St. Teresa's School had a special planting ceremony last week to celebrate Matariki.

Matariki is traditionally a time for remembering the dead, and celebrating new life so planting new plants at the school was a fitting gesture by the students.

Creative Show Off has been providing fantastical costumes in Thorndon for 15 years.

Any business celebrating its 15th birthday has got to be happy, and owner Vaughan Crimmins says, “We hope it continues, trading conditions are somewhat different from when we started, but most small business’ are feeling the effect, but we provide something different and unique.”

Vaughan explained that they “construct costumes when people are here. Costumes are not just one item; they’re made up of different elements to suit the individual. They can try on accessories, so you start with say a basic 70s costume then add a coat, a hat, necklace, wigs, and boots.”

dressmaker. The costume shop and its staff of dressmakers have been providing the Wellington region with costumes and accessories for birthdays, fancy dress, Halloween, balls and everything in between.

Manager at the store Sandra Annear added, “We’re constantly refurbishing and changing costumes to suit people and to keep standards up. We cater for lots of different groups, we hire out to theatre, school productions, and corporate.”

“I’ve had people come back into me to tell me they’ve won Best Dressed. The last thing you want is someone wearing the exact same costume as you at a party. I love creating costumes so it’s completely different. If there are 10 pirates going to a party, they won’t be all the same,” says Sandra about her costume creating skills.

“The taller plants represent the senior classes, these smaller plants represent Year 1-6,” she added referring to the collection of native plants.

“I want to see them grow big and strong,” says Kirdan Tofilau, a Year 2 student. “I’m excited about Matariki and the planting. We can grow these new plants so we know it’s a New Year,” he says.

Principal Mary-Angela led proceedings with songs and prayer and explained that it was about celebrating Matariki, but also about growing native flora and fauna at the school. The aim is to create a sanctuary where kids can care for the environment.

“This is the first lot of native plants, but all the bank area of the school is being redeveloped. We’ll have a potting shed and an outdoor classroom. We’ve been working and fundraising for this for two years,” says Principal Mary-Angela.

Following the ceremony teachers and pupils were treated to drinks and a sausage sizzle provided by FOST. FOST is a dedicated group of St. Teresa’s parents who cooked up the sausage storm.

Sunshine kindergarten theft

Less green fingers and more sticky fingers this week in Karori as a thief made off with an estimated $80 worth of plants from Sunshine kindergarten.

The discovery was made last Tuesday by Sunshine student Anouk Verschueren, when she noticed several plants missing from the kindergarten’s carefully planted edible garden.

Anouk, 4, made the discovery shortly after arriving at school and reported it to staff.

The plants, which had only been planted by the children earlier in the term, will cost upwards of $80 to replace and Head Teacher Jan Ritchie has explained that the kindergarten is a 'not for profit' organisation which relies on parent donations, grants and fundraising so it’s another expense to cover.

Jan also says, “This theft may not mean a lot for some but the cost to replace the plants is around $80.”

Jan is hoping to track down the whereabouts or “make the person responsible a bit more aware of the ramifications

Gunman in Karori

Worrying news for Karori residents last Friday as armed police were hunting down a man who forced his way into a home in the Collier Avenue area. Six vehicles and police dogs were deployed to the suburb in the early morning.

Police proceeded to cordon off Collier Avenue, Richmond Avenue, and the south part of Karori Road after the man threatened a woman on her

doorstep.

The man arrived at the victim’s home and police believe he was brandishing a weapon; the assailant proceeded to enter the woman's home and steal a wallet with a sum of money.

The woman managed to escape and alerted her neighbours who called the police.

It’s been reported that the lady was frightened and told her neighbour that there was a man next door with a gun.

Police at Karori library who were on guard for much of the late morning and afternoon refused to comment further on the incident. However police finally lifted the cordon at 2.30pm on Friday.

One local resident said, “It’s a little bit scary” about the incident, another commented, “I’ll be locking my doors tonight.”

Debate win for Onslow

Wellington Cathedral St. Paul have raised much needed funds for the people of Nepal by hosting friends and neighbours for coffee mornings, lunches and afternoon teas. The money goes towards the Christian World Service Nepal appeal. Jane Wilkinson started the initiative.

The fifth annual intercollege debate, sponsored by the Lions Club of Johnsonville, took place recently and the impressive Onslow College’s debating team made up of Rory Somerset, Chris Parsons and Cameron Wright took the victory.

On June 11 teams debated the topic that “That overseas tourists must prove their driving competency before operating a motor vehicle on New Zealand roads", with host college Newlands taking the affirmative view.

The two teams battled it out, with carefully crafted closing arguments.

It was then up to guest adjudicators Hon Peter Dunne, and Maddy Nash of Victoria University, to decide on the winners.

The pair determined that Onslow had won narrowly, based on Rory, Chris and Cameron’s clear outline, well researched statistics and alternatives to the driving test proposal.

