By Nikki Papatsoumas Year two student at Lyall Bay School Helene Finlayson says she loves getting milk in school because it tastes like butter popcorn.

She is just one of the many students from Lyall Bay School who are now part of Fonterra’s Milk for Schools programme, which began last week.

The programme sees children from year one to six supplied with a 180ml carton of fresh milk every day.

Fonterra piloted the programme in Northland last year, and have since been rolling it out throughout other regions in the country.

As part of the programme Fonterra are supplying participating schools with a serving of milk for every student every day, a Fonterra fridge to chill the milk, free delivery of the milk, a free recycling kit consisting of recycling bins and bags, and collection of used packaging for recycling.

Free milk for school kids

By Nikki Papatsoumas Deputy Principal Clint Chalmers says so far the children really seem to be enjoying the programme.

He says now they look forward to waiting a few weeks to see if the milk is making any difference.

Mr Chalmers says Fonterra have been fantastic in supplying them with everything they need to get the programme off the ground.

“They have been really good, they have supplied everything and it encourages the kids to drink something else other than coca cola or fruit juice.

“If they have the opportunity to drink the milk then why not, it’s not costing them anything and it’s not costing us anything.”

He says parents were consulted when Fonterra initially asked the school if they would like to participate in the programme, and 90 per cent of parents elected for their children to take part.

Two milk ambassadors have been elected in every class, and year five and six pupils are in

charge of delivering the milk to classrooms ready for after lunch every day, as well as storing the milk away.

“The milk has a shelf life of six months, it just needs to be in the fridge for 24 hours to cool it down and it’s much nicer for the kids to drink,” says Mr Chalmers.

Children are also told how to fold up the cartons, which are then recycled in bins supplied

by Fonterra.

Mr Chalmers says they eventually want to make it a student driven programme.

He says after the children have got used to it and are doing it correctly they will get the younger milk ambassadors to help with deliveries.

“Once the kids take ownership then it will just run more smoothly and then the kids can take over.”

Water tanks fly off shelves

By Nikki Papatsoumas Wellingtonians seem to be getting prepared for a natural disaster, with water tanks flying off shelves around the Wellington region.

The tanks have been developed by the Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office.

They are 12 metres high hold 200 litres of rain water which can be stored away and used in the event of an emergency.

Community Resilience Advisor for Wellington Region Emergency Management Office Jason Paul says they recognised not everyone could afford traditional pre-

paredness enablers.

He said they wanted to work with suppliers to ensure what they were offering was not only affordable, but also small enough to fit into most cars.

“We wanted something that was easy enough to install for Joe average.”

He says they have sold over 1,000 tanks in the last three weeks, at city councils around the Wellington Region.

“It’s great. That is 1,000 households that really have a good chunk of water after and emergency event.”

Mr Paul says in a disaster the southern end of Wellington city could potentially be without water for three

months, so it is vital people are prepared.

“The best preparedness that can be done is in the household, the foundation of everything is in the home.

“It is about being there for when these households need it, it stores clean water and they can use it for however best suits them which is great.”

Mr Paul says they do not expect emergency preparedness to take over people lives.

“You just need to think about it once or twice, know your hazards. Take a few moments with your household to prepare for these hazards and then enjoy every day life.”

Recycle your unwanted electronics

By Nikki Papatsoumas Wellingtonians can now recycle most of their electronic waste for free at the Southern Landfill Recycling Plant.

Wellington is the first place in the country that can offer the service, which is able to remain free through a partnership between Wellington City Council and Remarkit.

The project is not funded through rates but instead the sale of recyclable parts of the electronic waste, which means it is free for Wellingtonians and the council.

Tawa based business Remarkit will dismantle the electronics, according to the Ministry for the Environments guidelines for collecting and recycling electronic waste.

Wade Brown says she hopes this will mean less electronic waste will end up in the landfill.

“The price for the recyclable components now covers the cost of provision for these facilities, and I am really delighted that less will be going into the landfill.

“The more resources that can be recovered the less mining and ecological expense in creating the materials for computers in the first place, so it is a sustainable operation both ecologically and financially.”

Ms Wade-Brown was involved in leading eDay as a pilot in 2006, which was a project that allowed people to drop their electronic off at the Stadium once a year.

She says although the idea was popular, one day a year was never enough.

“Now it is free 364 days a year. Being smart about recycling and waste minimization is an essential part of being a smart capital.”

Electrical equipment that can now be recycled includes computers, laptops, printers, phones and fax machines.

Television sets and cathode ray tube computer screens will continue to be $20 to drop off. This is because the screens contain leaded glass that needs to be stripped out and processed overseas.

