Artist’s work selected for NZ Art Show

Maraetai artist Helen Blair flew to Wellington this week for the gala opening of the prestigious annual New Zealand Art Show where four of her original oil paintings are being exhibited. Helen, who has been painting for more than 20 years, was thrilled to learn her artwork had been selected for the exhibition - the largest curated art show and sale of its kind in New Zealand. Each of her entries took about a week to complete from initial brushstroke to the last dab of her palette knife. One piece depicts the subtle beauty of a bed of echinacea flowers while three refelect the grandeur of New Zealand’s mountainous landscapes. They will feature among 3000 original works by 300 artists from around the country. Passionate about colour and nature, Helen’s prefered medium is oils. “I like the colours in oils because they are more rich and I like how I can blend those colours and get more texture. I find acrylics a flatter medium.” Helen’s flair for art started at an early age. “I loved to draw when I was a child and at school art was the subject I did really well in,” says Helen. “After I started having a family I needed an outlet and discovered a lady near where we then lived in the country who taught art.” From there it is has been a colourful learning curve perfecting her own artistic style. Helen’s subjects are taken from nature - usually landscapes, seascapes or flowers. “I love the freedom to choose what I’m going to paint and I tend to go with the seasons,” she explains. “Usually if it’s spring, I feel like flowers; in summer because we live near the beach it can be a lot of seascapes or mountain scenes if we’ve

Seawall or sand dunes? What is the best method for protecting our beaches and roads from storms...

At Omana and Kawakawa Bay each storm sees more of the foreshore erode away. One Bay local said the Kawakawa Bay foreshore had been eroding at the rate of about 10 metres every decade since the 1950s. Franklin Local Board member Malcolm Bell says Auckland Council has acknowledged that expert input is required on how to fix the problems. He says consultants Tonkin & Taylor, who built the wooden seawall, have been asked to do an engineering assessment and propose some design changes. It was due to present some options to the council this week. He also says consultants are looking at improving the structure of the wharf and work on this is expected to start • TO PAGE 3 in August. Hard or soft? Sea walls or sand dunes? That’s the debate that has reignited locally following the recent storm damage and erosion along the foreshore from Omana to Kawakawa Bay. It is clear that the wooden seawall along the Maraetai beachfront isn’t working. The recent big storm saw the foreshore immediately behind the seawall washed away leaving several large holes. Signs and seats collapsed with it. Several litter bins are hanging precariously and the wooden boardwalk near the wharf has been undermined. The wharf itself has been badly damaged and the foreshore in front of the concrete walkway at the front of Maraetai Park is crumbling away.

2 POHUTUKAWA COAST TIMES (July 25th 2014)

How to stop Mother Nature? THE EDITOR SAYS BY DUNCAN PARDON duncan@pctimes.co.nz Most of the time the Coast is a beautiful place to live next to. But on occasions it can be a real pain – such as when a storm hits. And so the debate continues in the wake of the storm a couple of weeks ago. Just how do we protect ourselves from the worst Mother Nature has to offer? The answer, of course, is that if Mother Nature is determined to do her worst, then there is not a lot we can do except pick up the pieces afterwards. But we do need to do as much as we can to protect our roads, our properties and our beaches, otherwise we risk losing them altogether. So apologies if the article in today’s PC Times is a bit long winded, but I believe it’s important to re-open the debate on what needs to be done to protect our foreshores. If we don’t, we run the risk of having several years with no storms, once again becoming complacent, and once again suffering the consequences when a big blow does eventually come through. For those who haven’t walked along the Maraetai beachfront since the storm, the photo right shows the extent of the damage. And it is happening all around the Coast. Kawakawa Bay has also been grappling with this problem for years.

Both at Maraetai and the Bay, various methods have been tried to stablisie the foreshore – with mixed results. But the general trend is one of relentless advance by the sea. My natural instinct is to support the building of a huge wall along the Maraetai beachfront – like the one at Sunkist Bay (Beachlands). Big, strong and high. That would show Mother Nature just who is boss! But it would also be ugly, restrict beach access, and probably wouldn’t work anyway. Having talked with Brigid Glass (quoted in the article) I now tend to her point of view: that we should encourage nature to work with us, rather than against us. A dune grass planting programme along the ocean beaches around Mt Maunganui-Tauranga has produced spectacular results. Not only has erosion been halted, but the grasses have anchored the dunes and gradually advanced the foreshore. Those are wind-swept ocean beaches and, therefore the results have been quicker than they are likely to be at Omana, Maraetai and Kawakawa Bay, but the experimental planting area on the eastern end of Maraetai Beach has shown encouraging rsults. I hope Auckland Council gives careful consideration to this option. For the past 20 years all sorts of mostly man-made solutions have been tried and in most instances Mother Nature has laughed in our faces. Maybe it’s time to do it her way.

