By Dan Whitfield Wainuiomata drivers are being reminded that stop signs are there for a reason, as local police prepare to enforce a new road safety campaign in the community.

While the campaign was originally set to run from April 17-28, it was put on hold due to unsupported time frames.

However, police have now been given the go-ahead after monitoring showed at least one in four drivers were not stopping properly at intersections.

Hutt to Porirua road discussed Discussions over new link roads between the Hutt Valley and Porirua City were moved into overdrive last week, following a meeting between members of the Wellington Regional Transport Committee (RTC).

Members believed it was appropriate for council chief executive officers around the region to work with the New Zealand Transport Agency, and oversee the improvement of transport links between Hutt Valley and Porirua.

“I certainly acknowledge the real benefits the proposed Petone to Grenada route would provide Hutt City and the wider region, in particular, improved connectivity and the flow-on economic benefits this could bring,” says Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace.

“Of course improved network resilience is also a high priority,” he says.

The committee decided the input

of council officers was critical because the Petone-Grenada (P2G) new link road and the upgrade of SH58 are designed to ensure the needs of communities throughout the region are being met.

Hutt Valley and north Wellington/ Porirua form two key transport corridors that much of the region’s urban development is concentrated around.

These corridors contain the region’s transport connections with the rest of the North Island, including State Highway 1, State Highway 2, the North Island Main Trunk Rail Line and the rail line through to Wairarapa.

At this stage, the only connector between these important corridors is State Highway 58.

“I believe the potential for increased traffic flows along Petone Esplanade as a result make the Cross Valley Link essential and we

are working with NZTA to progress this very important project,” Mr Wallace says.

“However it’s very important to me to hear what our community thinks about the proposal and as the NZTA consults on this proposal I urge the people of Hutt City to have their say,” he says.

The second was The Strand exit with 13 drivers ignoring the rule and 12 rolling through the stop sign where Queen St exits onto Fitzherbert Rd. As an example, Mr Allen says the reason for a stop sign at the end of Queen St is for the safety of pedestrians that use the crossing nearby.

Drivers will also receive 20 demerit points on their licence if they are caught not stopping at intersections.

“The Wainuiomata community regularly raises the issue of stop signs with police so we know they’re keen to see more done to keep their community safe,” he says.

The new road safety campaign will be run by Wainuiomata Police and Hutt City Council staff, and will start over the next few weeks.

Police statistics between 2008 and 2012 show there were 372 injury crashes at intersections on Lower Hutt’s local roads - not including state highways.

Forty-three per cent of those were caused by drivers who failed to give way or stop. Twenty-six of those crashes occurred at intersections in Wainuiomata.

Stars as production closes Lights dimmed and curtains have closed for the last time on Wainuiomata Little Theatre’s 2014 production - Jesus Christ Super Star – as it came to a close recently.

The early 1970s rock opera showcased the last seven days of the life of Jesus Christ, with lyrics by Tim Rice and musical score by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Wainuiomata audiences showed loyalty towards the theatre this year, with the production selling out before opening night; and full audiences for all ten performances.

Directors Barry Paterson and Barbara Wray even believe strangers to the Christian story came to the show and appeared spellbound by the gripping saga laid before them.

Mr Paterson and Ms Wray wove their diverse cast into a cohesive tapestry of players that together, with choreog-

raphy of Catherine Riches and Fran Crossland’s gentle vocal coaching, culminated in a truly sensitive, poignant yet delightful and fun production.

Chris Gordon, who played Jesus, and Bainca Twort, who played Mary, gave moving performances throughout all ten shows.

The demanding part of Judas was played by James Fluker, and Tony Gentle proved to be a popular Pilate.

The deep tones of Shawn Keil as Caiaphas counterbalanced Fran Crossland as a bubbly Herod.

The music accompaniment was provided by Charles Hazelwood on bass; Liam Scrivener and Nigel McAuliffe on guitar; Jan Packer and Yoko Taulelei playing keyboards and Jordan Hotton on drums.

Audience members included Wainuiomata residents and visitors to the valley.

New pants for walkers Students from Pukeatua Primary School that walk to school alongside their fellow peers have been given warm protective pants.