However as part of the TV Takeback, Wellingtonians will be able to recycle their TVs for just $5 for a limited time.  For more information head to www.wellington. govt.nz

It is also a nickname her dad has always had for her, and Rosie says he has always misspelt it so she decided to go along with his spelling.

Rosie says she would like to continue to work with the locals, and wants to be a base for functions and work with the community.

“I really love being here in Berhampore, the community keeps getting better and better.”

Rosie says she also intends on building relationships with the many community gardens that are popping up around Berhampore.

“I’m trying to be the link between the school and the council nursery and the community orchard.”

“If we can be the meeting place for people to come along to get things going then that would be great.”

“I believe we should be swapping veggies with our neighbours, meeting together to do working bees in each other’s gardens, and if this is the place that helps to make that connection that would be ideal.”

A public meeting will be held next Wednesday to discuss improving cycling around Island Bay and a cycle route to the city. Plunket say the number of calls to their advice line is beginning to slow after a busy week following the potential contamination of infant formula last week. Plunket General Manager of Service Delivery Brenda Hynes says the number has dropped off after peaking last Monday.

“On Monday we had a 400 per cent increase in calls and on Tuesday it had reduced to a 22 per cent increase. The situation seems to be settling a little.”

Museum Art Hotel takes top spots

By Nikki Papatsoumas Museum Art Hotel staff performed well at this year’s Wellington Receptionist of the Year competition, taking out the top two spots.

Mount Cook Local Greer Birkinshaw took first place, and her colleague Marissa Walmsley from Newtown took out second place.

The girls say they feel proud to have come away on top, after impressing a panel of five judges, made up of Wellington hotel representatives.

“We were asked questions and we had to relate it to

work, we had to explain how we would handle situations, and what it would involve,” says Greer.

The competition also saw the girls take part in a role play, allowing judges to see firsthand how they would deal with more difficult customers.

Both the girls agree that most people don’t realise the work that goes into being a receptionist.

“I always get lots of comments about how all we do is push paper, not many people know how much we do so it’s

cool to be able to show them,” says Marissa.

“It is something fun, it’s not just sitting at a desk doing the same thing.

We are always meeting new people.”

Greer says you can never assume what kind of person will next walk through the door.

“We want people to be happy when they walk in the door, and happy when they leave.”

The girls will now go on to compete at the National competition in Christchurch

Biking benefits everyone Dear Ed, Thanks very much for your article about the 21 August public meeting on proposed cycle lanes in Island Bay. Our suburb really needs these lanes to make riding a bike an option. The safety of our current ‘cycle lanes’ speaks for itself: I have never once seen a child riding on them. Island Bay is full of families with young children (including ours) but there’s nowhere for kids to safely and comfortably ride their bikes. They are missing out on a wonderful part of childhood.

Biking benefits everyone, and I encourage all Island Bay residents to support this council initiative. Our suburb is a great place to raise kids, but being able to cycle with them to school, the beach, the library, or the local café will make it even better.

City verse villages?

Dear Ed, Tim Jones, from ‘Save the Basin’ wonders why Auckland is getting a rail funding and Wellington is not? (5 August) Auckland is now seen as being a unified City, Wellington is seen simply as a series of ‘villages’.

Len Brown and Celia Wade-Brown were elected as the Mayors of their respective Cities at the same time.

Mr Brown never gave up on his vision for a rail-loop for Auckland, he was tenacious and dogmatic in his vision.

Ms Wade-Brown appeared

to give up on her vision within days of being elected.

Both visions are expensive, and require long-term commitment. Len Brown, despite all the adversity, has gotten that commitment, and more importantly, the funding.

For the last few years, our political landscape has been dominated by short-term thinking.

Made in New Zealand is an annual Footnote Dance programme which began in 2007 as a way to develop and present New Zealand works by Kiwi choreographers with New Zealand music.

Made in New Zealand 2013 will be the final in the series for Footnote Dance, before they rebrand, and dancer Olivia McGregor says for the first time this year they are putting on a full length work.

“This year’s show is very special because it is the first time we are putting on a full length work. We wanted to go out with a bang and finish with one major show.”

Olivia began dancing when she was four years old, and trained in ballet until she was 16.

“I began to find it very challenging, and realised it wasn’t for me so I switched to contemporary dance.”

She was then selected to take part in the Junior Associate Programme at the New Zealand School of Dance, where she then went on to train full time.

“It got me really inspired and from there I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to audition for the New Zealand School of Dance.”

Olivia joined footnote in 2011, and has since had the opportunity to work with a variety of renowned choreographers.

The theme of this year’s program me is COLT, through which guest director will explore what it means to be part of something big or something small.

