By Grant Bryant THE BOTTLE store worker bashed over the head by a young robber says it will be hard to forgive and forget.

A 16-year-old yesterday pleaded guilty to the robbery of Woolston Super Liquor in which Gursharan Singh was hit over the head five times with bottles.

The attack, caught on CCTV footage, shocked many when it was shown on TV news.

In court yesterday, the youth apologised through a letter.

“I hope you and your family can forgive me. I will work

hard to make sure this does not happen to anyone else,” the letter read.

He said he was heavily under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

The 16-year-old who has been granted permanent name suppression was sentenced to six months supervision while in residence for the aggravated robbery on August 29.

But Mr Singh who was alone in the store at the time said forgiving and forgetting would be a difficult process.

“Forgiving is easy and not so easy at the same time,” he told The Star yesterday.

Dan Carter – ‘I used to cry all the time’ On the eve of his departure to play in France, Dan Carter reveals to English newspaper Daily Telegraph that many of his games ended in tears HE’S ONE of the toughest and greatest first-fives in rugby history, but Dan Carter has admitted he used to “cry all the time” playing rugby when he was younger.

Quoted in the UK Daily Telegraph, Carter said his small stature caused him plenty of pain as a young player, having to regularly tackle opponents much larger than him – a clash which often ending in tears.

“I loved the games, but I didn’t love every part of them,” said Carter.

“I used to cry all the time, probably two or three times a game, because I was so small and my opponents so huge by comparison. But I would always just go on tackling.”

“Tackling those monsters hurt like hell, and I hated it. There would be times that I would just completely muck it up and get flattened, but that’s how you learn at that age. I still maintain that my technique came out of that period, a tiny kid always trying to tackle giants.”

Carter credited the hours spent perfecting his craft on areas such as tackling as the big reason why

he became one of the great All Blacks.

“For all the rugby I played competitively as a kid, though, it was dwarfed by the hours I spent playing with my mates. That’s what I put my skill-set down to – those countless hours after school.

“There was a section alongside ours where my parents grew gherkins, bottling them to sell for a little extra cash. Then one summer my dad planted grass, so from then on we effectively had a rugby field alongside our house.

That was our afternoon ritual for nearly a decade. I wonder how my life might have turned out if they’d never made that sacrifice. I likely wouldn’t have played nearly so much, and might never have acquired the skills I did without that endless repetition,” says Carter.

“Those games we played for pure pleasure were probably the reason I became an All Black. We were essentially running drills without knowing it: that’s where I learned to tackle, where I learned to pass, where I learned to kick.”

In spite of the early tears, Carter’s years of youth rugby set him up perfectly for his lengthy career as an All Blacks star.

“I wasn’t aspiring to be an All Black back then; it was pure youthful enjoyment and fun.

That’s where I built up the base of skills that has helped me through 13 years of professional rugby.”

Property owners challenge EQC repair standards

AN ACTION group made up of 150 property owners with unresolved earthquake repairs yesterday filed High Court papers they hope could drastically alter all repair standards.

The EQC Action Group, spearheaded by lawyer Peter Woods has three major clarifications of EQC’s statutory obligations in its sights.

It also seeks to tighten tolerance on slanting floors after EQC adopted a Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment guideline that floors only need to be remediated to below 50mm of being level.

“This is all about acceptable standards of repair,” Mr Woods said.

“At the top EQC is saying or acknowledging their standards of repair might need change, but at ground level they’re applying different rules.

The EQC Act states the definition of ‘replacement value’ is Peter Woods ‘when new’ and compliant with the building code, but EQC repairs basically will only bring anything up to a pre-quake condition,” he said.

Another major point of the action was to ensure EQC would pay for necessary work to undamaged parts of a house – for instance repairs to an interior wall might involve stripping old electrics and rewiring. In this situation EQC would not pay for any of the wiring as it was not

damaged in the quake, Mr Woods said.

“We are asking the court to declare that EQC is liable to pay for necessary work to undamaged parts of a house for overall earthquake repairs, which has big implications for those with monolithic cladding repairs and water tightness issues.”

