The hall, which was closed in December, is still out of use and will be for a while until the best solution is decided on by the Presbyterian/Methodist National Church and the congregation.

Groups that used the hall for recreational use are now using the main sanctuary of the church.

Ms Redman says members of the church worked hard to have the main

area complete over the school holidays, which included removing the back pews and refinishing the floors.

The chapel has also opened up to provide more space to groups like the church’s playgroup who utilize half of the sanctuary.

“It just comes back to looking like a church on Sundays.

“It’s opened up a whole lot of things from our view,” Ms Redman says.

sic loud without upsetting neighbours, and the local community choir uses the church, Ms Redman says.

“The acoustics are perfect for them,” she says.

The violinists tutor students in the meeting room, and the Karori Historical Society use the sanctuary room.

“It just meant that all the other groups can meet without interruption,” Ms Redman says.

Dunne staying on in Ohariu

leased a statement saying although he did not leak the report, he acknowleged he had not lived up to the high standards he had always set himself as a minister.

“The honourable course for me to follow now is to offer my resignation as a minister.

“My focus now will be on representing my Ohariu constituents and rebuilding my party, UnitedFuture.”

Mr Dunne did not answer the Independent Herald's questions regarding his future in Ohariu, where he has been serving as an MP since 1984.

Chairman of the Johnsonville Community Centre Eric Batten has worked with Mr Dunne on several community projects over the years.

He says although he does not know enough about the recent events to make a judgement

on Mr Dunne's actions, he was supportive of his role in the community.

“From that point of view it would be a disaster if he were to go.

“He's a terrific person for the community.”

Mr Batten said Mr Dunne's dealings with the community over the years had been “excellent” and he was always available when needed.

“He's a terrific electorate MP.” National list MP Katrina Shanks, based in Ohariu, says Mr Dunne has made a significant contribution as a minister over many years.

“He has resigned his position as a Minister of the Crown and has paid a heavy price in recent days for his actions and his future is for him to decide.”

Accessway causes concern for locals

Five years ago landowners of 19a Raumati Terrace, Martin and Linaire Hemi applied for a nine unit multi-unit development with associated earthworks and site access which was approved.

Because the applicants have not met minimal work required within those five years, the permit is on a suspension – meaning the applicants must provide more information.

The man had been watching the rugby with friends in a hut about 40 metres from the edge of the cliff.

A helicopter attempted to search for him around 1am, but bad weather forced it to turn back.

Rescue teams winched the man up the cliff with abseiling equipment, after weather had forced a helicopter search to return at 1am.

The man was treated at the scene, while the Westpac Rescue helicopter flew in from Wellington.

According to reports the man is in “moderate to serious condition” and is being treated at Wellington Hospital.

By Lydia Anderson Embattled UnitedFuture leader and Ohariu electorate MP Peter Dunne is taking a week off politics to spend time with his family, after his resignation as a government minister last week.

Although Mr Dunne has confirmed he is staying on as Ohariu MP, his political career has taken a serious dive following revelations he considered leaking a highly sensitive report to Fairfax Wellington journalist Andrea Vance.

Mr Dunne was initially accused by NZ First leader Winston Peters of leaking a report into the Government Communications Security Bureau, which revealed more than 80 New Zealand citizens may have been illegally spied on by the bureau.

Churton Park bus route not ideal Churton Park Community Association is continuing to take issue with the proposed changes to the local No 54 bus route as advocated by the Greater Wellington Regional Council.

In 2009 GWRC began a comprehensive review of Wellington City bus services.

After four years of public consultations, GWRC says their feedback for Churton Park’s number 54 bus service has indicated that looping around Churton Park makes the bus trip very long as every passenger has to make a complete circuit of Churton Park either on their inbound or outbound journey.

However Churton Park Community Association chairman Richard Taylor says

the change to a "there and back" route as opposed to the present loop routing is a retrograde step.

“While the present route is not ideal, it is at least a workable compromise. Now those in the lower Halswater Drive/Burbank Crescent area suffer a long journey into Wellington but this is somewhat offset by a shorter trip home via Middleton Road,” Mr Taylor says.

The proposal would mean those at the turn-around end of the route (eastern Westchester Drive) would have the trip both ways while those in the Halswater/ Burbank area will need to swap at the Johnsonville hub to a Porirua 210 / 211 route bus.

The committee says that one affected resident has calculated the additional travelling time for the "there and back" suggestion could be up to 25 minutes each way - four hours extra every working week".

However, GWRC’s service design team leader Matthew Lear says the proposed bus route will provide access to the Churton Park Village and new medical centre.

“The current one way bus loop has the disadvantage of not providing access to and from local shops and facilities such as the new medical centre at Churton Park Village.

