected from the wind,” says John. In fact, the area is well protected from everything providing complete privacy with some lovely mature palms, yuccas and a variety of shrubs and trees. Down one side of the house is a utility area and a fish cleaning area. John is a keen fisherman and until recently stored his 7.2 metre boat on the property. The house itself is at the top of a wide concrete driveway leading into a two car garage with work bench and storage at the back. Then front door leads through into a small entranceway . On the left is a small bedroom currently used as an office. To the front is a formal living area with outside access. From there a small passage leads to the master bedroom, also with its own outside access, and ensuite. The other side of the living area leads into a hallway with two more bedrooms and a bathroom at the end. In front is the informal living area and open plan modern kitchen It’s an unusual interior design that adds character to the place that’s been a much loved home for John and Shirley. Now it can be yours to love. ~ Duncan Pardon

8 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (September 12th 2014)

Over the next two issues of the PC Times, editor Duncan Pardon interviews candidates standing for election in the Hunua electorate....

Giving Maori a voice in government

Maori Party candidate Tom Phillips is standing in the Hunua electorate to help get Susan Cullen elected in the Maori electorate of Hauraki Waikato. It’s all part of the sort of grand strategy that is now possible under the MMP system of electing governments. “My definition of success will be to help get Susan elected by raising her profile from Hunua,” says Tom. It’s the second time Tom has stood in Hunua. He says one advantage of standing in a general electorate is that it brings the Maori Party further up the list of parties on the ballot paper. “I’m happy to put my name down to support the fact that as a party we have been part of good, solid government – and that’s not a bad thing to have on your cv!” Tom has lived most of his life in Pukekohe. He is married to Sharron and the couple have a 14 year old daughter. He has worked around Auckland but lost his last job about five years ago. Since then he has been concentrating on his role as Minister for the Ratana Church in Pukekohe. This, in turn, has led him into other community work that includes being chairman of the Pukekohe North School Board of Trustees, chairman of the local marae committee, and Maori Party chairman for the Hauraki Waikato electorate. He was a Labour Party supporter but left at the same time at Matt Rata. “He was the first to send out the signal that Labour wasn’t doing it for us. And that’s a long time ago now,” says Tom.

Hunua Maori Party candidateTom Phillips. For Tom and others, being outside of the two party system gave new perspective and the realisation that it was much better to be seated around the table than to be on the outside looking in. His interest in the Maori Party came when the party became part of the first John Key government. “Not only did Maori have a voice in Parliament but we also had a seat next to the guy with the key to the bank. We’d never had that before.” He believes the National Party has also benefitted greatly from the relationship “The valedictory speeches from National members for Pita and Tariana had heartfelt thanks, especially Bill English who appreciated that the system of government was starting to change because of the Maori Party. “Previous National Governments been busy running the country but didn’t have much of a social conscience. That’s what we were able to provide. “We gave them a softer edge. If we can do that to

them, we can do it to the whole system.” Maori need their own voice in government, says Tom. “We need a voice that speaks for us. The Conservatives say we should be one voice, but if that happens Maori get pushed to the bottom. “Maori people, when you put them in a group of others, get shoved to the bottom. “We need a voice that’s there to nudge the Government and make sure they look after people who are on the bottom line. “If you raise the bottom line, it raises everybody. I’m standing in Hunua to accentuate that.” The Maori Party has managed to help bring about significant policies, says Tom. “One of the biggest things is free doctors visits for children under 13. I’m chairman of a Decile One school. This means all of my kids can now go to the doctor. That’s a massive deal.” Equality in education is also important for Tom. “At one end of the Hunua electorate you have Ormiston College while we are at the other end. There’s a great gulf between the two, not just in geography but culturally and economically. “It’s not right because you will always end up with disparity.” To help reduce that disparity between rich and poor schools the Maori Party has a comprehensive education policy that includes increasing access to kohanga reo and universal early childhood education by increasing 20 free hours to 30 free hours; free afterschool care for children at primary school level up to 10 hours per week; ensuring Maori histories will be a compulsory component of the curriculum; civics education as a compulsory area of learning, including the importance of Te Tiriti o Waitangi; promoting the concept of self-managing schools which focus on whanau achievement and success. How many of those policies become reality will depend on the hard work of Maori Party parliamentarians. Tom Phillips is doing his best to ensure there will be plenty of them – even though he won’t be one of them.

– the facility owned by the four major oil companies that supplies fuel to all of Auckland and the airport. It is the culmination of a career in the oil industry, having started as a fitter and turner on leaving school at age 15. He then went to work at Marsden Point. His father was a watersider and Ian was brought up to be an ardent socialist. The union and socialist mindset were very much entrenched. But when Ian became a Christian in his 20s he started seeing life differently and particularly “the uglier side of unionism”. On returning to Auckland he got a job in the dockyards.

