Eat whitebait from the Avon and Heathcote Rivers at your own peril – it is like eating “sewage.�

Canterbury District Health Board medical officer of health Dr Alistair Humphrey said consuming whitebait caught from the city’s polluted waterways was ill-advised.

The whitebaiting season starts this Saturday and runs until November 30.

Dr Humphrey said whitebait in the city’s rivers is “brown bait� with the potential to cause crippling stomach bugs, like giardia cysts and cryptosporidium. “People catch it, put it in a bucket and freeze it. So it is frozen in its own sewage. Cooking doesn’t make a difference,� he said.

He said thawing whitebait blocks was likely to contaminate kitchens.

The news comes after the release

of a city council report revealed the worst waterways, strangled by contaminants from rebuild, cracked sewers and faeces from dogs and waterfowl.

It is the first comprehensive report since the earthquakes, with 44 sites tested monthly last year.

O’Sheas safe found in backyard Avon,

A safe which was stolen from O’Sheas Public House in May has been found in a backyard.

About $1500 was in the safe when it was taken by two men who used a crowbar to break into the back door of the bar.

It was found by police at a Shirley house, close to O’Sheas.

The cash which was in it was gone and the safe was badly damaged.

One person was arrested at the address after police ob-

tained a search warrant.

Bar owner Alan Stroud said the man arrested was not one of the two which broke into the bar.

Cheques from the safe were found at the address along with the safe itself.

Mr Stroud said police found more cheques at a Beckenham address which lead police to the Shirley property where the safe was found.

The money belonged to O’Sheas social committee which had stored it in the safe

behind the bar.

Mr Stroud put up a $100 bar tab for any information leading to the return of the safe.

The bar tab was never claimed.

Mr Stroud said the men who stole the safe would have known there was money in it, and suspected they had been at the bar previously and saw money going into it.

The intruders did not trip the alarm until they were leaving with the safe in hand.

Bridge opening on Friday The Gayhurst Rd bridge is finally opening on Friday.

The bridge was scheduled to be finished in mid-June but work to resurface the roads either side of the bridge have meant the bridge opening was delayed.

A community gathering is planned for Friday morning, starting at 10am. The public is welcome.

The bridge will be open to vehicles at noon.

QEII asbestos options planned

BY KYLE KNOWLES A recommendation on what to do with the asbestos-laden material sitting at the QE II site is expected to be made next month.

A report is due to be delivered to the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board outlining options to safely, securely and permanently manage the asbestos.

City council recreation and sports unit manager, John Filsell, said this means a solution that will ensure the asbestos will not harm anyone.

“This can range from securely encapsulating the asbestos on site to removing it elsewhere. In both of these examples the way we go about undertaking them has to be in a manner that will not do anyone any harm.”

Parklands Residents Association committee member Paddy Brandon said although it has taken a long time to get to this stage it was a positive it was finally happening.

“I’m quite relaxed about that, the key objective is to get it out of there and fit for public use.

“I think the positive thing is that the issue has been taken seriously. You have to give them (city council) credit they’re coming up with some options to get rid of it.”

“My wish would be to see the end of it by the end of September.”

The community board will make a recommendation to the city council on what option to take.

▌IN ▌ BRIEF Suspects not found

Three suspects in the shoplifting of Woodham Rd Liquor Store last month, are yet to be found. Detective Wayne Boyd is investigating the shoplifting, that saw the suspects locked in the store, against protocol, by manager Amrik Singh. Detective Boyd said: “It’s on the back-burner for now, but it’s still top of the to-do pile; we’ll catch them.”

Library repairs

Repairs to Shirley Library at The Palms are expected to begin on August 24. The work is expected to last until October. The customer service centre and the library itself will not have to close during the repairs with contractors working outside of opening hours.

Cricket registrations

The dates for the New Brighton Cricket Club junior registrations have been announced. They are on September 2 between 5-6.30pm, September 5 10am-noon and September 16 5-6.30pm. They are to be held at the clubrooms at Rawhiti Domain. Registrations can also be made online at www.nbcc.org.nz.

A new mega school and what Construction of Aranui Community Campus starts next month and is expected to be finished for the start of the 2017 school year.

Reporter Kyle Knowles takes a look at the school and what it will offer Aranui is about to become home to one of the most impressive schools in the country.

Four schools are closing and merging to form one super school – the Aranui Community Campus.

Aranui Primary, Avondale Primary and Wainoni schools are all set to close next year with the new co-educational school catering for years 1-13 opening on the Aranui High School site, in Shortland St. It will be the first of its kind in Christchurch with groundworks already under way.

There will be about 900 students merging into the one school in 2017 but has capacity to grow to a roll of 1800.

Latest statistics show Wainoni had a roll of 89 last year, Avondale 303, Aranui 157 and Aranui High 370.

When they have been completed, the old buildings will be demolished and new playing fields will be laid in place of them.

