TRAIN TRAGEDY Rosemary MarquetVan Hout and the railway line in Belfast, where she was hit by a train.

Family farewells mum on her birthday By Grant Bryant

ROSEMARY Marquet-Van Hout should have been celebrating her 53rd birthday today with her family. But husband Tony and their children Nathaniel, 19, and Samuel, 17, will instead be grieving at her funeral. Mrs Marquet-Van Hout was tragically killed when she was struck by a train near the Factory Rd crossing in Belfast about 11pm last Wednesday night.

WEATHER

“The coming months should have been filled with celebrations – cutting her birthday cake and our 20-year wedding anniversary, but instead we will be burying her,” Mr Marquet-Van Hout told The Star yesterday. “It would have been our 20year wedding anniversary in February, and in March we had a trip to Melbourne planned to celebrate that.” The death had hit sons Samuel and Nathaniel hard. “The boys are coping in their

own way – taking the dog for a run or finding comfort in the arms of a girlfriend – luckily they’ve got good support from friends and family.” Mrs Marquet-Van Hout’s life had been hard. “She was under mental health care. She had been through a lot, but she was the type of person who would’ve given the shirt off her back if anyone needed it. She really cared about people. She left a lot of Christmas presents

underneath the tree that will be given to people from her. She will be very sadly missed.” The family were awaiting the coroner’s report into her death. “What exactly happened is all very hard to say, and until we get the coroner’s report we won’t know. The railway tracks at Factory Rd, are not far from where we live, and I got woken up by a whole lot of police and ambulance sirens, which were obviously on the way there.”

While the family was reluctant to draw conclusions on the exact circumstance of the death, Mr Marquet-Van Hout was certain of one aspect in the scenario. “I just feel really sorry for the train driver, that must be a really hard thing to go through. I know a train driver who has been through the same thing and I wouldn’t wish that on anyone.” Mrs Marquet-Van Hout’s funeral will be held at the Westpark Chapel, Burnside.

Woman used cannabis for quake injury By Emma-Jane McLennan

A WOMAN who was caught growing cannabis says it was used as pain relief for her quake injuries.

Bonnie Huhana Collins, 56, of Lawrence, was sentenced to three months’ community detention in the Dunedin District Court this week, for cultivating and being in possession of the class C drug. Collins was working at Hotel So, on Cashel St, when she was jolted off her chair in the earthquakes, hurting her neck, shoulder and elbow. “I damaged my ulnar nerve [in my elbow] so I’ve had two operations already and I’m waiting for an MRI. I’m in constant pain, so I was solving that problem,” she The Star yesterday.

Collins moved to Lawrence 14 months ago, saying she was “traumatised” by the earthquakes. She suffers post-traumatic stress disorder: “I can’t go into high buildings, lifts or stairs, I can’t drive anymore. I was quite brave before the earthquakes but now I’m really anxious.” Collins (right) had been taking codeine and tramadol for the pain when she was offered cannabis by a friend. “It did help, so that’s when I started buying it.” Collins was spending around $100 a week on the habit, when she moved to Lawrence and decided to grow her own: “I kept it at a pretty

good limit, but it was getting expensive,” she said. Police officers who executed an unrelated search warrant at Collins’ house in Lawrence found a concealed workshop containing a cannabisgrowing operation. One of the rooms was a nursery containing eight seedlings, another contained 14 semimature plants and a third contained 20 plants. There was 77g of cannabis in the house. Collins told Judge Michael Turner during sentencing that it was the second crop she’d grown, and she hadn’t expected it to grow as well as it did. Judge Turner said there was no

evidence she was looking to supply the drug. He also described the operation as “significant” and noted there were extractor fans and lights to assist growing. While Collins says she is upset she can no longer grow cannabis, she has made a lot of friends since the court case: “I didn’t know many people in Lawrence but now I do. It’s amazing I’ve got so many more friends now that I’ve been in court, it’s amazing. Even old people are supporting me.” Since the cannabis-growing operation was shut down, Collins has doubled the pills she takes for pain relief: “I’m taking tramadol four times a day. I may be in pain for the rest of my life – cannabis needs to be decriminalised.”

23 deg C Xmas Day expected CHRISTCHURCH can look forward to fine Christmas and Boxing Days with warm temperatures forecast. The temperature high is expected to be 23 deg C for both days while the overnight lows will be between nine and 10 deg C.

MetService meteorologist Claire Flynn said a ridge of high pressure is expected to build across the country for the festive days. There may be a few clouds in the morning before the skies clear into fine weather.

Call to use water wisely

EXCITING: A concept image of what the Christchurch Adventure Park will look like.

