Final funding push for INSIDE iconic timeball station New World Redcliffs opens – p3

The iconic Lyttelton Timeball Station may yet rise from the rubble if $800,000 can be raised.

Heritage New Zealand told the Bay Harbour News it has raised $2.6m of the $3.4m needed to rebuild the Lyttelton Timeball Station.

Fundraising team leader Brendon Beale said Heritage New Zealand is planning a

major project in the New Year to find the remaining $800,000.

Mr Beale has enlisted the Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Community Board to help raise funds.

The Lyttelton Timeball Station was destroyed in the February 2011 earthquake and demolished in May 2011.

Built in 1876, the timeball station provided ships in Lyttelton Harbour with a timekeeping service. It

marked noon by dropping the timeball down the tower every day, until destroyed by the earthquake.

Mr Beale said the hope was to use as much of the original material from the collapsed station as possible.

“The plan is to rebuild the timeball tower and mechanism, together with the reinstatement of the flagpole, landscaping and access pathways in their original position,” he said.

Community board member Ann Jolliffe said she was excited at the prospect of the timeball station returning once more.

A survey conducted in 2012 showed 98 per cent of respondents agreed that the timeball station should be rebuilt.

“The thing is that it was an icon sitting up there on the hill. It was the only timeball station that was working in the Southern Hemisphere,” she said.

New fire vehicle one step closer

Fundraising for the Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade’s new fourwheel drive vehicle has gone up a gear with a $10,000 donation.

The brigade’s 1960s Jeep broke down earlier this year, and since then the brigade has had to take its large fire truck up steep terrain to medical call outs.

This made response times slower.

Sumner Volunteer Fire Brigade deputy fire officer Darren Wright said a Sumner family had donated $10,000 towards the new vehicle.

He said the family had directly contacted the brigade, and wanted to remain anonymous.

The brigade has raised $19,000 of the total $35,000 it needed.

Other large donations include $5000 from the Sumner Redcliffs RSA Welfare Fund and $2500 from the SJ Charitable Trust.

The entire vehicle and kit will cost about $70,000 but the brigade already had $15,000 from previous fundraising following the earthquakes.

The brigade hoped the fire service would contribute about $10,000-$15,000.

Mr Wright said the brigade had now raised enough money to start thinking about getting the vehicle and had started discussions with vehicle suppliers.

In December, the New Zealand Fire Service and St John signed a Memorandum of Understanding which meant fire brigades would attend when someone went into

Fire crew unflappable in strong winds

BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD Sumner firefighters were unflappable when it came to saving a container art canvas from blowing away in gale force winds.

The volunteer fire brigade was called to the corner of Nayland St and Wakefield Ave on October 7 at about 2.14pm, after one of

the container art canvasses came loose.

Chief fire officer Daryl Sayer said the canvas was flapping in the north-west wind and posed a hazard to those trying to pass.

They called for back up and closed the intersection.

“Due to the intensity of the wind, we called for a second

appliance (from Lyttelton) for manpower, and were able to bring it under control, before cutting it down, and saving it from being damaged,” Mr Sayer said.

After waiting for extra crew to arrive, and deciding the safest way to manage it, the job took about 45 minutes, he said.

Wright said the eyelets on the canvas had given way and it was “lashing around”.

The canvas was a photograph of Sumner beach, which had won a photography competition over summer, he said.

He said about 8-10 fire crew were there to get it under control.

Redcliffs supermarket opens

BY BRIDGET RUTHERFORD Today is the day Redcliffs residents have been waiting for.

Main Rd’s 1700 sq m New World will open its doors to customers at 9am today.

The official opening will include welcome speeches from Foodstuffs South Island property and retail development general manager Roger Davidson and owner-operator Julia Spence from 8.30am.

Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck will then cut the ribbon before it will officially open its doors to customers.

The original New World closed four and a half years ago following the February 2011 earthquakes due to irreparable damage.

New World Redcliffs owneroperator Julia Spence said it had taken a lot of people, time and commitment to get the supermarket rebuilt and ready for opening.

“There would be too many for me to count, there have been hundreds coming through the doors.”

For four and a half years Redcliffs residents had to travel to either Sumner or Ferrymead to get their groceries, she said.

“I think they’re very excited, we’ve been on site for two weeks now and we’ve had a couple of customers coming up the ramp and ready to shop.”

She said there were about 100 staff, who had all been doing on

site training in the build up to opening.

The majority of the staff were new, as about 90 per cent of the old supermarket’s staff had positions found for them in other New World stores after the earthquakes, she said.

“Being able to bring back a much needed supermarket to the community is just wonderful,” she said.

Ms Spence said the new threestorey supermarket will have five full-service and five self-service checkouts, and an underground car park with about 80 parks.

The top story has staff offices.

“You get a pretty good view from the second floor.”

Ms Spence knows her way around a supermarket, having worked in roles from the shop

floor through to owning and running Four Square Akaroa.

She is enjoying getting to know the locals and looks forward to getting involved in the community.

The store has a range of sustainability features such as LED lighting and CO2 refrigeration and wants to recycle as close to 100 per cent of waste as is feasibly possible.

Foodstuffs South Island property and retail development general manager Roger Davidson said New World Redcliffs was the final post-earthquake rebuild in Christchurch.

These included four rebuilds and three new builds of New World St Martins, Kaiapoi, Ilam, Wigram and Redcliffs; and PAK’nSAVE Rangiora and Wainoni.

Parking restrictions outside 23 Avoca Valley Rd, off Port Hills Rd, will be removed. The Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board decided to remove them at its meeting on Friday. Prior to the earthquakes there was a coffee shop there which meant the parking restrictions were needed, but it is no longer there and the land opposite has been red zoned. Removing the restrictions will mean residents in the area can park their vehicles by their properties.

