Moa Cave footpath access worries „„ By Annabelle Dick REDCLIFFS RESIDENTS want the Sumner-Lyttelton Corridor project to be reviewed to take pedestrian access into account. There is no footpath on the Moa Cave side of Main Rd, which means pedestrians have to cross a busy road to access the footpath on the north side. Redcliffs residents Jackie Barker and Diane France approached the Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board to raise their concerns about the intersection. “It’s a major safety issue.

There’s elderly people, mothers with prams and kids crossing the road where there’s a huge volume of traffic,” Mrs Barker said. The mother-of-three said many school children travel the route twice a day and crossing the main thoroughfare is the only way to get to class. “Redcliffs School is going to remain open and there’s a lot of kids living in McCormacks Bay that can’t access the school unless they cross the dangerous intersection.” The footpath has been out of action since the February 22,

2011, earthquake rendered it unusable. Rockfall has been a major risk to roads below and high-grade wire mesh was installed last month to mitigate the threat. But community board chairwoman Sara Templeton said even rockfall protection isn’t enough to reintroduce a pathway at Moa Cave. “Geotech staff told us it’s not possible to engineer a solution for the corner which allows pedestrians to safely pass around and underneath the cliff face,” Mrs Templeton said.

Redcliffs Residents’ Association acting chairman Chris Doudney said safety is the number one factor for residents and project designers, but the corridor project needs to be looked at in the wider sense. “The design team should’ve taken all the safety issues into account – the issues of rockfall and pedestrian access. That approach should’ve been taken.” The community board has been pushing for the city council to prioritise pedestrian access in areas that have had remediation work done. Main Rd is one of

those areas. City council city services general manager Dave Adamson said there is an appropriately designed footpath on the other side of the road and the south side walkway won’t be rebuilt. “The protection works are being done to reduce the rockfall risk, but . . . there is still a residual risk that in another seismic event that we may have further rockfall,” Mr Adamson said. Residents are proposing that a covered walkway be built or failing that pedestrian crossings be introduced on Main Rd.

FROM THE EDITOR’S DESK SUMNER SCHOOL pupil Zoe Elmey, 11, is a budding business woman and artist. Her handdrawn cards are being stocked in several stores in the city and she is doing well with her enterprise. Check out her story on page 8. Redcliffs Pharmacy’s friendly owner Daryl Sayer is the subject of ‘Our People’ this week. All these years living in the area and I had no idea that he was the chief fire officer for the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade. He chats to reporter Annabelle Dick on page 10. Finally, Sumner RSA member Allan Adams’ late wife once told him many years ago that he would make 100 years of age – well, she has now been proven correct. He achieved a century on Monday. A very happy birthday to you Allan! Hei kona– Shelley Robinson

Crane operator Europe-bound to compete against world’s best Fashion „„ By Annabelle Dick A DIAMOND Harbour man will head to Germany for the World Crane Championship after taking away the first ever national title. Jamie Coles (below) competed in and won the New Zealand round of the championship where he operated a Hiab crane to manoeuvre through an obstacle course. He is stoked with the accolade which will see him travel to Europe to face the best crane operators in the world. “It was a pretty good feeling to win – there was a bit of competition from all over New Zealand, especially once it got down to the final six.” About 40 people took part in the competition at the Wigram Aerodrome, where a course was set up with a series of obstacles for operators to complete while being timed. Mr Coles is well-versed in the art of crane operating having worked as a crane operator for

forklift, digger operator and fire engine competitions because there’s never really been anything for crane trucks,” he said. “And then I came across the World Crane Championship.” Stark Bros chief executive Andrew Stark said it’s great Mr Coles had the initiative to enter

because he ended up beating the rest of the country with his skill. “We’re very proud of him and his achievement. He has been a valuable and outstanding employee with us for 16 years, driving the full range of our heavy transport equipment, but principally our largest crane trucks,” Mr Stark said. Mr Coles will now spend the next month practicing before heading to Germany in September for the international leg. “It’s just a matter of setting the track up and running it over and over trying to get that time down and smoothing up my movements.” The Diamond Harbour resident plays rugby for the Bay Bullsh...s and dabbles in hunting and fishing. The father-of-three doesn’t get much of that though – instead dedicating most of his time to work and his family – so he plans on bringing his partner along for a holiday. NZ Trucks and Hiab will pay for his travel and accommodation. •Read more about Jamie in The Star tomorrow

EVANS PASS RD REPAIRS Evans Pass Rd above Sumner will be down to one lane from today, due to a retaining wall being rebuilt. Traffic lights have been installed to maintain twoway traffic. SCIRT has advised residents to drive and cycle with caution and be ready to stop for a red light. The work will take until the end of the year to finish. CYCLE WAY NETWORK Work will begin on the Little River and Ferrymead cycle ways as part of the city’s cycle way network development. Construction of the Little River cycle way and the Rapanui/Shag Rock cycle way will begin in the next two months. The city council will add more than 15km to the network over the next year. The city’s 13 cycle ways have been forecast to cost more than $156 million. WATER FRONT CLEAN UP A clean up day at the Sumner Esplanade will be held this Sunday. The working bee, which will be held in conjunction with the city council, aims to clean up the waterfront and prune plants in the area. Residents have been advised to bring gloves, spades and pruning shears. Volunteers will meet at the esplanade on Hardwicke St for a 10am start on Sunday, August 7.

