School recycling chance Kate Bleasdale

Schools may yet receive recycling support from Wellington City Council, with a trial announced recently by the mayor.

Wellington mayor Celia Wade-Brown says she wants to build on the enthusiasm for schools joining the Enviroschools programme and wants to see how council can work with the schools on recycling and waste reduction.

A trial will be held this term at 15 schools and early childhood education centres around the city to determine how much is recycled weekly.

The findings will be shared

with participating schools.

Recycling will be collected from the schools in bags.

This trial is a reaction to a number of schools around Wellington finding themselves without a recycling service when the council changed its collection tactics last month.

Schools from around the city contacted the Cook Strait News and sister paper the Independent Herald to say their recycling had stopped and they had to look for independent contractors to take their paper, plastics and glass.

Churches and some community centres were also left out of the new recycling col-

lection programme.

The children of Strathmore School had sent letters to Ms Wade-Brown to express their concerns.

Eseta Valu, for example, wrote: ‘‘You are a greenie, aren’t you? I thought you were supposed to keep our environment healthy and clean.’’

Principal Pele Tui said at the time that the school didn’t want to pay an extra cost and would consider other options.

Following the trial’s completion, Ms Wade-Brown says she hopes other schools will be included in the recycling collection, ‘‘if they have a commitment to waste reduction’’.

Sales company under fire A controversial door-to-door sales company has surfaced in the Wellington region.

David Lord, 29, owner of Living Longer NZ Ltd and Clean Air Systems Ltd, has been the subject of numerous complaints over several years for high-pressure door-to-door selling of Envirotect vacuum cleaners by his representatives.

Last week Living Longer sales representative Peniamina Faletolu spent more than three hours at the home of 72-year-old Porirua woman Shirley Najbert, pitching the sale of a vacuum cleaner at a price of over $4000.

Despite telling him she could not afford the money, he convinced her to drive him to her bank and withdraw $3030 in cash, which she gave to him.

He had secured an appointment at her home by telling her she had won a free gift, which turned out to be two plastic bowls.

Because she paid in cash, the seven days ‘cooling off’ period in the Door to Door Sales Act does not apply.

After she called Lord to ask for her money back, he subsequently reimbursed her $550 but refused

to return the full amount.

She says she feels ‘‘humiliated and stupid’’. ‘‘Now when I look back, I look like an idiot. They really suck you in. If I had been thinking straight...I should have known.’’

Lord, who currently lives in Arakura, Wainuiomata, has an

office in Lower Hutt, and is opening a branch in Porirua.

He would not explain to Cook Strait News why he gave back $550, saying ‘‘we made an arrangement and I have honoured that arrangement.’’

He said he did not condone pressurising clients.

In March Lord was warned by the Commerce Commission for his telemarketers’ and salespeoples’ alleged tactics, which included telling customers they were breathing toxins in their homes and were more likely to get cancer if they stayed at home all day. Last year Lord came to Wellington for ‘‘personal reasons’’, following controversy over his company’s high pressure sales techniques in Napier, reported The Hawkes Bay Today.

In that same year a 71-year-old Lower Hutt woman bought a vacuum cleaner from Living Longer for over $3000 after a salesperson spent hours in her home.

But some have hit back; in 2008 a Napier widow successfully retrieved $3350 from Lord after taking him to the Disputes Tribunal.

Last year, Consumers Institute’s Sue Chetwin told TVNZ Lord was no stranger to her organisation. ‘‘[Lord] operates for a little while until he gets caught and then moves on somewhere else," she said.

Trading an hour of driving for an hour of stitching will soon be possible in the southern suburbs, where a time bank is being set up.

It will allow locals in Newtown, Island Bay and Berhampore to exchange all types of skills and services without money being involved.

Supported by the Newtown Community Centre, it is expected to be operational in spring this year.

A steering group was formed after a workshop about time banking held a few weeks ago generated interest among some community members. ‘‘As the community centre, we don’t want to try and force something in the community. It needed to be something that the community members were interested in and wanted to see happen,’’ says Newtown Community Centre co-ordinator Anna Porter.

The centre is funding the initial set-up, and the steering group will be working on a grant application with Wellington City Council. ‘‘We want to have a coordinator and would like him or her to be paid for the work,’’ says Anna.

Finding funding for time banking is difficult because of its nature: it is not going to be financially sustainable because it doesn’t generate money. ‘‘But it creates sustainable, resilient, strong communities.’’

