A hurdle for centre DAVID HAXTON Wellington Regional Council is keen for the Kapiti Equestrian and Vaulting Centre, which shot to fame with its ninth placing in the World Equestrian Games, to relocate its base. At an environment and community development committee meeting on Thursday, Cr Tony Lloyd said Wellington Regional Council staff gave a presentation at the latest Waikanae Community Board meeting about stopbank work along the Waikanae River. “The issue was raised in relation to the equestrian centre, which is currently within the river corridor. “They are of a view that it [the equestrian centre] needs to move, they appear to be of the view that it needs to be out

of the river corridor, and the inference I got from their comments was that this is a matter that should be taken over by Kapiti Coast District Council and we should be sorting out where the equestrian centre should go. “It does not sit well with me, and I don’t believe it sits well with the rest of the community board, and I believe some of the other councillors here are of the same view.” Council chief executive Pat Dougherty said the issue had been raised with the regional council some months ago who had suggested the club move across the river to the council owned Howarth Block. “Our response was that if the equestrian centre needs to be relocated then that’s a cost of the regional council project. “They should be buying the

land from the equestrian centre and then helping them find another site. “Any suggestion the equestrian centre moves on to the Howarth Block is effectively moving part of the cost of the regional council project on to the district council. “And we were absolutely emphatic that was not acceptable and nor was it acceptable that part of the land that we have now established as a reserve should be allocated for private use. “That’s been the very clear message we’ve conveyed back to the regional council at the highest level. “But yes we’re aware of a continued push to transfer some of the cost of the project onto the district council and we will continue to resist

that,” he said. He was meeting the new regional council chief executive and was going to emphasise the need for the regional council to “adequately fund this stopbank project and part of that is land purchase”. “We’ve also suggested the Transport Agency probably has quite a bit of land for sale and gave them contact details about who they should be talking too but that doesn’t seem to have got anywhere.” Cr Mike Cardiff said the issue had nothing to do with council. “And I would be very against any suggestion that any sort of private activity is transferred on to our public reserve.” Glenn McIntyre, from the equestrian centre, said he would comment next week.

EARLY BIRD

IN BRIEF RIVER VISION

A revised Waikanae River strategy has been endorsed by council’s environment and community development committee. The strategy, which is a combined effort between Wellington Regional Council, Kapiti Coast District Council, Department of Conservation, Te Atiawa ki Whakarongotai, Friends of the Waikanae River and others, is intended to assist and co-ordinate the efforts those are making to protect and improve the river environment from the water treatment plant to the river mouth, including the estuary. “It presents an agreed vision and objectives that the different parties can work towards,” it says. “The strategy is a long-term plan that can be realised in stages. “It is intended to be flexible, relying on the goodwill and co-operation of the agencies and stakeholders involved.”

A report critical of council’s support for the Clean Technology Trust has been temporarily removed from council’s website. “Since the release to councillors, the author [Tanner Ritchie and Co] has received feedback from interested parties and is updating the report,” a spokeswoman said. “Once that has happened, it will be back up on the website.”

Wild Appetite new 250ml sauces with a wick, come in a range of three Hot AS, Wild AS & Sweet As, are available from participating supermarkets, specialty food stores and gift stores nationwide. ‘Explosive, exotic and exciting’ is how Peter McCracken & his product development team describe their new culinary & gift range Chilli Sauces with novelty wick. ‘This new range will unleash the flavours in a wide range of meals’ continues Peter.

Fire-damaged school bounces back DAVID HAXTON Pupils displaced at Paraparaumu School, because of the recent fire that destroyed four classrooms and a library, will be back fulltime at the start of term four. Three classrooms of pupils have been going to nearby St Patrick’s School, while five surplus temporary classrooms from Upper Hutt, Palmerston North and Wanganui were sourced, brought to the school and positioned on the school field. Principal Steven Caldwell said pupils from four classrooms had remained at the school. “I’m really looking forward to having the whole school back together.” The design process for the new block will be underway soon. “I”m going up to Auckland next term to look at some rebuilds. “A couple of schools have had to rebuild because of fire. “That will give me some good information to start the design process. “I’ll be talking to the teachers and the students in those schools so we can pull in the best things and then sit down with the Ministry of Education and start designing. “We have quite a say in terms of what we want. “Each school is different and there’s lots of different ways to

We’ve got a long road to go down, but the end product is going to be awesome for this school.

orientate classrooms. “It won’t be a traditional block of classrooms that you see in most schools.” Mr Caldwell said the mood in the school was positive and everyone had shown a lot of resilience. “Just looking to the future. “We’ve got a long road to go

down, but the end product is going to be awesome for this school.” Donations to the school had been amazing. “We’ve so far totalled over 500 individual donations from monetary to stationary to books to teaching resources. “We’re also keen to thank

those people, so we’re dreaming up ideas about how to do that. “I’ve had to hire a parent for 10 hours a week just to do things on the fire.” He said the donations would enable the school to restock and maybe provide a few extras. While the fire had caused a lot of heartache, the rebuild

presented an opportunity. “We have to make the most of it.” A large scar, bandaged by gravel and surrounded by metal fencing, remains where the destroyed block was, but plans are in place to asphalt the area as soon as possible, which will create a large playing area.

Scientific reserve out of bounds for vehicles DAVID HAXTON The issue of people driving vehicles into the nationally significant Waikanae Estuary Scientific Reserve will be addressed after the whitebaiting season, Department of Conservation Kapiti Wellington area manager Rob Stone said. Vehicular access into the reserve isn’t allowed, because it’s a protected area, but has been

happening, especially during the whitebait season. The department has been talking with iwi, Kapiti Coast District Council and the whitebaiters about it. “The main thing is we’ll continue to enforce the whitebait regulations and we’re probably leaving the vehicles alone, provided people aren’t causing damage in there. “We will work with them to

address that after the season. “Our main driver is that it’s a scientific reserve with important plants and wildlife, and the dunes are very fragile, and we just want to make sure there’s no damage being done. “But we also understand that people have been going in there and using vehicles for some time during the whitebait season, so we need to talk to them and find a good result.”

He said, “technically” people weren’t allowed to drive into the reserve. “There’s a permit from Kapiti Coast District Council to allow them to drive up the beach, but that doesn’t give them automatic permission to enter the scientific reserve. “However, people have been doing things for a while and we accept that change takes a while to sort out and we’d rather inform

people and work with them. “It [this season] got off to a bumpy start, and we’ve acknowledged that, and we want to increase the amount of information people have got.” People were accessing the reserve from the north and south of the Waikanae River and “a lot of people probably don’t actually realise where the boundaries are, what the rules are, and how important that area is as well”.

Challenges amaze race contenders CLOE WILLETTS

AMAZING: Many teams, such as this one, dressed up for the Kapiti Amazing Race. PHOTO: JACK PENMAN / KAP150914SPLRED

The Kapiti Amazing Race ran for its third consecutive year between Paekakariki and Waikanae on Saturday, in an all-day clue hunt that raised almost $5000 for Waikanae Kindergarten. Twenty-seven teams of four fought it out in a playful series of mental and physical challenges, with 10 stop-off points scattered at various locations on the coast, including MenzShed in Waikanae. “Participants had to build a Department of Conservation stoat trap out of wood, which had been pre-cut by MenzShed members,” said co-organiser Rachael Bidwell, who was one of a group of Waikanae

Kindergarten parents to organise the colourful event. “There was also a stop-off at Kapiti Candies in Lindale, where teams had to taste six different candies and say what the flavours were, including a lavender flavoured candy that proved challenging.” With up to 40 businesses on board as sponsors, most of which were local, a range of spot prizes were distributed alongside prizes for first, second and third placements, and best dressed team. “Most teams dressed up because there was a prize for best costume, which went to the Nippy Nanas who were dressed as old ladies with walking sticks, teeth and petticoats.” With a timeframe of between two and five hours originally

planned for finishing the course, the event ended with longer completion times than expected. “That just meant people got more for their money and had a really fun, full day. “We were also really lucky the weather was fine.” The activity that proved most difficult during the race was a vigorous beach challenge, which involved running sea water up to a bucket on the beach, using only a small shot glass to fill it almost halfway. “Teams found that exhausting, but still a lot of fun. “Everyone had a fabulous time.” ■ Winging It won the race, Sore Winners were second, and Born in the 80s third.

