Vandals and squatters are destroying an Opawa heritage building while it sits vacant awaiting earthquake repairs.

The Risingholme homestead has suffered smashed windows, graffiti on the inside walls, paint all over carpet and cupboards upended, say its former occupant.

The Risingholme Community Centre operated out of the Cholmondeley Ave homestead for more than 70 years before the February 2011 earthquakes damaged the building, causing it to close.

The city council has now boarded up the homestead to try to thwart vandals.

Last year, a group of backpackers had been squatting in

the house at the end of last year, and the centre had to call the police, said Mrs Fordyce.

She said a burning candle was found in one of the rooms last year.

She feared the category two historic place would be burnt to the ground, if repair work did not begin soon. “The last thing I want is for the place to go up in flames before we get back in it.�

Ms Fordyce said repairs needed to start soon to prevent the cost rising due to vandalism.

City council community facilities rebuild unit manager Darren Moses said the $1.1m earthquake repairs are expected to begin in January and will take nine months to complete.

The repairs will include wall bracing, chimney strengthening and new structuring above the roof line.

The homestead was built in 1864 by William and Mary Reeves. It had several owners until it was given to the city council in 1942 by John McKenzie.

The community centre was formed the following year.

Mrs Fordyce said she would like to see the building restored to its former glory and wanted more communication from the city council. “We’re a pretty resilient lot, we just need a bit of a hand to get us back up and running again.�

Local intersections among worst for red light runners Five intersections in the southern suburbs have made the top 13 list for the highest number of red light traffic signal runners in the city.

Canterbury Transport Operations Centre data, recorded on Wednesday, showed the worst red light running intersection in the city was Aldwins Rd, Buckleys Rd and Linwood Ave with 572 vehicles detected.

The intersection of Gloucester St and Linwood Ave was second worst with 493, and the Shakespeare Rd, Wordsworth St and Waltham Rd intersection was recorded as the fifth highest with 397.

The Milton and Strickland Sts intersection in Sydenham, also featured with 361, and the Brougham St and Opawa Rd, Opawa, intersection rounded out the top 13 with 276 red light runners.

The intersection of Barrington and Jerrold Sts was named the worst last year, but it managed to escape the top 13 this year.

The Aldwins Rd intersection, however, jumped up one place from last year, taking the top spot this year.

CTOC manager Ryan Cooney said not only was red light running “getting worse” in the city but it was an “epidemic issue”.

On Wednesday 4960 vehicles were recorded in the top 13.

“The locations over the two years have been all over the city showing that it is an epidemic issue,” he said.

“The inference from the data is that red light running is an epidemic culture, people are doing it by choice.”

Southern View visited the Aldwins Rd intersection on Thursday at about 2.20pm and recorded 17 vehicles running the

PATROL VOLUNTEERS Christchurch South Community Watch gained 18 volunteers when it visited Barrington mall last month. Patrol members held information stalls over two days to let people know what the watch does. Patrol treasurer Mike Fenton said they received some good feedback from the public with some issues it could assist with and took down 18 names for future volunteers. “Each of these applicants have to be police checked and we are hoping to have at least 10 new volunteers on patrol in two to three months’ time.”

PICNIC TABLE Plans for a picnic table in Somerfield Park have been given the go-ahead by the city council. The Somerfield Residents Association has been planning to build the picnic table since March to sit next to the playground. Fresh Choice Barrington donated $500 and the Rotary Club of Christchurch South pledged $2500 to the project. Cashmere High School and Southern Institute of Technology students will build the table.

The city council is also putting $250 towards a community celebration planned for when the table is completed and installed.

Going against school rules becoming trend Bridget Rutherford – Southern View reporter I am all for school students standing up for what they believe in. But what is it with students challenging their schools’ authority?

We are hearing more and more about students who are going against the school rules and threatening to take legal action. We’ve seen it across the country.

First there was Lucan Battison who refused to cut his long hair when his Hastings school, St John’s College, asked him to because it went against the “off the collar and out of the eyes” rule. The worst part was that he actually won that case.

Then a little closer to home, there was the student stubble incident at Hornby High School.

The student decided he didn’t want to shave his stubble in spite of the ‘no stubble’ rule he signed up to when he enrolled at the school. He even left the school so he could keep it.

