FLU CONTINUES to rage in Canterbury, in spite of having the highest vaccination rate in the country.

And health officials are warning the numbers may get worse.

In Canterbury, 35 per cent of the population have been immunised against the flu, significantly higher than the 27 per cent average across the country.

But Canterbury had the fourth highest consultation rate for flu-like illnesses in the country last week, Public Ramon Pink Health Surveillance data shows.

The flu has already claimed one life in Christchurch, as 41-year-old mother Correna Healey died this month from flu complications.

More than 160 people were hospitalised with the flu in Christchurch last month, five times the numbers at the same time last year.

A further 29 people were in hospital with the flu in the first week of August.

But Canterbury Medical Officer of Health Ramon Pink said that the flu vaccination was effective, in spite of the high rates of illness. “All of the main strains circulating in the community are covered by this year’s vaccine,â€? he said. • Turn to page 2

Gurney steps up to lead the way

By Kyle Knowles STUDENTS FROM one of Christchurch’s lowest decile schools will be given the chance to compete in one of the country’s most prestigious multi-sport events – for free.

Two Aranui High students will compete in February’s Coast to Coast, an event traditionally the domain of doctors, lawyers and other highly paid professionals.

The Canterbury Youth Development Trust is behind the idea to open doors to an event which would not normally be on the students’ radar.

Nine-times Coast to Coast winner, Steve Gurney, and former world champion adventure racer, Nathan Fa’avae, have been recruited to help prepare the students for the event.

The innovative move will be launched at Aranui High School today.

Trust director Bevan Seal said the trust wants to motivate young people to achieve and this was a great opportunity for that to happen.

“We’ve got a relationship with the Coast to Coast and we thought it would be great idea for students

Mr Seal said the trust would like to offer this to more schools in the future but wanted to offer Aranui the first chance because it was the closest high school to the finish line at New Brighton beach.

There will be four students picked for the race with two to run the race and two to provide support if needed.

The year 11 or 12 students will

be selected from the Aranui Services Academy.

Teacher in charge of the academy, Ra Waaka, said this was something the students would never have got to do otherwise.

“Obviously in Aranui we do not have the flashest of equipment and the cost of getting into the event with the fees alone it was highly unlikely they’d get in and do the race by themselves.”

The 2016 two-day race en-

try fee for two school students is $750.

This will be the first year the Coast to Coast has allowed entries from school students.

Mr Waaka said it was a fantastic opportunity for the students involved.

The final four, then two students, will be selected on their behaviour and attitude throughout the year with a final decision made in November or December.

Slow progress on quake settlement

MORE THAN $91 million in insurance has already been paid to the city council for damaged or demolished buildings – even though a final settlement may still be months away.

The buildings, which include the town hall, Convention Centre and Art Gallery, have an insurance value of more than $624 million.

But the city council is still in dispute with its insurer, Civic Assurance, about how much buildings are worth and whether they can be repaired or should be replaced.

In the meantime, it has had to spend more than $73 million on the buildings.

For some buildings, the amount spent is only a fraction of the insurance value.

But for others it is more than half – like the $35 million spent on the Christchurch Art Galley, which has been valued at almost $70 million.

In a report, which will be presented to the city council Strategy and Finance Committee tomorrow, earthquake claims manager Adrian Seagar said significant progress had been made on the claims.

He said the majority of claims had been lodged by June, but there were still several minor claims to finalise.

“Work continues to progress on providing all supporting information required to finalise these claims,” he said.

By Shelley Robinson ON APRIL 25 St Margaret’s College student Frances Redmond (right) was in a Nepalese craft shop and had just picked out two brightly coloured laptop cases.

As she began to pay for them, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck.

The shop’s proprietor Tara Timilshina frantically ushered Frances and her two St Margaret’s friends out of the shop and into the centre of the road for safety.

It was from that moment a special bond was formed between Ms Timilshina and Frances.

Frances will forever remember the kind faces of Ms Timilshina and her husband as they looked after the three girls from St Margaret’s.

“She was more worried about us, than her own family. She kept asking us if we were okay - that is just how they are. They put themselves before others,” she said.