Miss Universe contestant raises thousands for charity CLOE WILLETTS In preparation for tomorrow night’s big Auckland-based Miss Universe New Zealand event, Kapiti contestant Rachel Millns raised over $2000 during the busy pageant process. In the final stage of her hands-on fundraising efforts, Miss Millns organised a successful five-prize raffle draw, which included a $300 grocery grab from New World Waikanae. The locally-sponsored raffle initiative secured $1000 towards Miss Millns’ overall total, which will go to Miss Universe New Zealand’s chosen charity, Variety - The Children’s Charity. The lucky winner of last

Wednesday’s grocery grab was Waikanae pensioner Wickham Pack, who rallied 24 “big-ticket items” in five minutes. Ms Pack, whose selection included two large bags of cat biscuits for her cats Coco and Milo, a lemon tree, batteries, a couple of roasts and an electric toothbrush, said she was “over the moon” with her win. “When I told people over the phone about my win, I was also able to tell them a little about Variety. “It was nice to be able to push that message too,” said the keen volunteer worker, who fundraises for Amnesty International. Store grocery manager Richard Olsen said New World

Waikanae “likes to support the local community as much as possible”. “When it comes to our local suppliers or charities, we try and spread out the funds as much as we can.” Miss Millns, whose on-stage journey can be viewed live tomorrow night from 7.30pm on Sky Digital television channel Juice TV, would like to say “thank you so much” to the local businesses that contributed “and made this raffle possible”. “Thank you to New World Waikanae, Exhale Spa Raumati, I See Security and Communications in Lower Hutt, The Mad Butcher in Paraparaumu, and Shoreline Cinema in Waikanae.”

Mahara Gallery receives a $250,000 boost

CELEBRATING SPRING: Artist Ken Hunt with his seasonallyinspired painting Spring Has Sprung, which is one of a variety of his works set for display at the Rona Gallery in Eastbourne next month. PHOTO: CLOE WILLETTS / KAP120914CWSPRINGHASSPRUNG

Art captures attention CLOE WILLETTS Ken Hunt’s home studio is rimmed with different sized boxes rested against its walls, the basic cardboard casings hiding a collection of vibrant and strikingly life-like finished and unfinished works. Some of the Paraparaumu Beach-based artist’s stunning oil works sit in eye view at the front of hidden paintings that will never be viewed by the public, as secret commission pieces for big-budget clients. His studio shelves are full with a diverse collection of still-life objects that previously played roles in his paintings, in an assortment of butterflies, vases, crystals, dolls, shells and antique finds. Containing themes of inspiring landscapes, old masters, birdlife and portraiture, Hunt’s paintings have captured the attention of art enthusiasts around the

world, including his stunning series of sought-after Goldie renditions. The father-of-one, who last week donated a large-scale, prophecy-inspired piece to Paraparaumu’s Centre Church, also regularly fuses his devotion to Christianity in his works. Among Hunt’s most recent projects is a Kapiti-inspired beach piece titled Spring has Sprung, which is one of up to seven of his works set for

display at the October 2 Springthemed gallery re-launch exhibition at Rona Gallery, Eastbourne. Spring has Sprung, a notably detailed piece that emerged from Hunt’s admiration for watching boats go out on the water at Kapiti Boating Club, will add to the popular list of works displayed at Rona Gallery by Hunt in the past, as part of a longstanding collaboration. “I walk a block to the beach every morning and see these boats, and it’s always awesome on a still day because there are not too many waves, and you can see a line of them going out,” said Hunt. “Spring Has Sprung is really just about fond memories, and it’s quintessential Paraparaumu.” As well as painting the quiet settings and faces of Kapiti, Hunt has enjoyed larger-scale success, when in 1999 he was

commissioned by Three Foot Six Limited to paint four portraits to appear in The Lord of the Rings and The Fellowship of the Ring. Characterising Sir Peter Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh as hobbits Bungo Baggins and Belladonna Took, Hunt was “sworn to secrecy”, and has “only just received permission from the Lord of the Rings publicist to talk about my involvement”. Hunt’s long-standing career flourished over time, in what followed a seven-year stint in a monastery where he was “kicked out for getting tattoos”. “At the time, it meant you couldn’t find work if you had tattoos, and my father said, ‘that’s it, you’ll never get a job’,” said Hunt, who calls himself the “black sheep of the family”. “So at the time, I wondered what I could do, and decided I’d be an artist.”

The Wellington Community Trust has given $250,000 towards the Mahara Gallery redevelopment project, which will see the gallery’s building upgraded and give Kapiti a district gallery to complement other cultural institutions in the Wellington region. “Mahara Gallery is thrilled to have the Wellington Community Trust on board with this project,” Mahara Gallery Trust chairman John Mowbray said. The donation from the Wellington Community Trust recognises the significance of what the redeveloped gallery will offer the Kapiti district and Wellington region. “Having this support from the trust is a great endorsement of our goal,” Mowbray said. The project will see the gallery’s exhibition spaces trebled, creating more room to display the work of local Kapiti artists and to host larger touring exhibitions. The redeveloped gallery will complement other public galleries and museums in the greater Wellington region, such as Pataka and The Dowse, said Mowbray. “Wellington Community Trust is committed to enhancing the Wellington region’s reputation as the arts and cultural heart of New Zealand and supports projects which develop our arts infrastructure and retain and grow New Zealand’s iconic arts institutions in the region,” trust acting chairwoman Dawn Sanders said. “The Mahara Gallery project ticked many of our boxes.” Mahara Gallery has been given the rare opportunity to house the Field Collection, a collection of artworks by Frances Hodgkins and other famous New Zealand artists. Currently in private ownership, it is being offered to the public gallery on the condition that it upgrades its building to a museum-standard facility suitable for fragile artworks. Kapiti Coast District Council has committed $1.5 million to the project, which includes a commitment from the Waikanae Community Board, on the proviso that Mahara Gallery will raise the other twothirds of the funds needed for the upgrade project. Including the council commitment, the donation from the Wellington Community Trust takes Mahara Gallery over halfway towards its target. The redevelopment is scheduled to happen in tandem with the adjacent Waikanae Library upgrade.

Praise for Coastlands Aquatic Centre Something happened recently that gave us all at council a sense of achievement and appreciation. It was an email from a Wairarapa resident Ruth about her first visit, with her specialneeds son, to the Coastlands Aquatic Centre. “The facility was spotless and the family changing rooms were roomy and well-appointed for families with special needs . . . We enjoyed the warm, dry environment, the excellent lighting, the low noise level and the fascinating roofline. The complex was easy to find and we had the choice of car parks. The staff were welcoming, knowledgeable and helpful,” said Ruth.

Ruth explained she was a competitive swimmer and national water polo player, taught swimming for nearly 50 years and is involved with Special Olympics. She has visited many swimming pools in her time. “Yours, without a doubt, has got to be one of the best. Congratulations to everyone involved with the concept, design, building and running of it. See you all again soon!”

I appreciate that Ruth took the time to write to the Coastlands Aquatic Centre staff with her impressions. It always gives people a boost to know they are doing a good job and sometimes we need to see what we have achieved through the eyes of others to really appreciate it. Especially as there have been concerns about disability access into the main pool. Council listened and responded by providing a removable ramp. We have had tremendous feedback from disabled users, who regularly use the pool, that the centre more than caters for their needs. Comments from the majority

of disabled pool users mirror those of Ruth. However, I suspect this will not not stop council being criticised for something that happened three years ago. A lobby group has obtained a decision from the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment that council shouldn’t have granted building consent for the pool complex back in 2011 because it didn’t then include a ramp. We accept that decision. Since then, we have improved our building consent procedures, which have been audited and passed by International Accreditation New Zealand (IANZ). Plus, the ramp is now

installed in addition to a hoist, which we put in place prior to the centre’s opening. We can look back three years and rake over past failings, or we can look forward positively and reflect on what we have — a good-looking, versatile aquatic centre that caters for everyone from the elderly and infirm to babies and elite swimmers. We believe that with the ramp and hoists, and the caring attitude of staff, the vast majority of disabled people feel we are servicing their needs. Ruth’s message suggests we are doing so. Thanks, Ruth, for your positive and uplifting message — and for reminding us what we, as a community, have achieved.

