The school managed 11 scholarship passes in 2014 when in previous years the number was no more than three.

MBC principal Wayne Hegarty says it shows the money from the Gold and Blue scheme from the Marlborough College Charitable Foundation is having a big impact and is being channeled to the needs of the pupils to improve their education needs.

The scheme, which started in 2011 with Marlburians and Old Boys pledging $100 a month for a 36-month period, has pupils like George opportunities to learn outside the region.

George plans to study medicine at Otago University next year and has already received funding from the scheme to spend time at a hall of residence while studying genetics.

He also hoped to be part of MBC’s scholarship success in 2015.

At the beginning, staff suggested it gave the school “hope”.

“I guess that show’s where we have come from,” Hegarty says.

“The boys can hopefully see that (scholarship results) are possible and with the increased opportunities

it allows for our students we hope that the momentum generated can continue.

Mr Hegarty says the foundation and the Gold and Blue scheme has the ability to become the most important fundraising arm the school has.

The school also relies on the PTA clothes shop and the Marlborough Old Boys’ Association to fill in the games not covered by government funding.

“I’m hoping people will see what and happened and realise that what they have offered has made a difference.

Mr Hegarty would not go into the figures of money spent but believed the scheme allowed for better networking opportunities which had allowed the school to purchase two new vans and a rowing skiff.

The money was also funneled to

pupils who had learning issues, with one in 10 students needing special assistance “We are a decile six school now and it wasn’t that long ago we were decile eight…. “We have a changing demographic.

“We need things that will support all our students and the funding certainly helps that.”

Marlborough Boys’ College Charitable Foundation chairman Domenic Romano says the initial sign-up for Gold and Blue was around 70 but that number had dropped away at the end of the three years.

He says they foundation was looking at new initiatives to boost numbers Mr Hegarty says while arts, sport and leadership and service have been traditionally strong, the academic improvement across all NCEA levels at the school had been immense.

Tua Marina Rodeo Just one of the bucking bulls at the Tua Marina Rodeo held on Blind Creek Road on Sunday afternoon.

Locals braved the inclement weather to watch the entertainment, and take in a variety of entertainemnt including chidlren’s rides, vintage machinery and food stalls.

The non-points rodeo was the 66th annual running of the event.

About $8000 was raised for Tua Marina School and the Tua Marina Residents’ Association.

Rodeo association secretary Jason Gill says the weather saw funds raised and the number of riders drop from last year.

Whaling museum lacks mayor’s support

By Jacob Page The Picton Historical Society (PHS) has been left frustrated after Marlborough mayor Alistair Sowman has refused to write a letter of support to help gain funding for a more than $1million extension of the Picton Heritage and Whaling Museum that now leaves them “dead in the water.”

The PHS wrote to Sowman in December asking for a letter of support that it could submit with funding proposals to agencies like the Canterbury Community Trust and Lotteries Commission.

However, Mr Sowman refused which has led the PHS to conclude he is supporting the newly created

Mr Sowman says he wants to see both entities work together in Picton instead of compete against

each other.

“I haven’t ruled anything out but my preference is for them to work with each other,” Sowman says.

Mediation sessions between the two sides have failed so far.

Picton Museum extension liaison, Dr Bill Brehaut, says without the letter of support from the mayor it’s unlikely the project will get the much needed funding.

Dr Brehaut says an extension is urgently needed because of congestion in the archives and the imminent arrival of the historically significant whale chaser ‘Cachalot’ and the whale boat Swiftsure.

“We have been told during prior

discussion with these agencies that when we get our house in order, namely council support, then we could get back to them.

“As it is now we are dead in the water.”

The extension would also have a glass wall linking it to the existing museum and allow a modern display of the exhibits in line with the Marlborough District Council’s Heritage Strategy.

The museum sees more than 4,000 visitors every year.

The National Whale Centre has seen 2,700 people through the doors since it opened in November.

Man talks his way in to cash with hard luck story

By Jacob Page A suspected con man is tugging on the heart strings of people in Blenheim and getting cash from good samaritans.