Professor Blackwell

An ex Newlands College student has recently been appointed a Professor of Interdisciplinary Design at Cambridge University. Professor Alan Blackwell has taken on the role at the prestigious university in the UK. Alan went to Newlands College and graduated the school in 1979 and has since gone onto great things, excelling in everything from psychology to his now chosen field of computers.

Alan’s mother Claire Blackwell, who is still living in Newlands,

got the call this week and was told the good news about her son’s new title.

“Alan told us on Sunday that he’d been appointed a Professor at Cambridge,” says Claire.

It’s been a long academic road to get to this point explains Claire, “Alan went to Bellevue, then Newlands, went onto college in Auckland and then worked in Wellington before moving to England. He was given the friendly advice to do a PHD in Cambridge and he got a grant. He was then taken on as a lecturer, after a while he was a senior lecturer,

Alan has been in the UK for 25 years in fact, and Claire went to visit just last year. Luckily Alan, his wife and daughter plan a trip home this year so the family can celebrate.

“We’ll celebrate all the time until then. Needless to say we’re so proud. Alan always had a wide range of interests and the academic life called,” says Claire.

“I’m impressed that this little boy entered Newlands College

Johnsonville Lions Club incoming president Sandra Gaelic said she was impressed by the research and creativity shown by the members of both college teams, as well as their confidence with public speaking.

“It is clear the college team members had strong ideas about the possible merits and downsides of requiring testing of tourist drivers,” she said. “I’m pleased that Johnsonville Lions were able to provide these young people with the opportunity to share their thoughts and skills,” she says.

Both Hon Peter Dunne and Maddy Nash adjudicators agreed that the debating standard had risen exponentially over the years, with both teams presenting clear thinking and strong arguments.

This year the audience of 35 at the Johnsonville Lions Intercollege debate enjoyed the representation of the argument by both sides, the humour and the well formulated speeches by both Newlands and Onslow.

Tanisha Wardle is pushing the boundaries of acting; the Johnsonville actor will play over a dozen characters in Stagecraft’s production of the 39 Steps - Patrick Barlow’s play adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic spy film.

The fast paced play will have quick costume and stage changes, altered accents from Scottish highlands to cockney, and gender switches, which only add to the madcap premise of the play. Tanisha says the show has been hugely demanding but also hugely fun to rehearse.

“It’s been a bit like learning a dance,” says Tanisha. “Because I play up to three characters in some scenes, you have to rely on the muscle memory of being in the right place at the right time. Then the characters just come.”

And as if Tanisha’s life wasn’t fast paced enough she also recently organised a ‘Shave for a Cure’ campaign which raised nearly $5,000 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. Tanisha shaved her head in 'Sarak Hair Salon', and 'You Little Beauty', in Johnsonville back in March.

“It was so worthwhile to do and we raised a lot of money but have to say I was a bit worried about whether I’d get into the play when I turned up bald,” says Tanisha.

Blink and you would have missed the action at the 2015 New Zealand National Sport Stacking Championships on Saturday June 20. Speed stackers aged between 3 and 55 years competed against each other in different individual age and gender group competitions throughout the day.

signed plastic stacking cups were required to arrange cups in different pyramid combinations of 3-3-3, 3-63, and cycle. Competitors then pulled the cups down as fast as possible while being timed.

For eight year old Tara Macher of Khandallah it was her first competition. She has only been involved in the sport since last December. Tara had first seen stacking on the Ellen De Generas show and had then asked her mum for some cups.

Tara’s mum, Waty Macher took a bit of convincing but is now fully supportive of her daughter who practices five times a week for about an hour each day. Waty said the sport

was “better than [Tara] being in front of the computer all the time.”

Nathan Carter, 14, of Kelburn has been stacking for about four and a half years. His grandparents bought him his first set of cups, mat and his timer. Nathan said stacking was a “very addictive sport that really gets you hooked.”

Nathan was part of the 2015 New Zealand Black Stacks representing New Zealand for the World Sport Stacking Championships held each Northern Hemisphere Spring. He got fourth place in the head-to-head relay in the 14 years and under category in Montreal, Canada in April this year.

Monique Lubberink moved to Johnsonville from the Netherlands two years ago where she worked as a psychologist for adults with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD. She also gained experience in mindfulness training and brings this training and expertise to Churton Park.

“My training is very down to earth. People will practice all kinds of meditations to discover what works for them best as they know themselves best. They get all meditations to download on their computer and phone to practice,” says Monique.

Next month in Churton Park Community Centre Monique is running an Easy Now Mindful Parent training for parents and “their little ones.”

Monique explains the idea behind the class and mindfulness, “I really think mindfulness is something everybody can benefit from.”

Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention on the present. When you're mindful, you observe your thoughts and feelings from a distance, without judgment.

Monique had some trouble settling into life in New Zealand and found the practice of mindfulness really helped her adjust.

Monique "upped" her mindfulness practice and started to feel better again. “This has motivated me to start Easy Now Mindfulness,” explains Monique.

“Mindfulness has been around a long time and is scientifically proven to reduce feelings of stress, depression and anxiety. I wouldn't want to do anything that wasn't proven to work,” Monique added.

