Ngai Tahu reveals plans for central city site

A NEW development is set to bring more than 1000 office workers into the central city within two years.

Ngai Tahu Property revealed plans yesterday for two five-storey office buildings, a 600-space car park, a large public piazza and about 70 apartments.

It will be built on the site of the former police station on Cambridge Tce, and the development is set to take up the entire block.

Work is set to start in July, and the first stage is due to finish in October next year.

The BNZ Centre developer Nick Hunt said it was good to see new developments coming into the central city.

But he warned that finding tenants for new buildings could become more difficult, as there was a limited number of tenants who could afford the new central city buildings.

He did not expect to see many more developments of the size.

“There is a limited amount of demand, so I would suspect that there won’t be, at least for several years.

But I would be happy to be proven wrong.”

The Government is set to occupy more than half of one of the office buildings, with Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health and Housing New Zealand staff based there.

A 92-year-old English woman saved her 75-year-old friend from a mugger by ramming him with her mobility scooter.

Eileen Mason and Margaret Seabrook were on their way home from a lunch club meeting when the thief struck from behind a fence.

He saw the contents of Ms Seabrook’s basket, mounted on the front of her scooter, before grabbing Ms Mason by the arm and reaching for her carrier bag. Ms Mason shouted: “Oh, no you don’t,” and hit the accelerator of her scooter.

The would-be thief was knocked to the ground before the great-grandmothers, both of Wiltshire, sped off.

Ms Mason said: “I put my scooter into accelerate and turned really fast. The next thing I know he was on the ground. I thought ‘my gosh’.

“We went through the war and all the bombings. We won’t let a weasel like that hold us back. I would stand up for myself again if I needed to.”

Friction forces review

By Tom Doudney GOVERNANCE OF Canterbury’s public transport system is under review after a letter from the region’s mayors highlighted “ineffective” engagement between councils.

In October the Canterbury Mayoral Forum wrote to the Ministry of Transport asking it to review arrangements, citing “bad relationships” particularly between the city council and Environment Canterbury.

That review is being conducted by the ministry and the chief executives of the city council, the Selwyn and Waimakariri district councils, and ECan, as well as NZTA. A progress report is expected in May. The letter noted that under the current arrangement ECan provide the bus network while the city and district councils are responsible for the infrastructure.

“Ineffective engagement and delivery of this shared responsibility has led to bad relationships over many years, particularly between the Christchurch City Council and Environment Canterbury.”

When commissioners replaced ECan’s elected councillors in 2010, one of their responsibilities was to advise the ministers for the environment and local government whether a review of Canterbury’s public transport arrangements was required.

However, that expectation was subsequently withdrawn by the ministers who said that it was not a problem specific to Canterbury.

At the time a national review had been expected in 2012.

Waimakariri mayor and Mayoral Forum deputy chairman David Ayers said the current approach was not working as well as it could in Canterbury as a result of the impacts of the earthquakes.

“The Mayoral Forum believes there is merit in looking into the structure and operation of the public transport model, particularly as the issues faced post-earthquake have intensified in Greater Christchurch,” Mr Ayers said.

Big pay packets double for women

THE NUMBER of women in Christchurch earning more than $100,000 a year has more than doubled over the past 10 years.

But they represent three per cent of working women, significantly fewer than the 12 per cent of working men earning more than $100,000.

The Statistics New Zealand figures, released this week, compare work and incomes in the 2013 census to those recorded in 2006.

They show a big difference in incomes across genders, even in female-dominated industries.

Women made up 78 per cent of health professionals working in Christchurch at the time of the census.

But six per cent of them earned more than $100,000, compared with 46 per cent of male health professionals.

The education industry was also female dominated, with women making up 74 per cent of education professionals.

The majority of men in the industry, 52 per cent, earned more than $70,000, compared with 22 per cent of women.

Some put the gap down to the fact women were more likely to take time off or work part time because they were raising children, Pay Equity Challenge Coalition spokeswoman Angela McLeod said.

But she believed that was only a minor factor.

“There are a lot of men who want flexible hours, to spend time with their children or for all sorts of different reasons, and the figures show men working part-time roles still earn more than women working parttime. There is a structural discriminaMichelle tion.”

MacWilliam She said employers were becoming more aware of the issue and attitudes were changing, but there was still an “unconscious or conscious discrimination”.

The majority of chief executives, general managers and legislators in Christchurch were men, and 41 per cent of those earned more than $100,000, compared with 18 per cent of women in the roles.

There were similar statistics in male-dominated industries like construction, where four per cent of women working in the trade earned more than $70,000, compared with 11 per cent of men.

Women in the Rebuild founder Michelle MacWilliam said it was a story she heard constantly from women in the group.

Women had a “hard row to hoe” in male-dominated trades, and it

was even more difficult for single parents or ethnic minorities, she said.

That could have far-reaching consequences, she said.

“If there’s a pay disparity, when a woman gets to the later years of her life she will have had less opportunity to save for her retirement, and she’s also more likely to live longer than the average man.”

There are more than 1000 women in the group, and many who had left jobs to start their own businesses said a gender pay gap at their former workplace was a factor in their decision.

But that contributed to a strong small-business culture, and many of them were thriving, she said.

“There has been a great uptake in women going into the business, because they see it as a way of securing their financial future, their independence and work life balance,” she said.

New Zealand was ranked 13th in the World Economic Forum Global Gender Gap Index last year, behind much of Europe but ahead of Australia, which was ranked 24.

The index shows the average income for a woman in New Zealand was $30,982 per year, compared with an average of $50,631 for men.