Model UN grant

Sumner resident Esme Hall has been granted $500 towards the cost of representing New Zealand at The Hague International Model United Nations conference in January and February. The year 13 student will go on a threeweek tour prior to the conference which will go to New York, Geneva, Paris, Rome, Amsterdam and Vienna. The HagleyFerrymead Community Board decided to grant the money out of its Youth Development Fund at its meeting on October 7.

Halloween fundraiser

Governors Bay School is hosting a Halloween Hallabaloo on Saturday, October 31, from 2.30-5.30pm. Community trick or treating will follow at 5.45pm.

Lyttelton musician in line for multiple awards HERITAGE: St Saviour’s at Trinity has been recognised in this year’s Christchurch Civic Awards.

Recognition for efforts to retain church heritage Efforts to move St Saviour’s at Trinity to its new site in Lyttelton and retain its heritage have been recognised.

It received the award at a ceremony on October 13 in this year’s Christchurch Civic Trust Awards.

The Winchester St church received a Category B award for retaining an ecclesiastical building of significant heritage character on a Lyttelton heritage site.

The wooden St Saviour’s church originally stood on the corner of Brittan Tce and Simeon Quay before being moved to Cathedral Grammar School in 1976.

It was then damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and the school donated it back to the Lyttelton parish.

It was relocated and restored on the site of the former Holy Trinity Church, and officially opened in June.

Charlesworth Wetland Reserve also received a Category C commendation in the awards.

The Christchurch Civic Trust commended the Avon-Heathcote Estuary Ihutai Trust for its vision in promoting the sustainable ecological and recreational environment of an estuary wetland.

The reserve was officially opened in 2005 and is 20 ha in size.

Volunteers maintain the reserve in keeping it weed free and have planted more than 100,000 trees, shrubs and salt marsh plant seedlings.

From Lyttelton to a national stage – Marlon Williams (right) is taking the country’s music world by storm.

The former Lyttelton man is a front runner in this year’s Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards.

He was named a finalist in five categories at a ceremony held in Auckland last week.

His album, Marlon Williams, is up for Mentos Album of the Year, while his song Dark Child is a finalist in the Vodafone Single of the Year.

His single will come up against Avalanche City’s

Inside Out, Lorde’s Yellow Flicker Beat, Six60’s White Lines and Multi-Love by Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

He was also named a finalist in Best Male Solo Artist, Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Best Alternative album.

In the Album of the Year category Mr Williams will be up against Broods, Shihad, Six60 and Unknown Mortal Orchestra.

The winners will be announced at an awards ceremony at Auckland’s Vector Arena on November 18.

Volunteer firefighters celebrated

BY FRASER WALKER-PEARCE The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade service awards night was held last Sunday, and was attended by Port Hills National MP Nuk Korako.

Members and life members of the brigade were invited to the awards night to celebrate some of the volunteers’ long-

service awards.

Mr Korako congratulated all of the service award winners.

The brigade’s Chief Fire Officer Mark Buckley said the celebrations were low key and half way between a serious night and a light-hearted one.

He said: “The awards (received) ranged from a three year service certificate, to bars that were awarded for 27 and 35

years’ service . . . the bar goes on a medal that is awarded for 25 years’ service. For every two years after 25 years’ service, you receive another bar.”

Although this was not an award-winning night for Mr Buckley.

He said: “No, this year was my between year, next year I get another bar for 29 years service.”

Estuary Trust Restoration Projects..

Since 2005 the Estuary Trust has committed time and funding to assist the CCC Park Ranger division in their aim to turn this 80ha former farmland back into a fully functioning wetland ecosystem. A regular working session programme ensured a reliable and regular turn out of helpers to assist Andrew Crossland the park ranger for this project. Since then every Sunday afternoon volunteers have planted tree seedlings (earlier this year, tree seedling 100.000 was planted), weeded, staked, mulched, installed 6 seats, watered and pruned. In November a monitoring programme will check if animal species such as weta, moths and skinks approve of the work performed by displaying their presence. With weeds including grass, boneseed, gorse and convolvulus growing rampant this time of year more hands are desperately needed so if you can spare the occasional Sunday afternoon between 3 and 5pm we would welcome you with open arms, gloves and a spade.

Since August 2014 the Estuary Trust decided to add another restoration project and came to a similar arrangement with CCC park ranger Andrew Crossland to provide helpers to restore and enhance this Bay after years of neglect. Since then several hundred native seedlings have been planted and with help from a professional arborist some 15 years worth of pruning has been completed. With a grant received from Environment Canterbury bio-diversity Fund the Trust is able to purchase a substantial supply of more plants as well as having been able to purchase gloves, pruners and clippers for volunteer helpers. Weeding, mulching,small scale pruning and planting are on the agenda for the next 12 months. It is a large project and if you can spare the occasional Sunday afternoon between 2 and 4pm we would welcome you with open arms, gloves and a spade. Next restoration session is on Sunday, 18 October then again Sunday, 15 November.

Bus changes to sync with ferry

BY FRASER WALKER-PEARCE Buses to and from Lyttelton are now more in sync with the Diamond Harbour ferry timetable.

People using the ferry have been complaining the buses did not arrive, or leave Lyttelton around the same time, meaning long waits particularly in winter in the cold.

The changes were initiated on October 12 by Environment Canterbury.

The No 28 Lyttelton bus service that serviced Rapaki and Lyttleton has been replaced by the No 535 Lyttleton-Eastgate service, which will see an hourly bus service instead of the old

two-hour service.

It will be downsized from a 41-seater to a 17-seater bus.

The No 28 Lyttelton bus service has been increased from every 30min to every 20min.

More demand for ferry services has also been a factor in the bus changes.

Lyttelton-Mt Herbert Community Board chairwoman Paula Smith said the link with the ferry would be better and means less waiting in the cold.

Ms Smith said a number of residents were dependent on public transport.

“So for those that live there, it’s a great thing.”

The changes to the bus routes will cost $398,421

Walking festival to kick off The three week long Banks Peninsula Walking Festival starts on November 8.

The festival is an annual treat for walkers and trampers, and an attraction for those who want to see and learn a bit more about Banks Peninsula’s natural environment, history, geology and conservation sites.