$2m for bike park being matched THE CITY council’s $2 million contribution to a new adventure park in Cashmere Forest has been matched by NewUrban Group. The Christchurch Adventure Park will be built on land between Dyers Pass, Worsleys and Summit Rds. NewUrban Group, which is investing in the project through its partnership with Wang Jianping of Beijing-based development and construction company Huadu International Group will also put $2 million into the project. Mr Wang said NewUrban Group is delighted to work with the city council to achieve such a positive community outcome. “We are long-term investors in Christchurch and want to be actively engaged in the fabric of the city’s development,” he said. The $20 million park will have cycle trails, accessed via a chairlift that, at 1.8km long and climbing 430 vertical metres, will be the longest in the Southern Hemisphere. It will also include outdoor rock-climbing and a zip-line, with

scope for a Mountain Coaster – a type of gravity-powered rollercoaster that follows the contours of the hills – in a second stage of development. The park will be developed by leisure development company Select Evolution. It says the park will see yearround tourist activity with an economic benefit to Canterbury of more than $150 million a year. It is hoped the first stage of the Christchurch Adventure Park will be completed by the end of 2016. City councillor Tim Scandrett (right) said the park would benefit the whole of Christchurch, not just the local area. “Christchurch Adventure Park will be the biggest and best of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, and will help anchor and re-establish Christchurch as a destination,” he said. “This is a very generous matching of the council’s contribution by

NewUrban Group that means the park is fully-funded straight out of the gate, and that construction can begin almost immediately in February 2016.” Development Christchurch Limited will act as an investment partner on behalf of the city council, with $2 million transferred from Christchurch City Holdings Ltd to DCL for investment in the project, which ensures rates will remain unaffected. An additional $2 million will come from the development partnership with NewUrban Group. Mayor Lianne Dalziel said the idea had been generating excitement from Australia to the United States, to China. “The concept of a beautiful bicycle park just 17 minutes’ cycle from the central city is the sort that inspires plenty of international visitors and thrill-seekers, and this development will draw a lot of the tourist market who all-too-often skip straight from Auckland to Queenstown for their adventuring.”

THE CITY council is warning that excessive water use could lead to reduced water pressure over the summer period. Weather patterns stemming from the El Nino storm off the coast of South America have brought about hot conditions which has already seen the city’s water supply put under pressure this year. When water usage gets beyond a certain point, pump stations begin to have trouble refilling their reservoirs overnight after periods of heavy daytime usage. City council waste unit manager Tim Joyce said in November and December last year that level was exceeded only once, but since the beginning of November this

year the level has already been exceeded 10 times. Mr Joyce said: “This is really concerning and if it continues, people in some areas of Christchurch will notice reduced water pressure.” Peak water consumption times tend to be in the evening, when people get home from work and turn on a sprinkler. Instead the council has asked that they do this either before 6am or after 9pm. Mr Joyce said the city council is not considering water restrictions if water is used responsibly. Pioneer leisure pool to undergo quake repairs

THE LEISURE pool at Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre will be closed from Monday, January 4-29 for earthquake repairs. Pioneer’s lap pool and teach pool will remain open for swimmers, with the teaching pool to be made available for casual leisure use by the public. The facility’s spa, sauna and steam room will also be closed from January 4-29 for repairs and refurbishments. The urgent repairs to the leisure pool will include replacement of damaged and displaced ceramic pool tiles and expansion joints, plus other remedial work that can be done during this period. “Due to the effects of the earthquakes, a number of ceramic tiles are coming loose from the leisure pool tank below the waterline,”

says John Filsell, city council recreation and sports unit manager. “We’ve previously tried to fix the problem with temporary repairs, but these haven’t been successful and we still have tiles coming loose, which is a health and safety issue for swimmers that needs to be addressed immediately. We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience, but encourage people to make use of the city council’s outdoor pools, which only come into action in the summer and really boost the options for those who want to take a dip,” Mr Filsell says. Lane swimmers will be able to continue using the five-lane, 25m pool. The Learn to Swim programme will not be affected by the closure, with classes resuming on Monday, February 1.

The street: A home away

City Mission’s big meal welcomes all

IN THE SPIRIT: Brian Tyler hoped to be able to give this Christmas, sharing the money people gave him with other people living on the streets. PHOTOS: GABRIELLE STUART

VOLUNTEERS have been working since August to organise the Christchurch City Mission Christmas Lunch, where more than 600 people are expected this year. They’re planning a full Christmas menu – with lamb, ham, vegetables and potato salad for a first course, followed by pavlova, brandy snaps, mince pies and plum pudding. City Missioner Michael Gorman said many volunteers would start at 7am on Christmas Day, to get the food ready in time. He said more than 200 volunteers were needed to bring it together, but there were always many people willing to help. The guests came for a variety of reasons, he said. “Some are homeless. Some just want to be with other people at Christmas, or it can be because they just don’t have the cooking skills. There are people who are lonely. We always say if you want to come then you should, that’s the only criteria.” He said some people the City Mission worked with had difficulty mixing with other people socially, but he had never found it an issue at the lunch. The lunch will be held at Christchurch East School on Gloucester St, from noon.

