No decision yet on mall expansion plans

BY GABRIELLE STUART Expensive bus stop and pedestrian crossing changes on Main North Rd are being considered because of a proposed expansion of Northlands mall.

But the mall has not decided the size of the expansion or if it will happen at all, and the city council does not know the costs yet.

Moving the existing bus stops somewhere else could cost about $150,000, but the cost of the new

stops is not yet known.

The city council is looking at changing its bus stops and crossings, because the planned expansion would include an indoor bus passenger lounge.

The Shirley-Papanui Community Board was due to make a decision on it last week, but said that was not possible until they had more information.

Kiwi Property, which owns the mall, was given resource consent last year for an expansion.

Under the consent the mall could expand up to 6353 sq m, right to Main North Rd, and could also build a new 329-space car park.

The community board was told in a report that the expansion was likely to go ahead this year.

But Kiwi Property chief executive Chris Gudgeon said that was not true.

He said the expansion would depend on a lot of factors, including getting retailers involved. “We don’t have a firm plan to pro-

The resource consent lasts for five years, and the plans could be changed at any point.

WW1 soldier photo finds way to Avonhead home

Almost 100 years after Cornelius Crimins left for World War 1, his photograph has been given to an Avonhead family who believe he is a relative of theirs.

Rolleston resident Annette Foster had held the colourised photograph of Private Crimins in safe keeping for more than 15 years.

It was found underneath the Rolleston Memorial Hall’s stage before the building was demolished in 1999, along with photographs of fellow World War 1 soldiers Samuel Francis Haughey, and brothers William and Percy Buckner.

They then came into the possession of Mrs Foster, a Selwyn district councillor at the time, who set about trying to find living relatives of the soldiers.

Relatives of the Buckner brothers were located and claimed their photographs in 2000. Earlier this year, Jane O’Flaherty, a relative of Haughey, took possession of his photograph after an article in the Selwyn Times.

Now Mrs Foster has handed over Crimins’ photo as well to Avonhead residents Caroline and John Crimmins who believe the soldier was a family member on John’s side, in

her up in the phone book and delivered her a copy of the newspaper after reading the article.

Mrs Foster said her son in law had searched for New Zealand land holdings under the name ‘Crimins’ and had found none – suggesting the possibility that the name being spelled with one ‘m’ could have been a mistake.

She was pleased to bring closure to the matter.

No decision yet on Northlands expansion • From page 1 The board was supposed to decide where to put new pedestrian crossings on Main North Rd, which would be controlled by traffic lights.

But he said there were already three sets of lights on the short stretch of road, and a fourth could be installed when the new Papanui Parallel cycleway was put in.

“That’s a lot of potential stops for traffic, and that street is already congested at peak times.”

The board also requested more information on how much the changes might cost, and whether they were expected to be longterm or short-term solutions.

“It’s not change we’re looking at, it’s big dollars. We need all the information before making a decision with ratepayers money.”

After the board has made a decision, it will be put to a city council committee to look at, and then the city council as a whole.

That process could take several months.

Mr Gudgeon said Kiwi Property would continue to work closely with the city council around the changes, and would let both the city council and the public know when the expansion plans were decided.

Road safety plan criticised

BY GABRIELLE STUART A plan to make a St Albans intersection safer has been met with criticism from business owners and cycle groups.

Under the plan, the entrances to the intersection of Westminster and Cranford Sts would become three laned, with a separate rightturning lane.

The intersection has become busier since the earthquakes, and the St Albans School is concerned it is dangerous for children crossing on the way to school.

The aim is to make it safer by reducing the traffic bottleneck there.

But about 15 on-street car parks would need to be cut, and there would be no cycle lanes.

Willow Shoes owner Georgie Falloon said it could be a disaster for small businesses in the area.

The shops around the intersection include a dairy, a cafe, a liquor store, a dentist and several small businesses.

Most have no on-street parking.

Ms Falloon had seen the area change a lot since opening the shop six years ago.

“This area was run-down before the earthquakes, and the new businesses have brought a lot of people into the area and really improved it. It was a conscious decision of mine to stay here, but we can’t afford to lose all our parking.”

There are currently about 20 car parks around the intersection, and under the plan about 15 would go, although three new

parks would be created.

But St Albans School has asked for the changes to be made, to make it safer for pupils.

Principal Ginnie Warren was not available to speak to the Nor’West News yesterday, but she called for changes to the intersection earlier this year, because she was worried pupils might be hit by cars while trying to cross the intersection.

