By Nikki Papatsoumas “I was happy with them, they could always be better but I am just glad it is over,” says Clare.

“I thought I was going to fail and I didn’t fail anything so that was great,” Sasha says.

Clare says she was awake most of Tuesday night, hoping results would go up after midnight.

“Everyone was hoping that they would be up, it didn’t really go that way, I guess it helped in terms of traffic on the computer,” Clare says.

Last year the NZQA website underwent many issues, including the website overloading, which meant many pupils were not able to view their results online.

ecutive Richard Thornton says this year the release of results was successful with no issues reported.

He says Wednesday was a

St Catherine’s College principal Mary Curran says the school is absolutely delighted with their provisional NCEA results for 2013, and congratulates both students

and staff for their hard work.

“Results show that pass rates of our level one students were above 94 per cent, level two above 88 per cent, and level three at 90 per cent.

“At each level, our percentages of excellence and merit endorsements are also extremely pleasing.”

She says the results show a direct correlation between the hard work put in from both students and staff.

“It also highlights the fact that our small school is able to offer individual learning pathways that are supported by a strong and positive pastoral care system.”

Children helping children in need

By Nikki Papatsoumas While most children these school holidays will soak up the sun at the park or the beach, two girls from Seatoun have decided to do things a little differently.

Eight-year-old Carolyn Macaulay and nine-year-old Waverly Saindon have spent their time making jewellery and running a street stall to raise money for the Wellington Children’s Hospital.

This isn’t the first stall for the business savvy pair, they have previously sold lemonade and cupcakes to raise money for the Wellington SPCA. The best friends have made jewellery out of rubber bands, and plan to keep their stall open until they have filled their homemade cash register with money for the charity.

“We always like to raise money for people,” says Waverly.

“We want to be kind and make people happy.”

iPad release simplifies stop motion movie making

Proposal to lower CBD speed limit In an effort to protect people walking on foot or travelling by bike in Wellington’s CBD, road safety charity Brake has put forward a proposal to lower the speed limit to 30km/h. The public will be able to give feedback on the proposal next month.

The speed limit decrease will cover 64 streets in Wellington’s CBD. Brake’s Chief Executive, Mary Williams says a 30km/h speed limit in the CBD will encourage physical activity and improve safety.

Craig says the book is a great resource for schools who wish to use iPads creatively in classrooms, adding that children are great at making high quality stop motion movies.

“We’ve had teachers tell us that their board has pur-

chased a suite of iPads, and now they have to prove to parents that they are a benefit to leaning, and not just a browsing device,” he says.

The book is available for download from the iBookstore on an iPad or Mac.

Santa stolen from family home

By Nikki Papatsoumas A local family would like to see a life sized singing and dancing Santa that they use to decorate their house for Christmas returned, after it was stolen from their property earlier this year.

The Lyall Bay house, which was adorned with lights over the Christmas period, featured in the Cook Strait News last year.

They have since been in touch, after noticing their Santa went missing sometime on January 5.

Geraldine Donnelly says she and her husband Richard took a look around the street when they noticed it was missing but were unable to find it.

They have also been in contact with the police, and now hope a local may have some information regarding the

whereabouts of the missing Santa.

The family says they would like to see their Santa returned, no questions asked.

“We would like to see it returned, it is worth quite a bit of money and to have to replace it would be really bad,” Geraldine says.

Geraldine says the Santa also has sentimental value for their family.

“Our youngest son always wanted to decorate the house.”

She says although he now lives overseas they decided to carry on the tradition.

Majestic strengthening underway The 22 year old Majestic Centre is now undergoing strengthening work due to its moderate earthquake risk.

A total of $54m will be spent on the building to meet 100 per cent of the earthquake building standard.

Two of the Majestic’s tenants have signed a long-term lease in response to the news.

Craig says the 230-page guide teaches hopeful animators how to weave together story, pictures and sound to create amazing stop motion animations right from the iPad. “This is not just a ‘how to’ book, it is a ‘show me how’ book outlining an affordable low-budget way of achieving quite cool movie effects, but to a standard that is the highest quality that can be achieved,” he says.

