By Georgia O’Connor-Harding RETAIL SPENDING in Selwyn is on the increase – driven by a growing population, the farming industry, the post-earthquake rebuild and tourism. Latest data shows electronic card retail spending in the district has increased by seven per cent in the year to June. Rolleston Square property manager Rebecca Gregg said it is seeing a positive turnover growth from comparing its year on year sales. “(Selwyn) is the second fastest growing region in New Zealand and there are a lot more people living in the area and there are more subdivisions being built,” she said. Selwyn’s population of close to 59,000 is growing quickly. In 2013 it was 44,595 and by 2025 it will reach almost 70,000. The figures compare with an 1.5 per cent increase for Canterbury and 3.6 per cent increase for the whole country. •Turn to page 3

By Gordon Findlater HORORATA GOLF Club’s Dominic Brettkelly will go into next week’s New Zealand amateur championship at Russley with a genuine chance of stamping his mark in NZ golf history. Brettkelly, 17, would be amongst the genuine contenders no matter where the tournament is being played. However, being at Russley Golf Club the expectations are high. The left-handed golfer practises at the Russley course after finishing school at Christchurch Boys’ High School most days. He also won the senior club championship at Russley last year. “It’s a massive advantage and I feel pretty confident. I’ve got a decent chance to go deep at the tournament but you can’t really think about that,” said Brettkelly. “If I win something like the New Zealand Amateur Championship it opens a lot of doors. My world amateur golf ranking would go up and I’d get exposed to bigger tournaments.” The future is looking bright for Brettkelly, who was introduced to golf as a four-year-old when his grandfather made him a left-handed golf club from an old cattle prod with the head of a five iron attached. Brettkelly is all but confirmed to attend Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green next year. He will head stateside in August, giving him plenty

There has been a 7 per cent increase in retail spending, driven by the dairy industry, a growing population and tourism. When people spend it puts money in the tills of businesses, which expand, which in turn usually means hiring more people (hopefully). That means money in more pockets which in turn gets spent again. •From page 1 The data from economic consultancy group Infometrics’ shows dairy prices slowly recovering from a rough patch of low payouts is having a positive cash flow affect into Selwyn’s retail sector. The total dairy payout was $420 million, up more than $150 million from the previous year, but still down on the record $533 million pay out for the 2013/14 season. Selwyn Business Group member Clint Ward said he had found from talking to other members there had been a spike in retail growth and Benje employment Patterson opportunities. “I think it all came down to the earthquakes to be honest,” he said. Member and business coach Warren Sargent said generally there is an increase in sales and retail but it is difficult to put a measurement against it.

GROWTH: Rolleston Square is an example of retail sales growing in the Selwyn District. “But the confidence when you speak to businessmen is higher,” he said. Hororata Cafe and Wine Bar owner Jarnia Kupe puts the growth of her business down to the developments of the Central Plains Water scheme’s canal in Hororata. She said more workers along with new families moving out to the township have helped the business phenomenally. Mrs Kupe said the business makes its profit between 5.30am and 9am when truck drivers

arrive. “We are open at 5am, they know they can get a coffee and pie . . . you have to go where your market is,” she said. Infometrics senior economist Benje Patterson said while a lot of the extra $150 million from dairy payouts has gone into debt repayment, some of it has filtered through to retail spending. He said dairy prices have risen significantly putting farmers in a much healthier financial position. “Now they are back in the

The report said other parts of the agricultural sector including sheep, beef and horticultural are looking good for the next season. Its optimistic outline for Selwyn’s farming sector has been backed by Federated Farmers Michael Woodward. He said any spare cash left over from repaying debt will go into maintenance offering the likes of engineers or electricians in the district more jobs from farms. Mr Woodward said as a result there is a flow-on affect into retail. Mr Patterson said money is also trickling in from increased tourists who often spend cash on groceries, hospitality outlets and fuel when travelling through Selwyn.

