A hurdle for centre DAVID HAXTON Wellington Regional Council is keen for the Kapiti Equestrian and Vaulting Centre, which shot to fame with its ninth placing in the World Equestrian Games, to relocate its base. At an environment and community development committee meeting on Thursday, Cr Tony Lloyd said Wellington Regional Council staff gave a presentation at the latest Waikanae Community Board meeting about stopbank work along the Waikanae River. “The issue was raised in relation to the equestrian centre, which is currently within the river corridor. “They are of a view that it [the equestrian centre] needs to move, they appear to be of the view that it needs to be out
of the river corridor, and the inference I got from their comments was that this is a matter that should be taken over by Kapiti Coast District Council and we should be sorting out where the equestrian centre should go. “It does not sit well with me, and I don’t believe it sits well with the rest of the community board, and I believe some of the other councillors here are of the same view.” Council chief executive Pat Dougherty said the issue had been raised with the regional council some months ago who had suggested the club move across the river to the council owned Howarth Block. “Our response was that if the equestrian centre needs to be relocated then that’s a cost of the regional council project. “They should be buying the

land from the equestrian centre and then helping them find another site. “Any suggestion the equestrian centre moves on to the Howarth Block is effectively moving part of the cost of the regional council project on to the district council. “And we were absolutely emphatic that was not acceptable and nor was it acceptable that part of the land that we have now established as a reserve should be allocated for private use. “That’s been the very clear message we’ve conveyed back to the regional council at the highest level. “But yes we’re aware of a continued push to transfer some of the cost of the project onto the district council and we will continue to resist
that,” he said. He was meeting the new regional council chief executive and was going to emphasise the need for the regional council to “adequately fund this stopbank project and part of that is land purchase”. “We’ve also suggested the Transport Agency probably has quite a bit of land for sale and gave them contact details about who they should be talking too but that doesn’t seem to have got anywhere.” Cr Mike Cardiff said the issue had nothing to do with council. “And I would be very against any suggestion that any sort of private activity is transferred on to our public reserve.” Glenn McIntyre, from the equestrian centre, said he would comment next week.
