Gough muzzled over boozy night

By Gabrielle Stuart JAMIE GOUGH has been gagged over his boozy night at the Cancer Society Ball on Saturday, where he was kicked out.

The high-profile city councillor was told to leave by security at about 10pm, witnesses said.

Yesterday, Cr Gough (right) told The Star he was unable to discuss his behaviour because it was being formally reviewed.

The 29-year-old stepped down from his position as chairman of Vbase, the city council event management company, because of the incident. Vbase hosted the event, where $120,000 was raised for the Cancer Society.

Cr Gough told The Press on Monday that he had been drinking at the event, but he refused to talk about it yesterday.

He said he was an open person, so not speaking about the incident was not his “first or instinctive way to beâ€?. “I discussed it at length with council and Vbase, and all have agreed that we need to put it through a formal and robust process as it has been raised formally, and me commenting just clouds or takes away the integrity that the process needs to have.â€? • Turn to page 3

THAT’S ODD AN ENGLISH animal lover ended up making two trips to France to return a stowaway mouse to its home.

The rodent got in Dr Sue Collard’s car as she drove back from her holiday home in Normandy in April.

Ten days later, she spotted it sniffing some pears and caught it in a homemade trap, but it escaped.

After recapturing it, she drove back to the hamlet of Saint-Gervais-des-Sablons last month but the mouse would not budge.

She then set off for France again earlier this month and finally had success after forking out £280 on ferries and petrol.

The university lecturer of East Sussex said: “It was very emotional to see it finally escape. I’m just glad it is back where it belongs.”

She said: “Most people thought I was crazy.”

Caregiver to face court

A NURSE Maude caregiver is to face the court for allegedly stealing money from an elderly man with dementia who trusted her with his Cashflow card.

The Rolleston woman, in her 40s, was working part-time for Nurse Maude when the thefts are alleged to have taken place between December 2013 and January 2014.

Senior Constable Glen Tweedie said the woman was visiting the man, in his 80s, on a daily basis for one or two hours at a time and was entrusted with his Cashflow card to buy groceries for him.

However, she had breached that trust by allegedly taking $3612 in the form of cash and groceries for herself.

The man lived on a property with his son but in a separate unit. It was the son who had discovered the alleged theft when going through his father’s bank statements, Senior Constable Tweedie said.

Nurse Maude general manger marketing Sue Bramwell said the woman had resigned in February 2014 after the matter came to light.

It was not normal practice for caregivers to have access to a patient’s Cashflow card.

“We have very strict protocol

regarding our support nurses and workers and anybody who goes into anybody’s home,” Ms Bramwell said.

“On accepting her resignation we informed her we would be referring the matter to the police.

“Because she is an ex-employee and has resigned, that’s all we want to say.”

The woman has elected for trial by jury and will appear in the district court on August 3.

Senior Constable Tweedie said although police had responded immediately to the allegations, due to “the slow turning wheels of justice” the matter had only just reached the courts.

Woman pleads not guilty to stealing gate THE WOMAN accused of stealing the Edmonds Factory Garden gate has pleaded not guilty.

Melanie Diana Edmonds, 43, appeared in the Nelson District Court yesterday charged with the theft of the gate on March 12.

Ms Edmonds has elected for a jury trial. A case review is scheduled for August 19 with the trial to be held in Christchurch at a later date.

The gate, which was installed at the garden in Linwood about 20 years ago, has not been recovered. It has an estimated value of $1900.

Fatal black ice crash Office sex romp prompts extra care screening cleared EMERGENCY services are pleading with motorists to take it easy after black ice caused chaos on the region’s roads yesterday.

A woman understood to be in her 30s was killed when she lost control on a slippery road.

The 4WD she was driving slid across Millers Rd, off Christchurch-Akaroa Rd, and crashed into a bus.

The crash happened at about 7.45am with the 4WD ending up in a ditch.

Lincoln Chief Fire Officer Jeremy Greenwood said they helped extricate the bus driver, who was the only person on the bus at the time of the crash.

The injured driver was then given medical attention at the scene before being transported to hospital by the Westpac Rescue Helicopter in a moderate condition.