For most people, Christmas is a time for family, for good food and for giving. For those living on the streets, Christmas dinner is not likely to look like much – but the things they are hoping for this Christmas are the same. Gabrielle Stuart reports FOR HOMELESS “streetie” Brian Tyler, this Christmas will be just another day on the street. He plans to spend it in his usual spot on Colombo St, near South City. “If I had a choice I’d go home and see my dad in Dunedin, but I don’t have the finances, and he wouldn’t want to see me. He disowned me years ago.” There will be no Christmas tree, wrapped presents or a big dinner on Friday – but that doesn’t mean there’s no Christmas spirit. Christmas on the street could still be a special time, he said. “People are more chirpy, more exuberant, and they’re more forgiving and understanding,” he said. He is well-spoken, and betterdressed than many of the other streeties – he said he made an effort to stay tidy. Although he won’t be spending the day with his biological family, there are a group of about a dozen streeties who “look out for each other”. “I’ve been out here since I was 11-years-

old, the streets have become my home. This is my family now,” he said. He said many homeless didn’t want to beg on the street, because they were worried about the reaction they would get from people. He planned to share with them the money people gave to him – “making money for the ones who can’t”, he said. “The joy people get is from giving not receiving, so if I can give to someone and make their day better that’s my Christmas. It’s about giving something no matter the value, so people leave with that big smile.” Gifts between the streeties were often things like clothing, or money for new shoes, he said. The Christchurch City Mission, Help for the Homeless and several church groups organise Christmas events for people who are homeless or struggling. He usually avoided the organised events, because of the other people who went. “I used to go to them, but the street kids ruin it for everybody. If you have a barbecue it’s always the women and children that go first, then the men.

Then there are fights.” He said Christmas had been a special time when he was a child, and he had many good memories. “My mum was really great, we’d do things together. She’d invite her friends, I’d invite my friends. We’d have a completely awesome Christmas. “My best Christmas ever I was nine, and I invited my whole school to have Christmas at my

We had a park out the back, so we put up some tables and everyone came around.” He said he would like to get off the street, but he struggled to stay in a house or pay regular bills. “A house would be nice, a job would be nicer. But no one wants to hire me because of my criminal history.” For fellow streetie Tepi Amohia, Christmas will be about family – his son, daughter-in-law, and the granddaughter he is expecting in just a few weeks. Mr Irvine said there was no suggestion so far that the fires were linked. The two fires are the latest in destructive arsons since the start of summer. An arson in the sand dunes on Southshore resulted in 65 firefighters and a helicopter being called out, and a separate arson destroyed Image Vault on Ferry Rd, in late November. Two men were separately arrested and appeared in the district Court on arson charges.

Aussie gang member denied entry into city AN AUSTRALIAN Rebels motorcycle gang member’s bid to visit the Christchurch chapter of the club has been thwarted by immigration officials. John Millar, who has no criminal convictions, was held in a jail cell without charge for 12 hours after being refused entry to the country because he is a member of the Rebels. Mr Millar arrived at Christchurch Airport on December 2 where he was handed over to police by immigration officials after customs found a Rebels club vest in his luggage. The 34-year-old, who intended to join a motor-cycle ride with the Christchurch chapter of the Rebels, was transferred to a watch house before being put on a flight back to Brisbane the next day. Immigration NZ told him late last week that his membership of the club led him to being refused entry under section 16 of the Immigration Act. That allows authorities to turn back anyone believed to be likely to commit an offence drawing jail time or pose a threat or risk to security, public order or the public interest. “I’ve done nothing wrong but I’m being punished,” Mr Millar, who has travelled to New Zealand three times in the past 20 months without incident, told The Guardian Australia. “If you were going to do some-

Alleged conman in bid to leave country AN AUSTRALIAN alleged to have conned Christchurch people out of $480,000 is fighting to leave New Zealand. Daniel Kive Albert (above), also known as Daniel Erefor and Daniel Allert, is trying to get an appeal heard this week over the confiscation of his passport. Albert was stopped at Auckland International Airport earlier this month and charged with fraud offences in New Zealand. He reappeared in the Manakau District Court on Friday where he tried to get his passport back, but police successfully opposed the bid. He was remanded on bail to appear again in court in February, but it is expected he will make a High Court bid for his passport this week. Albert is alleged to have conned Christchurch residents

out of $480,000 after running advertisements in newspapers advertising exclusive rights to energy drink vending machines in the South Island. He is accused of showing the alleged victims a website for Laqu Vending Ltd and stating that he would provide all that was needed for the franchise to go ahead, including training in sales, technicians for the machines and setting up a website. The company name was then changed to Specialised Vending Ltd. The victims claim, in total, they handed more than $480,000 to Albert for the machines. Although 17 machines were supplied, they allegedly could not carry out one of their supposed main tasks of monitoring sales in real time.