Kirwee’s mobile cell site offers 4G coverage SPARK HAS activated a new mobile cell site in Kirwee, delivering 4G coverage. Kirwee has experienced significant growth since the February 22, 2011, earthquake. According to the district council, Kirwee is forecast to increase its population by 21 per cent in the next five years. Previously, Kirwee has had limited mobile phone coverage, a point of contention for many of its residents. Kirwee Community representative and Scenic Hotel IT manager Chris Clayton has lived in Kirwee for about five years and says that mobile coverage is vital. “This is about connectivity for the town, being able to make calls within the community, being connected and for those of us who have businesses in and around Kirwee – being easily contactable by our customers. ‘‘ Said Spark’s head of South Island Paul Deavoll: “We’re always looking to improve mobile service across New Zealand and we’re excited that Kirwee is now able to access the benefits of 4G.’’

Les gets into recreation at 90 ROLLESTON Community Centre’s Mature and Motivated recreation class is so much fun it has 90-year-olds doing shoulderstands. The class is low impact fun and exercise aimed at active people 50 years and over, and includes activities such as hula hooping, trampoline, exercycling, ball passing, and dancing, all set to a fun, upbeat soundtrack. As well as the physical benefits, the class is a very social occasion, which is nearly always followed with a coffee and chat. At 90, Rolleston resident Les Cotton is a newbie to recreation classes. He started attending following his wife’s death earlier this year. Mr Cotton wasn’t sure about the class at first but after giving it a go says he really enjoys it. “I’ve met a lot of new people and it’s very social, with coffee after. It’s where you go to make new friends.” Pat Jones, 87, has been going to the class for the last six years. She drives into Rolleston from Darfield twice a week. Mrs Jones said she first started the class as a way to stay active, and has continued with it for the people. “I just love it. I’ve made won-

derful friends and the instructor Ingrid is very good. I had an accident two years ago and was so supported by the kind people I’ve met at the class. At Christmas time I buy vouchers for them to the local cafes where we meet after each class. My favourite activity is the rowing machine. It uses every muscle, and I like the challenge. The bike is another favourite of mine,” she said. At only $3 per class, Mature and Motivated is a low-cost way to keep fit. Instructor Ingrid Phelan says the best part about taking the class is the people. “They inspire me – it can be emotional seeing them interacting. The best part of the class is the people and the way they look out for each other. A typical class has 30 people in it, and the same ones turn up both days per week. It’s great seeing them all having fun and having a laugh.” The Mature and Motivated class is held on Tuesdays 11–11.45am and Fridays 12–12.45pm during term times. $3 per session. No booking required. Chance to get to know Selwyn better BUS TOURS are being offered to Selwyn residents interested in getting to know their district better. The Show Me Selwyn tours have been developed out of the district council’s newcomers and migrants strategy, and aim to welcome those new to Selwyn and help them get to know what’s in their backyard. Connecting Communities co-ordinator Tyla Harrison-Hunt said research carried out between 2014 and 2016 showed a need for more opportunities for newcomers to gain access to information about their new home and connect with other newcomers and established residents. “All Selwyn residents are welcome to get to know our beautiful district while making new connections,” he said. Lincoln High students on Nepal expedition fundraiser

By Georgia O’Connor-Harding A LARGE fundraising effort is set to get under way as Lincoln High School students prepare to go to earthquake-ravaged Nepal. It will be the first time the school has taken part in World Challenge – an expedition organisation providing students trips abroad. Students will help communities in Nepal who are still recovering from the 7.8 quake in April, 2015. More than 30 students ranging from year 10 to 12 along with teachers will depart for Nepal in December next year and need to raise about $8000 each. The trip’s managing organiser Kylie Wissel said she thought the trip could be something for the school as it is also a community that has been shaken by earthquakes. While students are yet to lock in an itinerary for the trip, projects could range from building a new classroom at the school to digging trenching irrigation piping for a township. “It is an opportunity to give these guys a destination they

might not ever go to again in their lives,” Mrs Wissel said. As part of the trip, Lincoln will visit its sister school Jumbesi Government School which it has been supporting with fundraisers for the past five years. Students have been divided into permanent teams for both the trip and fundraising projects – Team Everest and

Team Aoraki. Each team has created a food product they will sale at markets. Team Everest is a top-of-theworld ice cream cookie cup with a mini doughnut chocolate syringe. Team Aoraki’s is a Sherpa sherbet spider. The students will hold their first major fundraiser evening