Another target point was tightening up the provision in the EQC act that stipulated repairs did not have to be carried out to exact standards “if circumstances did not allow.”

The group had taken previous action, including asking EQC to partner in a joint press release acknowledging agreed changes, which EQC had not agreed to.

Mr Woods is a partner in law firm Anthony Harper – a company an EQC spokesman said had not responded to recent correspondence.

“EQC has continued to invite Anthony Harper to engage directly with us to resolve the concerns of their individual clients. In this regard, EQC has been commu-

nicating with Anthony Harper for nearly two years, but the law firm has yet to provide EQC with the concerns of each individual claim.”

EQC had not received contact from the law firm in nearly two months and Anthony Harper was yet to respond to a recent letter reiterating EQC’s stance that the current High Court action or issuing a joint press release would resolve the issue.

“In November 2013 we clarified EQC’s approach to repairing houses, which explains each property has to be considered on a case by case basis,” the spokesman said.

In response to this Mr Woods said the last letter the company sent to EQC was on September 22 and EQC only sent a response on October 30.

“The reason they haven’t heard from us since September 22 is that it took them well over a month to respond to our letter, then that was just a repeat of what they said previously, which wasn’t even worth responding to.”

THE FATHER of Christchurchraised Cara-Joy Purkis says signs are looking good to get the critically injured 30-yearold home soon.

Speaking from her bedside in a Lubbock, Texas, hospital, Graham Purkis said very slow incremental improvements by Cara-Joy (right) were giving hope to family and loved ones.

“Cara has an eye response to light and occasional glimpses of recognition, so it’s not like she’s coming out of a coma and saying ‘hi dad it’s nice to see you’ – there’s a long way to go,” he said.

Ms Purkis was hit full-force by an 18-wheeler truck after she drove through a stop sign after dropping her boyfriend off at an airport almost a month ago.

The beaches are among 15 popular swimming spots around Banks Peninsula to have had their water quality graded by Environment Canterbury.

The popular swimming spots were both graded ‘good’, as were most of the others, including Cass Bay, Rapaki Bay, Governors Bay, Paradise Bay, Church Bay, Diamond Harbour, Wainui, Tikau Bay, French Farm, Duvauchelle and Takamatua.

The pick of the bunch was Glen Bay, near Akaroa, which was the only one to achieve a grading of ‘very good.’

was graded ‘fair’.

For the third season in a row, none of the beaches were graded ‘poor’.

The water quality at popular swimming sites is monitored each summer to assess conditions, trends and public health risks from contact with the water.

Water quality has also been monitored at 13 of the peninsula’s streams, nine of which were graded as ‘fair’.

However, three streams – Living Springs, Teddington and Pawsons – were graded as ‘poor’.

Only Zephyr Stream, in Governors Bay, was graded as ‘good’.

Overall, the situation has improved since 2008-2009 when 11 of the streams were graded as either ‘poor’ or ‘very poor’.

N-Bomb victim makes full recovery

A CHRISTCHURCH man left in a coma after an organ shutdown cut off oxygen to his brain for 10 minutes while on an N-Bomb trip has made a full recovery.

The man known only by his first name, Michael, was part of a group of five friends who took the synthesised drug in early October.

His four friends were released after a short hospital stay, but Michael remained on life support

Councillor numbers likely to increase

Fishing deck proposed for pier

THE CITY council decided yesterday for more city councillors, and more wards, but its decision could still be overturned.

After hours of debate yesterday, it approved a final plan for 16 city councillors, up from the current 13, and 16 wards split from the current eight.

It also decided to keep Banks Peninsula as a stand alone ward, rather than combining it with Sumner and parts of the Port Hills.

But that decision goes against Local Government Commission recommendations.

That means it will need to be put to the commission for final approval early next year.

The commission asked the city council to make the ward bigger, because too few people lived there.

Under the plan, almost all the city wards have more than 20,000 people living in them.

But the Banks Peninsula ward has just over 8000 residents.

But during the hearings residents said it should be a separate ward, because it was such a large area and the issues there were different to issues in the city.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel said at the meeting yesterday that their points were valid.