Meter a ticking box from the past I was four when I first met the ticking box. My father, a civil servant with the Malaysian government, was promoted and a state house came with that. The new house had a water meter. The old thatch-roof house was serviced with a well. A long rope attached to a metal pail was lowered to draw the water out. I remember it because, once in a blue moon, the pail would capture a black catfish. My father had put it in the well to feed on the mosquito larvae. There was always a commotion when that useful guest of the deep black yonder was drawn out, looked at and prodded,

before being cast back into that darkness. At the new brick house, water arrived like magic at the turn of the tap. I discovered the ticking box very early, tucked away in the backyard, amongst the banana trees. When my mother was doing the washing the ticking was so fast that it would almost sing. The seclusion of the ticking box site made it an ideal meeting place for the neighbouring kids. It was

actually an almost oval, metal contraption, attached at the top end of a loop of piping sticking above the ground. It had a glass window through which we could see dials and numbers. Looking back, the singing box was a soothing reassurance of family life. I never connected that with the disagreeable noises my father made every month about the water bill. He had 10 children to support on the salary of a minor civil servant. In March this year, I got my first water bill. It registered a daily average use of 1918 litres. My second bill in May registered 2234 litres. Our household consist of just Claire and myself,

and our teenage son, Ari. The bill was registering an upper level average daily use for a family of 14! It was clear that the system had a significant leak. Over the phone Harold the plumber talked me though a step by step process. Over two weeks I did everything to locate the leak. Then came the next set of instructions: “grab a torch and crawl under the house”. I baulked. I recognised the fear. As a kid I had crawled into a stormwater drain while playing and got stuck. It was the most frightening experience. I managed to get out but it had

scarred me for life. It took me a few weeks but I finally made the move to crawl under the house. Luckily, just a metre into the harrowing ordeal, I heard the trickling sound and the torch picked out the valve under the floor where the hot water cylinder sat. The plumber did the rest. Fixing that leak did me a lot of good. It was not just about reducing my water bill or saving ratepayers from the cost of infrastructure upgrades. It was more personal. It was about facing a visceral fear. Once in a blue moon I think about that catfish. The poor bugger never had that choice.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR

No proof of pure grey ducks

I challenge Derek Schulz’s reference to rare native grey ducks, or parera, (Kapiti News, September 10). The wild ducks in Kapiti, as in the rest of New Zealand, are all a mixed-bred lot, resulting from many generations of grey and mallard ducks inter-breeding. Right from 1870 to the 1930s, mallards were irresponsibly released in their thousands. So began the production of the vigorous mongrel population that we have today. As with all hybrids, there will always be the odd few that have phenotypes resembling one of the original pure breeds. This does not make them pure grey ducks. DNA tests would prove this. One only needs to surf the net to find that there are no proven pure grey ducks left in New Zealand. NZ Transport Agency should not be inconvenienced in any way for such ducks and should demand proof of their purity and right to be classed as endangered. MALCOLM THORPE Otaki

Expressway could be downgraded

Labour Party policy is to reevaluate the Kapiti Expressway design. In an attempt to find out what this may mean in practice, I wrote to David Cunliffe’s office and asked if the policy could mean that the expressway is reduced to a twolane road with a speed limit of less than 100km/h. The reply I received indicated that this was yet to be determined by the review. This means it it is possible the

expressway could be downgraded under a Labour-led government, and I think that voters should be aware of this. ROBERT KING Paraparaumu

Children left to suffer

As a child living in New Zealand, it concerns me that there are many children who don’t have enough to eat and are living in poverty. I don’t think the National Party are doing their part in solving this problem. I am worried that, in the future, if National stays in power, this problem will increase. Charities are having to step in and feed children at school because their parents are so poorly paid. I hope the adults of New Zealand will think carefully about this issue when they make their vote on September 20. LARA ZAMPESE, 9 Paraparaumu Beach

Waste enters food chain

The Ministry of Primary Industry (MPI) has found petrochemicals in milk collected from oil and gas landfarms in Taranaki. The tests clearly show petroleum industry waste has entered the New Zealand food chain. MPI say it is not a problem because the levels of contaminates found in the milk they tested were low. Frack Free Kapiti wants milk and all other foods produced in New Zealand to be totally free from petrochemicals and dangerous wastes produced by the oil and gas industry. As the Minister for Primary

Industries, Nathan Guy is seeking re-election in the Otaki electorate. Frack Free Kapiti believes in standing to represent Otaki. Mr Guy must also stand and protect our food source and the production of that food from known threats. Can Mr Guy assure our community, prior to the election, that the collection of milk from ‘landfarms’ known to produce contaminated product will be stopped immediately? And that fracking in New Zealand will be banned, because we are a small country heavilydepend on food production and our clean, green image, both of which are under serious threat by the oil and gas industry’s new-age, untested technology (aka fracking)? Frack Free Kapiti made an appointment to meet and discuss these issues with the minister, but he cancelled the meeting and, to date, has been unable to offer an alternative appointment. For this reason, we now present our concerns in an open letter to our minister and representative. JEAN KAHUI Waikanae

Prerequisites for my vote

Wealth trickle-down never works. If his party seriously addressed man-made climate change. We used to take the lead on international issues. If his party admitted that charter schools have been a failure, as many of us predicted they would be, closing existing schools and issuing no further charters. These schools allow people with agendas, other than education, to promote their often crazy far-right views. If he declared his support for our becoming a republic with a New Zealand head of state. The governor-general could initially act as our real head of state, just as he does now in practice, reflecting the real constitutional situation in New Zealand. If he based himself in our electorate to get a better feel for our concerns. As I cannot see any of these things happening, National is probably out of the running as far as I am concerned. MURRAY EGGERS Paraparaumu

wage? There are quite a few people who might be all right reducing from their $100 an hour. A couple of the most impressive candidates were the Labour candidate for Otaki, Rob McCann, Jan Logie, Greens, and Mana. They told stories, sounded sincere and informed us. They felt like the real thing — would you believe humane politicians? One thing they wisely did not do was mention the motorway cutting through Kapiti. The National MP, Nathan Guy, expounded on the dubious benefits thereof, rather than giving information on how the National government would help our elderly citizens. I doubt much of the audience would have much use for the motorway completion being five years away! It’s a question of focussing on who your audience is and what their primary interests are. If I was an aged person, I think I would be looking favourably on Labour and Green. GRAHAM BATHGATE Paraparaumu

Candidates impress

WRITE TO US

There was a recent meet-thecandidates meeting at The Meadows Church, Paraparaumu. Most of the speakers managed to address the needs and interests of the audience. The topics were healthcare, working conditions for carers and the minimum living wage. The Minister for the Aged, Michael Woodhouse, did some spurious arguing. He said everyone would want more money if a few dollars were added to the minimum living wage to bring it to $18 an hour. How about a maximum living

I would consider voting for my National candidate if: He promised to support the buyback of state assets previously sold, and supported a law to prevent future sales. These belong to, and have been paid for by the the people, and should be sacrosanct. If he supported an increase in taxation of the wealthy, to especially address child poverty, a national embarrassment for a supposedly socialist country.

Fads will come and go — health is No 1 So now we can’t eat sugar? After the Nigel Latta TV doco last week which put the fear of hell up everyone that they are going to drop dead at the taste of the white poisonous particles on their lips. My grandma used to say I could eat ice cream before my tea because ice cream doesn’t fill me up, she would turn in her grave thinking about kids not eating sugar. Eating ice cream and lollies is part of growing u p . . . is it not? I realise that inhaling sugar at every meal time is a sure

drown if you go swimming. If you google ‘what’s not good for you’ I’m sure it will come up with everything imaginable because on the internet you can find whatever you want to find. I’ve been working in health and fitness for a number of years and seen fad diets and fad exercises come and go and they will continue to come and go because we are looking for that magic pill that makes us look and feel great without a lot of effort. The things that we do know

that haven’t changed over hundreds of years is that movement is essential for life, our bodies are designed to move and if we don’t move them this is when illness sets in. With nutrition our goal should be to eat as close to the natural source as possible eg a tomato grown in your own back garden is better than a bottle of tomato sauce. This is not rocket science.