Real estate agent Debbie Webster says she was approached by the man and asked for cash after he claimed he had left his wallet in Kaikoura while driving from Blenheim.

“He said he drove from Dunedin at 3am on Saturday and stopped to have breakfast in Kaikoura before continuing to Blenheim.”

After giving the man $30 she continued on her work day thinking she had done a good deed only to be told by a client she had been duped.

“Apparently he’s been doing this for the past week.”

Marlburians have also taken to Facebook to voice their concerns.

Marlborough area commander Inspector Simon Feltham says the man is not breaking any laws.

He says it’s like people giving money to a homeless man who is asking for food and then going to buy alcohol instead.

Feltham says if people are approached by the man they should say no.

Webster says the man was aged in his 50s of medium, stocky build with stubble.

He was also carrying a small backpack.

“You just don’t expect this sort of thing in a small town; you’d like to think people help each other out.”

Posts from others on Facebook say he has brown eyes and a red complexion and a large nose.

Long-term plan budgets The Marlborough District Council had set aside $2.65 million to help improve Renwick’s water supply in the long-term plan.

The money will cover earthquake strengthening for existing reservoirs and the introduction of water metering, all to be completed before the end of 2019.

Renwick’s water supply could be connected to a well in the Condors area, or to the Blenheim water supply.

Bins approved The Marlborough District Council has approved six recycling containers to be placed in smaller communities around Marlborough from July 1.

The bins will be located in Renwick, Rarangi, Tua Marina, Rapaura, Spring Creek and Grovetown.

Renwick and Rarangi currently already have containers. The two bins were shared around the six centres as part of council’s recycling trials in smaller communities.

New waste facility mooted

By Adam Poulopoulos The Marlborough District Council is proposing a new waste sorting facility which it hopes will ease the burden on the existing landfill.

The Commercial Industrial Sorting Facility will be a building similar in size to the resource recovery centre, and will sit on the Blenheim Transfer Station site.

The plans were displayed at a resource centre open day on Saturday.

The CIF will receive mixed waste, and will use conveyor systems, magnets and a screened cylinder called a trommel to divert cardboard, plastic, glass

and other recyclable materials from the landfill.

It will receive up to 12,000 tonnes of waste a year, and council hope it will divert about 60 percent of material when fully functional.

It will cost $2.95 million to build, which will be paid for by gate fees.

Vehicles dropping off waste will be weighed before and after they dump it to calculate the fee.

“It would extend the life of the landfill by about 13 years, so it defers the cost of building a new one.

“Currently we’re burying piles of plastic, cardboard and brick, so if we can separate it out it would allow us to be more efficient.”

The CIF is currently up for public consultation. If it is approved by council in June, construction will begin in September and be completed by July next year.

By Adam Poulopoulos Another chapter in the storied history of the Edwin Fox was written on Saturday as the boat was handed over to the Marlborough Heritage Trust.

Edwin Fox Society chairman Chris Brown handed control of the boat over to heritage trust chairman Robin Cox at a ceremony on the museum ship.

In return, Cox handed Brown a shilling, symbolising the sum the Edwin Fox Society paid to purchase her in 1965.

The society will now cease to exist, but Brown says he is happy with the new arrangement.

“It’s now in safe hands. I can see it carrying on many hundreds of years into the future.”

The ship was completed in India in 1853, and served in the Crimean War before making its way to New Zealand. She carried 751 emigrants in four voyages here, before being used as a freezer ship and a coal hulk.

She was left to rot in Picton before the Edwin Fox Society bought her, but for about 20 years afterwards she lay unattended in Shakespeare Bay, where she rotted and was vandalised.

She was restored and moved into drydock in 1999, and she has been used as a museum ever since.

A new steering wheel, manufactured by Marlborough Woodworkers’ Guild members, was also unveiled at the ceremony.

More rain needed to ease dry conditions Sunday’s rain coupled with householder water conservation has slowed the march toward stronger water restrictions.

But Marlborough District Council water scientists and engineers say there has been nowhere near enough rain yet to break the drought.