Two people were killed in another crash yesterday afternoon, when a car collided with a 4WD towing a horse float near West Melton.

It happened shortly before 3pm, at the intersection of Halkett and Calders Rds. More than 20 car crashes were reported to police yesterday morning as ice made driving treacherous. They caused traffic to snarl up on the southern and northern motorways.

A man and a woman attracted worldwide attention after being seen having sex in the Marsh Ltd insurance office one night in January.

Carlton Bar patrons filmed the encounter and the pictures and video were circulated on social media.

In its decision, the BSA said the information “had already been widely disseminated across multiple media outlets” when it was

broadcast on Seven Sharp.

“Therefore [it] did not amount to ‘private facts’ in the context of this broadcast.”

While the couple involved had their faces blurred in the segment, they were identifiable, the BSA said, by their clothing and hair and their workplace being named.

It reminded broadcasters to be cautious when re-broadcasting potentially distressing material.

The call came after Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee told a parliamentary committee the project would have to be reconsidered.

But it is not the first time she has stepped on Mr Brownlee’s toes over projects he is responsible for.

“It’s like any family. There will be people in the family you get on with and sometimes there are people you never get on with, no matter what you do. That’s just politics.”

THE HISTORY February 2012 – Then Labour earthquake recovery spokeswoman, Ms Dalziel questioned Mr Brownlee in Parliament about “backroom deals being done” where the city council was being pressured to raise rates and sell off assets. Mr Brownlee rejected the claim.

March 2012 – Ms Dalziel asked Mr Brownlee in Parliament about red zone residents being left out-of-pocket by Government buyouts. He said she had a “personal concern about how much she was being paid,” and just wanted more money for her own property.

Afterwards, she said she was hurt by the “demeaning” comments.

April 2012 – Ms Dalziel said CERA was planning to take more power over the central city, and Cantabrians did not deserve an “earthquake tsar” who was ignoring best practice and “making it up as he goes.” Mr Brownlee refused to respond to her “crazy rant.” Later in the month, Ms Dalziel called John Key to intervene in the red zone settlement process, saying Mr Brownlee had “totally refused to step in and help.”

May 2012 – Ms Dalziel said she wanted Mr Brownlee’s job as Earthquake Recovery Minister, if Labour won the 2014 election.

December 2012 – Ms Dalziel told Stuff she tried to establish a relationship with Mr Brownlee when she became the Labour earthquake recovery spokeswoman, but she had been “singularly unsuccessful.” She said he was “micro-managing the recovery through CERA and I think that’s wrong.”

January 2013 – Ms Dalziel said she was making a formal complaint to the auditor-general about Government handling of the red zone, but Mr Brownlee said he doubted there was grounds for an investigation.

March 2013 – Ms Dalziel called for Mr Brownlee to resign over “gross

incompetence,” after details of more than 80,000 EQC claims were leaked.

Mr Brownlee said he took “great issue with the comments,” and was not personally responsible for the leak.

June 2013 – After announcing she was running for mayor, Ms Dalziel said fights between Mr Brownlee and herself were history, and they had established a good working relationship.

August 2013 – Mr Brownlee criticised a city council commitment to restore the Christchurch Town Hall, saying it would risk the future of the Performing Arts Precinct.

October 2013 – The two discussed the need for better communication between the Government and the city council at a meeting Ms Dalziel, then mayor, described as “hugely positive.”

November 2013 – Mr Brownlee threatened to seize control of the Land Use Recovery Plan, after the city council failed to pass it on time. He said he had tried to work with the city council, and was disappointed by the time they were taking. But he later put out a joint statement with Ms Dalziel saying both parties were on “the same page.”

February 2014 – Mr Brownlee questioned the city council decision to raise consents charges as well as the way it was announced, saying it should have been done by the mayor. He later criticised Ms Dalziel’s “State of the City” speech, saying she was putting politics into the recovery by saying she would endorse parties which aligned with her views.