Andrew’s live life mantra: - Your health should always be number one (without this you will struggle). - Do things that make you happy on a regular basis. - Have treats sparingly and enjoy them. - Get more sleep. - Stress-less (you and your family will be happier). - Choose your friends wisely. Life shouldn’t be all doom and gloom, it’s there to be lived so live it.

Community involvement big part of review Council has adopted draft statements about how it will work with and support the community over the next 20 years. The draft council outcomes, which are based on community feedback, are an important step in developing a 20 year long-term plan, or LTP. The Local Government Act (2002) requires councils to review the LTP every three years and consult the community on the updated content. Work is now under way on the first

review of the plan, which will be completed in 2015. The whole community will be able to have their say during a consultation process starting in April next year. A community reference group, comprising 23 members from a crosssection of 14 community groups, was set up in May to ensure public views are taken into account in the planning process. It was chaired by former Privacy Commissioner, Marie Shroff.

WHO LOOKS AFTER YOU WHEN YOU’RE CARING FOR OTHERS?

You need a break sometimes… you’re only human. Help is at the ready; personal care and cleaning services.

In a parallel process, local iwi Te Atiawa, Raukawa and Ngati Toa Rangatira provided feedback through their grouping, the ART Forum. “The process of developing the outcomes was a wonderful outcome in itself,” says Mayor Ross Church. “We’ve had the opportunity to meet with and hear the ideas of a cross section of the Kapiti community. “We’re committed to continuing this open and consultative process

and maintaining the momentum over the coming months. “It’s really important for people to know that nothing is in, or out, of the plan until June next year when it is adopted by council so if there’s something you feel passionate about, make sure you get involved.” The first opportunity for the public to do that will be at a series of workshops to be held in November when people will be able to come in and listen to council working through

its proposed activities. In a change from the 2012 process, when the plan was first developed, people will not be asked to provide feedback on the draft plan. Instead, a short, easy to read consultation document will be released for public comment in April 2015. ■ The full set of outcomes is on council’s website at www.kapiticoast.govt.nz/long-termplan

Every week we are inundated with calls for help. To be honest the volume of animals on the brink of being euthanaised is devastating. At HUHA we are all about problem solving and educating. As a community we have the ability to change the culture of how animals are kept and cared for in our society. And in many of these desperate cases changing the formula of care and instilling a little common-sense is all it takes. Often if you look at a “bad” “naughty” or “out of control” animal there is merely an inexperienced, misinformed or overwhelmed owner involved. The animal isn’t bad, it may be living in the wrong environment or its caregiver may have failed to give it sound direction. It is HUHA’s mission to stop the suffering. The suffering of owners who are out of their depth and miserable, and the suffering of animals who are living on the edge due to an inappropriate situation stemming from ignorance and or misinformation. So the good news is that HUHA’s track record to date is proof that to every problem there is a workable solution. Now all we need is to work some of that HUHA know how and magic into every home in every community in NZ…..and that’s just what we plan to do!

Farm Animals If you’re looking for pets for your lifestyle block or farm, we have an array of animals all looking for forever homes. We will only adopt our farm animals to non-eating, free-range homes only.

Babies come first at hospital CLOE WILLETTS Paraparaumu Maternity Unit received its fourth consecutive reaccreditation as a baby friendly hospital. The Baby Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), administered by the New Zealand Breastfeeding Authority, is a national programme designed to improve promotion and support of breastfeeding in community maternity units. Midwives at the unit, a division of Capital and Coast District Health Board’s (CCDHB) Kapiti Health Centre, were delighted for being recognised by the New Zealand Breastfeeding Authority (NZBA) for having a 98 per cent exclusive breastfeeding rate. Charge midwife manager Chris Mallon said the unit’s reaccreditation and high breastfeeding statistics are “a testament to the knowledge, skill and experience of the staff employed here”. During a reaccreditation afternoon tea, during which Otaki Labour candidate Rob McCann gave a speech about his own family’s birthing experiences, Mallon spoke of the health benefits derived from breastfeeding research. “These include healthier immune systems for babies that protect against respiratory, ear, and gut infections including asthma and allergic sensitivities,” she said. “It reduces risks of obesity, type two diabetes, heart disease, and childhood cancers. “It also reduces risk to the mother of breast and ovarian

cancers, osteoporosis and obesity.” Since 2005, CCDHB’s breastfeeding resources and support team has expanded from one staff member to three specialist hospital-based staff, and four community-based staff. Mallon said Paraparaumu Maternity Unit staff have demonstrated a commitment to best breastfeeding practice, by regularly attending educational practices “over and above BFHI requirements”. Julie Sturfken of NZBA, who described Kapiti as having some of the highest breastfeeding rates in New Zealand, said the country has seen a “revolution since the Baby Friendly Initiative came along”. Having corresponded with BFHI standards four times, Sturfken said Paraparaumu Maternity Unit has “done exceptionally well every time”. The unit’s newborn rates currently sit at five per cent above the national average for exclusive breastfeeding, followed by eight per cent above the national average for babies aged three months. Local breastfeeding statistics for babies aged six months reach 23 per cent, in comparison with the national average of 16 per cent. “What happens in a maternity unit sets the tone,” Sturfken said. “Paraparaumu Maternity Unit is making a difference for every baby who comes through here. What you’re doing in your community is working.”

Candidates face off

Be a Secret Saver Financial success comes not from a high income or a high level of education; it comes from the application of just one golden rule. It is that easy, yet that hard. There are five simple words in the golden rule, yet they are the most difficult words to put into practice. Those words are ‘Spend Less Than You Earn’. Some of the most highly educated, high income earners have the greatest difficulty following this rule and, at the end of their working life, find themselves financially far less successful than those on modest incomes who have learned how to put money aside on a regular basis. The majority of the working population has the potential to save, but whether that is turned into reality will depend on attitudes towards life and money. Saving is a behaviour that is underpinned by psychological factors. It is interesting that for those who have enrolled in KiwiSaver, the compulsory deduction of at least 3% of their pay each payday has been a relatively painless way to save and, now that KiwiSaver balances are building to quite large sums, the benefits of regular saving are clear to all. Most people are surprised at how quickly their own contributions have mounted up over time. Therein lies the key to how to Spend Less Than You Earn; and that is to be a Secret Saver. A Secret Saver is someone who sets up a regular transfer each payday into a savings account that is hidden out of sight, out of mind - in other words, not on your list of internet banking accounts and preferably with a different bank than your other accounts. That takes care of the psychological factors. Saving then happens automatically and painlessly and there is no temptation to spend what you can’t see. Liz Koh is an Authorised Financial Adviser. Apart from the early years, the Otaki electorate election battleground has been won by either National or Labour. National’s Nathan Guy has been the Otaki MP for the last two terms and is seeking a third. His main challenger is Labour’s newcomer Rob McCann. Kapiti News caught up with both men before voting day. Nathan Guy

What achievements have you helped secure for the Otaki electorate? It’s been a privilege serving as the local MP for Otaki, representing Kapiti and Horowhenua people in Parliament for the past six years. I’ve campaigned hard for the Kapiti expressway and it’s great to see construction underway. This is already having a major impact on the economy, with hundreds of new jobs, and, once finalised, it will mean quicker, safer journeys for everyone. Construction has begun on Transmission Gully and I’ve been one of the strongest advocates in Parliament for this new motorway, which has been delayed for decades. It will improve our connection to Wellington and encourage more people to live, work and visit here. We have new trains and services to Waikanae, and I’ve supported the development of Kapiti Coast Airport. We now have direct flights to Auckland and Christchurch, and visitor fees to Kapiti Island are being reduced. Health services and support for the elderly are very important to me because we have the highest number of over-65s of any electorate in the country. As a Government, we’ve increased health funding and increased the number of elective surgeries by 40,000 a year. Superannuation payments have increased by 28 per cent since 2008, while the cost of living has increased by 15 per cent over the same period. Police are better equipped with modern technology, allowing for more frontline police work. In Kapiti, recorded crime has dropped by 18 per cent since 2008, ultra-fast broadband is being rolled out in Paraparaumu and Waikanae, and $10.7 million has been invested in upgrading Kapiti schools since 2010. If re-elected, what will be your key areas of focus for the Otaki electorate? I want to push ahead with the Kapiti expressway and Transmission Gully and ensure our community benefits from these exciting projects. We need to ensure locals are taking up the construction and design jobs, and that our communities are connected by

these new roads. I want to encourage more industries to base themselves in places like Levin, Otaki and Foxton, assisted by the continual rollout of ultra-fast broadband, and I will keep pushing to improve our local health and social services.

off my first marathon this year at the Great Forests Waitarere Beach event.

