By Grant Bryant REPAIR AND replacement bills for the city’s earthquake-damaged horizontal infrastructure – roads, bridges and underground pipes – will come in $473 million below budget.

Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Agency Minister Gerry Brownlee said the saving could be put down to astute management by the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team.

“Good planning and efficient work on the ground means the programme of repairing eligible quake-damaged roads, bridges and underground pipes will be completed for $2.69 billion, $473 million less than estimated at the time of the Cost Sharing Agreement between the Crown and Christchurch City Council in 2013.”

The overall budget, contributed by the Crown, city council and NZ Transport Agency was made available to SCIRT in 2013.

Meanwhile, Christchurch Central Development Unit director Baden Ewart confirmed the city has an extra $46 million for infrastructure because of the under spend.

The fund is strictly reserved for public works projects, but eligibility criteria for ventures which could benefit from the new fund had yet to be fully determined.

Support for train idea

LALA GITTOES never knows how long it’s going to take her to get from her North Canterbury home to work in Addington: Sometimes it takes 50 minutes, sometimes more than two hours.

If passenger rail services started, she said she would jump at the chance to use them.

A commuter rail link linking Rangiora and Kaiapoi to Christchurch is on the table again, and will be debated at a city council meeting tomorrow.

It would use the existing railway and stations to start a “park and ride” commuter rail system.

Environment Canterbury investigated commuter rail options last year, but decided it would be too expensive and was unlikely to be well-used.

It estimated a rail service would cost about $10m to set up, even if existing rail lines and stations were used and retired carriages were bought from Auckland for the services.

It estimated about 500 passengers would use the service each day, which was based on the 440 passengers using the bus service from Waimakariri into the city.

But Mrs Gittoes believed people would be much more likely to use rail than they were to use the bus.

She moved into her home near Cust nine years ago, and said she was prepared for a long drive.

But in the years since the earthquakes she said the traffic had become steadily worse, and cars were sometimes banked up to Kaiapoi.

“I loathe the drive into Christchurch with all the heavy traffic, and it’s hard work for the cars as well.

Bid to improve car parking for tourists

A NEW parking area could be just the ticket to draw tourists back into the central city.

That’s the view of Christchurch and Canterbury Tourism chief executive Tim Hunter who says visitors are bypassing the central city because getting a park is too hard – especially for those in campervans.

“We would like to reverse that trend by providing a place where visitors using rental cars and motorhomes could easily park at reasonable cost and walk into the city,” Mr Hunter said.

“We just don’t have that at

the moment and the percentage of people who arrive [in Christchurch], rent a car and leave without coming into the city is too high.”

CCT would be doing research next year to confirm this was the case but feedback from businesses catering to tourists as well as other evidence, indicated that it was.

About 700,000 visitors flew in to Christchurch Airport every year but only about 250,000 people passed through the visitors’ centre at the Botanic Gardens.

Generally, around New Zealand, about 60 per cent of international visitors used information sites, so

the fact that the percentage was so much lower in Christchurch indicated that visitors were not getting into the city as often as they were in other parts of the country.

Mr Hunter said CCT had previously raised the idea of making some land available for visitor car parking with the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority and he intended to bring it up again soon.

Ideally, he said the car park would be located within the four avenues but not necessarily too close to the centre so as to be easy to find and access.

It would also need to be available for at least a few years, well sign

posted and include spaces for campervans to park.

Central City Business Association manager Lisa Goodman said she would welcome CCT’s research.

She was unaware of there being a problem with visitors avoiding the city but she found that they often struggled to find their way around.

“Dotted around the central city there are car parks. At least two of them are a significant size and I would think they would be able to take campervans, so it could just be an issue of making sure the right information is getting through to visitors.”

A TELCO giant is backing Christchurch with a multi-million dollar project to help digital innovation start-ups.

Vodafone launched its innovation accelerator programme today – one that will help budding entrepreneurs launch their businesses on the world stage.

Christchurch was a natural choice as creativity here is so rampant, Vodafone ‘xone’ advisory board chairman Matt Williams said.

“This is about us finding 10 high-potential entrepreneurs with amazing digital start-ups and really helping them build their businesses here and then ideally take their businesses to the world.”

Applications opened today. The programme will operate out of the new Vodafone building, at the centre of the Innovation Precinct, when it opens in April next year.

The 10 selected applicants will have full use of their own office space, as they are given the mentoring and leverage to get their ideas off the ground, Mr Williams said.

“We’ve put together a package of $150,000 in value for each of these start-ups.”

Included is $25,000 in seed funding to help with the expenses of launching a business.

The programme is backed by Callaghan Innovation, a Government agency, as well as start-up business Smudge and organisations such as the Ministry of Awesome.

New transport bid A NEW joint committee to oversee Greater Christchurch’s public transport could be set up next year.