Rawhiti takes over operations

THE RAWHITI Golf Club is taking over the day-to-day running of the financially-crippled golf course in a bid to save it from closure.

As part of the city council’s Long Term Plan, the Rawhiti golf course is to be closed in September to save $200,000 but the club’s executive committee is not willing to let

that happen.

The city council’s contract with the current professional at the course expires on April 30 and the club takes over the operating of the course on May 1.

The club will still collect the green fees on behalf of the city council until a final decision is made on whether the course will be closed.

Black Widow’s court bid fails again CONVICTED killer Helen Milner has lost her bid to challenge her murder conviction in the Supreme Court.

Milner – known as the Black Widow – was sentenced to life in prison for killing her husband Phil Nisbet in their Halswell home in 2009.

She plied him with pills and tried to make it look like an overdose.

But in its ruling released yesterday, the court said another application for an appeal could be made if further investigation reveals Mr Nisbet may not have died from a drug overdose.

Milner was sentenced to life in prison for the murder.

She appealed against her convictions for murder and attempted murder on the grounds the Crown had not proven the drug could have been administered without Mr Nisbet’s knowledge.

The Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal, saying it was not an element that needed to be proven beyond reasonable doubt.

Milner appealed to the Supreme Court on the ground that the verdicts were unsafe unless the Crown could prove beyond reasonable doubt how the drug was administered.

The Supreme Court upheld the Court of Appeal’s view that the method of administering the drug did not need to be proven.

It was enough that the judge directed the jury to be sure that Milner had drugged Mr Nisbet without his knowledge.

Site plans revealed

Ngai Tahu Property has owned the site since 1995, and originally intended to expand the police sta-

Ngai Tahu Property development manager Gordon Craig said plans for the site included a large public piazza, which would acknowledge the history there.

It was the site of the former King Edward Barracks, and also an important area for Maori, and the history would be incorporated into the design of the piazza.

Club president Mene Mene and other executive members will be volunteering in the pro-shop until the Long Term Plan is finalised by city council.

Mr Mene said it was a very exciting time for the club and they are used to facing big challenges but knew he had the support of everyone at the club and in the community.

What would a typical weekend look like for you?

I’m really more confined to home here in Clarkville, where we’ve got a 4ha farmlet, so most of the time I’m here with the grandchildren on the weekend. There’s always something to do on 4ha.

What would your perfect weekend look like – where would you go, and who with?

Well, I’d be with my wife, of course. We’ve been together 50-odd years. It was our anniversary last weekend, and that was a terrific weekend. We went to Hanmer Springs and stayed at the Heritage Hotel, and we spent some time at the hot pools, did some walking around, and I met some terrific people. It was the only weekend I can remember where I haven’t seen any rugby league, either live or on TV, and that really made it special.

Do you have a favourite place in Canterbury?

It would have to be Hanmer Springs and Kaikoura. We try to break things up with a trip to Hanmer every now and then, I think it’s a great spot.

And I’m doing a development in Kaikoura at the moment, on the slopes of Mt Fyffe. I was up there yesterday and it’s an absolutely beautiful spot, and the seafood is great there.

Do you have any TV shows or reading you like to catch up on the weekend?

I like reading sporting books, and books about great sports people. As for TV programmes, I watch NRL and I watch the news and the odd movie, but that’s about it, I used to like the Australian programme, the Underbelly. The story was true, of course, and I really got into that one.

Printing press rolls again

By Emma-Jane McLennan A PIECE of history has come alive this week when one of The Star’s old printing presses was dusted off and used for the first time in more than 35 years.

The Ferrymead Printing Society – part of the heritage park – has been storing a collection of old printing presses since they were put out of action.

It was “pretty special” to see them back in use, Ferrymead Heritage Park education organiser Garry Parker said.

“Three years ago, when I started this restoration project, I wanted to see people using, and understanding, the old style of printing. It was pretty special to see what we achieved.”

Students from the Canterbury

University School of Fine Arts and the Design & Arts College of New Zealand have been invited to the classes, where they can use the old printing presses.

One of the old printing presses dates back to 1860, when it was used for making galley proofs for the paper.

Another, from the 1940s, was used for making promotional posters.

The Star donated the old printing presses to the Ferrymead Heritage Park about 35 years ago.

Ebola nurse’s $60k flight

THE HELICOPTER flight to Christchurch Hospital for a Southland nurse, suspected of having Ebola, cost more than $60,000.

Recently released figures from the Ministry of Health show a specialist helicopter, capable of carrying an IsoPod for the potentially highly infectious patient, was used to bring Ebola nurse Bronni McBain (right) to Christchurch.

Specialist staff, trained in the use of the IsoPod, were also

used – bringing the total transport costs to $60,321.

In comparison the estimated average cost of an Emergency Air Ambulance Service mis-

sion, of the same length, would be just under $11,000.

Testing to check if Ms McBain had Ebola was another cost, adding up to more than $4500.

The first sample was escorted on a New Zealand Defence Force flight, diverted to Melbourne on it’s way to Darwin.

The flight, accommodation for the person guarding the sample and flight home via a commercial airline the next day cost $2105.

Transportation costs for the second sample were $1400, and testing cost A$1000.

The Canterbury District Health Board had not yet released the costs of Ms McBain’s treatment at the time of print.

Ms McBain had returned from nursing Ebola patients in the hard-hit area of Sierra Leone, Africa, when she developed a high fever on March 8.

She was flown to the specialist ward set up at Christchurch Hospital after she reported feeling unwell during her self-monitoring phase.

