Brian’s nine lives

After suffering from eight heart attacks over the course of 32 years, local man Brian Halton decided it was time to write a book.

The Victoria University Chemistry Professor wrote ‘A Cat of Nine Lives – and the Beat Goes On’ for anyone who might be suffering, or knows someone who is suffering, from heart disease.

From having a heart attack in Holland when he was travelling by himself, to having a heart attack while on holiday in Nelson, Brian has experienced it all.

Brian explained how the book is for ‘anybody that needs it’ and said he hopes it will help people get a feel for where they are at.

Scrub Fire in Johnsonville

Johnsonville and Porirua Fire Services were called out to a fire in Johnsonville at around 5pm on Friday night.

The fire which broke out on a section off Braemar Terrace had to be extinguished from Monowai Street.

As the smoke grew higher, residents rushed out to get a look at the blaze.

first smelt the smoke they thought something in their house was burning.

“We were eating our fish and chips when we saw the fire.

“Jesse ( Ni k i’s you ng daughter) was the first to see the smoke – we looked out the window and saw just a little bit of smoke but then it grew and grew,” Niki said.

Grenada Village resident Karla said she saw the fire from the window of her lounge.

“One of the kids said it looked like there was a fire starting, and then it just took off,” she said.

She said the fi rst person to call the fire in was a man from Grenada Village.

“We can see everything from up there,” she explained.

Firemen told the residents that it was a scrub fire and not a house fire.

“We thought it was a house fire because it is surrounded by houses,” Karla said.

“The GP [general practitioner] didn’t pick it up either,” Brian explained.

After having open heart surgery as a result of the heart attack, Brian recovered well.

He said though the surgery went well, he was told by the cardiologist that at best he would live for a further five years.

“After the bypass surgery and the subsequent recovery, five years came up.”

Brian said he felt lucky to have five years, saying it was “better than nothing”, but defied all odds by lasting for 17 years before having heart attack number two.

A Cat of Nine Lives includes a foreword from Rongotai MP Annette King and provides heart disease sufferers with a “series of events” in Brian’s life so they have something to relate to when going through similar procedures.

The book provides people with information about how they will feel, what to expect and even images – including one of a procedure room.

Brian said most people who have heart disease just hear about the disease from the medics they are dealing with. His book gives people the chance to hear what it is like straight from the patient’s mouth.

“I want to let people know they can live a full and complete life,” Brian said.

Young actors squawk at Fringe

A group of actors have put together a performance for the upcoming Fringe Festival, aiming to be the youngest ever companies to produce a work in the festivals 26 year history.

Aged just 12-17, the Wellington Young Actors and Churton Park Young Actors have been collaborating to produce an original work called Squawk.

The Young Actors explore the dark truth behind fairy tales and reveal how fragile the world of myths, legends and stories really is.

Squawk is a pantomime fairytale with a modern twist featuring singing, dancing and acting.

The performance explores the side of fairytales that is hidden away behind the beautiful ball gowns and castles.

Charm Tuapawa said there is a scene where the princess characters are locked away in a dungeon but are released to fight their point in court.

This is a social commentary on the events in parliament last year when several female MPs were ordered to leave after declarations they had been victims of assault.

“We are trying to show that this is not okay,” Charm said.

Wellington Young Actors have previously performed their original work To Sunder for which they were named 2015 New Zealand Fringe Festival's Best Newcomer and were nominated for Outstanding Ensemble.

The Young Actors have been working on Squawk since December and the two groups are managing all production roles including designing the set and costumes, marketing and fundraising.

Actor Emily Butler said she wasn’t expecting Squawk to turn out the way it did.

“I was expecting something completely different, but it came together and I’m really happy with what we’ve got,” she said.

Honouring Celia Lashlie The work, life and values of social justice advocate Celia Lashlie will be acknowledged at a one-day seminar this month.

The contribution Celia made to New Zealand society will be honoured at the seminar hosted by the Stout Research Centre for New Zealand Studies at Victoria University.

Cruise guests spend “amazing night” in Wellington

The Azamara Quest cruised into the Wellington Port, and with it came over 600 guests who spent one “amazing evening” at Te Papa museum.

Over 600 guests poured into the museum for a night of traditional and contemporary Maori culture, mixed with fine dining.

Azamara cruise ships try to have a ‘cruise industry event’ such as the one held at Te Papa Museum on every trip to give guests a taste of each country’s culture.

Kinchley said the feedback from passengers about their night at our national museum was fantastic.

He said a cruise docking in ports such as Wellington is hugely beneficial to the local economy.

“Passengers spend roughly $120 per person, per day during a stopover.

“If the cruise industry was a country it would be number three in terms of bringing revenue to New Zealand – behind China and Australia,” he said.

Mark said Hotel Director Philip Herbert has the second most important job on the ship (behind the Captain) as every-

thing is under his command.