A report by public sector consultant Peter Winder recommends that Environment Canterbury share its responsibility for public transport with the city council, as well as the Selwyn and Waimakariri district councils.

Each council will decide over the next three months whether to agree to establish the joint committee.

In October last year, the Mayoral Forum asked the Minister of Transport to review governance and delivery arrangements for public transport, with a focus on Greater Christchurch.

ships, particularly between ECan and the city council, were hampering the delivery of public transport services.

Jim Palmer, chair of the Canterbury chief executives’ forum and chief executive of Waimakariri District Council, said that, once agreed by all councils, the joint committee option could be implemented immediately.

“Having a joint committee responsible for Greater Christchurch’s public transport will improve the governance and delivery of bus and ferry services in the long run.”

Mr Palmer said the joint committee approach would also encourage more people to catch the bus as the facilities and services continued to improve.

Pool parties welcome summer THE CITY council is rebuilding a new paddling pool in the east, as it reopens repaired and rebuilt pools across the city for another summer season.

It is rebuilding Avebury Paddling Pool, in Eveleyn Couzins Avenue, which is expected to open again towards the end of the summer.

The original paddling pool has been closed since it was damaged in the February 2011 earthquake.

The rebuilt facility will feature new concrete surrounds, new seating areas, a new access ramp, and a large shade sail.

City council community facilities unit manager Darren Moses said funding was set aside in the Long Term Plan earlier this year for the rebuild, because paddling pools contribute to the health and wellbeing of families.

“For the past two years, we have been making a huge effort to ensure as many pools as possible are operating over the summer season, because they are key gathering places for children and their families,” he said.

“Last year, we pulled out all stops to get two of the city’s major outdoor pools – Norman Kirk Memorial Pool in Lyttelton and Waltham Pool – reopened, and people were lining up to get in on opening day.

“The rebuilt Scarborough Paddling Pool also proved to be very popular, drawing thousands of people to the Scarborough foreshore each weekend, and we’re hoping this will continue this year.”

POLICE ARE not ruling out that three violent robberies throughout the city could be linked.

Four men burst into a sleepout at a Hei Hei residence on Monday night, at around 7.15pm, demanding cash and drugs, before fleeing in a Ford Focus they stole from the property.

Two men at the Gregory Ave property were assaulted, and while no injuries resulted from the attack, it has left the victims traumatised.

It follows the robbery of two security van guards at the McDonald’s Christchurch Airport branch 11 days ago, and the holdup of the Phoenix Bar and Cafe in Papanui on Sunday night.

A shot was fired by one of the robbers into the ceiling during the hold-up. No one was injured.

Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam said police are not ruling out a connection between the attacks.

One person who lives in the Hei Hei street where Monday night’s attack took place told The Star he heard what he thought was a loud explosion around the time the robbery took place, and then a more muffled one five minutes later.

DOG OWNERS who walk their pets without carrying a poo bag could be facing fines by mid next year, if a new bylaw gets the tick tomorrow.

The bylaw would open up previously banned parts of the central city and the beach to dogs, and make the rules around where they are able to go simpler.

The ban on dogs would be lifted in Cathedral Square, Cashel Mall, New Brighton mall, New Regent St and Victoria Park.

But it would also tighten the rules for dog owners.

They can currently be fined for not picking up after their dogs, but under the new rules they could be fined $300 if they were not carrying something to pick it up with.

It would also require owners to keep their dog “under effective control” while walking them anywhere in public. That means the dog must be close, in sight, not creating a nuisance and either on a leash or responding to commands.

In the past the rules about where dogs are allowed have been different from area to area, but the new bylaw would give general rules covering different types of site, like all playgrounds or all cemeteries.

Christchurch has one of the highest dog ownership rates in the country, with more than 35,000 dogs registered.

City councillor David East said that considering the numbers of dogs in the city, there were relatively few problems with dogs.

Last year, the city council animal management team handed out 1517 fines for breaching the Dog Control Act or city council Dog Control Bylaw, most for not registering their dog. Seven dog owners were prosecuted and convicted for more serious offences.

Just under 60 dogs are classified as dangerous in Christchurch.

If the city council approves the bylaw tomorrow, people will be given a chance to have their say before it is finalised.

CITY COUNCIL staff have been threatened, spat on and left with bruising and sprains after being assaulted while on the job this year.

Last year, there were nine incidents where staff were verbally abused on the job by a member of the public.

But between January and November this year there were already 20 reports of staff being verbally abused or physically assaulted, 13 which have had to be referred to police.

City council health and safety auditor Mel Haskell said staff had been a lot more proactive about reporting abuse or threats, because of the Ashburton Work and Income office shooting last year.

She said front-line staff, especially people giving parking fines, took the brunt of the abuse.