Don’t make it easy for thieves! I can remember when I could leave my door open, and no-one would worry. Even left the key on a string in the letter-box. Nobody ever took advantage of it. How wonderful it would be to return to those days! Sadly, you cannot. In fact, you have to be even more careful than ever. Little things, like leaving the car door unlocked overnight. Worse still, leaving the keys in the ignition. Not a good idea. When you go out shopping remember to hide ANY items not wanted at the time in the boot, the glove compartment, or at least out of sight. You don’t want uninvited attention to your vehicle. Covering up the items in your car is not a soloution. The would-be thief wants to know what is under that blanket or coat. Out at Kawakawa Bay resident of 11 years Neil O’Hara showed the PC Times the extent of foreshore erosion. Tree roots are exposed, the grass bank is crumbling away, stormwater pipes are exposed and a power pylon is perilously close to being undermined. “It’s a valuable bit of land [the foreshore between road and beach]. There have been funerals, weddings and you often can’t get a car on here. It’s a popular little area,” says Neil. “In 10 years time we will be very short of parking. Eventually the road will be under threat. “ However, Neil says that earlier efforts to halt erosion using small round rocks has worked well in the places on the foreshore where they have been placed – notably near the boat ramp and around Whitford Pt. He supports the planting of grasses and ground covers to stabilise the sand and foreshore, but in places where erosion has resulted in a raised lip more rocks are needed. “And it’s got to happen immediately. This is a busy place in the summer and there can be thousands of people out here.” Last weekend saw a community planting day at Kawakawa Bay where local residents , assisted by Auckland Council, planted some 1600 grasses and ground covers along the foreshore of First Bay in an attempt to stop foreshore erosion. Among those helping were Franklin’s representative on Auckland Council, Bill Cashmore. He is a supporter of the “soft” approach of planting buffer areas to protect the foreshore. “When waves hit the hard surface of a seawall, they scoop out sand and take it off the beach. We need a combination of hard surfaces and planting. There will be some hits and misses with planting and at times we may lose 80% of it, but we have to be persistent,” says Bill. In the case of Maraetai, Bill would like to see the experimental planting area at the eastern end of the beach extended along the rest of the beach. He says millions of dollars can be wasted if erosion prevention isn’t done properly. Long time foreshore campaigner Geoff Bignell, of Omana, fears it may be too late for a planting solution and that a substantial seawall may be the only answer along the Maraetai beachfront. “The council were told at the time that if they intervened by putting their [Maraetai foreshore] walkway where they’ve put it, it would cause problems because it exacerbates the run-off. It’s

She says it gives her a peaceful place to paint away from household chores and life as a busy mum. Helen also enjoys sharing her artistic talent through art classes she runs locally for adults at the Coastguard building in Maraetai on a Thursday morning. She also belongs to the Coast and Country Art Collective for local artists on the Pohutukawa Coast. Helen was looking forward to flying to Wellington with husband Alan for the gala opening of the NZ Art Show on Wednesday. The event showcases a wide variety of art in all mediums from emerging and established artists. The NZ Art Show, at the TSB Bank arena at Queens Wharf on the Wellington waterfront runs until this Sunday. A prize of $5000 will be awarded to an outstanding artwork chosen by the public.