For the past five years, Craig has been teaching children how to make movies and stop motion, through the Newtown Movie School.

He spent the past two of these years compiling the book, along with its 26 movies and 500 images.

However, the book’s audio and images were created solely on an iPad, with music created

by Island Bay musician Theo Corfiatis.

Stop-motion is an animation technique which makes static objects appear to move when individual objects are quickly viewed consequently, creating the illusion of movement.

Festival celebrates 30 years Wellington’s oldest annual community event, the Island Bay Festival will celebrate 30 years of fun, fabulousness, diversity and enduring community spirit this February.

Last Friday was the official launch of their new website where users will be able to view information about the more than 50 events being held over the nine day event, which will run from February 9 to 17.

Organisers promise there will be something for everyone with the festival targeted at parents, kids, singles, couples, teenagers, grandparents and everyone in between.

A highlight is the “Day in the Bay” event, which will run on Sunday February 10.

This huge, free community event attracts well over 20,000 people, and offers street market

stalls selling all kinds of local and international products, delicious ethnic food, plus arts and crafts.

This year Shorland Park’s band rotunda will host a day-long concert with Wellington’s top bands.

There is also a new stage area that’ll have amazing, quirky performances such as acrobatic and circus routines, comedy, puppetry and a variety of music.

Community groups will showcase Island Bay’s local historical society, environmental groups and invites you to celebrate in the Bay’s diverse ethnic communities.

There will be two stages of music this year The Rotunda and The Beach stage, which will feature music from performers such as Samuel Flynn Scott, Rio Hemopo, The Wellington Sea Shanty Society, San Souci,

Programmer James Coyle says this year they wanted music to be "as local as possible”.

Goose Shack spread its wings

Chargrill food business, the Goose Shack is spreading its wings to make way for “good, honest food” in the community.

Haydn Turner and his partner Laura Nicholls started their mobile business, The Goose Shack, from the back of their Morris Minor Ute over a year ago.

Ever since, the couple has been catering chargrilled food for private functions as well as attending weekend markets in Newtown and around Wellington’s Harbourside.

Haydn says he was deter-

mined to get the brand rolling and couldn’t pass up on the opportunity to expand the business in Berhampore.

“It’s not just about market food,” Haydn says.

“Our aim is to produce seasonal food and make everything from scratch.”

By mid-February, the mobile Goose Shack will have spread its wings with the completion of the Goose Shack HQ on Adelaide Road.

The Goose Shack is known for experimenting with flavours and using only prime cuts of meat and fish.

Hoppertainment comes to Island Bay

By Anneka Paul Whitireia Journalism Student A lifetime of challenges has been the inspiration behind a photographer’s greatest achievements.

After growing up in Island Bay, John Shorland led a team of scientists to the top of Mt Erebus and created his own earth-moon-earth communications into space.

It is these challenges which have been the drive behind John’s enthusiasm for photography.

John carries a name familiar to Island Bay. His grandfather, also John Shorland, was a Wellington City Councillor and chaired the Island Bay School Committee where his children went to school.

Before passing away, he contributed to building the playground equipment in Island Bay. Today, Shorland Park remains a legacy for Grandfather John and his children, being named after the family.

most recent images are inspired by the 19th century realist, Edward Hopper.

John has found himself working out of his comfort zone to come up with the photographs for the upcoming exhibition, “Hoppertainment” at Island Bay’s Tapu Te Ranga Gallery.

“It’s good to get your work out there and have it shown,” John says.

He has joined four Wellington artists John Fuller, Rahul Gopinathan, Marc Hill and Ian Logan to come up with drawings, paintings, sculptures and photographs inspired by Hopper.

John admires the reflections in windows that Hopper manipulated.

His latest photographs of Wellington’s buildings reflect the different perspectives which replicate Hopper’s ideas.

“Everybody sees an image differently,” John says.

Typically, John takes photographs of New Zealand outdoors, however he began to play around with the exposure levels on his camera when

he photographed buildings.

The last series of John’s photographs featured at the Tapu Te Ranga Gallery in Island Bay as a part of the “Homage to the Masters” exhibition last year.

Over the past 30 years, John has been building relationships on farms and was inspired to photograph woolsheds dating back to the 1850s.