But other staff worked with city council housing, on building control teams or in libraries or service centres.

She said people sometimes became aggravated when they were told something they didn’t like, or asked to leave.

“All sorts of members of public use the library. You tend to think of libraries as quiet places, but they are actually very high traffic places.”

She said security guards worked in some of the libraries, but they could not always prevent a confrontation from happening.

If someone physically threatened staff and refused to back down, the police were called in, she said.

She said the confrontations took a toll on staff.

They were given support and follow-up meetings with their managers, and front-line staff were also given training in what to do in a violent situation, she said.

“The focus for front-line staff around de-escalation techniques, so saying I hear what you’re saying, I understand where you’re coming from. But sometimes people are really seeing red and it doesn’t work.”

She asked people to remember that city council staff were just doing their jobs, and take proper steps to complain or appeal if they were upset about something a staff member had done.

New Zealand Fire Service spokesman Peter Riordan said 20 out of 164, or 12.19 per cent of structure fires in the five months of this financial year had been identified as suspicious in Christchurch.

This compared with between six and seven per cent in the comparable sized Counties-Manakau area.

As to the reasons so many fires were deliberately lit in Christchurch, criminologist and Canterbury University lecturer Professor Greg Newbold said alienation,

hopelessness and frustration were key drivers, and were bound to figure largely in the recent cluster.

“Arsons do tend to cluster in the same way as teen suicides and spree killings do – when one happens more tend to. Arsonists like their crimes to have an impact too, so you don’t see clusters like this happening in the middle of winter.”

The Fire Service would be well aware of this, but could only take a reactive role in combating arson, Professor Newbold said.

“Thankfully the Fire Service is always quick to respond, but because of the nature of arsonists they can only really take a reactionary role. They can educate youngsters about the dangers of fires, but the element of danger generally ties into the motivation of arsonists.”

Motivation to deliberately set fires could generally be broken down into a series of main categories.

These included excitement, revenge, vandalism, concealment of a previous

crime and drunkenness.

“Excitement arson is about thrill-seeking – setting the fire and watching the reaction – seeing the fire being fought and the damage it does. Revenge falls into getting back at society, which is why so many schools often get targeted by young people who want to ‘get back’ at a place where they were never able to fit in.

“Vandalism is a bit more of a simple motivator where people just want to destroy something, and

with drunkenness it might be a spur of the moment opportunity where the person might not even remember why they set the fire.”

Arsonists generally had deep-seated mental troubles or mental illness.

“They can generally be described as misfits.

They will have little or no connection with wider society and feel a sense of hopelessness and alienation which becomes frustration and sometimes manifests in becoming an arsonist.”

Recent arsons •Tuesday, December 1 – A pavilion at Hillmorton High School damaged in a suspicious fire.

Cairns poses the question CHRIS CAIRNS has spoken out candidly for the first time about the match fixing and perjury accusations and had a crack at Black Caps captain Brendon McCullum.

Cairns wrote a column for the Sunday Star-Times at the weekend, where he talks about the media, and facing the prospect of fighting civil proceedings from Indian billionaire Lalit Modi.

Mr Modi is still weighing up whether to proceed with the civil case after Cairns was cleared of charges of perjury at the conclusion of a nine-week criminal trial last week. However, a trial window has been determined for next March at London’s High Court.

Cairns’ not guilty verdict comes after he won more than $1 million in costs and damages in a 2012 libel suit against Mr Modi, after the former Indian Premier League chairman used Twitter to accuse the former New Zealand all-rounder of being involved in match fixing.

In the Sunday Star-Times column, Cairns asks: When is not guilty, not guilty?

“For six years now I have been in litigation. Beat up, yes. Exhausted, yes. Penniless, yes. Will I continue to fight, absolutely.

“My recent accusers and those who supported others during my trial in the UK have lived a life which has been uninterrupted and sees them remunerated handsomely for their efforts. I on the other hand, have been black balled.

Chris Cairns “I never sought to have the media take my side. I only requested balance and not to judge. Allow the facts and time to shape a picture where the evidence can be presented and then an informed opinion can be garnered.

“But sections of the media needed a villain and that role was attributed to me. It was an avalanche which I resigned myself to early on only because I knew that it was only 12 people on a jury in the Southwark Crown Court in London that could truly alter what had seen me unfairly labelled via an assumption of guilt.

“When the story broke on 5th December, 2013, about three former New Zealand players being investigated by the ICC for match fixing, I had no idea it was me that was involved.

“I now face Lalit Modi, again.

Lalit Modi McCullum and Vincent are his key witnesses in his civil case in London. Vincent has currently incurred thirteen life bans from cricket (one would probably suffice) for his corrupt deeds and, as the jury in my trial was told, he has kept all the cash from his criminal deceit.

“The current NZ cricket captain now has to decide if he will support Modi in his upcoming action.