Frances has a short video of the moment, where the worried face of Ms Timilshina is pictured and her voice is heard soothing the upset girls.

More than 8000 people were killed and about 17800 injured in the 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

plus four teachers were stuck in Nepal as they tried to secure a flight back to Christchurch.

They made it home on May 1.

Safely back in Christchurch, the little craft shop was never far from her mind and she tracked down the craft shop on the internet: Chetana Women Skill Development, Pokhara.

Now, almost four months later, Frances has sold 114 of the laptop cases from Ms Timilshina’s shop to raise money for stationery and food for children in a nearby Nepalese community.

The two orders for crafts that Frances has placed has kept local women in work for a month.

“The women never know how much work they can get so to know we have given them a month of work is great,” said Frances.

St Margaret’s College has raised more than $20,000 outside of the crafts for the Nepalese relief effort.

While the earthquakes were a frightening experience it is the caring nature of the Nepalese people that Frances remember smost.

“They taught us how to put others before yourself. Now is our time to give back,” she said.

Residential red zone now free dump

By Kyle Knowles THE RESIDENTIAL red zone has become the city’s biggest free dumping ground.

Latest statistics from the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority show there have been more than 1500 reports of rubbish in the red zone reported to, or found by CERA staff on Crownowned land.

The 1504 reports span from March 2013 through to this month.

Avondale is the worst-hit suburb with 260 reports of rubbish being dumped.

Bexley is next with 221 and Burwood, 200.

A CERA spokesperson said it was extremely disappointing people continue to dump waste in the red zones.

“Dumping on any site without permission is illegal and if people see anyone dumping rubbish in the red zones, they are encouraged to pass on this information to CERA or Environment Canterbury.

“Where appropriate, those caught dumping illegal waste and rubbish will have action taken against them.”

Rubbish collection is part of a $4 million operation to maintain the red zone annually.

CERA operates 24/7 security patrols in the red zone to try and combat the illegal dumping.

There has also been a number of unusual items found dumped in the red zone.

Freak wave kills ex-Shirley player

THE FRIDAY Night Food Trucks are likely to return to the city this summer – but the event could look different.

About a dozen food trucks gathered each Friday in Cathedral Square last summer, drawing in both tourists and residents from around the city.

The city council has called the trial a success, and is looking at bringing it back.

But people have asked for more seating, rubbish bins, music and entertainment and better lighting there. That could make the event more expensive to run.

The costs have not yet been broken down, but will be before a decision is made to go ahead with the event.

Christian Barbier, who owns the Coq au Van food truck, said he was surprised how popular the

event was with locals.

“I was expecting a lot of tourists, but I was surprised by the amount of local people turning up, especially around Christmas time. If weather held and it was a good day, it was fine.”

The event was expected to draw in a lot of tourists and younger people.

But 80 per cent of customers surveyed came from Christchurch, and the majority were aged between 25 and 44.

Many people brought their families, and visited the trucks regularly.

The event, which ran from October to April, was also popular with vendors.

Some food truck owners dropped out of the trial at the beginning or mid-way through.

But all 16 of those who stayed said they would be willing to join the event again in the future.

The monthly turnover ranged from $1600 to $7200, averaging at about $820 per truck per night – but that depended on the weather and what other events were happening.

“If it’s raining you don’t usually make money, but that is part of the business. Sunny days were great,” Mr Barbier said.

He believed the success of the event, if it ran next summer, would depend on getting enough food variety.

“You need enough food vendors to make the whole event sustain itself. If you don’t have the numbers, it’s just nothing and you won’t get the people in.”

AN ENGLISHMAN who played rugby for Shirley has died while body boarding in France.

Rob Walton, 36, appears to have been hit by a freak wave at Labenne beach near Biarritz, on France’s south-west Basque coast.

A father-of-four, he had taken one of his children’s body boards into the water.

Walton (above), who was nicknamed Yoghurt, appears to have been hit in the spine by a big wave.

Walton played for Canterbury B alongside Richie McCaw and Dan Carter in the early 2000s.

Where Walton drowned is one of the most popular surfing spots in the area.

Vapour spill from chemical

THREE PEOPLE were treated by ambulance staff after inhaling sulphuric acid vapour at Canterbury University on Monday.