As John begun working on these farms, his drive to photograph farm life in the early hours of the morning led him to become more spontaneous in the photos he took.

John’s love for a challenge drove him to stitch his images together with digital technology without artificial light or flash.

He has since been replicating the legacy his grandfather left him with photographs of history that New Zealand bares today.

John’s latest photographs can be viewed at the Tapu Te Ranga Gallery from February 2.

By Nikki Papatsoumas The Newtown Breastfeeding Support Centre is making a move this year.

They will be moving from their old home at the Trinity Church Hall in Newtown, to the Newtown Cultural and Community Centre.

The group, which celebrated their first birthday last year, was founded by a group of mothers, with the intention of providing a free service for women who are having difficulties with breast feeding.

The clinic provides the service of a lactation consultant who gives specialist advice on breast feeding.

Spokesperson for the centre Liora Noy says there are many reasons why the group has decided to make the move.

“We were hoping we would reach out to even more mums, from more diverse cultural backgrounds.

“We also wanted be part of the vibrancy and rich community that the community centre already has.”

The group meets every Monday morning, and Liora says they are hoping to possibly open on a second morning if they can get more funding, and the community centre can accommodate them.

Liora says the Newtown Community Centre has been very

accommodating, and they are incredibly grateful to the Trinity Church for allowing them to use their hall for a reduced fee over the last 18 months.

“We are so grateful to the church, without them we could not have started.”

The Newtown Breastfeeding Support Group will meet once a week starting from February 10 during the school term from 10am to midday.

Liora asks for mothers to bring a koha donation of a gold coin if possible, to contribute to the cost of hiring the hall.

Spruce Goose: Behind the name Dear Ed, Re Ms Swift’s January 13 letter on the name Spruce Goose, she is seemingly a decade or so younger than I am at 78-and-a-half years, and so doesn’t recall how world-famed it was as the name of Howard Hughes’s flyingboat, made of wood, which took years to build as the biggest aeroplane in the world during the approximate period of 1947-53.

It flew on only one occasion, for a short distance, only about a metre above the sea off the California coast.

It has been in a museum for many years, and can still be seen in (I think) Oakland, near “Frisco”.

Howard Hughes was an extraordinary man who inherited a huge fortune in a toolmaking company; so he was free to live as a worlfamed aviator and movieproducer.

However, he eventually became eccentric and reclusive: to get a sight of him was a rare thing for the media. Despite his being mega-rich, he chose to live in hotels; and in the end, he voluntarily lived there

in a rather unhygienic and squalid state.

Some said he looked like Nebuchadnezzar while mad, with uncut hair and nails like birds’ claws: and Hughes refused to let his hotel bedroom be cleaned.

I guess he was one millionaire with whom people could truthfully say they wouldn’t swap places, so far as his final few decades went; though he’d been very bright and glamorous when he wowed them during the 1930s.

Plans continue for local cycle route and walkway Locals are enthusiastic to see work begin on a cycle and walkway along the Kilbirnie Drainage Reserve.

The proposed cycle and walkway will run from the intersection of Queens Drive and Cockburn Street to Tirangi Road.

Last year the public was informed of plans to remodel the reserve into a cycle and walkway and were invited to share their ideas about how they would like to see the space utilised.

Plans are continuing to tick over, and the Wellington City Council’s 2014-15 Annual Plan proposes that $280,000 be spent on upgrading the area.

This would include landscaping, planting, signage, improved entry points and road crossings.

Eastern Ward Councillor Sarah Free says the proposed cycle and walkway will tidy up and beautify the area while providing over a kilometre of safe off-road

cycling and walking for the community.

“This will be a great facility for cyclists, families, runners, people wanting to walk dogs, or those just wanting to relax in some green space in the middle of this high-density urban area.

“We have tried to think about all users and have even included 24 off-street car parks in the wider section behind the bus barns.”

Ms Free says locals, including representatives from resident’s associations and school principals have been enthusiastic about the initiative.

“We hope this will eventually be part of a larger cycling and walking network in the eastern suburbs and the rest of Wellington.”