thing wrong, why would you take your club colours with you?” Mr Millar said a Customs officer had “made a fuss” about the discovery of a Rebels vest in his luggage, which he had brought along with his motor-cycle helmet. “They put me in a cell and I had

no toilet paper, no phone call, no shower, a blanket and a thin little blanket on a concrete floor,” Millar said. “They gave me a little pack of cereal for breakfast.” The incident follows recent Australian government moves to deport residents with New Zealand citizenship on character grounds if they are members of bikie gangs. Immigration NZ confirmed on Saturday night that a man was sent back to Australia under section 16 of the Immigration Act for being a gang member. But they had no further comment to make.

EQC AND THE SIX-YEAR CLAIM LIMITATION PERIOD.

There has been a lot of commentary recently about the length of time EQC customers have to challenge a settlement for a claim made under the EQC Act. EQC’s position is that it does not consider the six-year limitation period runs from the date of each Canterbury earthquake. So for example, there is no 4 September 2016 deadline to bring Court proceedings challenging an EQC claim settlement for damage caused by the 4 September 2010 earthquake. However, time limits can apply to bringing Court proceedings challenging EQC claims settlements at some point after 4 September 2016. Under the Limitation Act 1950 and the Limitation Act 2010, EQC expects that, generally speaking: •

where an EQC claim has already been settled, the six-year time limit for bringing Court proceedings will run from the date EQC settled that claim;

where an EQC claim has not already been settled, the six-year time limit for bringing Court proceedings will start running when EQC settles that claim; or

where a claim is declined, the six-year limitation period will run from the date that EQC declines the claim.

Seek the view of your private insurer if appropriate •

EQC’s position refers only to claims brought under the EQC Act.

how limitation legislation applies to policies provided by private insurers (which are not covered by the EQC Act) may differ and people should talk with their private insurer and potentially their lawyer about their individual claims.

EQC customers may still seek a review •

the limitation legislation applies to Court proceedings and not to EQC’s review of their settlement.

if customers become aware of new information relevant to their claim, they can provide this to EQC for review.

The limitation legislation is technical and EQC’s general view does not constitute legal advice so customers should seek their own advice about how it applies specifically to their own claim(s).

Wines Consumer Tastes to please every palate Just in time for the holiday season, a Consumer NZ panel of wine experts has tested 55 mid-priced New Zealand wines and chosen their top 10 picks. Gabrielle Stuart reports THERE’S NO question that we like our wines. Last year, New Zealanders consumed about 90 million litres of wine – enough for every person to have about three drinks a week. But with so many good wines produced in New Zealand, the range of choices available can be overwhelming. This month, Consumer NZ bought in a panel of wine experts to try a range of affordable wines – most priced under $30, with bubbles all under $45. The judges included wine consultant Sue Davies, wine marketing consultant Laura Saba, winemaker Huw Kinch, wine taster Gary Bowering and wine blogger Elissa Jordan. They tried 40 different still wines and 15 sparkling, rating each and choosing their top picks. • Riesling The Allan Scott Riesling 2014 was both the top rated riesling and the overall top pick across the wines. The judges said it was a sweeter wine, with lime and honey flavours and good acidity. There were four other rieslings in the top picks: Montana Waipara Riesling 2014, Mud House Riesling 2014, Mount Difficulty Roaring Meg Riesling 2014 and The Doctors’ Riesling 2013. Although it did not make the top picks, the judges also recommended the Stoneleigh Riesling 2014, as a drier, thirst-quenching wine which would work well with food. • Rose The panel was looking for a refreshing rose with berry flavours.

CHEERS: The Consumer NZ wine judging panel included wine blogger Elissa Jordan, wine taster Gary Bowering, winemaker Huw Kinch, wine marketing consultant Laura Saba and wine consultant Sue Davies. Esk Valley Rose Merlot 2015 took the top spot, a dry wine with plum, berry and watermelon flavours. Although it did not make their top picks, the judges said Montana East Coast Rose 2014 was also worth a try, as it was a rich textured wine priced at just $9. • Sauvignon blanc Only one standard sauvignon blanc was tasted, the Spy Valley Easy Tiger Sauvignon Blanc 2014. It was praised for its good balance, but did not make the top picks. There were four light or low-alcohol sauvignon blancs tasted, and one of those was top rated – the Wither Hills Early Light Sauvignon Blanc 2014. • Sparkling wines Bubbly is generally priced higher than still wine, and the ones

tested ranged from $12 to $44. But the panel proved a bigger price tag doesn’t always signal quality. Its top picks were all priced at $20 or under: Brancott Estate Brut Cuvee, Oyster Bay Sparkling Cuvee Brut and Deutz Methode Traditionnelle Cuvee Brut. They rated above the Cloudy Bay Pelorus, Quartz Reef Methode Traditionnelle Brut and Nautilus Methode Traditionnelle Cuvee Brut NV, all priced at $30 or higher. • Low alcohol wines With lower drink-driving limits in place this year, drinks with lower alcohol content are becoming more popular. The Consumer NZ judging panel tried five light or lower alcohol sauvignon blanc wines, and three pinot gris.

