Motorists warned to keep speed down near school

By Tom Doudney SPEEDING DRIVERS near West Rolleston Primary School are creating concerns for parents, residents and police.

The school opened in February, prompting the district council to lower the speed limit on Dunns Crossing Rd from 100km/h to 70km/h.

Senior Sergeant Pete Stills (left) said police had had a number of complaints about speed on Dunns Crossing Rd and Lowes Rd. “Some people might be taking a bit of time to adjust to the presence of the new school, but obviously there is a risk with the prevalence of the pupils in that area now, so just as a safety concern we will be focusing our

patrols there a wee bit more,” he said.

“We just ask that people keep their speed down and comply with the speed restrictions and particularly the 40km/h speed past the school requirement.”

Senior Sergeant Stills said the road had somewhat of a rural character, being on the edge of Rolleston.

“There will be a perception to motorists that it’s open road and the risk is reduced, but the reality is it’s not.”

He said police would rather change behaviours than have to ticket people.

“History teaches us that when we focus on bad behaviour outside schools, we predominately catch parents with children at the school, which is always a concern but that’s the way it is.”

News Mail deliveries set to halve

By Tom Doudney THE NUMBER of mail delivery days will be slashed in half for Darfield, West Melton and Sheffield starting from Monday.

Delivery will fall from six days to three in these towns, as well as Oxford in the Waimakariri district, as part of restructuring at New Zealand Post, which is in response to falling mail volumes.

Rural delivery addresses in the surrounding areas will continue to receive mail six days a week.

A New Zealand Post spokeswoman said the state-owned enterprise would remain committed to delivering 95 per cent of mail within three working days as it did currently.

“The way we’re delivering mail is changing, but our service standards are not,” the spokeswoman said.

“Express parcels will be delivered overnight, and post office box and rural delivery services will continue as they are now.”

District councillor Sam Broughton said people he had spoken to didn’t like the idea that services were going to be reduced.

“Getting things delivered regularly is something which I think is an important part of the

way people live their lives,” Cr Broughton said.

“It’s not the end of the world, but it’s just not a very nice thing to be happening.”

However, Darfield Community Committee chairman and Malvern Butchery owner Paddy McKay said he hadn’t heard a lot of concern about the changes.

“A lot of our stuff is emailed now,” Mr McKay said.

“If it’s going to affect anyone, it’s probably going to be the

older generation, but mail is even limited to them now as well.”

West Melton Residents’ Association chairman Jeff Waters said he hadn’t heard from any residents upset about the changes.

Several commenters on the West Melton Community Page on Facebook said the changes were understandable and they didn’t mind.

In July last year, New Zealand

Post started delivering standard mail every second day in larger towns and cities, including Christchurch, Ashburton and Timaru.

Those changes are now being rolled out to smaller towns.

Other Selwyn towns will be affected in the next few years, but the time line is yet to be announced.

Changes came into effect for Amberley, Hanmer Springs, Waikari and Waiau yesterday.

ROLLESTON’S Masefield Drive could be in line for $150,000 upgrade which would see a footpath and kerbing installed along a 320m section.

The district council will vote tomorrow on whether to add the project to the current Annual Plan.

Funding comes from an unbudgeted Sicon dividend which has now been added to the annual budget.

Masefield Drive is classified as an arterial road, and is a key route to the town centre carrying about 4000 vehicles per day.

It is expected to become busier when the Weedons interchange is constructed as part of Stage 2 of the Southern Motorway Extension which is likely to result in Levi Rd and Masefield Drive being used even more as a main route to the town centre.

District councillor Mark Alexander expected residents would be pleased at the investment.

“It’s an area that used to be rural residential so it didn’t have a footpath but it has since been subdivided into an urban form but there hasn’t been enough contribution from that development to pay for footpaths,” he said.

Student UN-bound

By Caitlin Miles A BIZARRE question and lost email led to a Lincoln High School student heading to the United Nations headquarters.

Hannah Long has been accepted to the United Nations Youth New Zealand Global Development Tour 2017.

Before being accepted she was interviewed by the directors of the United Nations Youth New Zealand.

“The first question they asked me was would I rather have ramen for hair or mushrooms for ears. I picked ramen, I got the straight hair gene and I have always wanted curly hair,” Hannah said.

The moment she found out she had been accepted to the trip not as exciting as it was stressful. The email notifying her she had been accepted got sent to her junk email.

“We got told we would be notified by email if we had been accepted, it had got to 11pm and I didn’t think I had been accepted, then I checked my spam for some reason and it was there,” she said.

Rafael Clarke has also been accepted for the programme.

It involves three weeks travelling around Europe before spending a week at the UN headquarters in New York to learn about global development, international cooperation, and the role the UN plays in both.

Hannah has been a member of the UN Youth New Zealand for three years. She has previously represented France at a UN Youth conference. The young people have to gather information on the country they represent and discuss the issues with each other.

Hannah has been keeping a keen eye on the news overseas and while she is a little apprehensive she is also excited by the chance to be around so much change.

There were 22 people throughout New Zealand selected for the trip.

Hannah has started a Givealittle page titled Get Hannah to the Global Development Tour 2017 to help her raise the $9000 to pay for it before the tour starts next year.

Selwyn history in print

By Tom Doudney A NEW book which would be the first to extensively cover Selwyn’s history is in the works.