“McCullum’s sharp-suited lawyer Garth Gallaway sat beside Modi’s lawyers for the first week and a half of my criminal trial in London and somewhat surprisingly, Gallaway is unsure of the looming trial dates. Quite bizarre.

“But there is still a real headscratcher regarding McCullum.

Why didn’t he come forward to Modi before my 2012 libel trial?

McCullum had given a statement

Brendon McCullum to the ICC in February 2011 with Dan Vettori present and both men could have helped Modi out then.

So, why now?”

Canterbury University dean of law professor Chris Gallavin believes Mr Modi’s hopes of initiating his £1.5 million ($3.3 million) civil claim for fraud against Cairns may hinge on his ability to secure testimony from key witnesses Vincent,and McCullum, and Vincent’s ex-wife Ellie Riley.

The trio are not obliged to front for the civil case and Prof Gallavin says Mr Modi faces a challenge in trying to convince them to appear.

Even if he manages to achieve that, his hopes of winning a successful verdict will be undermined by the fact Vincent - a self-confessed cheat - emerged from the criminal trial with his credibility under serious question.

“Even if they do (testify) the judge will still have to make an assessment as to their credibility and as to whether he believes them,” Prof Gallavin told Newstalk ZB. “He’s not bound to having to believe two of the three as was required with the perjury case - so he can believe one and not the others - but it still comes down to an issue of credibility.

“So Modi has got some real hurdles and he certainly hasn’t got it in the bag even if those witnesses do decide to give evidence.”

Cairns remains determined to continue to fight to defend his name and reputation, and Prof Gallavin has questioned whether Modi has any new evidence that was not presented in the criminal trial.

However, Prof Gallavin noted Cairns has made a “formidable enemy” in Mr Modi, who has made it his personal quest to see him brought down. The prospect of Mr Modi offering inducements to witnesses to front the civil court could further damage their credibility.

“That might affect their credibility. That would be brought up in the hearing as to whether Vincent is receiving anything from Modi for his testimony and that would cast a shadow over the credibility,” Prof Gallavin added.

“But in a sense all bets are off as to what Modi’s going to do because he’s driven probably not by logic and reason but by a sense of injustice.”

Hair today - Christchurch’s coiffeurs The average Cantabrian will fork out almost $70 during a visit to the hair salon, more than half of women colour their hair, and men are becoming more adventurous when they sit down for a cut. Gabrielle Stuart reports A SIMPLE trim is no longer all that Cantabrians are after when they sit down in the hairdresser’s chair.

More than half of people now colour their hair, and more than a third regularly use styling products, according to a new survey by Canstar Blue.

And in the years since the earthquakes, True Grit salon owner Jacqui Victor said, her clients have been looking for something extra as well.

“Since the earthquakes, they will often ask for not only the hair, but for pampering as well. They want to be looked after, to feel special, and they want to be confident that they’re in the hands of an expert.”

This was partly because the economy was better and many clients had more money to spend than they did before the earthquakes, she said.

However, she also believed it was about the stress relief that time in the hairdresser’s chair could provide.

And women aren’t the only ones looking for something special when they visit a salon.

Five years ago, Neil Chapman was working as a tradesman.

“If you had told me I would own a hair salon, I wouldn’t have believed it,” he said.

These days, he spends as much time as he can in the “man cave” men’s salon, Manscape, which he runs with his partner, Kaisa Pruler.

Originally from the UK, he said salons in Europe catered a lot more for men and it was something he found was missing in Christchurch.

“Being a tradie going in to getting a haircut, I found I got treated differently. But whereas it used to be a more high-profile service on Victoria St, now it’s something that caters much more for the average man,” he said.

As a child, Mr Chapman said getting his hair cut was a chore he hated as much as going to the dentist.

“The man cave here puts guys in a more comfortable environment, rather than having to go to a woman’s boutique to get a cut,” he said.

The Canstar Blue survey found men visited a hairdresser a lot more often than women did about every nine weeks, compared with 15 weeks for women.

However, once they were there, they tended to spend half as much, with $37 the average, compared with $85 for women.

One in six men said they coloured their hair, trailing the 65 per cent of women with coloured locks. And more than half of men said they washed their hair every day, compared with just one in four women.

Mr Chapman said that the services men were asking for were changing too.

“I used to pay $15 for a cheap haircut. But we give a wash, cut and condition, with a head and shoulder massage, and you don’t leave with that irritating hair down your back feeling. Once you’ve tried it, you’re converted.”

New City Barbers owner Chris Terry also focuses on men, but said he liked to stick to the basics, with a “straight-up, no bull**** barber shop”, he said.

“We really focus on keeping it quite traditional. I don’t go out there saying what’s the latest trend, - we keep it simple. Trends go round and round, and the majority of people don’t pay attention to them.”

