By Noah Graham THE controversial Sumner skate ramp will be locked up and out of use from Friday after it failed city council sound level tests last week.

Sound level readings were conducted on the half pipe last week which showed the Wakefield Ave facility did not comply with the city plan noise standards during the day or night.

Following the failed noise tests, the council is reviewing the legality of the site and have ordered it to be closed and moved by Friday if noise levels cannot be reduced.

However, Sumner Green and Skate Group member Kimberley Mossman said the skate ramp would be locked for good tomorrow night after the community have given it a “last hurrah,” which everyone is welcome to attend.

She said rather than spending the money now to work with the council and soundproof the skate ramp, they would instead close the park, relocate it and work on it at the new site.

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK THE ONGOING Sumner skate ramp saga takes another twist this week and we have coverage on page 1.

There’s polarised views on this issue – many people want it to stay in its current location, and of course there are others who operate businesses nearby who don’t.

Two weeks ago we had a stack of responses on our Rise Up Christchurch Facebook page to our coverage. And there was a resounding message: Leave the skate ramp where it is.

But the city council has now done a sound test and the powers that be have found it doesn’t comply with noise standards.

The people behind the skate ramp have now decided to move on so from Friday it will be gone.

Let’s hope they can find another spot in the area fairly quickly.

Solution sought for problem intersection

The first of two drop-in sessions was held at the Mt Pleasant Memorial Centre last week for residents to discuss their preference on the three options available for the St Andrews Hill, Bridle Path, and Main Rds intersection.

The second option, to install traffic signals on St Andrews Hill Rd and pre-signals on Bridle Path Rd, is the community favourite.

McCullough attended the start of the session and said there was a constant flow of residents while he was there.

“There was at least 20 people in the room at all times,” Mr McCullough said.

The drop-in consultation session was a success and option two – to install traffic signals on St Andrews Hill Rd and presignals on Bridle Path Rd – is the obvious choice and would suit all residents, he said.

City council engagement manager Katy McRae said the first drop-in session went well with about 50 people turning up.

“People appreciated the opportunity to meet with the project team to discuss the project.”

Mr McCullough is not the only resident who prefers option two.

Heathcote Valley Association administrator Jackie Foulkes said the third option to improve the intersection would stop motorists turning right onto Main Rd from St Andrews Hill and Bridle Path Rd. The concerned Heathcote Valley resident said the city council’s proposed third option may work for other residents in the area but it will not work well

WATER PROTECTION The city council is ensuring Christchurch’s unchlorinated drinking water supply is protected by spraying a protective membrane on its storage reservoirs to stop bird faeces seeping into the supply when it rains.

The city council has 11 to do including two in Lyttelton and one in Diamond Harbour.

LIBRARY TO REOPEN THe Lyttelton Library and Customer Services building will reopen on the corner of London and Canterbury Sts on March 13. In preparation for the opening of the newlyrefurbished building, the temporary Lyttelton Library in the Lyttelton Recreation Centre will close at 1pm on February 25.

There will be no library services available for the two weeks while books, equipment and furniture are moved from the temporary library to the refurbished library.

Our People Induction as parish vicar more like Canadian-born Thomas Brauer is the new vicar for the Anglican Parish of Sumner/Redcliffs and travelled from Scotland to be inducted into the community and church last week. Noah Graham spoke to him about how he has found New Zealand so far and what he hopes to bring to the community

WELCOME: Thomas Brauer at his induction as the new vicar for the Anglican Parish of Sumner/Redcliffs.

Before you moved to Christchurch, what was your role?

Before coming to New Zealand we were in Scotland and I was the diocese and missioner for the Diocese of St Andrews in the Scottish episcopal church.

And what would you do there?

It was an executive role and my job was to help the older churches of the diocese to understand better how to communicate with the culture around them and how to be a part of society in a way that was meaningful both to the church and to the local community. I helped the diocese to develop training programmes for clergy, I helped them to engage young people and I helped them to grow in their understanding of how to live out their life in a Christian world.

You’re Canadian, could you tell me a bit about where you grew up and what it was like?