Mrs Wissel said the school will also co-ordinate with Selwyn Sounds to create a gourmet hamper using products from the district’s businesses and can be pre-ordered after the new year. Selwyn’s wearable art By Georgia O’Connor-Harding THE WEIRD and wonderful has been unleashed at a wearable art competition. Art Couture NZ brought its first fashion show to life in Tai Tapu attracting about 150 people through the door. The show judged by designer Loretta Sloan and artists Steve Henderson and Blanche Fryer featured about 29 designs from residents both in Selwyn and beyond. Organiser Kim Strange said the show has received a lot of postive feedback and is already looking at possible venues and dates for next year’s show. “We are just looking at venues because we will need to go bigger,” she said. Mrs Strange said people were stunned at the quality of the garments and people’s creativity. “It was just nice watching everyone’s faces. You just saw everyone getting a lot of pleasure from it . . . we have got very clever people,” she said. The competition hosted by Christchurch city councillor Anne Galloway had costumes

Long-serving volunteer firefighter follows Chief fire officer Donald McMillan, 67, has marked 50 years service to the Southbridge Volunteer Fire Brigade. He spoke to Georgia O’ConnorHarding Fifty years is a big deal. Did you have a great evening celebrating recently? I had a good evening. We had the logistical part one night and then I invited all the family and friends to the fire station another day about a week ago. It was a good day. A lot of people I hadn’t seen for years. It was good to catch up and reminisce. It has gone fast? I remember when I got my 25 year gold star. I thought I would never get to 50 years. I suppose as I said in the speech the other evening “doesn’t time fly when you are having fun.” I have enjoyed it which is good. What led you to becoming a firefighter? My father Trevor was the deputy chief fire officer in Southbridge for a few years.

Southbridge Volunteer Fire Brigade. Dad had actually retired. At the time I thought I don’t know about this. But

anyway I said yes, I will give it a go. It must have been in my blood with my father being in the service. It went on from

there. I have enjoyed it. It has been very rewarding. Do you remember the first time you went out on a job and what happened? The only thing I remember-I think it was to a rubbish pit. It is now called Crossgates Rd but it was sort of on North Rakaia Rd. I can very vividly remember in this pit there was that many rats running around. Rats don’t worry me but it is just something I noticed. You haven’t always wanted to be a firefighter? Until I joined the Southbridge Fire Station I hadn’t made my mind up on where I wanted to be. I think now if I had my time over again I may have become a career firefighter. But I think the volunteer side is just as important as the career side in the Fire Service. We are 24/7. I just hope we never see the day where they are going to start to pay volunteers. I don’t like that idea. Why is that? I think it gets too messy. I think the word volunteer is volunteer and that is it. I think to be part of a volunteer organisation in the size we are is something pretty damn good and pretty damn rewarding.

in father’s footsteps Are Southbridge volunteer numbers growing? We were down to about 14 members for a while and we are now up to 22 again. We have been pretty lucky over the last five to six years. We haven’t had any problems recruiting people. I had a woman probably five years ago – she rang me up one day saying “I wouldn’t mind joining the fire brigade”. I said come down and see me tonight and I will have wee sort of interview and talk about it. I asked what she does and she was a house wife living in Southbridge. She said to me “the first thing I want to ask you is how much do I get paid?” I said “you get paid the same amount as me” and she said “that would be all right”. I said that is nothing. And she got up and walked out. Is there a process for getting into the Fire Service? There is a process. As far as volunteers go we sort of rely on people’s ability and to know they are fit before they join. When they do join they do what we call is a basic firefighters course. They will see what they are like how fit they are. I don’t really know if anyone has failed from not being fit enough because I think people are aware you have got to have a certain level of fitness before you join.