About 30 pairs of pants were gifted to the school through KidsCan, and were given to those involved in walking school buses to and from the Frederick St-based school.

Assistant principal Bridget Robins tells the Wainuiomata News that the pants were donated to the school at the end of term one, with a range of every size to suit all students.

The new clothing additions were put to good use in the first week of term two.

Music month promoted by station

By Dan Whitfield Wainuiomata’s locally based radio station is backing both local and national artists this month, playing more kiwi music than ever before.

Nui FM, which broadcasts over the 87.9 frequency, was developed by volunteers living in Wainuiomata.

It runs out of the Wainuiomata Community Centre and caters for an audience of around 4,000 residents, aged between 18 and 60; playing music ranging from hip hop and RnB, to old school rock ballads.

It also supports local and Maori talent, with bands such as Horifyde Selection and The Noise promoted through Nui FM. Teeze Stevens, who is also known as DJ Teeze, is getting behind New Zealand Music Month.

She has been a volunteer at the station for about six years and is pleased with the support it gives local and kiwi music, especially in the month of May. “We’re really not restricted with what we play, but we do like to support people from Wainui,” DJ Teeze says.

“We use the station to promote the positives

and get our tamariki involved,” she says.

Community operations manager Tupou Kuma says the presenters are trying to play as many New Zealand artists as they can.

“A big thing for us is the promotion of local talent, as well as up and coming artists…In the community there is a lot of talent,” Ms Kuma says.

With help from the local station, Horifyde Selection has also be able to release its own start-up EP album.

The radio station also provides DJ training opportunities for people wanting to learn the art of being a presenter.

Currently there are five youth presenters and eight adults doing radio shows.

New Zealand Music Month is a promotion run by the New Zealand Music Commission that takes place each May. The month is dedicated to kiwi music and encourages radio stations to play more local tunes, as part of the 31 day celebration of homegrown talent around the country.

NZ Music Month kick started in 2000 and since then has grown immensely.

Forty-hour famine kicks off again Wainuiomata kids are gearing up for the 40th annual 40 Hour Famine, set to run later this weekend.

More than 2.5 million Kiwis have participated in what is arguably New Zealand’s most successful and iconic fundraising drive, over the past four decades, and about $72 million has been raised for World Vision’s emergency and sustainable development work.

This year’s 40 Hour Famine will begin at 8pm on Friday, May 23, and will end at midday Sunday, May 25.

Money raised will go to Malawi in south-east Africa, which is in the midst of a severe food crisis brought on by extreme weather conditions.

Wainuiomata Primary School has been registered for the daily KickStart Breakfast initiative for a few months, but so far teachers have had nothing to serve the food up to students on.

Last Friday, The Warehouse came to the school’s aid; donating 100 sets of plates, bowls, knives, forks, and cups towards the many breakfasts set to be enjoyed by students.

Deputy principal Allison Burdon says it is great that the community has supported us so the school could get its breakfast club rolling.

“While our programme is open to all students, we realise there is the opportunity to cater for those students that miss out on breakfast,” Wainuiomata Primary School principal, Neil Worboys says.

The Warehouse service team leader Paige Beattie says sets were donated through help from The Warehouse’s Bags for Good programme.

The KickStart Breakfast also provides leadership opportunities for the school’s senior students that help with the programme, assisting the younger students who arrive for breakfast.

With breakfast dubbed as the most important meal of the day, staff from Arakura School believe they have seen the value that it brings to students each day.

Arakura principal Mark Kibblewhite say it has had a “positive effect” with many more motivated to learn.

While term two is a short one, primary school students from Wainuiomata have not been left with limited opportunities to step up or get out and about.

Arakura School principal Mark Kibblewhite says there is quite a bit going on, including a chance for parents and teachers to make suggestions on how to improve the school.

Dowse Square wins national award The popular Dowse Square, located at the heart of Hutt City’s Civic Centre, has won a New Zealand Architecture Award.

Athfield Architects designed the square, which the jury of judges described as a project in which, “civic seriousness has been leavened with playful delight” to produce “a refreshing and sustaining community asset.”

Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace says Dowse Square is an area of important development for Hutt City in the years to come.