The training’s overall aim is to help reduce incidences of anxiety, and depression and can leave people better equipped to deal with the stresses of everyday life.

Monique goes on to explain that she's not opposed to medication at all. Mindfulness may not be for those at the more severe end of the depression spectrum.

Good playgrounds, swimming pools, rugby clubs, and young people that are really into their sports. Many kids play sports because the teams are well established, which encourages the children to take part in activities.

I have a baby and a three year old in day-care, there are some playgrounds and they’re good but there could be more. However the swimming pool is an amazing facility for the children.

Highway a bad joke Dear Ed, The Mayor thinks 'A smart capital deserves a smart motorway' (Independent Herald, 17 June, page 1). Presumably she is referring to Wellington and I could not agree with her more.

Major work is underway upgrading the State Highway 1 Thorndon overbridge and through to Ngauranga which I am sure will be great when

it's finished. But for most of the rest of State Highway 1 through the city it's a bad joke.

We still have only three lanes through the Terrace Tunnel (single lane southbound), a major problem through Vivian Street, the tangle at the Basin Reserve (the only practical solution to this has been blocked on dubious grounds), a jam-packed

Hataitai Tunnel, single lane each way along Ruahine Street, and problems at Wellington Road, all this on State Highway 1 through a key part of the city! Hardly a 'smart' motorway. Come on Wellington City Council and the New Zealand Transport Agency let's get it sorted, and quickly.

National Young Leaders Day

More than 70 schools from Wellington including primary and intermediate students from Johnsonville, Khandallah and Newlands gathered at the Opera House for a day of leadership inspiration as part of National Young Leaders Day. Students heard from leaders in their fields like Masterchef judge Simon Gault, World Vision youth partner manager Chris Jupp, motivational speaker William Pike, sand artist Marcus Winter and acclaimed singer-songwriter Jam ie McDell. The guest speakers got a chance to speak about the things that inspire and challenge them in their lives.

Motivational speaker William Pike who is a former schoolteacher lost his leg when Mount Ruapehu erupted in 2007. He now runs the William Pike Challenge Award, an outdoor education programme run in New Zealand primary schools.

He encouraged the students to think “all passion, no limits.”

“The only limitations in life are the limitations we put on ourselves. When you think all passion, no limits, there is nothing you can’t do,” he added.

Now in its 15th year the event aims to equip students with the skills to lead themselves and others in the future.

I have also spoken to local residents and members of the Newland Paparangi Progressive Association, who also support the change,” he

The works are a continuation of the Newlands Centre Plan to provide better public spaces and amenities, encourage investment, and have a greater range of shops and services in Newlands. “Newlands is becoming an increasingly attractive place for Wellingtonians to buy their first home and bring up a family. These improvements will help the positive trend,” concluded Mr. Lester.

A special kind of book launch

Six St. Mary’s College Year 12 girls took a dash of pride and a sprinkle of fame and created a book they are proud of.

Jodie Kerr, 16, Rachael Cox, 17, Gemma Englert, 17, Isabella White, 17, Anna Te, 16, and Bri Davey, 16 created a cookbook that has gone on to win the Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme Dragon’s Den heats.

With support from their school the group of young women came together as Kiwi Pride at the beginning of the year as part of their extra-curricular studies.

The scheme allows students to set up a company, create real products or services, compile and implement a business plan and make real profit or loss.

The scheme “gave us the biggest opportunity to venture into the business world and create our own business that we are able to function and maintain as a team,” Kiwi Pride says.

Bri brought the cookbook idea to the table.

Gemma took it one step further with suggest-

ing asking famous people for their recipes.

Gemma’s idea turned out to be the hardest one to do.

“About 100 emails” were sent out says Jodie to “New Zealanders we were proud of.”

The response from notable New Zealanders was positive. Recipes have been provided from personalities such as Sir Richard Hadlee, Erin Simpson, Jamie McDell, John Key, Dame Trelise Cooper, Andrew Little, Cory Jane and Sophie Pascoe.

The cookbook also includes recipes from families, volunteers and employees of Ronald McDonald House.

The team is “very excited” about the official launch of their colourfully designed book Sunday 21 June at Ronald McDonald House.

Some of the recipe contributors attended, including Mary Fisher and Justin Du Fresne.

Importantly, 50% of the sale of each book goes to Ronald McDonald House. Prior to the launch date, sales have already exceeded 60 books.  The cookbook will be sold in stores around Wellington from July. For more information go to www.kiwipride.info

Curtis Street saga

Following a five-day Environment Court Hearing last week land developments on Curtis Street, Karori are under judicial consideration with a decision expected in two or three months.

Last year at a Wellington City Council meeting a decision was made to rezone the strip of land at 55-85 Curtis Street as Curtis Street Business Zone under the District Plan.

This decision was subsequently appealed by the public, questioning Wellington City Council's decision to allow industrialisation of the Curtis Street site.