Emergency services were called to the science centre about 1.30pm, following reports of a sulphuric acid vapour spill.

The Fire Service managed to “stabilise” the chemical.

An ambulance spokeswoman said six people were checked by ambulance staff at the scene – including three who had inhaled sulphuric acid vapour.

One person was taken to Christchurch Hospital with minor injuries.

Chimneys: Who is smokin’ who?

WATCH OUT if you live in New Brighton and have a smoky chimney – your neighbours are likely dob you into the regional council.

Environment Canterbury’s 24hour Smoky Chimney Line, which is used by neighbours to report houses with chugging chimneys in the vicinity, showed New Brighton had nearly twice amount of people dobbing in their neighbours as other suburbs.

Twenty-three properties with smoky chimneys had been reported to ECan since April in New Brighton. The next highest pollution calls were from Redwood and St Albans, both sitting on 12 properties.

ECan says most air pollution in Christchurch is caused from domestic log burners. ECan has phased out older-style log burners, with only Ultra Low Emission log burners allowed to be installed in most areas.

City-wide, 280 complaints had been received since April, said ECan principal strategy adviser Nadeine Dommisse.

“Seventy-seven of these were first-time complaints and were sent information on how to burn smoke-free; the others required some form of investigation but there has been no need to issue any abatement notices or fines so far,” she said.

A fine of $750 can be issued.

New Brighton Project chairwoman Tracey Keen said it was “a shame” neighbours were telling on each other.

She said it was a high amount of New Brighton people reporting on their neighbours.

She said lower-income families were reliant on log burners with wood a cheaper option, while others were waiting on landlords to upgrade to a clean heating sources.

“Maybe when they call they are not thinking through the circumstances of the people using noncompliant burners,” she said.

“It would be better if they went and talked to their neighbour about it. Maybe then they can try and help,” she said.

She said more than 600 people had been helped this winter with how to use log burners more efficiently, including financial assistant in some cases.

“Since we started our winter assistance programmes we have helped more than 600 people, this includes financial support in some cases.”

ECan has been tasked by the Government of reducing the amount of high pollution days to three by next year, and one by 2020.

As of Monday, Christchurch had already notched up seven high pollution nights, more than twice the amount allowed by next year.

Failure to meet standards could

lead to a ministerial investigation of council performance and, in extreme cases, commissioners appointed.

Commissioners are already at the helm of ECan due to water quality issues.

This winter, ECan introduced the “no visible smoke” rule monitored by a team of smoke spotters. They are tasked with finding offending chimneys that smoke for longer than 15min.

If a chimney is spotted, staff leave information in letter boxes on how to burn smoke-free, but can issue $750 fine for recidivist offenders.

No abatement notices or fines had yet been issued, said Ms Dommisse.

Houses open for homeless

A CITY council-funded homeless project has seen one house open for young people and another for families.

The city council agreed to spend $130,000 from its housing fund to underwrite the leasing of about 20 private rental properties for the homeless.

The move, spearheaded by Deputy Mayor Vicki Buck, came after reports youths as young as 14 were squatting in derelict innercity buildings, left abandoned by the earthquakes.

Cr Buck said at the time she wanted homeless youth off the street this winter.

The Christchurch Methodist Mission, which leads the project, has opened the first house for young people. Up to five can stay in the house at a time.

Social and youth workers provide support on-site.

Executive director Jill Hawkey said one house had also been rented for families.

She said the location of the houses are kept confidential for the safety of the people in them.

It comes at a time when the Government opened its first teenflatting house for eight young people in Christchurch, operated by Presbyterian Support Upper South Island last month.

Six houses for homeless people are expected to open for the city council project.

Crashes continue at Bus Interchange

By Kyle Knowles BUS DRIVERS are continuing to crash at the new $53 million central city Bus Interchange.

Latest figures show there have been seven crashes since June 10 adding to 13 earlier crashes at the interchange.

Environment Canterbury public transport manager, David Stenhouse, said the seven crashes have happened from over 58,000 bus movements at the interchange.

“The majority of the incidents were minor with buses nudging bollards.”