IN THE CHAMBERS: Mayor Lianne Dalziel voted yesterday to keep the Banks Peninsula ward separate after submissions from residents.

She said the Banks Peninsula District Council had merged with the city council expecting to be properly represented.

“It’s a bigger issue about how you combine a large urban city council with a small district council, and I don’t believe that as a country we’ve actually done that very well,” she said.

The Halswell ward also falls short of other wards with almost 19,500 residents, but it is expected to grow a lot because of new subdivisions there.

Changes to the borders of other wards were also made.

There will be seven community boards, but some will include three wards and three city councillors, while others will just have two.

The bigger community boards are Halswell-Hornby-Riccarton, Fendalton-Waimairi-Harewood and Linwood-Central-Heathcote.

The smaller boards are Spreydon-Cashmere, Burwood-Coastal and Papanui-Innes.

Two community board members will be elected to represent each ward except Wairewa, which will have only one.

Public appeals or objections to the plan can be made to the Local Government Commission from Friday this week.

The commission is due to make a decision early next year.

A WAY to tackle problems with fishing off the New Brighton Pier could be in the works.

A fishing deck was suggested at the BurwoodPegasus Community Board meeting on Monday night, by city councillor David East.

The proposed platform would be built slightly under the height of the rest of the pier, allowing people to walk past the platform freely without having to worry about avoiding it.

Cr East was in talks with an architect who was drawing up a design for a fishing deck or platform coming off the pier.

“I have been talking to an architect who has started to draw up an idea, for free, of what a fishing platform could look like coming off New Brighton Pier.

“Although I would like to see it built above (the pier), I don’t think that’s totally viable. It would have to be built slightly under the pier,” Cr East said.

There was an outcry from eastern suburbs residents recently, after it had been suggested that fishing off the pier should be banned all together.

Health professionals wade into debate

HEALTH professionals are worried a smaller QE II replacement pool will not meet the needs of the community in the east suburbs, and could contribute to poor health.

Travis Medical Centre practice manager Linda Adams wrote about her concerns in a letter to the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board, which was presented to them on Monday.

She asked for a second pool to be considered at QE II’s replacement, the Eastern Sports and Recreation Centre.

“We are deeply concerned that only one 25m pool will under provide and not meet the more urgent needs of the community,” she said.

She said QE II had been used by many older residents to keep fit, and by children to exercise and

learn to swim.

With two high schools on the site, she was worried one pool would not be big enough for students, lessons and general community use.

She said an extra pool of at least 25m was needed.

Her call was backed up by Emma Jamieson, who presented a petition signed by 100 Dallington residents calling for a 35m pool.

She got a standing ovation from the public gallery after her speech at the meeting, voicing concerns over the centre’s ability to service the whole of eastern Christchurch.

She expressed her anger and frustration to the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board that a 35m pool would not be considered.

Ms Jamieson asked for the extra pool to be added into the plans, which at the moment consists of

a 25m pool, learn to swim, leisure and spa pools.

The meeting room had about 25 people from the public in attendance and almost all were on their feet after Ms Jamieson finished her deputation.

She also told the board that she would be requesting all available information from the city council on the matter, and requested the board’s support.

The board thanked Ms Jamieson for her deputation and discussed the points she made in her deputation.

They said they would continue working on the project and respond to the points she made.

Men fighting on tracks force train to stop

By Grant Bryant DRUNK MEN fighting on a railway crossing forced a freight train to grind to a halt, sparked a police callout, and a warning from KiwiRail.

A witness to the near miss on Harewood Rd last Thursday afternoon said the area around the old Papanui railway station acted as a busy thoroughfare, but was also a regular hangout for drunks.

On Thursday afternoon the wit-

ness saw three men gather and start drinking around lunchtime.

“Around 5pm we heard a train approaching and it was just blasting its horn,” he said.

“We turned around to see what that’s all about and two of these guys are scuffling right in the middle of the tracks. I have no idea how the train driver saw them from so far away, but he stopped within 10m of them. They were still faced off with each other, then when he

yelled: ‘Get off the f***ing tracks,’ they turned and started arguing with him. There was a bit of a stalemate, then he must’ve told them the cops were coming, because they disappeared after that.”