The main appellant in the case was The Creswick Valley Residents' Association [CVRA], whose case was conducted by long-term local resident, Wayne Newman.

A point of interest from the submission made by CVRA is that at the heart of the residents’ concerns is a desire to enhance amenity and to ensure new development is of a character and scale that is appropriate for the area and neighbourhood in which it is located.

Councillor Andy Foster agreed with these sentiments saying, “The scale and nature of the development is important. If you propose a large

scale supermarket you have to do an economic impact assessment, to assess any adverse effect it might have.”

Cr. Foster added that, “Karori is short on commercially zoned land by a long shot.”

Fellow local resident, Michael Gibson, has said, “Wellington City Council have resolved to commercialise this space even though it was zoned for residential.”

Michael who has been living in the area for 41 years understands that the decision was made to commercialise because councillors were mislead into thinking the site was not suitable for residential housing.

He told the Court that the Council's decision arose from a resolution made after local residents had been kicked out of a Council Committee meeting and Councillors had resolved to make the Plan Change without giving reasons. He said that it was "essentially a Private Plan Change being made at ratepayers' expense.

The landowner could do what he liked with the site including unspecified industrialisation."

Michael firmly believes that there is a shortage of housing in Wellington and housing should be allowed on the site.

The final decision will be made public in the coming months.

Advising citizens for 40 years

The Citizens Advice Bureau [CAB] in Johnsonville has one clear vision, “the provision of free confidential information and advice on everything to everyone.”

Residents of Johnsonville and Karori have Bureau branches on Frankmoore Avenue and Beauchamp Street respectively.

Ken Gurney Manager at the Johnsonville Branch explains that CAB [Northern Suburbs] covers Wilton to Tawa and has been running for 40 years, and they celebrate their Birthday this August.

Ken also explains that Johnsonville are the only Wellington

CAB to have a food bank which is administered and run from Johnsonville and primarily for Johnsonville clients.

With Volunteer Week running this week until June 27 Ken says, “Volunteers play a pivotal role in the running and management of CAB. Nationally CAB has over 2,700 Volunteers. At Johnsonville I have 49 volunteers and need 33 volunteers a week to keep the doors open. We get approximately 600 enquiries a month. These are in depth enquiries,” says Ken. The CAB covers a whole range of areas, including helping people to know and understand their rights and obligations, helping people to use the information

provided to good effect. The main areas covered are housing and tenancy, employment, bullying, consumer issues, benefit rights, community advocacy, education and legal government.

Becoming a volunteer with CAB involves an initial application, followed by an interview, basic training course, 3 month’s probation, and full membership to put one's knowledge to the test, providing free information and advice, which is impartial and non-judgemental across a diverse range of services.  For further information on become a volunteer or information on the services check out the website www.cab.org.nz

Karori Event Centre Karori Community Hall Trust this week presented their eighth annual report to the public at the Karori Community Centre.

The report gave a breakdown of the Trust activities over the past year, such as changes of Trustee membership, results of their marketing initiatives, legal support and on-going tasks.

The report also outlined the plans for the coming year to fundraise, build, equip and manage the Events Centre

which will be a multi-purpose venue, architecturally designed by Shand Shelton with a welcoming open-fronted space for community members.

The Event Centre will cater for exhibitions, meetings, performances and more. It will be a fit-for-purpose community hall for Karori.

The Trust thanked City Councillors in attendance Jo Coughlan, Simon Woolf and Sarah Free for their ongoing support, along with Andy Foster.

Shwetha Wevita, 17, from Karori received the prestigious ‘Most Promising Actor Sam Wanamaker Award’ and was selected to attend Shakespeare Globe Centre New Zealand [SGCNZ] National Shakespeare Schools Production week long intensive course this year.

Shwetha received her award for a role she played in a Scots College production of Cymbeline.

“It was quite a surprise, I only had a small role as The Evil Queen,” explains Shwetha “We did a play with Scots

College, once a week we had practice. It gave me a great opportunity,” she added.

The course will be based at the Silverstream Retreat, with public performances throughout the week.

“I’m looking forward to the week-long intensive course. It’s a retreat in Wellington so it’ll be quite fun. We’ll do a range of things,” says Shwetha.

Shwetha will be joining 45 other young actors and student directors chosen from the 2015 SGCNZ Regional and National University of Otago Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festivals,

winners of the SGCNZ/Bernina Shakespeare Costume Design Competition and SGCNZ/Morrison Music Trust Shakespeare Music Composition Competition.

“Shwetha impressed us all with her conviction and strength of character in the role of the Queen in the Scots College scenes from Cymbeline,” says Dawn Saunders SGCNZ CEO and Trustee.

Shwetha says, “I’ve been doing speech and drama for years” and she also hopes to join an acting club in University to further her skill set, and build on her experience with SGCNZ.

Melbourne Cup coming to Wellington

Horse racing fans might be interested to hear that this year the famous Emirates Melbourne Cup is going on tour, a packed tour taking in 33 destinations including Wellington. This week The Victoria Racing Club [VRC] announced that Wellington would join four New Zealand destinations in hosting the impressive $175,000, 18-carat gold Emirates Melbourne Cup or ‘People’s Cup’.