“It is heartening to see the square being nationally recognised as a ‘refreshing and

sustaining community asset,” he says.

Director of The Dowse Art Museum Courtney Johnston says it gives the perfect venue for large scale community events such as Big Day Dowse and offers a flexible community space for smaller events too.

Dowse Square received one of only three awards given in the planning and urban design category.

Ms Johnston accepted the award at a ceremony in Auckland recently.

The New Zealand Architecture Awards is a programme supported by the New Zealand Institute of Architects.

Pukeatua Primary School has received acknowledgement for its bright and vibrant entry into the Hutt schools’ MuralArt competition.

Run by Hutt City Council, more than 400 people gathered at Dowse Square last Wednesday to hear which of the 46 schools involved had won.

Earlier in the year, student artists were asked to create mural panels depicting what they loved most about Hutt City.

The eye-catching panels were recently installed around Hutt City Council’s administration building on Laings Road, which has become a construction site while the buildings are earthquake strengthened over the next two years.

Art work created by the Wainuiomata students was recognised through the Builders Choice Awards, seeing them win $100 for their school.

Winners were judged by Lower Hutt Mayor Ray Wallace and regional manager of Naylor Love Construction Nick Clayton.

“I’m so impressed with the murals; it was a very hard job judging them,” says mayor Ray Wallace.

“The students were asked to investigate and develop their own ideas, and look at how places are significant for different people. The murals are a celebration of how vibrant and diverse our communities are and show just what a great place it is for kids to grow up here,” he says.

Council and Naylor Love invited schools to take part in the project over the past few months, with all school students working hard on their entries.

“It has been a privilege to be part of this exciting community

project and to be working with schools across the city demonstrating their talents,” says Mr Clayton.

“I am blown away by the amazing creativity displayed by our up and coming Picassos.

The children and schools have every right to feel proud of their contribution in making this area a bright and colourful display of art and illustrate so effectively what they love about Hutt City,” he says.

In the primary school division, major prizes went to Dyer Street School, which came first; Kimi Ora, took second; and Koranui School placed third.

As part of the intermediate section, first place went to Avalon Intermediate, second prize was awarded to Muritai School, and third to St Oran’s.

The Builders Choice Awards also went to Hutt Intermediate and St Michael’s School (Taita).

Fixing our rivers

The meeting was about discussing the health of Wainuiomata River and finding out what locals thought about recent issues – including a swimming hole near Richard Prouse Park exceeding suitable levels of E coli, earlier in the year.

Greater Wellington Regional Council’s senior environmental scientist Summer Greenfield says that March was a particularly bad month with most of the bad readings recorded.

She says the council expected to see higher E coli levels after heavy rain, so the high levels in dry times

The main focus of GWRC was on the swimming hole in Richard Prouse Park, which is a popular swimming spot in the community.

Greater Wellington Regional Council and the Hutt City Council

have been testing smaller creeks and streams that feed the Wainuiomata River, including those that flow from Moores Valley and Skerrits Creek.

“Skerrits Creek has high E Coli levels and Wainuiomata Stream is consistently tested,” says Mrs Greenfield. There was also a consistant reading of human and animal.

Hutt City Council trade waste manager Gordon George says septic tanks may be part of the problem as there are 400 tanks in the Hutt Valley and 100 of them are in Moores Valley.

During the meeting, Mr Barry gave the public an opportunity to say what they want done.

The result was the want for both councils to look at the bigger picture, not just a limited bit of Wainuiomata River.

Re-introduced kiwi bird killed by dog

A kiwi that was re-introduced into parkland near Wainuiomata has been killed by a dog – and with that, its potential to produce upward of 20 chicks.

The kiwi, a three old male, was born in Christchurch a week after the February 2011 earthquake. It was given the Maori name for Christchurch, Otautahi, and held an important key to the population of the native species in the Rimutaka Forest Park.

Native trees replace shrubs and blackberries

The wetlands at Waiu Park have been getting a makeover thanks to the international group, A Rocha.

A Rocha is a Christian group that is working around the world on conservation projects, with Waiu Park one of the group’s latest projects.

Its mission at the park was to get rid of all the blackberry bushes and replace them with native trees.