And don’t even get me started

SOAP BOX on the Christ’s College car parking debacle. As if those boys needed to add any more fuel to the ‘private school snob’ fire. I should know the stereotype; I went to a private school.

When did it become normal to challenge the institution that you are a part of? I went to both a private and public area school, and I never would have challenged the rules at either.

The reason for that is simple – those rules were what I signed up to when I was enrolled at the school. There is a difference between standing up for a worthy cause and completely undermining the rules of the institute you are part of.

Simple message; cut your hair, shave your face and get back to school.

Readers respond to calls to ban fishing on the pier.

Gordon Heyward: Yes, ban the lot. There is a bus which goes to Lyttelton and plenty of good fishing spots over there.

Louise MacDonald: Ban the fishers. I just came back from Scarborough beach in Brisbane, and what a difference there to the shambles in Brighton, I’ve lived in Marine Parade for 43 years, so I know what I’m talking about. If we don’t have the shops or the pools, that we have been promised for the last 40 years, they might just as well shut up Brighton and put the lights out.

The pier was advertised as a level two pier, one upper level and one lower level. The people of Christchurch were asked to donate money. Families and individuals would then be buying a piece of concrete, steel rail or cobblestone and then their names would be placed onto or around the pier.

At the first attempt to close

the pier and ban fishing, a meeting was held at the New Brighton Working Men’s Club. I attended that meeting with many other people opposed this ban. I asked the city council spokesperson at that meeting what happened to the second lower landing that would be for fishing and where did all the donated money for this section go? We were told that the city council at that time took out that money and used it for a building in the city centre, that is why the pier is built the way it is now.

Tom Higgs: Please tell me how can some community board ban fishing from somewhere they don’t own? My family owns $10,000 of the pier through our donation. If they ban fishing, we would want our money back, as it’s not being used the way we were led to believe it was going to used by

every one, not just by people walking to look.

Walter Roy: I fully support the fishing ban on the pier.

•The rubble from the demolished historic Sydenham Church on the corner of Brougham and Colombo Sts has sat on site for four years. Is it time for the eyesore to be removed? Or is it commonsense for the Sydenham Heritage Trust to wait for the money to remove it?

•Cyclists say vehicles on Dyers Pass Rd are dicing with their lives by overtaking on blind corners and being impatient. Is it time for authorities to choose one or the other? Is there a solution?

The 16-year-old fell hard on the back of his head when he was trying to perform a trick. The teenager’s friends saw the fall and put him into the recovery position before calling an ambulance. He was discharged from hospital on Monday afternoon.

This is what (above) Coronation Corner on Selwyn St, will look like in the future.

Lee Pee Ltd was granted a resource consent in 2013 to develop the site on the corner of Selywn and Coronation Sts into a retail and office complex to be called Coronation Corner.

It is now going through the building consent process and Valour Properties are looking for tenants to fill the development.

Its plans show there will be about 15 individual spaces in

the complex ranging from 83350 sq m in floor size.

There will be 42 on site shared car parks in the development.

The original Selwyn St shops suffered considerable damage in the 2010 and 2011 earthquakes and about 60 per cent of the

buildings were lost or unusable.

A master plan for the new shops was signed off in July 2012 with the aim of rejuvenating the area.

Coronation Corner is one of three post-earthquake developments on Selwyn St. A new retail building on the eastern side of the street has already gone in with occupational health service Oh Well! and Pies & Coffee cafe both already in there.

Plans for the neighbouring empty property on the eastern side of the road are yet to be determined.

City council urban design and regeneration unit manager Carolyn Ingles said discussions with the land owner on development options for the third smaller site were ongoing.

She said it was for the private developer of each site to determine when it will be completed, and how much it would cost.

Spreydon-Heathcote Community Board chairman Paul McMahon said Selwyn St is a prime location with a lot of foot traffic.

He said the Coronation Corner plans showed it would be a beautiful development.