Your Local Views Bay Harbour News asked its readers what they thought safety fences on parts of Main Rd and Wakefield Ave should look like.

News FORWARD THINKING: If you are building a house, you can put up silt fences to block sediment from getting into waterways.

Start preparing now Fashion for major storms

Banks Peninsula Water Zone Committee chairman Steve Lowndes says we need to start preparing for any storms that might come our way

Gardening THERE IS not much that we didn’t already know from the latest climate change projections released by the Ministry for the Environment. What is new, however, is experts are more certain of their predictions. They are certain Canterbury is going to experience more prolonged dry periods, more wind and more intense storms. Banks Peninsula has experienced all of these conditions in recent years, and we need to be prepared. It’s great to see the Little River community looking toward the future and preparing for these weather events. Through the Little River Flood Rating District programme, the community has collectively invested in the clearance of the old willows and debris which have accumulated in the Okana and Okuti rivers. Storms not only flood the area but also release large quantities of sediment into our rivers and harbours. Sediment from the volcanic rocks of the peninsula contains high quantities of phosphorous causing bacteria blooms such as the one that plagued Lake Forsyth/Wairewa

this summer. It also makes it difficult for any fish, cockles, whitebait etc to thrive in our streams and harbours. We haven’t had a major storm this season but no doubt we will. I really encourage you to start preparing now. Some things you can do include: • Cover bare ground. Soil is susceptible to wind and rain which could potentially wash it down into the water. You can help prevent this by planting shrubs or native species to provide some stability to the soil. • If you are building a house, control erosion by putting up silt fences or filter socks which block sediment from getting into rivers and streams • Make sure heavy stock are kept away from waterways. Reducing the amount of sediment getting into our streams and harbours will take a whole lot of small actions by a whole lot of people. But by working together with our friends and neighbours, we can really make a difference. You can phone the city council on 941 8999 and Environment Canterbury on 366 4663 if you see something that needs fixing.

Joanne Parker: Would you be able to explain why a fence is needed? Is this part of the Health and Safety Act 2016? My thoughts were that signs saying hazard area would be sufficient. We have a picket fence (waist height) with a “hazard area” sign between Wiggins and Nayland Sts, where Scarborough Rock is thought to crumble based on the seismic measurements, in the future. I wondered how this area was different to the Main Rd, Moa Bone Point and Shag Rock? In the event of a strong natural disaster a fence would not be of use. Currently the hazard area at the end of Wiggins St is used for walking dogs and as a dog play area, and as a public shortcut access. Otherwise, it appears very empty from humans. I would like to know the exact fence idea rationale, please. It did seem capitalist and excessive to make a fence 2m. Society is not currently living with that type of understanding that the city council has funding for things that are not immediately prioritised for the benefit of disadvantaged or marginalised groups.

Paving in the eastern suburbs for low decile areas is more humanistic behaviour I would expect from a council and immediately equates to sensible “safety” as opposed to “safety fencing”. Judy Stack: I think the fencing should be pool type at 1.2m high. A reader responds to last week’s article regarding littering and dog faeces issues at Lyttelton Recreation Ground. Joanne Dunningham: As a regular visitor to this amazing part of New Zealand, I was shocked to read an article in Bay Harbour News (July 27, 2016) under the heading of Sport ground rubbish problems. This article was relating to the problem of the Lyttelton sports and recreation ground and it constantly being fouled by dogs defecating and weeing all over it.  I was equally shocked to read the comment by Mrs Smith; “There has been a problem on the field for a long time but it’s one of the only flat, open spaces in Lyttelton for dogs”. So this is acceptable for the dogs to do this all over the field because it’s the only flat open space in Lyttelton! The children then go and play sport on it or just play on it?  Am