“His position is a pivotal part of running the ship.”

Philip, who has been working on the ship since 2007, said Azamara guests have always wanted the cruise to include Australia and New Zealand.

He said due to the success of coming to our part of the world, Azamara will be returning.

“The feedback about New Zealand has been tremendous.

“We will be coming back on a regular basis over the next three years,” Philip said.

He said Azamara staff pride themselves on their friendly attitudes.

“If you have friendly staff you

get friendly guests, it’s a win - win situation for everyone.”

The ship holds over 650 guests and has 400 crew members who keep it up and running.

After the cruise is finished the ship will go to Singapore for a $25 million revitalisation including the installation of two new spa suites.

Facilities on the cruise include a pool, a number of restaurants, a casino, a salon, an art auction and much more for Azamara guests to enjoy.

On Friday, the guests were treated to dinner under the stars in our capital city with a ‘white knight’ themed evening.

Toll on water supply Wellington Water is calling for householders to be water smart as the run of dry weather has led to a dramatic jump in consumption in Lower Hutt, Porirua, Upper Hutt and Wellington when they hit 168 million litres, much higher than the same time the previous week (Thursday 28 January was 138 ML). “Our riverbased water supply means water demand rises at the same time as the supplies begin to dry up” Alex van Paassen, Wellington Water’s Community Engagement Manager said.

A community team comprised of one sergeant and four constables will take turns manning the new kiosk.

“While the change is about making us more readily accessible than before, our service isn’t just confined to the kiosk.

Police will be offering a new service at the Karori Community Centre from Wednesday, February 10.

Police will be on site at the community centre to meet with Karori residents between 10am and 1pm each Wednesday, Inspector Chris Bensemann said.

“Over the years, fewer and fewer people have been using the office located up in Marsden Village.

“The community told us that they wanted to see more of a Police presence on the street and less time sitting behind a desk, so for that reason, we will no longer be based in the office, but will be available at the kiosk,” Chris said.

inbrief news Condolences for Crankworx ambassador The Crankworx whanau is deeply shocked and saddened by the loss of one of their own Kelly McGarry, the big man, with the big heart and the big smile. They said their thoughts and deepest condolences go out to his girlfriend, Samantha, his family, business partner Tom Hey and all of his friends in New Zealand and around the world. Kelly was a pioneer slopestyle rider and a Crankworx legend, known as much for his big heart and ever-present smile as his epic air. His contribution to the sport and festival will not be forgotten, and his positive energy will be woefully missed, the Crankworx team stated.

Drainage laterals On Thursday the Wellington City Council’s Environment Committee will consider a proposal that the Council accept ownership of, and responsibility for, the repair and renewal of private sewerage laterals where they cross roads and road verges. The committee will be asked to agree to seek Council approval to take over ownership and responsibility for the portion of wastewater service pipes (laterals) in road reserve.

The public would also be able to have a say on the proposal as part of the 2016-17 Annual Plan consultation from late March.

Students march for centenary This week saw the launch of some serious celebrations to mark the 100th birthday of a prestigious Wellington Boy’s College.

On Friday, February 5 at 9.15am the Scots College Pipe Band led the whole school and community from Queen Margaret’s College – the site of the original Scots College – on a march to parliament.

The group was greeted by the Honourable Chris Finlayson as well as other VIPs.

On Monday the public was also invited to join in the fun with a centenary picnic and sports tournament on the Scots College field.

Guests could indulge in the Tuatara Beer Garden and the Mojo Coffee Caravan who were raising money for the college cricket club.

Funding boost for local school

Thanks to a $6 million investment a local school will be able to build a new innovative learning environment.

The Ministry of Education announced a $6 million investment in Khandallah Primary School and acting Principal Trevor Jeffries said the school is looking forward to installing the new facilities.

“It is immensely exciting – every school in Wellington would jump at this opportunity,” Trevor said.

The decision came as a result of some of the classroom buildings being out of date, as well as steady role growth at the school.

Trevor said the previous principal of Khandallah School Louise Greer has been behind the project for the past five years.

By Sharnahea Wilson We caught up with singer/ songwriter Ali Whitton from folk duo Lost Bird ahead of the debut release of their two new tracks. Ali played under his own name for ten years before meeting violin, mandolin playing musician Oliver Vetter. Both artists work on making our capital city a better place – Oliver works for Sustainable Coastlines and Ali works in an innovative role running green space and recreation projects for Wellington City Council. The duo will be releasing their new songs When Nobody Loves You and Holdin’ Out for Somebody on Sunday, February 14 at Tuatara Third Eye, 7.30pm.

What sparked your interest in music?

I started writing words when I was 15 or so, and shortly after that I picked up a guitar out of boredom and curiosity. The two soon linked together.

How long have you and Oliver been playing as a duo for?