Road works along Bay Road were scheduled to be completed on August 9, leaving some people confused as to why there were still contractors working on the road last week.

A council representative says this is 'remedial work' and they are now fixing up work that was done before but wasn't completed to an acceptable standard.

Contractors are getting through this work quickly and should be finished sometime this week.

The council’s Parks and Gardens team are starting planting this week, however this shouldn't cause any disruption and should be finished within a few days.”

A broken heart can heal, but a damaged/ diseased heart may not.

One organ we really can not do without is our heart, so it’s imperative that we look after it.

There is plenty of advice available on what makes for a healthy heart, but there are some very important factors that are proven to help to keep the heart healthy.

Many of these are not only health related, but lifestyle related too.

Think of it as a lifestyle change rather than dieting because by living and eating in a healthier way you will feel better, more energised, more confident and happier.

Reduce fat: A certain amount of fat is good for a well balanced diet but reduce the amount of fat and the type of fat you eat.

Saturated fat affects blood cholesterol levels, so try to eat less full-fat dairy products, cakes, cookies, pastries and burgers and replace with monosaturated fats such as olive oil, nuts and avocado.

Polyunsaturated fats in small amount helps reduce cholesterol so oily fish (salmon, sardines) and oils like sunflower, corn and soya oil are good.

Eat less salt: Eating too much salt has been linked to high blood pressure.

A recommended level is 6g a day. Put less in cooking and try not to add any salt at the table.

Exercise: Regular exercise improves heart function and lowers your blood pressure and blood cholesterol.

Thirty minutes of moderate exercise

every day is recommended.

Keep weight down: Too many calories, fatty foods and being overweight is really bad for you.

It puts extra stresses and strain on your heart, makes you feel lethargic and deenergised.

Try eating more fruit and vegetables, less sugary foods, eat more unrefined carbohydrates such as seed breads, wholegrain cereals and pasta.

So-called soluble fiber may also help reduce cholesterol so eat oats, beans and pulses such as kidney beans, peas and baked beans.

Stop smoking: Although it’s down as step five, quitting smoking is one of the most important things you can do.

It dramatically cuts your chances of getting heart and respiratory diseases, cancer and emphysema.

If you have already had a heart attack quitting will reduce the risk of a second one.

The colour of a humans skin is determined by the level of pigment melanin that the body produces. Those with small amounts of melanin have light skin while those with large amounts have dark skin.

Each side of the brain interacts largely with just one half of the body, but for reasons that are not yet fully understood, the interaction is with opposite sides, the right side of the brain interacts with the left side of the body, and vice versa.

Human eyes contain a small blind spot where the optic nerve passes through the

retina. Our brains use information from the other eye to fill in the vision gap so it is rarely, if ever, noticed.

As well as having unique fingerprints, humans also have unique tongue prints.

The floor of the nasal cavity is also the roof of the mouth.

While your ears pick up the sound, it is your brain that does the hard work of making sense of it all.

As well as delivering important substances to our cells, blood also helps take away unwanted waste products.

Brooklyn on the way to quake compliance

By Anneka Paul Whitireia Journalism Student Brooklyn’s commercial building owners are at different stages in the government’s quest for compliance.

Last week, the 20 year deadline for earthquake prone buildings to meet a 34 per cent minimum standard of the building code was introduced.

Simon Skinner and Sue Gifford of Todman Partnership own the 1900s building which houses the Cornerstore bar on Todman Street.

Todman Partnership began strengthening the heritage listed building with concrete and steel columns 25 years ago, to reach a safety standard above 70 per cent.

Today, the pair are working with engineers to raise the safety standard even higher in their

heritage listed building.

“We’re doing a little extra to bring it up, not far off 100 per cent,” Mr Skinner says.

He says there should be some sort of compromise between engineers and building owners.

“They’re making profit and they do have to be aware of the fact that through making money, people’s lives are at risk.

“Whether the government are involved in that or tax payer’s money is involved in that.”

Other building such as the Penthouse Cinema on Ohiro Road has a safety standard of 33 per cent from an assessment that was made in September last year.

Owner Sandra Kisby and her partner Iain Mcleod say they are working with engineers and architects to improve the buildings safety.

Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal Countdown is again supporting Wellington Children’s Hospital this year, with the launch of its annual Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal running from August 5 to October 27.

Now in its seventh year, the Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal has raised more than $5.7 million nationwide through locally-led activities.

Funds raised from the appeal go towards much needed hospital equipment for 10 children’s wards throughout New Zealand that may not otherwise have been purchased.

Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal Chairperson, Ruth Krippner, says you do not have to be a doctor to make a difference to the lives of children who are unwell by simply showing support through this year’s appeal.