I missing something? I understand that it is a town with very little grass areas, but the children need to come first before the dogs I would think? How disgusting that the Lyttelton Rugby Club staff have to clean up the field before play can begin for the children. Out walking with my granddaughter in Lyttelton, I have to tell her constantly to watch out for dog poo on the footpaths. On a recent Saturday trip to the Lyttelton Market, I followed a dog on a leash and its owner into a stall only to watch the dog lick every piece of fruit and vegetable (organic) that it could reach until I alerted the owner to what was happening. The owner wasn’t that bothered and I almost felt slightly out of order for mentioning it! I am a dog lover (yes I am) I have a beautiful little fox terrier, and whenever we take her out we have plastic bags with us and we clean up after her. I stop and talk to overseas visitors out walking all the time around Lyttelton and the amazing and special coastline of the peninsula and I feel embarrassed about what they must think when they visit and see dog poo all over the footpaths and walking tracks. Come on you lazy people, pick up after your dogs and have a bit of pride in your community and our country.

River park in red zone beneficial Green MP Eugenie Sage CONGRATULATIONS to Eastern Vision for organising the recent “Joining the Dots” workshop for people to share proposals for the future use of the Avon/Ōtākaro River residential red zone. Government planning for extravagant anchor projects such as the convention centre has denied citizens any meaningful say on the form of large parts of the central city. The future of the 430ha red zone is a chance for citizens to help shape a more resilient city and create a positive legacy from the earthquakes.

An 18,000 signature petition has already been presented to Parliament supporting an Avon/ Ōtākaro River Park. Workshop presentations included recreating the kahikatea and matai forests and wetlands which once existed alongside the river, a 150ha predator proof eco-sanctuary linked to Travis Wetland, a network of separated cycle and walking paths, a range of food growing enterprises to increase food security, an arts trail, a New Zealand version of Cornwall’s Eden Project, a white water kayaking course and a flatwater sports lake. Others were as simple as ensuring new development avoids

light pollution so we can enjoy the stars in a dark night sky. The value of having part of Otautahi/Christchurch which is recognisably in Aotearoa/New Zealand with thriving indigenous habitats and native plants and wildlife was noted. So were the health benefits of easy access to walking and cycling paths; more trees for improving air quality, and natural wetlands to trap sediment, filter urban stormwater and reduce flood flows. Retaining much of the residential red zone as open space would help reduce flood risk by absorbing rainwater (rather than generating stormwater as hard surfaces do), and allowing ponding areas.

Great Service. Awesome Food.

Cherry blossoms for quake commemoration project Fashion „„ By Annabelle Dick TWENTY EIGHT young Japanese language students lost their lives when the CTV building collapsed during the February 2011 earthquake. Now Mt Pleasant resident David Bolam-Smith will plant eight cherry blossom trees in the Botanic Gardens to honour their memory. The trees donated by the city of Ishinomaki, Japan, will be planted at the Botanic Garden’s World Peace Bell garden next Wednesday (August 10) at 2.30pm to honour victims of New Zealand and Japan’s quakes. Just weeks later Japan was struck by a devastating 9.0 magnitude earthquake and tsunami killing about 16,000 people. The city of Ishinomaki lost more than 3000 people. New Zealand World Peace Bell member Mr Bolam-Smith said the commemoration project came about when he met Japanese families and representatives at the five-year anniversary in February.

will also travel to Mr Goto’s home city of Ishinomaki to return the favour by planting cherry blossoms remembering the victims from both the Christchurch and Japan quakes. “We’re building a cherry blossom bridge between the two countries,” he said. Ishinomaki is home to a training facility being built for the Rugby World Cup in 2019 and Mr Goto wanted to build the connection between Christchurch and Japan even more for the world cup. Mr Bolam-Smith will travel to the city in September to plant the trees outside the stadium in the presence of Japan Rugby Football Union representatives and the city mayor. “The trees and a commemorative plaque will honour the victims of both quakes, our country’s friendship and our love of rugby,” Mr Bolam-Smith said. He’s also urging residents to attend the public tree planting ceremony at the Botanic Gardens to remember those who lost their lives.

Sumner veteran marks 100 years Fashion „„ By Caitlin Miles IT’S BEEN 100 years of memories for Sumner RSA member Allan Adams as he celebrated his birthday on Monday. Mr Adams is a resident in the Brookhaven Retirement Village and Christchurch has always been home. He was born in Opawa in 1916 and attended primary school in Opawa before heading to Christchurch West High School. He said he was a “good kid” and only got the strap once, which he “didn’t deserve”. “A prefect walked past the door and I waved at him, the teacher saw me and I got the strap. I didn’t deserve that,” he said. After leaving high school, Mr Adams worked with his father for several weeks before getting two job offers on the same day. “I had wanted to work in radio and I got offered a job but I turned it down for a job at the Tai Tapu Dairy Company. It was the height of the depression and I wanted a job that was going to

