Hands to help Pat guides students to be their best

By Dan Whitfield It could be the luck of the Irish or the fact he has 10 years experience – whatever it is, Patrick McCann is improving Wainuiomata High School’s young people one student at a time.

The new youth coach has been stationed at the high school on Parkway for a little over a month, and has been working with about 30 students aged between 16 and 17 years of age.

As part of his role, he is in charge of working with the students to help them achieve, and find out where they want to go in life. He says it is about sitting down with them and setting reasonable goals.

Fernlea School has received a generous donation of $1000 to help tick projects off their to-do-list.

The money was presented to the school by local Professionals real estate agent Ben McLennan, who took $250 out of every house he sold in the area over the past month.

While principal Tony Field says it is a “fantastic” gesture, the highlight is that the support will continue, with future donations on the cards.

This round of funding has already been set aside to create an alternative way into the grounds from at the rear of the school; something that is needed to alleviate school traffic in and out of the main gate at peak times.

Tony says it is going to be a big help and will open up the potential to do more things around the school – such as getting digital projectors for classrooms.

The bike and walking track out of the school is still in the early days, with final costs and plans yet to be finalised.

Ben is positive the funding for the school will continue, and is wanting to help out with projects to come.

“It’s kind of like a triage role; I try to figure out what’s next for them, and how to get the most out of high school,” Patrick says.

The exciting opportunity of having a person that is specifically there to work with young people was provided by VIBE, through funding from the Ministry of Social Development.

“We’ve got about 22 people involved at the moment and a lot of people

are coming down who are disconnected in school, but only time will tell…I know there will be a really positive outcome,” Patrick says.

He says there have also been a couple of students come for help on their own accord.

Wainuiomata High School has been highly focused on achievement, helping its students succeed and pass their exams through its tracking and mentoring processes.

With the work the school’s careers faculty does in making students aware of future directions, and the work youth coach and guidance staff do, principal Martin Isberg says: “I think students from Wainuiomata High School have a range of op-

portunities available to them so that they can lead positive, fulfilling and productive lives once they leave us.”

Through the programme there is also an incentive for students to get their drivers licence.

At this stage, Patrick is here for good and is looking forward to making a difference in the community through helping young people living there.

New doctor in town

Having helped people in places such as England, Jordan and even at Mount Everest Base Camp, Pat Heath has seen the world. But now the general practitioner’s next adventure led him here to Wainuiomata.

Our reporter Dan Whitfield caught up with him to talk about all things medicine, where he started, and what led him to Wainuiomata.

Pat and his partner relocated to New Zealand a few months ago and although only new to his role at Whai Oranga O Te Iwi Health Centre, he is ready to embrace the community spirit.

He has taken control of the list of clients left by the person he replaced.

The young doctor worked at the Royal London Hospital prior to moving to New Zealand, but says he has always wanted to come and work here.

“Medicine is medicine. It’s interesting…But I guess it was the challenge that attracted me to New Zealand. It’s a different culture and community to what I have been used to,” he says.

Pat formally worked in with cliental of lower-socioeconomic residents and those with a family background from another

country.

“Things here are similar but different at the same time…

Everyone has been really friendly and I’m looking forward to getting to know the locals around the community,” he says.

Living in Wellington, he makes the trip out to the valley each morning, greeting the friendly staff ready to help the people of Wainuiomata.

Since being in New Zealand, he has been settling into the Kiwi way-of-life and exploring the country as best as he can.

He says he’s been exploring the Wellington region, including Wainuiomata; as well as making it up to New Plymouth recently.

inbriefnews Gang Show 2014 to grace Hutt theatres Gang Show is fun musical theatre for all the family staged by the Scouts and Guides of the Hutt Valley and Wellington area.

The show features modern and traditional songs, dance and sketches and is performed by a cast of 76 youth and adults.

Appeal needs area co-ordinator

By Dan Whitfield The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation (NZBCF) is on the hunt for enthusiastic locals to help with its upcoming Pink Ribbon Street Appeal.

