Cuthberts Green is set to become a multi-million dollar sports hub.

The Celebration Sports Trust’s plans for Porritt Park have been shelved and Cuthberts Green is the new location for their proposed outdoor sports centre.

The trust also has plans for an indoor sports centre in the area as well and will announce more details at tonight’s BurwoodPegasus Community Board meeting.

The Pegasus Post understands the plans for that facility include indoor courts, a gym and will be located in the area around Cuthberts Green.

Linfield Sports Club which includes softball, netball, squash and rugby clubs, Coastal Spirit Football Club and Canterbury Softball will all be involved in the development.

Mr Watkinson said the plans from Porritt Park have been modified to fit Cuthberts Green but will still include natural turf fields, artificial playing surfaces, an all-weather running track and will be flood-lit.

Mr Watkinson said he would hope to have the project started within a year.

The Avon River - Illustrated Talk With Hugh Thorpe Tomorrow at 1pm Hugh Thorpe is a civil engineer with a career-long interest in water engineering and science and is a community representative on the Christchurch-West Melton Zone Water Management Committee. The illustrated talk will be held at the WEA Hall, 59 Gloucester St. It will describe the history, ecology, hydrology and cultural background of the Avon River. The bus trip is on September 29, 10am-3pm and costs $35. It will follow the Avon River from near the top to the Avon-Heathcote Estuary, stopping along the way to consider the history, river environment and its management.

Time permitting there will be a side trip to the Travis Wetland.

Behind closed doors meeting over pier fishing KYLE KNOWLES

Solving the issue of fishing on the pier will move one step closer today.

The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board is meeting with city council staff behind closed doors to discuss a possible fix to the issues.

City council staff are expected to outline the options that are available to the community board which includes banning fishing entirely, a partial ban or enforcing existing rules.

Community board member Tim Sintes (above) said whatever the final decision is it has to be enforced.

“The only rules that I’m interested in are ones that can be enforced. From now on if we make any rules I’m only interested in how we enforce them.”

Mr Sintes said whatever decision is made someone is going to be upset.

“I think we’ll have more of an idea today on where we are going and it is going to be a very interesting meeting.”

The Southshore Residents’ Association has asked the community board to consider a complete ban on fishing on the pier which has won support.

All community board members told the Pegasus Post last week it would have to be considered either as a permanent solution or at least a temporary one until a

permanent one was found.

A fishing deck has also been proposed as one of the possible solutions to the problems.

Fishers rules on the pier include no overhead casting, having only one rod per person and not fishing in a specified area at the end of the pier.

Photos of fishers with more than one rod and fishing in the prohibited areas have been posted to Facebook throughout the year prompting calls for a ban. > Readers’ views, p4

NEW BOAT RAMP The Pleasant Point Yacht Club has opened its new boat ramp at South New Brighton Park ahead of the summer sailing season.

The first day of sailing was blown out so the first day of use for the new ramp was expected to be on Saturday, weather permitting.

The club is scheduled to update the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board on progress at the club including plans for a new clubhouse next to the ramp.

PARKING RESTRICTIONS The city council has proposed to install no stopping restrictions on Araucana Way, Burwood. The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board will decide tonight (September 21) whether to approve yellow line, no parking restrictions be put in place on both sides of Araucana Way between Cameo Grove and Serama Place.

CAR CRASHES Four people had to be taken to hospital with moderate injuries from the eastern suburbs on Wednesday last week. Three people were taken to hospital after a two-car crash on Smith St, Linwood. Three other people were treated for injuries at the scene. In another crash a man in his 20s hit a power pole on Cowes St, Avondale, which was knocked out of the ground.

your local Views Sergeant Dave Robertson – New Brighton Police An increasing trend for police is complaints in relation to social media – and it’s a topical subject given ever-increasing range of sites available and in use.

Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Ask.FM, LinkedIn . . . the list goes on and on, while some members of the community might advance rhetoric that they neither desire nor need social media, it’s certainly here to stay.

A friend recently described how he berated his teenage son for wandering in later than expected one night – saying: “Would it be so difficult to update your Twitter status if you’re going to stay out so late?”

The Government recently introduced legislation around ‘cyber bullying’ – with the Harmful Digital Communications Act 2013 coming into force on July 3.

The act introduces a new criminal offence of “causing harm by posting digital communication” and broadens the scope of the existing offence in section 179 of the Crimes Act of aiding and abetting suicide.

SOAP BOX The legislation is aimed to address the most serious offending, and it lists a number of factors which should be considered in determining whether the post would cause ‘harm’.