The Renwick aquifer levels are still extremely low – the recent rain has not had significant impact and the forecast is for more high temperatures in the week ahead.

However Renwick householders have been paying heed to the call for conservation in order to avoid the likelihood of stricter controls.

Council operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney says residents in the township are now using less than 30 litres/ second at peak times, a level which allows the town’s water supply pumps to cope.

“Renwick people are responding well to our call to be careful with their water; on Friday they even managed to reduce peak demand to just 24 l/s which really made a difference.”

The rain did boost the flow in both the Awatere and Waihopai Rivers.

In the upper catchment of the Wairau River, some rain gauges had recorded up to 15 millimetres of rain by late on Sunday, and council staff hope that rainfall, combined with another release of water from Lake Argyle into the Wairau River by Trustpower, will be enough to enable some Wairau Class B consent holders to take some water this week.

However there is concern about the situation in Havelock where monitoring is showing that saltwater intrusion into the water supply is rising.

Rates increase released

Councillors have approved a draft budget that would see an increase in rates and charges of 3.2 percent levied for the coming year.

The decision was made following a council budget meeting on Thursday.

The budget figures will not be confirmed until public submissions have been received and considered.

Councillors voted in support of two measures which brought the rates rise down from the 3.61 percent originally projected.

They will remove $500,000 earmarked to meet future community requests for

funding projects that may emerge from the submissions process, and have increased some library fees.

However councillors rejected two other suggestions that they make further savings, by amending the timing of small township upgrades that have a rating impact of $23,000, and by increasing dog fees rather than sticking with an earlier decision to pay a portion of animal control costs from rates.

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says core infrastructure will account for the majority of the budgets for next year and the decade ahead.

As for the parking building, it seems to be a “white elephant”.

Now Mayor Sowman and the council are putting in more metered parking to force us to use the aforesaid parking building.

Council and Renwick water supply Dear Ed, According to the 2013 Local Governance Statement; Section 40 (1) Local Government Act 2002 (a) The functions, responsibilities and Activities of the Local Authority, (MDC) One of these functions is WATER SUPPLY! This is not being done in Renwick.

In the 2013 Census 2118 people lived in Renwick, and increase of 243 from he 2006 Census, and the MDC have gained and used the subdivision money, building permit money and rates money from some of these residents, and have not updated or made an attempt to increase the supply of water to Renwick residents.

I agree that we have to preserve water, as there is a drought and do not care if my grass is brown, but I have a

vegetable garden which needs to be watered and know of many residents who also have vegetable (not flower) gardens and fruit trees they should be able to water according to SECTION 40 (1) the MDC need to supply.

With the increase of housing and residents there should be an increase of core facilities, WATER being one of the most important ones.

The MARLBOROUGH DISTRICT COUNCIL allowed and approved these new subdivisions and housing to proceed in Renwick so therefore should under SECTION 40 (1) SUPPLY WATER! As ratepayers Renwick residents need to email the MDC and Government officials and get this sorted.

Keeping it natural Marlburian Kerrie Bell and Italian Cristina Cocchi met about five years ago, and now run two businesses together.

They spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about their healthcare and food ranges, and their plans to continue expanding.

Ten years ago Marlborough woman Kerrie Bell began making healing balm for family and friends – now, with the help of a friend that passion has become a business.

Kerrie and Cristina Cocchi run Iolite, a line of healthcare products which are 100 percent naturally sourced.

The pair met in 2010 through a mutual friend, after Cristina came over from Italy to finish a thesis for her plant science degree.

Kerrie, who was born-and-raised in Blenheim and has a Bachelor of Health Science, says the pair clicked straight away.

“We combined our powers of plants and health to develop the skin products.

“We were sick of buying moisturiser from the supermarket and wondering what a certain ingredient was, so we set out to develop a range that was 100 percent natural.”

The line was also inspired by one of their other ventures – the pair produces pump primer under the ‘Blue Rock Limited’ name.

“All our clients were working with concrete and had dry skin, so they were looking for a cream,” Cristina says.

“We were already making healing balm and we decided to expand.”