The impetus for the book came out of planning for Rolleston’s 150th anniversary celebrations in October.

District council staff member Wayne Stack, who has a masters degree in military history, volunteered to write it after an approach from district councillor and Rolleston anniversary committee chairman Jeff Bland.

It is expected to take 12 to 18 months to complete.

Mr Stack said the exact scope of the book has yet to be decided but it was likely to be a substantial work covering the history of the whole district, rather than just the Rolleston area.

“There have been books written about the Ellesmere county and the Malvern county which were part of the amalgamation to bring Selwyn together but there is nothing there to actually put Selwyn on the map as a district in itself,” he said.

Selwyn was formed in 1989 when the Ellesmere and Malvern counties and the rural half of the Paparua county were amalgamated.

A previous book had covered the history of Rolleston up until the period before the town’s growth had really taken off but with the milestone coming up it was important to have a book which also reflected recent history.

“Since we have been talking about this 150th it has become obvious that we need to update our history,” he said.

“We think of history as 40, 50, 60 years ago but hang on, history is yesterday as well.”

Mr Stack will also be working on a display of historic photographs and other items from the

Rolleston area which will be part of the 150th anniversary celebrations.

It will be one of a number of displays and events to take place over three days from October 14 to 16. The main celebrations will be held on October 15 at a site on the corner of Jones Rd and Hoskyns Rd. •Anyone able to contribute historic photographs, or other items and material which might help Mr Stack with compiling the book and 150th anniversary exhibit can phone 347 2851.

WORK WILL start within a week on changes to a five-legged roundabout in Rolleston.

The Goulds Rd, Tennyson St, Springtson Rolleston Rd and Lowes Rd roundabout is ‘not suitable’ for the growing amount of traffic using it.

The access to the roundabout from Goulds Rd will be cut off later this month and will be permanently closed from August 1, changing the current five-road intersection to four.

Goulds Rd will become a dead end near the dog park.

The Selwyn Times previously reported that the Rolleston Residents Association and Rolleston College has safety concerns around students navigating the roundabout once Rolleston College opens next year.

Broadlands Drive has been extended past the college to create a roundabout at Springston Rolleston Rd.

The extension to Broadlands Drive past the college to create a roundabout at Springston Rolleston Rd have finished so now work to change the fivelegged roundabout will begin.

District council asset manager of transportation, Andrew Mazey said the changes will be made because the roundabout has had an increasing amount of traffic use it .

“The existing layout of the roundabout as a five-road junction is not suitable given the growing vehicle numbers and the change is designed to improve the roundabout’s safety,” Mr Mazey said.

During the work on the roundabout people will still be able to access it from Goulds Rd until August 1.

Traffic lights are planned to be put in place at the intersection in three year’s time.

The smell must be horrible and I can’t imagine what the dust must be like. The other people who were living there first didn’t buy their land or house expecting a pig farm to go in near them with no warning. It’s just rude.

I’m glad the district council seem to actually be doing something about this problem and making them remove the pigs.

It will be interesting to see if they listen to them. Good on the homeowners for speaking up and not letting it continue.

Readers respond to last week’s article on $12 million that has been put into cleaning up Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere.

Phillip Marcs, of Prebbleton – The money for cleaning the lake is not nearly enough. I haven’t lived in Selwyn for very long, only several years, and I am told that it was once a beautiful place that was clean and full of life.

The lake is one of the biggest in New Zealand, $12 million is clearly not going to be enough to get it back to what it once was. I would love to take my family there and be able to use it for recreational use. It needs a serious look at and for someone to actually make the health of the lake a priority.

It’s a real shame to see something that like this go to waste. How much beneficial work can be done over decades? Will it even be noticeable? It needs a serious cash injection and proper work needs to be done quicker than ‘decades’.

I don’t want to see it deteriorate further and become worse.

Things need to change.

This lake can be so beautiful to look at some days but the fact it is so unhealthy is common knowledge.

With a clean-up the lake could look and be so healthy and a

great place to enjoy. I sometimes go there, not to get in the water, but just to enjoy the sight and scenery and I think it is such a shame more people don’t use it.

I think $12 million is the right start but how long will it take to make it like it was?

They say decades and that’s a really long time. The place needs to be fixed now.

I understand the need for them but to set one up without letting the people near by know what’s going on is not good enough.

Setting up an operation like this leads to a whole load of problems. The noise, dust and mainly the smell. I certainly would complain too if I lived near it.

How back and forth from the district council though. They get complaints from the neighbours about it make the farm owners get an abatement notice and apply for consent then grant them the consent.

Where is the consistency?

Now they’re telling them they have to get rid of the pigs. Must be confusing for all the parties involved.

Another project added to help benefit Are you an artist yourself?

It’s just a hobby, it’s nothing serious. I dabble in painting and drawing. I’ve done patchwork for 40 years though, I learnt with my sister-in-law.

How long have you lived in Selwyn?

We’ve lived in Windwhistle for 31 years. We lived in the Mackenzie District for several years before we moved here. I moved from England to New Zealand when I met my husband so it was quite a big move but I was happy to do it.

After moving to the other side of the world for love, Dee Innes has made Windwhistle her home. She spoke to Caitlin Miles about taking on a farming life and why she became a trustee on the Hororata Community Trust.

Congratulations on becoming a trustee on the Hororata Community Trust.