Every year the festival adds new walks which offers access to private land or new conservation

areas which are developing in many parts of the peninsula.

The big story this year is that the brand new Rod Donald Hut tramp is opening as part of the Summit Walkway.

This year also sees many new walks open, including Hugh Wilson’s walk to the new Purple Peak, Curry Reserve above Akaroa, and Raupo Bay with Sam Hampton.

Several of the favourite walks

from previous years will also be repeated, such as the Backyards of Lyttelton walk with Sue-Ellen Sandilands, Urumau Reserve, Botanical Whakaraupo and Onawe Pa. For families with children, Raupo Bay is recommended, a half day walk on easy coastal terrain in eastern Banks Peninsula led by geologist and volcanologist Sam Hampton.

to do some tramping and stay in a tramping hut overnight, Sarah Pritchett will be offering “My First Overnight Tramp” at the Packhorse Hut. The festival is a co-production of Project Lyttelton, The Rod Donald Banks Peninsula Trust, Akaroa District Promotions and The Little River Wairewa Trust.

Repairs start on Lyttelton wastewater plant Earthquake repairs to the Lyttelton Wastewater Treatment Plant start next week.

The plant suffered structural damage to the basin during the earthquakes which has caused a build-up of grit and sand and a loss of capacity.

Repair work will begin on October 27 and will take about two weeks to complete.

The plant, which is below Sumner Rd between the container terminal and the coal stockpile yards of the Lyttelton Port Company, treats wastewater from the Lyttelton, Rapaki, Corsair Bay and Cass Bay communities.

It will be taken out of service while the repair work is underway.

The wastewater will still be treated on site through temporary tanks, followed by the usual ultraviolet disinfection process, before being discharged through an outfall pipeline into Lyttelton Harbour.

The primary sedimentation sludge will be removed and transported to the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant for processing.

The Lyttelton Wastewater Plant is expected to remain operational until 2021.

It is part of the Lyttelton Harbour Wastewater scheme which aims to halt the discharge of treated wastewater from the harbour by 2022 by pumping it to the Christchurch Wastewater Treatment Plant.

WE ARE ON THE MOVE AGAIN...

Sumner artist Kees Bruin has been painting for more than 30 years and his art is all over the world. Bridget Rutherford spoke to him about his current exhibition So Kees, you have an exhibition happening, can you tell me a bit about that?

The last time I had a major show was at the Christchurch Public Art Gallery in 2006, and that was an exhibition of a selection of work of everything I had ever done. Works were borrowed back by permission from various galleries from around the world. I haven’t really had a proper show of original work since then. There’s going to be giclees in the exhibition on canvas, and lacquered. A part of my business involves selling reproductions of my paintings as giclees.

Because of the market and trying to make a living I have been mindful of the dimensions of paintings that sell and the size people are more likely to purchase. I have been producing paintings for the last few years and have been getting very busy, but I’ve always considered these paintings as prototypes. I’d envisioned them as much bigger. I can show these really large giclees that most people haven’t really seen before.

They might have seen the original but they wouldn’t have seen these big ones. A few originals will be available for sale and about half will be made of these giclees.

How long have you been an artist for?

Pretty much since I graduated from the School of Fine Arts in 1977 with an honours degree majored in painting.

Why and when did you get into it?

I never dreamt that I would end up being an artist. After I finished I had to work so hard for it that I basically took a whole year off in 1978. I didn’t paint as much because I needed a break.

When I was finishing high school I had been talked into doing the preliminary course for getting into the School of Fine Arts by my art teacher, he’s been a very valuable mentor, Gavin Bishop.

My parents were fairly dismayed I was going to arts school. My father had the common belief that it was a dead-end job. Parents want their children to succeed more

Ever since graduating I indeed practice that educational background about doing works on series. I cover a huge range of genres. For example, I’ve concentrated on panoramic landscapes around Christchurch and other times I have explored still-life painting. The last few years I’ve been really keen in combining historical elements of painting with contemporary images.

What is the most one of your paintings has sold for?

A lot I don’t really know because some people have sold them on.

One that I do know of that was bought locally back in 2006, and was sold for $70,000. It was a painting of Caravaggio in the background and the back view of a contemporary looking woman.

That was sold on. I’ll be having a large giclee of that one in the exhibition.

I have seen some of your work, such as the naked lady on one of the containers in Sumner, what was the reasoning behind that one?

There’s so much meaning in it.

I believe in having meaning and truth in my images.

Whenever there is meaning or symbolism that I manage to express in it is a bonus. It comes out pretty automatically; I spend a lot of time researching. My learning informs my images. That painting was called Muse.

I live on the beach front at Sumner and when I open the front door I stare straight at the seawall.

I often see people walking up and down sometimes sitting on the wall. Obviously that girl was nude, you don’t see nude people sitting around on the sea wall, but I came across a little black and white picture of a famous model and she is sitting on a wall, not explicitly naked. I just thought it was the most elegant and beautiful look-

ing pose and so I changed that sea wall into a frieze.

It was controversial, did that cross your mind when you were painting it?

I didn’t think it was controversial; there are a lot more controversial than that one is. You see a lot more in modern day, and prime time television. Even though I did get flack.

It was vandalised and later stolen wasn’t it?

It was stolen a few times. Firstly it got vandalised and got white paint thrown on it. Then a wee while after that it was stolen mysteriously. Then a few months

later it was found neatly rolled up and placed at the bottom of one of those containers anonymously.

There was no more damage to it. Then it was put back up in its vandalised state and low and behold, a few months later a local person was jogging at about 4am and he noticed three guys in the process of stealing it and he actually stopped them from taking off with it. But they had pretty much taken it down completely and the eyelets were damaged. There was no time for it to be repaired. It belongs to the L’Estrange Art Gallery, so it’s still in collection.

You must have been gutted.