What are the top three things you have learnt about being a politician? 1. I have learnt a lot about myself — that it is hard work with long hours and that politics is tough on your family. 2. You can make a difference locally. Thousands of constituents call into my busy offices in Paraparaumu and Levin each term and it is both challenging and rewarding to resolve issues that ultimately make a difference to their personal lives. Helping people is hugely important to me. 3. I have also learnt that politics affects people every day. To get things done, you need the support and mandate of local people. Most people elect an MP to do a job and every three years they will review that.

Rob McCann

If you could invite three politicians for dinner (past or present) who would they be and what would you cook them? John Key, Nelson Mandela and Barack Obama. I would serve them roast lamb with Horowhenua veggies, local Tuatara beer and Ohau Gravels wine. Away from political life, what do you enjoy doing? I don’t get a lot of spare time, but when I do I like to spend it with my family on the farm at Levin. I have three young children under nine. We love biking together as a family and I try to keep fit by running. I knocked

What makes you happy? Again, spending time with my family, including catching up with my parents, who have been great mentors and a wonderful support for me. If elected, what will be your key areas of focus for the Otaki electorate? This electorate has the oldest average age in New Zealand, and the people who are paid as aged-care workers are among the lowest paid in New Zealand. We must rectify this and ensure that our seniors are respected and cared for. I will work to bring meaningful Government investment into the regional economy. That means creating long-term jobs, saving the Capital Connection, investing in public transport, our health system, our schools and education facilities. Investment does not stop at a road. Why do you want to be the next Otaki MP? I want our community to thrive. I’m a local. I live in my electorate and my kids go to school here. I have promised that I will never shift my family into Wellington and turn up only at election time. That might be acceptable for a list MP, but it’s not OK for your local guy. For me, representing a community means being a part of a community. That’s the role I will have — representing Otaki, because this community is our home. For people who don’t know you, who is the real Rob McCann? He should be about 5kg lighter

than the current Rob McCann. The battle wounds from when I was once a keen sportsman now see me settle for cheering on Kiwis from the comfort of the couch. As a small nation, we are exceptional, and I love it. For me, my family and community are the most important things. That’s why I am standing for Labour. I want my kids to have the opportunities I had (and then ensuring it’s not just my kids, but everyone’s). Granddad always believed that if you said and did the same thing in private as you did in public, life would be straightforward. Words that still resonate for me today, and I try to live up to them. If you could invite three politicians for dinner (past or present) who would they be and what would you cook them? I’d have to find politicians with ethics. Michael Joseph Savage, David Cunliffe and Norman Kirk. Their legacies, past, present and future, are all about nation-building and having vision for creating a fairer society. We could talk about building that future over my mum’s special lasagne recipe. When you’re not out campaigning, what do you enjoy doing? Kids are only young once, so you have to make the most of every moment you can. In summer, things like taking the boys for bike rides by the river and down to the beach, then home for a barbecue, enjoying a wine and, if I’ve timed it right, watching cricket on the telly. Winter is a good book, LEGO wars with the kids or off to Coastlands Aquatic Centre. Jo and I enjoy quality programmes on MySky and love not having to watch the adverts. We work hard and spend a bit of time in the community, so it’s nice to have quality family time. What makes you happy? As a young man, I loved performing on stage and, as an event promoter, I have worked with some of New Zealand’s best performers, from musicians like Neil Finn and Dave Dobbyn to Shapeshifter and Shihad. With age, focus changes, and now it’s watching the kids develop and discover new things. It doesn’t get much better than coming home from a day of campaigning and having the children pile in on the couch saying ‘I love you’.

Ear candling is back The relaxation centre is well known for ear candling after a break of nearly 2 and a half years Margaret Hannan is proud to say I’m available for appointments to all her new and existing clients, she has reopened her centre based within The Hearing Company 16 Ihakara street in Paraparaumu. She is offering a special introductory offer was $50 now $40 for a limited time on ear candling and $65 now $55 for an hour Reiki treatment session Anyone can benefit from ear candling, people who suffer from Sinus or sore throats, or if you have trouble hearing or re-occuring ear infections. Margret said the candles work in three ways. Firstly when the candle is lit a gentle vacuum is created. The heat from the candle softens the debris in the ear candle and suction draws up excess wax. Secondly the vapours create a warm airflow and cleanses the inner ear, sinus tubes and the passage between the ear and throat. It helps to drain out mucus, which helps to unblock the ears. And lastly the cleansing process helps the cochlea hairs, which is essential for sound production. This may help with tinnitus” If you wear hearing aids helping to keep wax and moisture in the ear canal to a minimum is vital for the correct benefit and use of the hearing aids.

Appreciation comes in a tin KAP100914SPLsue

HELPFUL: Wellington Free Ambulance supporter Sue Kaye with paramedic Lance Anderson.

Sue Kaye is a big supporter of Wellington Free Ambulance. This week during their annual appeal she will be coordinating close to 90 collectors across 28 sites from Raumati to Waikanae, and everywhere in between. Sue, of Paraparaumu, is also the mystery baker behind the ‘bottomless tin of sustenance’ that shows

up at the Paraparaumu station on a regular basis. She says it’s just her way of helping. “I’ve had to use the ambulance on a few occasions, and everyone in my family has needed them at one stage. “I don’t have a lot of money so I can’t give that way, but I can do this.” Sue bakes about once a fortnight and delivers the tin stacked full with cakes and biscuits to the Wellington Free Ambulance crew based at Paraparaumu. It’s generally consumed within a couple of days, and delivered back to Sue for replenishing. “This week it arrived back with some beautiful tulips to say thanks.” Wellington Free Ambulance paramedic Lance Anderson says Sue’s support for the crew is

hugely appreciated. “It’s so nice for someone to find the tin sitting there when they get in from a job at 2am in the morning.” He says it’s not doing so much for his waist-line, although he’s prepared to put up with that for the pleasure of the shortbread and ginger crunch. This weekend Wellington Free Ambulance goes to the street for their annual appeal. They rely on the generous support of Sue and all of the people in the community who help to keep their free, emergency ambulance service running. If you’d like to help, please give to one of their collectors, text HELP to 8595 to give $3, or donate online at www.wfa.org.nz “We’ve all used it, and we don’t want to lose it,” Sue says.

WAITING GAME: Whitebaiters at Otaki Beach. Photo: Rena Tarrach

Lots of sciene to whitebaiting Rena Tarrach, from Cologne, in Germany, who has enjoyed living Otaki for a few weeks, writes about whitebaiting They get up early in the morning, when the sun is still sleeping. Then they go to ‘their’ secret spots. Whitebaiters. We met some of them at Otaki Beach, standing with their gum boots in the ocean, with Kapiti Island as a back drop, and holding the nets down. Yes, some of them go to rivers, some prefer the ocean. It is all about the science of white baiting. The season started in August, and is going until November. There is a big festival on right now — The West Coast Whitebait Season Festival. A lot of time it is a family affair, the wife goes, the

husband joins later and comes with the dogs, they read books (no, not the dogs), and sometimes they are sitting on their chairs early in the morning, so nobody else takes the good spot, and are still there in the late afternoon. Packed in warm gumbootssuits, where the whole water proof suit is connected to the gumboots, so it is warm and, yes waterproof. Whitebaiting isn’t everybody’s thing. Some people it, some don’t. But there is a whole science behind it. And it can be very therapeutic, to sit and wait, to have the patience, and to read, and to dream, of the big catch.