pany for 43 years. He met his wife June in 1943 when he was 26. “I was in Wellington on holiday and I was down at the wharf when I saw her, we went on a couple of dances and she worked as an usher at the movie theatre. I went to the pictures quite a lot,” he said. During World War 2 Mr Adams was a radar technician in the New Zealand Air Force. It wasn’t until after basic training when he was on stand-by that he realised he was colour-blind. “They kicked me out after that,” Mr Adams said. He has been a member of the Sumner RSA for 40 years and is also a member of the New Brighton Working Men’s Club, he still goes for a beer with friends when he can. There is no secret to longevity for Mr Adams. He said hitting the century mark is not that important and all birthdays get the same after a while. “My wife always said, you’re such an old bugger, you’ll make 100.” “And now I have.”

Exhibition, tree-planting to benefit restoration trust „„ By Annabelle Dick THE QUAIL Island Ecological Restoration Trust is receiving support from the Lyttelton community with help in the form of tree-planting and an art exhibition. An exhibition is being held by Eco Artists New Zealand which has created more than 100 pieces to show at Oxford St Art in Lyttelton. Eco Artist NZ key artist Vivienne Bashford said artists with an interest in the environment and conservation have collaborated to hold a fundraising event for the trust. “We choose Quail Island for this one, they need the support because they are a volunteer group doing great things,” Mrs Bashford said.

Artists have created sculptures, oil paintings, jewellery and a double-glazed window to auction off during the monthlong exhibition. The showcase opened on Friday and will run until August 28 – some of the proceeds raised will go towards the restoration trust. Otamahua/Quail Island Ecological Restoration Trust chairman Ian McLennan said the help was extremely helpful. “We’re a purely voluntary organisation that relies on local funders so anything helps us. We’re very grateful to Eco Artists for holding this exhibition.” Lyttelton Port of Christchurch also helped in supporting its conservation efforts by delivering more than 3000 plants from the port to Quail Island for their annual tree-planting.

Helping grow the country

Ben Reid’s primary interest for his printmaking is NZ’s environment and the impact of humans on our precious land. His work often depicts tales of loss of habitat, extinction of species and introduced and exotic predators. The print work produced in 2016 is a continuation of themes of NZ’s preservation. Narratives within each work consider isolation, regret, time passing, acknowledgement of our history, where we live and what NZ is, and what it means to us, also about hope and optimism, and accepting and learning from our mistakes, past and present. As told by Warren Feeney, “Reid’s delicate, elegantly structured and at times gently humorous prints are here to remind us of what is at stake: the unselfconscious grace and beauty of New Zealand’s indigenous birds and the way they enrich our world”. Marahau wood carving artist Tim Wraight describes works for this exhibition come from 2 streams. “Firstly there are 2 carved cubes of Totara wood in which I explore the laying of pattern onto a strong form, with a whimsical approach combining dancing figures and a quite formal pattern. The other group of works; old hand tools refashioned for ‘ritual’ purposes, with new carved handles and decorations of feathers, fibre and found objects, give reference and reverence to rural traditions and pre mass production industry, and the people who powered these tools with their physical selves. As a hand tool user I am aware of the intimate relationship with the material that the user obtains and indeed needs in order to succeed in their work. Sound, sight, touch, force and a feel for the interaction between material and tool all come into play. I am drawn to the beauty of hand forged steel, and learnt from my grandfather how to use and maintain these simple but efficient objects.”

Fashion RURAL RETURNS: Scotty Bamford (left) returns for a brand new season of Rural New Zealand tomorrow night.

Scotty’s back on Rural NZ

Gardening HE’S BACK! Scotty Bamford returns to the screen tomorrow night on CTV, in an all new season of Rural New Zealand. Mr Bamford will return to the screen for the first time in nearly 12 months after a near-fatal truck crash over the Christmas period last year. The Rural New Zealand team have been hard at work following the end of season two, earlier this year with filming for season three beginning in July. “We’ve had some absolutely cracking days filming over the winter, the weather has really played ball. We’ve been travelling far and wide, leaving our gummy marks right across Canterbury,” said Mr Bamford. Mr Bamford is excited to show off what he and the team have been working on when episode one airs this week. “We catch up with two girls that are riding horse back,

circumnavigating New Zealand. We met them in Kaikoura, 3000km into their journey,” he said. This week’s episode sees Mr Bamford meet Carrfields founding director Greg Carr. “Over the next 16 weeks we’ll be learning more about the Carr family and how the Ashburton-based agricultural business has grown into a diverse international operation,” he said. Mr Bamford said that one of his highlights this season was a recent trip to Omarama, to meet the 2015 South Island Farmer of the Year co-winner Richard Subtil. Later in the season Mr Subtil will explain the effort that went into recognition in the competition and his plans to future-proof the family farm for generations to come. Episode one will air at 8pm tomorrow on CTV, Freeview channel 40.

