Friends on and off the track (From left to right) – Zoe Crisp, Lulu Inglis and Milly Eastgate returned to school after the holidays and got straight into athletics day. The Elmwood Normal pupils ran, jumped high and long, threw the shot put and got involved in other activities last week. The pupils were excited they could compete in front of the many parents and grandparents who turned up to enjoy the day.
Bid to open liquor store opposed „„ By Andrew King FEARS A proposed liquor store in Harewood could encourage an increase of people drinking in public parks has community leaders and residents rallying to stop it. The proposed liquor store would be built on the corner of Harewood Rd and Trafford St but resident Aaron Bree said it will bring more problems than it is worth. “We have a number of parks near it, it is right in the heart
of a residential area and there are schools all around it. I have spoken to some in the neighbourhood and we don’t want it, he said. There are four schools within 2km and seven parks within a 1.5km radius. Nunweek Park, 500m from the proposed site, is a known hangout for people drinking and Mr Bree fears that will only get worse with another outlet. He said if it had been there when he was looking to buy his house he would have looked else-
where, so he is starting a petition to block the licence from being granted. The off-licence that has been applied for would be for 2a Trafford St to sell alcohol between the hours of 7am-10pm, Monday to Sunday. Police said a decision on whether they will oppose it will be made next week. Aaron Keown, who was recently elected as a city councillor in the Harewood Ward, said the area is already “well serviced when it comes to alcohol stores.
“We should be giving the power of a veto to the residents and the community boards to stop these stores going into areas that clearly don’t need them, he said. He said giving the boards “some teeth could be written into the Local Alcohol Plan. Breens Intermediate principal Nikki Clarke said she was surprised to hear about a proposal for a liquor licence in the area. “Given there are five licensed premises already within
1km of this address I will be very interested to watch the community response around this proposal, she said. Linda Chen, who was recently elected onto the Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood Community Board, lives close to Nunweek Park and said she was against the idea as soon as she heard it.