Well, I grew up on the north shore of the Great Lakes in Ontario. It’s a beautiful rural community, massive land. Just

enormous. There’s a well-known Canadian group – Canadian equivalent of Flight of the Concords – their song about where I grew up contains three words: Trees and rocks. Trees and rocks, and rocks and trees and trees and rocks. I grew up with a lot of trees and rocks and a lot of lake. In some ways, lots of rolling hills and maple trees.

It was stunningly beautiful and a wonderful place to grow up but very rural.

You’re living in Redcliffs, what do you think of it?

It’s been wonderful. I have to say the people of this area are exceedingly welcoming and they’ve just been so helpful and supportive. We don’t own anything at this stage. We don’t have furniture or even a car.

People have been lending us things and making sure we’re okay and telling us where the places are to find what we need to rebuild our home here. It’s been really wonderful. Our children have been loving the garden and we’ve all been enjoying the

It does sound very special.

You mentioned your family, would you mind giving me a bit of background on them?

My wife Cheryl and I have two kids. Our boy will be seven years old next week and our girl will be three in March. Really enjoying getting into school and being part of the community.

And what about your wife?

Her background is in film and television production. So she’s had a variety of experiences from doing special effects and pyro-technics, up to production co-ordination for a couple of big blockbuster films. She’s pretty awesome.

She’s not standing right next to you is she?

No, she’s not. I actually say that in public when she’s not around.

In fact, I usually get into trouble when I brag about her when she’s around.

a reunion Getting back to your role in the community. What do you expect to happen in the next month or so and what are your great plans?

It’s about learning right now.

The next month is entirely about learning, understanding how life works in New Zealand. What the community is like in Redcliffs and Sumner. Learning who the people are and what is happening in their lives and how we can support both the parishioners of Redcliffs and Sumner but also the brother community. The big plans are, I would say just continuing to build what has already happened here which in particular in the Sumner area we’ve had wonderful relationships with the community and with young people in particular. So continuing to build that and seeking ways in which we as a church can be of service to the community. How can we give, how can we support and how can we help.

I understand you had your induction last week, how was that?

It was brilliant, it was wonderful. Bishop Victoria (Matthews) who is our bishop here in Christchurch was my bishop in Canada. So she ordained me in Canada. It was a reunion for us to come back. Even though this is

Skate ramp out of use the first time I have been in New Zealand this is the third church she has put me in. So that was really nice to be able to connect with her that way. It was wonderful to for the first time to be able to pray and be in worship with the people here. A wonderful variety from the community were present to welcome us and show their support.

It certainly makes it a lot easier when the community welcome you with open arms.

Yes, it really helps. So far it has been a really easy transition.

Mrs Mossman hopes to have the ramp relocated as soon as possible, at the preferred 26 Nayland St site.

Sumner will be without the ramp indefinitely, but hopes they can sort a new site out with the council as soon as possible, she said.

She said the new site would ideally have an area to place

the skate ramp but to also have space where a picnic table and trees can be placed so all family members can enjoy, not just skaters.

Mrs Mossman wanted to make clear the skate park was closing down because it had not complied with council noise level readings, not because of the main complainant.

Sumner Re Treat owner Chris Gage-Smart said it was good to hear her business could continue as usual now the skate park will be closed down.

Mrs Gage-Smart said herself and her husband are “more than happy” to help the group when the new site is secured.

Heathcote Ward councillor Sara Templeton said she had met with the group and the council will continue to work with the group to find a permanent place for the skate ramp.

“They’re a fantastic group of local volunteers who have put a huge amount of work into the ramp for the youth of Sumner and really want to do the right thing for the community.” go iN The draw To

By Gordon Findlater AT THIS time of the year former Super Rugby player Ged Robinson is normally getting towards peak fitness ahead of a busy season.

This year he’s all about keeping Christchurch well fed with what he calls a Kiwi take on Italian style pizza.

The former Crusader, whose mobile wood fire pizza oven is regularly based outside Il Magro espresso bar in Papanui, will be awaiting runners at the finish area of next month’s event.

Outside of rugby Robinson has always had a love for food. After recently hanging up the boots he’s now had more time to concentrate on that love.

“I’m a front rower so I love food.

I moved to Melbourne and played over there for three years. My wife

and I spent a lot of time checking out the city and enjoying the food, that probably fired up the taste buds even more,” said Robinson.