„„ By Annabelle Dick AN 11-YEAR-OLD Sumner resident is well on her way to developing an art career with her range of cards becoming popular in the city. Sumner School pupil Zoe Elmey is designing and creating her own pieces of art under the brand Lots of Love Art. She’s been selling her work through local businesses for a year after her mother Becky Nisbet discovered that she was “exceptionally good at art”. “I thought ‘I’ll get a business mind going. I’ll get her doing cards and give her a mentality that she can make a business with her art,” Mrs Nisbet said. Zoe creates cards, framed pictures, canvases and painted rocks and distributes them throughout the city and country. She uses fine-tip black pens to create intricate designs and adds a splash of colour. Her designs are being stocked in stores including Salt, Re:START Mall and Health2000 in Wanaka. Nearly 500 of her cards have been sold since she began the feat.

“I first started doodling and mum was really impressed and said I should do some more. I’m so proud of seeing it sell and being able to say, ‘hey they’re my cards!’,” Zoe said. Mrs Nisbet was scared that her daughter might not succeed as an artist as it’s a difficult industry so she got Zoe to start small by making cards. “It came from my feeling of fear that, ‘oh my God, I’ve got a child that’s really good at art’. But I know other artists who haven’t really made it and they’re

supporting themselves through hospitality to make a living week to week.” Zoe saves all the money she makes from the cards – putting half into her savings and the other half back into production. She said her mother has taught her how to make a business out of her talent and it has given her some ideas for the future. “In the future I want to own my own shop where I make everything by hand. Drawing and creating things has always been a part of me.”

Our People

Daryl Sayer

Pharmacist, firefighter hot on Your Localthe Views serving community Daryl Sayer is the owner of Redcliffs Pharmacy and chief fire officer for the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade. Annabelle Dick spoke to him on how he manages the roles, juggles his busy lifestyle and why the area is his home away from home

News

Daryl, you’re heavily involved within the Sumner-Redcliffs community – can you tell me about what you do? I’ve been at the Redcliffs Pharmacy for 18 years coowning it with my wife and I first joined the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade 23 years ago. They’re both communitybased organisations and I love being involved within the local community. Sumner-Redcliffs is a great place to be able to volunteer and work at the same time. How long have you been in the area? I moved to Sumner at the end of 1991. I’m from Foxton in the North Island and I went to university in Dunedin where I met my wife at Otago [University]. We both moved up here when we completed our degrees. What prompted the move to Christchurch out of all places? I followed my now wife here. She wanted to come here and we were going out at that stage so yeah I followed her. It’s a bit different from the Manawatu – what’s kept you here? I love the community. It’s a great climate and my family and I fit in here – we just love living in this city. You’re a pharmacist and pharmacy owner but also the chief of the local volunteer fire brigade – firstly why did you join the volunteer service? I grew up in a small town and I

had family and friends who were a part of it so it had always been an interest. But once I moved to Sumner and learnt there was a volunteer fire brigade nearby it was the next step naturally. My brother is also a chief fire officer in Foxton and another brother has been in both the Foxton and Sumner brigades in the past. So I inquired about joining when I moved here and went from there. And you’ve worked your way up through the brigade I see? I started at the bottom and worked my way up through the ranks to deputy chief fire officer and then to chief fire officer. What’s your favourite thing about being a part of the fire brigade? I love the camaraderie – you get a whole broad range of different people from different backgrounds and ages and we’re all there to do the same thing. It’s a real good bunch to be with. Have you had any memorable moments from your time on the brigade? Well I once spent a considerable amount of time and effort trying to get into a wall cavity where a cat’s owner said the cat had disappeared into, only to turn around to see the cat calmly walking around the corner. What things have you seen while in the service? I spent time responding in Sumner at the CTV building on day one, and numerous days in and around the Sumner area

after the February 2011 quake – we had a co-ordination centre set up at our station where I worked alongside police, ambulance, the army and Geotech experts. I was awarded a NZ Fire Service Citation for my work during the 2011 earthquakes. You must be a very busy person – how do you manage your role in the brigade while also owning and running the local pharmacy? I am extremely thankful to my wife and two daughters for supporting me in my activities. Sometimes I can be gone for several hours with no prior notice – they are very understanding. There’s a certain amount of delegation involved both business-wise and brigade-wise

so you need to have good staff. I also get to hand out the roles to other people instead of taking it on all myself. So you’re heavily involved in the community – you have even more going on outside of the brigade and pharmacy don’t you? Yeah, I’m the co-ordinator for the Redcliffs Business Group and we represent the local businesses – although we haven’t been too active lately. I’m on the board for the Canterbury Community Pharmacy Group and that basically represents the interests of pharmacy businesses in the region. I’m also a Justice of the Peace. When you’re not volunteering or running the pharmacy what

do you like to do? I love spending time with family, playing a bit of golf and I really like reading. So you live with your family in the area? Yes, I live with my wife and I have two daughters – one is studying in Dunedin and another is in her last year of high school. You’ve been regarded as a bit of a local hero – you won a business hero award at one point from a resident who praised you for going out of your way as the local pharmacist is that right? Well, I don’t know about that . . . but it is quite humbling. It was a few years ago though, so I wouldn’t bother mentioning it.