She was later cleared of the deadly disease when results came back negative.

Wild weather blows yacht onto beach A BATTERED yacht broke free of its moorings at Corsair Bay in the stormy weather on Wednesday, and was washed up onto the beach.

Aptly named Windswept, the yacht was spotted by Lyttelton resident Isaac Wilson as he walked his dog at about 6am yesterday.

“I’m sure the owner will be surprised – it’s not every day you see a yacht up there,” he said.

Environment Canterbury navigational safety officer, Gary Manch, told The Star yesterday they were “fully aware” of the incident.

“It’s going to be towed away today. The side that was smashing against the rocks is buried in the sand, so we don’t know if it’s damaged yet.”

Ingrid Brook Designer to light up runway Fashion designer Ingrid Brook has been gearing up for the prestigious Canterbury Fashion Beauty Week show tonight. She speaks to Emma-Jane McLennan about sewing her own clothes, dealing with bridezilla mothers and the difficulties the industry is facing How did you get into fashion design, Ingrid?

I started working in clothing straight after I left school. I basically just started making my own designs and found a shop in New Regent St that took my clothes on consignment. It was a little shop called Cream, after the band [Cream, a British rock group in the 1960s]. They took all designer labels, then they said they’d take mine as well so that was really good. That was about 30 years ago, so I was just 18-years-old I guess.

Is that what you always wanted to do?

No, when I left school I wasn’t thinking about going into fashion.

You see, I wasn’t really an achiever at school, although I was really good at cooking and sewing, so I just started sewing for someone

I made everything except my jeans. My friends will tell you, I’d have a new dress every time we went out dancing on a Saturday night, which was probably twice a

month. My friends were like: ‘We really love that’ so that encouraged me to keep sewing. I started sewing classes at intermediate school, just making really simple things like cushions and an apron, and just went from there.

You have your own label nowhow did that come about?

When I started out I was wholesaling to direct outlets around New Zealand, some in the North Island, some in the south, then in about 1983 I moved to a studio on Harewood Rd, near the railway tracks.

It’s more the bridezilla mothers, which are probably worse, so I try to get around those [laughing]. I’ve only done one wedding dress this year but it was stunning, embroidered red silk.

Ready to rock the show •From page 9 I entered the Benson & Hedges Fashion Design Awards in 1989 and won some awards, which was pretty difficult because there was quite a lot of us designers in Canterbury at that time and it was very competitive.

So I had my studio on Harewood Rd for about six years, then I went home for a while as I was starting a family. That’s when I took my client base to make-to-measure only. At that time it became very hard in the clothing industry, with all the new imports coming through and online shopping becoming more available, it was really changing the way people shop.

It took a long time for me to come back to designing, but I now feel that people are coming back to it. They want something individually-styled and made for them, and even our fabric is exclusive so you really can’t get more exclusive than this. I now have my own shop in Redcliffs, where people can buy off the peg or I’ll make to measure.

Some people might see something they like, but want it in a different fabric or more fitted to them, so I can do that.

What are some of the bigger projects you’ve worked on?

Some wedding dresses are quite challenging. I custom-make them when I get an inquiry and they can all be so different. People can be pretty fussy about their dresses – I

What does a normal day look like for you?

Well, usually I come to work, and I’m selling for the first part of the morning. On Monday and Tuesday I don’t open though, that is time I reserve for doing orders, working on special pieces and my collection. On Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays I open 11am-5pm. If I’m not too busy in the shop I’ll just put a note on the door and go out to my workroom, so I can work on pattern-making for my new collection.

What else interests you?

I’m interested in art, fashion of course, shoes and the like. I like going walking too – going on little treks on the Port Hills, which is quite nice and relaxing. I really like pottery as well, although I don’t make it [laughing]. I tried once.

That didn’t go so well. I love to craft things, read, oh, and I really love antiques.

And you’ve mentioned your family – tell me about them?

Well all my family are still together now, living at home. I’ve got two boys, aged 23 and 21, and two girls, aged 18 and 16. They’re all young adults, all grown up, and they’re all into fashion and the arts too, well my daughters at least.

One of my sons is working in hospitality and the other one is getting into carpet-laying.

Deadline for managed repair – 1 June 2015 As the Earthquake Commission nears the completion of its Canterbury Home Repair Programme (CHRP), it needs to know exactly how many repairs are left so it can commit adequate resources to the programme.

For this reason, EQC must identify those customers who wish to be in CHRP. To get clarity, the organisation has set a deadline to close the CHRP to all new customers/ repairs from Monday, 1 June 2015.

From this time on, no further customers will be accepted into CHRP, unless they have a prior agreement with EQR or EQC. This means previously cash-settled customers will no longer be able to opt in to CHRP after this date.

Those customers whose repairs are already underway do not need to do anything – your repairs will be completed as scheduled. If you are an existing CHRP customer yet to have a start date confirmed for your managed repair, we want to help you make a decision.

EQC will be contacting our remaining CHRP customers to discuss their particular circumstances and concerns in order to reach a decision on the best settlement option available for them under the Earthquake Commission Act 1993.

Many customers in this group are in dispute with EQC or are still awaiting a decision on whether their claim is over cap. Some people will be frustrated at delayed repairs. EQC will be contacting customers in these groups soon.

CHRP customers, impacted by potentially having Increased Flooding Vulnerability (IFV) land damage, will be treated separately so they are not affected by the 1 June deadline.

After EQC has tried to contact customers, if they have not decided or cannot be contacted by 1 June 2015, EQC will assume they do not wish to be repaired and may move to cash settlement – one option available under the Act.