He said there were three slightly more significant crashes.

“One where two buses came into contact and another two where buses have come into contact with the side of the bay and damaged windows.”

Mr Stenhouse said no one was injured in any of the incidents and they did not affect overall service performance.

The first 13 cases at the interchange in May and June included two bus-to-bus crashes, while the other 11 were buses hitting bollards, the side of bus bays and fences.

Mr Stenhouse told The Star this week the additional measures put in place in early June have been effective in assisting drivers with the placement of their buses and in reducing incidents.

There are on average 862 bus movements through the interchange each day.

A Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority spokeswoman said stage two of the interchange, which runs along Colombo St, is expected to be opened by August 31.

MORE THAN $9 million has been donated to different causes through the Earthquake Mayoral Relief Fund, with the biggest grants so far going to Aviva, the Linwood Rugby League Football Club and the Earthquake Memorial.

The fund was set up by the city council after the earthquakes to help community groups rebuild.

The majority of the money available for this financial year had already been spent, with almost $1.6 million granted since July.

Big grants include $500,000 to the Linwood Rugby League Football Club to help pay for their building projects, $294,000 to the Earthquake Memorial project and $150,000 to the Mayor’s Welfare Fund.

Grants of $100,000 have gone to the Original Scripts Theatre School Trust, Sumner Surf Life Saving Club and the St John Christchurch Area Committee.

Smaller grants include $54,000 to BUG 4/2 which runs the Imagination Station and Christchurch Brick Show, $38,000 to the Christchurch City Mission and $10,000 toward the Banks Peninsula War Memorial.

There is $724,000 left in the fund, which can be granted to projects over the next year.

The biggest grant so far has been $1 million toward the Earthquake Memorial project, which is funded by the Government.

Ferrymead Bridge traffic signals

Syphilis cases prompt need for safer sex

TRAFFIC SIGNALS on the Ferrymead Bridge are expected to go live at the end of this month.

The Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board has been asked to approve the traffic signals for the approaches of the bridge at its meeting today.

City council staff have made a number of recommendations to the community board: • The newly constructed intersection of formed roadways, which connects Bridle Path and Main Rds with the bridge roadway be controlled by traffic signals with right and left-turning arrows.

• A signalised pedestrian and cycle crossing be installed on Main Rd just east of that intersection.

• The St Andrews Hill and Bridle Path Rds intersection be controlled by a give way sign on St Andrews Hill Rd. • Tidal View, at its intersection with Ferry Rd have a give way control.

The $35m bridge opened to motorists in March, with the signals and intersections the final construction work to take place.

The bridge has taken more than four years to plan and construct with the original bridge significantly damaged in the February 2011 earthquake and later demolished.

SYPHILIS NUMBERS have jumped in Christchurch, sparking a call for more awareness about safe sex.

In the past 18 months, syphilis cases have doubled in the city, the New Zealand Aids Foundation has found.

The jump in syphilis cases was due to gay and bisexual men having unprotected sex, Aids Foundation executive director Shaun Robinson said.

He said gay and bisexual men were “far more at risk” of contracting syphilis and other sexually transmitted infections than heterosexuals.

“Eight-seven per cent of all cases of syphilis in New Zealand are amongst gay and bisexual men,” he said.

“There is an easy way to stop this – use condoms.”

Mr Robinson said syphilis spread quickly and if left untreated, could cause serious problems such as brain damage, nerve damage and blindness.

He said heterosexual people were also vulnerable to the contagious disease.

Mr Robinson said men might not know they contracted the disease as syphilis did not have obvious symptoms.

“It’s really important to get tested and it’s relatively easy to get it treated these days.”

Mr Robinson said GPs can offer full sexual-health check-ups.

Alternatively, he said people could book a free visit to the Christchurch Sexual Heath Centre by phoning 364 0485.

CHANGES TO a busy Cranford and Westminster St intersection to allow better traffic flow will be discussed in a community board meeting tonight.

The Shirley-Papanui Community Board will hear deputations from residents and business owners over the proposed changes to a main arterial route that is used by about 20,000 vehicles a day.