SCHOOLS Our Lady Star of the Sea School’s concept last term was the 21st century. Year 5-6 pupils decided to look at how things such as art, education and science have been influenced by 21st-century technology. The pupils decorated and varnished their desks over a four-week period. Local artist Anneke Stewart recently took up residence in Sumner and has just completed an aerosol art mural for the school. The mural depicts the Sumner beach and the cross and stars represent the school.

Spa pool owners welcome a law change A

fter living in a significantly polluted area of Southern China for the past 6 years with an average of five visible stars on a clear night my family and I have recently been appreciating the galaxies of stars visible in the evenings from Governors Bay. The cool winter evenings have not been any deterrent from our star-gazing as we have been enjoying them from the warmth of our spa pool. From discussions with Bay residents it turns out that we are not the only ones enjoying the stars from our spa each night and that many of us enjoy winter evening soaks. This got me thinking of the law around the fencing requirements for spa pools and how they apply to Christchurch and Bay residents. Current Law The Fencing of Swimming Pools Act 1987 (the FOSP Act) was enacted and came into force in July 1987 in response to a number of tragic child drownings in swimming pools. The FOSP Act applies to any spa pool installed after 1 September 1987 at any time that the spa pool is filled or party filled. Under the FOSP Act, every spa pool owner must ensure that it is fenced in compliance with the Building Act 2004.

Exemption Option Under the FOSP Act, local Councils do, however, have a discretion in determining whether or not a spa pool may be exempt from the fencing requirements. In exercising that discretion, a local Council, taking into account the characteristics of the pool and the property, as well as any other relevant circumstances, must be satisfied that an exemption from the application of the FOSP Act would not increase the danger to young children of falling into the pool. Over the years, the Christchurch City Council has changed its position on the exemption of spa pools from the FOSP Act. Whereas previously the Council has required all spa pools to be fenced with no scope for an exemption, there is now an option to apply for an exemption for your spa pool. The process for an exemption involves completing a standard application, paying a fee of $220, and providing plans of the spa pool and photos of the lockable lid. The application lists 11 requirements, based on the NZS8500:2006/03.10 standards, that the spa pool must comply with for the exemption to be granted. They include a minimum top height level of 760mm from the ground, a mechanical locking system, and warning stickers.

New law The Building (Pools) Amendment Bill is currently before Parliament and has just undergone its Second Reading. If the Bill becomes law, it will repeal the FOSP Act and amend the Building Act 2004. The Select Committee Report recognises that spa pools (and hot tubs) “present a low drowning risk to young children, often have safety covers, and often are portable, and therefore difficult for territorial authorities to locate.” The Report also noted that 96% of spa pools in New Zealand are not currently fenced. During the Second Reading it was pointed out that in the last 10 years only one child under five has drowned in a spa pool in New Zealand, compared to a higher number who had drowned in baths. It was also noted that to

require the 96% of non-compliant spa pools to become compliant would cost in excess of $300 million. The Bill defines spa pools and hot tubs as “small heated pools”, and they are excluded from the fencing requirements. New proposed provisions of the Building Act will simply require spa pools to have adequate safety covers in order to restrict access when the spa pool is not in use. Summary If the new Bill becomes law (in its current form), then your spa pool will not need to be fenced, nor be granted an exemption by the Council, as long as it has an adequate safety cover to comply with the new provisions of the Building Act 2004. Happy star gazing!