Each year thousands of people give up their time, whether that is simply an hour or two, to help with the nationwide appeal, and this year the foundation urgently needs an area coordinator in Wainuiomata.

The area coordinator manages a small team of volunteers, overseeing Wainuiomata’s collection points – Countdown, The Warehouse and Wainuiomata Shopping Centre.

“The area coordinator is a vital role – we can’t run our appeal in Wainuiomata without one,” says Kim Van Duiven, NZBCF project manager.

“We would be so grateful if someone could step up and help out this October,” she says.

Volunteers will be part of the 7500-strong ‘pink army’ of collectors raising money at more than 1000 collection points, covering New Zealand from top to bottom.

New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation chief executive Van Henderson says: “Breast cancer is still by far the number one cancer affecting Kiwi women of all ages – I can’t wait for the day when we no longer need to raise these funds, but sadly that’s a long way off.”

This year the appeal is set to be held over October 10 and 11, and the NZBCF will supply a detailed briefing, along with a roster of volunteer collectors, street permits and all the materials necessary to run a successful appeal.  Anyone interested in volunteering is advised to call Kim Van Duiven on 09 304 0969 or email kimv@nzbcf. org.nz.

Bag designs come to life Sally Bird, 13, and Orla Langdon, 11, were excited when they got to see their Keep Hutt City Beautiful bag designs transformed from a drawing to the real thing.

As part of the competition, the girls were asked to design reusable bags to be printed and sold in stores around the Hutt Valley.

The two students are from Muritai School in Eastbourne, but were among 559 other entrants from 25 schools in Lower Hutt – including Wainuiomata schools.

The competition asked students to create designs that represent what ‘Hutt City would look like without plastic bags’.

Event coordinator Micheline Evans says the idea behind this competition was to highlight the issue that plastic bags are harmful to our environment as they are often blown into waterways and end up in the ocean.

“We hope the public supports this initiative by purchasing the reusable bags and in turn help us to ‘Keep Hutt City Beautiful’ by cutting down on their usage of plastic bags,” Micheline says.

Pokie machine battle splits Council

By Amanda Herrera, Whitireia journalism student The battle over Lower Hutt’s pokie machines is at a stalemate after councillors were split over a new policy, and Mayor Ray Wallace would not use his casting vote.

The council was voting this week on allowing gambling outlets in high deprivation areas to relocate to gambling hubs in central Hutt and Petone without losing any machines.

The current bylaw states the number would be reduced from 18 to nine if an outlet moved.

Councillors were split between those agreeing with the changes, and those who wanted to see a sinking lid policy on the valley’s 510 pokie machines.

The sinking lid policy means when venues close down, pokie machines are removed and the licence is lost.

Mayor Wallace declined to place his casting vote, stressing the importance of a unanimous vote, despite an outcry from councillors wanting to push through the amendments on the night.

“We wouldn’t be moving forward as a council if we’re at a split decision,” he said at the meeting in Wainuiomata recently.

Deputy Mayor David Basset acknowledging the work during consultation period, called the council to trust the policy and regulatory subcommittee’s vote which recommended the council adopt the change.

“We need to trust the subcommittee has the best interest for the community. We need to trust them and all the work they’ve put in,” he says.

Councillor Michael Lulich, part of the subcommittee, who supported the relocation policy had a change of heart in front of his colleagues.

He switched his support during the debate to support the sinking lid policy.

Mr Lulich says he would not be keeping in line with his duties as a councillor if he did not support the sinking lid.

“I was elected to protect the community. My job as councillor is to protect the community from harm,” he says.

Voting against the relocation policy, councillor Campbell Barry said it merely allows bars to relocate to a new area, “suck the blood out of the community, then relocate to the CBD, entrenching itself and creating a gambling hub”.

Chair subcommittee Margaret Cousins said the topic of pokie machines in Lower Hutt was a highly complex area with no perfect outcome.

“There is no utopia, it’s how we best handle it,” she says.

Grigg named ambassador

By Dan Whitfield Autism New Zealand has appointed one of Wainuiomata’s own as one of its new ambassadors – all part of a new programme launched by the organisation recently.

