Rise Up Christchurch – let’s get behind the Pike River families Facebook campaign where you can make a difference
THE STAR is urging Cantabrians to get behind the families of the Pike River victims and convince Solid Energy and the Government not to seal the mine. The Star wants as many people as possible to post their opinion on our Facebook page, Rise Up Christchurch, which we will send to new Prime Minister Bill English and to stateowned company Solid Energy. Said editor in chief Barry Clarke: “West Coasters came to our aid and support in the weeks after the February 22, 2011, earthquake. “It’s time for us now to step up and help them in their time of need. And they don’t just have to be Cantabrians who want to show their support. “Sealing that mine would be a travesty. Experts say there are ways to lower the methane levels that would then make it safe to enter.

“Those families need to recover their sons, brothers, husbands and fathers. And we all owe those 29 who perished the right to be reunited with their families.” A Royal Commission of Inquiry into the November 2010 disaster was scathing of safety at the mine. The commission’s report told a grim story of how a number of organisations, including both the mine company and the former Department of Labour, failed to keep workers in the Pike River mine safe. Hours after the mine blew, then Prime Minister John Key called it a national disaster. It would be a national travesty if the mine was sealed before every attempt to re-enter it has been exhausted.