Senior Sumner club SPORTS skipper resigns „„ By Fraser Walker-Pearce SUMNER RUGBY’S senior club captain Garry Mitchell has resigned after five years in the position. Sumner’s Hawkins Division 1 Cup player Lawrence Babe said losing Mr Mitchell was a shame. “Garry resigning was a bit of a shock to the system, because he was great in the role,” Babe said. “He stepped into the role when he came back from overseas and he’s just been great for us. He’s a great club man, and he will be greatly missed.” Sumner Rugby Football Club president Andy Toy said in the club’s newsletter that Mr Mitchell has been a massive asset to the club. “He has been extremely supportive and has given a tremendous amount of hours each week, almost daily bringing his passion to the benefit of our club,” Mr Toy said. “Most people would not even

TOP FINISH: Ferrymead Bays’ 11th grade Panthers had lots to smile about after making the final of a local competition recently. Four Bays teams were entered into two local tournaments during the school holidays. Nurse Maude COMMuNITY ParTNersHIPs

driving force behind Nurse Maude The supporT of the people of Christchurch for Nurse Maude’s work started the day sibylla Maude first stepped out on the streets of Christchurch 120 years ago with the community recognising the need and responding. “Just as Nurse Maude has always been a large part of the community, so the community has been such a large part of Nurse Maude,” says sue Bramwell, general manager of marketing for Nurse Maude. That partnership with the community continues today through its support of Nurse Maude’s hospice shops, Maudes on Trade Me and key sponsorships which include harcourts holmwood. harcourts holmwood has been, literally, behind Nurse Maude for more than seven years now, with its sponsorship of an initial five cars now increased to more than 30. every year sales consultants from harcourts holmwood are clocking up millions of kilometres across the greater Christchurch and Canterbury region. The Nurse Maude cars are on the road seven days a week, delivering nursing care across Canterbury and the chances are when you see one of Nurse Maude’s distinctive white cars on the road that the back window will be carrying the name and photo of a sales consultant from the harcourts holmwood franchise. With the agents’ photo, name and contact details in the rear window, both

harcourts holmwood and Nurse Maude are benefiting from the partnership and Bramwell says mutual benefit is what a good sponsorship agreement is all about. “For us it’s essential support for Nurse Maude, for harcourts holmwood it’s a very effective way of letting people know that the company not only cares about supporting the community it does business with, it is actually doing so,” says Bramwell. harcourts holmwood has found that people like the fact that the sales consultants they list their home with are donating a significant amount of money to Nurse Maude every year. playing a key part in helping Nurse Maude care for the people of Canterbury doesn’t just start and stop with Nurse Maude’s cars however. harcourts holmwood’s support went above and beyond during the earthquakes when its sales consultants turned out to help deliver water, portable toilets and blankets to Nurse Maude’s most vulnerable clients. It also has regular clothing drives for the Nurse Maude hospice shops and gathers donations from its events. “Individually and collectively the people of harcourts holmwood have contributed a great deal to the work of Nurse Maude,” says Bramwell. “It’s an enduring sponsorship of which they are justifiably proud and we are very fortunate to have.”

Nurse Maude COMMuNITY ParTNersHIPs

Perfect synergy

in sponsorship There are some partnerships that just make perfect sense, and the one between eCoCentral and Nurse Maude would be one of those. WheN Nurse Maude started Maudes on Trade Me, selling almost everything from furniture to fine jewellery to raise money for its nursing services it soon ran out of storage space. “In the past a lack of space meant that Maudes on Trade Me, had often been unable to take large volumes of donated goods,” says sue Bramwell, general manager marketing for Nurse Maude. With the considerable resources of eCoCentral now behind it, however, Maudes on Trade Me is able to clear entire house lots, moving the larger items through the eCoshop on Blenheim road. The partnership has been a great success with Maudes on Trade Me now able to clear entire house lots and take in a much broader range of furniture and whiteware. “people can still drop smaller items off to any of our hospice shops,” says Bramwell, “but we can now go out and

collect house lots of saleable furniture and whiteware if people want to email us or give us a call.” For Judi sefton, Chief executive of eCoCentral and Jim Magee, Chief executive of Nurse Maude, the partnership simply makes sense, allowing a wide range of goods to be recycled and sold to support Nurse Maude’s services rather than be dumped. “eCoCentral is all about maximising the volume of goods that can be recycled and minimising landfill,” says sefton, “and to be able to do that while helping raise money for Nurse Maude can only be a good thing.” “The partnership between eCoCentral and Nurse Maude clearly demonstrates the huge value the business community can bring to organisations such as ours,” says Bramwell. Those who need to downsize, clear some space or simply see unwanted furniture and household goods to

benefit the wider community rather than just be dumped see Maudes on Trade Me as the ideal home for those items. For Nurse Maude it means much needed financial support for nursing services at a time of increasing demand, while eCoCentral is all about caring for the community through recycling and reducing landfill. “ecoCentral and Nurse Maude talk about caring for the people of Canterbury together and that is exactly what’s happening here,” says Bramwell. “everyone is benefiting.”

With the considerable resources of eCoCentral now behind it, Maudes on Trade Me is able to clear entire house lots, moving the larger items through the eCoshop on Blenheim road.