Mike Grigg was one of 11 that were selected for the opportunity, making it through a nomination process. He joined two others from Wellington – Jeff Hermes and Robina Reid.

“They’re looking for good advocates…People who will help create the education between Autism New Zealand and the community,” Mike says.

This is the first time the organisation has appointed people into ambassador roles, picking those who have an association with Autism. Mike was also invited

by the organisation to attend this year’s Autism New Zealand Conference in Nelson recently.

“It is a great opportunity,” he says.

Ambassadors will advocate learning’s and experiences from the conference back into both their local communities and through national networks.

“It was really successful. I got a lot out of the conference and learnt different things from the guest speakers… It’s given me a bit more confidence on what I can bring back and implement in Wainuiomata,” he says.

Mike says he is now focused on creating a Wainuiomata group that will help to support people with Autism and create a community-wide understanding.

Chief executive Dane Dougan says it is great to have this

initiative off the ground and get it underway.

“We anticipate this programme starting slowly and with success we hope we can make this a more permanent initiative,” Dane says.

Mike says members of the conference, including people from Autism New Zealand, were interested in his safety plan that he submitted to Hutt City Council earlier in the year.

Dear Ed, In last week’s Wainuiomata News, you asked for feedback on what kind of events that resident would like to see the new church venue used for.

I think it’s a great idea to see if we can secure the Stage Challenge and J Rock competitions which are held annually. It would encourage the school to get involved and send teams as well.

Another thing I’d love to see come to Wainuiomata are performances that would normally go to the likes of the Little Theatre in Lower Hutt.

We need our own venue for our own, plus other events. This is going to be so good for the community. Hopefully more people will start coming over the hill a bit more.

Education the focus Education Minister Hekia Parata set some time aside to visit to Wainuiomata last week.

Meeting locals of all ages, she stopped in at Arakura School and Wainuiomata Marae to speak about education in the area.

Children at Arakura School were on their best behaviour during the visit with teachers interested in the discussions about the minister’s focus on acheivement levels for Maori and Pasifika children. She also ad-

dress the principal and board at the school.

About 40-50 kaumatua were present at the marae meeting. There was also a discussion which allowed kaumatua to ask questions.

Minister Parata also recently started the process of calling for expressions of interest from all schools who want to work together as Communities of Schools – to assist with the Government’s $359 million initiative to lift student achievement.

Camera live?

Dear Ed, I see the new speed camera has been installed at the top of the hill. Do we know if it’s live yet?

I’ve seen numerous vehicles speeding up and over the hill still, and I am hoping they soon realise that they can’t do this anymore.

Would it be possible for a follow up article on it and when it will be operational?

Maybe even chat to local police and see what their opinion is on the camera?

History on view

By Dan Whitfield Old memorabilia, including ammunition casings, postcards or medals from World War One is being sought after by the men and women setting up a display at Wainuiomata Historical Museum.

So far the Wainuiomata Historical Society has secured a number of items, postcards and letters for the commemorative display that is set to coincide with New Zealand’s First World War centenary – running from 2014-2018.

Museum president Gavin Wallace says the society has got quite a good collection but it needs more support from the Wainuiomata community to help.

“We’re looking for all sorts of stuff that might be tucked away in family memorabilia…Anything to do with people from Wainuiomata who were in the First World War,” Gavin says.

The display is set to run for months and

will overtake usual items on show at the museum.

Gavin tells the Wainuiomata News interesting stories from fallen soldiers, including the four that were missing from the cenotaph, will be on view.

“They’re so interesting. Lots of them were affected by the war. There’s an amazing story behind each one,” he says.

Following a lot of research, the 24 ‘Wainui Boys’ who were involved in the war will have their stories told, including; the five that died during the war, nine that were discharged as no longer fit for service, four that subsequently died prematurely, and one that took his own life.

The display has been funded through the Hutt City Council’s heritage fund, and will officially open on September 27 at 2pm.

Gavin says the community is invited to attend the launch and its commemorative World War One exhibition.