He said many customers were looking for “sharper” styles than they might have a year ago.

However, the biggest influence on the styles they requested was how often they would need to be

maintained, he said.

Mrs Victor also believed this might lie behind the differences the survey recorded between the habits of older and younger generations. It found baby boomers visited a salon twice as often as people aged in their teens to mid 30s.

While baby boomers visited every eight weeks on average, the According to the Canstar Blue survey, the average Cantabrian visits a hair salon once every three months.

Shorter, more high-maintenance haircuts, tended to be more popular among older generations, Mrs Victor said. “For someone who has more of a bob or a

cropped haircut, they need to get it trimmed more often - six weeks is really the use-by date.”

Long hair was on trend for younger generations, she said, which meant many people tried to drag out the time they spent between visits.

Overall, she said her clients’ average wait between visits was just over seven weeks.

Heightened police presence promised during holidays

By Grant Bryant WHILE YOU prepare for your holiday season the police have already swung into theirs, promising heightened presence and visibility over a two-month period that began in December.

Senior Sergeant Gordon Spite said police were very well prepared to deal with the perennial holiday problems of boozing, driving and domestic disputes.

“Alcohol consumption rates invariably rise or spike at this time of the year, which leads to the old problems of excessive drinking and ensuring our roads stay safe, as well as a rise in the rate of domestic incidents,” he said.

“To help try and counter the ill-effects of this festive time we started a two-month focus on alcohol and traffic at the start of this month. We’re began that at the start of December because we want people to take that early pointer that we could be any where any time with checkpoints or patrols.”

Police were expecting huge nights in town at New Year’s Eve when Kiwi rockers Shihad headline a Cathedral Square concert, and also the last Friday before the Christmas holiday period starts.

“That Friday is always a big one, so we’ll adopting an approach of being highly visible early in the evening and keeping up that presence throughout the night.”

When it came to domestic disputes or violence police urged some simple thinking to help avoid problems.

“We can’t be in people’s houses but by maintaining that high visibility we hope we’ll remain in their minds – a lot of the problems here are alcohol-fuelled or related.

SAFE’s campaign against cruelty to bobby calves in the New Zealand dairy industry has seen the organisation spend more than $10,000 on a controversial advertising in the United Kingdom.

We asked Cantabrians what they thought of the issue

Chris Forbes, of Riccarton: “I think it’s definitely all right to highlight a major issue – hopefully that is justified by the NZ dairy industry stamping out any cruelty and it’d be nice if the pig and chicken farming industries did the same.”

Sarah Hurley, student, of Riccarton: “I do think that it’s probably bad publicity, especially for New Zealand because it’s one of our main exports. So I’d probably be fighting against it. I know that a lot of Kiwi farmers are honest and are really safe when it comes to animals and I guess we’ve got health and safety who do a great job.”

Paul Lineker, beneficiary, of Riccarton: “I don’t think it would particularly hurt Canterbury, I’ve actually done part of that job, picking up the bobby calves, and a lot of them do get mistreated.

So I actually think the campaign is fair enough.”

Maryanne Roberts, administrator, of Avonhead: “I think it’s shocking that it’s actually happening but I think they should actually have looked into it. It’s wrong that the actually farmers are being blamed - it’s really wrong. The publicity is obviously going to make it look like the farmers here in New Zealand are actually doing that and that’s wrong. The people doing it should definitely be punished though.”

Olivia Lonsdale, waitress, of Avonhead: “I’m vegan so I agree with what they’re saying. I guess it’s going to hurt our industry but for me personally it’s like, well, that’s the truth.”

Brandon Downer, roading contractor, of Riccarton: “Shedding light on this kind of thing is fine, because any kind of cruelty is bad. My girlfriend and I only eat free-range food and I think this kind of thing only makes us pleased that we do so.”

Jade Eade, student, of Avonhead: “I think it’s fair enough, people should be exposed to this kind of animal cruelty. Any kind of cruelty is not good or acceptable.”

Tuahi Carr, high school student, of Avonhead: “Animals deserve to be treated the same as humans, and should be treated with respect, so I think it’s all right for these guys do expose it.”

The Block winners have no regrets

THE WINNERS of The Block NZ: Villa Wars say they hate confrontation and don’t agree with their portrayal as the TV3 show’s resident bad guys.

“I definitely wouldn’t call Mitch and I a villain,” Brooke Thompson told the New Zealand Herald after Sunday night’s live auction finale, which saw her and partner Mitch Davies net the $190,000 proceeds from the sale of their renovated Sandringham house, plus $100,000 in prize money.

“I personally hate confrontation, I do anything to avoid it,” she said.

“I really care how other people perceive me, so I actually found it really hard.”