Carrying all that heavy gear would take it out of you? Yes, it does now. It is the heat and things like that. You can get a bit exhausted at times. In the service everyone’s safety is paramount. It is other things like wearing the right protective clothes. It is that bloody hot sometimes. It is nice to take the gear off in a nice cold breeze to cool down. You mentioned you would have been a career firefighter, was there any reason you did not? I don’t think it is any particular reason. The thing was I was working for my father in a family business and I presume that may have been what kept me back. If I had my life over again I would probably do that. There are probably lots of things I would change. Tell me about your career outside the fire. I was actually a blacksmith. Dad was a blacksmith and I just carried on in his footsteps for a number of years. My father taught me the trade. I was learning since I was a child. I used to go to the blacksmith’s shop in Southbridge and just spent time there after school doing bits and pieces welding and all that stuff. When I was probably 10 I was

welding and doing engineering things. Dad said to me when you leave school just follow in my shoes. You have been working with fire for a while. Yes, I also slowly got into what we called pumping water pumps. I spent a number of years doing that and doing irrigation work and in my earlier days I did water supplies for the district council in Rolleston and I did the water supply in Leeston and Dunsandel. I put the main waterline in. I have always been fascinated by water. What is the most difficult part of your job as chief fire officer? We have got so many people in different stages in their careers and different stages in their life. I have seen many people join and many people go. Managing is relatively easy as long as you can talk to people. It is a matter of communicating with people. All those guys as far as I am concerned are equal except for the offices that have a bigger leadership role. I have always felt you have got to lead by example. I like to be part of the team and be there with the guys. I still drive the fire appliance and if they are short I will go as an officer. It is a hands-on thing and it is something I don’t want to lose. •Turn to page 12

Our People Fifty years firefighting service recognised How do you cope attending serious accidents and fatals? We had those three young people killed just down the road from us last Christmas. It was in our patch. We had peer support people come out and talk to us to make sure we were all right. Brigade members talked amongst themselves which was good. I think the guys that went to that call were pretty open about how they felt. The thing is you don’t want to hide things because it is going to bottle up inside you. You have got to let it out. Generally the problem being in districts like Southbridge, Dunsandel and Leeston is you generally know the person. I think it is just a matter of discussing what has happened and getting someone to come and talk to you if you need help. The February 22, 2011, earthquake – we responded to that very early on in the piece. Probably within the first 10 minutes we were asked to respond. We went into Sockburn Fire Station. We gathered there and then they turned us out to the CTV building and the PGC building. We did Colombo St. We saw a lot of dead people. It wasn’t very nice. That was probably the worst thing I have had to do in the whole of my career. How long have you been the

chief fire officer for? Twelve years. I was deputy chief fire officer about 15 years before that. What are the most common type of incidents you have to attend to? Probably scrub fires. People not taking care, lighting little fires on a hot day and then ignoring it. We try to educate these people as do the local authorities. A lot of times it is just people who don’t take care to look after fires. They have to realise these little fires turn into big fires. Sometimes you have to go from three or four a day and you think God almighty when is the next one coming?

Do you have a memorable moment in the Fire Service that jumps out at you? Probably building the new fire station at Southbridge two years ago. I was lucky enough to be chief when that building started. I have sort of seen it right through. I was involved with the planning, involved with the design work. That was probably the most rewarding part because we saw it completed and got a great building out of it. Our old station was absolutely buggered. I suppose you could say the old station was intimate but the new station was a lot bigger and glossier. Tell me about your family? My wife Carolyn has been be-

hind me 100 per cent all the way there. As for my children Simon and Lisa, I said at the speech the other night: “you have to excuse me for not going to all the family picnics and family days out”. We did sit round on hot north westerly days in case the fire alarm went. My wife has been very supportive. She would be the first one out there to help. Where did you go to school? I went to Waitaki Boys’ High School in Oamaru. Got sent away there. I probably would have preferred to stay but I was very big on sport those days. All I did was play sport mainly. Probably my academic skills weren’t that good but sport wasn’t bad. I was

in the second 11. I have played cricket for Ellesmere. Now I look after Southbridge Park. I do all the cricket pitches there. Do you have anything else you like to do in your spare time? I just like spending time with the grandchildren. I have five. I follow rugby quite a bit. I also like watching cricket. The Fire Service is my biggest passion. We will probably have a bit of a holiday while up there. Fire Service has just taken my life I suppose. I said the other night I have met a lot of people in those 50 years and it is just so rewarding. Now every year you go to a conference and talk to people you haven’t spoken to for 12 months.