Land settlements for IFV EQC has started offering customers a settlement for land more likely to flood as a result of the Canterbury earthquakes.

It is the first insurer in the world to provide cover for this type of land damage, known as increased flooding vulnerability (IFV), and EQC began telling the first customers whether their land is eligible in March. About 9,600 customers will be contacted and their claims settled throughout 2015.

Extensive flood modelling and aerial ground scanning, supplemented by thousands of site assessments, is being used to confirm the IFV status of each property.

Settlement packs will include an engineering report and a valuation report where applicable, and EQC will also be calling each customer to resolve any questions.

Customers may request a review of the decision at any time, and can provide additional information to support the review.

EQC is continuing to work through an approach to settling claims for land damage known as increased liquefaction vulnerability (ILV). The timeframe for completing this work is yet to be confirmed.

EQC to recover CHRP excess Canterbury Home Repair Programme (CHRP) customers will soon start receiving invoices for the excess payments on their building repairs.

EQC has already recovered excess from more than 140,000 customers whose claims have been cash-settled.

Customer and Claims General Manager Gail Kettle says excess amounts for nearly 70,000 CHRP customers will be calculated throughout 2015.

“We estimate most invoices will be between $200 and $600, but not everyone will have excess to pay.”

Customers will have three months to pay their excess, with flexible payments terms available.

Before customers receive their invoices, they will be sent an information pack about excess.

EQC will also be calling vulnerable customers again, as well as those with excess of more than $600, after they receive their invoices, to answer any questions.

By Gabrielle Stuart FEWER PEOPLE were working in Christchurch two years after the earthquakes than were working in the city in 2006, new data shows.

The information released by Statistics New Zealand this week uses data from the last census to track and compare occupations and incomes across regions and industries.

It shows that the number of people working in Christchurch dropped by three per cent, in spite of national figures rising.

The number of workers dropped

in several industries, including agriculture, manufacturing, retail, hospitality, transport, finance and insurance, real estate, administration and arts.

But it wasn’t all bad news.

There was a predictable rise in the numbers working in construction, but the education, health, science, safety and services industries also improved.

There were more than 173,000 people living and working in Christchurch at the time of the census.

The average pay rate rose across almost all industries, but the majority of workers were still earning less than $40,000 per year in many industries.

Across all industries, 45 per cent of workers in the city earned $40,000 per year or less.

Almost 33 per cent of workers earned between $40,000 and $70,000, and 11 per cent earned between $70,000 and $100,000.

There were eight per cent of Cantabrians in the top income bracket, earning more than $100,000.

Never a dull moment in the newsroom WHAT IS it like, working in a newsroom?

It’s a question I’m often asked by curious friends and acquaintances, one I try to explain – but often can’t.

I remember the very first day I walked into The Star’s newsroom.

I was 17-years-old, frightfully nervous and hoping to make a good impression on my few days here.

The room felt incredibly bright and busy as reporters hammered away on keyboards, took notes and glanced up at ‘the new girl’: Me. As I was shown to a vacated corner desk, my new neighbour pulled her headset off, introduced herself as ‘Shelley’ and gushed: “Oh I love work experiencers!”

I liked her straight away.

Minutes later I was drawn into the morning news meeting, an event I found highly confusing as the reporters and editor, Barry Clarke, threw around abbreviations I didn’t know.

“How’s Peg going? We need a few pars on the PX stuff. Any comm board meetings?” was the gist of the conversation.

Someone gave me a story to write. I remember staring at my blank computer screen.

I took the plunge when my fingers hit the first key, joining the others, all tapping away at articles for the week’s papers.

You can only imagine my surprise when mine was published – in the Pegasus Post, I believe. It took a lot of whipping into shape, but the story was deemed ‘a-okay.’ I was over the moon.

I soon got used to the regular churning out of papers, with different deadlines every day of the week.

Some days are quieter. Others, it’s all hands on deck.

Days turned to weeks, and soon after my 18th birthday I was signed on as a bona fide journalist.

That was almost 18 months ago now.

It was – and still is – an exciting job. I love going to work in the morning with no idea what to expect.

I’ve been sent out to cover flooding, armed offenders squad call-outs and fashion events.

I’ve spoken to people when they are on top of the world, and when they feel like the floor has been ripped out from underneath them.

Sometimes I feel more like a detective, as I’ve attempted to track people down to get ‘the story.’ I made 32 calls before tracking down the right person once. Yeah, I counted.

While becoming a part of the newsroom, I started to notice it’s little quirks.

Ross, one of our sub-editors, soon let me know the newsroom was a “banana-free” zone.

“They’re actually radioactive,” I overheard him saying of the despised fruit recently.

“Totally disgusting.”

Barry entertains us with his never-ending puns.

Here are some recent examples: Reporter: “I’ve just finished the gardening story.”

Barry: “Okay, can you prune it back a little?”

Reporter: “I’ve just changed the intro on the Lions Club article.”

Barry: “Has it got a bit more bite?”

Sometimes we get him back.

Last week, our soon-to-depart reporter, Grace, had us in fits of laughter when she deadpan out-punned him.

“Barry, do you know what logular means?”

She paused for effect.

“Or are you stumped?”

We all completely lost it.

That, my friends, is life in a newsroom.