At first I was, I took it personally but quickly realised I didn’t need to take it personally. It stirred up a polarising effect. Most people have appreciated it, and people have come up to me on the street to tell me that. Never had anyone come up to me and say ‘I hate it’.

Has anything like that happened to any of your other work?

No, but I’ve never had a work reproduced on a scale of 6m by 6m before.

How long have you lived in Christchurch?

Since I was about 10. My family moved here from Central Otago in about 1964-65.

Where did you go to school?

I went to Linwood High School.

And where do you paint?

In the house that I live in – I use one of the rooms as a studio.

Aside from art, what else do you like to do in your spare time?

Until recent years I used to spend a lot of my spare time surfing, but recent years I haven’t been able to. I’m looking forward to going out a lot more in summer.

The exhibition opened yesterday at L’estrange Art Gallery, 53 Nayland St. It will run indefinitely.

Time to recheck your life jackets

Ahoy there.

With our weather improving, there are going to be more boats out and about on our waterways. It’s timely to remind the skippers out there that you are responsible not only for the vessel, but also the people on board.

In Canterbury, life jackets must be worn when a vessel is 6m or less. The life jackets must meet the required standards and fit correctly. We recommend a crotch strap, especially for young children, as there is far less risk of the life jacket going astray when the strap is fitted.

If the vessel is more than 6m long, approved life jackets must be carried and they must be of a size that is suitable for the passengers on board.

No matter what size the vessel, if there are tides, river flows, rough seas,

adverse weather or any other sign of risk to the vessel or its passengers, life jackets must be worn, no exceptions.

One thing to check at the beginning of each season, and then every time before use, is the condition of the life jackets. Are they in good condition, with no damage? If it’s one of the self-inflatable types, please ensure you check the following: Is the gas cylinder in good condition with no corrosion? Is it screwed in firmly? Check the outer cover and straps for wear. Orally inflate the bladder and leave for 24 hours and if it deflates, ensure you send it to an approved retailer for repair.

Remember children aged 12 or under should be wearing a life jacket with both crotch strap and collar, not the inflatable type.

So there you go, simple really. On that note, go out, enjoy our beautiful waterways and stay safe.

BRAND NEW: Cholmondeley Children’s Home has been officially reopened.

New $6m children’s centre reopens in Governors Bay After more than four years away from Governors Bay, Cholmondeley is back home.

The $6m Cholmondeley Children’s Centre was officially reopened by Prime Minister John Key on October 9.

The original homestead was demolished after it was significantly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake.

More than 300 different individuals, businesses, trusts and legacies donated their time and money to help rebuild the centre.

The centre is a home away from home for Canterbury children during times of crisis, providing respite care for children when

there is distress within the family, whether due to illness, a disaster, or other family stresses.

The new building includes child-size kitchen benches, windows at eye level for young children, door handles in easy reach, bedrooms for any configuration of siblings or friends and a sensory natural playground featuring an 8m eucalyptus tree log.

The centre, which relies on 70 per cent funding from the community with the balance from Government and investments, cares for children aged three to 12.

Art funds for facility FAMILY TIE: The family of the late Geoff Swinard visited the reopened Cholmondeley Children’s Centre on October 7. Mr Swinard founded the Sculpture on the Peninsula event to support Cholmondeley, Governors Bay in 2000. He died later that year. His daughter Greer, mother Hazel, sister Adrienne Hall and widow Jane, visited The Geoff Swinard Wing at Cholmondeley, which is named after him. Sculpture on the Peninsula is a contemporary sculpture exhibition held every two years. It is the largest sculptural exhibition in the South Island, and proceeds from the event are donated to Cholmondeley, Governors Bay. In 2013, more than $75,000 was raised, and it has raised more than $500,000 for the centre since it began. This year’s Sculpture on the Peninsula will take place on November 6-8 at Loudon Farm, Teddington on Banks Peninsula.

New direction for popular music store The long-established Christchurch music store, Begg’s Music, is heading in an exciting new direction. As from the end of October, the store will be doing business from its new premises in Sydenham – operating as an outlet store.

“The main reason for the move is that we need more space,” says Grant Bargrove, who has owned and run the popular music store for almost 30 years.

One of the city’s oldest and most respected businesses, Begg’s dates back to the 1800s and since then has been providing instruments and other musical requirements for generations of keen musicians.

The store moved into South City four years ago, after the earthquakes severely damaged the Colombo Street building it had occupied for the previous 25 years. The move to the new, larger premises this month allowing the change to the outlet concept, will mean much cheaper prices for customers, says Grant.

Almost all the stock will be directly imported

by Begg’s Music and displayed in an industrial environment, which will see examples of the various instruments on display and the bulk of the stock boxed up ready for customers to pick up and take home.

With the larger premises providing more storage space, Begg’s Music will be getting back into pianos, says Grant.

“We will be bringing them in directly by the container load. The interest in pianos has reignited, and we will have the space to showcase them, plus the building will be temperature controlled for the pianos.”

Begg’s Music is also a supplier of Fender guitars, and will have an extensive range at the new outlet store, which also includes a fully equipped workshop.

And with recording and live sound a growth area of the music industry, amplifiers are another key product for Begg’s Music, Grant says.

“We also hope to have live music on the premises from time to time.”

Begg’s Music is very much a family concern, with Grant’s wife Cynthia responsible for the accounts and administration, and their three children, aged 12 to 19, and Grant’s parents all involved. Cynthia’s property management business also has its office in the new location.

Begg’s Music Outlet Store is located at 53 Brisbane Street, on the corner of Brisbane and Wordsworth streets, with plenty of off-street parking.

The South City store will close on October 18 and the new outlet store will open on October 31, and will operate from Tuesday to Saturday.

Comedian up for Billy T Award

BRIDGET RUTHERFORD Growing up, David Correos would do anything to make the older kids laugh.

He is no different now after being named one of five nominees who will go head to head for next year’s Billy T Award.

The 22-year-old grew up in Woolston before moving to Auckland late last year.