Anneleise Hall, who was part of the steering group that started a time bank in Lyttleton, is currently helping out by promoting the concept of time banking to community groups and businesses, and starting the database.

She describes time banking as a way of trading skills in a community without using New Zealand dollars. ‘‘People can offer any service.

The more interesting the better.

In a way, it’s an opportunity for people to think outside the square and maybe do things that they don’t get a chance to do.’’

For example, it’s a way to rejuvenate activities such as crochet, with elderly people sharing their skills and knowledge with younger ones.

With time banking, the elderly can stay in their home when they need something done.

‘‘Time banking also builds relationships. It bridges all ages, cultures, socio-economic status, genders. In a way, it’s a step up in volunteering. It’s a huge justice equaliser.’’

One of the reasons why time banking exists is because the state’s health system, education system, and mental health services are struggling to meet the needs of the people they’re trying to help, says Anneleise.

Time banking also breaks barriers. ‘‘Often in our society, people who feel they need help are perceived as weak or vulnerable, so people are often scared to ask for help,’’ she says.

such as the UK. There are currently two other time banks in the Wellington region, in Otaki and Taita.

Newtown solo mum Naomi Afoa says she joined the southern suburbs steering group because everything broke down in her house last year and she had the pressure of financial limitation. ‘‘I was one of these women who was too embarassed to ask for help. I wasn’t connected to the community, or even didn’t ask my family for help.’’

She says she met people whose skills were not used when working at the drop-in centre at the City Mission, and thought how these skills could be used.

Agnes Ginestet

A local gelato maker has scooped a gold award at the 2011 New Zealand Ice Cream Awards ceremony in Queenstown with his special mango sorbet.

Nathan Meyer, who had entered the competition for the first time this year, only started selling gelato and sorbet to supermarkets and other retail outlets last year from his small Newtown factory.

He says the mango sorbet is the result of ‘‘lots of trial and error’’. ‘‘And just trying to create the best [gelato] possible that we can, with as many natural ingredients as we can.’’

With a background in the restaurant industry, he made the decision to get into the gelato business while travelling in Italy in 2003. ‘‘It was just seeing it over there and investigating while I was away and I decided to do it when I came back.’’

He created Carrello del Gelato in 2004, selling gelato from his red-and-white cart at local events and fairs. ‘‘Then we started doing the retail packs of gelato at the end of

The company also supplies restaurants and developed a range of about 50 different

flavours of gelato and sorbets.

The one-litre packs and single-serve range are available in shops and feature lemon, mango, wildberry, vanilla and chocolate flavours.

Mr Meyer is looking at introducing some more specialty flavours to the market.

He says he tries to use as many local ingredients as possible, and imports some of the base ingredients from Italy.

The Ice Cream gold award made some of his existing clients order more of the mango sorbet. ‘‘It gives us confidence we are making a quality product and hopefully it will open new doors with some other stores.’’

For those who wonder what the difference between ice cream and gelato is, Mr Meyer says ice cream has to have a certain fat content to be called ice cream. ‘‘Gelato is a lot lower in fat, and the sorbets are 99 per cent fat free so it is healthier than ice cream.’’

Don’t get into debt In my last column I talked about what it means when someone discounts your ‘‘no’’; ‘‘No’’ is a word that must never be negotiated, because the person who chooses not to hear it is trying to control you.

In this column, we discuss ‘‘loan sharking’’. Loan sharking occurs when a predator ensures that they help you only because that would place you in their debt. They prey on your sense of obligation to repay something that has been done for you. ‘‘The least that you can do is inviting me in for a coffee since I dropped you home.’’

The more traditional loan shark gladly lends one amount by cruelly collects much more. Likewise, the predatory criminal generously offers assistance but is always calculating the debt. The defence is to bring two rarely remembered facts into consciousness: He approached me, and I didn’t ask for any help.

My kids received a school notice recently where it said: Two sevenyear-old girls were approached by a male who offered to help them push their bikes up a hill. That is an example of attempted loan sharking.

This is the last of the seven manipulation strategies I’ve exposed — I hope that you were empowered finding out about them. Remember, manipulations strategies are subtle forms of violence that often lead to physical violence. Manipulation strategies are not always used for sinister intent, but either way, you need to recognise them so you can look through them, and often, you’ll be pleased that you did.