Thank you, yes it’s great to be on the trust and to continue to support them and the work they do in the community.

Why did you want to become a trustee?

The reason I became a trustee is because I hope to give my input and be as successful with the trust as I can be. I know a lot of people in the area since I have been here so long so, hopefully, that will help and they’ll continue to support me.

Do you do a lot of work for the community?

Ever since I moved here I’ve had an interest in the area and people, it was a great way to meet people and get to know the community and the area. I didn’t do so much when my son was small.

Once he started at Windwhistle School I got more involved with the community and I continued to add more projects as he got older.

Can you tell me about some of the work you have done within the community?

Well, it has all been on-going over a few years now. I’ve always been interested in people so that’s why I like working with the community. We use to have ‘Dee’s Day’ where people in the community could come and sell their wares. It just started as a day for some friends to try and sell some items but it grew to 100 stalls. We would get 200 to 300 people show up at our property for it and it would turn into a big catch-up.

I was also involved in the Northern Community Board when it was running. We got to travel around the area and learn more about Selwyn, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was also involved in the Northern Community Arts, Arts Canterbury, Malvern Community Arts and Celebrating Selwyn.

Have you had a lot to do with art.

Yes, I enjoy art and seeing it continue to do well in Selwyn.

There are some people who are very good artists and it’s great to be able to support them and continue to work with and recognise their art. I was also the art teacher at Darfield High School.

How did you meet your husband?

Our family knew his family and my sister had worked on his family farm when she was in New Zealand. I went to the farm to say thank you for giving her work and a place to live while she was here. That’s when

I met him, Gerald.

Was your first trip to New Zealand the time you met your Gerald?

I had visited once many years before with my grandmother, we travelled by ship that time. I was seven. That was very exciting as a young girl. I got use to the movement on the ship very quickly. I remember when we finally got off the boat I kept swaying for a while. We visited friends and then went back. It certainly was a long time on a ship to visit here but it was great fun.

Did you travel all the way to New Zealand just to say thank you to his family?

At the time I was visiting friends that were sprinkled around the globe. I went from Japan to China to Indonesia then on to Australia and then I came to New Zealand and met Gerald and stayed.

That was a pretty bold move, did you have family here?

No, I didn’t, it was just me. I had some friends I was travelling with but when I met Gerald I just decided to stay. His family were wonderful too, so I didn’t mind being here without my family because I had his. I stayed in New Zealand for as long as I could and then I had to go back to England because my visa ran out. We got married over there and moved back here.

the community How long had you known one another for before getting married?

Well, I had known his parents but not him directly. We met in January of 1976 and were married by the August. That was the done thing back then though, it wasn’t uncommon, we didn’t live together before we got married either. It was different back then.

Was it hard leaving all your family in England?

My family has visited me over the years so I was never cut off from them. Also Gerald’s family were great. They really became my family, they gave me lots of support and they were very welcoming.

When you went back to England to get married why didn’t you stay there?

Gerald is a farm boy through and through, I couldn’t take him out of the farm and put him in England. I was happy to follow him back here and set up life on a farm.

Did you come from a farm?

No. When I moved over here to be with Gerald I learnt about working on a farm. It was quite a change from life in England to New Zealand, so that was quite a good challenge to take on. I didn’t really do too much on

What did you farm?

Sheep, cattle and deer.

You said you taught art at Darfield High School, did you study art before you came to New Zealand?

I studied African history at London University. After I finished I lived and worked in South Africa for about 14

months and visited Tanzania.

Do you still travel?

Yes we do. We have just come back from a trip to Hungary to see a friend of ours. We met in Budapest and travelled to see her father. We still have friends all around the world who we try and visit when we can. That’s our way of relaxing. Also spending time with my family and our three grandchildren.

Lincoln man top apprentice A LINCOLN resident has won an apprentice of the year competition.

Ramil Mifrano took out the stage three flooring apprentice of the year section at the annual Building and Construction Industry Training Organisation Flooring Apprentice of the Year Awards.

The winners were selected based on their achievements and the skills they displayed during their courses.

BCITO chief executive Warwick Quinn said the awards are about recognising apprentices.

“These events really are the culmination of everything we are about at BCITO. Celebrating excellence in our young achievers, after years of dedication and hard work, is heart-warming to us and really reflects what we want every apprentice under our wing to aspire to,” Mr Quinn said.

Mr Mifrano moved to New Zealand from the Philippines six years ago.

He decided on a flooring apprenticeship after starting work for John Cooper Flooring and finding that he enjoyed the challenging nature of the trade.

He worked there for three years and then completed his final year at Dominion Flooring.

Mr Mifrano now runs his own installation company, R M Flooring.

BCITO block course provider floor NZ principal tutor Jeff Henry said Mr Mifrano always took on a challenge.

“On the job, he was always punctual, open to suggestions, had a great sense of humour and was a pleasure to deal with,” he said.

Mr Mifrano is now completing his second qualification through BCITO in floor and wall tiling.

LEARNING: A Waihora girls’ rugby team picked up some skills from the Black Ferns’ captain. The Waihora under-7 pink team spent two days during the school holidays learning from Black Ferns’ captain Kendra Cocksedge. During their training, the girls learned about tackling, scrummaging and line outs. They will put the skills to use in future games.