Trio form for concert Three first class musicians are combining creative forces to perform as a trio for the Waikanae Music Society this Sunday. Event spokesperson Wendy van Delden said the trio includes pianist Michael Houstoun and violinist Wilma Smith, two of New Zealand’s “greatest musical treasures and long-time chamber music partners”. Van Delden describes Houstoun as “New Zealand’s most revered pianist”, and Smith as “the founding leader

of the New Zealand String Quartet, former Concertmaster of the NZSO, and now Concertmaster of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.” Last appearing together in Waikanae as part of a piano quartet ensemble in 2009, the long-standing duo will this time be joined by “highly regarded principal cellist of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra”, Eliah Sakakushev-von Bismarck. Born in Bulgaria, Sakakushev-von Bismarck

has won a collection of international prizes and distinctions, and “has an enormous wealth of experience as soloist and orchestra leader in a vast array of countries ranging from Russia to South America”. Starting at 2.30pm in the Waikanae Memorial Hall, the concert will feature three of the favourite piano trios in the repertoire. “Mozart’s last trio and Ravel’s famous only trio will make up the first half of the

programme, while the second half will be devoted to Beethoven’s Archduke Trio, widely regarded as the greatest of all works for this combination of instruments.” Door sales will be available, or tickets can be purchased at Waikanae New World, Moby Dickens Books in Paraparaumu Beach, or at Lush Design Gallery in Raumati. ■ Enquiries are welcome on 04 905 6070, or for more information visit www.waikanaemusic.org.

Wotton acrylics go on display Acrylic artist Averil Wotton is the latest painter to have her work displayed as part of Rosetta Cafe’s monthly exhibition initiative. Already adding colour to the walls of the Raumati Beach-based cafe, following her exhibition’s launch last Thursday, Wotton’s paintings will remain on show until

early next month. Wotton, whose works include still-life such as flowers and wine, landscape, birds and Tuscan scenes, said her main interest in painting developed as a result of the death of her much-loved son nine years ago. “At difficult times of profound grief, I discovered the

huge benefits of painting as a therapy,” she said. “I like to paint big, bold and simple.” Aside from developing her talent through classes at Wellington Art School and Inverlochy Art School, Wotton’s skills are predominately self-taught. As well as having permanent art on display at

Raumati’s No. 6 cafe´, which is owned by her daughter and son-in-law, Wotton exhibits at the annual Rotary Art Show, and as part of the Kapiti Arts Trail. ■ Averil is happy to do commissions on request and can be emailed at averilian@hotmail.com.

Nature’s healing power explored Anyone wanting to reduce stress and find a calmer life should consider getting back to nature, a Wellington meditation teacher says. It’s common knowledge that people feel calmer in nature and scientific research is now proving it, says Nowspace Meditation teacher Savitri Ishaya. In November Ms Ishaya will be teaching meditation techniques at Kapiti Nature Lodge at the north end of Kapiti Island. The weekend is called Choose Peace. Ms Ishaya says recent research shows tranquil scenes of nature have a clear effect on the brain, enabling regions to better work in sync. “For instance, findings published in the journal NeuroImage demonstrated that tranquil environments cause distinct brain areas to become connected with one another while manmade environments disrupt brain connections. “Other researchers are also discovering that surrounding yourself with nature can be a powerful way to relieve stress. “A study by OPENspace Research Centre at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland has shown that people accessing more green space have lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol than those who are surrounded by urban settings. “Nature gives back to us what manmade environments tend to take away.

KAP090914SPLcalm

CALM: A meditation course is happening on Kapiti Island. “One of the quickest ways to de-stress is to get out into nature and bathe in the beauty of the world around us.” Ms Ishaya says New Zealanders are lucky to be surrounded by natural beauty and to make the most of the benefits Nowspace Meditation is planning an event later this year on Kapiti Island. People interested in learning some simple and effective meditation techniques are invited to come along to

the special weekend course to be held on the island in November. “Nowspace Meditation teaches a series of simple meditation techniques which can be used with eyes either open or closed, and so can be used no matter what you are doing. These techniques are great for reducing stress and improving health, sleep, relationships, focus, creativity, energy and clarity. Participants in the weekend course

will travel to the island on Friday November 14 for two nights at Kapiti Nature Lodge at Waiorua Bay, with Kapiti Island Nature Tours. As well as learning the meditation techniques, there will be the chance for people to explore the island and go Kiwi spotting at night. “It’s one of the few places in the world you can meditate with Kaka and Kiwi.” ■ For more details visit nowspace.co.nz

What’s On...

Games turn serious BELOVED SISTERS Screening at Shoreline Cinema Waikanae It’s 1788 in Rudolstadt, a small provincial town in Germany. The beautiful Caroline von Beulwitz is unhappily married, longing for love and life. Charlotte von Lengefeld, her shy sister, dreams of finding a husband. The two are a heart and soul, until he enters their lives. The aristocratic sisters Charlotte and Caroline both fall in love with the controversial young writer and hothead Friedrich Schiller. Defying the conventions of their time, the sisters decide to

share their love with Schiller. What begins playfully, almost as a game among the three of them, soon turns serious as it leads to the end of a pact. In this aesthetic tour-de-force, one of Germany’s foremost “auteurs,” Dominik Graf (“Dreileben”, “A Map of the Heart”), examines a passionate love triangle that may have been one of Schiller’s most closely guarded secrets. The actors Hannah Herzsprung (“Four Minutes”), Henriette Confurius and Florian Stetter (“Sophie Scholl”) demonstrate the full range of their artistry, and, through their eloquence and expressiveness, raise this gorgeously shot film to the level of a timeless study of love.

Designed by Peter Davis & built in 2000 by Carl Van Der Meer & his team, this is a rare & unique offering for todays busy modern family. Situated amongst the towering Norfolk pines within a quiet cul de sac just minutes walk from the Links golf course & the main beach precinct, this is a home that offers both form & function. I suspect the Designers brief was to create an elegant home with generous living spaces for both adults & children, high quality service areas, a big welcoming entry hall, & a sweeping feature staircase. At around 267m² the lower interior offers a large family friendly granite kitchen as its centrepiece, a relaxed family/dining room with gas fire, a separate West facing formal lounge, master brm ensuite plus 2nd brm, & access into the double garaging. From the homes main entry hall a beautiful curved staircase leads upstairs to a generous 3rd brm with its own private lounge & wc, making it ideal for both teenagers, guests or the option of running a homestay. If it's the perfect home in the perfect location you are after, may we suggest you've found it. Welcome Home.

Young fashion guru gets Indian exposure CLOE WILLETTS Paekakariki’s Emilia Barr, 20, is preparing to travel to India this November for a unique international fashion education project, after being selected as a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Scholarships for Asia. Set to visit India for five weeks, the ex-Kapiti College pupil will be among 15 talented Kiwi students taking part in a fashion education first for New Zealand. Barr’s selection follows a popular turquoise-infused silk dress design, which she created using patterns of hand-woven silk saris from India’s Southern village, Doddampalayam. The design, which she started in May, was inspired by the “elegant and classy” dresses worn by the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton. Alongside 44 fellow New Zealand Fashion Technology KAP120914SPLemiliabarr

COLLABORATIVE FASHION: Emilia Barr, far left, of Paekakariki beside her Resene paint colour Surfie Green-inspired silk design. The design has seen her selected for a fashion education project in India.

The challenge for our students is to take the traditional sari with its traditional values, shapes, patterns and draping, and throw that all up into the air to come up with a new design idea.