The Wither Hills Early Light Sauvignon Blanc 2014 was the only light wine they rated fourstar, saying it was fresh and vibrant with a good balance between tropical fruit and acid flavours. The judges liked the light sauvignon blanc more than the light pinot gris wines, which they called underwhelming. Although the alcohol content

in the wines was lower, it was still high when compared with other drinks. Most were about nine per cent alcohol, compared with about 13 per cent in most wines. A standard beer is usually about four to five per cent alcohol, ciders are generally less than five per cent alcohol, and RTDs are usually five to seven per cent.

Margaret Mahy Family Playground now open The thrilling new Margaret Mahy Family Playground is open to Christchurch’s children and their families from 1pm today. The playground is believed to be one of the largest in the Southern Hemisphere and was designed with input from the city’s school children. Kids can play and explore on the double flying fox, the four metre wide slide, the spider climbing areas, the water play area and the story arc featuring tales by Margaret Mahy, Elsie Locke and Ngāi Tahu amongst other things. CERA’s acting Chief Executive John Ombler is extremely pleased that the playground is open in time for the summer holidays. “This exciting new playground will bring children and their families back into the central city. With equipment specially tailored to the site and a design inspired by beloved Christchurch author Margaret Mahy and the Canterbury landscape, there will be a lot of fun to be had.” “There are some other features that will be added progressively in the New Year too, so there is a lot to look forward to in the coming summer months.” “And with a number of food concessions opening in the picnic area, the playground is truly designed to be a family destination over the holidays.” The playground is located in Te Papa Ōtākaro/Avon River Precinct on the block bounded by Manchester, Madras and Armagh streets.

Workers put the finishing touches on the Margaret Mahy Family Playground.

New guides show off Christchurch’s neat places Two exciting new guides are showing young people and children neat places to explore in the city these summer holidays. ‘101 Neat Places and Youth Spaces’ was released back in August and ‘Neat Places for Kids’ launched last Friday. Each guide showcases great spaces to go and hang out in Christchurch so that young people and kids (and their families) never need to be bored. Youth Design Team member Jess Robertson-Wright (17) loved being a part of the project because she got to share her favourite places in the city. “It was great working with other young people and being able to give back. We ran a survey and heard back from more than 300 people about what

they thought the best neat places in Christchurch were.” “It meant we could put together a really fun guide that really shows off all the great things that Christchurch has to explore from cool cafes to learn to surf!” “Plus there’s new stuff opening all the time. Over the next few years I think it’s going to be really exciting to be here.” Canterbury Youth Workers Collective Co-ordinator Penny Prescott says that the guides are a great way for young people and kids to share their tips about what’s exiting, both new and old, in the city. “In the post-quake environment, we were hearing from the community that young people and kids were missing having places to go and the CERA Youth Wellbeing Survey confirmed this. The

6000 children took part in the Amazing Place Schools’ Competition. The competition saw kids contribute what they wanted to see in the city’s new playground.

Drink Red keeps brand for now A CHRISTCHURCH energy drinks maker can continue to use its existing branding over the summer, as Red Bull’s bid for an injunction against it won’t go before a High Court judge until next March. Global giant Red Bull is seeking a High Court injunction against Drink Red, a Christchurch-based company, to stop it from trading under its current brand. Drink Red released a vodka and energy pre-mixed drink under the name “Red” earlier this year. Lawyers for both sides were initially due to appear in the High Court in Auckland last week for a scheduling hearing but that did not go ahead.

Christchurch cafes to help Third World business owners By Emma-Jane McLennan

CAFÉS IN Christchurch could soon be supporting business owners in Third World countries thanks to the idea of a young entrepreneur. The Global Foodie Project works by taking a percentage off certain marked-up café items, and sending the money to food startups – creator Katie Talbot said. “It works through World Vision’s microfinance, so we know they’ll get the most money to the field.” The money will go straight to

business projects in Cambodia. The idea was sparked when Ms Talbot spent time with hill tribe women in Vietnam. “They’re out on the streets probably 16 hours a day making and selling [their products]. Their business success is owned by them and it’s their livelihood.” Ms Talbot – just 20-years-old herself – saw the women just needed a boost to make their businesses work better. So her idea, the Global Foodie Project, will start early next year with a pilot in Lincoln. Rustic Bakery and Café owner,

Liz Zhang, said she jumped at the idea because it’s a cause that’s close to her heart. “I come from China, so I know how people are poor and it’s great if you can help them start their own dream. This café is my own dream, and I guess that everybody has their own dream.” If the pilot goes as planned, the idea could be rolling out in cafes across New Zealand by around mid next year, with some big names already showing interest – meaning your coffee dates could be helping business start-ups in Third World countries.