Group member Pene BurtonBell says that they have been working in the area for the last three years and that she is happy with the work the group has done so far.

“We are trying to clear as far as the stream, which runs just behind the park,” Mrs Burton-Bell says.

The group meets every third Saturday of each month and she says that they are always looking for more members.

“Everyone is welcome. They

don’t have to be Christian, they just [have to] want to improve the look of the area,” she says.

About half a dozen people have been part of working on the area during recent cleanups.

Hutt South MP Trevor Mallard has been bumped up his party’s list ranking as well as receiving extra responsibilities within Labour.

Mr Mallard, who represents Wainuiomata, is now ranked number 15 – going from a previously unranked position in the Government party. The new roles added to his repertoire were immigration and economic development.

He is also the Spokesperson for Internal Affairs, sport and recreation, animal rights as well as being the spokesperson on the America’s Cup. He is also the Associate Spokesperson for Finance.

Labour leader David Cunliffe promoted Mr Mallard after he was somewhat pushed away as a result of a previous reshuffle.

The recent promotion is set to help Mr Mallard keep his Hutt South profile, after it was estimated

Health care on the move

People wanting to talk to the mayor and councillors about their Draft Annual Plan submission are encouraged to act quickly.

More than 600 submissions have already been received and with numbers up on previous years, the two day hearing appointments where people can speak in person, are filling fast.

Tony Stallinger, Hutt City Council Chief Executive says, “We are extremely encouraged by the unprecedented interest from people wanting to provide feedback on our Draft Annual Plan in person.

This year, the council’s plan focuses on rejuvenation, with more than 30 projects included.

Some of these have generated significant community attention, which is why we have so much interest.”

Doctors from Hutt City Health Centre (Wainuiomata) believe relocating at the end of the month will help create a more modern practice for patients and open up the potential of future growth.

Earlier this year, staff at the health centre were given two months to find another suitable location to set up a new surgery, ahead of the lease on its current premises ending on May 31.

The practice’s Philip Harrison says they had been looking at multiple places but settled on a facility across the road from where it is now – in between Hammer Hardware and a dentist.

“It’s about looking at a big vision that is perhaps one to three years down the track,” Mr Harrison says.

Hutt City Health Centre (Wainuiomata) currently has four doctors and two nurses operating out of one building, and on June 1 when it opens its new premises opens, the same

situation will apply.

The new building is undergoing renovations to accommodate the practice and Mr Harrison says the new centre will operate as normal, with specific rooms for doctors and nurses.

“It’s an exciting change and everything is ticking along,” Mr Harrison says.

While the move is the main thing staff at the Wainuiomata health centre are focusing on at the moment, the long term goal is to create an up-to-date surgery catering for patients both young and old.

Currently the number of patients at the health centre is about 1950, and over the past few months it has gained a few more.

“The plan is to grow to 4000 patients and look at creating a more modern health centre,” he says.

There is also set to be a new single phone number introduced for both the Lower Hutt and Wainuiomata locations.

The new number is 576 2009.

The annual Wainuiomata 6hr Wurldz was once again a hit, with the biggest turn out in the event’s history.

More than 200 riders from around the Wellington region took part on Sunday, racing at individual times around the tracks of the Wainuiomata Trail Project (WTP) above Parkway.

Organiser Evelyn Williamson says it was a great day and increased the public’s awareness of the WTP. “There was a bit of rivalry among some of the more serious riders but it was still a fun, family-focused event...

Everyone had a good day,” Ms Williamson says.

The best dressed team was Team Yabba Dabba from Wainuiomata.

It has been a colourful few weeks at Pukeatua School, with students given the opportunity to unleash the artist within.

About 40 students from Tutake Kaha (junior school) took part in a whanau painting night to create pieces of art for a school project to make the grounds more vibrant.

Assistant principal Bridget Robins says the works of art will be used to decorate the school’s pool walls.

art pieces with an overall theme focusing on ‘What is important to me?’

Ms Robins says the students from rooms five and seven really got involved in the opportunity, with parents helping their children as well.

“Some students painted family members, others painted things that were personal to them,” says Ms Robins.

The student art work is set to be installed over this term and will enhance the areas surrounding the school pool.