Banker Thompson and plumber Davies of Christchurch were regularly painted as the show’s villains, taking a hammering in news headlines and social media comments for their on-screen attitude, which included harsh reviews and tactically marking down competitors’ handiwork.

Davies believed they’d been cast as baddies by story producers on the TV3 show.

“They can make us out to be whatever they want us to be. I guess they’d made their minds up before we even got there,” he said.

Thompson said all negativity came from online commentators.

“To our faces, we haven’t had a single negative comment. People have been so supportive, they say they’re really proud of how we played the game. People have been so lovely to us, it’s all been online,” she said.

“At the end of the day, our

The couple said they’d had just three hours sleep after celebrating last night’s win through most of the night.

Each of the show’s four couples won a decent profit during the tense live auction episode, with Jamie and Hayden and Cat and Jeremy both netting $160,000, and Sarah and Minanne winning $123,000. Cat and Jeremy also won the people’s choice award, a new car.

Traditionally, The Block’s first auction wins the most money, and the winning couple had a seemingly extra advantage by being one of only two couples with a house in a school zone.

But Thompson and Davies

couldn’t pinpoint exactly why their house had earned the most money.

Said Davis: “History shows that going first is a good option, but I think that everyone’s house has sold for a good amount, and everyone made a decent amount of cash. It was very even - it just showed that there were four different houses on the market and four different buyers.”

Said Thompson: “We’re not from Auckland we don’t know how important school zones are here.

Some people are saying it’s a big deal, others weren’t. I have no idea if that was a big deal or not.

Said Davis: “Cat and Jeremy were in the same zone, they got the same amount as Jamie and Hayden, who weren’t.”

Thompson said they had no regrets about their actions on the show.

“You should never live with regret, you learn, I think that’s really important. Living with regret, you focus on the negative.

If you learn from an experience you make a positive out of it,” she said.

“We did play the game hard, we put our heart and souls into The Block, because it potentially can be life changing. To come into this thing and not give it 110 per

cent and not be in to win it can be a wasted opportunity, all four teams wanted to give it our absolute all.

She said the teams were much closer than they appeared on the show.

“I hope everyone saw it on the live show: we’re closer than what the public realise. We’re all really good mates, we’re always chatting, really supportive. All of us went through this amazing experience together.

“Not many people have gone through this kind of thing, and I know we’ll be life long friends.”

Her advice to anyone thinking about applying for the next season of the show was to “pick who you want to do it with very carefully”.

“You need to have a really open and honest relationship. You can’t let things build up ... to get the job done. If you’re thinking of auditioning just do it, it’s the best thing we’ve ever done. We learnt so much and grew as people. It’s unbelievable the life experience you get.”

Family pleads with council to keep bach

ALEX AND Tracy Stewart will learn tomorrow if they are able to keep the Port Levy bach which has been in their family for generations.

The bach, which was more than 75 years old, is built on a “paper road” – land which is legally set aside for road, but has not been developed.

Most of the land is owned by the city council, and about 7 sq m is owned by Te Runanga O Koukourarata Society.

The runanga plans to build several holiday homes on the land, while the city council has money set aside to upgrade the picnic area, toilets and car park on the foreshore.

The bach could compromise both plans.

But speaking to the city council in May, Tracy Stewart said the bach had historical significance, and was full of memories for the family.

She pleaded with the city council to leave the bach, which was bought by her grandfather in 1940.

“We believe we have existing use rights and that the recommendations put to the council lack justification and compassion,” Mr Stewart said.

The family paid rates to the council for more than 50 years, believing they had rights to the land.

They kept paying rates until 2010, when

the problem was spotted. The family was refunded then for five years of rates paid.

They were told at the time that the bach could not legally be there.

They have also offered to remove the back rooms in the bach so the runanga can go ahead with its development plans.

After meeting with the family and getting more advice on the situation, city council planning and transport team leader Richard Holland has recommended that the bach should be removed.

If the city council decides tomorrow to order the removal of the bach, it will need to give the owners six months notice.

But Mr Holland recommended they should be given two years notice.

Passer-by cuts seatbelt to save motorist trapped in submerged car TOM DOUDNEY

A motorist has told how he saved a woman’s life as she lay trapped upside down in a river after crashing near Tai Tapu on Sunday.

Anthony Goomes (below) held the woman’s head out of the Halswell River while waiting for help to arrive.

Mr Goomes said it was surreal experience.

“It’s pretty amazing, I am still in shock,” he said yesterday.

Mr Goomes and his partner had been having lunch at Tai Tapu Hotel when they chanced across the crash in the Halswell River near the intersection of Osterholts Rd at about 1.30pm.

The woman had been driving a Nissan hatchback towing a tandem trailer loaded with building materials when it left the road and went down a grass bank.

The Nissan ended up in the river where it flipped and the trailer landed on top of it, trapping her inside.