Depending where you travel from the bus will either get you to Churton Park

Village but not back home again, or will take you home from but not to the Village,” Mr Lear says.

The Association is ensuring the residents in the affected area are made aware of this impact on their travel times and is asking them to make submissions to GWRC to ensure their views are heard.

Residents are encouraged to supply the Association with their views as a further submission has to be made in the next two weeks.

The GWRC are at the stage of developing timetables for all routes and are hoping to finalise the changes by the end of the year and begin implementing them progressively from next year.

By Lydia Anderson Victoria University students have joined the latest nationwide university craze of posting fellow students’ pictures on Facebook for praise or criticism.

Interest in two Facebook pages VUW Babe of the Day and VUW Minga of the Day has escalated quickly since the pages launched last week.

The ‘babe’ page, which has almost 3500 likes, encourages people to send information about attractive male and female university students.

The students’ pictures are then featured on the page, along with a link to their personal Facebook page so users may follow them online.

The contrasting ‘minga’ page also features names and photos of students, caught in drunk or unguarded poses, and captions the photos with unflattering descriptions of their personalities and sexual behaviour.

Reactions from featured students are varied.

Former student Matt Burton, who features on the ‘minga’ page says he finds it funny.

“I think it should be deleted.”

She says she finds it “creepy” that users are told to follow her personal page.

The page is just one of a few similar pages from Auckland, Dunedin, Lincoln and Canterbury universities, which all started recently.

Council standing firm on shortened library hours

By Dani McDonald A new coalition has been formed to campaign against library cuts across the Wellington region.

While the Khandallah Library was recommended by Wellington City Council officers to keep its morning hours this week, the council has now proposed to close community libraries at 5pm, from 5:30pm, or 6pm for libraries in the southern suburbs.

The Wellington Library Coalition brings together the Owners of Wellington Libraries (OWL), Save Khandallah Library, supporters of the Brooklyn Library, along with library campaigners from the Hutt, Wadestown and other areas who share concerns about cuts to library hours, services and jobs. The Public Service Association, which represents most public library staff across the region, is also part of the Coalition.

Almost two million dollars will have been taken out of Wellington City Council’s libraries budget over the past three years if another round of cuts goes ahead as part of

this year’s annual plan proposals.

Marie Russell from OWL says already Wellington has seen cuts to holiday programmes for children, weekly pre-school story times, and children’s book clubs in a number of suburban libraries, the loss of professional and frontline library staff.

“Current proposals to reduce library hours in Cummings Park Ngaio, Wadestown, Khandallah, Island Bay and Brooklyn libraries are unfair and will have a negative impact on services and on older people, parents, children, unemployed people and people with disabilities in our communities.

“Libraries are the heart and soul of communities,” Ms Russell says.

Save Khandallah Library campaigner Jenny Brown says the coalition is to enable Wellington communities to come together to support libraries.

“They [the communities] feel the council is still going ahead with these cuts,” Ms Brown says.

She says WCC doesn’t appear to understand that people care about

their libraries.

“Libraries seem to be quite endangered under this council.

“We just feel that Wellingtonians are passionate about libraries and whatever political view, libraries have always been a community hub.”

The Coalition plans to question the Council’s mandate for the cuts.

“We know that many of the current Councillors stood on a platform three years ago of supporting libraries.

We’re asking them to stand by that commitment in the current annual plan and in the forthcoming local elections,” Ms Russell says.

The Coalition will be seeking to raise its concerns and speak to the Council’s Annual Plan meetings this month.

By Lydia Anderson Discussions about forming a Karori residents’ association are set to get underway in the next month.

Wellington City councillor Andy Foster says although Karori has “gotten by ok” without an association for 15 years, sometimes having one can prove useful.

He says when council recently consulted residents’ associations throughout Wellington on bus services, Karori presented a stumbling View our papers

The proposed council, made up of a mayor and 29 councillors elected from 29 single member local wards will be presented for Wellingtonians to decide on in a binding poll.

Mayor Celia Wade-Brown says under the council’s proposal the Wellington region will be presented with a clear choice between a single-tier option for change, or the status quo.

Sirocco the kakapo coming to Zealandia

By John Galloway, Zealandia volunteer Zealandia will soon again be host to New Zealand's best-known bird.

He's large, green, nocturnal and flightless; and, although he's actually a parrot, he believes that he's human, preferring the company of people to that of others of his own kind. Yes, Sirocco the kakapo is back at Zealandia for six weeks from the 22nd of July.

Kakapo belong to an ancient New Zealand lineage of parrots, which also includes the kea and kaka. They are the heaviest and only flightless parrot in the world.

Kakapo were once common in New Zealand - then people arrived. They were no match for the stoats, cats, rats and dogs we brought with us. Only 124 kakapo survive today.