A spokesperson for KiwiRail, the State-owned enterprise responsible for rail operations said such actions were highly dangerous.

“The train that stopped at Papanui due to trespassers on the track last Thursday afternoon

was a freight service arriving into Christchurch. The police were called to remove the trespassers from the track before giving clearance for the train to continue. As the train was able to continue its journey, KiwiRail hasn’t taken any further actions, however, this is another reminder of the dangers of trespassing on the rail network.”

Train drivers could take up to 1km to stop a moving train, KiwiRail confirmed.

The death of a pedestrian killed after being hit by a TranzAlpine train travelling between Christchurch and Greymouth about 8am on Monday is not being treated as suspicious.

Emergency services were called to Kerrs Rd, Rolleston, after the incident.

The train’s engineer was given time off.

Fraudsters & scammers

Be wise as the serpent In the year so far, New Zealanders have already reported more than $11m lost to scammers. As Fraud Awareness Week kicks off, Consumer NZ offers advice about how to avoid scams and what to do if you spot them.

A CHRISTCHURCH woman in her 80s recently opened her door to what she thought was a Contact Energy salesperson.

They told her she had an overdue bill, and would be disconnected if she didn’t pay right away.

She gave her eftpos card and pin to the person, believing they were trustworthy.

But the person was a scammer, and stole several thousand dollars from her.

As technology advances, there are more and more ways for scammers and fraudsters to target you.

But when boiled down, their techniques are often very simple.

Whether they are knocking on your door or sending a request through a smartphone app, scammers will usually try to get hold of your money or information by convincing you they are something they’re not.

The theme of Fraud Awareness Week this year is scammers who pretend to be from legitimate companies.

Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin said people needed to be aware of the underhand practices scammers used.

“Consumers need to be certain they’re dealing with legitimate companies before finalising a transaction or responding to an urgent request,” she said.

But Nic Gibbs of Computer Geek Services in Papanui, said people were getting more savvy

“People seem to know about scams now, whereas a year and a half ago most people were oblivious. They didn’t Nic Gibbs realise people calling and saying they were from Microsoft might not be.

But often now people cotton on that it is a scam.”

He started working in the industry about 15 years ago, when the big threat was computer viruses.

He said almost everyone these days had effective anti-virus software and kept it updated.

“When I started, most of what I was doing was wiping viruses from computers. Now viruses crop up maybe once a month.”

Some common scams include

• Boiler room brokers Often these scammers will call offering you a one-off deal, like shares which they promise will give huge returns.

Often these scams are quite professional, and they can give you paperwork and slick looking websites and certificates apparently backing their claims. They will often try to pressure you into making a deal on the spot.

Plenty of scammers will use ‘limited-time deals’ to try to convince you to fork over cash without doing your research.

The infamous “white van scam” has been spotted in car parks around Christchurch.

Scammers pose as salespeople selling branded home theatre systems, which they say are being sold at bargain prices because they have too much stock.

But when people get the systems home, they find out the products are cheap imitations and their receipt and warranty is worthless.

• Cold-calling computer technicians A former Christchurch resident was called last week by a man who said he did security work for Spark and Vodafone, and told her, her computer had been hacked.

He talked her through how to give him remote access to her computer, and then brought up files apparently showing her computer had been hacked.

Then he asked for $149 for protecting her computer.

At that stage, she became suspicious and turned the computer off.

The scammer called back, but she refused to pay anything and contacted Vodafone and the police.

This type of scammer will usual-

ly try to convince you to give them your passwords or allow them remote access to your computer.

But they won’t always ask for money.

Sometimes they are looking for information they can steal from your device once they get control, like bank account details.

• Phishing scammers In March 2011, scammers took advantage of the earthquakes to try to scam Cantabrians.

They sent out emails which looked like they came from ANZ Bank.

They included a link which claimed to provide more information about the earthquake recovery process.

In reality it was a scam, designed to get people’s banking details.

The scammers often pretend to be banks, and can look very official and give all sorts of reasons why they need your details.

Some will be disguised as a satisfaction survey or a competition, but are really just a way to get your personal details.