June 2015 – Mr Brownlee told a parliamentary committee plans for the Christchurch Convention Centre would need to be reconsidered, because they were made “in an environment that wasn’t anticipating the town hall to be surviving.” In response, Ms Dalziel called for John Key to step in to make sure it would be finished on time.

Varsity hostel plan delayed for one year

By Andrew King A CONTROVERSIAL plan to convert a rest home into university student accommodation has been delayed for a year.

Canterbury University wants to put students into the St Nicolas Care Home in Kirkwood Ave, Ilam, but nearby residents are concerned.

The rest home, owned by Bupa, is shifting to a site in nearby Riccarton.

But due to Bupa’s new premises, the university has postponed its plans.

The university met with Kirkwood Ave residents on Monday to let them know its plan to rebuild the rest home into a 70-bed student hostel had been put on hold.

Riccarton-Wigram Community Board member Helen Broughton said it was great news for the residents.

“It was a well presented meeting by the university. They detailed their plans about the Ilam and Kirkwood sites well.”

Resident Graeme Bennetts was pleased that it had been put on hold so that talks between the university and residents could take place.

“It gives us the chance to have a better conversation with the university.

Cops cleared over killer’s arrest

POLICE “responded appropriately” when they used sponge rounds to apprehend rapist and murderer Aaron McDonald, the Independent Police Conduct Authority has ruled.

McDonald was caught by armed police on the West Coast in March last year while on the run after raping and murdering a woman in Christchurch.

McDonald, a methamphetamine user, was captured after attacking two hitch-hikers.

Police had tried to negotiate with him for several hours to give himself up.

He refused and was deemed a violent risk to himself and others. Police subsequently decided to use apprehension tactics that would deliver the least possible harm including the sponge round.

The sponge round is fired from a 40mm gas launcher and gives police an additional tactical option in dangerous situations such as the capture of McDonald.

It is intended to incapacitate an aggressive, non-compliant person and will commonly cause bruising rather than significant or longlasting injury.

Police announced on Monday the new tactical option will be made available to all Armed Offenders Squad officers.

IPCA chairman Judge Sir David Carruthers said although McDonald did not sustain any serious injuries during the incident, the authority was asked by police to undertake an independent investigation given it was the first time the sponge round had been deployed by officers.

The results of that investigation have been reported to the Commissioner of Police.

The 40mm projectile is designed to spread its energy across 4.5 times the surface area, which allows it to also be used at extremely close range with no greater risk of injury to the subject.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel and Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee have been sparring again over the convention centre and its timeline for being built. Reporter Tom Doudney asked people whether all the arguing is getting a bit tiresome, who is at fault and if the Government is doing enough to keep the ball rolling with the central city anchor projects.

Noel Donoghue, retired, of Shirley: “There are more important things than a convention centre, like housing for one thing. I think the anchor projects are not the priority. They have got to get their priorities right.

Nobody is at fault, I think, it’s just an unfortunate thing which has happened to this beautiful city.”

Christie van der Lem, waitress, of Burnside: “Yes, the arguing is getting a bit tiresome and I think they shouldn’t be worrying about a convention centre right now but I don’t know all the information so I can’t comment on who is at fault. Yes, the Government should be doing more with the anchor projects but I suppose they might run out of money.”

Sheelagh Sumpter, retired, of Burwood: “No, I don’t think the arguing is getting tiresome at all because I think that they have to try and do the right thing and in the end we all benefit from it. I don’t think anybody is at fault and I think we have done very well and I don’t blame anyone for it. I think the Government has done fine.”

Stephen Palmer, cleaner, of Addington: “The arguing is just getting pathetic – they just need to get the job done.

We are sick of this, we are worried about finding somewhere to live and they are arguing like that.

I think Dalziel is at fault – she is the main person in charge and she should be handling it better. I think the Government is doing a good job.”

Pam Warren, semi-retired, of Linwood: “The arguing is getting very tiresome.

Gerry Brownlee is at fault – I just think he wants total control over things. The Government is not doing enough but in terms of needing to do more, it all depends which anchor projects you are talking about.”

Roger Cudmore, environmental engineer, of Waltham: “I know they argue but it doesn’t worry me.