Kerrie and Cristina did all of Iolite’s photography, packaging and signage themselves.

The range includes products like body oil, facial serum and aftershave serum, and has proven successful.

Kerrie says she has perfected the healing balm recipe over a decade of making it, and says it can be used to treat insect bites, burns, bites, scarring and even athletes’ foot.

“A shop in Kaikoura said they would only sell it if we could treat a customer’s cracked heels which couldn’t be healed, so we gave them a pot to test.

“It ended up working, and now the shop stocks it.”

As well as both women’s and men’s products, the range includes a multipurpose healing balm for animals, known as ‘Anim’All.’ The product can be applied to cuts or sores animals have on their feet, but can also be used to treat ailments like mud

fever in horses.

Long-term, the pair hopes to add shampoo and conditioner to the line.

The products are sold at the artisan market once a month, as well as at the Community Care Pharmacy inside The Warehouse, and the Asian organic store on Queen Street.

Alongside the healthcare line Kerrie and Cristina run New Zeataly, a food venture which incorporates cooking lessons, catering and food products, including pasta.

The business features lasagne and tortellini, which were both made famous in Bologna, Cristina’s home town in the north of Italy.

The products are produced locally, but are influenced by Cristina’s Italian upbringing and are made using traditional recipes.

Kerrie and Cristina still rent a kitchen to prepare the pasta, but hope to keep expanding in the future.

In a few months they hope to start a shop where they can stock their healthcare and food products side-by-side, and supply pizza and pasta to restaurants.

The everyday stress of work, family and finances can take a toll on your health.

Author of ‘Take the Stress Out of Your Life’ Jay Winner says stress doesn’t only make us feel awful emotionally, but it can also exacerbate just about any health condition.

Studies have found many health problems related to stress.

Stress seems to worsen or increase the risk of conditions like obesity, heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, depression, gastrointestinal problems, and asthma.

Still, you might be wondering why, why would stress make us sick?

Why would an emotional feeling wreck havoc on our bodies?

Stress isn’t only a feeling. “Stress isn’t just in your head,” Winner says.

“It’s a built-in physiologic response to a threat. When you’re stressed, your body responds.

“Your blood vessels constrict, your blood pressure and pulse rise, you breathe faster and your bloodstream is flooded with hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline.

“When you’re chronically stressed, those physiologic changes, over time, can lead to

health problems.”

Many people may feel skeptical about stress management. After all, our lives are just plain stressful.

We have busy jobs, families to raise, tight finances, and no time to spare. Stress management might seem like a nice idea, but completely impossible.

It’s true that you might not be able to remove all the stressful things from your life. But you can change how you respond to them, Winner says.

That’s what stress management is all about.

• Breathe deeply. Just a few minutes of deep breathing can calm you and tame the physiologic stress response • Reframe the situation. So you’re already running late, but rather than swearing and getting worked up, get a different perspective. Look at that time as an opportunity, a few minutes to yourself where you don’t have any other obligations.

• Keep your problems in perspective. The next time you’re feeling stressed out, think about the things for which you’re grateful.

• Learning some relaxation techniques, meditation, or yoga will help with stress management too.

Are you gluten sensitive or do you have coeliac disease?

How do you tell the difference?

Gluten sensitivity is associated with unpleasant symptoms after eating wheat or food containing gluten found in wheat, barley, rye and oats.

There are varying degrees of gluten sensitivity which causes a number of allergies and symptoms.

Symptoms can include: stomach/abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhoea or constipation, gastric reflux, heartburn, fatigue, weakness and lethargy, lack of growth, iron deficiency, dermatitis, eczema or bad skin, infertility, sinus problems, osteoporosis, moody, lack of concentration, sleeping problems and many more.

Coeliac disease is a permanent, autoimmune disorder caused by an intolerance to gluten which is found in wheat, barley, oats and rye.

This reaction to gluten causes the body to produce antibodies which damage the lining of the small bowel and make it impossible for the body to absorb vitamins, minerals and other nutrients from food.