After cutting the woman’s seat belt, Mr Goomes was unable to free the woman so he stayed with her, holding her head above the

A farmer used a tractor to lift the vehicle out of the water so that firefighters could cut the driver free. The driver was taken to Christchurch Hospital.

The police spokeswoman said the incident was a timely reminder for everyone to make sure they were experienced at towing a trailer and ensuring that the load did not exceed the towing capacity of their vehicle.

In another crash on Sunday

afternoon, six people were taken to Christchurch Hospital after their campervan was involved in a collision with a car towing an empty horse float.

The campervan was turning from Barkers Rd on to Main South Rd and had 12 people onboard at

the time. The driver and sole occupant was uninjured.

Inspector Derek Erasmus said police wished to thank the public for their patience while the southbound lane of Main South Rd was closed and diversions were in place for about 90min.

There are so many causes out there including ones that help animals, people, hospitals, babies, schools, the environment. The list is big.

Choose something that resonates with you. That’s key.

Where do I give back? I’ve

sponsored some mates on charity drives this year and ran the Queenstown Marathon, fundraising for a deserving friend.

I’m also an ambassador for the Achilles NZ charity, which helps disabled Kiwis to participate in mainstream events. I’ve helped guide or assist several disabled athletes to achieve their run goals in events and loved it. It’s a lot of fun and I’ve made some lifelong friends too.

I’m next guiding a disabled athlete at the Cigna Wellington Round the Bays event on February 21. Join us too if you like running! I’d love to see you there and Achilles always opens its arms to more members! I assure you it will lift your heart too to be involved.

anta Claus came to town last Sunday to the delight of young, old and those somewhere in between. Preceded by floats and colourful marchers representing Christchurch’s diversity in everything from churches, businesses and ethnic communities, the jolly old gent was the climax of this year’s Santa Parade. Making a noisy progress down the length of Riccarton Road, the tide of jubilation concluded at the railway lines to the cheers and applause from the crowd of onlookers. It was then time for Santa to go back to his workshop and stop the elves from fighting over the fruit mince pies!

Staged at the Isaac Theatre Royal, the 2016 Showbiz season will take Cantabrians on a journey around the world, and back through the decades, along the way capturing the distinct styles and sounds of each era.

Mamma Mia! is the first hit show of the year, opening March 31. The story-telling magic of Swedish supergroup ABBA's timeless songs propels this enchanting tale of love, laughter and friendship, and the audience will end up dancing in the aisles!

Hairspray follows, with a season from June 8 – 18.

Featuring the styles and music of America in the 1960s, it has a vibrant score inspired by Dowop, early Motown, Rock and Roll, and 60s TV music shows.

The final show of the year, opening September 15th, is Evita, the epic musical masterpiece from Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra Psychedelic R&B outfit Unknown Mortal Orchestra is back in New Zealand and plays

The Foundry at Canterbury University on Tuesday night (15th December). The string of shows follow the release of UMO's highly acclaimed third album 'Multi-Love' and will be the first time the act has performed on New Zealand soil since 2014's Laneway Festival.

Currently based in Portland, frontman Ruban Nielson will be joined by his cohorts from his adopted hometown – bassist Jacob Portrait, drummer Riley Geare, and keyboardist Quincy McCrary.

Already one of the year’s best albums, 'Multi-Love' follows 'II' (2013) and their selftitled 2011 debut, which blew the lid off the bedroom project started by Nielson following his relocation to Portland and the dissolution of the Mint Chicks.

UMO's songs often descend into extended psychedelic jams, and with the addition of McCrary on keys, their new material – as well as favourites from their first two records – has taken on an extra dimension live.

Carter and McCaw left out of Latham wary Sonny Bill Williams’ ‘Dream XIII’ SONNY BILL Williams has selected his Dream XIII – the players he played with or against who left a lasting impression on him – but could find no room for Richie McCaw or Dan Carter.

Williams listed the top 13 rugby or league players he had come across in his playing career on Australian website Sporting News.

The list included All Blacks Keven Mealamu, Jerome Kaino, Aaron Cruden, Jonah Lomu, Nehe Milner-Skudder, Malakai Fekitoa, French veteran Thierry Dusautoir, English icon Jonny Wilkinson, Wallabies Kurtley Beale and Quade Cooper and league players Kieran Foran, Johnathan Thurston, Mitchell Pearce and Anthony Mundine.

Williams made his decisions based on the players he respected both on and off the field.

Mealamu was selected “not just for what he’s done on the field, but for what he’s done off it”.

“When you’re in that All Blacks environment and you see what he does, he’s such an inspiring person,” Williams told Sporting News.

Jerome Kaino: “He’d definitely be one who could play league. I love the way he plays and carries and smashes, there’s just no fear in him.”