The Billy T Award, named after the late Billy T James, recognises and supports young up-andcoming comedians, and runs every year.

Previous winners include Ewen Gilmour, Dai Henwood, Paul Ego and Ben Hurley to name a few.

Mr Correos said he vividly remembered getting the call to tell him he was a nominee.

He was listening to Ed Sheeran to calm his nerves when it came.

“It was a very good moment.”

In spite of moving to Auckland in November, he has not quite adjusted to big city life.

“I’m not a fully fledged JAFA yet,” he said.

“There’s a lot more hills in Auckland, I’ve got a constant burn in my calves. My diet is more suited for a flat road lifestyle.”

The annual Guy Fawkes fireworks display at the New Brighton Pier will go back to the future this year.

The city council event, held on November 5, will be themed Back to the Future, inspired by the movie.

City council event production team manager Chloe Dear said 2015 is the year the movie’s lead character, Marty McFly, set out for in his DeLorean in the 1989 movie Back to the Future II. “We can’t promise the DeLorean will show up on the day,” she said.

“But the fireworks will be awesome set to that movie theme.”

Entertainment will start at 6pm and food trucks will be available to feed the hungry crowd.

The fireworks will start at 9.10pm.

While there are rubbish bins available at the pier, the city council hopes people will take their rubbish home and help clean up by picking up rubbish that other people have left behind.

FUNNY-MAN: David Correos is up for the 2016 Billy T Award.

He will do anything to make people laugh, which has included chugging two litres of milk in less than two minutes, and various YouTube videos which include costume tutorials, trivial rantings and life advice.

He is the only South Islander to be nominated for the award, coming up against Alice Brine, James Malcolm, Laura Daniel and

Matt Stellingwerf.

They will be judged on their performances at New Zealand Comedy Festival next year.

The winner will be announced on May 15.

But for now it would be business as usual for Mr Correos, visiting the local bakery, hosting quiz nights and doing his squats on Wednesdays.

“We really want to protect our beautiful beach environment and make sure no rubbish is left to float out to sea where it can be harmful to marine life,” Ms Dear said.

“We do have contractors who pick up rubbish after the event but it is dark and if it is a bit windy, some rubbish could blow into the water. It only takes a little bit of effort and if everyone does their bit, we can keep the beach clean,” she said.

In previous years, people have brought their own fireworks and let them off at the event.

Ms Dear said this can be dangerous and adds to the litter.

“Please keep your own fireworks at home. It’s just not fun if someone is setting off fireworks in or near the crowd and we want to keep people safe.”

If the weather is unsuitable, the event will be postponed until the following day. Postponement information will be available on the city council’s website.

Time to address coastal

Eastern Vision’s Evan Smith talks about the controversial issue of natural hazards in coastal zones

IT’S TIME for some rational debate about natural hazards.

The strong backlash from the publication of Stage 3 of the Proposed Christchurch Replacement District Plan covering coastal and inundation hazards is the result of a number of failings – not least the prevalence of common sense.

Residents finding themselves in the new hazard management areas were understandably very concerned about their property values. Some were preparing to mount a legal challenge, some were confronting the science or denying sea level rise would happen at all.

In the meantime, the Government has agreed to the city council withdrawing the coastal hazard provisions from the replacement plan. This allows for a more lengthy debate and consultation process in the context of a new, yet-to-be-defined, national policy framework. But at what cost?

The issues still have to be addressed – and they are a priority

PROCESS: Addressing coastal hazards is a priority. if we are to attract much needed investment into the east.

To date, emotion, self-interest, misinterpretation, inaccuracy and denial have prevailed.

There is a desperate need to review the failings and the facts and attempt to navigate a rational pathway forward.

One major failing of the recovery has been the tweaking of the MBIE guidelines for repairs

– cynics would say in collusion with the insurance industry. This has resulted in many homes with major earthquake repairs being allowed to be undertaken on land that has subsided up to a metre in places, without any raising of the floor levels to meet the new floor level and fill management area requirements.

Liability for meeting the new standards has passed to the home-

owners who can ill afford it, even though the risk has been greatly exacerbated by the quakes. This is scandalous and is why Hugo Kristinsson has agitated so vociferously for this to be addressed for some time.

Flood Management Areas are not new, yet communication and recognition of inundation hazard and what it means for individual property owners has

been very poor.

Eastern Vision described it as the “elephant in the room” as far back as 2013 when we addressed John Key and Bill English in New Brighton.

City council processes have failed here too. Bound by process and legal recovery expediency requirements, engagement with affected communities has been too little, too late, incomplete and lacking in empathy.

Especially when the communities most affected are still reeling from the direct impacts of the earthquakes.

Defining the risk without any means of exploring the implications, options and potential solutions with communities was always going to end in tears.

It is largely as a result of this that the Government has allowed the withdrawal of the coastal hazard provisions from the replacement district plan.

Central government must also shoulder some of the responsibility here though. The lack of a clear comprehensive national policy framework for responding to coastal hazards and sea level rise has left local authorities without any clear consistent guidance.

However there has also been a failing of community leadership with regard to this issue. Inciting very stressed residents to challenge the declaration of hazard risk is easy, but not helpful.

Time to address coastal hazard issues • From p15 There are ways to design homes that sit lightly on the land and can survive natural hazard risks.

Inevitably and eventually however some residential neighbourhoods may not be sustainable in the face of sea level rise and other hazards. It is not likely to be confronted for some time, but retreat from some land may need to be seriously considered at some point in a planned way.

The challenge for everyone is how this can be achieved while minimising financial loss for home owners. Christchurch is not alone in this; it is something that all coastal towns and cities will have to confront at some point in the future.

However, even these properties will retain an inherent market value in the interim to those who choose to live in such areas as a lifestyle rather than investment choice, to those who wish to rent, to those seeking affordable transitional housing and to those willing to accept the hazard risks.

Some claim that the declaration of high hazard management areas will sound the death knell for the heart of New Brighton – but consider this scenario.