Braised lamb shoulder chops with vinegar and green beans Serves 6 Ingredients 650g green beans, 450g for the braise and a further 200g for blanching 4 Tbsp Extra virgin olive oil 1.35kgs Lamb shoulder chops 50g Onions, chopped 2 Garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 Ground pepper 8 Tbsp Red wine vinegar

Serves 4

Ingredients 1 kg Pork belly 6 Tbsp Fish sauce 2 tsp Sesame oil 2 Tbsp Ginger, finely chopped 2 Garlic cloves, finely chopped 2 tsp Green chillies, chopped 150g Caster sugar 2 cups Water ½ cup Desiccated coconut 4 servings Asian greens 4 servings Rice 1 serving Coriander, to garnish Directions Cut the pork into cubes and place in a bowl. Pour over the fish sauce and sesame oil.

Add the ginger, garlic and chilli.

Grind over plenty of black pepper, then mix all together and leave to marinate in the fridge for at least one hour.

Preheat the oven to 160 deg C. Put the sugar and water into a large saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook until it turns a deep golden caramel. Add the pork and the coconut to the saucepan.

Transfer to a baking dish and cover with the lid. Cook for 2

hours, stirring occasionally. Add more water if the dish becomes dry.

Serve with greens either steamed or wilted in a little sesame oil, plenty of rice and coriander.

Directions Snap the ends off the beans, rinse, drain and set aside.

In a cast-iron enamel pot, add olive oil and brown the (seasoned) lamb chops at a medium-high temperature. Brown meat in batches thoroughly on all sides before removing. Avoid overcrowding the pot.

When the lamb is finished, put the onion and garlic in the pot and cook until they are pale gold.

Add salt and pepper then the vinegar.

Bring the vinegar to a brisk simmer for about 30 seconds while using a wooden spoon to de-glaze.

Turn the heat down, add beans then place the meat on top, along with extra salt and pepper. Cover and cook in oven at 160 deg C for about two and a half hours or until the meat is almost falling off the bone. Gently remove the chops to a tray to cool.

Sieve the beans, keeping the stock. Reduce the stock until it becomes almost sticky. Add red-wine vinegar for piquancy.

Chop stewed beans and mix with fresh, blanched butter beans and French beans.

Serve with buttery boiled potatoes and the fresh and chopped beans. Drizzle the chops with the reduced sauce and add a spoonful of minted salsa verde to the top of the lamb.

Aspire Canterbury Mobile Aspire Canterbury is a not-for-profit community-focused organisation committed to meeting the needs of older persons with mobility issues, disabled persons and their friends/ whanau. S

eeing the difference sport makes to young people keeps Justin Muschamp inspired in his role with the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation.

As a Canterbury disability sport adviser, he works with physically disabled young people everyday, helping them connect with sport and recreation opportunities.

Justin, who won bronze at the Sydney Paralympics, is a wheelchair rugby player with the NZ Wheel Blacks’ team and has worked for the foundation for 14 years.

The role enables him to connect his love of sport with helping people.

“I’ve seen many changes in disability sport over the years, but we still have to challenge boundaries to ensure more physically disabled New Zealanders can participate in sport and recreation,” Justin says.

The foundation was founded by Olympic legend Sir Murray Halberg in 1963. Sir Murray’s vision is to live in a society where everyone, regardless of ability, has an equal opportunity to participate in sport – an ethos Justin firmly believes in.

Five-year-old Emily O’Reilly from south Canterbury has certainly benefitted from a personalised swimming plan funded through the Activity Fund. Nerve damage from contracting Guillain Barres Syndrome at two years old has impacted Emily’s physical function and strength. A focus of Emily’s rehabilitation is strengthening her muscles and lungs; swimming was recommended to her family as an important activity. Emily’s mother, Anna, says her improvements through swimming have been amazing.

A highlight in his role is meeting new people and showing them what they can achieve, whether it’s joining a football team, having a go at sailing or aiming for the Paralympics. Recently, Justin ran the Flight Centre Foundation Halberg Surf Day at Sumner Beach, enabling physically disabled young people to take part in surfing and also longer-term surfing opportunities.

Justin has also been working with the council and SERA to ensure Christchurch sporting facilities are rebuilt to be accessible for physically disabled people. His ongoing work includes helping people to apply for Halberg AllSports Activity Fund grants for sports-related equipment, lessons and camps. Promoting No Exceptions Training in schools is another key part of his role.

In the lead-up to Anzac Day, Marilyn Wightman looks at honeywort’s arrival in New Zealand MANY PLANT seeds were brought to New Zealand by the early pioneers.

The seeds would either grow well in their new home with its different climate and landscape, or falter and not flourish. Seeds were easily packaged into letters and pioneers would also have sent requests back home for them, eagerly awaiting their arrival.

Flowers and vegetable seed sent out as gifts presented the opportunity for early New Zealand gardeners to write back home, telling of their delight in having received the seeds and of their success at growing them on the other side of the world.

A poignant story of such a plant arriving in New Zealand goes back to World War 1. As soldiers sent their letters home, they were known to include seeds of the ‘new’ plants they saw growing in the countries where they were stationed. This is how honeywort arrived in New Zealand.

Herb writer and publisher of numerous herb books, Gilian Painter relates how her aunt told her the story of honeywort seeds first arriving in New Zealand after 1915.

Blue-flowered honeywort is one of those delightful plants that rarely gets mentioned in glossy gardening books but is well worth growing. It certainly needs more publicity as it is an attractive annual (sometimes also regarded as a half-hardy annual, an evergreen perennial or a very hardy short-lived perennial).

It has pale green foliage which develops white spots as it matures.

The flowering stem emerges and elegantly curves over in a graceful nod. The large blue bracts open and the bell-like flowers dangle down.

Often overlooked, honeywort is an attractive annual.

HISTORY: Honeywort flourishes in winter. various shades of flower colour.

