Imagine arriving in a country with your new husband or wife, unable to speak the local language. How would you do the shopping? How would you find out when the buses run and how to get a ticket? When Puri (pictured) first came to New Zealand from Spain more than 20 years ago, she was in just this position. Her inability in English was doubly frustrating because her excellent communication skills in Spanish had resulted in good jobs there. Coping with everyday situations might be reasonably straightforward, but what happens when you need to go to the doctor or the hospital for either yourself or your child? Or the Police want to interview you because you’ve observed a car accident? It’s on these occasions that an interpreter is vital. Nowadays, as a very fluent speaker of both English and Spanish and a fullytrained interpreter, Puri feels satisfied in helping other people bridge the language gap that she struggled with so much. But it’s not just being helpful that makes this a great job for Puri. Interpreting assignments take place anywhere and everywhere, so she has to draw on all the various skills