Young stars get on stage Young and upcoming actresses Amelia and Bronte Walshe embraced their inner von Trapp and graced the stage as The Sound of Music opened in Wellington on Friday.

The two Lower Hutt girls were selected out of hundreds of other children from around New Zealand, and join four others from the Wellington region as the Kiwi cast for the production.

Amelia, who also got to star in the production of Annie earlier this year, was given the chance to get up on stage once more staring as Marta; while Bronte got the part of Gretl.

The Sound of Music, a Andrew Lloyd Webber and David Ian production, features an unforgettable score that includes some of the most famous songs ever performed on the musical stage. These include My Favorite Things,

Edelweiss, and the title song The Sound of Music.

It tells the uplifting true story of Maria, the fun-loving governess who changed the lives of the widowed Captain von Trapp and his seven children by re-introducing them to music, culminating in the family’s escape across the mountains from Austria.

Wellington’s season of the musical runs from September 12 out of the St James Theatre.

Bridge welcomed by Mayor Mayor Ray Wallace has welcomed the news of an over bridge at the summit of Wauinuiomata Hill saying: “Council is committed to a pedestrian and bike friendly region, and we’re pleased to be building up a safe and well-connected network. This overbridge fits well into our wider plans and vision.”

The announcement of the project came after an agreement from the NZ Transport Agency to co-fund the bridge with Hutt City Council.

The bridge is expected to be completed by June next year and has a budget of $820,000, with the NZTA to provide a 58 per cent subsidy.

There are plans for two further stages to this project for improving the Wainuiomata Hill for pedestrian and cycle access, which will be considered in council’s future annual plans.

Divisional manager road and traffic Ron Muir says: “We know there are a lot of pedestrians and cyclists who use this area and people crossing the road at the crest of the hill is a safety concern for us.”

Business success celebrated at awards Hutt Valley Chamber of Commerce will be celebrating business excellence of more than 30 companies at its annual awards in Novemeber.

Chief executive Mark Futter says the black tie event will be attended by more than 500 guests and will be a true celebration of business enterprise in the Hutt Valley.

“Business in the Hutt Valley has been

through some tough times in the past few years and the companies short-listed for the awards have displayed flexibility and a commitment to meeting market demand through innovation and responding to customer needs,” Mark says.

“Commercial activity in the Hutt Valley is above average and we see the potential for future growth,” he says.

Funding for $92,000 welcomed by Baring Head

By Dan Whitfield Friends of Baring Head, a group that monitors the spectacular headland on the coast south of Wainuiomata, has been granted $92,000 to keep doing what it has been doing so well over the past few years.

The funding comes from the Community Grants Partnership Fund to implement the first three years of a decade-long biodiversity action plan for Baring Head – which has been developed by the friends and the Greater Wellington Regional Council over the past year or so.

Colin Ryder, treasurer for Friends of Baring Head says the new stage of funding will enable the group to: fence off sensitive areas; extend the animal pest control across the block to include cats, possums and rodents; protect and restore two lizard and invertebrate habitat hotspots on the river escarpment.

He says it is also set to help restore three oxbows on the river flats as well as five riparian sites on the Wainuiomata River; and intensively manage two banded dotterel sites on the coastal platform.

As part of funding, the restoration of the lower Wainuiomata River terraces and wetlands and enhancing aquatic habitat will initially focus on restoring native vegetation

Hundreds of buggies are set to stroll through the Wellington Botanic Gardens on the first Thursday in October as part of Sport Wellington’s Big Annual Buggy Walk.

Now in its ninth year, the walk is the largest of the free buggy walks organised; with events take place at a different location every month.

The walk begins at The Dell before setting off to explore the surrounding gardens and bush tracks.

Two walking tracks which vary in difficulty are mapped out, both of which loop back around to The Dell for more festivities.

The free event is run in association with a number of partners and sponsors and a number of giveaways and competitions will be running throughout the day. Kev the Kiwi, Fairy Felicity and a jazz band will keep the young ones busy with activities and entertain-

ment.

