Locals encouraged to drop by diabetes stall Diabetes Awareness Week has rolled around, and from today until November 14, Diabetes Kapiti Branch is participating in the nationwide project and setting up a stall in Coastlands. As part of Diabetes New Zealand, a notfor-profit organisation with 28 branches nationwide and 8000 members, Diabetes Kapiti Branch is a non-governmental division that works to support diabetics and their families living on the coast. Encouraging locals to drop by and ask questions at the stall this week, Diabetes Kapiti Branch volunteers will be on hand to offer information about recognising and assisting diabetics. As well as holding monthly support
group meetings, Diabetes Kapiti Branch offers services including weekly exercise classes, supermarket tours, and access to diet and nutrition information. The support group, which runs on the second Wednesday of every month except for January, is held from 1pm to 2.30pm at the Te Newhanga Kapiti Community Centre, located at 15 Ngahina St, Paraparaumu. The group offers the opportunity to talk with other people with similar experiences and issues relating to their diabetes, and anyone is welcome. ■ To contact Diabetes Kapiti Branch, phone (04) 904 4125.