It’s National Volunteer Awareness Week and Enliven, part of the not-for-profit organisation Presbyterian Support Central, is looking for people to volunteer at their rest homes and retirement villages.

Alex and Robert, both aged 17, say volunteering gives them the chance to give back while meeting new people at the same time.

While each volunteer role is different, Alex and Robert visit Enliven’s Huntleigh Retirement Apartments in Karori every Friday evening to fetch drinks, dish out finger food and mingle with residents, Robert explains.

“We started volunteering here because of Duke of Edinburgh but then we stayed on because we have no reason to stop,” says Robert.

“Everyone likes us coming along and it’s interesting speaking to another generation that isn’t your own family.”

Alex has volunteered at Huntleigh Apartments for three years and says the social aspect keeps him coming back.

“You get to know people; it’s good fun and gives me something to do, otherwise I’d probably just sit on the couch watching television.”

Alex says he and Robert enjoy getting to know the residents and hearing their

stories.

“There was a man here who I’d chat with every week. He was a war veteran and he had all these stories to tell. You really get to know their life stories,” says Alex.

“He was like a grandfather to me and I just had a natural connection with him.

It was really hard when he passed away about a month ago.”

Huntleigh Home recreation officer Gwen Esler says it is natural for volunteers to build friendships with the residents and Alex had formed a special bond.

“Alex visited him in hospital and when he died Alex was asked to be a pall bearer at his funeral,” says Gwen.

“It’s obvious that they’re not simply volunteers; they become part of the family.”

Enliven operates rest homes and retirement villages across the lower North Island including Cashmere Home and Cashmere Heights Home in Johnsonville, Longview Home in Tawa and Huntleigh Home and Apartments in Karori.

Karori Community Patrol

Karori Community Patrol are making the community safer one crime at a time.

The aim of the patrol is to be a visible presence on the streets, assisting the police to make a difference and reduce anything from graffiti, theft and assaults to more serious crimes. The patrol acts as additional eyes and ears for the police, reporting suspicious behaviour to the Police. The patrol also liaises very closely with the Wellington City Council and other community patrols in Wellington.

MEALS ON WHEELS We provides a valuable service to members of the community who struggle to prepare nutritious meals for themselves.

We are always in need of volunteer drivers to deliver these meals anywhere in the Wellington area from Karori to Seatoun, Northland to Island Bay. Meals will be ready to be picked up by drivers from 10.45 (at Wellington Hospital) 11am (Miramar) 11.30 Brooklyn and 12 noon from Karori. Most of the routes take around half an hour (or less) and maps can be provided.

Multitalented in Marsden

Bria Renai is a Year 11 student at Samuel Marsden and a multitalented Marsden native. Bria is a singing, dancing and flute playing extraordinaire. She was selected to join the National Secondary Schools’ Choir, auditioned for the Wellington Youth Sinfonietta, playing the flute, she was also selected for the Tania Pearson Ballet Academy in Sydney, and to top it all off Bria won three awards in the Jennifer Evans Ballet Academy Choreographic competition recently.

“I’ve been doing ballet my whole life; I started when I was 2 years old.

I dance with Jennifer Evans Ballet Academy in Kaori,” says Bria.

Last week was an exciting one for New World employees Claire MacPhail from Thorndon and Janine Tapelu from Khandallah who came 9th and 12th respectively in the Foodstuffs North Island Checker of the Year.

The event saw over 100 checkout operators from PAK’nSAVE and New World stores in the region put through their paces and Wellington’s top checkout operators were recognised at the St. James Theatre.

Checker’s skills were tested across the board; speed, presentation, customer service and accuracy under pressure. The final judgement came down to a team of eight judges from Foodstuffs who carefully selected the overall winner, Civic Cruz from New

World Carterton.

“Our Checker of the Year competition has been going for over 40 years, and is a fun night for checkers to demonstrate their fantastic customer service skills and engage in a bit of friendly competition with other stores,” says event organiser Kristie McGregor.

Kristie also added, “This event is a great way to recognise and reward our checkers for the value they add to the customer experience.”

It was indeed a fun filled night and colleagues of the finalists wore costumes, cheered and waved banners in support. The Thorndon store supporters all dressed true to the evening’s ‘Kiwiana’ theme as buzzy bees.

The Karori Rotary Club along with ANZ held a breakfast meeting in Karori Park Cafe this week.

Cameron Bagrie, Chief Economist for ANZ, was on hand to speak candidly and honestly about a variety of topics, touching on the Auckland housing crisis, the dairy industry, but also the smaller picture and the dynamics impacting on the economy.

Cameron created a clear picture of the misconceptions about New Zealand’s current economy, the myths and follies and his

thoughts of the importance of education for the next generation and forecasting for the future.

Cameron has worked as an Economist in New Zealand for over 15 years, and was formerly an economist at the National Bank and the New Zealand Treasury.

