Expressive faces FINISHING TOUCHES: Artist Bodhi Vincent applies the finishing touches to an impressive art project at Kapiti Coast Airport’s terminal. Kapiti Kids Motivation Trust got over 300 school children from many schools in the district to create concrete masks. A total of 152 of the childrens’ masks, as well as two masks created by Mr Vincent, now adorn a wall near the terminal’s main entrance. There will be an official ceremony on Sunday, June 8 at 11.30am at the site. PHOTO: DAVID HAXTON / KAP050514DHMASKS

Sport circuit supported DAVID HAXTON A wide multi-use paved circuit in Kapiti could be a significant drawcard for locals and outsiders alike, an advocate says. It could be situated on the Howarth block of land, nestled between Otaihanga and Waikanae, which used to be a turf farm but has now been converted into sports fields by the council. Various locals, including some members of the Kapiti Cycling Club, hope council will support the idea in its Long Term Plan. Funding would come via various sources, including grants. ‘‘It’s a long-term project, but one that would be a legacy for future generations if successful,’’ Kapiti Cycling Club acting president Adrian McKenzie said. The hot mix covered circuit, completely separated from the

internal park roads, would be 8m wide and 3km long. It would be available for people of all ages and levels of ability in a range of sports, from novices to elite level, while at the same time catering for the vast numbers of recreational users. ‘‘There is a growing trend around the world, to move cycling training, development and racing facilities away from increasingly busy roads. ‘‘Overseas facilities are generally specifically for cycling, however we are proposing a multi-purpose venue that could be shared with cycling, in-line skating, running, triathlon, Paralympics, skateboard racing, and any other humanpowered wheeled events,’’ he said. ‘‘So the design grows from a combination of overseas developments and own design ideas to make the venue truly multipurpose.’’ There would be one circuit,

but many other circuits within the circuit, he said. ‘‘The benefits of this would be the ability to hold three or four disciplines at once. ‘‘For example, school children could be having cycle lessons at one part of the circuit, in-line skates in another, long boards, paracycling in another, and anything else with wheels powered under human effort, all at once, training at one facility. ‘‘We would be building on existing work, including the internationally acclaimed multi-use pathway/cycleway at New Plymouth, the Toowoomba and Canberra cycleways and other race tracks in Australia, and others currently being developed, and many such circuits in the United Kingdom that have helped turn the United Kingdom into one of the top performers in international cycling.

‘‘The circuit would also benefit a multitude of many other sporting groups, from harriers to multi-sport clubs, that could use this as a start and finish line for running races, triathlons, ironman and the Weet-Bix kids triathlon series and more. ‘‘The circuit would also make a magnificent venue for non-competitive events such as the Relay for Life. ‘‘And when it’s not being used for events, it would be available for recreational users.’’ The district would benefit a lot from the circuit, he said. ‘‘This would be a venue for holding international, regional and local events. ‘‘Integrated with paved cycling and walking access, it would become the hub that links communities. ‘‘It would also serve as a training, development and recreational base for locals of all ages.’’