Giles Brooker New Zealand Fashion Tech educator

students from Auckland and Wellington, Barr followed the New Zealand Fashion Technology’s brief to design and make a contemporary-chic fashion look using the delicate hand-woven silk. Founders of New Zealand’s award-winning fashion institute, Kevin Smith and Val MarshallSmith, established the design project alongside educators Giles Brooker and Prabha Govindasamy, in addition to working closely with paint company Resene. Giving 45 students 50 vibrant Resene paint-inspired colours to work from, the institute went on to

select 10 finished looks to open five Resene Designer Selection Shows at last month’s New Zealand Fashion Week. Now, the 15 selected scholarship recipients will see their silk garments re-created in India, and their patterns gifted to students at India’s Bannari Amman Institute of Technology for on-going learning about New Zealand design. In exchange, Barr and her counterparts are set to learn about the ancient heritage of Indian textile production, and silk weaving. “India has centuries of history in being creative with colour,” New Zealand Fashion Tech educator Giles Brooker said. “The challenge for our students is to take the traditional sari with its traditional values, shapes, patterns and draping, and throw that all up into the air to come up with a new design idea.” Barr, who learnt the basics of sewing from her mother growing up in Kapiti, is looking forward to expanding her creative thinking in India. “New Zealand is becoming a diverse society, so if I’m to be successful in my fashion career, I need as much cross-cultural experience as I can get,” said Barr, who first unearthed her eye for fashion by sewing miniature clothing for her dolls said “This is an amazing opportunity.”

· There is mixed support for the shared space for vehicles and pedestrians in Mahara Place. · Improving the link to the Marae and creating a cultural thread was well supported. Transport and Parking · Comments clearly stated that more parking within the town centre and at the railway station is needed. · Angle parking along SH1 was perceived by some as dangerous. · Consideration of parking to be

created on the opposite side of the town to encourage people to walk through the town including consideration of parking in Marae Lane. · The issue of crossing the railway line at Elizabeth Street. Ngaio Road · There was mixed support of this development. · Many were concerned over the loss of car parks. · Concerns were raised about exiting retail alone SH1.

Canada geese cull stalls Local residents living around the three lakes of Paraparaumu’s Waterstone subdivision are crying foul over the increased numbers of Canada Geese foraging in and around the lakes. They want council to cull their numbers. The potential wetland habitat for these birds is expected to increase by more than 10 hectares through environmental mitigation measures attached to the construction of the expressway. “Residents have approached me and the Paraparaumu Raumati Community Board to take action,” Cr K Gurunathan said. “But I’m afraid the question of culling these birds can be a very polarising issue and predictably council staff are reluctant to get caught up in a matter that can evoke some strong sentiments from animal lovers. “They are beautiful birds but, in large numbers and in residential areas, they can be a health hazard. “Each bird can produce up to a kilo of droppings. “They foul the waterways and

surrounding reserves and walkways.” He said Waterstone residents had reported flocks of up to 120 birds. “I understand the nutrients entering the lakes is causing algae blooms. “Environmental groups in the Wellington region have also complained about these birds competing against native birds and destroying restoration plantings. “Culling them in residential areas can be very tricky. “There have been recent incidents where local families were sickened by the sight wounded birds flapping on their properties. “This is actually a job for the Wellington Regional Council but staff there have told me that they have no funding to manage them unless Canada Geese are included in their Regional Pest Control Strategy. “Until then, they are not officially defined as a pest. In June 2011 the government moved the bird from Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 of the Wildlife Act 1953. “Previously they were protected game birds managed

by Fish and Game NZ, now, under Schedule 5, they are treated as a nuisance and can be controlled by anyone at any time. “It needs systematic long term management and GW is well placed to do so but GW staff said their current pest strategy was about nine years old and needed reviewing but they were waiting for the MAF to undertake their national review. “They did not know when MAF was going to do that. “So we have KCDC staff reluctant to get involved and GW staff waiting on the Ministry. “I think including the bird into the regional pest strategy is urgent as the completion of the expressway from Mckay’s to Peka Peka is expected to create up to 10 hectares of new wetlands and ideal habitat for Canada Geese. “The extension of the expressway through Otaki will further increase habitats. “It’s better to take steps now rather than wait for an explosion of bird numbers.”

Waikanae as a destination · There is a need to encourage people to stop and come and visit. · Encourage the idea of Waikanae as a cultural/arts centre of the Kapiti Coast. · Recognition that Waikanae town Centre should be a destination as well as a Community Service centre. Next steps Council will be briefed in November based on the ranking from the community and feedback.

More money for first home buyers There has been recent talk in the run up to the election that National (if re-elected) will improve the current KiwiSaver withdrawal and subsidy rules making more money available for first home buyer deposits. The proposed changes include being able to withdraw the KiwiSaver yearly tax credits (excluding the $1000 kick start) as well as the member and employer contributions. Current Housing New Zealand or KiwiSaver Withdrawal Subsidies (normally $1000 for every year after three years in the KiwiSaver scheme maximum $5000) will be called the KiwiSaver HomeStart Grant. If you are buying a newly built home these subsidies will double. The regional price cap to be eligible for these subsidies will also increase such as $550,000 in Auckland and Wellington $450,000. Everywhere else will be $350,000. This is meant to encourage more building of new homes and putting them within reach of first home buyers. I like the idea of first home buyers being able to get the tax credits out of KiwiSaver. For most first home buyers’ every last dollar is critical and every bit more they can squeeze out of KiwiSaver will be a big help. I

Mighty flower power

would estimate 60-70 per cent of first home buyers use their KiwiSaver in some way to boost their deposit. Imagine the property market if KiwiSaver withdrawals had never been available? This will continue to grow as people are in the scheme longer and more continue to join. Until more developers start doing small section and affordable housing developments then building will still be dominated by more cashed up buyers upgrading their existing house. Now we just need the Reserve Bank to loosen up the LVR restrictions to let more first home buyers back into the market. ■ For a free copy of our Home Buyer Guide contact our team 7 days a week on 0800 000 517 or email craig@craigpope.co.nz for all your mortgage and insurance needs. FUNERAL DIRECTORY

Good Grief by Andrew Malcolm

Society can and the community around you can affect how you grieve. “Grief is the price of love. Whenever we love, we risk. Love for someone means that if you lose it, you will hurt, and the amount of suffering will depend on the amount of love.” - Merren Parker

Incorporating Kaitawa Crematorium

It is important to know that grief is a process, not a state. The process takes time to work properly and cannot be rushed. Grief is normal and healthy.

The grief process has common patterns, but in no particular order, that include shock; sadness; relief; tears; laughter; loneliness; depression; resentment; Then finally ..Adjusting to a new way of living. Grief is NOT forgetting but rather about remembering, affirming good memories and the healing of bad memories. It’s time to give tennis a hearty go Paraparaumu Beach Tennis Club is holding two events this weekend to attract new players of all ages. Anyone interested in starting or returning to tennis can view the club’s facilities at Te Atiawa Park and have a hit with existing members on Saturday from 1pm. Club captain Lane Lawson says a Yankee tennis tournament and an exhibition match are planned as a fun way to encourage people back into tennis and to celebrate the club’s extensive new deck, permanent seating and barbeque area. Children are invited to a free Hotshots Have a Go Day on Sunday from 1-4pm. The Hot Shots programme is in association with Tennis New Zealand and teaches children tennis in fun, supportive and interactive sessions. It uses smaller courts, nets and rackets, and lower compression tennis balls that are easier for children to control. Participants move through several stages until they are well equipped to play regular tennis. While Hot Shots is aimed at beginners aged 5 – 12, older or more experienced children will also be catered for with games, coaching tips and a sausage sizzle. Junior convenor Matt Kingi says last year’s Have a Go Day attracted around 40 children, with a healthy number joining the club. “Tennis is a great social sport to know how to play, and it’s something that can be continued right through adulthood,” says Matt. Paraparaumu tennis juniors include some of the strongest players in the Tennis Central region, and the club is always looking to progress new players. It is hoped some newcomers will play novice interclub after Christmas. The 2014/15 junior season starts on Friday, October 17 until the end of term 1 next year. Junior club night is on Fridays from 6-8pm, including beginner coaching. Organised senior social tennis is run on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and Monday evenings. The club is also fielding around 13 interclub teams this season, ranging from novice juniors to men’s premier 1, the top grade in the wider Wellington region.