LIBRARY CLOSURE The Halswell Library, on Halswell Rd, will close next month so its equipment and books can be transferred into the new Te Hapua: Halswell Centre, which is set to open on November 28. The Riccarton-Wigram Community Board is looking for possible uses of the Halswell Rd building, and asking community groups to get in contact with the board if they have any ideas. Providing cricketing opportunities Catherine Ryan has been working to rebuild the junior section of the Southern Districts Cricket Club for the past three years. She spoke to Bridget Rutherford about cricket, shoulder surgery and seeing the kids pick up the sport So your role at the club is building up the junior club, can you tell me about that?

I’m the secretary of the club and I started about five or six years ago. I started working on building the junior section about two seasons ago. We had eight children, and in the 2014/15 season we had about 68 children registered.

Why did the club not have junior teams?

Just with the members there, there was no one to run it.

Why did you decide to get it back up and running?

Well I’ve always enjoyed cricket and it just kind of evolved. I came in and saw there was a need for it. It started with having to get cricket gear for juniors, so we had to do a lot of fundraising. And we had to get qualified for coaching.

The hardest thing was that a lot of children that wanted to play

cricket are already playing for a different club so we have started with a lot of young five and six-year-olds who were new to the sport, so the competition was pretty tough.

Can you tell me a bit about the juniors ‘Have a Go’ sessions?

Well Have a Go has changed so it’s now called the Superstar Academy and it is for beginners every Friday at Beckenham Park. Technically it is meant to be for five to eight-year-olds but all the kids can come down from all ages. We have skill stations so they learn to catch, throw and bat. Then at the end we have games and it’s a bit more laid back. And we’ve also got the bar so the parents can come and sit at the bar and have beer and watch. They love it.

And it’s quite unique because it is free isn’t it?

Yes it is. It’s good because if

the kids are not sure if they want to play they can come along and there is no pressure for parents to have to pay fees and the child not want to play anymore.

And that must be helpful for families who might not have spare money to pay for cricket.

Definitely, so when I was doing school classes often the kids would say they couldn’t afford to play. It’s really sad how many children are aware of their

parents’ finances. So we wanted to do the free classes for some of these kids to be able to play cricket.

Did you play cricket yourself?

I did, I played for 15 years until I had shoulder surgery, and that’s when I took up coaching.

Ouch, what did you do to your shoulder?

I tore the ligaments and tendons from playing cricket. I

could play again but my shoulder isn’t very strong and now that I’ve got kids I don’t really have time.

Who did you play for?

I played for Canterbury Country, I used to live out in Lincoln and went to Lincoln High School so I played for them right up until under-17. I also played for Lancaster Park Woolston Cricket Club premier women’s team. I was a spin bowler, I didn’t really bat much.

IN ACTION: Catherine Ryan took up coaching after she injured her shoulder badly while playing cricket.

What is the most rewarding thing about coaching?

I like watching the kids get it, if that makes sense. I love being able to start from them not being able to catch a ball, to a few months later when they are bowling.

What is a funny experience from coaching?

Probably coaching my own daughter, she is only five. I was out coaching and she said ‘hey mum look at this’ and all the

other kids started calling me mum as well, and then realised they said it. It’s pretty funny.

Do you just have the one daughter?

I’ve got two daughters. My little one is two and a half, and as much as she would love to be out playing cricket she just watches. Her name is Caydee and my older daughter is called Marlee.

Any funny habits they have?

Marlee is quite funny because

she’s got a lot of allergies and she tells everyone about them.

So if someone goes up to her and asks how she is, she will say “I’m okay but I’m allergic to dogs”. They are very talkative and chat to all the adult playing members.

Do the girls spend a lot of time at the club?

Well my partner is our groundsman so we do spend a lot of time at the club. They have been at the club since being born.

So did you and your partner meet at the club?

Yes, he was in the senior team when I came. We’ve been together for about three years.

So sounds like you are very busy, what do you do with your spare time?

I’m also at university doing a sport coaching degree so a lot of what I’m doing is either studying or coaching. Before coaching and studying I was an electronic engineer. I also run Southern Districts Football Club in the winter. I’m the secretary and administrator, much the same as I do for cricket. Other than that it is family time like going to church on Sunday’s and visiting grandparents.

Spreydon Tennis Club Spreydon Tennis Club is a friendly social tennis club off Domain Tce in Spreydon.

It offers tennis all year round. Club social tennis is on Tuesday mornings at 9.30 and Saturday afternoons at 1.30 onwards. There are an A and a B teams, in the interclub competition which are played on Mondays and Wednesdays.