But Spokes Canterbury was also concerned about safety at the intersection, and opposed the plan.

The plan includes cycle stop areas in front of traffic, but no cycle lanes.

Submissions convener Dirk De Lu said it would be “a disaster”, because cyclists would need to navigate through lanes of traffic to

get to the stop areas.

“If you create cycle infrastructure that does not connect, people will stop using it. If they get on their bike and everything’s great on the cycle lane, but it drops them off at the intersection of horrible and worse, they will get off their bikes because they feel their lives are at risk.”

He said installing cycle lanes with bollards would be the safest option for cyclists.

But that would not be possible with the proposed changes, because the intersection isn’t wide enough.

Shirley-Papanui Community Board chairman Mike Davidson said the board would look at changing the plan if that was needed.

“We need to encourage people to cycle, we need to make sure the intersection is safe so school children can cross safely, we need to make sure that cars can flow through it and support the local economy and make sure businesses can be accessed.”

There would inevitably be negative effects for some people involved, he said.

The proposal is currently open for public submissions.

Submissions were due to close today, but the closing date has been postponed a week to June 22.

Recently the Nor’West News reported that Carol Donaldson was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for her services to people with intellectual disabilities. This was incorrect, she was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit.

Bar tab not claimed

A $100 bar tab has yet to be claimed at O’Sheas Public House. The reward was offered to anyone who could identify two men who broke into the bar and stole the social club’s safe last month.

Police had found a safe after carrying out a search warrant on a property which they thought could have been from the bar, but owner Alan Stroud confirmed it wasn’t.

More than $500 was in the safe.

Nepal fundraiser

Koi Sushi on Marshland Rd is holding a fundraiser on Thursday with all proceeds going to the Red Cross for relief efforts in Nepal following the devastating earthquake in April. The fundraiser will take place at the Koi Sushi and Gallery at 114 Marshland Rd between 5-8pm. All staff in the shop will also be volunteering their time.

READERS HAVE THEIR SAY ON THE NEW BRIGHTON PIER FISHING DEBATE Readers respond to the issues plaguing the New Brighton Pier with people breaking the fishing rules.

Greg Johns: About time they banned fishing on the pier. I don’t think it was intended to be this way.

If they were to continue, make it over winter months and leave summer for public and maybe ice cream vendors or a band at the end for a nice weekend thing to do instead of fish guts and if you’re lucky a hook stuck in your face.

Yoshiro Tamaki: I have read the article about the problems of the fishers at the pier. Actually I know that the pier is one of the best spot for fishing in Christchurch and it can be fun for everybody to watch people fish there as Mrs Collins said in the article, as long as it is safe and not disturbing people to walk and get to the front of the pier.

I suggest a new fishing deck to be installed below and at the end of the present pier walkway. The galvanised steel gating deck is to be accessible from the pier walk level by stairs and it would be 3-4m below or 2-3m higher than the highest tide level of the sea water.

Probably the area of the deck need not to be much larger than the present fishing zone so I hope that it would not be impossible to use the existing pier piles to support the steel deck.

It will separate fishers from the visitors and it should be great fun for everybody to watch fishing on the new deck from the present pier

level. Hope it will solve the frustration raised among the people.

Malcolm Allison: I read your article and this has prompted me to have my say on the matter. Personally I believe all fishing should be banned on the pier.

The pier is for the people, not just a handful of ungrateful, rude and selfish fishers who feel they have sole right to it.

This has been going on for long enough now and no one seems to want to abide by the rules.

The one and only time I visited, some time ago with relatives from overseas, we were disgusted by the state the pier was in, blood and guts from fish which of course brought the seagulls around making it a very unpleasant and thus not making it a very good experi-

ence at all.

My view is . . . ban all fishing from the pier.

Gordon Heyward: A couple of weeks ago I read an article about visitor numbers declining on the Brighton Pier.

I recently decided to take a look for myself as I’ve not walked the pier for a long time. It may be better if I called it Fishermen’s Wharf.

When I got to the end I would have liked to have sat for a while and just take in the sea air.

I had to keep some distance in case I got hooked with a flying fish hook.

The few seats that were there were overtaken with fishermen, not just for sitting on but for putting all their gear on.

As I stood and leaned against the rail, I watched a bloke pull-

ing up a crab pot. He had one fairly large crab about 15cm across which he tipped out on the pier.