The City Council’s 2014-15 draft Annual Plan containing this proposed initiative will be issued for public consultation from February 11 to March 11.

2014 is shaping up to be an absolutely positive year for Wellington, as well as an important historical year.

This year is the 100th anniversary of World War One – a time for us to remember the thousands who sacrificed their lives in “the war to end all wars”. Of course, the war was a terrible tragedy, but also New Zealand’s coming of age.

Wellington will be host to several key events to mark the occasion and to remember the

sacrifice our forebears made to preserve our freedom.

Importantly, the economic outlook for the year is positive, which will provide a strong platform for sharing the benefits through initiatives like the Living Wage.

Wellington City Council has taken a bold step in adopting the $18.40 an hour Living Wage to provide its workers with improved incomes so their families can live in dignity – a matter we should be very proud of.

Locally, it’s important that you have your say on key projects that will transform South Wellington. My priorities are getting your views on the options for connecting Island Bay beach to Shorland Park, working specifically with home owners and tenants who may lose their carparks as a result of the proposed Island Bay to CBD cycleway, and talking to the diverse communities of Newtown to progress a new community and cultural centre.

Lastly, I wish all Wellingtonians a happy and prosperous year and encourage everyone to cherish the freedoms and values our ancestors left for us.

Happy New Year, I hope that you have had a safe and happy holiday. In 2014, I look forward to seeing more jobs created and to seeing concrete progress on greening our economy and cleaning up the local environment, building on the work that your Council has already done. I'm also keen to continue my work with the communities in the Lambton ward on a range of issues.

I would like to see further progress on earthquake strengthening the city's buildings, a stop to the flyover and 2nd Mt Vic tunnel and progress on light rail and more cycle paths, a stronger focus on waste minimisation to reduce the need for the extension of the Southern landfill, improved services for library users, the Living Wage for more Wellingtonians and continued investment in Lambton's villages - Aro Valley, Kelburn and Thorndon. Focusing on kids is also important an indoor play-ground and safer roads is also a priority.

Locally I wish for a busy year for our eastern suburbs businesses and I would encourage everyone to support our local retailers. Prosperous business means jobs for our families.

I encourage people to love Wellington!

Wellingtonians should look for the many great things about the capital and eastern suburbs and not get caught up in the whingeing of negative social commentators.

Some projects in the eastern ward that I am keen to see progress are the second Mt Vic Tunnel, a plan for Miramar Peninsula (Prison, Shelly Bay etc.) and a shower for dogs and surfers in Lyall Bay as a start to remodelling the shabby reserve land there.

I would also like to maintain the city as the liveable capital it is, then invest in projects that don’t burden ratepayers. Councillors, remember we are spending ratepayers’ money. And remember to treat everyone as a nice person, until they prove you wrong.

New face for medical centre

By Nikki Papatsoumas Peninsula Medical Centre has welcomed a new face this New Year.

Matthew Shaw has just completed his second week as part of the team at the Miramar clinic, and has come on board as one of their doctors.

He has replaced Tony Law, who had been a doctor in Miramar for over three decades.

Matthew is originally from England, and moved to New Zealand 10 years ago. He has since been working in medical centres in Lower Hutt.

The father of four says he has an interest in children’s health and minor operations such as “lumps and bumps.”

He says he lives in Wellington and is excited at the opportunity to work closer to home, as well as get

to know the Miramar community.

“I am looking forward to getting to know the community of Miramar, and working with a good practice to deliver quality health care, which I think they do,” he says.

“Just having my own list of patients and the relationship that goes with that will be great.”

It is time for me to take a step back now and pursue other passions and hobbies, though I do this with a heavy heart.

It is imperative that I leave you in good hands, thus I am pleased to announce that I have found a successor to take over your medical care – Dr Matthew Shaw – who brings with him plenty of General Practice experience and more.

It is with mixed feelings that I leave you all, including all of my colleagues at Peninsula. They have been an amazing team to work with over the years and I feel that they are much like extended family to me. So, after nearly four decades of General Practice, I recognize it is indeed time for me to do more family things.

Thank you so much for your support as my patients. I view it as an honour and privilege to have been able to provide your medical care over the years, and as I take leave, I hope you will continue to support our Medical Centre and attend Dr Shaw and my other colleagues at Peninsula.