Aaron Cruden: “He’s just a little magician. He’s got the highest winning percentage for a No 10 in an All Blacks jersey. He might not get the praise he deserves, but you’ve just gotta look at that.

And he led the Chiefs back-toback when they probably weren’t expected to.”

Jonah Lomu: “The greatest All Black ever. He’s someone that stood out because even when I didn’t play rugby I knew who he was. You just have to go back and watch some highlights of him to see how crazy what he did was.

You don’t see players these days running through ten blokes on the way to the tryline.”

Malakai Fekitoa: “He’s another young bloke coming up and he’s

BLACK CAPS opening batsman Tom Latham is not going to be taking the Sri Lankans lightly.

After a tough tour of Australia, where the Black Caps went down 2-0 in the test series, the side has returned home to take on what looks like a green Sri Lankan team at Dunedin tomorrow.

The home side will go into the test as favourite but Latham knows the side has to get out and perform.

“Obviously, it is not going to be the same without Mahela [Jayawardene] and [Kumar] Sangakkara but they’ve got some quality players who have done well here in the past,’’ he said.

“They had a few guys here in the A tour. It is a unknown for them which can make them dangerous. The cricket they played at the Basin last year, they played really well. We did well to tip them over, but they played really well.’’

Latham said the New Zealand side had an obvious target for the series – to win 2-0 and play good cricket.

“We are fine with the cricket we were playing over the last test.

That will hold us in good stead for a good summer of cricket.

“We had started to hit our plans better for longer as well. The boys did a great job with the ball. We were not quite there with the bat.

Hopefully, we can get that in order for this series.’’

Latham had some time back home in Christchurch returning from the series in Australia and appreciated the time in his own bed.

He played one game of twenty-20 cricket for Canterbury against the Sydney Thunder and said it had been enjoyable.

Latham was part of the New Zealand side which took part in the historic day-night test in Adelaide and said he really enjoyed the occasion.

“It was cool. It was a pretty awesome experience; cool playing in a historic test match.

“It has a future. To see 40,000 there in day one was pretty cool.

In that third session, things changed so much. Conditions changed a little bit. There was more swing and a little more movement in the wicket.

“It was not too hard during the day time and at night. It was just that twilight time, before the lights were on full and took effect.’’

Latham said the side had a forgettable first test in Brisbane when it was possibly underdone but had bounced back well in the remaining two tests.

He racked up a half-century in the first innings at Adelaide but it was a series in which he made a few starts and saw off the opening attack only to then get out before he could knock up a sizeable score.

Unfortunately, that was cricket, he said. Great balls came along and terrific catches were taken.

“It is disappointing to get out but on the other hand I am getting myself in those situations by getting starts which is nice. I feel like I am hitting the ball fairly well and if I can get in that situation again I can kick on.

“It is just cricket. In test cricket it only takes one ball. You think you are doing really good and then one ball comes along, with all the catchers and that there. That is just the way it is.’’

Munro Malaysia-bound

RACE DRIVER James Munro will take his career to the next level this weekend.

Munro, 18, travels to Malaysia today to compete in the Sepang 12-hour endurance race, one of the most high-profile events on the Asian motorsport calendar.

He will team up with three other drivers racing for the Giti Tyre team in a Lamborghini Super Trofeo Huracan. The event will be a new experience with Munro’s exposure to date primarily consisting of single-seat racing.

Malaysia’s Sepang circuit will be familiar to many having hosted the Malaysian formula one grand prix since 1999. It’s also familiar to Munro having competed there in last year’s formula masters series: “I know the track quite well, it’s a challenging and technical circuit and rain is also a factor there as well.”

One of Munro’s career highlights was winning the 2014 formula masters series and his dominance of the competition has seen him return to Asia this year as a driving coach in the series, grooming potential future formula one stars around his age and older.

Akurangi recovers from heart surgery FORMER CRUSADERS hooker John Akurangi is recovering after a risky heart surgery operation in Italy.

His friend, Massey Tuhakaraina, posted on Facebook that Akurangi’s surgery went well.

Akurangi, from Hastings, played for the Crusaders in 1997, as well the Chiefs and Blues before playing professionally in the United Kingdom for Leicester Tigers.

Crusaders chief executive Hamish Riach wished Akurangi a speedy recovery.

“He was a proud Crusader. Our thoughts are with his family as they battle through this challenge,” he said.

Akurangi, 45, who has been coaching rugby in Italy since 2010, underwent an operation on his heart in Milan after fighting for his life after a torn aorta.

He suffered a life-threatening heart attack in 2010, became unwell while in Dubai fundraising for the J9 Foundation.

He was a business consultant in Australia, where he played a bouncer on the hit show Underbelly. He secured a coaching job in Milan in 2010.

Akurangi coached several teams in Europe and most recently was head coach of NZ Invitational XV – a team Jerry Collins captained before his death.