Ministry of Education spokeswoman Katrina Casey said the new school will have a range of new facilities.

“The school will benefit from specialist teaching spaces for science, trades, production and process, food technology and performing arts.”

There will be a gym, a 700-seat multi-purpose cultural space, library, student services and student health area as well as administration and staff facilities.”

The Aranui Community Campus is just a temporary name until a new one is found with a feedback period closing yesterday on a shortlist of names.

Those names are Haeata, Awa, Taikura and the Eastern Community Campus.

The new school will be built using a private-public partnership.

OPPORTUNITY: Sports teams like the Aranui High rugby league side will benefit from the new facilities including a gym at the new campus.

What this means is that a private partner is responsible for designing, building, financing and maintaining the school property for the term of the contract (usually 25 years from the opening of the school).

The $298 million contract has been given to Future Schools Partners to build and maintain four schools across New Zealand including the Aranui Community Campus.

The private partner will work with the ministry as well as the establishment board of trustees to

ensure the vision for the school is maintained.

The ministry pays the private partner once every three months, with this payment reduced if the school facilities do not meet the standards specified in the contract.

This effectively provides a 25year guarantee on the buildings, unlike schools operating under traditional procurement models.

The Government retains own-

ership of the land and buildings throughout the life of the contract.

It is expected that this approach would fundamentally change how education is delivered in this community.

“When the decision was made we weren’t particularly enthusiastic about the proposal but there has been quite a lot of community involvement in terms of discussing the proposal.

“The community is quite excited and supportive of it now and it’s a great opportunity to create a first rate educational institute.”

Mr Davidson said through the principal appointee process they had someone apply from the North Island who was the principal of a year 1-13 school.

“She said there was a really positive environment at the school which reassured me hearing someone who had worked in that environment was positive about it.”

The ministry has been working with the city council and other relevant parties to identify facilities for the campus, such as

a swimming pool, library and specialist youth facilities.

One facility that is not on the master plan for the school, but is a priority, is a whare.

The establishment board has said it is fully committed to having a whare on the school site.

The whare on the current Aranui High School site cannot be moved due to asbestos issues.

A new whare will be a project led from outside the private partnership and may not be ready in time for the opening of the rest of the school in 2017.

Aranui resident and BurwoodPegasus Community Board member, Tim Baker, said the road to the new school has been rocky but the end result will benefit the whole community.

“We have concerns about playgrounds and how many there will be as well as how the different

cultural aspects are going to incorporated into the school.

“The idea of the open plan and the modern learning environment is exciting.”

Mr Baker was also pleased with the year 1-13 model.

“I think that’s a great idea, more interactive activities between older and younger students, it makes sense.”

A satellite of Ferndale Special School will be co-located on the site and will provide special education for secondary age students.

Eastern Community Campus: It signifies a collaboration of education in the east of Christchurch, based around the strong local community.

Andy Kai Fong has been named the principal of the school.

Mr Kai Fong spent four years as principal at Hornby High between 2000 and 2004 and four years as assistant principal at Lincoln High School.

He is currently working as the head of secondary at Hong Kong’s Discovery College, which like Aranui, is a year 1-13 campus.

He says there is a need to leverage the community engagement and successes of the four schools that will be part of the Aranui Community Campus.

$2600 for hungry children

FRIENDLY: The New Brighton Community Garden open day last year during Neighbourhood Week.

Funding applications open for Neighbourhood Week Neighbourhood Week is coming around for another year, and applications for funding are now open.

The annual event will run from October 23 to November 1 and is aimed at bringing people and communities together.

The New Brighton Community Garden participates in Neighbourhood Week and uses it as its big opening day of the year.

Administrator Joyce Bailey said they have been participating in the week for more than five years and it was fantastic to have a little bit of support each year to allow them to have a big open day.

“It’s wonderful, we appreciate it a lot more with the little bit of funding that comes with it.

We are part of the community and the more exposure we get is great.”

They community garden had its 10-year anniversary in April and has more than 150 registered volunteers.

The Wainoni-Avonside Community Services Trust also participates in Neighbourhood Week.

City council community facilities are available for hire for a small fee and groups can also book a park or reserve to hold it.

It can be a small or large gettogether, but is mostly about getting to know people who live close to you.

New Brighton youths have raised more than $2600 for children in Bangladesh.

The money was raised for the World Vision 40hr Famine through a sleepover at Youth Alive Trust.

The famine challenge meant going without food for a day.

Youth Alive Trust co-ordinator Amber Paterson said the young people, who are part of the Rock Solid Club, took fundraising to new heights this year.

60 years of motherhood The Queen is in her 64th year as the reigning monarch, which is about the same amount of time the Linwood/Avonside Plunket Mothers’ Club has been meeting.

They started their group in the 1950s and met two weeks ago to mark about 60 years of motherhood and annual meetings.

While the club has moved on from the Plunket rooms, they still meet at least once a year to reminisce and remember the crazy things they did to raise funds for Plunket including staging a massive mock wedding.