Gilian Painter remembers the purple-flowered variety C. major ‘Purpurascens’ growing in her parents’ garden. Kings Seeds list this honeywort in its catalogue under its other name: ‘Pride of Gibraltar’.

It is also known in New Zealand and overseas as ‘Kiwi Blue’ (or ‘Blue Kiwi’), which perhaps suggests this was the variety reported to have come back with soldiers from Gallipoli.

Honeywort flourishes in winter and by July is merrily flowering, which makes it a great attraction in the garden. Like many herbs, honeywort freely self seeds. The new shoots emerge in autumn and can cover an area of bare ground to provide a flowering display well into spring.

copious nectar at a time when flowering plants are sparse. An area that is in full or dappled shade is best for it. Reaching to about 50cm high, the plants release large black seeds that germinate the following autumn.

Yellow-flowered honeywort is also often available. Growing both the yellow and blue plants in the garden will see cross-pollination, resulting in a variety of new shades. In my garden there have been many shades from yellow to brown and differing purple hues.

The purple-flowered type seems hardier and stronger. The flowering stems are great for floral arranging as they last well when cut.

As the 100th anniversary of the Anzac landing on Gallipoli Peninsula looms, we should perhaps consider honeywort as an appropriate symbol to remember those who fought there.

My next door neighbour has a tree bearing the most magnificent large pink Camellia blooms. Small rounds, which I think may well be seed pods are landing in my backyard. Would it be feasible to plant these to see if I can germinate replicas of the parent tree?

What do you think my chances are if I dried out the pods, which are sealed completely, then break them open to expose and plant any seeds inside or should I just plant the whole pod in seed raising mix?

If you particularly like your neighbour’s flowering Camellia, the best approach is to take a flower to your nearest garden centre, where hopefully they will name the variety and be able to supply you with a new plant.

It is possible to grow them from seed, however, there is no guarantee that the new seedlings will in any way be identical to the parent plant. Therefore Camellias are always commercially grown from cuttings and in some instances are grafted.

By all means you can sow the seeds into Daltons Premium Seed Mix, however it will be 3-4 years before the first flowers appear. It is advisable to break up the fruit of the Camellia and sow the individual seeds. Good luck with your experiment!

STEP 1

Find an old tyre (talk to a local tyre merchant) and clean it well. Use chalk to mark two thirds of the way around the rim of the tyre. Imagine a clock in the middle and mark clockwise from 8 o’clock around to 4 o’clock. Use the serrated knife to cut along the line.

STEP 2

Make another line across the top of the tyre, where the hour hand would be at 1.30 (as shown).

STEP 3

Cut along the line with a hacksaw, then turn the tyre inside out to give better texture on what will be the feathers of your bird.

You now have two flaps of tyre. Use the handsaw to cut the longer of the two flaps into four even strips.

STEP 5

Cut the piece of timber into a beak shape. If you want a curved beak you may need to use a jigsaw. Sand the edges of the beak.

STEP 6

Take the timber beak and, by folding the short flap of tyre in half, sandwich it between the rubber. Use the drill to make a hole through both sides of the rubber flap and the beak.

STEP 7

Push the bolt through the hole and do the nut up on the other side. Tighten with a spanner.

This should hold the beak in place.

STEP 8

Decorate the tyre bird with acrylic paint (you may find it helpful to suspend the bird as you do this). Depending on the paint you use, you may need to use a primer undercoat.

Hyundai Sonata gets turbo power MY INTRODUCTION to Hyundai’s new Sonata was spectacular.

It was at Palmerston North’s Manfeild motorsport complex and I was seated next to Kiwi rally ace Hayden Paddon.

Paddon is serving his country proud in the World Rally Championship with consistent top-10 performances, he drives a Hyundai i20 rally car and is heavily supported by Hyundai New Zealand.

As a consequence, he was on hand at the Sonata launch event and was providing hot laps on the Manfeild circuit.

Well, when I say on the circuit, quite clearly Paddon likes the dirt, with all the traction and stability control systems switched off he was happy throwing the Sonata sideways, drifting and sliding into the infield and forcing the Sonata to do manoeuvres I’m sure it was never designed for.

But it accepted the challenge well, there was never a point where I thought complete control would be lost, and the car was none the worse for wear after its exploits.

The new Sonata lands here in three variants, and interestingly, a new turbocharged petrol engine makes an appearance, it sits alongside a 2.4-litre petrol engine which is available in two specification levels.

On the launch event I experienced both engines; however, the subject of this evaluation is the 2-litre turbo, and it is one of those new-age engines which effectively combines performance with economy.

Hyundai rates the twincamshaft, 16-valve unit with 180kW along with 350Nm of torque available all of the way from 1400rpm to 4000rpm, these figures combine to provide exceptional

CHRISTCHURCH CITY RURAL FIRE AREA INCLUDING BANKS PENINSULA Notice is hereby given that the prohibited fire season currently imposed by the Christchurch City Council over the rural fire area for which the Council is the Fire Authority is lifted from midnight Saturday, 18th April 2015 to be replaced by an OPEN FIRE SEASON. Fires may now be lit in the open air in rural areas without permit. Restrictions may be reimposed at a later date if weather conditions create a potentially dangerous fire situation.

All residents are requested to take care when lighting open fires. Before lighting fires in the open air, careful consideration must be given to weather conditions, adequacy of fire breaks, availability of water, and the patrolling of fires until completely out.

Fires are not to be left burning after dark.