There are various stories about how the cake was invented. Two common threads of all the stories are that it was invented on the Isle of Capri, and the cake was an accident. Cool heads on Life Flight air ambulance ■ Dave Greenberg ■ Life Flight crewman

The Auckland Life Flight air ambulance had a major drama of its own on the night of Saturday, June 11, when an engine fire warning light sounded during an approach to Wellington airport.

Greenberg says 25 minutes from landing the crew adopted proper procedure and shut down the engine, then declared an emergency. ‘‘They were coming in on one

engine, but pilots are trained for oneengined emergencies,’’ he says. ‘‘They were calm and collected throughout the whole thing.’’

The plane landed without incident, and the fire turned out to be a false alarm.

In fact the crew, who were collecting a sick child from Hutt Hospital to transport to Auckland, simply carried on, taking the Wellington plane back to Auckland.

Greenberg jokes that one-engine landings are often better because ‘‘they

concentrate harder’’.

The Wellington Rescue Helicopter got involved in a job for the Wairarapa police on June 9 to help with the arrest of an unruly and intoxicated tramper at Powell Hutt in the Tararuas.

A school tramping group had raised the alarm when the man, who arrived at the Hutt with his girlfriend, began drinking and behaving irrationally. ‘‘It would have been a five-hour walk in,’’ says Greenberg.

Instead the helicopter collected armed police and a police dog at the

bottom of Mt Holdsworth, and landed them close to the hut. ‘‘We flew out the offender and his girlfriend. ‘‘Not something we do normally, but it’s keeping the police and public safe. ‘‘There’s never a boring week in Wellington — just different weeks.’’

Thanks to a Lotteries Grant, the helicopter has now been fitted with a 30-million-candlepower searchlight, which can also switch to an infrared beam to assist the crews’ infrared search goggles.

Historic hatpins

Hatpins were designed to secure a woman’s hat to her head by pinning it to her hair. Practical and beautiful, they have been worn since the middle ages, but were especially common in late Victorian times when large ornate hats were fashionable. If you were wealthy you were likely to have an extensive wardrobe of elaborate hats, and a holder for your range of hatpins. This particular object is from the Museums Wellington collection on display at the Colonial Cottage Museum.

By the mid 1800s, women were giving up the bonnet ribbons used to keep their hats on their heads and opting instead for hatpins to do the job. The mass-produced white or black bead on a pin was the basic ‘‘working girl’’ hatpin, but for those who could afford them, high-end hatpins were made by jewellers from brass, silver, gold, glass, ivory, pearl and even emeralds.

Late Edwardian fashion saw women wearing very large hats, and to keep them on, very long hatpins were needed. The women’s rights movement during the early 1900s came with a fear of radical women bearing 12’’ long hatpins. An American law was even passed preventing hatpins from being longer than nine inches as it was believed women were using them as weapons.

With the shorter hatpin law, smaller hats became necessary. The flappers of the 1920s wore cloche hats very close to the head which seldom required hatpins. Eventually demand for hatpins decreased as fashion for large hats declined.

Today, hat wearing is not an expected part of female dress and hatpins have turned from being a practical accessory into a ‘‘collectable’’, — something that is valued because it’s rare, unusual or simply beautiful.

Times change, and CityLife is changing with them. So it is that our editor has decided to call time on my fortnightly contributions, as part of a general makeover of the opinion pages.

I’ve been writing this piece for about three years now. I’ve never tried to get everyone agreeing with me — I’d have to choose pretty bland topics for that to happen anyway — but rather to get people thinking about things from an angle that they haven’t considered before. I would rather that people disagree thoughtfully than agree without thinking.

On the odd occasions that I have reported the news rather than expressing my opinion on it I have tried to maintain my neutrality. This hasn’t always been easy — for example, refraining from expressing my delight when the decent, honest, upstanding St Pat’s Town students managed, as expected, to win the McEvedy Shield, or from expressing my disappointment when they didn’t — but I’ve tried.

Thanks to editor Andrew and his predecessor Bernie for the chance to write. Only two pieces have been rejected — one because of a lack of local relevance, the other because it was too controversial (don’t they know that Controversy is my middle name?) — and I had to put up a spirited fight to get one other published. Now that this gig is over I’ll have to get back to updating my website (link below) more often. I hope to see you there.

It is winter and there will be the normal winter colds and flu. Handing your child to a carer is tough — and so is picking the carer says Julia Proverbs

HOOSING the right childcare for your little one can be an emotional process. It’s a huge step, so when you drop your child off, you want to make sure you are both happy with the environment.

But, while you want the best for your child, practicalities also play a part — you need to consider what suits your schedule and your budget.