QUAKE AWARD A Woolston worker, who was given a Christchurch Earthquake Award for heroism, has been named the Institute of Directors Canterbury branch’s 1000th member. Liam Clarke-Hutchinson, 30, is chief operations officer for AdScale Laboratories, a development house for a leading European online advertising marketplace and went to the IoD to upskill his financial knowledge. He helped an injured woman in the aftermath of the February 2011 earthquake and arranged medical treatment for her, earning him the earthquake award in 2012.

Through her studies, she scored a job with consultancy firm Opus, as a project manager. Her new role includes managing jobs for the Christchurch Catholic Diocese. Principal’s efforts for pupils earns community hero award RECOGNITION: Waltham Primary School principal Gordon Caddie has been recognised as The Warehouse’s Canterbury 2015 community hero for the work he does.

Gordon Caddie is the principal of one of the lowest decile schools in the city, but he doesn’t want the children to carry that label.

Since the earthquakes Waltham Primary School has doubled in size, drawing from low decile areas.

Mr Caddie has worked hard to make sure the pupils have everything they need to succeed, including school uniforms.

Now, he has been recognised for his work.

He was presented with The Warehouse’s Canterbury 2015 Community Hero award at the school assembly on Friday.

He was one of nine regional recipients of the award throughout the country, which is an annual acknowledgement

by the company of outstanding contributions to the community.

He did not know he would be receiving it, and five representatives from the South City branch went and surprised him in front of the whole school.

Since the earthquakes, Mr Caddie has set up a very active parent group at the school which has started hot lunches, holiday activities and education classes.

Because a number of parents cannot afford to send their

children on school trips, he organises fundraisers so children do not miss out.

He also set up a programme to train parents to help them support their children and their learning needs.

He was presented with a $500 gift card for The Warehouse, for the school.

Recipients are selected from community groups that are part of The Warehouse’s Bags for Good programme, which aims at cutting back plastic

bag waste.

The programme involves proceeds from sales of 10 cent plastic bags sold at checkouts, being donated to community organisations in each store’s neighbourhood.

The Warehouse Canterbury regional manager Derek Cotton said it was one of the toughest decisions to make each year.

“Gordon stood out and, on behalf of our community, may I extend our thanks for all their efforts.”

Jazz critics wooed by school band Christchurch South Intermediate School jazz band has experienced what it is like to play for a trio of jazz critics.

The pupils played at the Christchurch Polytechnic Institute of Technology Junior Jazz Jam, held on Thursday.

CPIT National Academy of Singing and Dramatic Art head of department Tom Rainey, musician Harry Harrison and CPIT programme leader and saxophonist Gwyn Reynolds judged all the schools who participated and

gave them feedback on their performance.

The band played Loosen Up, All of Me and The Blues is Loose.

Others at the jam sessions included Cashmere Primary School, Medbury School and Chisnallwood Intermediate School.

The students who participated were invited to Labour Weekend workshops with guests Rodger Fox and Roger Manins and could perform at the Big Band Festival next month.

Laid-back day for Marian girls The fast pace of the school year has inspired Marian College students to have a day to take it easy.

Marian’s sister school, St Joseph’s Catholic College in East Gosford, New South Wales, gave money to the school, to help out in the

aftermath of the February 2011 earthquake.

Marian students were allowed to choose how to use the money, and came up with a ‘stress-free day’.

It was held on September 11 and there were fun activities including oversized games of

Twister, fort building and a zoo of animals to pet.

Year 13 student Kasia Stanicich said the student executive talked to the girls about the idea and everyone was really excited.

“The reaction from the girls when the animals arrived was awesome,” she said.

Thorrington twins top up City Mission foodbank

Two Thorrington School pupils have collected more than 730 cans for the City Mission foodbank as part of a school leadership programme.

Identical twins Jack and Archie MacDonald, 10, encouraged families from the school to contribute to the week-long appeal, putting City Mission bags in each classroom for donations.

The pair collected the items at the end of the week, creating a giant heart and cross, which is the City Mission logo, in the school hall.

“We had hoped to get around 500 cans so getting over the 700-mark was really quite something,” Jack said.

“It took most of the morning to gather it all up.”