“Countdown Kids Hospital Appeal is all about getting together as a community and doing what we can to support children who need us.

“At times we can feel a bit helpless because we can’t help in the same way doctors can, so it’s great that the appeal helps to fundraise for much-needed equipment for kids.”

Mr Mcleod says engineers found no issues in The Penthouse after the last quake in Wellington but the safety of buildings today is similar to what it was 80 years ago.

“The ground in Brooklyn is rotten rock and isn’t very solid. The Penthouse was built in 1938, just after the Napier earthquakes so there was a similar awareness in those dates.

Brooklyn Galleria owner, Alida Miculetich says engineers inspected the Todman Street address three months ago and said the building was earthquake prone.

The inspection found that the building was okay except for the windows around the building.

“The building is 75 per cent brand new, 10 years old, built 10 years ago. I have shelves against the windows,”

Brooklyn Galleria owner, Alida Miculetich “Why should I spend money to get an engineer’s report to give to the council, when they had the report done by their engineers, I was not advised, I was not told,” she says.

The 6.5 earthquake as well as the storm earlier this year are proofs that her shelving is solid Ms Miculetich says.

She is still communicating with the Wellington City Council to discuss future strengthening of her building.

I dive several times a week but I’m not a good freestyle swimmer.

Making the digital switch Freeview are urging Wellingtonians to make sure they are ready for the digital switch over, which is set to take place on September 29.

It is estimated that over 7,700 local households have yet to make the move to digital TV. From this date in September,

these households will no longer be able to pick up an analogue signal.

Freeview’s general manager Sam Irvine says because of Wellington’s hilly terrain, locals are more likely than people in other regions to need a Freeview satellite to keep watching free TV.

He says most homes in Wellington will already have the equipment necessary to make the switch, however for those who don’t they should start planning earlier as the cost may be higher.

Most recent televisions have a Freeview decoder built into them and to pick up a signal they will

need to have access to a UHF aerial or satellite dish.

Mr Irvine says he expects the transition to digital television to run smoothly.

“It went very well in the south island and we are expecting things to be not much different here.”

Lynn of Tawa to stand in Southern Ward

By Dave Crampton Lynn of Tawa is standing for the Wellington City Council – but not in the Northern Ward, encompassing Tawa, the area made famous by her altar ego.

Ginette McDonald has gone south, and will contest the Southern Ward as an independent against Bryan Pepperell, a councillor for the past 17 years.

She said she hadn’t even considered

standing for the Tawa Community Board.

“Why should I? I`m not a Tawa resident, never have been,” she says. “I`ve got my hands full with the Southern Ward, which has different issues to Tawa.”

Ms McDonald, who lives in Owhiro Bay, says she has no affinity with Tawa at all.

“When I invented Lyn of Tawa I hadn’t even set foot in the place.”

Junior Football Club scoop another award

By Dave Crampton The North Wellington Junior Football Club has its third award in a year, after coming runner up in the sport and leisure category at the 10th Wellington Airport Community Awards on August 6.

The club beat bigger clubs such as Netball Wellington, Wellington Golf- as well as Island Bay United Amateur Football Club, with Adventure Wellington taking out the category.

Club President Helen Mallon and coaching director Gavin Underhill were on hand to receive a large framed certificate and a cheque for the club for $250.00 at a ceremony hosted by Mayor Celia Wade-Brown in the Council Chamber.

They did not expect to hear the club’s name called out.

“We were both actually quite shocked,” Mrs Mallon said. “It was a special moment – quite humbling actually. Some of the other clubs have done some great stuff.”

Ms Wade-Brown said the event celebrates Wellington's vibrant community and volunteer sector.

“The awards recognise the great work of our people who make a difference in the lives of fellow Wellingtonians”.

Hundreds of fish for Capital Trout Centre More than 1,000 rainbow trout were released last Thursday into the pond at the Capital Trout Centre at Happy Valley in Wellington.

The fish were released in preparation for the next kid’s ‘fish out’ day.

Each year hundreds of young anglers get a chance to catch their first fish at the open days.

Expert anglers from the Wellington Flyfishers Club turn out to help the youngsters get started, with the next open day set for Sunday September 1.

Fish & Game NZ Wellington Regional Manager Phil Teal said

that all the fish are of “catchable size” but a few larger ones are put in spice things up, providing some kids an even bigger thrill.

Mr Teal says it’s a great community facility and worthwhile event.

“It’s a great opportunity for young children to hook their first fish and maybe get hooked on a fun sport.”

“The children have a lot of fun at the fish out days and gain new skills, learn some patience, and connect with the outdoors.”