A developer purchases an old retail property in Seaview Rd between Union and Hardy Sts and wants to build a mix of residential and holiday accommodation 3-4 storeys high consistent with the

new mixed-use zoning.

How can they do this when the land is in a high hazard management area? By addressing the hazard in the design, for example by turning the ground floor into car parking – the so-called sacrificial ground floor.

The land still has inherent commercial value provided any new development is designed to mitigate the identified risks – it’s about building back smarter.

As someone who was red zoned and then bought a replacement home which is now designated in a floor level and fill management area, I believe that common sense must prevail here, otherwise we’ll be on a hiding to nothing.

If we continue to put our heads in the sand, all we will achieve in the next decent storm surge is a salt water enema.

GRASSROOTS SPORT

Life savers’ strong finish Sumner Surf Life Saving Club put forward a strong performance at the New Zealand Pool Championships.

The team of 12 hauled in one gold, four silvers and three bronze medals.

The team managed to come 12th out of 33 clubs competing at West Wave in Auckland on October 2-4.

Brittany Tucker took out the under-19 Women Manikin Carry and came 3rd in the under-19 Women 100m Rescue Medley.

She was also part of the Open Women Manikin Carry relay which came 2nd.

Courtney Quinn, Cassie Wright and Naomi Darvill were also part of the relay.

The same group came 2nd in the Open Obstacle Relay.

Courtney and Naomi also picked up a silver in the Open Women Line Throw, while Courtney came third in the under-16 Women Manikin Carry.

Ben Duffy, Seb Johnson, Cam Jeffery and Harrison Tucker came 2nd in the under-19 Obstacle Relay and 3rd in the under-19 Men Medley Relay.

In the lead up to nationals, the team competed in Dunedin at the Southern Region Championships coming 2nd, and won the Tasman Pool Event held in Greymouth.

WELL DONE: Brittany Tucker, Courtney Quinn, Cassie Wright, Naomi Darvill accepting their silver medals for the Open Women Manikin Carry Relay.

Club captain Henry Lawson said the team was happy with the results considering some of the Auckland clubs had four times the number of participants.

Every member is a qualified

lifeguard and will be on the beach come summer for patrols, with most of them continuing their training for the National Beach Champs held at Ohope Beach in March.

Surfing success for Canterbury team Aaron's Surf Report

The Seventhwave Canterbury Scholastic Surf Team had a successful campaign at the National Scholastic Surf Championships in Gisborne over the holidays.

The team of 12 surfers placed fifth out of 12 teams from throughout New Zealand.

Seb Johnson (St Bede’s College) received silver in the longboarding event, with some smooth and stylish traditional longboard surfing.

The team also gained six semifinal placings. Liam Wright (Shirley Boys’ High School) , Tegan Bishop (Rangiora), Jack Wilson (St Bede’s) placed fifth in their respective divisions and Henry Hawke (Christchurch Boys’ High School), Moss Thompson (Rudolf Steiner) and Zac Van Eekelen (Shirley Boys’) all placing seventh.

The contest scored amazing waves and weather just one week after the dramatic floods that hit the Gisborne region. The surf-

ers trained all through the depths of winter thanks to the support of coaches Nick Black and Alan Temoananui.

The team was grateful for the generous support of the Southern Trust, NZ Community Trust, The Mainland Foundation and Seventhwave wet suits.

Sniffing the smells after Bay Harbour reporter Fraser Walker-Pearce has never known the sensation of smell until now, thanks to the marvels of modern science I GET the sense that people think it’s their God given right to be able to take a big sniff of fresh air, hold it, and release. But for me, it was never like that.

You see, before last month I’ve never been able to properly smell, due to some fairly serious allergies, poor sinuses and airway issues.

But thanks to a short procedure, I can now enjoy the wondrous smells of a butter chicken curry, popcorn chicken, and Caramello chocolate. Everything is in balance though, with the unpleasant odours of my gym gear, brussels sprouts and wet dogs.

I started my schooling life at Mount Pleasant School, where the teacher would regularly bring in wonderfully scented candles (or so I was told), which would: “enhance the learning space.”

But I never smelled them. Most of the time I wouldn’t even realise why the kid sitting opposite me would go bright red, and cause the kids around them to either laugh or groan, while covering their

So it was kind of good, but mostly bad.

Kids at my school just assumed that because of my lack of smell, I must have another super-sense.

They would ask me: “So does that mean you have X-ray sight?

Or can you hear conversations through walls?”

Unfortunately, no. I couldn’t

(and am still working on it). But it never stopped me telling them I could.

I graduated from Mount Pleasant and moved into my first year of Cashmere High School, where my parents decided to get me checked out.

So we went to the GP, who poked and prodded, bent and measured until he was quite sure

there was something wrong.

“I think we’ll send you to the specialist,” she said.

Great, I thought. This could actually get fixed.

So we met with “the specialist” a few weeks later, in a very expensive looking office. He called himself an otolaryngologist.

Which I now know is an overly complicated way of saying he was

an ear, nose and throat surgeon.

He was nice enough, and mum and dad were certainly pleased that dad’s company covered my health insurance, and therefore the $350 consultation fee.

However, the surgeon said that he could only perform a procedure that would slow down the cause of my sinus headaches and hay fever, until I had stopped growing – and then he could give me a sense of smell.

So we went ahead with that procedure in 2011, and it was successful.

Over the next four years, familiar signs and symptoms slowly crept back into my everyday life, as we expected. The turbinates in my nose were cauterized during the 2011 procedure, in an attempt to slow down the amount of infections I was getting.

But over time, the fleshy part of my nose that was cauterized, regrew and became just as susceptible to infection, headaches and hay fever; and was regularly giving me sinus-related headaches.

At one point in 2014, during my last year of high school, I was getting painful headaches almost every day in particular parts of my head. They ran from the front of my forehead, down past my eyes, and connected up in the middle of my nose.