His first experiments with pizza came during his time while playing for the Melbourne Rebels, regularly feeding teammates on his own creations. His passion for fuelling a squad has grown ever since.

After spending a decade as a professional rugby player Robinson knows all about nutrition, something he’s taken to the oven.

“Italian style pizza has really high

quality meat and really low in sugar and salt. I do make brown flour pizza dough as well as the traditional white. It’s all really good quality, non-processed food,” said Robinson.

Robinson is continually working on new creations and by the time March 19 rolls around he may just have a new recipe to unveil.

Your Local Views School site concern LinwoodCentralHeathcote Community Board member Darrell Latham writes about the relocation of Redcliffs School My years in education as a school teacher and university academic has not diminished my belief that the school is the heart of the community. The return of Redcliffs School to the Redcliffs community is something that took huge community effort to achieve and a homecoming that we all look forward to.

It came with a caveat from Education Minister, Hekia Parata that the school would be relocated to Redcliffs Park.

Everyone I know supports and celebrates the decision that Redcliffs School is homeward bound. It will mean stability and certainty for the children, teachers, parents and the wider community. New families will move into the area and businesses viability will improve.

However, many also acknowledge that Education Minister Hekia Parata served the community with ‘another dose of difficulty’ by relocating the school to Redcliffs Park.

My preference is for the existing Main Rd site. For me it is a case of loyal opposition. Let me briefly explain what I mean. I am completely loyal to, and fully support, the return of Redcliffs School to the community. Nonetheless, I am concerned as to the preferred site for the school as it has its own ‘geographical challenges that mean it is far from perfect.’

Residents are taking the oppor-

tunity to contact their councillors and community board members to have their voices heard. Democracy in action. There will be further community consultation to come and it is very important that all voices are heard.

The next step is for the Ministry of Education to go through the land acquisition process with the council and for consulting engineers to carry out a detailed analysis of Redcliffs Park.

Redcliffs School will return to the Redcliffs community!

However, as numerous commentators have stated: ‘Is Redcliffs Park really the best option for the future as Parata says. Or, is this the final fling of a Minister who wants to have the last word?

That is certainly the way some Redcliffs residents see it.’

By Noah Graham DOLPHINS HAD some company on Sunday as the Te Waka Pounamu Waka Ama Club paddled from Naval Point to Okains Bay. Thirteen people hopped into Matariki – their Waka Ama – and made their way around Banks Peninsula to commemorate Waitangi Day. Te Waka Pounamu Waka Ama Club coach Jack Wormald said the 40km and four-hour trip was “fantastic” and included dolphins, seals and perfect weather.

He said on the trip the paddlers jumped out and swam with the dolphins who “escorted” them to Okains Bay. Mr Wormald said the trip

also served as a way to prepare for another later in the year when they will paddle from Lyttelton to Akaroa, a journey which he expects will take about eight hours.

“There’s no date for Akaroa as yet, hopefully by the end of the year – a bit more logistical planning needed to ensure a safe and successful trip,” he said.

The waka ama seats six people and the group rotated between two teams of six throughout the trip every 45 minutes.

Mr Wormald said they were helped by a safety boat provided by the Naval Point Club, and a special thanks needed to go out to them.

“It was sensational.”

On a positive note, this may mean that boaties are checking the weather and making the right decision by not going out when it looks dodgy. It’s certainly not worth putting yourself or your passengers at risk.

When the weather is a bit average, I would like you all to further that good boating practice by having a look at Environment Canterbury’s new Navigation Safety Bylaw 2016.

I have provided bits of information via this column in the past, but I thought it would be a good time to give you guys another reminder of some of the major changes that affect you.

Here are two major changes to the bylaw which affect you directly: You and your crew must wear life jackets. On any vessel six metres or less, you are required to wear life jackets.

This includes paddle boards and kayaks. There is an exemption if

the paddle boarder is using the paddle board for surfing and has a leg strap attached. If your vessel is towed on a trailer and has an outboard/inboard motor, you must have identification. In most cases, this will be the registration number of your trailer put on either side of the vessel. It has to be at least 90mm high above the waterline visible by the naked eye from 50m.