In New Zealand we are lucky to have a range of options — from nannies, to in-home carers, to day-care centres.

Nannies:

A nanny is someone who cares for children in their own home. If you have two or more children at home, this can often be a cheaper option. The average hourly rate for a nanny is between $12 and $15 in provincial areas, but can be as high as $26 in Auckland. The advantages of a nanny are greater 8193562AA 35/A

flexibility and having your child at home.

Home-based care:

This is care provided in your own home or, more usually, that of the caregiver.

You can expect to pay between $4 and $6 an hour — less than a lot of other services, because it is not as costly as running a centre and often the carers are not as educated as those at other services. The benefits are smaller groups of children (a maximum of four under 6 and never more than two under 2s) and a family environment.

Day care:

Day-care centres offer all-day or partday teacher-led care. Costs vary, but you can expect to pay between $4 and $7 an hour. The majority of centres have separate areas for under-2s and over-2s to cater for their different needs. A good day care will have enough staff to spend quality time with all the children.

Montessori:

The educational philosophy of Montessori is to place all children at the centre of society and to assist

them in becoming caring, selfmotivated and fulfilled individuals, able to create a sustainable and peaceful future for humanity. The classroom is multi-aged, with an emphasis on ‘‘hands-on’’ learning materials. Children learn practical life skills to help them develop concentration and focus.

Kindergarten:

Kindys traditionally provide morning and afternoon sessions for different age groups, but an increasing number are providing all-day (up to six hours) care. Due to their popularity, they often have waiting lists and the age your child starts can depend on availability.

One of the biggest differences is that all kindergarten teachers must be registered teachers. The cost is also a lot lower — around $2 to $5 a session

— and the ratio of teachers is around 1:15 compared to 1:5 at other services.

As it is part-time, it may not be suitable for working parents.

Kohanga Reo

At Kohanga Reo (which means ‘‘language nest’’), the only language spoken is Te Reo Maori and parents and whanau are closely involved. The aim is to totally immerse children so that they learn the Maori language and culture, including the spiritual dimension. Costs vary depending on the individual whanau.

Born and bred in Island Bay, Ian Logan worked on this series of watercolours after returning from the UK where he has been living since 1998.

He says coming back to New Zealand has made him realise how much he has progressed as an artist. ‘‘The colours are more subtle over there (in the UK) so perhaps it’s taught me to look at the colours more carefully. Looking at another landscape has helped me look at this landscape (in Island Bay) more carefully, or with fresh eyes.’’

Logan says there is something about the rocks, the sea and the light he can look at and paint from the family home overlooking Taputeranga island. ‘‘I like the rugged side of nature. It’s always changing. A storm comes in, and then it’s calm, and there are different colours.’’

His work is based on the saying: ‘‘An artist is a liar who tells the truth’’, emphasising colour or light to make a landscape look like what he feels when looking at it.

Logan says he learnt by ‘‘looking over the shoulder of other artists’, including his

father who inspired him to take up painting.

He studied art history at Victoria University, and exhibited in various galleries in Wellington in the 1980s.

He opened his own gallery in Island Bay in the 1990s before moving to Europe to further a music career. While overseas he took part and organised exhibitions at the National Trust’s Sutton House in Hackney and Stoke Newington Library Gallery.

He also presented his work at the New Zealand House in London and at ‘‘Blanc et Blanc’’ in Paris.

Logan moved in 2006 to Aberdeen to paint the Scottish landscapes and ‘‘enjoy the new challene of painting in sub-zero temperatures in the snow’’.

Even though he has an interest in cubism like his father had, he is influenced by impressionist painters and wants to continue painting landscapes. ‘‘There is not enough time in your life to explore every style. My focus now is on colour,’’ he says.

On St. Catherine’s Mission Day a table was set up outside the Community Centre in Bay Rd, with free acrylic beanies offered to any child who wanted one. It was well received.

Also appreciated were the lovely home-baked pikelets, cream and jam made for the Drop In members by two St Catherine’s pupils. As the volunteer-in-charge commented, “The two plates of pikelets all disappeared within ten minutes and were enjoyed by all”. It was good to have the pupils involved in the community.

Jazzing up the community

Rongotai College year 13 student and prefect Simon Cross has had two pieces of good news in the past few weeks.

Shortly after being told he would be joining the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra, he also received a gold award for his involvement in multiple community service projects over the years.