Parking would be lost to accommodate new lanes allowing right and left turning vehicles on Cranford St and Westminster

St (east) to move into separate lanes, reducing the delay experienced by the through moving traffic.

At the intersection Cranford St will be widened to three lanes in both directions, providing a right-turn bay, a straight through lane and a left-turn bay.

Bus stops along Cranford St would be moved further down to make room for more time restricted parking also giving more room for traffic to move through.

Westminster St will also have a two lane system, one for left turning and straight through

Full pedestrian protection is where the turning movements are held with red turning arrows, so that pedestrians can cross the road without coming into conflict with turning movements.

A Parliamentary committee doesn’t think the public would back a blanket ban on the sale of fireworks for private use, and has turned down a petition calling for such a ban to be put in place.

Fraser Walker-Pearce asks if people agree with the Government, or the petitioners.

Frances Dench, student, of Cashmere: “I fully agree. Because there’s nothing wrong with fireworks, they’re fun and they bring communities together and they’ve always been celebrated. I think the age limit should be raised to 18, if it’s not already.”

Lewis Walker, student, of St Martins: “It’d kind of ruin the whole New Brighton Pier big extravaganza that we have, so that would suck. I agree with the Government, the people who want the fireworks. It can’t be that big of an issue, because I’ve never heard of anyone in New Zealand dying from a firework, so yeah, it’s fine the way it is.”

Dwayne McAllister, gap year, of Wainoni: “I see where they’re coming from, when it comes to people like pet owners and all of that, but I believe there’s a better way to be going about it. At then end of the day it makes sense to stop them, but there’s a better way to go about it. Angharad Morgan, of Swansea: “Yeah, probably. It’s because it’s what they’re used to using already; I don’t see why they’d change. I think fireworks are a nice thing, especially around Christmas and Guy Fawkes, I think it should definitely stay.

I think it depends on the individual; maybe they should raise it [age limit] to 21. I think it’d be awesome if they could do a massive display like they do in London or something like that.”

Toothbrushes Consumer Brushing your teeth calls If you brush twice a day, you’ll have cleaned your teeth more than 20,000 times before you reach the age of 30. But could you be doing it wrong? Gabrielle Stuart talks toothbrushes and techniques with the experts DENTAL SURGEON Ruchika Sachdev has looked inside thousands of Cantabrians’ mouths over the past 15 years.

The majority of patients she sees at her surgery, Smilesville Dental, have problems caused by bad brushing technique.

And the problems are not what you might expect.

Skipping flossing or not brushing thoroughly enough or for long enough can cause serious issues.

But she estimated more than 60 per cent of patients she saw had problems from brushing too much or too hard.

“If they are using a brush which is too hard or brushing with a lot of pressure, you will see the enamel wearing away,” she said.

If that was caught in the early stages, changing your technique or using different brushes or toothpastes could help.

But if the enamel had worn right down it was impossible to replace, and you may need a protective coating put on your teeth.

Most people didn’t realise they were doing anything wrong, she said.

“A small set of people are aware of problems with their technique, but about 90 per cent are not aware at all. They will think they are doing a good job and won’t realise there is an issue until they come to the dentist and we tell them about the problem.”

Many people reported having sensitive teeth, and that was often a sign they had damaged the enamel, Dr Sachdev said.

She wanted to see proper brushing technique taught to children in schools, because there was so much misinformation about it.

Flossing was another problem, as more than half of patients she saw said they did not do it regularly.

He said flossing was a particular issue among immigrant communities in Christchurch, as it wasn’t common practice in many parts of the world.

Dental problems caused by stress were also a particular problem in Christchurch, he said.

Dentists had reported an unusual rise in fractured teeth or fillings caused by grinding or tensing teeth in the two years after the earthquakes.

And dentists were still seeing problems caused at the time of the earthquakes which had

become a lot worse, and a lot more expensive to treat, if they were ignored.

Fluoride is another concern in Christchurch, because it is one of the few cities in New Zealand where water is not fluoridated.

But Dr Chiang said most people who were brushing their teeth regularly with a commercial toothpaste would be getting enough fluoride to keep their teeth healthy.

Technique

Understanding what you are trying to achieve when you’re brushing is the key to getting it right.