Being long-lived birds, kakapo only breed every 2-4 years, whenever the irregular mass fruiting of podocarp trees such as rimu occurs. They are also the only flightless bird to use a lek breeding system, whereby the male plays no part in incubation, feeding nesting females or chick rearing.

So why does Sirocco think he's a person?

He became imprinted on people after he caught a respiratory infection when he was

only three weeks old, and had to be handreared for several months, mostly on his own. He now shows little interest in other kakapo and these days lives alone on Maud Island when he's not on tour.

Officially recognised as a conservation ambassador in 2010, by Prime Minister John Key, Sirocco has his own Facebook page, Twitter feed and just loves to be the centre of attention. So why not indulge him by paying him a visit - by appointment only, of course - while he's here?

Capturing the essence

By Dani McDonald Khandallah resident Rachel Binning says capturing the essence of a person is what drives her in her business.

The owner of Bella Photography has photographed since she was 18, having travelled the world over, as well as working in various industries.

Her photography career began with an instamatic camera, before buying a Nikon.

Rachel began her working career as a nurse, and then embarked on an overseas adventure where she snapped “hundreds and hundreds” of photos.

After her travels, she completed a degree in social and public policy and began working as an investigator of the Health and Disability Commission.

She used to own her own wedding photography business called T’is Photography.

In 2011, after her twin sons were born, Rachel had them photographed with former

Rachel volunteers a lot of her time, contributing to Plunket (Onslow and Island Bay), supporting and taking photographs for Mothers Network events, taking weekly photographs for the disestablished Porirua News, Cook Strait News, Independent Herald, and Kapi Mana News, and lately the Clown Doctors New Zealand.

She firmly believes in contributing to and supporting her community.

Heads up for kids The Lion Clubs’ project Heads Up for Kids has raised around $50,000 support young New Zealanders.

Heads up for Kids supports young New Zealanders to attend programmes that help them to build confidence and develop new skills.

Recently, the Johnsonville Lions awarded St Brigid’s School $400 worth of Resene Paint vouchers.

In the past month, communities across the country have cleared out drawers and searched their sofas to collectively donate more than 2 tonnes of obsolete cash.

The two tonnes of cash, made up of old New Zealand and foreign currency, was dug out and donated following the project’s National Awareness Week in April.

Heads Up for Kids currency processor Roy Peterson says the Lions groups are delighted with the results.

“It goes to show that every little bit can make a big difference.

“We are currently processing the coins and banknotes, and estimate the value to be close to $50,000 in legal tender,” Mr Peterson says.

Old and foreign currency has been donated from Northland to as far south as Invercargill.

Some of the coins collected date back to the 1700’s, and collectors have also received old 10 shilling notes.

“It’s amazing what people have stashed away,” Mr Peterson says.

The Reserve Bank of New Zealand estimates that there is over $100 million in old New Zealand currency

unaccounted for.

Mr Peterson says it is important that young people are recognised and give opportunities that boost their confidence “That’s one of the great things about Heads Up for Kids, it turns something people don’t use into memorable and life changing experiences for young people, “ he says.

By Dani McDonald Thirty-six hopefuls wait to become the winner of Johnsonville’s Got Talent, taking place this Saturday.

Organised by the Johnsonville Community Centre and The Rock Church, Johnsonville’s Got Talent is looking for any one, at any age, who has any form of talent.

The Rock Church’s Kirk Beyer says people with all sorts of talent have entered.

“We have lots of singing and dancing, a self defence display – it’s a PG level of violence and some acoustics.”

He says a group has entered a local homemade film. If they get into the semifinals, they will show part two of the film.

First, second and third places in the open and under 18 divisions will walk away with $300, $150 and $50 respectively. The under 18s are sponsored by BurgerFuel and under 12s sponsored by Shoe Connection, who will provide shoe vouchers.

Spot prizes will also be available on the day from Civic Video, Jets Gym, Ballentynes, Mountain Dew and ZM.

There will be 50 local acts performing throughout the day, and then the top three from each division and the three judges performing at the finals 7pm.

Face painting, a coffee cart, a sausage sizzle, a bouncy castle, and Burger Fuel show cars will also keep the guests well entertained.

RSA gala has outstanding turn out

By Dani McDonald The Johnsonville and Districts Returned Service Association had an “overwhelming” response at its gala held on Saturday.

The gala was held at the RSA clubrooms on Johnsonville Rd from 10am to 4pm selling items donated by local families and members.

While the committee wouldn’t confirm how much was raised, they did say it “exceeded expectations”.

People raved about the hot food on offer, including the sausage sizzle.

Local boy Lachlan McGrail turned the wheel for the raffle, which was well appreciated by the locals.

“It was well worth doing it,” committee member Tony Carter says.