LEADER: Westpac Lincoln manager Nick Stanbury presented year 8 Springston School pupil Georgia Airey with a Sir Peter Blake Young Leader Award. She was nominated by her teachers for being a positive role model and always taking on challenges with a smile.

Lincoln HS score first win in UC Championship

By Gordon Findlater THE WAIT is over for Lincoln High School – the first XV had their first win in the UC Championship on Saturday.

The 19-14 win over Ashburton College was their first win in 2016.

The team couldn’t have picked a better time, with the match airing live on Sky Sport as part of their first XV rugby coverage.

“It was a great win. We were trying not to hype up the game too much during the week and just wanted to treat it like another match,” said Lincoln High School director of rugby Leslie Greenslade.

Ashburton scored two tries to Lincoln’s one.

Corey McKay sealing victory for the home side.

McKay was perfect, kicking four penalties from as many attempts.

He also kicked a conversion from the touchline following Kay’s try.

“He had an outstanding game. He had the ball on a string and made some really crucial kicks,” said Greenslade.

It’s been a tough year up to this point for Lincoln, who came into Saturday with 11 defeats and a draw from 12 games.

“That’s the pleasing thing for the team, they were shell-shocked following the first game of the year.

“They’ve all improved individually and as a team from then on,” said Greenslade.

So many of us think about getting fit or running a marathon but the hardest part is making the commitment. So to avoid yet another year disappearing without getting off the couch sign up for the Shoe Clinic Selwyn Running Festival on 6 November 2016.

This local event, held in Leeston, is in its 6th year and gaining momentum. There is a distance for everyone from the Half Marathon to the Kids Dash as well as walking events. There is even a three person team category in the 10km run.

The course starts in Leeston and runs the rural roads to Southbridge and beyond. There is no better feeling as you turn the last bend and head for home down the main road of Leeston with the locals lining the street cheering you on.

We want to encourage all runners and walkers whether this is your first event or you are an elite runner. By signing up now you have made your first step to achieving your goal.

LINCOLN ROAD RUNNERS

LRR is the newest of the Road Runner groups and makes use of the roads in and around Lincoln University. We are lucky to have the full support of the University and are super proud to be hosting our weekly community group there.

The Rec Centre is the ideal home for the group and the ‘figure 8’ course means you are never far from home. This is a group, like Ellesmere and Malvern Road Runners, that caters to all abilities. It is a fantastic chance for the public to (re)acquaint themselves with the university and we appreciate the use of their grounds and facilities.

Everyone is welcome so come along on Tuesday evenings from 5.40pm and join in with the active Lincoln community!!

Selwyn residents are being invited to celebrate the Rio Olympics and support St John’s project to build a new facility in Rolleston with a fun afternoon of games and awards at the Selwyn Aquatic Centre on Saturday 6 August.

The Olympic Games will officially open in Rio de Janeiro on Friday 5 August (the morning of 6 August New Zealand Time) and 195 New Zealand athletes will be competing in 19 sports.

“We’re excited to host a fun event which everyone in Selwyn can be part of to celebrate the start of the Olympics,” says Aquatic Facilities Manager Kathy Moore. “This is also an opportunity to celebrate the contribution everyone who has been part of our Swim to Rio challenge has made to helping raise funds for a local facility for St John while improving their fitness at the same time.”

The Swim to Rio challenge has been running since February with a target for swimmers to cover a combined distance of 11,765 kilometres – the distance from Lyttelton to Rio de Janeiro. There has been full community support through sponsorship of swimmers, sausage sizzles, raffles, donations and a bake sale with the funds going to the Rolleston St John project. Over 10,000 kilometres has been completed to date.

The Aquatic Olympics on Saturday 6 August will run between 2-4pm at the centre. Swim to Rio Challenge participants who have covered the longest distance will be recognised with an award at a podium presentation. A cheque from the challenge will also be presented to St John.

Everyone is welcome to participate in the event which will include Olympic-themed water games like javelin noodle throw, aquatic sprints and paddle boat relay races.

“We’re inviting ‘Olympic’ competitors both young and old to enter the games and dress up in the colours of the country they want to represent,” says Kathy Moore. “We are looking forward to the day and we think it will be fantastic fun.”

There will also be music, spot prizes sponsored by Speedo and a bake sale with the profits going to St John. Normal pool entry admission prices apply. Swimmers are requested not to wear face paint in the pool.

New library kiosks coming soon Selwyn Libraries are rolling out new kiosks at each library branch over the next month and staff are looking forward to showing you how quick and easy they are use.

Lincoln and Rolleston library customers have been using self-issue kiosks for over a year now. The kiosks can be used to issue library items, see what items you have on loan, renew items and pay any charges via cash or EFTPOS.

Roundabout changes affecting Goulds Road Following the completion of the Broadlands Drive extension and the installation of a new roundabout at its intersection with Springston Rolleston Road, the Goulds Road leg of the Lowes Road/Tennyson Street roundabout will be closed to traffic from Monday 1 August onwards. The change is being made to improve the roundabouts safety as vehicle numbers using it have increased. The reduced traffic using Goulds Road will also make this a safer walking and cycling route.

From 1 August onwards, access to the west end of Goulds Road will be through Broadlands Drive. A full upgrade to this roundabout is planned for 2019/20 with traffic signals to be installed to provide an improved crossing for pedestrians and cyclists.

