Gun thefts worry police By Andrew King HIGH CALIBRE rifles, shotguns and pistols, stolen from properties in the Selwyn district, have police concerned. More than 20 guns have been stolen between June 10-15 from properties in Greenpark and Leeston, including high calibre hunting rifles. Detective Karen Simmons said a number of firearms have been
taken in separate burglaries in the area. On Wednesday, a property on Brookside & Irwell Rd was broken into and a number of guns were taken, including a .303 and .270 rifle, along with a couple of shotguns. Eighteen firearms and two vehicles were stolen from a Greenpark address on Friday 10 June. Both vehicles stolen were found
burnt out. In both firearm thefts, the weapons were secured in cabinets. The Selwyn Times understands another burglary at the Milton St Challenge petrol station in Somerfield could be linked with the Greenpark burglary. On the same day as the Greenpark burglary, a property was broken into on Selwyn Lake Rd

Detective Simmons said at this stage, there is no link between the four burglaries, but they are keeping an open mind. Leeston Constable Herb Inwood said it does not appear the properties had been targeted because they had weapons. Police want any information
in regard to people unlawfully in possession of firearms or gun safes that have been dumped in the area. Anyone with information should phone the police on 363 7400 or anonymously on 0800 crimestoppers. Constable Inwood said the serial numbers of weapons should be recorded to help police identify recovered firearms.