No one is at fault, it’s just that they have different perspectives.

Gerry Brownlee is trying to save taxpayers’ money and Lianne Dalziel is trying to provide something for the city so they both have valid points.

Is the Government doing enough to keep the ball rolling on the

anchor projects? I can’t answer that because I don’t believe some of the anchor projects are that important. Like the large stadium for instance, I would rather see that stalled and some of the other projects go ahead. Things that local people use like libraries, cycleways, infrastructure that affects them.

Things like the convention centre don’t directly benefit the people of Christchurch – they have indirect benefits.

I think it’s better to spend money fast on basic infrastructure that affects people’s lives.”

Hawkins to start restoring town hall in July HAWKINS CONSTRUCTION has been appointed to undertake the $127.5 million town hall restoration, expected to begin in mid-July.

Hawkins was selected following a tender process for the restoration that closed on March 17 and a city council decision on June 11 to fully restore the town hall. It was one of four companies in the running.

Contractors will be preparing the site over the coming weeks.

Council unit manager anchor projects Liam Nolan said Hawkins was chosen because of the experience of its project team.

The team has worked on a number of high-profile and complex heritage restoration and construction projects such as the Auckland Art Gallery redevelopment, completed in 2011, the restoration of the Ilam Homestead completed in 2013 and the Auckland War Memorial Mu-

seum redevelopment completed in 2006.

The town hall is expected to be completed in 2018.

Work will include repairing and strengthening it to 100 per cent of new building standard as well as an upgrade and refurbishment.

This may include reconfiguration of the James Hay Theatre to meet the needs of the performing arts community.

CERA becoming a bureaucratic blister WHAT ON earth is going on in the inner-city? And who is responsible for getting it back on its feet?

Given the ongoing delays of the CBD blueprint, you could be forgiven for thinking CERA is becoming more and more a bureaucratic blister medicated to its eyeballs on benzodiazepines.

The 100-day blueprint should have read “100 days to create, 100 years to finish.” In the private sector, if you fail to deliver on time and on budget, you’re fired, you’re down the road – you’re lucky if you get a second chance.

But when the public’s paying your salary, common sense goes out the window. We’ve all heard the arguments some anchor projects are delayed because Government officials want to get the designs right before pouring the concrete.

That could be a fair comment, but it’s inconsistent with what else is happening in the city. So what is going on?

Apparently, increasing building costs are partly to blame. You can understand that to a certain degree, but the bus exchange is open and the justice building is taking shape.

A CERA spokesman says “ministers and CERA meet with council regularly to discuss a wide range of topics, including anchor projects worked on joint by crown and council such as Metro Sport Facility and Performing Arts Precinct.

Sometimes the Crown has to withhold things for reasons of commercial sensitivity or other valid reasons, just as the council does.”

Could it be the reality of the business cases for some of the anchor projects is putting the Government off? Take the convention centre; media have requested to see the business case, but have only received a censored copy.

In the weekend, Lianne Dalziel expressed concern that the only new building in Manchester St, since the earthquake, where Westend Jewellers was, is to be demolished by CERA to make way for road widening as a boulevard for the expected foot traffic. One wonders where this so called additional foot traffic will come from?

It’s amazing how the narrative on time frames change over three weeks. In early June, I asked the Prime Minister on Newstalk ZB if there was such a cost blowout of the convention centre, why not just reduce the size and just get on with it. He said that’s “potentially an option, but you just have to make sure it’s fit for purpose.”

A week later, Lianne Dalziel expressed concerns about whether the centre would be ready in time for a major conference already booked. Days later Gerry Brownlee fronted at Parliament’s financial and expenditure committee and said it was “highly unlikely” it would be finished and claimed he was surprised that “they actually booked it.” Forgive those trying to be positive on the Government’s deadlines.

Brownlee went on to say plans for the convention centre would be reconsidered given the council’s decision to save the town hall. Was that just an unconvincing attempt to blame others? Maybe international investors will give the city a hand?

Remember the two CERA staff members who went on a six-day trade mission to India and Sri Lanka to attract international investors? There’s that old saying: “They couldn’t organise a p**s-up in a brewery.”