Originally a clarinetist, Simon now plays the saxophone in the school jazz group with teacher Greg Crayford and goes to the New Zealand School of Music on Saturdays. He says he always wanted to play jazz and the saxophone but had to start with the clarinet because his hands were not big enough. ‘‘I like the improvisation side. It’s a chance to really be creative rather than reading what’s on the page. And also I like sharing music with the people who play.

Everybody in a band contributes their little bit.’’

Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Herbie Hancock are but some of the jazz musicians he is influenced by.

He had been selected to be part of the New Zealand Youth Jazz Orchestra last year, and is ecstatic about joining it again this year. ‘‘It gives you an opportunity to perform in a higher level band then you normally would,’’ he says.

The band will tour with directors Rodger Fox and David Lisik, and guest soloist, New York trombonist John Fedchock, and will attend the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival in Blenheim.

It will also play in Wellington with the Rodger Fox Wellington Jazz Orchestra.

Earlier this month, Simon saw his community service work rewarded with a gold award he received at a school assembly.

The president of Rongotai Interact Club, he has completed 25 different services for the community, including street collection for charities and helping as a marshall at the Newtown Festival. ‘‘The school recognises that I’ve done lots

Kids shine for Matariki

Brooklyn School celebrated Matariki with a mid-winter community gathering on the night of June 9.

Around 400 people took part in a torchlight treasure hunt, a massed dance in which people learned the Matariki star names to the tune of the Macarena, poi-making, flax weaving, story-telling, a pot-planting and gardening information session, a disco for children, and enjoyed food and live music.

Families then went home and flicked their house lights on and off at 8.30pm, creating a ‘‘community constellation’’ dubbed the Brooklyn Sparkle, to end the evening on a magical note.

It is hoped the celebration becomes an annual event on the Brooklyn community calendar.

Ten years of hard work to get the club back on track have come to fruition, with Worser Bay Life Saving Club receiving three awards at the recent Capital Coast Awards of Excellence.

Tessa Bruin was named Under-19 Life Guard of the Year, while lifeguards Murray Phipps-Black and Brook Rapson’s efforts were recognised with the Rescue of The Year award and chairman Grant Rae received the Volunteer of The Year prize.

Mr Rae says it had been a long time since the club had received this sort of recognition. ‘‘The club has been rejuvenated. It’s coming up from a time when it was closed 10 years ago. We won many awards in the past and then it went into recess.’’

There has been good progress in the past few years, even if the club is still trying to build up its lifeguard numbers by encouraging young people to join. ‘‘Last summer we had about 25 qualified lifeguards, but we had about 10 who turned up regularly for patrol. We need four patrolling at one time. We had very few lifeguards doing long hours,’’ says Mr Rae. Tessa Bruin, 17, who did more than 50 hours, was one of them. ‘‘She is very good with people and a good team player, always keen to try and help out.’’

Mr Rapson, who lives across the road from the club, saw the ferry was not looking good with its nose going into the water, called Mr PhippsBlack, the IRB co-ordinator, and they both went to assist. ‘‘It could have been ugly.

Thankfully it happened reasonably close to shore,’’ says Mr Rae. He considers the Volunteer

of the Year award he received a recognition of the club’s progress; not a single person’s work.

His role as chair is to lead the fundraising effort, write the newsletter, help coordinate various activities, and try to generate publicity for the club.

Mr Rae says the club is grateful for the support it gets from Surf Life Saving NZ, Wellington City Council, NZ Community Trust, Endeavour

Community Trust and the Eastern Suburbs Sports Trust. ‘‘We want to help reduce the number of drownings. We can always do with more members and lifeguards, but at the end of the day we have what we have and we make the most of it.’’

The club is currently fundraising for a gear trailer, and continues to fundraise to replace equipment.

It celebrated its centenary in January this year.

South Wellington’s midwinter Knack Market should provide a welcome escape from the cold this Saturday.

The Knack is a community craft market that originated in 2007 to meet the fundraising needs of Berhampore School. It has been successful both for Berhampore School and for local crafters who now have a reliable place to sell their products every winter, spring, summer, and autumn. ‘‘Knack is open to anyone whose work fits the criteria of beautiful, original, and New Zealand-made,’’ says organiser

Justine Fletcher.

A wide range of arts and crafts is represented. ‘‘Ceramics, jewellery, painting, woodwork, clothing, photography, paper-craft, sculpture, bags, knitting and mosaics are just a few examples of what our clever stallholders make. We also have a strong emphasis on recycled work, and work produced in a sustainable way,’’ she says.