Toilets in case of emergency

By Joe Diehl Cook Strait News Intern A Wellington man has designed a toilet which can be used in the event of an emergency.

Matt King is the brains behind Emergency Compost Toilets, which will ensure people can still use the bathroom in the event of a natural disaster or civil emergency.

The idea came in order to aid residents left without functioning sewage systems following the Christchurch

Earthquakes.

“I saw a real need for an alternative toilet system that better met the needs of people in an emergency,” Matt says.

The emergency toilets not only help in the event of an earthquake or civil disaster, they also can be used to benefit gardens and the environment.

The toilet has two separate seats and works by separating solid and liquid waste , once separated it can then be used for compost in the garden. The toilets, which are compact and easy to

use, have been designed for indoor use.

Workshops are being run around Wellington to instruct people on how to use the toilets and they include free instructions as well as training and education.

Matt says the workshops have been really popular, especially after the shakes last year.

Feet that have been hidden all winter can have built up layers of dry skin especially around the heels, which can lead to splits that should be treated promptly.

Stories shared for museum exhibition Visitor Services Host Nell Woodward with her favourite story at the Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui exhibition.

By Anneka Paul Whitireia Journalism Student Residents and visitors of Wellington have put pen to paper to share their stories for an exhibition at Wellington’s Museum of City and Sea. The public has been encouraged to write a story based on an event, place, person, change or creativity in Wellington to be displayed on the exhibition’s wall.

Since June last year, the exhibition Te Upoko o te Ika a Maui has been popular among tourists, and students visiting the museum.

The Maori name of the exhibition is of significant meaning to the Wellington region.

Te Ika a Maui is the fish of Maui and is the Maori name of the North Island and te Upoko is the head which covers the regions of Wellington, Hutt

Valley, Porirua, Kapati Coast and Wairarapa.

The Museum’s Deputy Director, Paul Thompson has enjoyed seeing the children’s stories in particular.

“I like it when children draw little pictures, for if they can’t write, this is how they tell a story,” Paul says.

Earlier this month, one young girl, Freya Green told a story about herself.

My Dad is a diplomat and I have lived all around and I have been to lots of schools and I am different and I do not care.

Because I am who I am and no one can change that. I am Freya Green and that was me.

Visitor services host, Nell Woodward says the project has taken off over the school holidays.

“It has been very popular with cruise ships and children.

January is the busiest time,” Nell says.

Her favourite story was spotted on the exhibition wall yesterday.

I’m from Scotland, today me and my boyfriend had a lovers tiff because he is a Grumpaholic, so I came to this museum.

The story isn’t finished yet but I will see when I get back to the hostel.

Nell picked this story because it made her laugh.

“I like to pick ones that tell interesting stories or cool stories that you haven’t heard before,” she says.

New exhibition for The Toast-man

By Nikki Papatsoumas “The Toast-man” aka Maurice Bennett is taking a different direction with his latest exhibition, Hope on Toast.

Bennett is better known for using slices of toast to create large pixelated images of the profiles of famous people.

Hope on Toast is made up of a variety of works, and as well as using pieces of toast preserved in polyurethane for the exhibition, Bennett has also used ink impressions of various slices of toast.

Bennett says the inspiration for the exhibition has come out of being diagnosed with cancer and having to go through chemotherapy.

“The nature of having chemo can be rather depressing, you don’t have much strength, you’re in hospital and very restricted.”

“For most of my life I have considered doing art as an outlet for my creativity. It was an outlet and it was very therapeutic.”

The exhibition will be held at Deluxe café, Bennett says he likes the intimate atmosphere of the space and the fact it is not a traditional gallery environment.

Bennett says he also wanted to express his gratitude to those who stood by him throughout his journey, which he has done with words on toast, for the ‘Care, Love and Hope’ series of work that is shown in the exhibition.

In fact one of the works, ‘Care, Hope and Love’ will be donated to the Cancer Ward at Wellington Hospital at the end of the exhibition.

Hope on Toast will run at Deluxe Café on Kent Terrace from January 19 to February 2.