Korean students in Selwyn schools

NEW STUDENTS: The Korean students were welcomed by politician Steven Joyce at a ceremony in Methven last week.

KOREAN STUDENTS are about to make Lincoln and Darfield High Schools their own for the next eight weeks.

As part of the Free Trade Agreement that was signed between New Zealand and Korea last year, 150 Korean students will attend high school and university in New Zealand as part of a three-year programme.

Fifty-five of those students are at Canterbury schools.

The Korean students come from rural and semi-rural backgrounds and have been accepted to the programme on scholar-

ships to improve their English language skills.

The students are aged between 14 and 16-years-old.

The students were welcomed at a ceremony in Methven with tertiary education, skills and employment minister Steven Joyce before meeting their homestay families.

During their time in Canterbury they will stay with host families while they attend school and learn more about the culture as well as extending their English language skills.

Kathy Paterson said it was exciting for the school to be accepted in the programme.

“We’re excited to have this opportunity. We are hugely supportive of having international students,” said Mrs Paterson.

Lincoln High School’s five Korean students started last week with an introduction to the school before meeting their fellow classmates.

The students have been able to choose their own classes to take while they study.

Promoting sport aim of activities day ARCHERY, SOFTBALL and learning to hula-hoop are on the cards at the upcoming Have a Go Day. These activities are part of the event organised by the district council to encourage residents from around Selwyn to take part in trying over 20 different sports..

The district council has organised the day to promote sport and community groups.

District council recreation adviser Dave Tippett said the event was popular last year.

More than 2000 people went along.

Rolleston Library will also be giving lessons in how to use technology resources and training courses.

Take a cruise on the smartest

BY ANY measure, it’s a colossus and it’s coming to a port near you. After all, this is a ship that cracks 19,900 eggs a day in its main kitchen.

Fresh from the inaugural sailing from its European shipyards via the Middle East to Asia, I’ve just spent three night’s aboard Ovation of a Seas on a taster cruise out of Singapore.

New car smell is a knock-out fragrance, but new mega-ship smell kept my nostrils partying for 72 hours. So just how big is this billion dollar behemoth?

It may not be the most salubrious frame of reference, but she weighs in at four times the tonnage of Titanic. She’s three and half rugby fields long. One and a half laps around the running track clocks up a kilometre.

Catering to 4900 passengers and boasting 1300 crew, she towers 15 stories.

Currently ranked as the fourth-equal largest cruise ship in the world (Royal Caribbean clean sweeps the top five), this latest entrant to the company’s Quantum Class of vessels is also considered the smartest ship at sea.

Compass programme of activities, there’s a conspicuous absence of paper – a very good thing given passenger loading.

treatments. You can also download the Royal IQ app, which doesn’t require paid for WiFi to operate, to make bookings and build your custom calendar, on your own device.

Speaking of WiFi, Royal Caribbean reputedly offers the speediest service at sea. I despise WiFi

charges, and Royal Caribbean’s web packages start at a pesky US$13 a day – but at least the service is robust and Roadrunner-fast.

The design elements and contemporary art works throughout the vessel ooze class, comparable to the fresh, crisp and elegant

interiors of a new build, five-star hotel. Royal Caribbean whips up much buzz over its inventive prowess to its active leisure and entertainment offerings like North Star, the glass capsule that soars 90m above and to the side of the ship, and Flowrider, the virtual surfing innovation.

But the newest toy is Ripcord by iFLY – the world’s first freefalling skydive simulator at sea.

Previously disgracing myself on Flowrider, I was determined to make a better fist of virtual skydiving. After being suited up and given a basic skills briefing, you’re encased within a billowing glass tube, with a gargantuan vertical fan (covered by a grill) blasting air up at you at 160km/h.

Thrust airborne, I felt like a levitating monk. And if you’ve studiously followed the briefing, astutely assuming the optimum body positions, you’ll soar like an eagle. But you certainly feel battered by the wind force.

After this unexpected full body exfoliation, I saw no need to book a spa treatment or massage. iFLY is an energising bodybashing thriller. The entertaining swirl of sensory thrills continue at Seaplex, which is like a minitheme park.

ship at sea Royal Caribbean’s bells and whistles are all geared at courting the family market, although there were plenty of seniors aboard having a whale of a time. At night, I sampled Two70, the futuristic entertainment venue which has revolutionised the typical bigshow affair at sea.

The multi-storey glass-panelled back end of the ship transforms into a sweeping screen for projections, while six flat-screen rhythmic robots, called roboscreens, rev up the illumination magic even more.

Studded with high-tech wiz-

ardry, the multi-dimensional live shows on Ovation of the Seas would have to be the best I’ve ever seen, on a cruise. Robotic technology has also invented mixology, with Royal Caribbean’s Bionic Bar. Order up a cocktail on the bar’s iPad and watch the robotic mixologists make it and shake it.

When it comes to libations, I far prefer chatting to bar staff but for pure gimmickry, the Bionic Bar is a good for a giggle.

Prior to boarding, I had apocalyptic dreams about how hideous feeding 5000 people, at the same time, might look. The traditional

notion of the main dining room has been unceremoniously axed on Ovation, replaced with five complimentary and distinct main restaurants.