Oliver works for Sustainable Coastlines and I was booked to play some songs at a waterfront clean-up about a year ago. He spoke that day about being a fiddle player and even joined in on a Bob Dylan cover. A few months later I gave him a call and asked if he’d like to help me

with recording some demos and it went from there.

What are each of your roles in the duo?

I’m the whingy depressing singer-songwriter and he’s the beer-swigging gun-slinging fiddle player. He comes from a background of really upbeat country/bluegrass, and I come from melancholy introspective singer-songwriter stuff and we both meet in the middle ground somewhere. There’s an unwritten rule in my head that I know I need to write one upbeat song out of every three in order to keep Oliver in the band!

What were these two tracks inspired by?

When Nobody Loves You was one of a bunch of songs that was written upon my emergence from two years of illness (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome). Despite its kinda downbeat title, it’s actually a song about freedom, when the only person you’re responsible for is yourself – you can do anything!

Holdin’ Out for Somebody is my take on being single and thirty-two and seeing facebook feeds of babies and marriages and house buying, all the social norms of my peers. It can make me doubt

my everlasting belief that there’s somebody out there for everyone. It’s questioning that. I really hope people identify with it.

and when we play it live it’s really raw and wild – so that’s been slightly neatened, but now it gels better with the other song.

Did the tracks turn out how you had hoped they would?

Why did you choose Valentine’s Day as your release date?

Holdin’ Out for Somebody was so newly written before we went into the studio that we had no preconceptions and I knew I wanted a song that sounded like it could be played on an old gramophone on someone’s front porch – so I hope we nailed that!

But When Nobody Loves You (You Don’t Need to be Saved) we’d been gigging for ages,

It was suggested by our friend Jen as a joke because of the theme of the songs, but hopefully it’s also a statement about the nonsense that is Valentine’s Day, and trying to be a bit dark and funny about it, we hope our event might actually bring people together.

Bridge signs spark debate Signs hung by the public on the Johnsonville Bridge are sparking debate.

Local man Cormac Byrne agued the signs are hanging hazards and they lower the tone of the new bridge.

“There is a safety hazard as these people can’t even cut cable ties flush.

“These are like razors if you scrape yourself with them,” Cor-

mac said, adding “I observed them at small children’s height”.

Cormac suggested people who want to advertise should do so on platforms such as Trademe.

“I would like these wood structures removed from our bridge and if possible advertised elsewhere.

“I would also like our bridge free from hazards and possible issues, they were not in

the bridge design and I don't believe this type of advertising is feasible as an acceptable model going forward,” he said.

Deputy Mayor Justin Lester said there has been a tradition of people putting up signs for community events on the bridge.

“I think this is a reasonable way to create public awareness for important community initiatives,” he said.

Justin did however agree that sometimes there are better ways to advertise – such as on Neighbourly, facebook or in the local newspaper.

“The test should be – is there a broad community interest in the information being displayed.”  What are your thoughts on the public hanging signs on the new bridge?

Dancers delighted with new floor

Dancers are jumping for joy over a brand new wooden floor for the Jennifer Evans Dance Academy at Samuel Marsden Collegiate School in Karori.

Students Bria Renai and Lucy Brow have been dedicated in raising funds for a new wooden sprung dance floor for the studio.

The girls explained that the old floor was concrete with lino over the top.

The enthusiastic dancers decided to put together a wine fundraiser to raise money for the floor.

“We organised to sell crates of wine with $40 from every box

going towards the floor,” Bria explained.

They also put together a movie viewing of the latest Cinderella film and had everybody dress up as their favourite movie characters.

Altogether the girls raised $8000 to put toward the new dance floor.

Bria and Lucy explained how they wanted to have fundraisers that would suit everyone.

“The wine sale was more for the older students’ families and the movie night was for the younger students,” Lucy said.

Bria said her dance teacher Jennifer Evans was delighted with their contributions to the floor.

New playground in full swing

Children were delighted at the opening of an exciting new adventure playground which took place at Amesbury School on Tuesday.

Though the school in Churton Park has a council funded playground, a bigger wooden playground was built to present a bit more of a challenge for older students.

Amesbury School Principal Lesley Murrihy said the school community was really pleased with the final product.

She explained how the playground was designed by landscape architect Mark Newdick who had also designed the rest of the school.

“The space for the playground was incorporated into the original school designs,” Lesley explained.

She said the playground compliments the schools five star green rating because of its natural design.

“It is more natural with the wood, and the plants around the outside also fit with the whole aim of the playground,” Lesley said.

Now that students can enjoy the new playground, Lesley is happy with the finished product.

“We are really pleased with it,” she said.

Deputy Mayor Justin Lester said a few words at the opening ceremony and the Johnsonville Charitable Trust handed over a cheque for $25,000 funding for the playground.

“It is a great investment – it is going to be exceptional,” Justin said.