Sadly, I doubt a BYO will help either.

In The Know Hub popular with residents Hundreds of people have already been helped with their repair or rebuild issues and now the popular In the Know Hub has been extended until 27 August 2015.

Since the Hub opened in late April, more than 2000 people have been through the doors to talk to experts for information to assist them with making decisions and establishing the next steps in their repair or rebuild process.

The ongoing demand and the value for residents in having people to talk to face-to-face means the decision to extend the Hub was an easy one says CanCERN Project Manager Brian Parker.

“Being able to assist people with upto-date information and having them come back and talk to the same people without having to repeat their story has really helped residents work through their issues.”

“People visiting have told me that it’s worth making the effort to get to the Hub because they’ve had the opportunity to talk to multiple agencies

in one go. It’s been great having all the different groups here working together to help people make progress.”

Organisations such as CanCERN, the Earthquake Commission and the Residential Advisory Service have all been on hand to speak with residents and regular seminars on rebuild and repair topics are available to attend.

“The seminars have been particularly well supported and we’ve put these online for people to look at too. They’re led by specialist staff on topics like cash settlements and rebuilding with confidence and these will continue now the Hub will be open longer.”

The In the Know Hub is located in Eastgate Shopping Centre and is open Monday – Wednesday 9am-6pm and from 9am-8pm on Thursdays.

An Accessible City, the transport chapter of the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan, is focused on creating a travel network which makes it easy, safe and enjoyable to move around as well as reflecting a greener and people-orientated central city.

Find the right type to save trouble They may all look pretty similar, but the tyres you choose can change the way your car handles, how much fuel you use, and even make the difference between a crash and a near miss.

Gabrielle Stuart reports AS WINTER sets in, the type of tyres you have on your car becomes more important.

On a dry road, you will be able to stop fairly quickly even on tyres with the worst grip.

Driving on a dry road at 80km/h, a Consumer NZ braking test car was able to stop in 27-30m no matter what tyres were fitted.

The difference between the best and the worst tyres tested was 2.8m.

But in wet conditions, the best scoring tyre, Continental ContiPremiumContact 2 E, was able to stop in 36m.

The worst scoring, Supercat DT58703-1, took 48m to stop.

The difference was 12.1m.

Some tyres are designed to be slow-wearing or more fuel-efficient, while others are designed to grip and handle well.

The challenge is finding a tyre that is efficient and also performs well, especially in wet weather.

Consumer NZ gives tyres a rating based on dry and wet weather

cornering, dry and wet weather braking and the rolling resistance, which will make tyres more fuelefficient.

That means its top rated tyres aren’t necessarily the best at handling or most efficient, but are good all-round.

The factor it doesn’t measure is tyre wear, or which tyres will last longer.

That is difficult to measure and depends on a huge variety of factors, including your car, the way you drive, the conditions of the road and even the weather.

In some parts of the world, particularly northern Europe, drivers will keep several sets of tyres for different seasons.

Winter tyres are designed to stay flexible in freezing temperatures, but they grip badly and wear out faster in warm weather.

Summer tyres are designed to handle well on hot roads, but will get hard and slippery in the cold.

Get the right tyres CHANGE: Consumer NZ has rated its top pick tyres for performance in wet and dry conditions, and the effect they have on your fuel economy.

Mr Taylor said about half his customers were just looking for the cheapest tyre.

Of the other half, many wanted a specific brand they trusted, with Yokohama, Bridgestone or Pirelli tyres most often asked for.

He said Yokohama was a brand he often recommended, as it was a “top of the line” tyre but also very affordable.

Some people asked about fuel economy using different tyres.

Low rolling resistance tyres can improve fuel economy noticeably, because they need less force to drive them.

But the state of roads in Christchurch meant they were less effective, Mr Taylor said.

“They work well on a good road. The concept of better fueleconomy tyres is 100 per cent proven, but you need the surface to support the tyres to see the benefit. If the roads are rough you don’t have that surface.”

No matter the brand, tyre pressure can affect your fuel efficiency, handling and the speed the tyres wear out.

