District pool expansion on cards By Tom Doudney
LIVE COMEDY: Some of New Zealand’s leading comedians, including Jeremy Corbett (left), Ben Hurley (top) and Tom Furniss are coming to Lincoln.
Top comedy comes to Lincoln By Tom Doudney SEVERAL OF the country’s top comedians are set to perform at the Lincoln Event Centre in October. The Live in Lincoln event will feature Jeremy Corbett, host TV3’s Seven Days, along with Ben Hurley, Justine Smith and Tom Furniss. Lincoln resident and promoter David Parlane organised the show – the first of several events
he hopes to bring to the town. Mr Parlane said he had known Corbett when they were both working in radio in Palmerston North in the 1980s. “He was my first port of call to be honest, so I contacted him and said ‘hey, how about we do something like this comedy night?’” he said. “All of a sudden, within probably a week and a half, we had got four of the best comedians in New Zealand coming to
Lincoln.” Mr Parlane said there was a need for more activities and events in Lincoln. “So this is basically the first of more to come. We have got a great facility down at the event centre which can hold 1000 people.” Doors will open at 6pm, with the show starting at 7pm. •Tickets can be bought from The Famous Grouse Hotel or by emailing lincolnticketsnz@ gmail.com
AN EXTENSION of the Selwyn Aquatic Centre or a new pool in Lincoln could be on the cards – and residents may decide which one gets the go ahead. The district council is asking residents to weigh in on Selwyn’s current and future aquatic facility needs by completing a survey. Mayor Kelvin Coe said the Selwyn Aquatic Centre in Rolleston was well-used and learn to swim classes were reaching capacity. An extension of that facility, or a new facility in Lincoln, possibly in partnership with Lincoln University, could provide the additional space needed. “I know there was quite strong support from the Lincoln people for something in that part of the ward,” Mr Coe said. “I think we need to have a look at the option for Lincoln
University. Whether they are in a position to look at it at this stage I’m not sure, but I think we should ask the question.” But ultimately, the district council wanted to hear what the public wanted, Mr Coe said. “We will be guided by the survey results.” A Lincoln University spokesman confirmed the university was in discussions with the district council regarding the current and future needs for high-quality sports facilities in the region. “As the university looks at its campus infrastructure, there is a desire to work in with the council to optimise the use of land and the facilities available to the community,” the spokesman said. Lincoln Community Committee chairwoman Ivy Harper said it would be nice to have a public pool in Lincoln. •Turn to page 3