Plaque starts to form near the gumline, so you should aim the bristles at the gum line at about a 45-degree angle.

Rather than brushing back and forth – which could be hard on the enamel of your teeth – use short, circular motions to sweep away the plaque.

Which toothpaste

Choosing a toothpaste can be difficult, as there are dozens of different types and brands all claiming different benefits.

Whitening toothpastes can make a noticeable difference, but some are abrasive and can cause problems if used for too long, or if your teeth are sensitive.

Tarter control toothpastes usually contain sodium pyrophosphate or sodium hexametaphosphate, which will help to discourage tarter from forming.

Some people avoid toothpastes which contain flouride, but it is included for its cavity-fighting properties, and most dentists recommend it.

“When you ask patients when did your tooth break, they will always give you a date around 2011. They say my teeth were the last thing I had to worry about when they had so many problems with their homes or losing work.”

He said it was difficult to judge the scale of the problem, because the cause of an issue wasn’t always recorded or remembered.

But he is regularly in contact with many dentists working in Canterbury, and said most had reported the same issues.

for a bit of wisdom Desensitising toothpaste can be effective. But often teeth becoming sensitive is a sign of problems, and the toothpaste will only fix the symptoms – so talk to a dentist first before you switch.

You should also be wary of claims a toothpaste can restore enamel on your teeth.

The toothpaste could help if the enamel on your teeth hasn’t decayed yet – but if it is already decaying it’s unlikely to work any miracles.

Finally, there’s the flavour – a growing variety of mint and even herbal flavours are now available, but they just come down to personal preference.

Alternative toothpastes

Alternative toothpastes are becoming more popular, and articles online will recommend everything from strawberries to baking soda to clean and whiten your teeth.

There is truth in some claims.

Strawberries rubbed on your teeth can help to clean the surface, as can apples and banana peel – although they won’t get in crevices or give you a very thorough clean.

But fruit with a lot of sugar or high acid content can also do damage to your teeth.

Using baking soda instead of toothpaste is less pleasant, but growing in popularity.

It works fairly effectively to remove plaque, and could also help to neutralise acids in your mouth.

And it is abrasive, but less so than some whitening toothpastes.

But although some natural alternatives can help to clean the surface, they don’t have the ingredients commercial toothpastes use to protect your teeth during the day against the acids and sugars you eat.

And some can do harm – using vinegar or citrus might appear to whiten your teeth, but will actually be corroding and eating away at the surface.

Manual or electric

You could buy more than 100 budget manual toothbrushes for the cost of some electric ones.

Many cost more than $100, and the price for some rises above $400.

Are they worth it?

If you’re using a good brushing technique and brushing for long enough, a manual toothbrush can in theory work just as well or better than an electric one.

But almost 30 clinical trials involving more than 2500 participants have shown consistently better results using electric toothbrushes.

They showed, on average, an electric brush reduced plaque by seven per cent and gingivitis by 17 per cent, over a manual one.

If you’re a lazy brusher, it is easier to do a better job with an electric toothbrush.

According to the University of Manchester, an average toothbrush can contain more than 100 million bacteria, including E. coli and Staph.

That is not quite as disgusting as it sounds – most people have 100 to 200 different types of bacteria in their mouth at any time, and most of them aren’t harmful.

But the question is where the bacteria is coming from.

Another English study, this one by Leeds University, showed bacteria from a toilet could rise up to 25cm above the seat when it was flushed – and stay in the air for up to 90 minutes.

The scientists recommended you close the toilet lid when flushing, or keep your toothbrush away in a cupboard.

The theory was later tested by MythBusters.

They placed 24 toothbrushes around a bathroom, and two “control brushes” in an office.

They concluded faecal matter may get on your toothbrush – but it was probably on everything else as well.

And being too germ-conscious with your toothbrush could also cause problems.

Keeping your toothbrush in a sealed container could encourage mould – which could cause its own health issues.

If you keep your toothbrush in a medicine cupboard, make sure there is some airflow – the bristles should completely dry out between brushing.

And if you’re really worried about bacteria on your brush, you can give it a soaking in mouthwash to clean it – or you can put most toothbrushes straight in the dishwasher.