What the legislation is not aimed at is basic verbal abuse or arguments communicated over social media – and there is an expectation that users will display some level of maturity and respect in their interactions.

As a general rule Christchurch police will not investigate incidents involving minor threats or abuse over social media sites. To do so would result in an unmanageable workload.

Instead – users of social media sites are encouraged to take action themselves to ensure the safety and appropriateness of contacts.

I guess the key theme for social media usage is act responsibly and treat others with respect, or don’t use it at all.

I just came back from Scarborough beach in Brisbane, and what a difference there to the shambles in Brighton, I’ve lived in Marine Parade for 43 years, so I know what I’m talking about. If we don’t have the shops or the pools, that we have been promised for the last 40 years, they might just as well shut up Brighton and put the lights out.

Tom Higgs: Please tell me how can some community board ban fishing from somewhere they don’t own? My family owns $10,000 of the pier through our donation. If they ban fishing, we would want our money back, as it’s not being used the way we were led to believe it was going to used by every one, not just by people walking to look.

The pier was advertised as a level two pier, one upper level and one lower level. The people of Christchurch were asked to donate money. Families and individuals would then be buying a piece of concrete, steel rail or cobblestone and then their names would be placed onto or around the pier.

At the first attempt to close the pier and ban fishing, a meeting was held at the New Brighton Working Men’s Club. I attended that meeting with many other people opposed this ban. I asked the city council spokesperson at that meeting what happened to the second lower landing that would be for fishing and where did all the donated money for this section go? We were told that the city council at that time took out that money and used it for a building in the city centre, that is why the pier is built the

way it is now.

Linda Harbord: As someone who uses the No 44 bus, I would suggest that as well as extending the route, buses are run more frequently, and later.

It’s quite a good route, but it runs half hourly during peak times and hourly off peak, and the last bus from the exchange is around 7.30 pm.

Centre wants public input What water toys and leisure attractions would you like to see in the new Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre?

That is what the city council is asking the community after launching its Your Play Your Say campaign last week.

It runs until October 30.

Residents will have the opportunity to have their say about how the $6.5 million given to the city council by the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust for water attractions at the new facility will be spent.

Residents can share their ideas for the new facility online at www.yourvoice. ccc.govt.nz.

Drop-in sessions will also be held at the New Brighton, Parklands, Shirley and Aranui libraries.

The campaign was launched at Rawhiti School with pupils coming up with their own ideas for the centre.

Wainoni School, Queenspark Primary School, Parkview Primary School, New Brighton Catholic Primary School, Banks Avenue Primary School and Aranui Primary School have also already submitted their ideas.

Some ideas put forward included lazy rivers, special hydroslides, water cannons and different lighting.

Many of these ideas will be posted online.

The most popular ideas will be presented to architects from Warren and Mahoney, who are currently working on the concept design for the new facility.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel said this is a unique chance for residents to ensure this is an exciting facility that can be enjoyed by residents of all ages.

“We’re committed to ensuring this facility meets the needs of local residents as it will be a key recreation centre for the eastern side of the city.

We’re very grateful to the Christchurch Earthquake Appeal Trust for its generous donation which will mean we can include a number of features in the new facility that focus purely on recreation and leisure,” Ms Dalziel said.

“We’ve already had input from residents about other aspects of the facility but this is a chance for people to tell us what they and their families think will make it a fun and vibrant place to visit.”

Construction of the Eastern Recreation and Sport Centre is scheduled to begin in August 2016 and it is expected the facility will open in 2018.

As well as the $6.5 million set aside for water attractions, the city council has approved $30.5 million for the construction of the new facility.

FREEDOM CAMPING Consultation on the proposed freedom camping bylaw closes today (September 21) at 5pm. The bylaw would prohibit freedom camping at areas of high recreation, commercial or residential activity, and high amenity value where access needs to be protected. These areas include parts of the central city, Lyttelton main business area, Akaroa main business area, and locations at Wainui Beach, French Farm and New Brighton North Ramp car park.

TREES UPDATE The Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority has sent a letter to the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board outlining its protocols for the removal of trees in the residential red zone. Residents living on the fringes of the red zone were worried socially significant trees were being cut down without any consultation and took their concerns to the community board last month.

Chairman’s close connection Linwood North School’s board of trustees chairman Roger Munro has been in the job for five years this month. Kyle Knowles spoke to him about his time with the school, being in the army and skiing in Austria You had a bit of a crazy start to your time as chairman?