They form part of the ship’s full culinary arsenal, serving up an unrivalled 18 separate dining venues. I sampled some the ship’s signature restaurants, like Izumi, Wonderland and Jamie’s Italian, which were truly exceptional.

Baking perfection is no piece of cake Cakes by Anna owner Anna Worthington

By Gabrielle Stuart IT WAS cake perfection: Three layers baked, iced and decorated, ready for a wedding that afternoon – until Anna Worthington dropped it.

As a new business-owner, looking down at the mess that was the once perfect cake she had spent hours crafting, she said it was one of her lowest points.

But also it taught her perspective, she said.

She was able to pull herself together and create a new cake in just three hours, and the bride and groom never learned about the disaster, she said.

“I used to lose sleep over making wedding cakes. But now I think even in the worst case scenario, if I was to walk into the reception and drop the cake in front of them, it would have to be pretty bad to completely ruin their wedding.”

It was the same attitude that gave her the courage to quit her job to start her own cake-making business, Cakes by Anna.

She grew up in Christchurch, but left the city as a teenager to

do a fine arts degree in Auckland.

She went overseas after she graduated, and travelled around Europe for more than a year.

There, she put her hand up for whatever work she could find, and discovered she really enjoyed cooking and baking.

She was also inspired by the food and culture around community markets there, she said.

She returned to Christchurch in 2012, not planning to stay for long, but said she was inspired by what was happening in the city.

“Growing up I didn’t have a big attachment to Christchurch.

It felt it wasn’t exciting enough for me. But coming back I was meeting really interesting people, and it felt like a fresh start.”

She began working in a cafe, but on the side began developing her own business idea, selling cakes at the Christchurch Farmers Market in Riccarton.

She said a lot of cakes being sold at the time were very sweet and covered in fondant, and she wanted to do something different.

Her goal was to use as many natural and local ingredients as she could, and always experi-

ment – pulling together flavour combinations like gin, lime and coconut or her most popular pear, date and salted caramel cakes.

She began baking cakes after work in her mother’s kitchen, and selling them each weekend, but she said the business grew fast.

“I was working crazy hours, from 6am to 2pm at the cafe in the kitchen, and once I was finished there I would go and do baking until late. After about six months doing both jobs I totally burnt out.”

At that point she quit her job to start baking full-time.

Although it was a big step, she decided she had nothing to lose.

“After I quit the job I realised I had so much more time to put effort into it and really research recipes, and instead of being tired all the time I was really enjoying it.”

She now has one employee, and works form a commercial kitchen in Linwood.

Although she has enough work from orders from local cafes and events to keep the business going, she still plans to stick to her roots and keep her market stall running each week.

HOMEGROWN: Cakes By Anna started as a small stall at the Riccarton House market, but Anna Worthington now works from a commercial kitchen and has a growing customer base.

Plant silverbeet in stages for constant supply

By Tod Palenski SPINACH AND silverbeet are the perfect space fillers in a winter vege garden.

Plant them in between your larger and longer growing vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower and they’ll be finished with the space before its needed.

They’re both full of vitamins, are perfect additions to a wide variety of dishes and, my favourite, you can pick the leaves off the plants as they reach the size you desire.

Once you’ve got your seedlings you need to find a spot to plant them. Spinach likes full sun and well-fertilised soil.

And silverbeet likes well-drained soil – which, actually makes it really good for planting in pots.

Before you start gardening it pays to mix into the soil some compost or a good general fertiliser like nitrophoska blue.

Then simply plant your seedlings around 20cm apart from each other.

Remember, if you’ve planted (or are planning to grow) longer growing vegetables, like any members of the brassica family, plant your silverbeet and spinach seedlings in the rows in between.

Both of these tasty veges are also enjoyed by slugs and snails so keep an eye out for these slimy pests.

Depending on the condition of your soil your space filling plants will be ready to harvest in around eight to 12 weeks. If your soil is well composted and free-draining you’ll be looking at more like eight weeks.

And remember if you want a constant supply of beet and spinach – stagger your planting (plant more every couple of weeks).

HEALTHY: Silverbeet and spinach like full sun and well-drained soil.

Control pests with winter spraying THE BEST antidote to a pest and disease-ridden spring garden is thorough winter spraying.

Nothing toxic is required — simply give plants a good dowsing of copper spray, followed a week later by an application of spraying oil. Both of these are regarded as organic.

Repeat three times over the winter months to kill both overwintering insect eggs and disease spores. It’s especially important to spray fruit trees (including citrus), roses and other deciduous plants, as well as any plants badly infested with

insect pests or disease last summer.

In fact, you should spray the entire garden, but wait for any winter-flowering plants to finish blooming before you begin.

Garden pests lurk in the most unexpected places.

Check the undersides of leaves for scale insects, and leaf sheaths and stems for mealybug and scale.

Look for silvering of leaves on evergreen shrubs and trees including rhododendrons, camellias and pieris. This silvering indicates the presence of thrips.

Spray oil to clean these up and reduce their numbers for spring. Collect diseased fallen leaves and place in the rubbish bin (not the organics bin).

Spray the ground around infected plants with copper spray to help kill disease spores.

Winter-hardy weeds can overrun the garden, making control in spring a nightmare. Spray with fast-acting glyphosate or dig out hard-to-kill weeds such as dock. Once weeding is done, fork compost through soil and mulch with a 10cm layer of fine bark or pea straw.