Wainuiomata’s Alan Swinn is truly passionate about cars and his project that has stretched over thirty years confirms this status.

Mr Swinn is the lucky owner of an old school 1964 EH Holden Panel Van – that he believes is unofficially one of the oldest owned custom cars in his local community.

“I started building it in 1981 from an empty body...I did all the work myself and it’s very modified,” Mr Swinn says.

The Wainuiomata car enthusiast’s custom classic has a worked Holden 308 engine with an M21 four-speed transmission, giving it lots of power.

The Holden panel van also has a full fibre glass tilt front, with twin headlights which are from a Ford 315.

“Most people think it’s a factory extra,” he says.

Over the years, Mr Swinn has installed a number of other aftermarket parts including new front suspension, vented disk brakes, as well as rack and pinion steering – adding to the custom look and feel to the car.

In the last few months, he has also had new 17 inch wheels added, completing the appearance of the old school Holden.

His dream car is a Lamborghini Countach. “They are just the best looking car ever,” he says.

There is a long list of cars that Mr Swinn has owned since he got married, including an 105e Prefect, a MkIII Cortina station wagon, VL Commodore and a Nissan Primera – which he still drives.

“My first car I owned in 1972 was a MkI Ford Zephyr 6. I really liked that car, it was so cool and a fast car,” he says.

Mr Swinn plans to get the car repainted over the next two years, ready to enter it in a specific Holden car show.

“I have raced it in the Wallaceville Hill climb; and I also do gymkhanas...They are so much fun,” Mr Swinn says.

One day he wants to take the Holden to the Masterton drags and have a go.

The total length of ownership is currently sitting at 34 years and Mr Swinn says he tries to use it as much as possible.

“I think if you own a modified car you should drive it as much as you can, get it dirty, and have lots of fun with it...There too many show cars that just sit in the garages and never get driven,” he says.

Sniff of a draw Wainuiomata AFC women’s side did well against top of the table counterparts Island Bay, however lost four points to two.

Gemma Krebs scored a breakaway goal in the fifteenth minute following an even start.

Wainuiomata held the 1-nil lead until half time.

Island Bay came out fighting in the second half and put a lot of pressure on Wainuiomata’s defence, scoring in the fifty-fifth minute.

The women conceded two goals quickly after that before Krebs pounced on a mistake by Island bay and slotted the ball past their keeper making it 3-2.

Wainuiomata was hopeful at this stage, sniffing at a possible draw, but Island Bay’s attack got a lucky break and scored.

The final score was 4-2 to Island Bay.

School cross country event Students from St Claudine Thevenet School got into their competitive spirits yesterday, taking part in the school’s cross country event.

The term two-based cross country was brought forward by staff, as the weather forecast was not looking good for its original date of Wednesday.

Parents and supporters were there to cheer on the young athletes, with students supporting their fellow peers.

Closing in on the Jubilee Cup

By Aaron Meredith Another victory and a cameo by one of the valley’s favourite sons, sent Wainuiomata rugby fans home happy on Saturday.

Piri Weepu helped Wainuiomata to a 23-10 victory over Johnsonville at William Jones Park - a victory that almost certainly puts the locals into the Jubilee Cup. The home side took advantage of Johnsonville’s ill discipline early on with Tyler Tane, kicking two penalties for a 6-nil lead.

Johnsonville’s second five-eighth Hadleigh Parks then scored a try, giving Johnsonville a 7-6 lead.

Another penalty to Johnsonville made the score 10-6 until a try to Wainuiomata flanker Greg Lealofi left the score 11-10 at half time.

Wainuiomata dominated the second half, creating most of the plays and taking their chances well.

Two tries to winger Jason Love gave Wainuiomata the victory which leaves the side in third place on 28 points - needing one more victory to guarantee qualification for the Jubilee Cup. The Wainuiomata scrum dominated the visitors all day, creating good ball for the local backs and forcing mistakes from Johnsonville.

One concern for the club will be the state of William Jones Park, with the new drainage system not working at all this week.

In other games, the senior firsts had their first win of the year, taking down Wests 27-nil.

A strong second half saw the women’s side pull away to a strong win over OBU counterparts, 36-12.