Boxing evening packed a big punch CLOE WILLETTS The Kapiti Coast Boxing Fundraiser raised over $5000 for Kapiti Youth Support this month, and drew light to the emerging popularity of women’s boxing in the district, event manager Keith Bullock said. Held at the Waikanae War Memorial Hall on September 6, the event saw 28 contenders and around 500 guests, with male and female competitors ranging in age from 20 to 54. Quickly selling out thanks to Facebook and word of mouth, the fundraising evening saw female competitors steal the show, with a wave of standing ovations and response from the public who rated it a “10 out of 10”. “The response from the community was better than I’d expected,” said Bullock, a gold medallist and previous New Zealand boxing champion. “I already have people

Have a go at playing golf Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club, in conjunction with New Zealand Golf, is reaching out to parents and caregivers on the Kapiti Coast to give interested 8-12 year old boys and girls an opportunity to have a go at golf. On Saturday September 20, starting at 11am, the club will be running a free open day for young people who wish to consider golf as a recreational and/or sporting pastime. This will be a structured two hour session by local professional golf instructor Kevin Smith assisted by members of the club. Participating kids will learn some basic golf techniques as an introduction to the sport and for those who are then interested the club has developed a comprehensive after school and school holiday coaching programme that provides a pathway into the sport. Places will be limited so early registration is important to secure a place. The club’s junior development programme will take young children with no previous ability through a three tiered development programme that is designed to have them playing competitive golf in their early to mid teens. This year the club’s U19 boys team won the Watt Cup which is the supreme golfing trophy for junior golfers in the Wellington district. One of the club’s junior girls was also selected to play for the Wellington women's team. Smith is a nationally recognised professional golf coach, has coached national teams, and is currently the coach of New Zealand's number two woman amateur golfer Julia Alverez. The Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club Beach Golf, located at 376 Kapiti Road, with a global reputation as one of the finest links golf courses in the world, has hosted the New Zealand Open 12 times including in 2002 when Tiger Woods competed. To register please contact Ricky Scammell at the golf shop on 902 8216.

CLOE WILLETTS Nine young Kapiti girls were among a collection of 150 All Star Victory Cheerleaders to compete at this month’s Cheerbrandz Capital Challenge Competition, proving age is no barrier for stand-out results. Aged six to seven, team Gypsymoths shone at Porirua’s Te Ruaparaha Arena, bringing home gold after receiving first place for mini level 1b, and second for grand champs level 1b. In the first year All Star Victory Cheerleaders has incorporated a mini under-eights team, the Gypsymoths

proved their once-a-week half-hour training regime at Paraparaumu’s Manchester Street gym is paying off. “The result is a great reflection of our coach development programme, as they are coached by Grace White and Bailey Caldwell, with the help of head coach Caitlin McLeod,” manager Julie McLeod said. Currently fundraising to attend Auckland’s Cheerbrandz Cheer and Dance Internationals Competition in November, the local girls are gearing up to be part of a contingent of 130 All Star Victory Cheerleaders. All Star Cheerleaders, which is New

Zealand’s largest cheer company, has over 1500 male and female cheerleaders ranging in age up to 23 nationwide, with seven competitive teams and seven non-competitive squads, two of which are based in Otaki. Ameera Gray, mother of Gypsymoths team member Bailey Smith, 7, said the competition “was a big deal for the girls since it was their first, so naturally they were full of nerves”. “Once they were on the floor they did amazing,” she said. “The Gypsymoths are all so proud of their gold medals.”

Work key to basketball success

Jacinta Beckley is overseas on a basketball scholarship at Seattle University. She has been studying hard, enjoying a new lifestyle, and playing heaps of basketball. Finally, after two years of hard work you have arrived in Seattle, Washington. Was it a difficult process to get over? I wouldn’t say it was a difficult process to get a scholarship to the states, I was say that it was definitely more hard work than anything. Because I lived an hour out of Wellington and was still in high school I could only go into town for NZBA morning training on Thursday and Friday mornings because my class timetable allowed me enough time to make it back on time for my first class on those days. Every holiday I went into morning training every morning that I could waking up at 5am to make it in on time. I also attended every NZBA academy camp and trained with the guys there so I could compete at the highest level I could. The mornings I could not get into town, I trained out in Paraparaumu with either Peter Gosnell or myself working on ball handling, shooting, strength and conditioning. I personally believe if you are not prepared to work hard on the court every day, you will not make it on scholarship. So in order for me to get this opportunity I needed to be prepared to work hard every day. Wake up, work out hard, go to class, and train again. This sort of hard work was what prepared me. But also hard work off the court is important, because getting good grades is key. If I didn’t take the right classes or have the best grades I could, then colleges would not be interested in me. By all of this it is crucial to understand it is not difficult to get a scholarship if you are prepared to work hard. What is the biggest difference between basketball in New Zealand and the USA? The biggest difference between women’s basketball in the USA compared to NZ is the strength and style that they play. They like to dribble a lot, I have noticed that they would rather dribble the ball up the court and set up a half court set. Whereas back home in New Zealand I was always taught to push the ball up

Paraparaumu?! Seattle is definitely a lot larger then Paraparaumu, which is no surprise! It is an awesome city with many things to do. It rains often, but we had a very hot summer this year with less rain than usual apparently. The location of campus is very central to many things. 15 minutes from the airport, walking distance to many stores and down town where the Space Needle is located. Seattle is a very ‘green’ city. They have so many different rubbish bins it confuses me! ‘Compost, recycling and trash.’ They recycle everything, if you own a plastic drink bottle, it is like a sin! There is trees and natural landscape everywhere, lakes and parks close by. In this sense it feels quite like home.

JACINTA BECKLEY the court in fast break or run 3⁄ 4 court sets. Have your teammates and coaches welcomed you to your new team or has it been a challenging process? At first it was difficult trying to fit in with the team because I came in just as the season finished in spring, before the seniors graduated and all the freshmen came in. It was awkward timing, but I wouldn’t have wanted it any other way. I was welcomed in with open arms by the coaching staff and team. Training with them three times a day gave me a chance to get to know everyone. I was there three months before the rest of the freshmen and transfers arrived to settle me in to the American way of life. When the rest of the recruits got here, it was a great chance for me to show them around as the “professional freshman.” — That is what the coaches called me. How does Seattle compare with

The all new Jazz.

Have you done any new training or things we don’t normally do in New Zealand? Have you seen improvement in your game so far? The ball handling skills and drills are quite similar to the stuff I did back home. The biggest difference in training is was we do for strength and conditioning. We do it four times a week with testing at the start and end of every quarter. We also do what they call ‘open gym’ which is just a 5 on 5 scrimmage, and individuals which are positional training with the coaching staff. So there is three or four players to four or five coaches. And we also have full team trainings too. I have seen an improvement not only in my ability, but in my speed, strength, body and confidence. I can only put that down to hard work and training 3 times a day 4 days a week. What does a normal daily and weekly schedule look like for you? Every quarter we are required to take a specific number of credits, which is three classes. We have one or two classes every day, three trainings a day and 8 hours of study hall a week. We get Wednesdays and weekends off training in the off season, but in season everything picks up. Everything we do is scheduled around our classes, so our whole team can attend every training together.

NCAA guidelines are very strict and have specific training regulations to follow in how many hours we can train a week. Therefore we have to stay within these guidelines. Preseason training is starting in a few weeks. And our first game which is an exhibition game is on November 1. How are you doing in your classes? I was not expecting to do as well as I did in the spring. My GPA for the quarter was a 3.767 out of a possible 4.0, which the coaches said they were impressed with considering it was my first time taking an American classes. I took three required ‘core’ classes which were, writing, math and social science. I got an ‘A’ in both math and writing, but I got a B+ in the social science class was American History. Being the typical Kiwi I am I managed to write about the history of New Zealand in my final paper alongside some American history. My paper was the similarities between the indigenous people of both New Zealand and the USA. This was fun to do, but adjusting to the writing style was challenging. Besides the style of writing I think it was quite easy and similar to back home. Therefore if you have good grades in NZ you can continue to get good grades here too! Do you have any advice for Kiwi basketballers hoping to follow in your footsteps? The advice I have is to start working hard right now. Make sure you are taking the right subjects and get your grades as high as you can. Also talk to your teachers on or before your first day of class, tell them your goals and they will be more than happy to help you get to where you need to be in order to gain a scholarship. Trust me if you are willing to put in the effort to learn, then they will put in just as much effort as you do to help you succeed. So work hard in the class room and on the court! Train every day, pushing your limits and remember it is okay to make mistakes and mess up. If you don’t then you aren’t trying hard enough. Learn from your mistakes, push the limits and never give anything less than your best.