This was the fifth in a series of talks organised by Rotary Karori members. It’s an opportunity to hear from leaders in their field, to socialise and network.

Almost 50 people were registered to attend, which was another great turnout for the event series.

She performed the piece on the stage at Victoria University, where the choreography competition took place.

Bria is also in every choir at the school, and does grades in the flute. “I’m up to Grade 6,” she says.

When asked why she chose to play the flute, Bria explained, “I wanted to be different. I love the sound, it’s such a nice instrument to play and it’s rewarding for others listening.”

Playing, singing and dancing Bria still manages to balance all her school work.

“I manage to keep up, I stay organised with timetables.”

Not surprisingly Bria hopes to study Performing Arts in the future. She’s aiming high and hopes to score a Scholarship to Juilliard in New York and sees herself making the grand jeté into the world of theatre, singing, playing or acting there.

Good news for Kaori as the Events Centre is one step closer to coming to fruition.

The Council’s Governance, Finance and Planning Committee has resolved to sell the St. John's Hall site on the corner of Campbell Street and Karori Road.

Local Councillor Sa ra h Free, Community Facilities Portfolio leader, understands that some residents may be sad to see the old hall go, but recognises that it is part of an overall plan for the future of the community. "The old hall is earthquake prone and would need expensive repairs.

The Karori Community Hall Trust has been working for several years on plans for a

purpose built hall adjacent to the community centre and have fundraised most of what they need, which will include proceeds from this sale. It is important to note that the disposal process will include appropriate community consultation and finding other alternative venues for groups currently using the old hall," she says.

Cr. Free hopes the Karori community will now rally around and help fundraise for the remaining money for the new events centre. "I would really like to acknowledge Wally Simmers, who has chaired the Trust for several years, before finally retiring this year. The Trust has lots of new energetic people, but they need the community to step up now

and help make the Centre a reality. It will be a great asset for Karori."

Deputy Mayor and Chairperson for the Governance, Finance and Planning Committee, Justin Lester, explains that the Council acquired the St. John’s Hall site in 2000 but it’s now surplus to requirements, saying, “With things gathering pace with the planning and development of the Karori Events Centre, now is a good time for a developer with vision to step up and turn this site into an attractive addition to the suburb.”

The 1,020 metres squared site will be advertised for sale in August, and will ideally be sold to a developer who would demolish the hall and redevelop the site.

Life of Pie

There’s still time to immunise

The ‘flu (or Influenza) season is upon us. The usual symptoms include high temperature, achy muscles, chills, shivering, sore throat and coughs.

Brenda Saunders, Communications, National Influenza Specialist Group (NSIG) and Louise Lewis, Immunisation Facilitator/Coordinator for Capital and Coast District Health Board (CCDHB) says “people often confuse colds with ‘flu. Influenza is a serious illness and usually lasts 7-10 days.”

The easily accessible and free ‘Healthline’ has noted more people are well at the moment compared with this time last year. However Robyn Taylor, nurse manager at Karori Medical Centre has said that ‘flu season had not kicked in fully yet explaining, “We’ve had a pretty nice winter so far.”

Importantly, ‘Healthline’ have pointed out that it was a choice to get the immunisation and the immunisation did not cover all types of ‘flu, it only takes being in contact with someone with the ‘flu to get it.

suggests, “While health professionals can only recommend how to keep healthy you get to choose what it will take to keep your family healthy.”

Karori Medical Centre currently has a drive to protect its patients as well as its staff through immunisation. They know first-hand how ‘flu can be deadly - one of its own patients died of ‘flu related causes in the last five years.

Johnsonville and Karori Medical Centres are currently focused on getting pregnant women immunised “[the ‘flu injection] is free for them” says Penny Nel practice nurse manager of Johnsonville Medical Centre.

Khandallah Medical Centre is encouraging ‘flu vaccination especially amongst the elderly who have a greater potential illness. The centre looks at an individual child and decides alongside its parents the best course of action for that child.

Brooke Robinson from Year 6 in Paparangi School has been a very busy lady playing her part to raise funds for those in need in Nepal.

Brooke, 10, set about raising funds by selling pies from her dad's pie shop, Jesters, at her school. Part of the cost went to towards the Nepal earthquake fund.

Despite her age Brooke was eager to help and says, “I wanted to raise funds for the earthquake. My parents own a pie shop in Johnsonville. A [sister] shop up in Auckland helped start the fundraiser for schools. 10% of the money goes towards Nepal,” says Brooke.

“There was a form that went home a couple of weeks ago and people could order a box of four pies that they wanted,” Brooke explained.

Student‘s at the school were able to help Nepal while also satisfying their taste buds with the 'Kiwi Classic' and spicy ‘Maharaja’ to the veggie lover’s ‘Popeye’ pies from the store. When asked her favourite pie Brooke says, “The ‘William Pie’, it’s apple, cinnamon and custard.”

“On Friday my dad and mum brought down the pies and people could collect their order. “Each box had four pies in it with one flavour,” says Brooke.