13

It is understood the injunction won’t be argued before a judge until next March. Almost immediately upon Red’s launch, the drink attracted the attention of Red Bull, whose lawyers wrote to its new competitors alleging perceived copyright breaches. “It was inevitable that the Red beverage would gain sales as a result of being associated with Red Bull and that it would mislead and deceive consumers,” it said. The cheeky Kiwi-based manufacturer of the seven per cent alcoholic drink responded by using quotes from Red Bull’s legal threat in some of its marketing campaigns.

Coastguard extends radio service REACHING the Coastguard from your boat this summer is now available on VHF Channel 63. Boaties, kayakers and other water-goers can now contact the Coastguard in the Lyttelton Harbour and Pegasus Bay areas as the Coastguard extends its radio services to provide important safety services. The services include trip reports, bar watch reports, and arranging non-urgent assistance for breakdowns. Coastguard southern region manager Cheryl Moffat said you still need to be able to call for help, and recommended you tell someone where you are going, who you are going with and when

you will be back. “Having a VHF Call Sign is also important as this gives us your emergency contacts and details of your boat like its size, type and colour. It’s important to keep this up to date if you sell or change your boat,” said Ms Moffat. A trip report will provide the Coastguard with a starting point for a search if required. The new Coastguard Radio Service will also make it easier for boaties to contact Coastguard if they breakdown and need nonurgent assistance. Assistance for breakdowns is free to Coastguard members, but charges non-members $280 per hour cost recovery fee.

WONDERLAND: One of the Christmas Grotto’s many themed rooms.

Linda Hill

Milestone for Xmas grotto By Emma-Jane McLennan THE CHRISTMAS Grotto has become a festive tradition for many Christchurch families – and this year it celebrated 15 years. Spreydon’s grotto has grown from its humble beginnings as a simple nativity scene, to a giant production which takes a whole year to plan. It takes a lot of work but it’s all worth it when you see the children’s smiles, creator Linda Hill said.

“I just love it… There’s the excitement and anticipation of – what’s going to change, what’s new, what are we going to see? It’s just putting Christmas back into Christmas.” The grotto was started in 2000 by Ms Hill and her brother, congregation members at Spreydon Baptist Church, which runs the annual event. They’d been talking about the Christmas traditions they missed at the time: “We realised there was

nothing, then he said – let’s do it. Let’s do something special. So I said, how about a teddy bear nativity scene?” she said. It’s grown from that first year, more than doubling in size. Now it involves a series of themed rooms, set up by a construction company. Some rooms, such as toyland and the wrapping room, are annuals themes – others alternate year on year. The grotto is run by volunteers,

who welcomed more than 30,000 visitors to the site this year. Everyone through the door pays an entry fee, which goes towards the next years’ show. “We just keep making it bigger and better,” Ms Hill said. And it’s become a very popular event for both little kids – and big kids – alike. Many come every year to see the grotto, Ms Hill said: “It’s just taken off … I can’t believe it’s been 15 years already.”

AN UNDEVELOPED, languishing New York state park named after Donald Trump should be renamed, state legislators said, citing what they say are discriminatory proposals from the Republican presidential candidate. Trump donated the 178ha block land to the state in 2006 after plans for a golf course fell through. Budget cuts prompted the state to close the park in 2010, though signs for it remain.

Give your presence this season

Focus on giving presence — not presents — this Christmas. Actually, give your full attention and time to the people you love all the time, not just around the holiday season. Another thing you can do to make your presence felt is to “hug another human”. Go on, do it. Wrapping your gangly arms around someone else is heart-lifting stuff. Concert Review... 'Christmas in the Vines' with Sol3 Mio and the

Christchurch Symphony Orchestra conducted by Brian Law. Waipara Valley Winery, th Saturday 19 December, 2015. Reviewed by Christine Hainstock. With an audience of close to 4,200 and a standing ovation, Sol3 Mio certainly welcomed Christmas in fine style at Waipara Valley Winery on Saturday evening. The Christchurch Symphony Orchestra set the scene with Tchaikovsky's Dance of the Sugarplum Fairy and despite warm jackets, cold fingers, cold instruments and just one rehearsal, they coped well. Sol3 Mio, brothers Pene Pati and Amitai Pati and their cousin Moses Mackay entered singing Winter Wonderland and Jingle Bell Rock to rapturous applause. Their infectious personalities and on stage repartee is so natural and endearing. An unexpected treat was Pene's fiancé, Amina Edris and Amitai's girlfriend, Isabella Moore supporting their partners in Maria, Quando M'en Vo and Ebben from La Boheme and O Holy Night. Disney's Beauty and the Beast and Tom Jones'