You will notice that your camellias have been blooming through the last months. Some varieties will have stopped blooming now, but some are still in flower. The end of winter is a great time to give them a feed of fertiliser, add some mulch and give them a wee rim. To feed them, use Intelligro Azalea, Camellia and Rhododendron fertiliser. They don’t require a lot, as this can cause more harm than good, so make sure you follow the application instructions are on the container.

If you are unsure of anything, you can ask our friendly team if you have any further questions. A layer of our Organic Compost is also a great option to apply to your soil. Just remember to leave a ring around the base of your plant. This is especially important if you find that your soil is very heavy and needs something to improve drainage. It will also help to retain moisture in the soil, which will decrease the chances of drought-stress. Pruning to keep them in a tidy shape is recommended.

Make sure that your secateurs are sharp so you get a clean cut. Pruning will also encourage new growth, so it definitely has its benefits. These are the main things to think about with your camellias. They are pretty care-free plants that will produce beautiful blooms through the wintery days. A CAMARO TO DRIVE AND ENJOY Jason had been scrolling TradeMe, looking for a project car to restore when he saw a 1979 Chevrolet Camaro advertised for sale. The car looked interesting and being an american left-hand drive, it had more appeal for him than a more basic model of car so he thought it would be a good project.

“The older 60s Camaros have been very popular which has priced them out of the range for many hobbyists. The 1970 to 1981 second generation Camaro models are more affordable, which might explain why they’ve grown in popularity,” suggests Jason.

When Jason purchased the Camaro, he said its condition was below average and while the paintwork had been re-sprayed, closer inspection showed that it was in poor condition.

The Camaro was fitted with the basic 305 cubic inch engine, which while more economical to run had in Jason’s words, no grunt so this was replaced with a 383 engine.

“It was typical of the era,” explains Jason. “Most american models were under-powered at the time to save on fuel consumption.”

Jason started with a brand new roller cam block and contracted an engine builder, engine Reconditioning services in Tai Tapu to build the engine, which he then installed.

The interior had what Jason described as a rather unattractive tacky grey interior so this was changed to black vinyl and after-market non genuine seats along with steering wheel were added.

The Camaro is a three speed Th (turbo) 350 automatic, two-door, four-seater coupe and Jason has added a replica of an L88 hood scoop, along with chrome 17 inch wheels on the front and 18 inch wheels on the back to give the car a more staggered muscle car look.

Jason says that it is a bit of a petrol guzzler due to the new motor though fun to drive and reasonably comfortable so a great weekend cruiser. he has taken the Camaro to the Ruapuna drag strip for a couple of social events, where it achieved 13.7 for the quarter mile.

“It was a lot of fun and good to see what the car would do,” adds Jason who says the restoration took over five years. he has kept no record of the cost of restoring the car, with repairs and modifications carried out as money allowed.

The car was able to be driven for most of that time, except for the last year when the car was painted a dark metallic blue colour.

Jason now has the 1979 Chevrolet Camaro the way he wants it.

“It’s what I always wanted but couldn’t afford to go out and buy brand new. While it’s been a roller coaster ride with ups, downs and some hurdles along the way, I really love it,” says Jason who confesses to having a feeling of satisfaction now that the car is finished.

“I’m in no hurry to restore another car though I won’t rule it out. If I get bored again, then I’m likely to look for another project.”

SAFE MOTORING IS A DELIBERATE ACT driving on country roads is dangerous. high speed accidents incur a higher mortality rate and catastrophic injuries leaving in their aftermath, grief for loved ones.

“Improving roads, policing and more sophisticated vehicles have played a small part in road safety, however the biggest single cause of road accidents is driver error” says selwyn district Councillor, Jeff bland.

The higher number of road deaths ever recorded was 843 in 1973, a much higher figure than recent years which suggests that road initiatives have had some impact and between 2011 and 2014, there were the least number of deaths recorded on new Zealand roads. The lowest was 253 in 2013 and the highest 308 in 2012. The authorities say this figure is still too high and most people would agree.

Injuries caused by road accidents have been massively higher. In 2014, 11,219 people were injured with a proportion having lasting effect on individuals and families, changing their lives forever.

It is true, that the number of cars on the road has risen and the percentage of road deaths to cars has declined, dropping from 23.1% in 1986 to 6.5% in 2014. however, recent figures show that the toll is increasing again suggesting that road safety messages are no longer effective.

The road toll has fluctuated over the last five years but this year’s figures have climbed

with 174 deaths to July 2016, compared to 165 at the same time last year.

Jeff puts this down to a blaze, cavalier attitude and lack of responsibility or respect for others on the road. “during my career in the police, I attended thousands of road accidents. Most drivers blamed the vehicle or another driver and couldn’t see that they may have made a mistake,” explains Jeff. “People feel insulated in their cars and don’t think about driving carefully or to the conditions.”

Part of the problem he says, is a purveying opinion that we are better drivers yet it only takes a moment’s inattention or one foolish act for an accident to occur on the road. When we put our foot down on the accelerator we have a lethal weapon under our control.

“We’re often different people, even aggressive behind the wheel of a car,” adds Jeff. “We need to start taking personal responsibility on the roads and stop making excuses as to why crashes occur. Road accidents and deaths affect every person in this country in one way or other. bringing the road toll down will benefit us all.”

