By Georgia O’Connor-Harding DRIVERS OVER 60 are involved in the highest number of road crash deaths in Selwyn. Statistics between 2012 and 2016 show people over that age were involved in 19 deaths on Selwyn roads. Over 60s were also involved in 139 injury crashes with 56 people receiving serious injuries. Forty of the crashes involved drivers over 75 resulting in five fatalities and 19 serious injuries. Police are now looking at a strategy for older drivers to look at where police can intervene to stop older people from driving dangerously. Senior Sergeant Kelly Larsen said the number of deaths involving mature drivers are high. “What I am seeing more and more of is complaints coming through about older drivers. Phone calls from a general practitioner or family members saying: “Mum and dad have been medically forbidden to drive,” she said. She said it is about discussing with mature drivers there are options without driving a car. •Turn to page 5