Your Local Views Working with water Selwyn Waihora Zone Committee chairman Allen Lim writes about where wastewater goes It’s been a wet winter. The Selwyn is flowing again and groundwater levels are rising. Does that mean we can stop worrying about what happens in the dry times? Of course not. More dry weather will come, so we need to press on with our plans to protect our natural environment and future-proof the local economy and our water supplies. Your zone committee is doing just that. In August, for example, we welcomed funding for infrastructure to access water from the Central Plains Water scheme pipeline into the Selwyn River/Waikirikiri. This project will result in more water in the river that has particularly suffered from drought and will go a long way towards restoring swimming sites. Meanwhile, the wet weather has given us an opportunity to see where the water is coming

Eyes on amateur title •From page 1 Last year Brettkelly qualified for the matchplay format at Royal Wellington Golf Club but was defeated on the 20th hole by eventual winner Louis Dobbelaar in the round of 32. Brettkelly says the match play format can sometimes suit his game. “I tend to be a bit erratic sometimes. If you have a triple bogey it doesn’t matter so much compared to stroke play,” said Brettkelly. He will come into the tournament on the back of some strong results. Earlier this month he helped Canterbury win the under-19 boys’ interprovincial golf title in Cambridge. “We lost to Otago in the final a couple of years. It was the final year for a few of us so it was great to get a win with the boys,” said Brettkelly. He also has a few more things he’d like to tick off the list before going to college, including competing in his first New Zealand Open. A number of regional qualifying tournaments will be held in advance of the tournament in March. “I got to the final stage of qualifying last year but didn’t quite make it,” said Brettkelly. With his attention turning purely to golf over the summer his chances of making it will certainly be better than 12 months ago.

Although he’s based in the city for school, Brettkelly returns home to Darfield at the weekends and still plays his home course at Hororata at least once a month. “I love it out there. The people are so nice and they’ve been really supportive and done a lot for me over the years, so I love representing the club when I play,” said Brettkelly. He shares the course record at Hororata of 65 and is the current holder of the club’s championship title. •The New Zealand Amateur Golf Championship runs from November 1-5.

Lincoln student helps Canty to hockey title By Andrew King LINCOLN HIGH’S Abby Kettles was part of the Canterbury under-15 B side that won the national title for the sixth year in a row. The squad travelled to Timaru this month to defend their title. Their only loss came in pool play at the hands of Wanganui (2-3). They beat Manawatu (12-0), Thames Valley (7-0) and Hawkes Bay (4-0) before taking down Waikato 4-0 in the quarter-final. After a tough 2-1 win over host South Canterbury in the semifinal, the girls faced Wellington in the final. Christchurch Girls’ High’s Sophie Bowden slotted home the winner from a penalty corner with 4min to go. She then added another to close out the game 4-2. Villa Maria’s Kate Davies was the top scorer for the side, netting eight goals during the tournament. Canterbury’s under-15 A girls side also won a national title after travelling to North Harbour. Darfield student takes out News under-15 mountain bike title Scott Medal for Lincoln scientist

By Gordon Findlater DARFIELD HIGH School’s Ethan Rose was crowned champion at the South Island secondary school mountain bike championships for the fourth year in a row. Ethan, 14, joined 270 of the South Island’s top young mountain bikers who competed in age groups from under-14 through to under-20 at Signall Hill, Dunedin. The Coalgate resident claimed both the under-15 super-D (a blend of cross-country and downhill) and cross-country titles. He also finished second in the downhill race, which gave him a commanding win in the combined points. Even more impressively, Ethan’s times in both the downhill and super-D were good enough for sixth overall. In his favoured cross-country event, Ethan was pushed early on in the five-lap race before pulling away to win by almost 2min. The racing was made extremely challenging for riders with heavy rain, thunder and lightning making for very muddy courses. Ethan has previously won the under-13 age group over consecutive years (2014, 2015) and won the under-14 age group in 2016.

After getting into cycling at a young age with his parents, Ethan is now coached by David Plew, who also coaches Commonwealth Games gold medallist Anton Cooper. Ethan often trains for cross-country with Cooper and the Oliver brothers Craig and Ben. His hopes for the future are to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Cooper and to also gain a spot

in the national mountain bike performance hub in Rotorua. The hub, which was created last year, provides training and development for both cross-country and downhill riders. Ethan will now turn his attention to the national and Oceania mountain biking championships in 2018. He will step up a grade to the under-17 category at national level this year.