The poor thing was on its back and its legs were going.

After putting his pot back in the water, he went over to his crab and with his boot, stood on each claw and broke it off. I guess that was so it couldn’t nip him. He then picked up body which was still alive and threw it in his bag for taking home. Even the two claws that he left on the floor, were still moving.

So what does the pier need to attract more people?

At the end of the pier it needs a small bar plus a few chairs and tables. It would be nice to go down there on a nice Sunday afternoon and have a coffee or a beer while you listen to a group or entertainer.

There would have to have a

This idea was put to the council before and nothing was done.

Those who continue to disobey the city council rules should be heavily fined and lose their fishing gear.

Rangers need to monitor the pier in all weather (even in the colder months), as it is an all-year sport.

Will it take someone being caught eye by a casting rod hook to see urgent action on this matter?

Some older folk may find it a long way to walk. On some of the long piers in the United Kingdom they have a small train to transport people to the end. But that would be a lot of work laying rails.

What about that vehicle they had at the airport that they no longer seem to use. It holds about seven or eight people and it would it would give that thing a new lease of life.

It was a stupid idea putting a library and coffee shop there. Why didn’t they put a night club like there used to be. We are very short of night life in the city.

There are many other things that can be done with Brighton but its fighting against others who think they know everything. But the things they try never seem to work.

The fullback played his 150th game for the club last weekend following in the footsteps of his cousin Colin Stokes who played 200 games for the senior side.

“I’ve been a Burnside boy since I was four and it was a dream to play 100 games then the next step was 150.”

He ran out on Burnside Park with his son LaDanian, who also plays for the club in the under-8s side, for his 150th.

Davis said it was a special occasion particularly against Christchurch who he sees as one of the club’s biggest rivals.

Burnside won 38-27 and Davis was able to dot down in the milestone match.

Davis debuted for the senior side in 2002 straight out of the Christ’s College first 15.

While he can’t remember his first game he said the difference in physicality and how big the other players were was something that struck him in his first few games.

Davis could have reached 200 games but took four years out from playing for Burnside to play for Northland in the National Provincial Championship and in Spain.

While Burnside have not had the most successful year in 2015 Davis was involved in some championship-winning teams over the years.

He said winning the club com-

petition in 2006 was one of the most memorable moments.

“It was the first time Burnside had won since 1993 so that was massive for us especially after 2005 when we lost the final so that was definitely most memorable.”

After 13 years of playing senior rugby he said the toughest guy he has played against would be New Brighton’s Aaron McCoy, who recently brought up his 150th game also.

He said they played against each other through high school and rep sides and always had a word with him on the field.

Davis, a personal trainer, said this season was to be his last and would look to take a year away from the game to spend more time with his family.

He said he would like to return the year after and help out with some coaching possibly at the colts level before looking at moving up the coaching ranks.

The Canterbury Men’s Netball Association has received an ANZ Netball Grant worth nearly $2000.

Jemma Angus who applied for the grant on behalf of the association, says they had to find a new venue after women’s netball became so popular at the Hagley netball courts.

“The fees for the new venue were just a bit out of reach for the team so this grant has helped immensely,” she says.

This year ANZ is awarding a total of $100,000 in netball grants to help clubs, schools, social teams and fans achieve their dreams.

ANZ head of sponsorship Susan McGregor says the programme was launched in 2012 to support fans and help netballers get to the next level in the game.

“Netball is one of the country’s most popular sports with tens of thousands of players at schools, clubs and social teams across the country.”

ANZ senior personal manager Nick Buick says the Canterbury Men’s Netball Association has six teams from which they select a rep team that play regularly against the Mainland Tactix. They lost their venue due to rapidly expanding women’s netball.

“Men’s netball is really strong in the region because of this league, and we were really happy to help them out by covering their increased venue fees.”

Proud record for squash team

The Christchurch Boys’ High School squash team has now won the South Island championships for more than 10 years in a row.

The team of Jayden Millard, Charlie Barker and Matthew Duncan won the championships in Timaru last weekend adding to the Canterbury secondary schools tournament they had already won.

Boys’ High breezed through the round-robin matches before the semi-final where they defeated James Hargest School 3-0.

They met Southland Boys’ High in the final again winning 3-0.

Jayden won his match against Mitchell Kempton 15-13, 15-13, 11-15, 15-6, Charlie beat Caleb Madden 15-17, 15-12, 16-14, 7-15, 16-14 and Matthew was too good for Regan McNaughton 1510, 15-11, 15-13.

