Councillor Lloyd dies DAVID HAXTON A by-election will take place soon for a new Waikanae ward councillor following the untimely death of Tony Lloyd. Mr Lloyd, 67, died in Wellington Hospital on Sunday following a stroke on Thursday. On Wednesday he had a successful hip replacement operation. “According to the experts, they don’t think the hip operation and stroke were related — it was just one of those things,” Kapiti Mayor Ross Church said. “It’s a sad time and we’re going to do what we can to support his wife Jill and the family.” Mr Church said Mr Lloyd was a dedicated and hardworking councillor who was a strong advocate for the Waikanae ward and for the
goals and aspirations of the wider Kapiti district. Mr Lloyd was serving his second term as a councillor after serving 15 years on the Waikanae Community Board. He was chairman of council’s appeals committee, deputy chairman of the regulatory management committee, deputy chairman of the grants allocation subcommittee, a councillor appointed to the Waikanae Community Board, a member of the property subcommittee, was on the Pharazyn Reserve management committee and the Kapiti Accessibility Advisory group. “Tony was the perfect choice for chair of the appeals committee because of his caring, calm, considerate manner,” Mr Church said. “He was such a gentleman and the ideal man to make decisions that required

consideration and compassion. “Tony’s untimely death has rocked us all. “He was popular FAREWELL: around Tony Lloyd the council table as well as in the community and he will be sadly missed.” Chief executive Pat Dougherty said council staff would also miss the steady influence of Mr Lloyd. “Tony treated everyone with courtesy and consideration. “He had a great sense of humour and a ready smile. “Tony made a huge contribution to Waikanae, in

particular and his premature passing is a great loss. Waikanae Community Board chairman Michael Scott said “Tony’s humanity will be sadly missed around the council table”. “He brought with him a level of commonsense and decency which on occasions has been lacking around our council table.” He said Mr Lloyd was always prepared for various meetings and was always in a position to answer a question. Mr Lloyd had lived on the coast for a number of decades had been deeply involved in the community. “He brought up his own family and substantially brought up Jill’s two boys too,” Mr Scott said. Mr Lloyd’s funeral is tomorrow at the St Patrick’s Catholic Church, Hinemoa St, Paraparaumu, at 1pm.