“We raised lots of money, and my class sold the most pies so we get a party pie on Monday, my mum is going to bring us in a pie each,” she said.

Brooke says she was sad to hear about the earthquake in Nepal and wanted to help out in some way, and that she enjoyed the fundraiser and would love to do it again.

Speaking about the fundraiser, Principal Susan Blyther says, “Brooke’s father has just

taken over the pie shop and said they would give part of the cost to Nepal.”

Susan explained that the school had done some fundraising in the school already where students were asked to wear the colours of Nepal and donate.

bedroom only for sleeping. Don’t watch TV in bed, or do work in the bedroom, if sleep eludes you. And don’t stay in bed reading or generally lying in. Your mind and body need to know that “bed means sleep”, and nothing else. Keeping to this policy, and being consistent about the time you go to bed and wake up, can bring about improvements in sleep patterns.

Sleep problems can be caused by a number of things: • Temperature of the room is too hot or too cold, or the room is not well ventilated • Too much noise around the bedroom area • Certain medicines that can keep you awake if you take them too close to bedtime • Drinking too much coffee, or other beverages containing caffeine (e.g. tea and V) around bedtime • Feeling pain due to a chronic illness • If you take work or family/personal pressures and stresses to bed with you.

Trying to identify what is causing sleep problems is the first step to overcoming them. Worrying about not sleeping usually makes it worse. But remember, the amount of sleep needed varies from person to person, and generally our requirements decrease with age.

Here are some things you can do to help you sleep well: • Avoid naps during the day

• At night-time avoid taking stimulant medicines (e.g. phenylephrine which is found in most cold preparations) which can keep you awake • Ask your pharmacist about other medicines you are taking that might be the cause of your poor sleep • At bed-time avoid drinks that contain caffeine • Avoid drinking large quantities of fluids because of the effect on your bladder during the night • Before bed-time listen to soft music or read light-hearted books that can help you relax • Get some exercise during the day so your body is tired and ready for rest at night • Give yourself time in the evening to wind down before bed – try relaxation breathing exercises, or meditation.

High School Musical gets the Marsden treatment as this year’s production takes to the stage June 22-25.

Not ones for sticking to the status quo the students at Samuel Marsden and Wellington College are breaking free and embracing the roles, popularized

by Vanessa Hudgens and Zac Efron.

Lara Strong might only be in Year 11, but she’s taken on the lead role in style playing Gabriella.

“I always wanted to play Gabriella. I sang ‘Breaking Free’ in the audition, it’s typical but I love that song,” says Lara.

“I was surprised when I got it though. I was pretty happy, I wasn’t expecting it.

I spent a lot of time rehears-

ing, bouncing lines off my dad. He and my mum have been giving me tips,” she added.

“It’s been so much fun, the whole cast are happy to help each other out, it’s a good cast, so talented,” says Lara.

Maddie Whyte who is a Year 12 student at the school explains that she auditioned for the role of Sharpay and got it. “I wanted her from the start.

She’s a lot of fun to play. I love both singing and acting so it’s a great combo. I get to dance a lot too so it’s the whole package,” says Maddie about her role.

Georgia Burns is delighted to have scored the role of Ryan. Despite playing a boy Georgia says the character reflects her personality best. “I wanted to

audition for Ryan, but they originally said no. Then in audition they asked me to read for Ryan and I did and it’s turned out really well. It fits in with my personality, plus I’ve a low voice which helps,” says Georgia.

Then there is Troy, played

by Wellington College student Isaac Anderson. Isaac is one of seven guys in the cast and explains the audition process that secured him his lead role, “There was a singing and acting audition, then a dancing audition at Marsden, dancing is my weakest link, I’m not a dancer. My singing and acting is my strong suit.”

Recent Victoria University graduate Dylan Chambers scooped the 2015 New Zealand France Friendship Fund Excellence Scholarship.

The former Onslow College student was awarded $25,000 to undertake a Masters in International Public Management at the Sciences Po Paris School of International Affairs.

The postgraduate degree, which will be taught

th rough both French and English, and is an internationally competitive programme, will be conducted by a number of leading experts and professionals.

Professor Stephen Levine of Victoria University's Political Science and International Relations programme explained that Dylan is “one of the top students to go through the Honours programme in the last 15 years.”

The accolades just keep coming for Dylan, when

earlier this year, he was selected as the most outstanding Parliamentary intern of 2014 and received the Speaker’s Prize from the Speaker of the House, The Rt. Hon. David Carter.

It seems Dylan’s love of French language and culture began with French classes in Onslow College.

Wellington Free Ambulance is celebrating volunteer week by shining a light on their integral volunteers. Integral staff like Elizabeth Mos, 24, from Broadmeadows who plays a pivotal role with the ambulance service.

Elizabeth is passionate about helping her community and volunteers with Wellington Free Ambulance week on week.

“I was born and bred in Wellington, and I’ve had to call Wellington Free Ambulance a few times before, so I have memories of them from when I was a child,” says Elizabeth.