The ages of the group range from their mid-70s to the oldest, Doreen Jones, who is 89.

The women originally met once a month in the Plunket rooms at Woodham Park.

They used to hold sewing days, social gatherings and suppers to raise money for Plunket.

Ex-Brighton surfer witnesses shark attack

BY KYLE KNOWLES A former New Brighton boy was on the beach when a great white shark attacked Australian surfer Mick Fanning.

Veteran surfer Iain ‘Ratso’ Buchanan, was only 50m away, in the judging tower in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa, last month.

Buchanan grew up surfing along the New Brighton coastline and his parents’ home is still in Waimairi beach.

The head priority judge on the World Surf League saw the attack unfold.

“I pretty much just saw what you saw on TV, the tail came up behind him and it was pretty obvious what it was straight away.

Job well done with wetland restoration

Three east Christchurch schools have helped out with a public planting day at Travis Wetland.

Last weekend, the Avon/ Otakaro Cluster Group which included students from Shirley Boys’, Avonside Girls’ high schools, Waitakiri and Cotswold schools took part in the public planting day.

In 90min, about 350 trees and plants were established around Tra-

vis Wetlands and Dudley Creek.

Led by Wellington-based Oliver Vetter of Sustainable Coastlines, the objective was to develop a food source for indigenous wildlife as well as help to purify the wetland water by slowing run-off.

As the trees grow, they will eventually create shade and cool the water so that the existing whitebait spawning grounds are better protected.

Linwood schools could be in line to receive weekly youth development courses in 2016.

The Foundation for Youth Development started up in Hornby, and after huge success, plan to raise enough funds to make the move east to Linwood.

FYD Canterbury regional manager, Noeline Allan was excited that a team would be given the chance to make a difference in Linwood’s “struggling” community.

“We will modify the programme in Hornby, rather than in

Buchanan said the captain of the boat was telling him sharks were intelligent creatures and would investigate something in the water, like a surfer.

He said the sharks would sit just below the surface of the water and if you were sitting on a surfboard in the water you wouldn’t be able to spot them.

Buchanan is a five-time New Zealand surfing champion and an ASP world grandmasters champion.

He fended off the shark with his board as it bit through his leg rope.

He escaped without a scratch.

Buchanan spoke to Fanning later that night about the attack at a party for the surfers, staff and crew.

“He just expressed how bloody lucky he was and how he was just thanking his lucky stars. He seemed to be handling it okay but said he’d be having some nightmares.”

The New Brighton Miniature Rifle Club moved to the Rawhiti Domain golf club building in 1952.

New breastfeeding support group

A new breastfeeding group has started up in New Brighton.

It will take place every Wednesday from 10am-noon at the Grace Vineyard Beach Campus, Seaview Rd. With support from Youth Alive Trust and Rural Canterbury Primary Health Organisation, volunteer mothers who are trained breastfeeding peer supporters will offer help, advice and encouragement to mothers and babies through breastfeeding challenges.

Rural Canterbury PHO lactation consultant Ruth O’Donovan said: “Although there are breastfeeding groups in Aranui, Linwood and Shirley, many mothers do not have their own transport and there-

fore need a group that is within walking distance from their home.

“It is important to note that all mothers are welcome irrespective of how they are feeding their baby.

“We encourage pregnant women to attend so they become familiar with possible breastfeeding challenges and to get a realistic perspective of breastfeeding.

Mothers do not necessarily need a breastfeeding problem to attend the group.

hen the Merrin School students came back to Term 3, they also came back to a new learning environment.

Over the last holiday break several classrooms were altered to remove walls to make our learning environment bigger and better.

Merrin School now has open plan classrooms with the latest shaped tables and bean bags in recognition of the different learning styles that students prefer.

South New Brighton’s Got Talent!

tudents from South New Brighton School, a full primary school going to Year 8, are presently auditioning for their own ‘SNBS’s Got Talent’ competition. This is proving to be very popular, giving many students an opportunity to shine. It is bringing out a wide range of talents and abilities. The categories are: Solo and Group singing, dance, instrumental and ‘entertainment’.

The school has a senior rock band who had the wonderful opportunity to work for two days with Hera, a professional singer/ songwriter. With her, they produced four amazing original songs. SNBS was also lucky enough to have Stan Walker (recording artist, winner of Australian Idol and judge of the The X Factor NZ) visit them after a student

This may actually be true!

Bluegrass Music can be described as an infectious high energy blend of old time country, blues, ragtime, Celtic with a dash of rock n roll.

These guys, with their traditional line-up of banjo, fiddle, mandolin, dobro (guitar), and bass fiddle (upright bass), master it perfectly.

Since forming in 2013, Valley Bluegrass has been in hot demand playing festivals and featured concerts. And in keeping with the spirit of the music, they busk regularly at the Otago Farmer's Market - delighting customers and stall holders with their upbeat tunes and songs.