Pedal pusher gets bicycles moving

BICYCLES USED for years by posties in Christchurch are about to get a new lease of life in Madagascar.

A group of Christchurch volunteers are trying to collect 400 bicycles to send to the East African island, where they will help health workers reach remote communities.

More than 100 bicycles were donated during a special collection on Saturday.

Most were donated by individuals, but groups like New Zealand Post were also getting involved.

Posties only use their bicycles for five years, and they were usually taken apart as scrap metal after being decommissioned.

Petition to save PostShop gains traction

A PETITION to save the Woolston PostShop has netted nearly 200 signatures.

Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board member Joe Davies was in Woolston on Monday collecting signatures.

He received more than 100 in the first two hours.

Last month New Zealand Post revealed its plan to close the Woolston branch and expand postal and banking services in Ferrymead.

Postal services would run from anoth-

er Woolston business, but those wanting to use Kiwibank services would have to travel to Ferrymead or Eastgate.

Residents and business owners are outraged and say the shop is well used, and a lot of people had no internet banking or limited means of transport.

“It is seriously going to impact their lives and Woolston by the looks of it,” Mr Davies said.

He hopes to present the petition at today’s community board meeting for it to be referred to the city council.

NZ Post is currently looking for a tenant to fill the PostShop building to run the postal services.

Slow way to come home

Couple seek adventure in famous ocean race

By Shelley Robinson IT WILL take 5500 calories a day for former Christchurch resident Katrina Boxall to fuel her body for an arduous sea voyage between London and Brazil.

It is about 8.30pm in Gosport, South Hampshire, England, and Ms Boxall is standing on the 70foot yacht that her team will live on for 11 months during the famous Clipper Round The World Race The birds are having a field day and Ms Boxall batting at them, trying to keep them off the yacht while talking on her cellphone.

She has just finished loading a tonne-and-a-half of food onto the yacht, Team Unicef.

Husband Andy Kerrison, 48, is busy on another yacht doing exactly the same thing.

Each person will consume 5500

calories a day to keep in prime yachting condition with 70 per cent of each meal being carbohydrates, she said.

None of the 22 sailors, including Ms Boxall, on each of the 12 yachts are expert sailors except one – the captain.

That is part of the charm of the Clipper race established in 1996 by Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. He was the first person to sail solo nonstop around the world in 1968-69.

He started the event because he wanted anyone, regardless of sail-

ing experience, to experience the thrill of ocean racing.

Ms Boxall will be onboard Team Unicef for the first leg between London and Rio de Janeiro before returning home to live in Christchurch for the first time since 2007.

Meanwhile, husband Mr Kerrison will remain on the ocean for the entire 40,000 nautical miles stopping at Rio de Janeiro, Cape Town, South Africa; Albany, Sydney, Hobart, Airlie Beach, Australia; Da Nang, Vietnam; Qingdao, China; Seattle, US; Panama, Central America; New York, US; Londonderry/Derry, Northern Ireland; Den Helder, Netherlands; and finally London.

Ms Boxall will be in Christchurch when her husband will travel near where the ill-fated Titanic went down, in the Qingdao to Seattle leg – she is not looking forward to it.

“He will be sailing down massive swells,” she said.

The plan was for only Mr Kerrison to go around the world.

“But then when he was signing up I realised he was going to have this amazing adventure without me,” said Ms Boxall.

So she signed up on the spot.

It will cost the couple about $60,000.

They have packed up their one-bedroom London flat, put

their worldly possessions into 10 Christchurch-bound boxes and quit their jobs as teachers at Northolt High School, Ealing, London.

Last week, Ms Boxall took the wheel of the 32-tonne yacht for the first time.

“When you get on the yacht you think of nothing else, its incredibly special. There are no sounds just the wind and the water, the white horses in front of you. For that moment I couldn’t think of a better place to be,” she said.

Working out at the gym six days a week proved to be time well spent.

“You are fighting your way around and climbing up walls, heaving yourself into your bunk because of how the yacht sails,” she said.

There will be two people travelling in the mind of Ms Boxall as she begins on her journey August 30: Clare Allen and Jon De Vries.

