Brownlee goes silent on anchor projects

Panthers purr for supporters CHRISTCHURCH Boys’ High School is often referred to as a rugby union factory, but it turned into a training ground for a different code yesterday. Sydney’s Penrith Panthers NRL rugby league team had their first training session at the school yesterday morning, ahead of their match against the Vodafone Warriors at AMI Stadium on Saturday. The Panthers have moved their home games against the Warriors to Christchurch for the next four years in partnership with the city council to create a long-term

relationship with the city. Both the Panthers and Warriors are visiting schools during the lead-up to the clash, and tomorrow the Warriors will visit children at Ronald McDonald House. The match is expected to be a sellout. Among those who made it to CBHS to watch training was eight-year-old Cashious-Max McGregor from Bromley School, who got the chance to meet Panthers hooker James Segeyaro. CBHS year 13’s Tia Hunt, a former leaguie now playing union got a chance to meet midfielder

Dallin Watene-Zelezniak. “He seemed really down to earth, he asked me a bit about my footy. He just said stick at it and keep going. “I think all 1300 students came out to watch and got a couple of photos. It was really good to have them here on our new grounds,â€? he said. • The Panthers’ visit has also caught the attention of Australia’s The Footy Show, with presenter Beau Ryan filming Beau Knows Christchurch tomorrow to feature on the show.

„„ By Gabrielle Stuart COMPLETION dates for the city’s major anchor projects became even more unclear yesterday when Gerry Brownlee declared he would not reveal timelines. The Greater Christchurch Regeneration minister said revealing when projects like the convention centre and Metro Sports Facility would be completed would compromise commercial negotiations. Labour’s Canterbury spokeswoman Megan Woods said Mr Brownlee’s comments were “an increasingly thin excuse for a lack of progress in the city. “Telling the people of Christchurch when they can expect something to be built in their central city shouldn’t be a closely guarded secret. Sure the details of the money should, it’s in none of our interests that the Government compromise getting the best deal that it can get, but it’s just nonsense to say that the timelines around it are compromising, she said. Mr Brownlee has been under fire for the delay after a Treasury report said the Government had spent $154 million less than promised in Christchurch in the past year. That was put down to delays to anchor projects.

starnews.co.nz

Mr Brownlee told Radio New Zealand yesterday that he would not give a public deadline for the projects. “Time frames have dogged us all the way through the effort to initially recover and now regenerate Christchurch, because as soon as you have a timeline on something and a finite date for something you give away a degree of advantage in any negotiation situation.â€? A spokeswoman for Mr Brownlee told The Star yesterday the minister stood by his comments. But he refused to say if there were current specific deadlines for anchor projects which were being kept secret. Mayor Lianne Dalziel said she was not surprised by Mr Brownlee’s comments. She believed the time frames should be public. In January last year, the convention centre construction scheduled to start within a few months and be complete by the end of 2017, with the Metro Sports Facility by the end of 2018. But in May the convention centre was delayed until late 2018, and the Metro Sports Facility, 2020. By the end of the year the Government was refusing to say when the convention centre might be built. • Brownlee, Woods’ columns, pages 14-15