Coach John Brown said while the scores looked one sided on paper the matches were hard fought.

“They were very tough games.

The players are relatively equal with not a lot between them and the scores could have easily been turned, it can go right down to the wire. It was made harder with four games on the Saturday and two on the Sunday too.”

With those two trophies locked away they are setting their sights on the national championships in August to be held in Palmerston North.

Last year they finished runnersup to Tauranga Boys’ College who have become an arch rival for Boys’ High at the national competition Brown said.

Seeds have not been released for this year’s tournament but Brown said he expected his side to be a little lower than the top two.

He said his side was not as strong as last year with two of his senior players moving to Hamilton.

“It has knocked a major hole in our team but we’ve still got some reasonably talented players there who will front up and do very well.”

Brown said he has not settled on the team of seven to head to the nationals but was looking to bring a couple of younger development players through to the senior team.

There is an extra incentive for the team to perform well at the nationals with a New Zealand side picked to travel to Australia for a series against their best players.

Online services make life easier for patients Riccarton Clinic is now able to provide a number of services online for enrolled patients making it easier to book an appointment, order a repeat prescription, and view their own lab results. All of these are accessible from the Clinic’s website: www.riccartonclinic.co.nz.

Football centre in Yaldhurst opened Prime Minister John Key opened the Christchurch Football Centre at a special ceremony in front of representatives from Government, sport, business and hundreds of junior football players on Thursday.

The state-of-the art facility in Yaldhurst includes two new full-size artificial pitches with fit-for-purpose floodlights, natural turf intermediate fields and junior pitches.

The football centre is the first stage of the International Sports Centre and the brainchild of Christchurch businessman and philanthropist Slava Meyn.

His aim is to create a world-class sports facility to encourage greater sporting participation and provide a high-performance environment for the city’s youngsters.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel and New Zealand Football chief executive Andy Martin also addressed the 150 guests to congratulate Mr Meyn on his vision and generosity.

After arriving in Christchurch in 2009, Mr Meyn was surprised by the lack of quality sporting venues in the city, which was exacerbated by the earthquakes, and embarked on a mission to build a state-ofthe-art sports facility, complete with internationally qualified professional coaches.

As a former president of a lower league professional football club in Russia and recreational footballer, his initial focus has been on the round ball code, by establishing the Christchurch Football Academy.

The academy is a not-for-profit charitable trust, which provides all-year football programmes and has become the anchor tenant of the Christchurch Football Centre.

“These fields are a really exciting beginning to our ultimate ambition,” says Mr Meyn.

“Soon we will start construction on a clubhouse with 10 changing rooms, a café and spectators’ grandstand. That next stage

Mark Darvill, the Clinic’s General Manager, says, “we think patients will find the online service useful as they’ll receive a text and an email when the prescription is ready to collect but remember, the doctor must be happy for them to have repeat prescriptions before they can use this service.”

The website gives the patients direct access to HealthInfo, a health information website by the Canterbury District Health Board. Mark says, “when patients read information on

HealthInfo they can be confident that this is the information your medical professional wants you to read.”

Another online service recently introduced is a browser-based ‘portal’ called Manage My Health.

It has many features but the main benefits are that patients will be able to view their own medical records and laboratory test results (as soon as the lab publishes them). Patients should ask their doctor or at Reception if they are interested in this.

Riccarton Clinic is open every day of the year from 8am to 8pm, with a pool of more than 20 doctors rostered to cover all the shifts. Appointments are only available for enrolled patients but casual and enrolled patients can drop-in at any time. Drop-in patients will be triaged by a nurse and see a doctor in order of the clinical need so the length of wait can vary.

If you’d like access to these online services, as well as the extended hours of opening, all you need to do is enrol at Riccarton Clinic. Their books are still open and new patients are always welcome.

The football centre has built a strong relationship with Mainland Football and local schools and is already hosting the secondary schools First XI Premiership, while Christ’s College, Rangi Ruru, and Universities FC will also be using the facility for their sports programmes.

Football, however, is only the first part of Mr Meyn’s vision to create an International Sport Centre across 20ha that can accommodate the needs of high-performance athletes of different codes, as well as recreational sports for the local community.

Mr Meyn has created the foundations for this project, and he is now looking for additional partners from other sporting codes, the city council, schools, universities and local businesses to continue the momentum. The next goal is to build a 50m swimming pool.