“We are actually too young to be official volunteers for the foodbank – but we are going to take the items into the team in the sorting area.”

Generations connect

Banjo a hit with young readers Kip McGrath Barrington got a new furry and friendly member to help children learn to read.

Banjo, the mini maltese and chihuahua cross, has been helping out with the centre’s Love to Read classes and has been a hit with the children.

His mission is to charm and entertain the sometimes reluctant readers, and encourage them to take part.

The children were even allowed to choose the fourmonth-old puppy’s name, with each getting to submit their favourites.

Sandi Probert, who set up the Love to Read programme, chose Banjo out of the submitted options.

Age Concern Canterbury chief executive Simon Templeton said social isolation was a huge issue for older people.

He said more visits were planned.

“It’s something that fits in well with what we do,” he said.

Reaching out for scholarship A Cashmere High School student is off to the United States in the hopes of gaining a basketball scholarship.

Connor McLaughlin, 15, is one of 40 South Island students selected to take part in this year’s Mainland Eagles Tour.

The Mainland Eagles Tour was set up by the Canterbury Regional Basketball Foundation to help basketballers pursue their dream of getting a scholarship to a college in the US. The tour, which runs from December 5-24, will start in Texas and finish in Las Vegas.

Connor will take part in a comprehensive training programme while on tour.

He will play eight games against US high schools and five games at the Tarkanian Classic, which is a school-age tournament named after US coaching legend Jerry Tarkanian.

There will be a further two games against two special teams put together for the tour.

Hillview Christian School, St Martins, competed at the Rippa Rugby World Cup in Wellington last week. The team made it to the quarter finals where they played Roscommon School, of Counties Manakau, who eventually took out the tournament.

Hillview came eighth overall. Two hundred year 6 boys and girls from 20 schools across the country took part in the fifth annual tournament after qualifying from regional tournaments earlier in the year. Roscommon battled it out against Richmond in the final on Wednesday eventually winning 35-20.

CRICKETER TO BRISBANE Christchurch South Intermediate pupil Kees Beck will travel to Brisbane to compete for New Zealand at the Indoor Cricket Junior World Series this week.

Cashmere Primary School and Christchurch South Intermediate picked up gold medals in the Koru Games last week.

They were among 38 schools to compete at the games which were held by the Selwyn Sports Trust and played across Lincoln, Prebbleton and Rolleston.

Awareness Week, a good time to reflect on

This week is International Deaf Awareness Week – a time to raise awareness and appreciate the issues the deaf community face in their day-to-day lives.

T

he National Foundation for the Deaf (NFD) advises this year’s theme is “captioning for all”.

(Did you know that the All Blacks games at the Rugby World Cup are not being captioned?)

It is also a good time to reflect on our own

hearing. Hearing is a treasure – it is a vital part of how we communicate with others (an essential part of life). You may not be aware that your hearing has deteriorated. In fact, hearing loss can occur at any age, with one in 10 New Zealanders being affected by it, making communication with others

more difficult.

Any of these three situations could indicate hearing loss: 1. It’s hard to follow conversations when two or more people are talking; 2. People seem to mumble these days; 3. The volume of the TV is louder than others prefer.

Carolyn Till of Gordon & Till Audiology points out that it’s often family members who first notice someone is having difficulty hearing clearly.

“They notice their loved ones are not participating in family activities as they used to, and they also find they often have to repeat things.”

She and fellow audiologist Carolyn Gordon advise that it is important for anyone with hearing issues to take steps as soon as possible to address the situation.

Not all first aid certificates

are created equal While first aid courses must achieve prescribed New Zealand Qualification Authority (NZQA) standards to be certified, not all training providers deliver the same course.

here can be big differences in first aid courses between a range of training providers. Some courses range from teaching only the basic NZQA specified content and nothing else, to providing detailed and comprehensive content designed to familiarise participants to a wide range of likely emergencies. Providers offering shortened courses or courses not meeting NZQA training requirements are now in the spotlight.

NZQA and the Department of Labour have published a factsheet to outline requirements for providers, learners and employers for first aid training based on currently registered NZQA unit standards. Below are a summary of what we think you should know.