Non-powered vessels less than six metres in length require the current owner’s name and contact details somewhere on the vessel. There are some exemptions, including belonging to an approved boating organisation that has an identification system approved by the harbour master’s office.

Green MP Eugenie Sage talks about the effect of toxic blooms on our waterways

I was looking forward to an evening swim at Camp Bay recently but was put off by the vivid green colour of the water.

Looking out from Camp Bay Rd, I was disturbed to see large areas of the Lyttelton Harbour stained with phytoplankton blooms.

On a flight to Wellington I saw similar extensive blooms off the Brighton and Sumner coast.

From the air, the blooms look dark green. Up close, they turn the sea a lurid green because of the way these tiny plants reflect sunlight.

Phytoplankton are the basis of the marine food chain but a NIWA ecologist described these huge blooms as “out of the ordinary.” Increased nutrient levels, warm sunny days and long hours of sunshine have created ideal conditions for these tiny plants to multiply.

Environment Canterbury suggests that the phytoplankton

blooms may be caused by heavy north-west rain storms flushing nutrients from the land into streams and rivers, such as the Waimakariri, and from there out to the sea.

In our gardens and on farm pasture, nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus help plants thrive. Too many nutrients cause problems for our rivers and lakes with excessive algal growths.

Health warnings against any contact with black mats of toxic cyanobacteria algae, in at least seven Canterbury rivers and three of our lakes, make these waterways off limits for swimming.

Is this year’s huge phytoplankton bloom a sign that Canterbury’s coastal waters are now suffering from a similar nutrient overload to our rivers? Are the blooms more extensive because of the nutrients we’re dumping in the

sea from intensive agriculture and Canterbury’s one million dairy cows, and from discharges such as the ocean outfall for Christchurch’s wastewater?

There is also a current public health warning against eating mussels, kina, scallops and other shellfish from the Canterbury coast between Gore Bay and the Hakatere/Ashburton River because of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning. Shellfish are filter feeders. If people eat shellfish which have ingested toxic algae, they risk vomiting, nausea, and abdominal cramps.

This summer’s health warnings show that we need to take much better care of rivers and our oceans by changing the way we use land. New Zealanders want to be able to go swimming, fishing and gathering kai without worrying if it will make them sick.

Heathcote falls in T20 semi-final

A spirited final two rounds of the competition saw Heathcote sneak into the semi-final against East Christchurch Shirley on Thursday. However, that’s as far as they went. Heathcote bowled first at Burwood Park, with Pugh’s haul helping to restrict East Christchurch Shirley to 150/7 from 20 overs. Heathcote’s batsmen, who had amassed 388 runs in their previous two innings, struggled at the crease in the knockout match, with East Christchurch Shirley’s total never looking in danger. Heathcote were all out for 108 in the 19th over. Monday’s final was taken out by St Albans after they defeated East Christchurch Shirley by 16 runs.

WAKE UP CALL: The athletes plunged into action at 8.30am

Athletes battled the heat in Corsair Bay COMPETITORS battled with temperatures in excess of 30 deg C in Sunday’s Corsair Bay Classic Triathlon.

More than 100 athletes, ranging from seven through to 70-yearsold, took part in the event which began with an 8.30am swim.

The event hosted three categories. The children’s aquathon, which was contested between seven to 10-year-olds and consisted of a short swim and run. The short course triathlon/duathlon, which included a 500m swim or 1.7km run, a 13km cycle to the bottom of Dyers Pass Rd and

back, and a 3.3km run. And the Olympic distance triathlon/duathlon, which featured a 1500m swim in Corsair Bay or 5km run, 40km bike to Orton Bradley Park and back, and a 10km run.

Many of Canterbury’s top triathletes used the event as a final test before next weekend’s Challenge Wanaka Triathlon Festival.

Thomas Newsom was first home in the boys’ aquathon with Charlotte Chiles first in the girls.

A pair of teenagers were first home in the short course triathlon. Reece Rush won the male event in a time of 49m 35s. The

first female home was Rosa Blake in 56m 1.9s. The men’s short course duathlon was won by Alasdair Hood (49m 56.3s) and Amber Lawson (58m 36s) won the women’s race.