Event organiser James King says: “It’s a lovely time of year at the gardens, we’re lucky to be able to provide our participants with such a picturesque environment to get out and get active with their little ones.”

Participants are advised to arrive around 9.45am, with the walk set to take off at 10.30am. Sport Wellingtons Big Annual Buggy Walk will be held on October 2.

Cervical screening month What is cervical cancer?

The two main types of cervical cancer are:  squamous cell cancer  glandular cell cancer.

Squamous cell cancer is the most common form of cervical cancer and is found in about 80 percent of cases.

Abnormal changes are found in the squamous cells of the transformation zone, where the

vagina meets the cervix. (See figure below) Glandular cell cancer is found in the glandular cells, sometimes called columnar cells or endocervical cells, which line the cervical canal (See figure below) and is found in about 15 percent of cases.

Cervical cancer usually grows very slowly, taking 10

or more years to develop. It starts when some cells on the surface of the cervix become abnormal.

These abnormal pre-cancerous cells may return to normal by themselves. In a small number of cases, they may develop into cancer if not treated.

It is impossible to tell which abnormal pre-cancerous cells will return to normal and which may become cancer. This is why all abnormal cells must be followed up.

If women have regular smear tests, there is a high chance that any abnormal pre-cancerous cells will be found and treated long before they develop into cancer.

September is cervical screening awareness month, which is a good reminder to have a new test done.

A woman’s best protection against developing cervical cancer is making time for regular tests.

A cervical smear test is a screening test to find abnormal changes in the cells of the cervix. Having regular smear tests can reduce a woman’s risk of developing cervical cancer by 90 per cent.

All women who have ever been sexually active should have regular cervical smear tests from the time they turn 20 until they turn 70.

Women who have had a total hysterectomy don’t usually need to have smear tests unless advised to do so.

Cervical smears are available from general practitioners or nurses, marae-based or other Maori health centres, Pacific and women’s health centres, and Family Planning clinics.

The cost of a smear test is similar to the cost of seeing a doctor or nurse.

Some community organisations offer a free or low-cost service.

SEPTEMBER IS CERVICAL SCREENING AWARENESS MONTH Regular cervical smear tests are recommended every 3 years for women aged 20-70 years.

An ingrown nail (onychocryptosis) is a common problem that occurs when the edge of the nail begins to grow into the skin. It is most commonly seen in the big toe on either side of the nail but can occur on smaller nails as well and takes many victims! This is a painful condition that initially is of little concern. However, as the nail grows the offending portion of nail penetrates further into the surrounding soft tissue and if left untreated can lead to considerable pain, inflammation and may even result in an infection - not only serious in immune-compromised people but also in a healthy individual.

Some common predisposing factors: • Faulty nail cutting • Tearing of the nails • Moist surrounding soft tissue • Incorrect or pressure from footwear • Hereditary or otherwise individually prone involuted nails • Abnormal weight-bearing force • Poorly fitting footwear • More common in teenager years • Digging around the nail sulci TIP: - Effective clipper technique requires cutting nails following the shape along the end of your toes.

Signs and symptoms that suggest seeking medical advice or a Podiatrist: • Pain or throbbing when touched • The skin surrounding the nail becomes red, shiny, taut in appearance and the toe appears swollen • Or any discharge or bleeding There are several treatments for an ingrown nail. Selection of treatment is made on a case by case basis.

If medical help is required some of the most common Podiatry treatments include: Removal of the offending piece of nail with a scapel or fine nippers OR in more severe cases if the nail does not resolve with conservative treatment nail surgery may be necessary.

Infected ingrown toenails seldom resolve on their own. Having the piece of ingrowing nail removed usually resolves the pain and clears the infection quickly.

Many people will seek help and advice from their Podiatrist, where the nail can be treated relatively painlessly and advice can be given on how to prevent reoccurrence.

In some cases a long-standing infected ingrown toenail can spread to the bone beneath the nail – this is why it’s important to not leave the infection untreated and to seek prompt medical care (especially immune-compromised patients such as a person with diabetes).