Berhampore School has a history of hosting ethnic food fairs. The Knack Market builds on this tradition, as it draws on the cultures of at least fourteen different countries, as repre-

sented at the school. There is often the opportunity to try something authentic and interesting.

The Knack Market is run on a shoestring budget. Justine is one of a small, but dedicated, team working hard each season to put the event together. ‘‘There are a lot of craft markets around these days. We try to sustain a high-quality event and to guarantee our stallholders and attendees a well-organised and enjoyable day out,’’ she says.

In return for a stall table hire fee, Berhampore School provides a hall, live music,

fresh food, coffee and an eftpos service. There is assistance provided for both setting up stalls and packing down.

Plenty of parking is available, and in summer the school pool is open to the public.

There is entertainment for the children so the adults can browse in peace. The market also provides the opportunity for children to sell their own wares.

Wellington City Council’s 2010 Climate Change Action Plan received a Ministry for Environment Green Ribbon Award in the ‘Reducing our Greenhouse Gas Emissions’ category.

The Green Ribbon Awards, established in 1989 by then Prime Minister Geoffrey Palmer, recognise the outstanding contributions of individuals, organisations, businesses and communities for protecting and enhancing New Zealand’s environment. ‘‘It is wonderful to see the work of our Climate Change team — and all our committed Council staff — recognised nationally. Greater Wellington Regional Council has announced a 3 per cent increase in fare revenue from September 1.

Some fares on buses and trains will be increased to provide this additional revenue.

Double delight for opera fans Wellington G&S Light Opera is showcasing a double bill performance and tour of Trial

By Jury and HMS Pinafore with music by Arthur Sullivan and libretto by W. S. Gilbert.

Trial by Jury is a short opera, only 40 minutes, and alone of the G&S operas contains no spoken dialogue, but there are many people who consider it to be the most perfectly constructed of the whole series.

The absurdities that can come from a breach of promise case, when the sensibilities of the jury and the judge are affected, was just the sort of subject to inspire Gilbert, who had originally trained to be a lawyer, and the libretto he produced in turn inspired Sullivan to write some of his most sparkling music.

HMS Pinafore was the fourth collaboration between Gilbert & Sullivan and their first blockbuster hit. Pinafore is among the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan operas, perhaps because of its infectious tunes and generally well-constructed libretto.

Gilbert imbued HMS Pinafore with mirth and silliness to spare. The opera’s gentle satire reprises and builds upon one of The Sorcerer’s themes: Love between members of different social classes. The gentlemanly Captain of the Pinafore, who claims that he would never swear at his crew, does not know that his daughter has fallen in love with a common sailor serving on her father’s ship.

Matthew Ross, concertmaster of the Vector Wellington Orchestra, is the conductor for this season. Direction is by Gillian Jerome, who directed the G&S seasons of

Steven Spielberg helped produce this fantasy thriller set in small-town America in 1979.

A group of schoolkids led by precocious director Charles (Griffiths) are filming part of a zombie movie at a railway station. His film captures a truck crashing into a moving train, spilling millions of strange vibrating cubes, as they flee the carnage. What follows is unexplained disappearances of objects and people, as well as other horrific ‘‘accidents’’, that baffles the local deputy Jackson (Chandler), as much as the townsfolk.

When the boys review their footage they discover something supernatural afoot — it is soon apparent that thousands of lives are at stake if a giant, extremely powerful alien, held captive to the US government since the 1950s, isn’t given the tools to leave Earth.

As a coming-of-age drama, it starts off well enough, with the historic setting adding to the appeal. Abrams’ setpieces and late-70s soundtrack reflect the time well, and the child actors are pretty good by child standards, reminiscent of those from classics like The Goonies.

Like with War of the Worlds (which Fanning’s sister Dakota starred in), the family bickering becomes farcical when a community is being ravaged by an uncontrollable force. Unlike Spielberg’s early alien works, the extra-terrestial is introduced far too late to allow much character development. Thus it is hard to be sympathetic towards it after all the death and destruction it causes.

There also one or two historical inaccuracies, and in an unfortunate irony, the pace of the film slows as it heads towards it corn-syrupy climax, with the dialogue and direction degenerating accordingly.

However those who may be put off by cliched alien drama should remember the central theme of the movie is Charles’ Super 8 production. The completed film is played back during the credit roll, and although amateurish, is worth sticking around for. ★★★