• Phony Facebook vendors Consumer Affairs put out a scam alert this year, warning people to be suspicious when buying things from Facebook pages.

It had reports of fake goods turning up, or things bought never arriving at all.

And the police have warned people could be prosecuted if they buy items which were stolen.

Facebook posts and profiles can be deleted, and they don’t have the same protections in place that sites like Trade Me have.

• Ransomware A Christchurch resident went to police this year after she got a message saying she had been watching child pornography on her phone.

The message claimed to be from the police, and said her phone had been locked until a fine was paid.

It took names and numbers from people in the phone’s contacts, and threatened to contact those people and ask them to be witnesses in a court action if the money was not paid.

When faced with the prospect of family, friends or coworkers being contacted, many victims paid up.

Netsafe said the scam had become more common this year, and the malware often came disguised as a downloadable video player.

CONSUMER TIPS FOR PROTECTING YOURSELF • Never reply to any email asking you to confirm your bank or credit card details. Legitimate organisations will never ask you to do this. The same applies if you’re asked for this information over the phone.

• If you’re buying goods online, check the billing process is secure (characterised by https:// and a padlock symbol in the URL). Ensure the business has a physical address and telephone number.

• Research the firms you’re dealing with. Use the Companies

• Don’t be swayed by coldcallers promising bargain deals or instant riches if you sign up on the spot. Legitimate companies will give you time to do your research.

• If you think you’ve been scammed, report it to police. If you’ve handed over your bank details, contact your bank and immediately suspend your account.

Barrier planned for sports field to stop boy racers A BARRIER will be put up around the Burnside Park sports fields, which have been repeatedly ripped up by boy racers.

Cars have been driven onto the park through a gap between the trees.

They have ripped up the sports fields so badly football and cricket training has sometimes had to be cancelled.

In August, Burnside West University Cricket chairman Paul O’Flathery and FC2011 chief executive Eddie Cropley asked the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board to help.

They spent about $20,000 per year maintaining the cricket blocks, and the vandals could sometimes do more than $1000 of damage.

City council staff have been working since to work out the cost of a barrier and find funding for it.

They hope to have the barrier built there before the end of the year.

Bus driver hurt after attempted robbery

Burnside Park to get fitness equipment

AFTER MORE than a year of community fundraising, public fitness equipment is set to be installed at Burnside Park before the end of the year.

Concept plans for the fitness trail, which will be similar to the one in Hagley Park, were approved by the city council last year.

But it did not have the $69,000 needed to build it.

The Commodore Airport Hotel has put $10,000 toward it, while the Fendalton-Waimairi Community Board has contributed more than $11,500.

That means the first two of four stations in the fitness trail can go ahead.

The fitness equipment has been bought and is due to be installed next month.

It includes a sit up bench, push up bars, gym rings, a stretching rail, a vertical ladder, stepper and chin up bars.

The third and fourth stations are expected to include a shoulder wheel, cross trainer, pull down exerciser, recumbent cycle, skier, leg press, parallel bars, monkey bars and a balance beam.

But funding for those stations still needs to be found.

A BUS driver suffered a gash to the head as he fought off two 15-year-olds trying to steal his money tin in New Brighton.

The attempted robbery took place on Monday around 3.30pm on Sandy Ave, New Brighton, outside Rawhiti School.

The driver suffered a gash to the side of the head after one of the

boys attacked him. Unable to get the money they fled the scene.

The bus driver, an employee of Go Bus took the incident in his stride, and was back at work yesterday.

A police spokesman said there had been reports two boys matching the description hanging around Rawhiti School, but a school spokeswoman de-

nied any link.

“This did not involve any of our children, and the only relationship is that the bus was parked outside the school.”

Police told The Star that both boys fled the scene along New Brighton Rd. They were both described as Caucasian, with one carrying a scooter and wearing a hat.

Woods backs call to restore democracy to ECan

LABOUR CANTERBURY Rebuild spokeswoman Megan Woods has backed calls for Environment Canterbury to return to full democracy next year.

She has called for Cantabrians to “stand up for democracy”.