TIP: - Things you can do at home to help control/fight infection: Lukewarm water bath: 2 tsp. of salt per 500ml of water (well stirred + dissolved) soak feet for 1015 minutes, dry thoroughly.

With the New Zealand spring weather quite unpredictable, motorists are still being encouraged to be careful on the road.

Driving in the rain can be pretty horrible, but most importantly it can potentially lead to dangerous accidents if drivers are not cautious. Here are some simple and useful tips to help get you to your destination safely.

Check your car Effective brakes, tyres, windscreen wipers, lights and steering are even more crucial in wet weather. Check your vehicle regularly, especially in the winter months to ensure its running in optimal condition.

Adjust your driving Wet, frosty or icy roads can be very slippery. You need to increase your following distance as it takes longer to stop on a slippery surface. You should increase your following distance by using the two-second rule.

Reduce your speed Slow down. People are so used to driving certain speeds on certain roads that they sometimes forget the need to slow down in wet weather. When water mixes

with the oil and dirt on the road it can create slick conditions that encourage skidding. The best way to avoid losing control of your vehicle is to slow down.

Don’t use cruise control Never drive in the rain with cruise control on. If you hydroplane while in cruise control, your vehicle will actually go faster and increase the risk of losing control or skidding.

Use your headlights Turn your headlights on even in a light rain, or overcast conditions.

Not only do they help you see the road, but they’ll help other drivers see you.

Handling a skid If your vehicle is hydroplaning or slipping, don’t step on the brakes abruptly as this can potentially make your vehicle spin even more.

The first thing you should do is remain calm, ease your foot off the accelerator and carefully steer in the direction you want the front of the vehicle to go. This is called “steering into the skid” and will bring the back end of your vehicle in line with the front.

Remember these simple guidelines will help you be safer on wet roads.

inbriefnews Dates set for 2015 event Sport Wellington has announced the date for the 2015 installment of the annual fun run, Round the Bays.

The event is set to take place on February 22, with registrations opening on November 3.

This year over 14,000 people took part in the iconic event which includes a 6.5km fun run, 10km and half marathon, all of which start at Frank Kitts Park and make their way to Kilbirnie Park.

The event raised over $50,000 for the Malaghan Institute of Medical Research.

Working with clubs Project Litefoot, a charitable organisation that works on the crossover between sport and the environment, has been in touch with two Wainuiomatabased clubs.

It was able to go to Wainuiomata and implement a free programme at the golf and tennis clubs.

The lead programme is called LiteClub and involves a field team from the project visiting community sports clubs and making a number of changes to reduce their running costs and free up more money for sport. It also helps reducing the club’s environmental impact.

So far, Project Litefoot has visited 414 clubs, making changes expected to save them a cumulative $2.5 million over the lifetime of the installed products.

Shanice makes Maori u21 team Shanice Toelupe from Wainuiomata High School has been selected for the New Zealand under 21 Maori team which is set to play the Queensland secondary schools squad in early October.

She also joins Kiriana Wairua-Hunter from Sacred Heart, who is a member of the Capital u18 side and Wellington senior women’s squad. She is also part of the New Zealand u21 Maori wider squad.

Wainuiomata’s athlete was a member of the team last year as well.

Both girls play for Eastern-Hutt hockey team that took out the Wellington premier one women’s division for the third year in a row.

Mountain bike series begins PNP Cycling Club’s, the iRide/Specialized Mountain Bike Series 2014 is set to travel around the region offering a number of rounds for all riders.

The series consists of five rounds, with the best four results counting towards a series placing. Riders will be able to compete in over 15 classes to cover all age groups and abilities.

Round one kicked off on Sunday, September 7, at Makara Peak in Karori.

It was a successful event.

Wainuiomata will host round two on September 21. Its round will be held at the Wainuiomata Trail Park.

Gearing up for exchange

By Daniel Whitfield Te Tira Whakaau, Wainuiomata High School’s kapa haka group, is continuing its intensity at trainings in the lead up to a proposed cultural exchange in the United States next year – fundraising along the way.