If you’d put a heat sensor over me, I would’ve looked like I was wearing snow goggles.

life-changing operation I was sick of it, my parents were sick of my whining, and they were also sick of sending me to the doctor every few weeks for yet another round of antibiotics that would sometimes work.

So we met with the “nice enough otolaryngologist”, in his expensive looking office again in July, 2015.

He said he was pleased with the outcome of the 2011 surgery, and was confident that if he put a long thin camera inside my nose, he would be able to tell me if he thought I was ready for the crucial smell-giving surgery.

Reluctantly, I agreed.

What he had omitted from telling me was that it would feel like he would be scratching my brain with the camera. Oh, and the local anaesthetic he had just given me, would only last for a minute or so.

While he was abusing my nose, the “nice” surgeon was joking to my mum, “Hmm, haven’t seen that before,” amongst other notfunny lines. Meanwhile, I felt like vomiting.

The surgeon said: “Fraser, you’ve got a deviated septum.”

I was taken aback, I mean, I know I’m not perfect, but I never thought I was deviated.

Once I’d learned what a septum was, and then what a deviated septum was, I calmed down a little bit and listened to what he had to say.

He said the outcome of the abuse would be another $350

consultation bill for dad’s work, a feeling of maybe I could actually put up with not smelling forever if I was going to have a camera to the nose every time, and a $4000 operation at Forte Health hospital, also covered by dad’s work.

When we met with the surgeon next, he took me through the procedure he was planning for me.

He told me it was called septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery, and meant he would have to break my nose, in order to realign my septum. He would then trim back the turbinates inside my nose, so that the airways could become more open, to allow air and anything else up there.

I was put under general anaesthetic for the 45min operation, and awoke in the recovery room after a further 45min or so.

I was so drugged up from the anaesthetic and God knows what else, that when I woke to the nurse asking if I was okay, I sat up and replied, “I’m going great. Actually, fantastic. How are you going?”

Not my proudest moment. I was sent home after an overnight stay at the hospital to recover in bed for two weeks.

After about 10 days of a drip catcher attached to the end of my nose, I woke for the first time after the operation in no pain.

I got out of bed and stood outside. My nose filled with the most crisp, cool and refreshing breath of air I will ever take.

To anybody watching, I must’ve

looked like I’d escaped from an asylum. But, honestly that first breath of fresh air was just amazing.

You may not think air has a distinct smell, but take it from me, it definitely does.

The surgery was successful.

I was able to breathe and smell through my nose for the first time in my life.

When my family got home that day, they were over the moon, and brought me dozens of things to smell for the first time.

The things I loved were vanilla essence and caramel. Smells I didn’t like were lemons and cinnamon.

Now, almost a month later, my favourite smell is Centennial Park, next to Pioneer Stadium, when spring’s first grass clippings were still fresh on the ground.

I’ve also been teaching myself to breathe through my nose without panicking, so I can look more normal, instead of having my mouth hang open to breathe around people.

A lesson I had to learn the hard way was driving home to Redcliffs last week. I usually drive with the window down, as it has never mattered what smell came into the car.

But I can proudly say now that I am no longer the only one driving over the causeway with my window down, because I’ve smelled the estuary at low tide, and it’s just terrible.

AND THE GOOD: Although, the good often make up for the bad smells.

FOOD ½ cup breadcrumbs 3 tbsp oil

Baked courgettes Ingredients 5 courgettes 6 sundried tomatoes 2 bacon rashers 1 cup tasty cheese

and chop bacon roughly.

Mix tomatoes, bacon, grated cheese and fresh breadcrumbs together. Spoon into courgettes.

Drizzle over oil. Bake at 220 deg C for 10-15 minutes or until cooked and golden.

Directions Wash courgettes and cut in half lengthways. Scoop out seeds.

Directions Preheat the oven to 180C. In a hot frying pan, seal the piece of rump steak.

Put it in the oven for 8-12min (depending on how you prefer it done).

Remove from the oven and leave to rest.

Leave to cool in a sieve, so that some of the juices can drain.

Preheat the grill to the hottest setting. Beat the cream until soft peaks form.

Add the egg yolks, mustard and ½ tsp salt. Fold the mushrooms through the cream mix and spoon onto the top of the steak.

Put this under the hot grill for about 3-4min. Serve with the potatoes, shallots and rocket.

Holden Astra brings back memories IF, LIKE me, you have a few years behind you, the name Astra probably brings back a few memories.

It’s long been a nameplate from the General Motors Europe and Holden Australia stables.

Generally it’s been a small-to-midsize hatchback, sedan and wagon, and has been marketed in New Zealand off and on over the years under Opel and Holden badges.

Well, Astra is back. As part of a programme to supply a comprehensive range of models when the Australian manufacturing facilities close down in 2017, Holden is looking long-term at sourcing some European cars for the New Zealand market.

Initially, the new Astra lands in three-door hatchback form, although other variants are a certainty in the near future.

The Astra hatch is available here in three variants – GTC, GTC Sport, and VXR – the test car was the entry-level GTC at $39,990, while the high performance 2-litre turbocharged model is priced at $49,990, it will be the subject of an evaluation in this column later this year.

The GTC Sport adds big wheels, leather trim, sports body kit, and a few other items of specification.

That package adds $3000 to the price which, to me, represents good value.

gets a turbocharged engine, but its displacement is 1.6-litre, and not to be confused with the fabulous 1598cc unit that is fitted to Holden’s Korean-sourced product, notably Cruze and Trax turbo.

Nevertheless, the Astra’s unit is just as tempting, it is amazingly smooth, delivers its power at usable parts of the rev band, and supplies good performance without gobbling fuel.

In terms of figures, the Astra’s power plant is a little confusing given there are different power outputs for manual and automatic transmission. The automatic Astra GTC and GTC Sport get 125kW and 260Nm, while the manual variants get 147kW and 280Nm. For interest’s sake, the VXR gets 206kW and 400Nm. These are all healthy figures and indicate that the Astra is a genuine hot hatchback.