Symptoms can include: diarrhoea, fatigue,

weakness/lethargy, anaemia , weight loss, constipation, flatulence and abdominal distension, cramping, bloating, nausea and vomiting.

Less common symptoms include bruising, ulcers, miscarriages, infertility, muscle spasms, vitamin deficiencies, skin rashes and altered mental alertness.

In children it can include all of the above as well as retarded growth, abdominal distension, pain, flatulence and irritability.

How to get diagnosed A diagnosis cannot be made simply by you trialing a gluten free diet and feeling better/symptom free. If a gluten free diet has already been adopted, the tests used to diagnose coeliac disease are unreliable, and can be falsely negative.

It is important that if you think you have coeliac disease to first talk to your doctor.

You should mention if a relative has coeliac disease and/or dermatitis herpetiformis or if you or a family member has been treated for anaemia.

Crew needs helping hand to make nationals

By Adam Poulopoulos The Rarangi under-23 men’s surf boat crew have won the New Zealand Surf Boat Series, but need a financial boost to make it to Gisborne for nationals.

Haack Construction, a sponsor of the team, is hosting a garage sale on Saturday and Sunday, beginning at 8am on both days.

Windows, benches, sinks and other similar items will be sold, with proceeds going towards getting both the under-23 men’s and women’s crews to nationals between March 13 and 15.

Men’s sweep Neil Watts says he budgeted to go to nationals but with the men’s crew being named as the New Zealand development crew to face Australia at Waihi earlier this month, his figures “went out the window.”

The trip will cost about $650 for

each of the eight crew members.

Watts says the crews will head away, but he was hoping the garage sale would ease the financial burden on the club.

A successful season for the men’s crew continued over the weekend as they won the surf boat nationals despite not competing in the final round at Piha.

Watts says a lack of funds was also behind that decision.

“We couldn’t afford to go to Piha two weeks before nationals and break gear, so we hoped our prior results got us through.

“We’re not like the big clubs – you go to Piha or Red Beach and they have boxes of gear sitting there.

“For us, what’s on the boat is what we have.”

In the end, two firsts and a third in the previous three rounds were enough to secure the under-23 title.

Both crews are set to raise long and short-course events at nationals, the final tournament of the season.

Watts says with one men’s crew member advancing to open age, the club will decide whether to advance

the under-23 crew to the open grade or form a new open crew ahead of the new season.

Twenty five teams compete Marlborough Junior Volleyball’s Spikers competition got underway last Friday afternoon at Stadium 2000 with 25 teams competing in five different Grades according to age and ability. All players are aged from Years 5-8.

In the premier grade St Marys Setters played the Kina Munchers from Bohally.

Both teams took a while to warm up and it was obvious that a few players were a bit rusty after the summer holidays and did quite a few ‘lifts’ of the ball. However, it was pleasing to see both teams serving was consistent, but St Marys passing was better than Bohallys which helped them secure the first set win 25-19.

In the second set the Kina Munchers really came out fighting with some good serving

and improved passing and streaked ahead to a good early lead. Then Bohally eased off the pressure a little while St Marys dug deep and evened the score at 22-22. With the pressure on there were a few missed serves and the score teetered till the Kina Munchers nudged ahead by the required two points at 27-25.

The last set Bohally had too many serving streaks and St Marys comeback was too late. It was still a close scoreline of 25-19.

Well done to both teams.

Ben Dalton had a good game for St Marys chasing the ball several times while Josh Whittal showed why he deserved to be in his Bohally team with some fantastic setting.

The competition continues on Friday.

Powerboating at Lake Rotoiti The sound of 500 horsepower V8 engines will echo down the valleys at Lake Rotoiti this weekend as the Pelorus Jack and AE Baker trophys are contested.

Charlotte Annie Holgate (nee Whitehouse) was a one-time teacher turned highly respected nurse who spent the early part of her career in Wellington.

When war broke out in 1914 Charlotte was 53-years-old and was the Director Nurse of Seddon.

At her own expense she embarked on the Ionic in December 1914 and headed to Europe with the intention of offering her services at the front line. She enlisted with the French Flag Nursing Corps (FFNC.) in France working in military hospitals firstly in Lesieux and then Neufchateau, Vosges.