“Because it is for children aged nine plus, it will complement the existing council playground really well.”

Lesley said now that they playground is in full swing the school will work on completing other projects such as building a bike track.

“Every year a new project is completed,” she said.

Waitangi Day Celebrations

By Rachel Binning A day of reflection and celebration marked this year’s Waitangi Day celebrations held at Waitangi Park.

Following a traditional waiata the laid back crowd was thoroughly entertained by a dynamic stage line-up officiated by Frankie Stevens.

Amongst kapahaka groups, beat box-

ing and dance were crowd favourite and Kiwi music legend Ardijah who responded to the crowd’s enthusiasm with the band’s well-known hits.

Between selling the crowd delicious hangi food, Lena Meinders Chair of Nga Hau E Wha O Papararangi Marae in Newlands explained, “Waitangi Day is an opportunity for us as a roopu to celebrate unity”.

This Waitangi Day, the marae took a calculated risk in selling vegetarian hangi for the first time. The surprise was they sold out within the first hour.

Crowd member Ana Tapiata said the day was “about celebrating the relationship between Maori and Pakeha in New Zealand”.

Rider heads abroad

Local software developer meets mountain biking enthusiast Jonny Waghorn is heading overseas at the end of March for part of an eightseries riding competition.

A mix of downhill biking and mountain biking, the series will involve races in Chile, Argentina, America, Canada, Ireland, France and Italy.

Jonny has been mountain biking for 30 years but has become enthralled in racing over the past five years.

Jonny gained entry into a Rotorua racing competition last year and finished in third place.

The enthusiastic racer aims to come in the top four in his first few races of the series in Chile and Argentina.

“I have signed up for six events and will definitely participate in the first four.

“Whether I compete in the last two events will depend how well I do in the first four,” Jonny said.

He said he has always loved the outdoors and while he really enjoys racing it can be quite challenging and pretty scary at times.

Each race will consist of riding roughly 50 kilometres per day against 50-80 other competitors in his 40 plus category.

This will be the second time Jonny will head overseas for a competition.

Jonny competed in France and landed fourth place in his category.

Jonny said he will take the opportunity to do some travelling between competitions, including a road trip to Colorado.

“A lot of bikers hang out together between races.

“I am now friends with people from all over the place,” he said.

The series will involve around 600 competitors altogether and Jonny is looking forward to getting amongst the action.

BMX track comes to Karori

A brand new BMX track with a modern design is set to open in Karori on Sunday, February 28 and the Capital BMX Club say all are welcome.

The track which is set to be the largest BMX track in the lower North Island will open at the southern end of Ian Galloway Park at 2pm.

Capital BMX Club secretary and spokesperson Leasa Carlyon said the track will be a regional asset.

“It will be a great place for people to learn to ride,” she said.

After a brief presentation and a ribbon cutting ceremony, the crowd will be treated to some BMX race demonstrations from elite riders across the region. “[The track] will put Wellington back on New Zealand’s BMX map and allow Capital BMX to develop a fun and vibrant BMX club for riders of all ages and abilities – from beginners through to BMX superstars,” she said.

She said when fully finished,

the new track will be a UCI International level track and will attract BMX regional, North Island and National level BMX competitions to Wellington, bringing up to 3,000 riders and supporters to the city.

After nearly three years of planning and fund raising, the 400m track will feature a stateof-the-artstart gate, and a club and pro-line in the third straight providing a challenge for beginnersto elite riders.

The track was designed by Australasia’s leading BMX track designer Brett Barnes of DIRTZ and has been built by internationally renowned New Zealand track builders Empire of Dirt.

Once opened, the track will be free for the public to use outside of Club race and training events.

Top spot at tennis comp

Queen Margaret College students swung into action at a recent national Tennis competition held in Auckland.

The Tennis National Teams Event, held as part of the Central 14s combined girls and boys team, was held in Auckland at the Scarbro tennis centre from January 8 - 11.

Ivy McLean and Jourdan Craig were selected for the central team to play as the number one player and the number four player, and managed to take out the competitions top spot.

The team consisted of four girls and four boys, and Jourdan said the players had five rounds against five other teams.

“There were three singles games for girls, and then three for boys,” Jourdan explained.

“Then there was one girl’s doubles, one boy’s doubles and a mixed doubles.”

She said the national event was a great opportunity to meet other tennis players from all over the country.

“We had a lot of fun – it was great hanging out with the other teams,” Jourdan said.

Ivy, who has been playing the game for nearly six years, said as the number one player she played every game in the competition.

The dedicated sportsperson said she trains between eight and nine hours per week, and is currently organising a schedule with her tennis coach.

Ivy said she hopes to pursue tennis further after high school with plans to attend an American university on a tennis scholarship.

For the National Teams Event all the players stayed together in a hall of residence at Auckland City University.