Prebbleton racers go head-to-head By Andrew King TWO YOUNG Prebbleton racers will go head-to-head when the Toyota 86 Championship starts next week. Fifteen-year-old Jaden Ransley will compete against 21-year-old Jack Milligan in the opening round on November 3-5 at Pukekohe. Milligan and Ransley met each other through karting and now live less than a kilometre apart. Both are really good mates off the track, but it is a different story on it. “There’s a rivalry between all the drivers. We are all there to be at the front and Jack is no different to any of the other competitors,” Ransley said. “There is no hatred between us but for sure there is a lot of competition between all drivers.” Milligan recently climbed the podium at Mount Panorama after finishing third in race two in the Toyota 86 Racing Series. He was the only New Zealander in the 36-car field, one of the main support class for the V8 Supercars and also set the fastest racing lap time, just 1/10th slower than the Toyota 86 lap record. Earlier in the week, Milligan showed he was on the pace by finishing the qualifying session with the seventh fastest time.

YOUNG TALENT: Jaden Ransley had never driven a manual-shift car before making his debut in the Toyota 86 Championship. Ransley, who attends St Thomas’, said Milligan’s result in Australia was amazing. ‘There’s a rivalry between all the drivers. boost coming into the season, but I am confident we will be able to match his pace if not be faster throughout the season,” he said. When Milligan was asked what he thought about the youngster saying he could match his pace and possibly be faster, he let out a small chuckle. “We will see about that in the

first round,” he said. Milligan said he was looking forward to getting stuck into the racing and battling Ransley for the title. “It would be great if we end up in a title race. I won the rookie title last year and he was giving me a good run throughout the events,” he said. In spite of his age, Ransley is not new to motorsport.

SPORTS He has raced karts for six years, winning two national KartSport titles and another pair in the South Island. With the opening round of the 2017-2018 Toyota 86 Championship a few weeks away, Ransley said he is taking aim at the title.

Before making his debut in the Toyota 86 Championship, he had never driven a manualshift car and as he goes into this year’s six-round series he is 15, still too young to hold a road licence. Ransley was just 14 when he contested last year’s championship, making him one of the youngest ever. Ransley has received support and advice from Christchurchbased race engineer Andy Neale, who has worked in formula one and took Singaporean Andrew Tang to the Toyota Racing Series title in 2014. Neale has been coaching the youngster throughout his preseason preparation. When the championship kicks off as a support category for the V8 Supercars weekend November 3-5, Ransley will go up against another mentor, Tom Alexander. Alexander won the Championship in 2015 and has been racing in the NZV8s since but returns to drive Kenny Smith’s 86. Totally sold on single-make racing, Ransley said he wants to contest the Australian Toyota 86 Racing Series in 2018 and then move to the Porsche Carrera Cup.

Adams appointed chieftain for games SELWYN MP Amy Adams will wear a new hat soon – she is the chieftain for the Hororata Highland Games. Hororata Community Trust chairman Richard Land said when selecting a chieftain it looks for people who have served the community or has Scottish connections. “Ms Adams has always supported the work of the trust and has been to every event. “She has taken a vested interest in our community and we are thrilled that she accepted our invitation to fill the role of chieftain,” he said. The games will be held on November 11, and usually attracts between 8000-10,500 people. Ms Adams will be the first female chieftain of the Hororata Highland Games Past chieftains have included TVNZ newsreader Simon Dallow, Gerry Brownlee, Governor General Sir Jerry Mateparae and Sir Bob Parker. In Scottish tradition, there is always a chieftain who is the master of ceremonies and a key figure in the day’s activities. Ms Adams’ duties include brandishing of the chieftain’s

Celebrate 120 years of Rewi Alley A celebration to commemorate Rewi Alley’s 120th anniversary will be held at Springfield in December. Rewi Alley was born in Springfield on 2 December 1897. He contributed perhaps more than any other foreigner to the Chinese revolution. He was the founder and inspiration for the NZ China Friendship Society, dedicating 60 years of his life to his adopted country, while remaining a New Zealander at heart. Rewi organised thousands of industrial co-operatives during the war against Japan, and also pioneered technical training schools. He founded the Shandan Bailie School in 1944 in the Gansu Province on the Silk Route. As Rewi affected the lives of many thousands in China, he is highly revered there. A major project in 1997 for centenary of his birth was the establishment of a memorial, park and display in Sheffield. The celebration will be held on Saturday 2 December 2017 at the Rewi Alley Memorial in Springfield at 1.30pm, followed by refreshments in the Tawera Hall.