Delilah made way for the hilarious antics the trio are renowned for, then Pavarotti's Stella in complete contrast. After interval Pene demonstrated his prowess in conducting the orchestra for Intermezzo from Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana. The programme was well balanced and varied with everything from arias to Ten Guitars (with one!). No way were they getting away with just one encore singing Cold Play's Fix You, Ed Sheeran's Rugby World Cup Anthem, I see Fire, then ending with Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas, to end a fantastic evening. The only down side was the support act which was in a totally different league and out of place. Fortunately when Sol3 Mio appeared, what had gone before was forgiven.

Fill the grid so that every row, every column and every 3x3 box contains the digits 1 to 9.

How many words of three or more letters can you make, using each letter only once? Plurals are allowed, but no foreign words or words beginning with a capital. There’s at least one five-letter word. Good 9 Very Good 12 Excellent 14

It’s like sudoku: each vertical and horizontal line has to contain the numbers 1-6, and the numbers can’t be repeated in any row or column. But it’s sudoku with a twist: The numbers in each heavily outlined set of squares, called cages, must produce the number in the top corner. For example, 5+ means the numbers add up to 5, 9x means the numbers multiply to equal 9. TIP: Numbers can be repeated in a cage, as long as they are not in the same line or row. © 2015 KenKen Puzzle LLC. All rights reserved

Hansen looking at the bigger picture •From page 28 I was on a school field coaching High School Old Boys. You learned along the way by making mistakes. I did an apprenticeship in coaching, so all my really bad failings and mistakes – and every coach makes them, no matter who you are – were done in a relatively private environment. As you become more exposed, with teams like Canterbury and the Crusaders, there’s media looking at what you’re doing. Early on, my mindset with the media was that I didn’t trust them. That was based on things I’d seen or felt myself. As time goes on, you work things out and realise that what they are is a conduit to the people you want to send messages to. I can control what I say so it becomes easier. When I was in the All Blacks, I was assistant coach and that’s subtly different to the head coach – you protect things a little more while the head coach is looking at the big picture. As I became All Blacks coach, my mindset had to change from being the protector to looking at the bigger picture. It was a challenge because a lot of people thought I couldn’t do it. It was interesting. I got some support, learned and it’s not been too bad, I suppose. You once said nothing in sport could ever match the pressure you felt as a policeman of telling someone a loved one had died ... Nothing will compare to dealing with people who have suffered a loss. Sport is hugely important in this country, and it’s one tool we can use effectively to help our obesity problem. A lot of national pride and identity comes from our national teams playing well. With the All Blacks, there is one constant: pressure all the time. It doesn’t go away. You’re expected to be on your game the whole time. What you come to realise is that if you can acknowledge it’s there, then you can start to work out how to deal with it. Are you going to flip out every time something

THOUGHTFUL: Steve Hansen says sport is hugely important in this country. PHOTO: GEOFF SLOAN raises it head? Once you understand that, then you’re prepared for it. It’s no different from, I guess, pilots who under pressure have to save lives, or surgeons. We plan for it so the pressure doesn’t get on top of you. You’re losing a test with five minutes to go. There doesn’t look any way back. Are you still enjoying that moment? No one enjoys losing but, with five minutes to go, it’s not over. It’s one of the more enjoyable parts of coaching, getting yourself out of a fix. You’d much prefer to not have to do it, but there are going to be times when you lose and times when you’re under immense pressure from a performance point of view to get the game won.

What that situation calls for is everyone to be clear-headed to give yourself belief. Against Ireland in 2013 [won 24-22] is a great example. We could have given up there and resigned ourselves to a loss but one of the beauties of this team is it doesn’t want to do that. When you were assistant coach in 2007, or when you were coaching HSOB, did you feel a loss as keenly as you do now? I’ve hated losing since the day I learned the concept of winning and losing. It’s probably one of my great strengths and one of my greatest weaknesses. The fact I hate it so much, I’ve got to learn to control it. There’s no point having a hissy-fit just because you’ve lost, but it doesn’t