“Before I became a volunteer event medic, I had also helped out with the annual appeal and fundraising. Taking it further just seemed like a great thing to do,” she added.

The charitable organisation is locally owned and governed and help to provide the best paramedic care, when you dial 111 they’re the ones who pick up the receiver every time. Paramedics with the organisation like Elizabeth respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, seven days a

week, 365 days a year.

They respond to road crashes and construction site accidents, but also are available to those seriously sick or injured.

Elizabeth also works full time as a community compliance officer for IRD, yet still manages to volunteer for at least two shifts a week.

“I pull some pretty huge hours, but it’s purely because I enjoy it. I love being in the community and selling the service.

It’s an opportunity to have one-on-one time with people, and tell them what we’re about,” says Elizabeth.

The Free Ambulance works in conjunction with Westpac Rescue Helicopter and with the New Zealand Fire Service and Police to ensure people can be helped, no matter where they are.

Elizabeth says, “It’s great knowing that in a medical emergency or even for more minor incidents I would be able to assist until a qualified paramedic arrived. I just really enjoy doing something different. I love the people and interaction, as well as the medical side – it’s knowing I’m making a real difference and giving back to my community.”

Johnsonville Neighbourhood Watch In Johnsonville a Honda Prelude parked in Disraeli was broken into via a jemmied passenger side door lock and a radar detector was stolen.

CCTV footage covering the incident has been passed to Police.

In Newlands a house in Robert Street was entered, probably through a forced laundry window, and some jewellery items taken. An attempt was made to steal a Subaru Forester parked in Jane Grove. The rear passenger side door was forced open and the ignition pulled out. The attempt was abandoned but some loose change was taken.

In Khandallah the garage door of a house in Homebush Road was forced and jammed in a half open position.

It is not yet known if anything was stolen. A Ford Ranger parked in Punjab Street had its left rear window

smashed to gain entry and a gym bag with gym clothing was stolen. In Rama Crescent a white Toyota Corolla was broken into via a forced passenger side door lock. A computer bag containing a Tablet and a calculator was stolen.

In Ngaio a Subaru Legacy station wagon parked in Tarikaka Street was stolen and later found abandoned in Cockayne Road.

In Churton Park a house in Anaheim Place which had been left locked and secured was entered although no sign of force was found. The intruder left signs of numerous items being disturbed but nothing is reported stolen.

A contractor’s container left at the corner of Middleton Road and Rowells Road in Glenside was entered when offenders cut the padlock on the door.

Twenty hand held radios, a first aid kit and coffee and sugar were stolen.

It’s possible to lead a cow upstairs… but not downstairs.

Representing New Zealand

Avia Murray has good reason to smile this week as she has recently made the cut for New Zealand's Under 17 Water polo team. Not a small feat when the Queen Margaret College, Thorndon, student is just 15 years old.

Avia is a relative newcomer to the sport, “I’ve been playing for four years now. I play for the Senior A team at the school and for Harbour City Hawks Club team,” she says.

Last weekend the teen trialled along with two other Wellington girls at the national trials in Auckland. At the trials Avia impressed and was asked to compete in a tournament in Brisbane next month as part of the New Zealand squad. Fellow Wellingtonians Ciara Flynn and Elisa Dunne also made the team.

The place on the squad was well earned. “I train four times a week for two or three hours after school. We do one hour dry land training, then one hour swimming and one hour practicing passing, games and drills,” says Avia.

“We train in a deep pool, so you can’t touch the bottom so you tread water. The aim is to put the ball in the goal. It’s a contact sport with six on each team, the goalie and five players,” Avia explains.

Avia is kicking off the season playing the Tournament in Brisbane in July against teams from around the world. Then Avia plans to play the season next term with her school and club, so it’s a busy time of the year. When asked what the next step for her was, Avia says, “I hope to keep playing and improving.”

Wellington needs to host more major sporting events Wellington needs to do more to attract major international sporting events to improve Kiwi companies’ international competitive advantage, says tech company Origin CEO Michael Russell. His company won a tender to provide information technology services for the FIFA Under 20 World Cup tournament recently.

“There is a need to make our country more attractive to

these massive events in terms of our infrastructure, and for the government to partner with New Zealand businesses to offer a world class experience here,” added Michael.

“Cities like Wellington need to look beyond the pure financial outcomes of a specific event to recognise the inherent benefits in the learning and experience and that can be made from hosting these fixtures on our home soil.”

“Events like these demand international standards of

service from local companies, and while it can be a challenge to meet those benchmarks, it’s one we should be embracing as it places New Zealand on an equal footing with globally recognised hosts of major events,” Michael added.

In total 52 matches were played throughout the tournament including Wellington and worldwide television audiences of more than 170200 million people in more than 100 countries tuned in.

Rugby In the Hardham Cup Premier 2, Round 3 match Johnsonville took an impressive victory beating Avalon 38-13. This leaves Johnsonville second in the league behind the Upper Hutt Rams. A great performance and return to form following their late loss to Poneke last week.