Rolleston Community Centre’s Mature and Motivated recreation class is a low impact fun exercise class aimed at people 50 years and over, and includes activities such as hula hooping, trampoline, exercycling, ball passing, and dancing, all set to a fun, upbeat soundtrack.

From November 2017 to February 2018 four trial trips will take place, with room for 35 passengers on each bus trip. The destinations will include historical landmarks, tourist attractions, and townships, along with opportunities to enjoy the Selwyn countryside. Following an assessment of the success of the trips, more Show Me Selwyn tours may be planned in the future.

As well as the physical benefits, the class is a very social occasion, which is nearly always followed with a coffee and chat.

Two different routes are available to choose from: · Foothills and Mountains will tour through the Malvern and central Selwyn area, with stops including a visit to Springfield’s famous donut, followed by a guided tour and lunch at Homebush Stables. The two dates for Foothills and Mountains are Saturday 11 November 2017 and Saturday 13 January 2018. · Lake to Pa¯ will take passengers on a trip around the Springs and Ellesmere areas, stopping at the Lincoln market, Taumutu’s Ngati Moki Marae and Taumutu beach. Les wasn’t sure about the class at first but after giving it a go says he really enjoys it. “I’ve met lots of new people and it’s very social with coffee after. It’s where you go to make new friends.” At only $3 per class, Mature and Motivated is a low-cost way to keep fit. Instructor Ingrid Phelan says the best part about taking the class is the people. “They inspire me – it can be emotional seeing them interacting. The best part of the class is the people and the way they look out for each other. A typical class has 30 people in it, and the same ones turn up both days per week. It’s great seeing them all having fun and having a laugh.”

EXOTIC: The false katipo or Steatoda capensis sometimes has a red stripe on its rear, causing it to be mistaken for the native katipo Latrodectus katipo.

Katipo imposter Mike Bowie is an ecologist who specialises in entomology (insects and other invertebrates). Each week he introduces a new species found in his backyard at Lincoln. His column aims to raise public awareness of biodiversity, the variety of living things around us

THE FALSE katipo or Steatoda capensis is one of many exotic spider species found around your back yard. Originally from South Africa, this small shiny black/dark brown spider is very common and sometimes has a red stripe on its rear, causing it to be mistaken for our native katipo, Latrodectus katipo. Along some coastlines, the South African imposter is thought to be out-competing our native katipo, causing significant conservation concern.

Although the two species have similarities, the bite of the native katipo is much more painful and serious than the false katipo. Steatoda capensis is commonly found in dark, dry places such as under firewood, where it will prey on other invertebrates. Males are much smaller than females and often have small white dots along the abdomen, and sometimes a red stripe on their rear. Egg sacs are white cotton wool-like balls about 1cm in diameter.

Delicious berries If you want to grow berries, but aren’t sure which ones or how, Hannah Zwartz has a place to start THERE ARE many things to love about growing berries. They’re compact plants, squeezing against fences, into large tubs or otherwise unused corners. Many tolerate part-shade, which is useful on an urban section, and makes them great companion plants forming the understorey or canopy of a ‘food forest’. Unlike fruit trees, they crop within the first year of planting, and of course, they taste all the more delicious when freshly picked. ‘FEET IN THE SHADE, HEADS IN THE SUN’ Many berries are found naturally in deciduous woodlands, lifting themselves into sunlight to flower and fruit, but spreading their roots in deep, damp leaf litter. They need sun to fruit well, but they dislike dry, baking heat, preferring a coolish root run that never totally dries out. Too much humidity or waterlogging are not good either.