Burkes speeds races

Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon Training Sessions

Burkes Cycle Speed League is a new Sunday bike race available to all biking abilities.

The event runs every week from 4pm to 6pm at the Hataitai Velodrome until the end of March.

Race entry is $5 per person but spectators are free.

Accumulate points in your bike races to reach the league final or enter the Lanes Sprint Ace competition to compete against fast men and women.

Wellington city pools and recreation centres are offering some fun ‘boot camp’ training for kids participating in the Sanitarium Weet-Bix Kids TRYathlon.

At Keith Spry Pool, a TRI NZaccredited coach will help kids with getting on top of wave starts, pack swimming, transitions (swim to bike), bike skills, run drills and course tactics.

“It is a show of contrast between our works, but there is also a sense of unison,” he says.

Chalmers has used narrative as a painting tool to build a story around static images of people giving importance to the figure as a navigator of time and space.

In contrast, Coleman’s painting process dissolves any narrative that exists in his close-ups.

His highly cropped paintings deprive the viewer of context and distinctive features are altered or removed entirely.

Adding C, D and E is the much awaited exhibition of new paintings by artists Emma Chalmers and Hamish Coleman, now open at the Toi Poneke Gallery.

Together Emma and Hamish have created an exhibition that takes the human form and its changing conditions as its primary subject.

They have spent six months working on the exhibition, which opened last Thursday.

The pair met last March, and after both putting separate proposals forward for funding, it was suggested that they work together.

Coleman says that although they are exhibiting together, both artists work is quite different from one another.

Floorball Championships first time in NZ

By Laura Kavanagh Wellington is gearing up to host the APAC World Floorball Championships, a competition never held in New Zealand before.

From January 29 to February 2, teams from Australia, Singapore, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand will battle it out at the ASB Sports centre.

Developed in 1970 in Scandanavia, Floorball is a sport similar to hockey except the sticks are made of plastic and ball is lighter and full of holes.

Although relatively unknown in New Zealand, the sport is swiftly gaining a strong following supported by the Wellington Floorball Club and Floorball New Zealand.

The Wellington Floorball Club is the biggest club in the country and the Wellington Storm won the New Zealand National Floorball Championships from 2009 - 2011 and in 2013.

Not surprisingly, the New Zealand national team is made up of many Wellington players.

One of the youngest is 16 year old Musa Olatunji from Wellington College.

A keen sportsman, Musa says Floorball is different to other sports.

“I enjoy all the running around…it’s good fun.”

Vice president of Floorball New Zealand Sven-Erik Sundin is keen to introduce more New Zealanders to the sport.

“It is one of those sports that is really simple, but it is hard to become really good.”

To help introduce new players to the sport, the Welling-

ton club hold training sessions for beginners on Tuesdays.

The best three teams in the APAC World Floorball Championships will play in the World Cup Finals in Gothenburg, Sweden in December, 2014.

Island Bay student star of the night

By Anneka Paul Whitireia Journalism Student A young girl from Island Bay had the chance to star in the final Blackcaps versus West Indies cricket match at the Westpac Stadium last week.

Island Bay School student, Mahinaz Rana got to star alongside captains Brendan McCallum and Dwayne Bravo for Wednesday night’s match after winning a coin toss competition run by ANZ. Mahinaz was entered into the competition by her father, Parvez Rana.

He says he entered Mahinaz because she loves cricket, and he wants to encourage his kids to get involved with the sport.

Parvez says Mahinaz and her five year old brother play cricket games together on their PlayStation, and the family like to get together to play cricket outdoors as often as they can.

He says the whole family attended the game to support Mahinaz and watch the Blackcaps in action.

“I was very happy and it was good to see how the professional business works,” Parvez says.

Mahinaz says that although she felt shy, it was good to go out onto the field.

Although Mahinaz was a star on the night, she is yet to tell her friends about it at school.

“They’ll be happy,” she says.

ANZ Head of Sponsorship, Sue McGragor says this is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

“Very few people get the chance to stand beside some of the world’s best cricketers in front of TV cameras and a live crowd for this critical match moment,” she says.

Blackcaps won the game, which was a T20, something Mahinaz says she is very pleased about.