“There is no other region in the country that does not get to elect all of its regional council.

There is no reason that Canterbury should be the only ones not trusted to make this decision,” she said.

Government-appointed commissioners have run ECan since 2010, after the Government said its leadership was dysfunctional

and sacked the elected councillors.

The Government promised to restore full democracy in 2013.

But under a transitional arrangements bill currently before Parliament that would not happen until 2019.

Before that it would be run by a mix of elected councillors and appointed commissioners, who would be responsible for different things.

Public submissions on the bill will close tomorrow.

Dr Woods urged people to use the opportunity to make a loud

and clear statement.

“Local people were outraged when they were stripped of their vote – and now they’ve got an opportunity to make their voices heard,” she said.

Christchurch has one of the highest dog ownership rates in New Zealand, with more than 35,000 dogs and about 29,000 owners. Jack Price asked what people thought

We were really uncomfortable, the kids were irritated.

Walking around is fine, but, they must be near their owners, just running by themselves I would feel uncomfortable.”

Susan Howard, wholesaler, of Avonside: “There’s going to be a lot of people who are scared of dogs or have small children who would run up to pat a dog thinking that it’s friendly and that dog could nip the child or an elderly person. A lot of dog owners don’t carry around plastic bags to clean up after their dogs and that would be a city council concern.”

Dylan Goldsmith, student, of New Brighton: “I think it would be okay, so long as they’re on leashes with their owners, they’re not really harming anybody. Dog faeces could be a big problem as well, dog owners have a responsibility to clean it up.”

Ben Waghorn, retailer, of Cashmere: “I believe that dogs should be allowed to, so long as the owners pick up after them and keep them on the leash, nice and tight when other people are around. I never knew that they weren’t allowed in the city!”

It’s only November but the sun is cranking up, which means it is time to pack away your boots and court shoes and step into some new summer sandals.

The spirit of The island has a distinct and welcoming lack of artifice, discovers Sandy Myhre NORFOLK ISLAND’s intriguing history is the stuff of rugged folklore.

The small fragment of isolated rock sitting roughly half way between Australia and New Zealand was first occupied by Eastern Polynesians around 1000 years ago and for some obscure reason later abandoned even by these hardy settlers.

Captain Cook arrived there in 1774 and just over a decade later it became known as the “hell of the Pacific” as an Australian penal colony, a “punishment short of death” for the most extreme convicts, before being forsaken once more.

Queen Victoria allocated the island to the descendants of the mutineers from HMS Bounty and in 1856 nearly 200 Pitcairn Islanders, their Tahitian wives and offspring arrived to start their new lives. More than a third of the current population on Norfolk can directly trace their ancestry back to the Bounty settlers. Christian,

None of this accounts for the remarkable tranquillity and friendliness of the place today.

Hilli-Goat Farm above Anson Bay, for example, is run by Emily Ryves and her family, and producing not just “the happiest goats you will ever meet” for artisan cheese and milk, but locally grown beef and vegetables. E ALL KNOW that, to get a higher return from the bank, we have to accept some volatility. I recently found some Australian research that is really helpful for advisers and investors: ■ the average return since 1990 is 9.2-plus per cent a year ■ number of positive years is 19 ■ number of negative years is five ■ Since 1926, there have been only three severe downturns — 1929, 1972 and 2008

The NZ dollar, over, under, sideways, down One factor that causes a lot of volatility is the NZ dollar, and it has been all over the place this year. Anywhere from 86 to 66 US cents, from 50 to 41 British pence, 98 to 88 Australian cents, and anywhere in between.

That’s up to a 20 per cent variation, which is huge.

We can only partly mitigate this by having 50 per cent NZ dollars hedged to overseas shares, and 100 per cent NZ dollars hedged to global bonds — but only partly.

Patience needed Most pilots will tell you that “flying is often 98 per cent boredom and 2 per cent terror”, and the terror is usually over within a few minutes (if you are still alive).

With investments, the “terror” patches are well and truly outnumbered by the good years but they do last as long as 12 to 18 months. They don’t pass quickly like they do when flying aeroplanes, so investors need to be patient.