The GTC evaluation car was fitted with the automatic gearbox option. That wasn’t a detraction, although I’m hoping to drive the manual at some point, and

HOLDEN ASTRA GTC: Economical yet feisty turbocharged engine. because the range is new to New Zealand there is plenty of time for that to happen.

The GTC auto also gets a healthy 7.5-litre per 100km (38mpg) combined cycle fuel usage claim. That correlates well with the 9l/100km (31mpg) figure showing on the trip computer during my testing time. It will also record an instantaneous 7l/100km (40mpg) figure travelling at 100km/h in sixth gear (engine speed 2000rpm).

The Astra GTC is also an accomplished handler. It isn’t overly firmed underneath, but because the roofline is low (1.48m) there isn’t a lot of gravitational move-

ment over the suspension, so the body stays flat and controlled in a corner. And at under 1500kg there isn’t a lot of weight transfer in the first instance.

Riding on 235/50 x 18in Continental tyres, there is a lot of rubber on the road, consequently grip is high, there is a strong turn-in through the steering, and feedback to the steering wheel is constantly involving.

For its money the Astra GTC lands with a good level of specification, and it has kit we have become used to in Cruze, Commodore and other Holden products here. Notably MyLink is fitted and it is the platform for

communication, information and entertainment services. It also has satellite navigation and cruise control with speed limiter.

For safety, all Astras have the kit which earn it a five-star safety rating Styling-wise the Astra in hatchback form looks sporty, its big wheels and flowing lines combine to make an appealing shape. That’s no surprise, General Motors’ European product has always been dynamic, and if this is something that we can look forward to from 2017 onwards, then I’m really looking forward to further product arriving here.

In the interim I’m excited to about my impending drive in the VRX. As a car it competes firmly with the quick cars that ply the serious hot hatch market.

But if your budget can’t stretch that far, the GTC in both Sport and non-Sport variations is a worthy substitute.

These cover all wars right through from the New Zealand Land Wars and the Boer War, to the First and Second World Wars and the later Korea and Vietnam conflicts. New Zealand Servicemen and Women first served overseas in the Boer War in South Africa around 1900 and the Military Medals awarded for this service are needed by the buyers, as are any other Medals from early New Zealand and the New Zealand Wars.

In existence since the 11th century, it’s only since the 1970s that it has exploded into its current incarnation as a city of non-stop growth and ambition.

Few things typify Dubai as succinctly as the awe-inducing Burj Khalifa skyscraper.

The word “skyscraper” could have been coined specifically for this building that stabs at the sky, dwarfing other towers around it.

They fail to reach as much as half the height of the Burj, which is an astonishing 829.8m. Even the second tallest building in the world, Saudi Arabia’s Abraj Al Bait in Mecca, is only 601m high.

The new One World Trade Centre in New York, No 3 in the height stakes, rises to 541m.

As giant buildings go, the Burj Khalifa is stylish and beautiful, which is a good thing as it can be seen from 95km away. From inside Dubai, the Burj resembles a jagged stalagmite emerging from the earth. Standing beside it looking up gives a strange feeling of reverse vertigo.

Home automation

Smart homes: Secure, efficient As homes are getting smarter, it’s becoming possible to control your whole home from your smartphone or computer.

But what technology is worth investing in, and which are just fads? Gabrielle Stuart reports YOU’RE HEADING home after a long day. As you pull in the driveway, the garage door swings open, the lights flick on and the alarm turns off.

The house is already warm, as the blinds closed and the heat pump flicked on a hour before you arrived. Your dinner is bubbling in the crock pot.

Having a smart house may sound pretty strange.

As technology advances incredibly fast, you can programme your house, through your home wifi and a network of sensors and plug ins, to do anything from switching on sprinklers when the weather is hot to dimming your lights in the evening.

The technology can make your life a lot easier and your home more energy efficient and secure.

It can also go badly wrong.

bathroom, play music and automatically flush.

The price tag was enough to put most people off – some cost more than $3000.

But Satis brand toilets also had a vulnerability which meant they could be hacked, and left constantly flushing or opening and closing the lid.

Although plenty of pranksters took advantage of the vulnerability, there were no really serious consequences.

But that could be different if there were similar problems in something like a security system, or your wider network.

And no matter how convenient it sounds, an automated system will just waste time and money if it’s unreliable.

And when technology is still relatively new, finding a perfect system can be difficult.

But it would also be a mistake to write it off completely.

Assist Automation started in Christchurch five years ago,

and managing director David Rycroft said smart technology was becoming a lot more popular.

Individual systems could be very different, but most people were motivated by either convenience, security or efficiency, he said.

His customers included people who were building high-priced, architecturally designed homes, and wanted all the mod-cons.

He had installed systems which could automatically turn on lights, close blinds, switch on heating or fires and control security alarms or cameras.

The owner could also use their smartphone to control music or lighting while they were sitting outside, or play something anywhere in their house through a connected entertainment system.

Others wanted efficiency – like McDonalds in Merivale and Riccarton, which both use the systems to automatically dim or brighten lighting during the day or night.

“You’ll sometimes drive past an office complex at night and see four storeys of lights blazing with just one person in there. We can stop that,” Mr Rycroft said.

The other common use is security.

You can connect your security system and any security cameras to your mobile phone.

If your alarm goes off at work, it’ll notify you and you can easily check it to see if it’s your pet setting of the alarm or if something else is going on.

You can also disable the alarm or unlock the house remotely, if someone needs to stop by and doesn’t have a key or the alarm code.

Mr Rycroft said he had installed systems for people with holiday homes in Tekapo or Hanmer, who wanted to be able to keep an eye on the place while in Christchurch.

They could also use the systems to turn on heating or hot water remotely, so the house was warmed up before they arrived.

CONTROL: A good automated system should save time and make your home more secure, efficient and easy to manage, but an unreliable one could cause more problems than it solves.

“We generally spend a lot of time up front with the client trying to understand what they want from a home automation system and what their budget and priorities are,” he said.