The Olympic distance triathlon titles went to Tyrone Hellyer, who won the men’s in a time of 2h 14m 20.2s and Fiona Crombie in 2h 24m 12.5s. The Olympic distance duathlon titles went to husband and wife combo David and Katherine Fitch. David won the men’s event in a time of 2h 22m 39.3s and Katherine the women’s in 2h 53m 43.7s.

Kerrison on making music and Speaking with Christine de Felice ahead of next month’s Selwyn Sounds music festival, singer-songwriter Jason Kerrison discusses his career, music, beliefs and planetarian ventures You have been at the forefront of the New Zealand music scene for quite a few years now. What have been the highlights of your career so far?

The biggest achievement for me by far is Band Together for Canterbury. Our response to the earthquakes felt like a good idea at the time, but it wasn’t until we had what was later reported as 160,000-odd people at Hagley Park that we realised the scale of what we had been a part of. Giving people that reprieve for even just a day of music was mint. I felt huge pride in the team.

What do you regard as your greatest achievement in music?

Getting the opportunity to work on very diverse projects – from being in rock bands like Opshop and Fungi and hybrid Hip Pop pyjama-wearing group The Babysitters Circus to playing a dual role in the musical Grease earlier this year and being invited to play the drums for a band at the Dubai Sevens. Living the dream.

The music you create is somewhat diverse, so what kind of

composer/musician do you see yourself as?

Recently I’ve tried to explore different forms in my #JKEP series, from the sacred geometry of the Golden Mean to the tuning and the universal harmonic of 432Hz instead of the typical 440Hz – just for fun experimentation. So pop experimentation at the moment I guess. I also have a publishing company called Antipodes Music Publishing and Sync (AMPS) that produces and curates music for a number of projects. So it’s very diverse in terms of activities, whether you’re writing for yourself or to brief. You get to traverse a few spaces both commercially and creatively.

Being part of a band or a solo performer – do you have a preference and if so, why?

No, I feel rapt to do all of it to be honest. I’m definitely looking forward to smashing it out with the Fungi, though. It has been way too long since we played. Almost two decades now … jeez.

Your EP #JKEP2 was an experimental work. What

prompted you to produce this rather than a more conventional EP showcasing your music?

I felt with Opshop I had cornered myself into commercial ballad guy-ville and that was never the intention. I needed a change of approach purely as an artist to stretch myself.

I came up with the idea of producing 10 EPs over time, exploring different processes in each. #JKEP1 was largely poppy acoustic electronic stuff. #JKEP2 was exploring sacred geometry and its effects in music,

and #JKEP3 will be around developing songs from briefs initially used for commercial clients.

How do you see your future in music?

I see myself as a working musician. Whether that manifests as a soloist, a cast member of Grease, or a music producer for the sevens. I went from touring for the new Fungi album, which has been sitting in the top 10 Italian rock charts for the last few months, and writing/ composing for commercial

clients to producing music for Toyota’s Global Street Band of buskers, playing drums for a band in Dubai, being the music director for the New Zealand Marley All-stars Tribute and debuting a music festival, Selwyn Sounds, in March with a stellar line-up. I’m thrilled and bloody lucky I get to do any of these, so I’ll just keep saying yes and getting amongst it I guess. I do want to start an eco-conscious music festival on my farm in about three years, so that’s in the mix too.

preparing for the end of time New Zealand has produced some stellar musicians, both composers and performers, over the last five decades or so.

Do you see that legacy continuing through today’s up-andcoming musicians and are there any that stand out?

Well, I’m in my own rabbit hole so much that I don’t get exposed to nearly enough new music. But I love Joel Shadbolt at the moment. That dude’s playing and singing. Far out, one to watch for sure. I worked with him as MD on the Bob Marley tribute show and he just killed it. Genius. In fact, that whole production was insanely good and cool to work with. Bob’s the man.

What advice would you give to young people with musical ambitions?

Primarily enjoy yourself and savour the fact that you get to do it. In terms of making a life of it? I often say it’s good to get a handle on what your success metrics are from the beginning.

Is success joining a tribute band and playing once a month for well-paying corporates? Is it touring the world playing metal festivals? Is it writing commercials? Is it a combo of many things? Dream it up and get a handle of its manifestation early.