UK rugby busy for Burleigh With the list of rugby players heading to Europe growing by the week, Andrew Voerman spoke to New Brighton’s Phil Burleigh, who moved to Edinburgh last year after stints with the Chiefs and the Highlanders, about what life is like in the northern hemisphere

PHIL BURLEIGH is approaching the end of a 15-month slog.

His rugby career in New Zealand finished (for now) on July 19 last year, when the Highlanders lost to the Sharks in a preliminary final in Durban, and his rugby career in Scotland began less than two months later on September 5, when he came on as a replacement for Edinburgh in their Pro12 season opener against Munster.

Seven months later, the European season still has a month left to run, and his new team are waging campaigns on two fronts.

The first is the Pro12 itself, a competition that is home to sides from Scotland, Italy, Ireland and Wales, where they are seeking a top-six finish, which will earn them a place in next year’s Champions Cup, contested by the best sides in European rugby; they currently sit in eighth, two points out of sixth, with three games left to play.

The second is the Challenge Cup, the second-tier European competition, where Edinburgh have a semi-final clash against the Newport Gwent Dragons tomorrow morning (NZT).

All told, Edinburgh will have 32 (or, if they win tomorrow, 33) games this season; the most a player in New Zealand could ever have is 31, and that would be spread out over an extra month, and require making the Super Rugby and ITM Cup finals.

Burleigh agrees that it’s been tough going, but seems to have come through it alright.

“I had a bit of an injury after 11 or 12 games and I was out for about 10 weeks, but only missed a hand-

ful of games, four or five maybe, but that sort of freshened me up again, otherwise it probably would have been a pretty long season for me, obviously going straight from Super Rugby into playing again, so that’s probably helped me, to be fair.”

Edinburgh is Scotland’s capital city, situated on its east coast, home to nearly 500,000 people, and famous for The Fringe arts festival, which is held every August.

Burleigh, 28, a centre and a product of New Brighton, arrived there in August last year with his partner Sarah and says he loves his new home and the changes it has meant for his lifestyle.

“I’m really, really happy I’ve made the choice to come here. It’s an awesome city and an easy place to get around and there’s always something happening, that’s for sure.

“Getting used to the apartment living is quite different. Getting around on public transport is pretty easy and sometimes probably a

better option. The weather’s been quite hard but I’m slowly getting used to it – it was similar to Dunedin in the winter time, it just lasts a bit longer, that’s all. You adapt pretty quickly.”

One of the reasons Burleigh made the move was the travel opportunities it affords him.

While the bulk of that will occur in the off-season, the European season has a few breaks sprinkled through it, allowing him to make a few trips, with Prague in the Czech Republic and Tenerife in Spain among the highlights so far.

Another reason was the money, with significantly more on offer in Edinburgh than at the Highlanders; he has a contract through to June next year and is understood to be making up to four times what he was in Super Rugby, where salaries begin at $70,000.

The pay disparity between New Zealand and Europe is a fact of life that has been hammered home in recent weeks, with plenty of All

Blacks declaring their intent to head offshore at the end of the current season; Colin Slade to Pau in France being the latest, in a deal believed to be worth more than $700,000.

“Obviously you can see a lot of people going overseas at the moment, (and money is) the main reason, I think, for a lot of guys leaving,” says Burleigh.

“In your career, once you get to 26, 27, you start to look to head overseas and I don’t think the guys can hide it too much – it’s definitely the reason for coming overseas.”

Then there’s the rugby itself, and Burleigh says the set-up at his new club is not too dissimilar to the one he was a part of in Dunedin.

“I guess it really depends on the coaches you have and how they structure a week. We’ve got a South African coach, Alan Solomons, and he’s a good coach. He likes having two days off after a game, no matter when it is, which I haven’t been used to in the past. If we have Sun-

day off, (it’s usually) back Monday, but we’d have Monday and Tuesday off.

“It’s just that initial phase, I guess, of getting use to a different style of rugby, which I’ve adapted to now, and I’m starting to enjoy the style of rugby they have – there’s a lot more kicking.”

There are five other New Zealanders at Edinburgh, including a couple Burleigh had played with in the past, as well as dozens of others spread around the Pro12 in both coaching and playing roles.

He said that while the familiar faces helped him settle in when he first arrived, the Kiwi lads don’t just keep to themselves.

“I guess it’s easy when you come over for a start. You sort of hang out with the New Zealand boys because you get a part of home, I guess, but we all hang out, all the Scottish boys too, we’re a tightknit group – some teams have their cliques but not with us, it’s all mixed together and we hang out quite a lot.”

One piece of Scottish rugby tradition Burleigh has become a part of is the 1872 Cup, contested by the country’s two professional clubs, Edinburgh and Glasgow, and named after the year where they met in the first ever inter-district rugby match. The cup is awarded to the team that has the higher point differential over the sides’ two round-robin meetings – this year that was Edinburgh, by the slim margin of two.

The derbies are a highlight of the club’s season, attracting their biggest crowds, and tending to be close-fought affairs, irrespective of the clubs’ form and records – Glasgow currently lead the Pro12, and had held the cup for the last few years before losing it to their rivals in January.

It’s a prize that Edinburgh could yet top, if they seize their opportunity tomorrow, and qualify for the club’s first-ever European final.

Burleigh is looking forward to the game, and says it will be up there as one of the biggest he’s ever played in.

“I think we’ll have a pretty decent crowd for this game. The boys are looking forward to it. We’d love to make the final and win the final – one step at a time though.”

Big pay or the All Blacks – a tough choice A STORY that caught my eye this week was the one about the generous chief executive in Seattle.