Mr De Vries died of cancer November 10, 2011, with Ms Allen died of motor neuron disease 18 months later.

Both were well-known Kiwi “adventurers” and close friends of Mr Kerrison and Ms Boxall.

“Before their death they passed onto us a love of sailing to us. They wanted to sail around the world and now we are doing it for them,” said Ms Boxall.

Tough cycling event

CYCLING: Christchurch will feature in The Pioneer, the first seven-day mountain bike stage race to be held in New Zealand, as the host of the race’s prologue, which will take riders on a 37km course through the Port Hills.

The race will then continue on through South Canterbury, eventually finishing in Queenstown.

A series of participation races for social riders will be held alongside the prologue.

Judo pair on track for Rio

By Andrew Voerman FOR MANY of the world’s athletes, this month marks the halfway point between two major events – last year’s Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and next year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Christchurch judo couple Jason Koster and Moira de Villiers are two such athletes, but for them, this month also includes a world championship, the biggest event they will take part in between times.

They leave for Kazakhstan, and its capital city of Astana, where the championships will be held, next Tuesday, travelling via Australia, and Abu Dhabi, before competing on Friday (de Villiers) and Saturday (Koster).

Koster says he’s come a long way in the year since Glasgow, where he won a bronze medal.

“I think Glasgow was a great tournament, obviously, for us, and to win a medal for the country, you can’t look past that.

“However, I honestly rate the performances I’ve had since that, in South America, and at the Oceanias, as some of my best, and I also feel that I’m improving weekly now, getting really, really good training in now with all our training partners and I’m coming into my peak, so hopefully, I’ll continue with that.”

De Villiers, who won silver in Glasgow, agrees.

“I think it was just the beginning, like a stepping stone, and made us want it more, and realise that we are close, we just need to work a lot harder.”

Working harder has meant figuring out how to better fit their training in around their work, so they are left with more energy to commit to their chosen sport.

“We’ve got a really, really good flow,” said Koster.

“We were quite messy with our lifestyle (before Glasgow) just with the nature of being an amateur ath-

The draw for the world championships will be made on Monday, with about 60 athletes entered in Koster’s under-100kg competition, and 40 in De Villiers’ under-70kg one.

If the selections for Rio were to be made today, both of them would make it in.

Koster has already met the New Zealand Olympic Committee’s criteria, and needs to be inside the top 22 globally to book his place – he currently sits 15th.

De Villiers needs to be in top 14, and currently sits 18th, but has her hands on a spot anyway, through

the continental qualification process.

Koster said a good performance at the world championships would be useful as they try to improve or maintain those rankings.

“It’s huge, because the points on offer at the worlds are quite enticing. Winning one fight, you basically get as many points as you would placing in a world cup event.

“On the flip-side though, obviously the competition’s a lot higher, so your likelihood of getting a tough fight first up is higher as well, so with that reward for doing well at the worlds also comes the risk of a tough draw.”

The pair’s last major outing was

at the Oceania championships in New Caledonia in April, where they both won gold medals – the only New Zealanders to do so.

Before that, they spent most of March touring South America, competing in three tournaments across three weekends, alongside fellow New Zealander Darcina Manuel, in a trip they funded themselves.

They returned home with three medals each – a silver and two bronzes – and it was a big period of growth for both of them, said Koster.

“It’s rare to actually grow during a tour, but that’s exactly what we did. We basically topped our performances each week. I made the final in the last one, but the people that Moira was beating in those other tournaments were high quality – she was 20sec off beating the ex-world no 7, and I think the experience we got out of that, and the mental toughness, really, of being away from (Koster’s son) for so long, and being able to actually get the results and believe and know that we can beat these full-timers, really told us that we’re doing here is working.”

After the world championships, their next major tournament will be the Oceania Open in Wollongong in November, to be followed by another overseas tour, likely a return trip to South America, which they have planned for the start of next year, before 2016’s Oceania championships, which loom as their last major shakedown before the Olympics.

De Villiers competed at the London games in 2012, finishing 18th, but Koster has only attended the quadrennial event as a coach, in the same year; both are targeting Rio as the final event in their careers, and for now, as they head to Kazakhstan, they’re right on track to make it.