Course differences Training providers can market their courses under a wide range of names such as Essential First Aid, Workplace First Aid or Comprehensive First Aid and many other eye-catching titles. The term workplace can vary from a small office to a large factory where the risks and potential injuries are just as wide.

Employers should be cautious in thinking that a one-day workplace first aid course will meet their needs in industries such as construction, engineering, forestry and industrial. More advanced learning is important to meet the proper workplace assessments and meet health and safety obligations.

The content of courses can also vary.

Employers should check to see the first aid course

is relevant to their particular industry risks. If there are risks of falling, or medium to high injury, then take careful look in the shortened courses as these subjects may not be covered.

It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure that employees attend courses appropriate to their industry risks.

Unit standard-based first aid training These are the minimum requirements for both the initial and refresher training.

The minimum duration of first aid training and assessment will be for training based on: • Unit standards 6400, 6401 (or 26552) and 6402 (or 26551), a minimum of 12 hours’ training and assessment • Unit standards 6401 (or 26551) and 6402 (or 26552), a minimum of eight hours’ training and assessment • For refresher training, where the learner’s certificate is no older than two years and three months from date of issue, a minimum of six hours’ training and assessment.

First aid training must cover the outcomes of the NZQA first aid unit standards being assessed and any additional modules identified by the employer through the workplace risk assessment process as outlined in Department of Labour guidelines.

Only first aid training providers accredited by NZQA can award the credits and issue a first aid certificate. Care needs to be taken to ensure that the provider is actually registered with NZQA for this purpose.

NZQA conduct regular External Evaluative Reviews on all training providers. New Zealand Red Cross is proud to hold a double Highly Confident accreditation in both Educational Performance and Capability in Self-Assessment.

This means that NZ Red Cross is a Category One training provider.

First aid refresher training Refresher training is required every two years to maintain the certificates. This is a requirement and not something for the provider to decide. The requirement allows for a three-month period of grace, so the cut off period is two years and three months which should allow sufficient time to enrol onto a suitable course.

The refresher training should ensure

the certificate holder is current in first aid practice appropriate to their individual workplace requirements.

If a certificate is not renewed for more than three calendar months from the second anniversary date of issue, it will be necessary for the certificate holder to complete full first aid training to maintain currency.

For the purposes of workplace first aid emergency management, employers will need to ensure that their first aid personnel maintain competency at all times.

Return of the Annual Classic Car Show and Concours d’Elegance

T

his year marks the return of the Annual Classic Car Show and Concours d’Elegance after an absence of three years, following the Christchurch earthquakes. Pre-2010, every year without fail and regardless of the theme, spectators were guaranteed the chance to get up close and personal with more than 70 special classic and vintage vehicles as they were shown off in all their waxed and buffed glory, and this year the show will be no different.

Key to the event is the proximity families and individual spectators can get to some of the most unique vehicles in New Zealand, and the fact that the cars’ owners are on hand to answer questions about the pedigree, history and specification of their charges.

As well as individual exhibitors, the Classic Car Show also attracts car clubs from around the South Island as a mainstay of the vintage vehicle calendar.

Most of the participating clubs will be organising their displays around a given theme, with many interesting variations expected.

All of them will feature their club cars as centrepieces before filling their display areas with all sorts of props and memorabilia to catch the eyes of the judges, who will be spending the weekend comparing displays.

The judges themselves are made up of a mixture of club personnel and members of the public, with the winning club receiving a large trophy and other prizes for their showmanship and attention to detail.

Many cars will showcase their special pedigree while others grab attention simply for their uniqueness and rarity, but each and every one of them will be a testament to the dedication and sheer passion of their owners who will have made every effort to display them in pristine condition.

The Classic Car Show organising committee say that each year, the show keeps getting better as New Zealand’s premier indoor event of this type.

There are other classic car shows in New Zealand, but this is the biggest indoor show devoted entirely to classic, vintage and rare cars in the country. It really provides people with the chance to see the very best of the South Island’s classic cars in all their glory.

As usual, the show will feature a great variety of classic cars from across the world, with American, European and British vehicles rubbing shoulders under one roof at Pioneer Stadium.

While seeing an Aladdin’s Cave of classic cars all on display side-by-side is considered a sight to remember by all car enthusiasts, the Canterbury Intermarque Concours d’Elegance, which takes place at every Classic Car Show, is always a particular highlight.