Consumer NZ says a 20 per cent drop in pressure increases the rate your tyres will wear out by 20 per cent.

Under-inflated tyres could also reduce fuel-efficiency by up to four per cent.

If looked after properly, a new, good quality tyre should last for 50,000km.

Once you have chosen the brand and type of tyre you’re after, you still need to get a tyre of the right size and shape.

By Tom Doudney MORE RISK but better returns for ratepayers – that’s the focus of a new strategy which proposes increasing the Selwyn District Council’s property holdings.

The move would see the district council increase the value of its property holdings from $10 million to $60 million.

This would see property making up 28.2 per cent of its investments, as opposed to the current 5.3 per cent.

The change is outlined in a draft commercial property strategy.

District council property and commercial manager Douglas Marshall acknowledged that investing more in property and less in cash holdings meant taking on increased risk.

However, he said the new strategy outlined measures to minimise risk, such as restrictions on the type of tenant for the property, the amount invested in any property, where the property was located and the length of lease period.

“A prudent investor will have a mix of investments to balance the returns and risks,” Mr Marshall said.

The tyre markings should be on the side of your tyre, but it looks like a confusing jumble of letters and numbers unless you know what they mean.

Take a fairly typical one: P185/65R14 86H. The P isn’t always shown, but means it is a passenger tyre, 185 is the tyre width in millimetres, and 65 is the profile: It means the height is 65 per cent of the width.

R means radial construction, and 14 is the rim diameter, measured in inches, 86 is the load index, but it isn’t directly related to a weight, you’ll have to look up the maximum load on a table.

In this case, it means the tyre can support up to 530kg.

H is the speed rating, which typically range from Q or 160km/h, to Y or 300km/h. In this case, H means 210km/h.

More flights from Singapore to boost city’s economy AN INCREASE in Singapore Airlines flights coming to Christchurch this summer is expected to boost visitor spending in the city.

Yesterday the airline announced it will operate additional flights to Christchurch this summer.

Its daily service will increase to between nine and 10 flights a week between December 2 and February 15, 2016.

Christchurch Airport chief executive Malcolm Johns said the supplementary flights reflect an extra 7290 seats into Christchurch.

“That will bring an additional $15 million in visitor spending.

Given 75 per cent of the international visitors that arrive via Christchurch also visit other areas, this will have a positive impact on our regional economies,” he said.

There was likely to be a need for premises for facilities such as medical centres and Government services such as Work and Income New Zealand, as well as more businesses moving into Izone.

Cr Miller said getting a better return on investments could help keep rates at a lower level or help pay for services provided to the public.

Pressure on winter sport teams As June draws to an end, the winter sport season has passed the halfway point, with plenty still to play for in all of the codes. Reporter Andrew Voerman looks at how each competition is shaping up as the business end draws closer

Rugby

Marist Albion and Lincoln University have been the only sides to win both of their first two top six games, building off their impressive Hawkins Cup campaigns, where they finished with the two best points differentials.

New Brighton and Christchurch are currently in the two other semi-final spots, but University and Sydenham are still in the hunt, even if they have both lost their first two top six matches.

Based on past form, New Brighton would seem likely to be the third side to make it in, with the other three scrapping for the final spot – University, who faced difficult clashes with Lincoln and Marist first up in the top six, would be the favourite to claim it.

Cashmere Technical are on the verge of a third straight Mainland Premier League title, holding challengers Nelson Suburbs at an arms’ length after the second round-robin.

Nelson are seven points behind, and will play their game in hand against Universities on Sunday, where a win would bring them within four.

They meet Tech for the third and final time this season on August 1, where a win could bring them within one, or, if Tech slip up before then, put them into the lead.

Ferrymead Bays may be the form side of the competition at the moment, having racked up successive 5-0 wins, but would need an implosion from both Tech and Nelson in order to come out on top – an unlikely prospect.

The Women’s Premier League is perhaps the closest competition in the city, with three sides separated at the top by just six points, with six rounds remaining.