Next week the premier side plays Hutt Old Boys Marist at Hutt Recreation Grounds. Kick off is at 2.15pm.

A victory will see Wainuiomata qualify for the Jubilee Cup.

Colts on form for 2014 season

Originally the game was to be hosted by

Wainuiomata, but was shifted away, to be played at Petone Recreation Grounds.

Wainuiomata had a slow start to the game but in the end gave the spectators a performance worth watching.

Funds needed for club roof A new roof is needed at Wainuiomata Tennis Club and president Toni Kane says fundraising for it is going well.

The roof on the clubrooms has been in need of replacement for a number of years and so far the club has raised about $3,500. It has also managed to secure $3,500 through grants.

Ms Kane says the aim is to raise $12,000 to pay for the much needed roof renovations.

With both teams trading penalties throughout the game, the score was locked up at 8-all.

Wainuiomata went on to score a further three tries awarded to Peter Tunupopo, Jayden Kohika and Joel Kreiss.

The local men in green scored four tries to three on Saturday, with the final score left at 27-20.

Players of the days went to Trei Mu, Jayden Kohika and Fa’avea Lemau.

This win sees the Wainuiomata Colts go through the first round of the competition undefeated.

The team’s Sven Johnson says: “We would like to thank all the supporters that have come to all our games. We couldn’t have done this without their support.”

Wainuiomata Colts are sponsored by Firestone. The side goes into round two promoted to the next division.

Wellingtonians head to Wainuiomata More than 400 athletes were attracted to the Orongorongo Valley for the second and most technical event of the XTERRA Wellington trail running series recently.

Good weather, stunning scenery and amazing native bush provided the perfect atmosphere for the round on May 11, with trail runners taking part in three optional distances on the day.

Wainuiomata’s under 85kg rugby team suffered a rather muddy loss to Johnsonville on Saturday.

The side was aggressive from the get-go, however lack of discipline and structure saw the Johnsonville side gain momentum – crossing the line multiple times.

Wainuiomata’s only try was the result of strong forward movement near the try line.

The final score on Saturday was 28-5.

The game was played at Ian Galloway Park, near Karori.

Sunday’s short distance was 7km of mixed flat easy running with some short up-hill portions, helping provide athletes with a good introduction to the sport.

The popular medium distance covered about 12km including a climb up McKerrows revenge.

In the more technical long course, runners challenged themselves with twisting, root hopping trails.

Event organiser Mike Thomason says: “The first rule of Xterra is if someone needs your help, stop and and help them.

“This friendly sportsmanship adds to the enjoyable vibe of the events.

“Despite the gruelling run, everyone finishes with a smile on their face. ‘Great’ and ‘a lot of fun’ are the most common responses when asking athletes

how they found it,” he says.

The four-event XTERRA Wellington trail running series is creating true off-road trail experiences for all levels of runners and walkers, achieved by offering a range of distances at each event.

Other event distances range from 5km to over 20km, with times ranging from 40 minutes to over three hours. Each season the location and trails change, keeping it fresh and challenging for participants.

Mr Thomason urges residents to come have a go and pushes the fact that no previous experience is necessary.

Boxer aims for another title

Wainuiomata boxer Keegan O’Kane-Jones is looking to make it five-in-a-row as he prepares to get back into the ring for a national tournament later this year.

The 16-year-old is currently busy training for this year’s New Zealand Golden Gloves which he has previously won four times; and despite the fact he is stepping up a grade, Keegan is confident he can succeed once again.

“I’m hoping for another win,” Keegan tells the Wainuiomata News.

Keegan began his boxing career at age 12 and has since travelled the world competing in countries like the United States of America, Ukraine and Tahiti – representing New Zealand and his club on several occasions.

To date, the young Wainuiomata boxer has fought in about 34 fights.

At the golden gloves, Keegan is

set to fight in the youth-aged division, with his opponents ranked at a similar level. Although some have more fights under their belts, this does not faze the young boxer.

Naenae Boxing Academy manager Billy Graham says it is all about Keegan.

“He’s a Wainui’ boy who has a great and promising future…I’ve got a passion for the young fighters. It’s about encouraging them and looking after them,” Billy says.