The market is no place for short-term investors, no one should buy shares unless it is for four to five years minimum.

What about future returns?

lots of theories abound. The “weighing machine” is one reason why investors need to be patient and give shares time to work.

The “demand of reward for taking risk” has a lot to do with market pricing, and is one reason why: ■ bonds have outperformed cash by 1-2 per cent over 90 years ■ shares have outperformed bonds by 3-5 per over 90 years Ben Graham and Eugene Fama have made huge contributions to the understanding of markets and how they work. I would love to put it all together in a succinct summary, but I think I had better leave that to the academics and Nobel prize winners.

Risk, volatility & loss When you put a lot of money in

any single investment, there is always the risk of making a real loss. For example: ■ if you put $20,000 in Pumpkin Patch shares two years ago, you would now have $2340 ■ if you invested $20,000 in Babcock & Brown bonds, you would now have zero

Volatility is likely, real loss is not if . . .

If you buy quality and diversify widely, you will get volatility, but are unlikely to suffer a real loss.

Our portfolios contain about 5000 shares and 500 bonds on and offshore. The bond funds we use only buy investment grade from BBB to AAA rated bonds.

The share funds are “filtered” extensively, leaving out poorly governed and/or politically unstable countries, companies in distress, or too new, or do not trade often (illiquid) or profits

regulated by governments, or real estate trusts, and so on.

Any portfolio containing shares will be volatile but, if they are high-quality funds overall and extensively diversified, the risk of permanent loss is minimal. Sure the portfolio will go down and up — more ups than downs historically — but, unless the whole world financial system collapses, your money is unlikely to go away.

So high-quality investments coupled with extensive diversification means real loss is unlikely.

“Loose brushed/unwashed potatoes are 40c a kg cheaper than washed potatoes at my supermarket. I buy loose brushed potatoes once a fortnight but mostly eat brown rice now as it is about half the price of a potato per serve.

“I buy family packs of nonperishables and either break them down or store them. For example, toilet paper, instead of

buying a four-roll pack I’ll buy an 18-roll pack (saving $3.50, or more if it’s on special).”

Kings bowlers need to be on top of game

MUST WIN: Canterbury Kings will be looking to end their three game losing streak when they take on the Auckland Aces today.

BOWLING WELL will be crucial for the Canterbury Kings if they hope to end their current three-game loosing streak when they take on the Auckland Aces today.

Head coach Gary Stead said his bowlers will need to be on their game, with the Eden Park outer oval known for its large scores.

“It is the type of ground you expect to see quite a few sixes hit so it is really about how well our bowlers adapt on the day,” he said.

Stead said his bowlers had good patches in their last game but would need to be more consistent against the Aces.

“I felt we bowled well in our

first 10-11 overs against Northern Districts, but then dropped off in the last 10 – it comes back to making sure we win those key moments.

“The Aces have a couple of key players (Colin Munro and Colin de Grandholme) in a bit of form and we will have to be clear on how we bowl, in particular, to those guys,” he said.

However, Stead said he has been pleased with left-arm quick Ed Nuttall in his first two games of T20.

“Ed bowled very well and with some good pace. He showed with the last game, getting the wickets of their two openers that he can do the job for us,” he said.

In spite of his openers having inconsistencies with the bat, Stead said they wont be changing

their tactics going into today’s game.

“Players like Ronnie have a free licence when it comes to his batting and it is all about him making good decisions.

“I think when you curb the natural instinct that he has, he starts to play a role that he isn’t familiar with and that isn’t what we want from him,” he said.

As expected following a loss, Stead said there has been an edge to his side going into today’s game.

“We just have to make sure we enjoy ourselves. T20 is a tense enough game as it is, so when you heap that extra pressure on yourself it tends to make things worse. As always we just need to win the small margins and we should come out on top,” he said.

Gamble nominated for rugby’s age grade player of the year

CANTERBURY under-19 flanker Charlie Gamble has been nominated for New Zealand Rugby age grade player of the year.

The award will be handed out at the 2015 Steinlager Rugby Awards ceremony to be held in Auckland on December 11.

Gamble said he got the nod a couple of weeks ago and didn’t even tell his parents.