Carol & Chris

Locally based plumbers can sort all your problems Ferrymead-based plumbing company Laser Plumbing Christchurch East has been providing plumbing and drainlaying services to the local community since 1992. Owned and operated by Sumner residents Chris Dick and Carol McCann, Laser Plumbing has an experienced team of 26, including plumbers and drainlayers, who have the expertise to solve any plumbing or drainage problem. “We are here to help. We welcome questions, so feel free to call and have a chat about what is going on at your property. There are some things we can help you solve over the phone. If we can’t help we will most likely know someone who can.” Having been married to a plumber for a long time, Carol has learnt there are things you can do before calling a plumber or a drainlayer.

Hot hot water If your hot water is over 55 degrees it is unsafe, especially for baby or grandma. New houses have their hot water governed by a safety valve called a tempering valve, which moderates your hot water to 55 degrees and helps save money. They can be retro fitted to older plumbing systems.

Keep an eye on your water meter If all the taps are off in the house and the water meter is still rolling over that’s a sign you have a problem. It could be water leaking down the back of your toilet, a leak under your driveway or hot water discharging on the roof or over a drain. Unseen water at pressure can undermine the structural integrity of driveways or foundations. If you can’t find any reason for the meter to be ticking over then call us – it may help avoid an expensive repair later.

Check inside cupboards A lot of plumbing issues go unnoticed until they become an expensive repair and some just require a nut to be tightened. Plumbing has hot and cold elements that expand and contract and these can lead to plumbing fixtures or fittings developing leaks over a period. So next time you open a drawer or cupboard door check for signs of water– it could save you a costly repair later.

Where is the water meter? We often get calls from clients in a panic with water gushing out from somewhere it shouldn’t. It’s good to know how to turn the water off to your property. All water meter positions are logged by the Christchurch City Council. You can call CCC Water Supply or go to this link http:// canterburymaps.govt.nz/. It has the precise locations of where your water meter should be – just type in your address.

Do you know where your hot water cylinder relief drain is? It’s important to know if your hot water cylinder is discharging water either on to the roof or over a drain. This could be indicating a faulty element, thermostat, relief valve or pressure valve and sometimes more than one of those. If the relief drain is flowing it is costing money so it’s worth checking.

Insinkerator not working Turn the power to the unit off and then try to clear the waste using tongs. There is usually a small red reset button under the unit. This will often get the unit going again without having to call anyone out.

HEALTH & BEAUTY Simple Ways To Stress Less Do you want to feel more relaxed but struggle to see how you can create balance in your busy life? Here are five simple tips to de-stress our lives. For many people, busyness and stress is a daily experience. We feel hurried, distracted and weighed down by the obligations and responsibilities of our lives. When we don’t have enough balance, our lives can feel miserable and lack joy and substance. Days and weeks can go by without us ever stopping to take a breath. It can make us feel disconnected from life, disconnected from ourselves and others around us. True health and wellness comes from not only eating well, but also reducing stress and finding a sense of balance and harmony as often as possible. no matter how busy you are it’s possible to create a well-balanced life. Try these five simple strategies to get started.

BreaTHe When we’re stressed, our breathing becomes chesty, which signals to the body we’re in danger. Become mindful of your breathing. Intentionally stop throughout the day and take some deep, diaphragmatic breaths. This is an effective way to let your body know you’re safe. If you can, take 10 minutes to sit or lie on your back and count your breaths, letting go of any thoughts that come in and out of your mind.

creaTe a mornIng rouTIne Take 30 minutes every morning to ensure you are set up physically, mentally and emotionally for a really great day ahead. When you first get up, physically engage your body by doing a short yoga routine, or 20-30 minutes of exercise. or try centring yourself with 10 minutes of stillness or meditation. When you create a small morning routine for yourself, you will find you are so much better able to handle the challenges that come your way throughout the day than if you started the day in a panic.

Learn To say no We carry around this unhealthy belief that putting ourselves first is wrong and selfish. But when we do things out of obligation or because we feel we “have to”, we approach these things with a sense of resentment and they create an unnecessary level of stress in our lives. When faced with a social engagement or request, consider whether this is something that will light you up or bring you down and whether you have the physical or mental energy to be able to commit to it. When you learn

meDITaTe Through meditation you find a sense of inner peace and calm and it’s the quickest way to establish more balance in your life. Find a practice that works for you.

to filter things this way, you rid yourself of resentment and obligation and, in turn, bring the best version of you to activities, social occasions, work and your relationships with loved ones. Take acTIon Instead of feeling helpless and paralysed by a state of overwhelming pressure, take control by choosing one action that will move you forward. you don’t need to see the end point, just take a small step to create a sense of momentum. This can make a huge difference to how you perceive a situation or circumstance and the momentum instantly pulls you forward.