I basically think that if I can help, I should. That’s pretty much it.

You describe yourself as a “planetarian.” What do you mean by that and how does it manifest in your day-to-day life?

I feel the most important thing we have is our planet. In terms of day-to-day life, I’m developing a permaculture biotecture-based retreat in the far north. We’re

trying to use as much recycled and retooled stuff as we can. For example, the Earthship we’re currently working on has earthrammed tyres as basic building blocks. Eventually, we’d like to run workshops on the principles of resilient homes and communities along with other more esoteric interests of the retreat.

So, I’m still learning a lot about it and relishing the chance to do it.

My art covers a broad range of mediums, including sculpture, printmaking, mixed media, and furniture and I typically create one off pieces. I’m passionate about sustainability, so where possible I use reclaimed materials. I believe salvaged materials have an inherent beauty that should be showcased.

I am drawn to texture and contrast, and my process consists of straightening and perfecting, then pushing the paint in a freer, less controlled manner. I find both approaches necessar y, working in multiple layers with each.

We found a property that suited those caveats. We went through many different phases of design, but ultimately decided we’d like to try different designs around the ecovillage over time.

We’ve settled on a Michael Reynolds-inspired Earthship hut design for the first whare and it’s an optimistic 70 per cent there. The release of the Opshop album Until The End of Time in 2010 was a good opportunity for me to chat about preparedness around concerns I had for people being ready in the event of a catastrophe, predicted or not. My personal consideration around the literature of the predictions and culture of the end times of 2012 got me invested into exploring it further and writing about it in songs. I’m what you might call an apocaloptimist, so I felt in terms of the media reporting what I was up to there was a misrepresentation to the degree that certain elements of my account were seized upon, sensationalised and tainted with whack journalism. Regardless,

I’m still of the opinion that ancient cultures have left clues for us about large cosmic cycles and their effects. And that right now our solar system is undergoing interplanetary climate change.

And climate change isn’t an earthcentric thing; cataclysmic and abrupt climate change is occurring throughout the solar system. So change is upon us. I just wanted, and still want, people to be mindful of their preparedness, and I felt talking about that, the ark, within the context of the record would be a good conversation starter. That seemed to be the case ultimately regardless of whether I was literally putting a boat up on a mountain, which, by the way, I plan to do one day!

Chill out in the thermal springs

By Mike Yardley STEEPED IN Roman heritage and swooned over as Britain’s premier spa destination, Bath’s architectural flourishes can’t fail to impress.

Boasting Britain’s only natural thermal springs, immerse yourself in the warm, mineral-rich waters, just as the Celts and Romans did, over 2000 years ago. The Thermae Spa is where to head for the ultimate immersion experience.

I always enjoy taking a sizzling soak after admiring the World Heritage-listed Roman Baths, a stirring monument of engineering prowess where natural hot water still flows through this extraordinary temple and its cavernous labyrinth of bathing rooms.

Lording over the thermal baths is Bath Abbey, the last of the great English medieval churches which was built in 1499. Following dissolution in 1539, the abbey was sold into private ownership, before being returned to the city’s purview in 1572. But it’s the Georgian architecture that looms large as Bath’s calling card; a living, breathing museum of graciously curved buildings, principally designed by masterly town planners, Ralph Allen and

the two John Woods’ – the elder and the younger.

Throughout the 1700s, the streets of Bath were flanked in the fashionable Palladian style and Georgian-style townhouses. Size up the splendour of John Wood’s Queen Square, the gold-standard of Palladian design, built to provide visitors to the city the same sense of grandeur that they were accustomed to in their country

estates.

The Circus and the Royal Crescent are both masterpiece triumphs of urban living, with the artful curvature of these multistorey stone buildings. And the grand stone Pulteney Bridge is the only historic bridge, apart from Florence’s Ponte Vecchio, that was built with shops incorporated into it. Take a boat ride on the River Avon to intimately size up the

sheer splendour of the bridge.

Catering to the social needs of the ever growing city, John Wood the younger built Bath’s Assembly Rooms in 1769. This gracious complex comprising the Ball Room, Tea Room, Card Room and Octagon were the nerve-centre of 18th century society life.