only a matter of time before that timber work by the wharf disappears. I’ve nothing against the boardwalk, or the cycle/walkway, it’s where they’ve put it that is the issue,” says Geoff. When Geoff was chairman of the Maraetai Ratepayers & Residents Association some years ago, the association proposed forming walkways to the beach with plantings of natives shrubs, and rocks to form a barrier that would withstand storm conditions., “ But council wouldn’t listen. Instead, they’ve used concrete and grass. Grass isn’t a great absorber – water just runs off.” Geoff believes it is now too late to implement the proposal his association advocated at the time. “I think they are now left with only one real option and that’s to put in a solid seawall similar to Waiomanu Bay. “ Another Omana resident, Brigid Glass, has been a long time advocate on behalf of the Pohutukawa Coast Community Association for the restoration of sand dunes as a way of, not just preventing erosion, but reclaiming foreshore through natural beach building. In a presentation to the Franklin Local Board Brigid said patterns of erosion could easily, and relatively cheaply, be turned into a patREAD tern of accretion. Coast Netball Club needs your help The Pohutukawa Coast Netball Club is looking for volunteers to run the club next year. A public meeting has been called for next Monday, 28 July at Te Puru Sports Centre to look at steering the club into the future. “This year we have been running without a president and at the end of this season some of the present committee members are stepping down which will leave a huge gap as their knowledge and input will be sorely missed,” says a club spokesperson Chris Biggs. “We need some new volunteers who can hold some key positions within the club. It would be a very sad day to see the Club fold due to lack of volunteers. “ Chris says for some years the same core group of women have kept the club running, but many of them no longer have children involved in the club. “We have a very strong position and a great reputation at HPNC and would like to see this continue into the future.” This season the Pohutukawa Coast club has 15 teams competing every Saturday at the Lloyd Elsmore netball courts. “We have great support at the courts but that is where it seems to stop,” says Chris. “Please if you want your daughters to continue playing the community needs you to support the club in more ways.” If you you would like to help please attend the meeting in the Club PROVIDED rooms at Te Puru Sports Centre at 7pm next Monday.

The hopes and dreams of Clevedon paddlers are one huge step closer to reality this month with a $50,000 grant from Auckland Council’s Facility Partnership Fund. The Clevedon Paddling Club, which now has more than 120 members, was incorporated in 2010, based on a shared plan to build a boatshed and pontoon on council land next to the bridge on Clevedon Kawakawa Road. President, fundraiser and backbone of the club Kirsten Corsen says they have been plodding their way through the planning and consents process, and achieving the new funding is a real landmark. “Right now, we have no assets. But we are getting

there, nearly halfway to our $300,000 target,” she says. The vision of the fledgling club is selfless. As well as being a centre for local paddlers, it hopes to promote the facilities, when built, to South Auckland schools to provide introduction to the paddling sports of Waka Ama and kayaking. “Kids just don’t get exposed to these things,” explains Kirsten. “Waka can be an expensive sport, you need a lifejacket and a paddle. “We want to make our river available to schools to come out here and get the kids on the water. “The whole idea is to make it safe, accessible and easy.” The club is already

After spending the last few years planning, drawing up plans for the 9x 21m shed and applying for building and resource consent, the club also had dialogue with the Historic Places Trust, which has now given its approval for the project. Kirsten believes now is an exciting time for the club, with consents in place and with fundrais-

ing gaining momentum. In spring members plan to run a fundraising golf tournament around Clevedon, setting up nine separate holes on local gardens and farms to entice philanthropic golfers to spend a day golfing while seeing the best of Clevedon. Although they have not set a timeframe for reaching their funding target, Clevedon Paddlers are stepping it up and Kirsten says they are keen to hear from anyone

A&P grounds workshop on this Saturday A public workshop is being held this Saturday at the Clevedon Districts Centre to discuss future uses for the Clevedon A and P Showgrounds. “It’s to look at how all the sports codes and different groups can utilise our amazing showgrounds in the best possible way and look at the possibility of a multi-code facility in the future,” says Clevedon resident and local board member Angela Fulljames. “It’s an opportunity for locals to put forward ideas and see what we can do. “There may be codes out there that aren’t using the grounds but might like to.” The workshop is being facilitated by Visitor Solutions and starts at 1.30pm. All welcome.

CLEVEDON & DISTRICTS Fashion at family centre

A Spring fashion show at the Clevedon Family Centre in conjunction with local new store Re & Boutique will put the “fun and fabulous” into fashion and style. Scheduled for Monday September 8, the event promises an inspirational evening for women of all ages. “We’ll have up to 10 lovely local ladies of different ages and sizes as our models,” explains Ginny Kington (right) who recently opened Re & Boutique in Clevedon Village.“Each will model

six or eight different outfits.” The event follows on from a recent Clevedon Family Centre What to Wear evening with local stylist Amanda Child. Amanda will compere the fashion parade. Clevedon Family Centre co-ordinator Heather Chapman says the event will be a great way to celebrate the end of winter. “It will be a lovely opportunity for women to get together to celebrate Spring, local women and local fashion and they’ll be able to buy anything they like on the spot.”

Ginny, originally from Taiwan, has lived in Clevedon for 14 years with husband Scott and their two sons Jamyeson (13) and Ethynn (10). She regularly helps out at the Clevedon Family Centre’s weekly intercultural lunches, using her bi-lingual skills as translator.