“What we’re doing with Keegan now is helping him tick all of the boxes so that he gets a good boxing career, the best education and support he needs, he says.

Keegan is the un-official top boxer from Wainuiomata and is training Monday to Friday, leading up to the golden gloves tournament. The young Wainuiomata boxer is doing everything from cardio and strength, to speed and power.

“It’s been a great experience so far and Billy is an amazing coach,” Keegan says.

“Boxing has made a difference in my life and I’m so glad I’ve had the support from family.”

He tells the Wainuiomata News his most memorable fight was his second in which he lost to an Australian by one point.

Keegan is also working towards completing a sport and recreation course at WelTec, with the hope of becoming a personal trainer afterwards.

Billy started boxing at Naenae under the tutorship of New Zealand’s legendary coach Dick Dunn when he was eight years old. He was also the winner of four New Zealand titles at light welterweight, plus an Australasian title and the Jamieson Belt.

The New Zealand Golden Gloves tournament will be based in Taupo this year, and is set to run from May 31 to June 3.

Wainuiomata AFC was keen to record a win away from home and did so, after a week of training hard ahead of its clash with Kapiti City United.

The local side took down its Kapiticounterparts 3-1; even though before the game Kapiti were second on the capital one, with the side showing it was not to be messed with.

The first half went to plan and with Wainuiomata taking the lead 2-nil just before half time.

Both of Wainuiomata’s first half goals were scored by Leonardo Serci.

Wainuiomata started the second half slowly and with so, Kapiti were awarded a penalty 15 minutes in, taking the score to 2-1. Despite the point against them, the players did not dwell and pushed forward

to see Joel Evans score. His goal took the score to 3-1.

The game was a great spectacle for the travelling supporters and marked a milestone for club legend Ralph Chenery, who played his 400th game for the first team.

In the club’s other games, the seconds played Island Bay United but lost 4-nil; the Halfbakeds won 5-3 against Porirua City; and the Roundballs won 3-2 when they played Waterside Karori. The Undertakers played Miramar on Monday at Petone Memorial and the Pacifica side was postponed until this Saturday.

Teams need to step up Ulalei Wainuiomata Netball had another unfortunate weekend, with both its teams losing.

The club’s premier one team had a poor start which ultimately cost it the game, losing 48-57 against Maidstone.

Ulalei missed the services of young shooting sensation Tiara Tane, who was sidelined with illness.

Coach Tunis Cook says: “It’s a steep learning curve competing at the next level but the team is tackling the challenge with grit and determination.”

“More accurate passing would help.

There was great pressure in defence by a Chelsea Plumridge, and our player of the

day Teuila Sagaga,” she says.

Despite the loss, the team is looking up with a number of great players involved.

Next week the premier one squad take on Naenae Collegians Blue at Walter Nash Stadium from 11am.

Ulalei premier three lost to top of the table Naenae Collegians (5), also without the services of the team’s regular goal shooter.

The team need to bounce back this week in order to have a chance of promotion to premier two divisions in its next round.

Next week premier three takes on Naenae Collegians (4) on court nine of the Taita Courts. The game begins at 9am.

The number of junior players at Wainuiomata Tennis Club is booming, says president Toni Kane – a potential reason why two prizegivings were needed to acknowledge award winners recently.

In April, about 30 of the club’s members, aged between five and 10 years of age, were presented with club awards. All players were part of the club’s Junior Aces division.

This year the prizegiving ran a little different, with two of the senior members of the club - Antoinette Rivett and Shelley Matheson – leading proceedings for the first time. “[Players] who come to tennis on a Wednesday after school over the summer, each received a participation certificate and medal for their fantastic effort,” Antoinette says.

In the five to seven-year-old age group, the most improved boy was Bronya Parklachief and most improved girl was Tarryn Reay. In the older group, players aged seven to 10, the most improved boy was Ruben Yuile and Cailee Westby was the club’s most improved girl.

The prizegiving for the 10 to 18-year-old junior players was held earlier this month, and saw another large group receive awards.

Junior convenor Julie Day says the club championships, held over the last few weeks, were used to find the top players for the season.

“It was a bit of a juggling act and logistical nightmare finding afternoons without rain – but we
