Disgust over cattle grazing at Coes Ford By Tom Doudney COWS GRAZING up to 10m from the Selwyn/Waikirikiri River on public recreation land at Coes Ford were quickly moved on by the district council the day after a Selwyn Huts resident posted photos on Facebook. Steve Curtis was disappointed to spot about 30 to 40 cows in the reserve while driving past. The reserve had been leased for grazing by the district council.

Mr Curtis took photos which he posted to both the district council and Environment Canterbury Facebook pages. He said while the cows weren’t in the river, the fence between them and the water was only 10m away from it. “With that amount of cattle in there and all their crap so close to the river, it wouldn’t matter if they were standing in the river or not, it’s going to seep in there,” he said. •Turn to page 5

THE BRIGHT SIDE: Election results may have cut short her mayoralty ambitions and brought the curtain down on nine years at the district council table but former deputy mayor Sarah Walters isn’t one to be bitter. Reporter Tom Doudney caught up with Mrs Walters to find out what might be next for her and get her views on the challenges new mayor Sam Broughton will face. •Read more on pages 8 and 9.