“I got an email a couple of weeks after the under-19s tournament so had to keep it quiet. It was really tough but now that everyone knows they are all really stoked for me,” he said.

Gamble is nominated alongside Alex Fidow and Akira Io-

ane and said being in the same category as a player like Ioane was a real honour.

“Stoked to be in the same class as someone like Akira, he has had a great season with Auckland, the Blues and the under-20s.”

In spite of being up for an individual award, Gamble said he is happy to represent his national champion under-19s teammates.

“I wouldn’t be nominated for this award without them and I know they are all really stoked for me as well.”

Gamble will be attending a development camp next month as part of the NZ under-20s wider squad in a bid to make the final cut for the World Championship

team to go to England next year.

Four other Cantabrian players are also nominated for awards.

Dan Carter and Kendra Cocksedge will be looking to take home their respective player of the year awards after both received World Rugby player of the year awards earlier this month.

Canterbury lock Dominic Bird is up against Ardie Savea and George Moala for ITM Cup player of the year ITM Cup premiership winning Canterbury coach Scott Robinson is nominated for coach of the year alongside All Blacks coach Steve Hansen and Super Rugby winning coach Jamie Joseph.

IN THE RUNNING: Canterbury under-19 player Charlie Gamble has been nominated for New Zealand Rugby age grade player of the year.

Pride look to step up

By Jaimie Keay MAINLAND PRIDE are one game away from one of their main goals – to go through the season undefeated.

Head coach Mike De Bono said it is a real driving force behind his team.

“It is why they have got that never-say-die attitude to win those close games, because they have set themselves such high targets.

“We understand how to win.

It is the pedigree of not just our senior players but the juniors that have come into the environment and learnt from the senior heads,” he said.

De Bono said nothing short of a win in Dunedin on Sunday will be acceptable in their final round robin match.

“The girls are well aware of the importance of this game especially after last weekend’s performance.

It is a real motivation for us. South have nothing to lose and they will be out there to get their first win of the season,” he said.

De Bono said his players will be looking to step up both on attack and defence this weekend.

“Last weekend we were defensively sound again, but we will still work on our defensive structures for this weekend to make sure we

don’t concede needlessly.

“We also need to show a bit more of our attacking threats. We really haven’t scored as many goals this season as we would have liked,” he said.

In the last two matches, the Pride have found themselves chasing the win late in the game and De Bono said it has shown the team’s character.

“It has shown a real resilience from us. We are two-time champions and the last two weeks have really shown we can play for a full 90 minutes,” he said.

Crushers fourth

SPEEDWAY: The Canterbury Crushers finished fourth in the Mainland Stockcar Championships held at Woodford Glen Speedway on Saturday. The title was taken out by the Palmerston North KB’s Cowboys, with Tasman Thunder in second and the Eastern States Titans from Blenheim in third. Next up for the Crushers will be another team event in Nelson on December 11-12.

Bell qualifies for Spain

DUATHLON: Canterbury athlete Sam Bell has won the men’s national standard distance title at the Auckland duathlon on Sunday. Bell won the title by 3min 27sec from nearest competitor Johan Vanhoovels in a time of 1hr 59min 28sec. Claiming the title has seen Bell qualify for the NZ age group team to compete in next year’s world championships to be held in Spain.

De Bono said he will not be resting players ahead of the final and will be fielding his strongest team possible.

“The girls have put a mantra on things – to achieve success is by putting out our strongest team. We have blooded a number of young players throughout the year and we will do the same this weekend but not to the detriment of getting a result,” he said.

Win for United

FOOTBALL: Canterbury United have opened their 2015/16 ASB Premiership campaign with a 3-0 victory over the Wellington Phoenix reserve side. Ferrymead Bays striker Michael White scored a double within 3min before a late strike by Juan Chang in the 84th minute to secure the win.

Next up for the Canterbury side is a tough home game against current Oceania League runners-up Team Wellington at ASB Football Park on Sunday before taking on the twotime defending champion Auckland City the following week.

A win on Sunday will confirm a week off before they host grand final in Christchurch on December 6.