In 2009, Te Tira Whakaau toured America, visiting places such as Hawaii, Los Angeles and Disneyland, promoting kapa haka and Maori culture. The idea is to create those same opportunities for the group again.

Matauranga Te Rauna, head of the Maori faculty at the high school and also one of the group’s tutors, says the goal is to go back and show people our culture.

“We want to carry on the experience for members of the group. We want to create the opportunity for our group to be the ambassadors of Aotearoa; showing others who we are and what we do,” he says.

It also gives them the opportunity to step up and go overseas to perform, he says.

At this stage there are about 32 people are in the group but only 15-20 performers will be going on the exchange. Four to five adults will also be attending the overseas experience. There are also two students from Lower Hutt involved.

The proposed opportunity to go overseas is set to see them take their culture and sharing it with students over there.

It will also allow them to absorb other cultures and bring it back to New Zealand.

In between practices and stop-ins at the Marae, members of the group will be fundraising in order to make the visit to America a reality; including organising a concert for October.

The concert will be held at State Opera House Wellington.

Celebrations galore

By Dan Whitfield Ulalei Wainuiomata Netball moved from strength to strength this year, following a successful run in the Hutt Valley competition to be crowned champions and its top team qualifying for the Regional Super League and putting in a number of good performances.

President Karen Sagaga says this is the club’s most successful season and a fantastic way to celebrate its 10 year anniversary.

Originally formed in 2004, the club only had one team of 12 people; now in 2014, it has an average of three teams involved in a Hutt Valleybased competition each season.

Similar to this year, the Wainuiomata club has been recognised as one of the top teams in the Hutt Valley competition over the past few years.

Ulalei Wainuiomata Netball is celebrating its 10 year anniversary later this year, and the three committee members would like to see more of community support that was shown during this year’s season.

The prize giving will be on Saturday, September 20. It is set to start at 11am and will be held at Wainuiomata High School gymnasium.

The public is invited, as are all past and present members “Let’s hope we are around for many more years,” Karen told the Wainuiomata News earlier this year.

Captain needed for tennis club Think you have what it takes to be club captain, well then Wainuiomata Tennis Club wants to hear from you.

The club captain position became vacant after a recent annual general meeting which saw nobody raise their hands for the spot.

Club officials say there were

no nominations, yet a club captain is needed.

The club captain holds overall responsibility for the club’s tennis activities, making sure that all players have a programme of tennis throughout the year.

They are the ‘head honcho’ of the match committee and the club needs someone to step up

into the role now, club president Toni Kane.

“We’re really lucky because we’ve already got most of the tennis programme in place,” Toni says.

“The beginning of the season it’s really important because the calendar needs finalising, with the help of the match

committee,” she says.

While Paul Jeffs has done a great job over the past couple of years, he has stepped aside for others to step up.

School tournament shows off best

Groups of students from three schools got their rackets out last week to see who the top primary-aged tennis player in Wainuiomata was.

Wainuiomata Tennis Club opened up its facilities to host the fifth annual Wainuiomata Primary Schools Tennis Tournament – a tournament that was set aside for selected year five and six students showing promising talent in the fast-paced sport.

Schools that sent players to the tournament on Wednesday included Pukeatua and Wainuiomata primary schools, and St Claudine Thévenet School. The aim of the tournament was to introduce children to the game as well as make them familiar with the local club.

It was also set up to support the Hot Shots Programme, which runs at Fernlea, Konini and Wainuiomata primary schools.

School overcame her classmate Brooke Millar in the final of the girls’ competition, taking out the top spot.

She is set to be presented with a trophy at a later date.

In the boys’ division, Aleki Leala and Julian Kaukau battled it out for the top prize. At the end of the finals, Aleki from Wainuiomata Primary School took out first place.

The mid-week tournament enabled school and club officials to identify those with an ability and talent to attend the Hutt Valley Primary Schools Championships held in October.

Both Elesha and Brooke were identified as students that could pose tough opposition in the Hutt Valley event.

Lisa Millar, who helped organise the Wainuiomata event, says each year the club tries to push the competition to be included in the school’s sports calendars as the “children just love it.”