The gala was held as a fundraiser to

combat a mounted debt that forced the RSA to stop trading in March. In April the previous committee was overridden, and the new committee has since been battling debt to open its doors.

As a result of such a successful gala, organisers are now planning to hold a second gala day on June 22, from 10am to 2pm.

“There’s still a lot of quality stuff left,” Mr Carter says.

The next fundraising event will be called a ‘garage sale’, and will be a ‘everythingmust-go’ themed day.

In the last hour of the day, from 1pm to 2pm, there will be a super special going.

“Everything must go.”

“And we’ll be meeting people’s price expectations to do that,” Mr Carter says.

Other groups in the running are Churton Park Kindergarten, who wish to put up a cargo net for the children’ playground; Amesbury School who are undergoing an upgrade for the school garden and landscape; Johnsonville Plunket who support groups, family centres and parent education services; Churton Park school who are undergoing their playground landscaping.

St Brigid’s School friends and family fundraising member Carol Winter says

the school hopes to raise funds to purchase paint for the outside gaming area, such as hopscotch and four square.

“We have had some painting in the past, but really it needs repainting because they’ve faded quite a bit,” Ms Winter says.

She says while that is the initial focus, they also hope to get some seats under the trees as the senior playground area lacks any shade.

The competiton is running for another three months at Churton Park New World.

“They’ve been very, very good to us,” Ms Winter says of New World.

So many cute things to buy.

Mostly babies only need the basics, so a staple supply of singlets, all-in-one suits, socks and a warm jacket and beanie and some back up changes for ‘accidents’ are all you really need.

- Nutrition: The World Health Organisation recommends that babies are breast fed exclusively for the first six months of their lives.

While the choice to breastfeed is a personal one, and is not easy for all mothers, on a purely budget-friendly basis breast is also best.

Newborn babies feed approximately every three or four hours. That’s six or seven feeds a day. With formula costing between $20 -

40 per tin, and each tin anecdotally lasting around a week, you could be spending around $100 a month.

Of course, that doesn’t take into consideration the upfront cost of bottles, teats, and sterilisers.

The best tip for having a baby on a budget is to do your research. Put some time into finding out what you really need – and what you don’t – and you’ll find your dollar stretches much further.

Waterside Karori season on track

By Charlene McKay Waterside Karori’s first mens football team are so far ticking all the boxes this season.

They are sitting second on the table for Capital Premier, behind only on goal difference, and are still in the mix for the Chatham Cup having survived the first two rounds.

Coach Ian Porteous says he is very happy with how things are going, especially given the amount of pressure they have been feeling over the last few weeks.

“We have a couple of experienced players out with injuries, but the team has stepped up to the mark. There is a really good atmosphere around.”

In last week’s Chatham Cup round they knocked out the Hutt Valley’s

Stop Out, who are currently sitting top of Capital Premier.

Having lost 4-2 in their first meeting with Stop Out the team felt they had a point to prove.

They did this by winning 6-nil and showed they are strong contenders for Central League promotion.

Porteous says being promoted to Central League is the goal for this season.

“Waterside Karori is a big club and we have the facilities to support a team at Central League level.”

“We want to be in there.”

Porteous acknowledges that they still have a long road ahead of them.

To make Central League the team will need to finish top of Capital Premier and then beat the top contender

from Central Zone in a 2-legged series.

Porteous is unsure about who they might meet from Central Zone in a promotion playoff, but is confident about how they would go, should they qualify.

This week they have a break from the Capital Premier season and will instead play their third Chatham Cup match against Lower Hutt on Sunday.

While they will be playing to win, Porteous says the pressure is off for this game.

“We will be looking to just enjoy it and have a really good day out.”

Regional Super League Round 1 results

By Charlene McKay Netball’s Regional Super League kicked off last Thursday night.

PIC 1, who were unbeaten in Netball Wellington Centre’s qualifying round, took no prisoners in their first game of the league.

With Pulse player Daya Wiffen released to play given it was the Pulse’s bye week, the team thumped Wellington East College 84 – 24.

Wellington East 1 also had a Pulse

player in their ranks in Claire Kirsten.

They beat Upper Hutt Maidstone United 64 – 29.

The other division one game was much tighter, between top Hutt Valley Team Naenae White and Wellington’s SMOG 1.

Naenae White were the team to edge ahead winning 41 – 39.

In division 2, Kapi Mana and Naenae Blue were the teams to win by big margins.

Kapi Mana beat Ulalei 61 – 42 and Naenae Blue beat Wairarapa 73 – 27.

Another tight game was had between St Mary’s College and PIC 2, with St Mary’s College outplaying PIC 2 to win 65 -62.

This week’s games will again be played at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie tomorrow.