mean you just accept it. There are so many things you can learn when you lose if you’re open to it. You look at yourself first and foremost. What did I contribute to this loss? What could I have done better? Only then can you look at other people outside of that and how you structured the game. At the same time, you’ve got to have that huge love of winning that can motivate you to make sure you don’t lose too often but you can’t allow that to overshadow the process of how you win. That’s the most important thing in sport. Where we got it wrong a number of years ago was when we said winning was not important. You ask any kid from the age of 10 – whether it’s rugby or two kids playing marbles – they want to win. That’s a natural instinct. What we should be focusing on is what are the things that allow you to win? Teaching the skills you need to win marbles under pressure is more important than worrying about whether you’re going to lose your favourite marble or not. If we can teach our kids to do that, we can take those skills off the park and transfer them. For example, I’m under pressure to pass my exams but I’m only under pressure because I haven’t prepared properly. If I prepare properly, I won’t be under as much pressure. OK, so I’m under pressure for time, there are five minutes left, so what do I have to do? I have to answer the question so I’ll concentrate on that and forget about the time. Can you over-coach, and do you worry that coaching becomes obsessive? You read about coaches who watch game film to 4am every morning ... Yes, you can over-coach, most definitely. Does it mean you’re over-coaching because you’re watching mountains of footage? No, that’s not over-coaching. Over-coaching is when you take all that stuff you’ve looked at and then try to make someone else process it. The job of the coach is to facilitate an environment where the

performance on Saturday is the head of the triangle and the base of the triangle is learning and fun. If there’s too much learning, if I’m sitting there telling you about all these things I’m watching at night, then it’s not a lot of fun. So performance becomes a chore and, once it becomes a chore, like anything in life, you don’t do it, you try to avoid it. You mentioned after the Samoa test this year that you did a bad job ... We did it the year before against England, too. We thought we got it right this year, but we didn’t. It’s a difficult thing to juggle. The players are the same, because they want to do more than they should.

With the All Blacks, there is one constant: pressure all the time. – Steve Hansen You’ve indicated that 2017 might be your last year. Isn’t that our job in the media to tell you when you should go? I’m sure if you decide it’s time for me to go, you won’t have any trouble telling me. My decisions have always been about two things: what’s right for the team and what’s right for your family? My wife and I have a blended family and we’ve got six children and we have to figure out what’s right for them. If something is not right for them, or for the team, you wouldn’t do it. If something is right for the family but not right for the team, or vice-versa, then I still wouldn’t do it. Both boxes have to be ticked. I can’t make that decision right now, and my gut feeling is [I won’t carry on], but I won’t know that until the time. That’s why I didn’t sign on for the next four years. I don’t expect the rugby union to have to pay me out if I leave. Let’s get [to 2017] and talk about it then. Do you think you’ll know? You always know, but are you honest enough to tell yourself? That’s the clincher.

Hansen manages to get best results Fresh from his World Cup triumph, All Blacks coach Steve Hansen was the keynote speaker at the recent Connecting Coaches convention in Auckland. Dylan Cleaver of the New Zealand Herald had a chat with him on the art of coaching In modern head coaching, how much of it is technical knowhow and how much is amateur psychology? There’s a component of manmanagement, which is massively important as a head coach. You’re managing a group of people. You’re trying to get them all aligned on the same page to do the same thing, which is to perform to such a level that you win test matches. Is there a degree of amateur psychology or emotional intelligence in understanding the individuals you’ve got? There’s a massive amount of that. To have an influence on somebody, you have to have emotional intelligence and understand the mood of the troops, the camp. They go hand in hand. Do you need to know about

TACTICS: Understanding what makes each individual in a team tick is crucial in coaching, says Steve Hansen. PHOTO GEOFF SLOAN rugby? Of course. You’ve got to have some form of tactics and techniques to run on the park and win tests. Getting the balance between those two things is important. In terms of man-management, some players might need a cuddle, some might respond better to a kick in the bum. Can damage be done if you get that wrong?

You can’t do a lot of damage cuddling someone, but if you’re prodding and putting too much pressure on somebody who can’t cope with it, then that can damage them, but not irreparably. Through experience, you learn what’s the right amount of pressure and when it’s the right time to apply it. Multiculturalism has had enormous benefits for New Zealand sport, particularly rugby, but

does that create its own pressures as a coach, particularly when the bulk of coaches in this country tend to be middle-aged white men? I don’t think that’s right. There were 500 people in that room [at the coaching convention] and it wasn’t full of middle-aged white people, so I think that’s a myth. Does it have its disadvantages? No. We take the approach that the

team comes first. We look at each individual after that. White people have their own idiosyncrasies, as do Pasifikas, as do the Maori cultures. Each culture brings their own little differences and it’s just understanding that. They could be pink, white or green, I don’t care. Having said that, learning their culture is important because it allows you to understand them as individuals. Is it something a coach should make a conscious decision to learn or does it happen organically? There’s a blueprint for it but what I try to do is look at the individual first and foremost. What makes this guy tick? Is he a family person? Is he an individual who likes his own company? Once you find that out, you can help them achieve what they want within the team. You told the convention that early in your coaching career, you were too sharp-tongued and perhaps a bit of a bully. The public perception of you has also changed over your tenure. Was there a lightbulb moment when you thought you needed to make this change? When I started coaching, there were no media. •Turn to page 27