Baby Holden provides a Spark

By Ross Kiddie THE UNDER $20,000 segment of the new car market has shown some resurgence in recent years.

In recent decades it was an area where manufacturers didn’t place a big emphasis on – the margins were small and finding product wasn’t always easy.

But being able to buy a new car at the same price as something pre-owned certainly has appeal, and there’s now a wealth of hatchbacks available here fresh from Asia – especially China, Japan and South Korea.

One of the latter is Holden’s Barina Spark, which has been quite successful for GM Holden, with a new-generation model just landing.

It arrives here in three variants starting at $16,490 for a manual LS variant (automatic $17,990), while an LT model tops out at $19,990 as tested.

Although the Barina Spark shares its name, it is engineered a little differently to Barina; the Spark gets a 1.4-litre engine and continuously variable transmission, as opposed to a 1.6-litre unit and six-speed auto, and it sits on a floorpan with wheelbase and track just a little smaller than Barina.

Nevertheless, the Spark appeals

in other ways, it is most certainly designed to capture the imagination of the young, those buyers who want something new, as well as being trendy and funky. It comes with vivid colour schemes and an interior package which is bright and breezy, yet will also lure those from all generations who don’t have a big budget. The test car often captured attention, and not just from the younger set.

Standard fitment on the high grade model is respectable given its price point. Major items include single-zone air conditioning, leather-like trim, keyless entry and ignition, electric windows all round, and Holden’s sophisticated MyLink infotainment system.

The latter has been upgraded to include Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the latter interacts with Apple product through a central dash panel screen. All of the mobile functions are available from there along with navigation and music accessibility.

The Spark is also easy on fuel.

Holden claim an Australian Design Rules combined average figure of 5.5-litres per 100km (51mpg). The fuel usage readout was constantly listing around 6.2l/00km (46mpg) with 5l/100km (56mpg) available at a

Consequently, it’s no powerhouse, and this is reflected in slowish acceleration times – 11.2sec to make 100km/h from a standstill and 7sec to reach 120km/h from 80km/h.

Spark is not here to scorch along, but to provide economical and comfortable travel like small cars are meant to do.

However, you can stir the little engine up if you wish, the seamless gearing of CVT allows access to the upper rev band providing the sensation of sporty motion.

One of the big surprises is the Spark’s handling and feel from behind the wheel. A lot of that has to do with the development work Holden has done in Australia for down under conditions. The steering and suspension calibration has been tuned for the type of roads we have

There are opportunities too, for changes to the design such as increasing the size of the living area by pushing out a wall or shifting a doorway as with bedroom four that might become an ideal study and Milestone see their plans as a starting point for creating a home that suits the needs of those who live there.

This home hints at affordability rather than displaying it openly yet there is a

feeling of homeliness and comfort while providing all that is needed in a modern home.

The house has an attractive street presence. Its combination of cladding, Rockcote plaster-finish with Palliside weatherboard and schist accents and small hardwood deck at the front door, harmonise well to create a favourable impression. The Corona Shake satin finish roof with a 25 degree slope is also a contrast to the long-run roofing iron often seen. All suggest ways to add a touch of class without blowing the budget.

There is also plenty of patio area for outdoor living and opportunity to add more areas to take account of sun and wind direction.

Built by Milestone Homes Canterbury, this is an appealing house that is suitable for a family, couple without children in the nest, or person living alone.

Incorporating show homes in your planning process There are many things to think about when you’re considering building a new home.

BROWSIng SHOW homes is a fantastic way to get you thinking about practicalities, needs, aesthetics and your wish list! Here are a few consideration’s to help spark your planning process.

• What is your exterior style? What kind of homes do you like? Look around and take a mental note of what you are drawn to most.

All water use has environmental impacts.

Making water conservation decisions today helps ensure that there will be ample supplies for the next generation and sets habits that have good long-term economic benefits in metered areas.

Old hot water heaters can lose up to 15 per cent of total hot water energy cost, but you can redress that through wrapping the cylinder effectively. uninsulated hot water pipes also rob the water of heat before it reaches its destination.

Pipe insulation is inexpensive and effective in keeping water hot all the way to the tap. An on demand hot water switch circulates water in the pipes until it is hot, saving power and water, and increasing your comfort. Old toilet cisterns are particularly wasteful of water. Modern ones use significantly less.

Saving electricity can be as simple as changing the kind of light bulb you’re using. Compact fluorescent light bulbs are more expensive, but they use one quarter the electricity of an incandescent bulb and last 10 times as long. Likewise, appliances have become much more energy efficient.

Look for their energy rating

when buying a new fridge or freezer.

Insulation is an excellent investment all round, so consider increasing the amount of insulation throughout the house if you’re planning to build or while you’re renovating. It will pay for itself in just a few years and you’ll be more comfortable.

It’s common sense to take advantage of the heat from the sun whenever possible.

Passive solar design, orienting windows to the north with overhangs, is a no-cost option that can reduce heating costs by 20 to 30 per cent.

Passive cooling uses prevailing breezes, shading and natural plantings to keep the home cool all summer long without air conditioning.

Active solar hot water heating is a cost-effective alternative to conventional hot water heating that can pay for itself in as few as even years. Advances in technology have improved efficiency and durability of systems considerably.

A little preliminary thought on how your new home or addition can improve the way you live, long term, pays for itself very quickly.