I took over as board chair two days before the September 2010 earthquake which was a real eyeopener. I rung the principal just after it and said where do we go now? And she said no, where do you go now? (laughs). I also had a stint as the caretaker at the school.

How’d you get the caretaker job?

We took care of our two grandsons and when they started school I was offered the job as backup caretaker. Then that didn’t work out and the fulltime caretaker left and I just took over. I spent five years as the caretaker which I enjoyed.

At times it was a bit trying but we’ve now got good facilities down there.

You were in the army before that?

Yes, I spent 30 years there after I joined in 1956, that will

give you some idea how old I am. I trained as an electronic technician and in my last five years I finally managed to get to Burnham as I didn’t want to go back to Waiouru.

Were you always at Waiouru?

I almost alternated between Waiouru and other North Island bases. And when I got to Auckland, one day the colonel came out and asked if anyone wanted to head to Burnham, so I put my hand up and I got down here and didn’t want to leave. I had four teenage daughters by then and I wasn’t taking them back to Waiouru.

Are you from Christchurch?

No, I’m from Kaitangata, Otago, and I went to South Otago High School. From there I joined the army.

What did you do after the army?

I worked for the AA in their

signs department and I had a wee takeaway business with my wife as well as just another couple of fill-in jobs. Then I was at a stage where I started looking for a caretaker job and it just fell in to my lap at Linwood North.

What takeaway shop?

It was the Hasty Tasty in Byron St, Sydenham. We just sold food mainly, it was very much an industrial area and we built it up from a fairly small business but it got too much and we ended up working 12 hours a day. I think my wife had had enough by then so we tossed that in and when I became the caretaker it gave me a lot more stability.

You have a close connection to the school then?

Yes, my grandsons both went through Linwood North and then I later found out one of my brothers actually went to the school too, I couldn’t believe it.

How long have you been married?

Fifty years to Janice.

Where did

you meet?

In Trentham (Wellington), when I first came out of the cadets I went to the Trentham base

workshop and spent five years.

How did you meet?

I won’t tell you that you might print it (laughs). We were at the swimming pool. I went to tip one of my mates upside down into the pool but he had run off and I tipped her into the pool and she wasn’t at all impressed.

You come from a big family?

Yes, I have eight sisters and two brothers.

I wouldn’t have thought so.

They had their work cut out but when I look back now we had a lot of fun as a big family. We spent a lot of time inventing games and made our own fun.

We didn’t have all the modern toys kids have got today. We spent a lot more time doing things together. We lived in Dunedin and we climbed all over the hills and it was great fun.

Have you done much travelling?

Before I finished as a technician in the army I trained on the

new computers the army was about to use. Two of us went to Marconi in London. We were trained on how to repair them and bought them back to set up.

Did you get to see much of Europe when you were over there?

Yeah, we were lucky to have a period where we had two weeks where we just did whatever we wanted to do so we went skiing in Austria.

What an experience.

Yeah, but it was seven days flying time from Auckland in a Hercules to London. I was sick of

the sight of it by the time we got there. It took us two days to fly across America. All we seemed to do was eat, we’d get one meal brought out to us then by the time we’d finished that one another one was on the way out. We were in the bucket seats on the side of the plane too which were uncomfortable. We did get to go to Disneyland though.

Do you go on many trips these days?

We don’t move around a lot.

We’re quite happy to go somewhere like Akaroa.

Are you into sport?

I coach lawn bowls, in fact I coach the senior Canterbury women. When I got out of the army I had just made the combined services team but after playing I thought I would put something back into bowls. I’ve probably spent 22 years being involved in coaching. In my team last year I had some good players. Over half the team were New Zealand reps.

How much longer you going to continue coaching?

I’m doing it again this year then I’ll look at what I do for the future. I have given it up once but the next year I was back again.

New Brighton Scout Group We are based at Rawhiti Domain, and has about 40 youth members. The group aims to provide fun and practical-based activities for children aged five to 15.

“Adventure is the key at Scouting”, says group leader Dave Pearson.

“We aim to positively influence the lives and skills of our youth, challenge them to try new things and learn new skills, all the while having fun.”

Two Aranui High School’s most promising community leaders have been selected to be youth MPs. Bethany Walters will represent Poto Williams’ Christchurch East electorate while AimeeChantelle Gough will represent Rino Tirakatene’s electorate of Te Tai Tonga.

Both Aimee-Chantelle and Bethany will head to Wellington to take part in the youth Parliament which runs from January to July next year.