Dan Price, the founder of Gravity Payments, a credit card payment processing outfit, has taken a $930,000 pay cut, dropping from a salary of $1m to $70,000, in order to help raise the salaries of his 120 employees to the same level.

It stuck out, because it’s a course of action that is wildly out of sync with the rest of the modern world, where the overarching theme

seems to be to want more and more, faster and faster.

After he made the announcement, Mr Price was reported in the New York Times to have said: “I’m kind of freaking out.”

You can understand why – turn-

ing away those sums of money can’t be easy, as we’ve seen with the spate of rugby players announcing that they’re heading overseas at the end of the year.

And you can’t blame them for taking the money – their chosen career carries a lifespan much

shorter than most, so they need to make the most of their talents while they still have them.

It’s just a shame that we can be the world’s leading rugby nation, which we clearly are, yet our players head overseas in their droves because the money on offer is too good to turn down.

Some of the hysteria surrounding this current exodus, as it has come to be known, can be a bit dramatic.

The best 23 players in New Zealand, ie: the All Blacks, are always

going to be a competitive, if not dominant force in world rugby – it’s at Super Rugby, and ITM Cup, and club level where the impact will be felt the most.

Can we pay local players more money? Probably not.

Should players accept less than they’re worth and stay in New Zealand, following the lead of the selfless Mr Price?

I’m not sure we can ask them too, let alone demand it from them, but those that do, they should be saluted.

Crusaders seek consistency

ELEVEN WINS, five losses.

That’s the record the Crusaders have produced in each of the last four years, since Super Rugby took on its current three-conference, six-finalists format.

It seems that Todd Blackadder’s sides have a thing for consistency, because in his first two years in charge, while the competition was still the Super 14, his teams won eight, lost four and drew one.

Eleven wins is the mark that appears to guarantee a side a place in the finals – no team that has won that many has ever missed out on the playoffs, while teams that have finished 10-6 have done so three times (out of seven), teams that have finished 9-7 have done so three times (out of three), and 8-8 teams four times (out of five).

In order to reach that safe point, the Crusaders would have to go 7-1 across the second half of the

season. In the first half, they have shown glimpses which suggest such a run is within their grasp, but with trips to Wellington, Sydney, and Canberra still to come, you’d be brave to bet on it happening.

Coming off a game which Blackadder said was one of the most disappointing performances he has ever been involved with – the 20-25 loss to the Highlanders – a win tonight is sorely needed, but up against a Chiefs side that has

won three of their last four meetings with the Crusaders, he knows it will be tough.

“They’re talking up a big game this week and it’s a big game for us.

They’re always epic battles.”

The Canterbury Rams’ National Basketball League season continues with a round four clash against the Manawatu Jets at Cowles Stadium at 7pm tomorrow. The two teams met at the same venue in round one, with the Rams emerging victorious, 114-98.

Taufua wants that good feeling

By Andrew Voerman HALFWAY through the season, the Crusaders lie in eighth, with four wins and four losses to their name.

But it’s not hard to imagine a scenario where, with a ref ’s call here, and a bounce of the ball there, they’re instead sitting pretty at 7-1.

The “1” in that scenario would be the 16-40 loss to the Chiefs back on February 28, the only game where they haven’t been anywhere near competitive, an ignominy Jordan Taufua remembers vividly.

“Getting 40 points put on you is not a good feeling. They were hungrier, they wanted it more, they were more energised than us.

We could see it. We’ve put teams under the pump as well, so we could see it both ways, how they were feeling, and how we were feeling as well.”

The Crusaders flanker has been one of the team’s standout performers so far this campaign; the Chiefs game was his first start this season, but he hasn’t been left out of the run-on squad since.

The two teams meet again tonight at AMI Stadium and Taufua said not giving the visitors the chance to hurt them would be crucial, especially after it was only

There were times when we didn’t play well in the game, but it’s an 80 minute game and there were just a couple of times when we lapsed and they pounced on it.

“The Chiefs are a good enough team to counter and jump on our mistakes.”

It should be no surprise that Taufua is an attacking talent – he

was a second-five as a youngster, first playing in the loose forwards as a fill-in at age 13, but it’s a position that he’s excelled at since, first as a No 8, and lately as a blindside flanker.

He said it doesn’t matter where he plays.

“I just enjoy my footy, ay. I’m just trying to do my best to stay in there and get quality game time.”

His rugby education came at Sacred Heart College in Auckland, where he was the roommate of Siate Tokolahi, a former Canter-

bury teammate who is now with the Chiefs, and on their bench as a back-up prop tonight.

“It will be good to see him,” said Taufua.

“We always catch up and stuff like that.”

After three seasons with Canterbury, Taufua moved north to Pukekohe to play for Counties Manukau in last year’s ITM Cup. There, he came under the wing of coach Tana Umaga, and he says he enjoyed being part of a team that took a free-for-all approach to

playing rugby, particularly when compared to the structured game plans employed down south.

“It’s a different game and it keeps you fresh and honest.”

There might even be more new environments to come.

Several Super Rugby players are expected to be in the mix for the All Blacks Sevens team’s Olympics campaign next year, and with senior All Blacks such as Aaron Cruden and Kieran Read declaring this week that it isn’t their plans, someone like Taufua – young, energetic, and a ferocious ball-carrier – might sense an opportunity.

He says he’s never spoken to sevens coach Gordon Tietjens, but can definitely see the allure in the a trip to Rio. “If he did give me a bell, I’d definitely think about it.”

For now, it’s tonight, the Chiefs, his old roommate, and getting the Crusaders’ stop-start campaign moving forward again.