Cars of all years and makes are eligible to participate in the competition which was first organised by the MG Car Club over 30 years ago.

The event rewards enthusiasts who follow a very strict criteria of detailing, cleanliness, condition and originality, with different awards up for grabs in a diverse range of categories.

Of the 80 or so vehicles which attend the show every year, around 25 enter the intense competition to be judged according to their year of manufacture, originality and condition.

Prizes will be awarded at 7pm on Saturday night of the show, and the public is invited to remain for the presentations.

None of this would be possible without the support of sponsors, and the organisers acknowledge the support of local car restoration firm Upper Classics, who will have their own special display at the show.

The show, held indoors at Pioneer Recreation and Sports Centre, Lyttelton Street, Spreydon, is open to the public on Saturday, September 26, from 9am to 7.30pm, and on Sunday, September 27, from 9am to 4pm. Admission $10 for adults and $2 for children.

Big engine power for Toyota Aurion SPECIFICATIONS

Whereas Toyota has just launched a new generation Camry, its stablemate, the bigengined Aurion, which shares much the same ideology, doesn’t take on such a dramatic change.

However, it has had a facelift which will see it through to the end of Australian manufacture in 2017.

And the reality is, there was little in the old Aurion that needed refreshing, it has been a solid performer for Toyota, it’s large car feel and spaciousness has been a lure for those who like six-cylinder engines and aren’t prepared to compromise on performance.

In terms of change, the Aurion gets a new grille and bumper, while Sportivo models have garnish changes to enhance a sporty look such as big black wheels.

Inside, there’s a lot of extra detail, minor fitment features such as upgraded gauges, rear window blind, audio upgrades, Bluetooth streaming and upgraded trim detailing.

three variations, the entry-level model sits at $50,990, while a Sportivo SX6 and ZR6 are priced at $52,490 and $54,990 respectively. The evaluation car was the mid-range model, and it performs as well as it looks.

Other than those changes I’ve just mentioned, the concept of Aurion hasn’t altered. It shares its 3.5-litre engine with a lot of other Toyota and Lexus product and, what’s more, it is a strong engine with high power outputs – 200kW and 336Nm, it is also managed so that efficiency isn’t overly compromised. But given its capacity and strength, it does like to work hard and freely, it will surge under acceleration providing a quick standstill to 100km/h time of 7.1sec.

Response to throttle request is sharp and instant, the power flows evenly through a six-speed automatic gearbox, the only transmission in the two-variant range.

The gearbox has a manual shift function at the main gearshift lever itself and through steering wheel-mounted paddles, but such is the strength of the engine and the management process which encourages early shifts so that fuel usage isn’t wasted, I mostly let the transmission change according to its own shift patterns.

Toyota claims a 9.3-litre per 100km/h (30mpg) combined cycle average which correlates well with my time with the test car at 10/100km (28mpg).

At open road speed the Aurion cruises quietly, it glides through the air with just a slight hum off the Bridgestone Turanza tyres (225/45 x18in), only on coarse chip seal. It is a happy highway traveller, dispensing the kilometres with ease, and affording the occupants a comfortable, moderately firmed ride.

The spring and damper rates have been well engineered so that the Aurion will absorb uneven surfaces without jolting the cabin proper. The suspension will also keep the platform and body structure even when tackling the inevitable twists and turns.

keyless entry and ignition, and premium audio with iPod/USB connectivity.

For safety there is traction and stability control, complex air bag network, reversing camera, blind spot monitoring and ISOFIX child seat tethers.

Just like the Camry, the Aurion provides a pleasing driving experience and a level of comfort that rivals models with far greater pedigree. Every time I think that we might lose great cars like the Aurion when the Australian manufacturing industry shuts down, I can’t help but feel we are losing something traditionally Australasian.

Although large car sales have dwindled in recent years thanks to the popularity of sport utility vehicles, it’s been cars like the Aurion and other Aussie sedans that have paved the way for our desire of big cars and their big engines.

"This year we have a traditional German food menu designed by our European chefs and includes many typical items like Hogs, Schnitzels, Sauerkraut, Bratwurst, Pretzels,etc and even desserts like apple strudel and black forest cake.