‘Contempo’ exhibition Monique Lacey I am inspired by surface and texture -the kind you find on weathered, peeling walls.

My current body of work investigates surface, line and materiality and how these interact with each other. My paintings are built up using numerous layers of paint, both acrylic and oil, some of which are subsequently removed to reveal parts of previous layers. I manipulate the paint with different tools and brushes, enjoying the challenge of working within these boundaries and finding a balance in each piece of work. My colour palette consists of mostly muted, earthy tones which help to create a mood to work in and determines the ways in which I move my brushes. I look for accidental texture and bring intention in my response.

From the hilltop on the way to Akaroa, and towards the end of Kiatorete Spit, I made some quick drawings and took some photos.

Last year I took three months leave from my work to try and connect with my painting again. Through these works, I have attempted to communicate the sense of place and the feelings I experienced being at the edge of the sea, hemmed in by hills, walking streets that were a mix of houses and vacant spaces. These works are myself concentrating on remembering one small period of time in one particular place.

Power boards can only take so much

I’m not sure if we can blame global warming but the weather in the last week has fluctuated between extremes of southerly rain and nor’westerly warmth.

Both have led to nine calls this week to incidents involving power lines or power feeds to houses. No serious damage has occurred from these.

Unfortunately, there have been a few incidents where damage has occurred.

One in Parklands on Sunday was quite possibly the result of a power board catching on fire. The fact that a fridge, a freezer and a washing machine were plugged into this power board does make it quite likely.

Fridges and freezers have compressors that start up regularly as the temperature inside raises enough for the thermostat to react. Each time the compressor starts, the power feed experiences an enhanced draw of current. If the power board is prone to failing this is the time it will do so.

If by coincidence both fridge and freezer start up together then the likelihood of problems doubles. Both these appliances should be plugged into the wall outlet.

Never through a power board.

Another ashes fire, this time in Parklands last Saturday, luckily happened during the day. Even then there was damage to the wall and the ceiling above the porch where the fire started.

A new community is being built in Bromley thanks to Habitat for Humanity and corporate partner, Infor.

Crusaders players and staff have joined with Infor employees by rolling up their sleeves over the past month and helping to build 11 new homes for Habitat Hand-up Christchurch.

The $7.6m project involves the construction of 21 homes to re-house families in need following the earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 which destroyed 20,000 homes.

Habitat Hand-up Christchurch will see families housed in decent homes, eliminating the health issues faced in their current houses and putting them on the path to home ownership over a 10-year period.

Volunteers from Infor, the Crusaders and the Christchurch community have been working at Bayswater Cres and Foresthill Pl in Bromley, building 11 of the project homes. With construction now welladvanced, the first six homes are scheduled to be occupied by July.

The Crusaders, Infor and Habitat for Humanity recently hosted a street party for the community to celebrate the progress of the project to date.

“Over the course of the

“It was humbling to be there and see how grateful these families are for the help they’re receiving. But this is no handout – these families have been working incredibly hard themselves

to get their new homes built and it is awesome to see them so close to being able to move out of their current sub-standard living situations and into the new houses that they’ve been so involved in constructing,” Blackadder said.

Families selected in the project build were those who have been severely affected by the housing crisis that resulted from the Canterbury earthquakes. Crusaders commercial partner, Infor, has pledged $10,000 towards the build as part of its corporate sponsorship partnership with Habitat for Humanity International.

“This partnership reflects Infor’s continued commitment to being actively involved in the future of New Zealand, Christchurch and the wider Canterbury region,” said Jo-Anne Ruhl, managing director, Infor Pacific.

The orchestra is made up of a mix of ages and professions who come together for the joy of playing music together.

With several public concerts each year, the orchestra has a sense of purpose about their rehearsals which are the highlight of the week for many members – with friendships, a common purpose, playing music together and having fun making for a happy occasion each week.

“For this concert we will be performing Beethoven's dramatic Overture to Coriolanus, some sublime ballet music from Gounod's Faust, the rousing Eric Coates' Dambusters Overture and A Tribute to Henry Mancini,” said Helen Reddecliffe. “We also welcome Riley Payne to perform Neruda's Classical Trumpet Concerto for Trumpet and Strings. Riley is currently a year 13 student at Cashmere High School where he is an active leader of the trumpet section in a number of groups and is also co-principal of the Christchurch Youth Orchestra. We warmly invite you to a wonderful afternoon of entertainment.”