Ms Williams said Bethany was a fantastic choice.

“I love her commitment to her local community and school and above all supporting young people.

“Going forward she will be a community leader and being the youth MP it will be nice to give her experience that will really help her.”

Aimee-Chantelle is a cancer survivor and Ms Williams said both her and Bethany will do the community and school proud as

the area’s youth MPs. “It’s a testament to these two young women. They’ve been able to achieve this in amongst all of the candidates and all the schools in the area.”

Both MPs picked their youth equivalents separately and it was a coincidence they were both Aranui High students.

Ms Williams said school principal, John Rohs, was very happy both MPs picked students from his school.

Our project Supporting students through health and well-being Rawhiti School pupils have been taking part in a project focusing on how they can support their peers through change.

Rawhiti has a group of six pupils working on the project with Richard Wisnesky from the Canterbury District Health Board.

The group is part of the Health Promoting Schools initiative, which focuses on strengthening school communities, being in healthy settings for living, learning and working.

They presented their project at a forum with 11 other schools last week.

The forum included had guest speakers including Red Cross, All Right, and a dietitian. The groups also spent some time planning and sharing ideas for future projects.

Mr Wisneskey said the project has been a great success with it set to continue.

He said it was a student-driven project too.

Sport stars line up for recognition The next wave of sporting stars to emerge from Shirley Boys’ High School will be recognised at their sportsman of the year dinner on Wednesday.

After the first 15 rugby side’s successful year they have a number of nominations including team of the year.

The senior basketball side is the other nominee in that category.

First 15 captain, Tom Christie, has been nominated for sportsman of the year and also excels at basketball and rowing.

The other nominees for the individual gong are Silas Daley who is a member of the hockey first 11 and a Canterbury hockey representative.

Ben Friel for mountain biking, he has competed at the world mountain biking championships which included a top-ten finish.

The junior team of the year finalists are the under-15 basketball team, the junior futsal A team, the under-15 rugby A team and the junior rowing team.

There are 10 nominees for the junior sportsman of the year.

Stellar season for Shirley BHS rugby League skills recognised

The Linwood Keas has held its prize-giving for 2015 with Canterbury Bulls player Erwin Sauni picking up the player of the year in a Linwood side which lost the league grand final to the Papanui Tigers.

Along with the player of the year award, Sauni won back of the year and players’ player of the year jointly with Alani Kakoi.

It was a big day for the Sauni family as Erwin’s brother, Paul, won forward of the year for the premier side.

Top try-scorer Danny Latu, who scored 19 throughout the season, did not leave emptyhanded either picking up the best impact player award.

Shirley BHS first 15 had a stellar season making the final of the UC Championship for the first time in more than a decade.

Christie was also the captain of the first 15.

The two representative sides were due to play one another in Palmerston North on Saturday.

McAlister’s New Zealand Schools side then heads across the Tasman to play three further games in Brisbane The first on Thursday is against Samoa Schools before they play the Australian Schools and Barbarians Schools sides.

Four other Christchurch players were also selected in the

teams.

William Tucker of St Bede’s College, Christchurch Boys’ High School’s Josh McKay and St Andrew’s College’s Allan Harrison join McAlister in the New Zealand Schools side.

Raymond Nu’u, also of St Andrew’s was named in the Barbarians side.

Benjamin Houghton was the big winner from the premier side taking home player of the year.

He won three awards including the premiers sportsperson of the year, junior coach of the year and the Whaia te iti Kahurangi award for striving for excellence.

The 14 years side was the big team winner with the team of the year trophy being awarded to them for winning their grand final.

This week is International Deaf Awareness Week – a time to raise awareness and appreciate the issues the deaf community face in their day-to-day lives.

Not all first aid certificates

are created equal While first aid courses must achieve prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course.

T

here can be big differences in first aid courses between a range of training providers. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content and nothing else, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting NZQA training requirements are now in the spotlight.

NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below are a summary of what we think you should know.

Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as Essential First Aid, Workplace First Aid or Comprehensive First Aid and many other eye-catching titles. The term workplace can vary from a small office to a large factory where the risks and potential injuries are just as wide.

Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations.

The content of courses can also vary.

Employers should check to see the first aid course

is relevant to their particular industry risks. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take careful look in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered.

It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks.

Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training.

The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be for training based on: • Unit standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551), a minimum of 12 hours’ training and assessment • Unit standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours’ training and assessment • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours’ training and assessment.

First aid training must cover the outcomes of the NZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines.

Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the provider is actually registered with NZQA for this purpose.

NZQA conduct regular External Evaluative Reviews on all training providers. New Zealand Red Cross is proud to hold a double Highly Confident accreditation in both Educational Performance and Capability in Self-Assessment.

This means that NZ Red Cross is a Category One training provider.

First aid refresher training Refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. This is a requirement and not something for the provider to decide. The requirement allows for a three-month period of grace, so the cut off period is two years and three months which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course.

The refresher training should ensure

the certificate holder is current in first aid practice appropriate to their individual workplace requirements.

If a certificate is not renewed for more than three calendar months from the second anniversary date of issue, it will be necessary for the certificate holder to complete full first aid training to maintain currency.

For the purposes of workplace first aid emergency management, employers will need to ensure that their first aid personnel maintain competency at all times.

Return of the Annual Classic Car Show and Concours d’Elegance

T

his year marks the return of the Annual Classic Car Show and Concours d’Elegance after an absence of three years, following the Christchurch earthquakes. Pre-2010, every year without fail and regardless of the theme, spectators were guaranteed the chance to get up close and personal with more than 70 special classic and vintage vehicles as they were shown off in all their waxed and buffed glory, and this year the show will be no different.

Key to the event is the proximity families and individual spectators can get to some of the most unique vehicles in New Zealand, and the fact that the cars’ owners are on hand to answer questions about the pedigree, history and specification of their charges.

As well as individual exhibitors, the Classic Car Show also attracts car clubs from around the South Island as a mainstay of the vintage vehicle calendar.

Most of the participating clubs will be organising their displays around a given theme, with many interesting variations expected.

All of them will feature their club cars as centrepieces before filling their display areas with all sorts of props and memorabilia to catch the eyes of the judges, who will be spending the weekend comparing displays.

The judges themselves are made up of a mixture of club personnel and members of the public, with the winning club receiving a large trophy and other prizes for their showmanship and attention to detail.

Many cars will showcase their special pedigree while others grab attention simply for their uniqueness and rarity, but each and every one of them will be a testament to the dedication and sheer passion of their owners who will have made every effort to display them in pristine condition.

The Classic Car Show organising committee say that each year, the show keeps getting better as New Zealand’s premier indoor event of this type.

There are other classic car shows in New Zealand, but this is the biggest indoor show devoted entirely to classic, vintage and rare cars in the country. It really provides people with the chance to see the very best of the South Island’s classic cars in all their glory.

As usual, the show will feature a great variety of classic cars from across the world, with American, European and British vehicles rubbing shoulders under one roof at Pioneer Stadium.

While seeing an Aladdin’s Cave of classic cars all on display side-by-side is considered a sight to remember by all car enthusiasts, the Canterbury Intermarque Concours d’Elegance, which takes place at every Classic Car Show, is always a particular highlight.

Cars of all years and makes are eligible to participate in the competition which was first organised by the MG Car Club over 30 years ago.

The event rewards enthusiasts who follow a very strict criteria of detailing, cleanliness, condition and originality, with different awards up for grabs in a diverse range of categories.

Of the 80 or so vehicles which attend the show every year, around 25 enter the intense competition to be judged according to their year of manufacture, originality and condition.

Prizes will be awarded at 7pm on Saturday night of the show, and the public is invited to remain for the presentations.

None of this would be possible without the support of sponsors, and the organisers acknowledge the support of local car restoration firm Upper Classics, who will have their own special display at the show.

The show, held indoors at Pioneer Recreation and Sports Centre, Lyttelton Street, Spreydon, is open to the public on Saturday, September 26, from 9am to 7.30pm, and on Sunday, September 27, from 9am to 4pm. Admission $10 for adults and $2 for children.

Big engine power for Toyota Aurion SPECIFICATIONS

Whereas Toyota has just launched a new generation Camry, its stablemate, the bigengined Aurion, which shares much the same ideology, doesn’t take on such a dramatic change.

However, it has had a facelift which will see it through to the end of Australian manufacture in 2017.

And the reality is, there was little in the old Aurion that needed refreshing, it has been a solid performer for Toyota, it’s large car feel and spaciousness has been a lure for those who like six-cylinder engines and aren’t prepared to compromise on performance.

In terms of change, the Aurion gets a new grille and bumper, while Sportivo models have garnish changes to enhance a sporty look such as big black wheels.

Inside, there’s a lot of extra detail, minor fitment features such as upgraded gauges, rear window blind, audio upgrades, Bluetooth streaming and upgraded trim detailing.