t o g u o y e Hav o t s g n i l d see ? t u o t n a pl If you have been raising seeds, it will soon be time to plant the seedlings out into the garden or raised bed that you have prepared. Firstly we need to do something called “hardening off”. This process is used to slowly introduce your seedlings that have been growing inside, to the outside elements. It helps them to cope better with the change of direct sunlight, ranging temperatures, and wind. At this time of the season, about 3 to 5 days outside in a sunny spot is enough to harden-off plants before transplanting. The sunlight will strengthen the stems and cell walls, which will reduce transplant shock. The plants are then best transplanted in the cooler evenings, and then treated to a good watering afterwards. This process will be great for the seedlings such as corn, zucchini, pumpkin, cucumber, tomatoes, and lettuces.

What is transplant shock? Transplant shock is a term that is used to describe the stresses that can occur on plants that are being transplanted. It includes failure of the plant to root well in the ground, meaning that its chances of survival are reduced. Here are some tips to help reduce stress: 9 Try not to disturb the roots 9 Bring as much of the root ball as you can 9 Water thoroughly after 9 Always make sure the root ball stays moist

Ideal conditions for most berries would be free-draining soil with plenty of compost and leaf mould, deeply mulched with rotting woodchip. WHERE CAN BERRIES GROW? The ultimate garden accessory must be a walk-in netting-covered cage (birds love ripe berries almost as much as children do). Failing that, those with smaller gardens can use a fence or wall to support berry canes, with netting attached to drop down and cover ripening fruit. There’s a berry to suit most niches – even the smallest garden has room for a tub or barrel with strawberries, raspberries or boysenberry canes. STRAWBERRIES A bowl of fresh-picked strawberries for summer breakfasts is an achievable luxury; as well as being delicious these berries are rich in vitamins and iron. Ancestral strawberries were woodland plants, fruiting early, before the leaf canopy closed over

for summer. Modern strawberries are bred for later fruiting, and need lots of sun to fruit well, but still hate to dry out. For a longer season, plant more than one variety. Prepare a bed with plenty of compost; planting along a ridge above a ditch makes for easy watering. A nice deep mulch of pine needles is said to improve the flavour while also deterring snails. Strawberries also do well in large pots, which can be moved into the garden’s sunniest spots as berries are ripening. Plants might be short-lived, producing their best crops for just a few years, but you can keep propagating runners for an ongoing supply of new plants. Peg the first runner into a pot, to be cut off and replanted once roots have grown. (Those further down the line will never crop as well.) Replanting these runners every winter or spring, while digging out the oldest plants, keeps the bed producing well. Experts recommend six to seven plants per person. •Turn to page 29

It can handle more shade and makes a great ground cover under fruit trees or roses, or scrambling along the edges of paths. This is one type of strawberry that propagates itself from seed, but being shallow-rooted it’s easily removed if it starts infringing on other territories. RASPBERRIES Raspberries spread by suckering and once planted are difficult to dig out. A good position could be against an eastfacing wall that gets morning sun, planted at the feet of deciduous trees such as apples, or as part of a hedgerow with other shrubs and berries. They can happily coexist with annual companions such as borage and calendula. Remove perennial weeds like buttercup or couch before planting, as you won’t be able to do so once the raspberries’ roots have developed. Thick mulching protects the root zone and helps keep weeds away. About two canes per person is recommended; plant them about 80cm apart. You can plant closer

Most varieties also do best with a different sort nearby to crosspollinate them. Try to keep the soil moist but not soggy. If you are gardening on sand or clay, the best bet may be to grow blueberry plants in a large tub or barrel filled with compostrich, acid soil and well mulched with woodchip to keep the shallow roots from drying out. BOYSENBERRY Walter Knott named the boysenberry after Rudolph Boysen. Exactly how Rudolf Boysen came across the boysenberry remains a mystery, but it is said to have been cultivated by cross-pollinating the flowers of three other berries: raspberry, loganberry and blackberry. Propagate boysenberries by cuttings, or by layering. The fruit doesn’t have a long shelf life, but it’s not difficult to ensure they are consumed quickly.

Make the most of garden tours

Undeniably the best way to identify suitable plants for growing in the Selwyn area is to look at other gardens with this season’s garden tours offering opportunity to view some stunning gardens.