“It was bad enough at Marsden, but here I was just told to look busy. It’s hard to look busy for 12 hours a day. “I experienced the public sector and people sleeping in corners. The waste was amazing.” His oil industry career started when he applied for a casual job with Shell. After just one day on the job he was invited to become maintenance foreman and from there never looked back. He also did a BA at Auckland University, taking an interest in philosophy, history and sociology. He started thinking about the big issues of life. Although Ian tended to associate with National Party people and became a member of the Young Nats, he felt the party was “very tribal” and he sought a more purist view. He found it when Roger Douglas wrote Unfinished Business and the

Hunua Act Party candidate Ian Cummings. Association of Consumers & Taxpayers was formed, evolving into the Act Party. Ian got involved around 1994. He describes himself as a “Christian Libertarian.” Ian told Act he’d like to campaign in South Auckland because that’s where his roots were.

Although hardly fertile territory for Act, Ian believed that – like fellow South Aucklander Roger Douglas – he wasn’t wasting his time there. Last election he was number 22 on the Act Party list. “This time I told the board I wanted to be in the top 10. I told them I • TO PAGE 9

Monetary policy still the key

Remember Social Credit? Back in the late 1970s and early 1980s, Social Credit was the rising force in New Zealand politics. At its core was a radical economic policy based on the postwar views of Scottish engineer Clifford Douglas. The party is not the force it once was, but is still alive and kicking with 30 candidates across the country – now known as Democrats for Social Credit. Its Hunua candidate is long time Hunua hills resident Huia Mitchell, aged 78. This is her third time as a candidate. She also contested Hunua in 2011 and was an Alliance candidate in the 1990s. “I’m not the oldest candidate in the election. I’m told there is someone who is 81!,” says Huia. “I am young at heart. Provided I have my marbles and provided I can get my message across, I will carry on.” Campaigning is always difficult for minor party candidates who lack the profile and resources of the bigger parties. Huia is also still dealing with the burden of grief. It is

only a month since her husband of 55 years, Phil, passed away. The couple moved to Hunua’s Moumoukai Valley in 1959 into a house that went with Phil’s job. He was county engineer for Franklin for 30 years and also worked for Watercare. The couple couldn’t afford to pay a big rent or carry a mortgage, so they built their own home. It took 12 years and Huia was very much involved, having also helped build her parents’ house. “I’ve always been handy...although I did cut my finger back in May when a circular saw kicked back on me!,” says Huia. “A lot of people told me to let a man do it, but he would be just as likely to have an accident. Phil lost the tip of his finger and my father lost one and a half fingers.” Huia has no desire to be an MP and is standing in Hunua for one simple reason: “to get the message across.” She inherited her interest in Social Credit from her father. “Dad became interested during the Great

Depression and spoke about it for the rest of his life. I listened to him talking to people about it and it always made sense to me.” Huia has attended a couple of Meet the Candidates meetings in the campaign and is encouraged by the support. “At a couple of meetings I’ve been to some people have applauded some of the things I’m saying. They seem to be waking up at last. “If one of the other parties would take on our monetary policy I would applaud.” So what is that policy? At the core of the Democrats for Social Credit monetary policy would be a sovereign Reserve Bank Monetary Authority (RBMA) that can provide and manage money as a public utility; for the economic, social and environmental benefit of New Zealand and its people. The RBMA would employ the tool of money creation, which may be lent into the economy interest-free or spent debt-free. It would be the responsibility of the RBMA to determine the proportion of each, according to the needs of the country each year. All monies provided by the RBMA could carry an administrative charge, to cover overheads. A progressively in-

bring diversity, a Christian world view and am very keen on social policy. To their credit they put me at number nine.” Ian says his aim is to get the voters of Hunua to look at the bigger picture. “I want to ask people: what is the role of the State? We Christians know the State can be a dangerous entity. “Government is not just Wellington. It’s also family, church, civic government – each has a place. One shouldn’t be serving the others. “The State is our protector, not our provider.” Ian says Act has got a “heartless rich man’s image” but the the party is just as concerned about social welfare as the Greens. Touch rugby coming soon Now that the winter codes are coming to a close it is time to start thinking about the upcoming touch rugby season. The first competition night is only eight weeks away with the normal jostling of teams and players starting already. The 2014-2015 season again will be busy with at least 80 teams including over 900 players expected to play every Wednesday night. Says club chairman Simon Williamson: “Again we will have a focus on developing and improving our referees, and developing those players who wish to trial for the Counties Manukau Touch Association representative teams. “Courses, training and opportunities for those players, referees and coaches who are keen will be available through the club.” The first night of competition is on October 29, going through to December 10. After the Christmas break, play will resume on January 28 with finals day being held on Saturday February 28. Registrations this year will be online through the website and will be open until September 27. Other changes include the compulsory wearing of appropriate footwear for all grades and the introduction of an Open Social grade where the scores will not be recorded.