The FFNC. was established in 1914 in Britain to supply trained nurses from Britain and the Commonwealth to French

military hospitals.

In France most nursing up until WW1 had been carried out by nuns as it was deemed unseemly for French girls to take up nursing as a career and as a result there was an urgent need for qualified nurses at the Front.

The scale of the medical care needed and the relentless work took a toll on her health and in September 1915 she was invalided back to England.

Yet she still hoped to recover and get back to the action.

Unfortunately this was not to be the case and she remained on the South Coast of England in poor health until she passed away on August 20, 1920, aged 59.

The ceremony will be held at the Seymour Square Cenotaph tonight at 6pm.

Coxed eight rows to gold

By Adam Poulopoulos The Blenheim Rowing Club’s men’s coxed eight were the talk of the boat park after winning gold at the Bankstream New Zealand Rowing Championships at Lake Ruataniwha, Twizel last week.

The eight, an under-17 Marlborough Boys’ College crew rowing for the BRC, won their final in six minutes and 13 seconds, about four seconds quicker than nearest challengers Hawke’s Bay. BRC coach Bill Campbell says the crew, which was sent down mostly to gain experience, gained a lot of attention with their displays.

“They put in big performances in both races (heat and final). They were up against bigger and older opposition who should’ve been a lot tougher.

“They were the talk of the boat park. I won’t tell you what the big fellas called them but they weren’t happy to be beaten.”

Campbell says their race plan worked out perfectly in the final.

“At the halfway mark they were three quarters to a length down, and they slowly moved and moved and won easily in the end.

“They kept at it and wore the other crews down psychologically.”

The crew now begins their secondary school rowing commitments. They head to the South Island Secondary Schools’ Championships

LAMB STARS WITH BAT & BALL Biddy Kates Celtic and Grove Tavern Wairau were the winners as the Marlborough senior grade one-day cricket competition resumed over the weekend.

Captain Jerrym Lamb was the star for Celtic. He took 3-20 as Criterion Hotel were restricted to 169, before scoring an unbeaten 87 off 69 balls as the target was chased down.

In the other game Wairau scored 217 before limiting Guthrie Bowron Renwick to 111.

The Blenheim Rowing Club’s men’s club coxed eight in action. at the same venue in early March, before the Maadi Cup at Lake Karapiro at the end of next month.

“I think we’ll go well in the South Islands – in their age group there’s nothing that will touch them,” Campbell says.

them competing in the top grade as much as possible, so we get an idea of what the can achieve at the Maadi Cup.” The BRC men’s under-19 coxed four also won gold in Twizel, while the Wairau Rowing Club’s men’s premier coxed four finished with silver.

Yak is a wrap Walking, talking and sunshine were the highlights of the second annual Yealands Yak on Saturday.

Seventy-eight teams registered with more than 290 women participating in the six-hour all women team trail event.

The two to eight kilometre trails comprised eight different laps in total, marked by different coloured arrows. The team that collectively covered the

most distance in six hours was ‘Let’s Try This Again’ (Marjolein Edwards, Pam Morris, Jackie MacIntyre, Alison McQuillan, Louise Thurlow and Wendy Llewellyn) who completed 10 laps in five hours and 59 minutes.

The victorious walking team were the ‘Yak Pack’: Kate Cameron-Donald, Brittany Collard, Annie Mahoney and Rosie Mahoney, who knocked off six laps in the six hour race.

The men’s and women’s Southern Pride softball teams had an unsuccessful time at the National Fastpitch Championships in Hamilton over the weekend.

The men’s team finished last of seven teams, and the women’s team was last of six teams.

Both contained Blenheim representatives.

Several rowers from the Blenheim and Wairau rowing clubs have been selected for the Elite and Under-23 National Selection Trials this weekend.

They are among 92 of the country’s top rowers invited to trial for places in the 2015 squads to compete at the Elite World Cup Series and World Championships and the Under-23 World Championships.

The trials begin on Friday and finish on March 5 at Lake Karapiro.