A wondrous collection of contemporary and period dress is showcased on-site, in the Fashion

Museum, which rekindles a sense of the high-life and formal balls that the Assembly Rooms bore witness to.

Fashion Gift for illustrating the latest trends Instagram is a treasure-trove of undiscovered talent. Amy Parsons-King talked to Christchurch-based fashion illustrator Renuka Malik, of @nukaillustrations, about her love of fashion, technology and design What’s your name and how old are you?

My name is Renuka-Maria Malik and I am 23-years-old. I was born in Germany and lived there for the first six years of my life, I then moved to India for two years before residing in Christchurch, New Zealand. (My mother is German and my father is Indian. I also speak fluent German).

Did you study? If so what?

I studied fashion, technology and design straight out of high school, as I’ve wanted to be part of the fashion industry for as long as I can remember.

How do you spend your days at the moment?

I currently work full-time at Plume, surrounded by my favourite New Zealand and international labels. As well as

illustrating, another huge passion of mine is make-up artistry.

I think I enjoy make-up as much as illustrating because, to me, it’s like drawing but on a face. I love anything art-based!

How’d you get into fashion illustration?

Mum loves to tell the story of how she had to confiscate all pens off me as a toddler,

because as soon as I could hold a pen, I used to draw on anything and everything. She then replaced it with a pencil and numerous books with empty pages, which didn’t take me long to fill (apparently). As a tween, I insisted my mother buy me Vogue magazines, she finally agreed as long as I sketched what I saw inside the magazine. I had

no qualms. This furthered my love for fashion illustrating.

Why’d you decide to start?

As I mentioned, I’ve always drawn a lot, especially bodies, faces and clothes. I draw digitally on my iPad with a stylus and have developed an individual style. A wee while ago, a friend suggested I post a couple of my illustrations on Instagram. I’ve had a really good response so far!

Are you a self-taught illustrator?

Yes! I went to an alternative learning school (Rudolf Steiner) and we were encouraged to paint and draw from a very young age.

Do you want a career as a fashion illustrator? If so, how does it work, like are you commissioned by designers to sketch their collections?

Ideally, I would love to work as a freelance illustrator and do various jobs for fashion/music magazines, as well as designers and photographers, or anyone to be honest! I love seeing drawing incorporated into photo shoots e.g the latest MissFQ cover is super-cute!

Where do you get inspiration for your drawings from?

illustrations on my page are all of runway/campaign looks that I personally like. I source the majority of my research from Style.com (now Vogue.com).

I love looking through the latest shows and I find a lot of new designers that way too!

Do you think there’s a market for fashion illustrating?

I think there is a market for it as not everyone has the gift of drawing. I once believed that everyone is born with it but turns out that’s not true and, surprisingly, people do come to you because of the skill set you have. I would love to work with anyone in the fashion industry.

There are some pretty incredible fashion illustrators around, is there anyone who particularly inspires your work?

There are so many amazing fashion illustrators that are very talented and I love viewing other people’s work. I would say that the person who originally inspired me the most is the fabulous and French Garance Doré, I used to, and still do, think her little sketches are so adorable. Linear, chic and simple.

Strengthen your spine, avoid back pain Whether it’s from gardening, lifting something heavy, or twisting awkwardly, most of us will experience low back pain during our lifetime and it can certainly slow us down.

An exciting and effective way of resolving and preventing low back or neck pain is Dynamic Spines, a programme run

by Muscle People in Christchurch City and Bishopdale. As physiotherapist and director of Muscle People, Laurie Moore, explains: “Spinal strength and stability is the focus of the programme, concentrating on the deep core muscles in the trunk.”

The programme is designed to move you beyond pain to a place where you feel confident about taking part in dynamic activities, and significantly reduce recurrence of back pain, she says.

Led by physiotherapists, the weekly exercise programme is conducted for small groups, with core stability and spinal muscle control being addressed.

Participants experience clear progression each week, which will cross over to their everyday life.

“More than 80 per cent of New Zealanders suffer from a significant episode of low back pain during their life,” Laurie says.

“Of these, 84 per cent are likely to have a recurrence of back pain within a year.

Research shows that those that undergo a specific spinal strengthening programme are almost three times better off.”