For Cashmere Technical, who sit first, on goal difference, with 19 points, and Universities, who sit in third on 13, the mission is simple: Win all of their remaining games - which include two against each other – and they will win the title, toppling Coastal Spirit from the throne they’ve held for the last three years.

For Coastal, it’s a bit tougher: If they win out, they will need Tech, who currently hold a 13-goal advantage, to slip up at least once in their other games.

St Thomas’ first 15 look for consistency to make the top six

ST THOMAS’ first 15 have seen reward for their change in training regime this season in the UC Championship.

Coaches Steve Hart and Paul Burton decided to change the training schedule this year from two sessions a week to four, and it is paying dividends.

Hart said the boys themselves pushed for the change.

“The boys drove the change in training and it is making a big difference out on the field. We don’t have a team of stars but they are just working for each other.”

After only two wins last year, St Thomas shared the wooden spoon with Waimea College The team didn’t need to look far for motivation, and so far this season they have delivered ,with four victories and one draw.

Last weekend the team had a 15-14 win over Timaru Boys’ High School.

Hart (right) said this season they have had the input of Faimalo Magele alongside Rowan O’Gorma and Brett Frew to add to the coaching group.

“Having those outside influences and new voices in the group is in-

At the halfway mark of the season the team reassessed their goals and making the top six is now their main priority.

“We are pushing for that top-six finish. The next few games will be crucial for us, particularly with Burnside next who are on similar points to us.”

Hart said he feels the best is yet to come for the side.

“The games we have been winning, I don’t think we have done so playing our best rugby which is certainly a positive. That big game is coming and it will just be a matter of time before the boys show it on the field.”

Consistency has plagued the team this season and it will be crucial to getting their goal of a top six finish.

With a relatively new team, Hart said it is always exciting watching the boy’s progress throughout the season.

“Watching them not just improve as rugby players but as men is a great part of the job. It is so rewarding.”

FORMER CRUSADERS back Norman Berryman has died of a heart attack, aged 42.

Berryman played 30 games for the Crusaders between 1998 and 2000, and was part of three title-winning sides. He played one game for the All Blacks, against the Springboks in 1998.

Crusaders chief executive Hamish Riach said the team and organisation would like to pass on their thoughts and prayers to the Berryman family at this very sad time.

“Norm was with us for three seasons, won three titles, and left an amazing impression on everyone in the organisation that he met. He made an instant connection with our fans because he was such a down-to-earth, likeable guy – with the most remarkable smile.”

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder, who captained Berryman in the late 90s, remembers a man who was a true Crusader with an incredible positivity that rubbed off on all of those who knew him.

“Norm was a great player but more importantly just such a nice bloke. This news comes as a real shock to all of us who played alongside him. He was a man who loved playing footy and his attitude was infectious.”

The Cashmere Technical midfielder has received a scholarship to attend and play football at Quinnipiac University in the United States, whose sports teams have adopted the American predator as their mascot.

He will make the journey in early August, leaving Christchurch behind for the state of Connecticut, which is nestled just north of New York on the eastern seaboard.

Attending an American college to play football first occurred to Oscar when he was a member of the Asia-Pacific Football Academy where it was emphasised as a logical move for any budding youngster.

Early last year, he signed on with recruitment company USA Sport Connect, which helps talented young athletes put themselves in front of American colleges, and had plenty of coaches reach out to him to say they liked what they saw.

Ceri was a defender with Christchurch United in the national league 1980s, then professionally with Oxford United in the United Kingdom, where the boys lived for the first few years of their lives. He was also an All Whites international.

Ceri’s father Gwyn was a defender as well; born in Wales, he played professionally for English side Crystal Palace in the 1950s and 60s, before moving out here, where he played for and coached Christchurch United, amongst other roles.

The defending gene has been passed on to Oscar, who predominantly plays at right back, but has mostly starred for Tech in midfield this season, scoring several goals of a spectacular nature, including a brace against Halswell United as they advanced in the last round of the Chatham Cup. Oscar will make the move to the US in early August, swapping the climax of Tech’s season for pre-season at Qunnipiac; the first of four he will complete during his time there, as he studies towards a masters degree in biochemistry to boot.
