Artist’s work selected for NZ Art Show
Maraetai artist Helen Blair flew to Wellington this week for the gala opening of the prestigious annual New Zealand Art Show where four of her original oil paintings are being exhibited. Helen, who has been painting for more than 20 years, was thrilled to learn her artwork had been selected for the exhibition - the largest curated art show and sale of its kind in New Zealand. Each of her entries took about a week to complete from initial brushstroke to the last dab of her palette knife. One piece depicts the subtle beauty of a bed of echinacea flowers while three refelect the grandeur of New Zealand’s mountainous landscapes. They will feature among 3000 original works by 300 artists from around the country. Passionate about colour and nature, Helen’s prefered medium is oils. “I like the colours in oils because they are more rich and I like how I can blend those colours and get more texture. I find acrylics a flatter medium.” Helen’s flair for art started at an early age. “I loved to draw when I was a child and at school art was the subject I did really well in,” says Helen. “After I started having a family I needed an outlet and discovered a lady near where we then lived in the country who taught art.” From there it is has been a colourful learning curve perfecting her own artistic style. Helen’s subjects are taken from nature - usually landscapes, seascapes or flowers. “I love the freedom to choose what I’m going to paint and I tend to go with the seasons,” she explains. “Usually if it’s spring, I feel like flowers; in summer because we live near the beach it can be a lot of seascapes or mountain scenes if we’ve

Seawall or sand dunes? What is the best method for protecting our beaches and roads from storms...
At Omana and Kawakawa Bay each storm sees more of the foreshore erode away. One Bay local said the Kawakawa Bay foreshore had been eroding at the rate of about 10 metres every decade since the 1950s. Franklin Local Board member Malcolm Bell says Auckland Council has acknowledged that expert input is required on how to fix the problems. He says consultants Tonkin & Taylor, who built the wooden seawall, have been asked to do an engineering assessment and propose some design changes. It was due to present some options to the council this week. He also says consultants are looking at improving the structure of the wharf and work on this is expected to start • TO PAGE 3 in August. Hard or soft? Sea walls or sand dunes? That’s the debate that has reignited locally following the recent storm damage and erosion along the foreshore from Omana to Kawakawa Bay. It is clear that the wooden seawall along the Maraetai beachfront isn’t working. The recent big storm saw the foreshore immediately behind the seawall washed away leaving several large holes. Signs and seats collapsed with it. Several litter bins are hanging precariously and the wooden boardwalk near the wharf has been undermined. The wharf itself has been badly damaged and the foreshore in front of the concrete walkway at the front of Maraetai Park is crumbling away.
