New site for freedom campers BY KYLE KNOWLES The northern ramp car park in New Brighton has been set up to accomodate freedom campers. The city council is allowing the controversial campers onto the ramp after moving them on from their most recent camp at Waimari beach car park. This is the third move for the
campers after the issue became public when neighbours clashed with them while they were camping at a Beresford St car park in central New Brighton. The city council has decided to leave gates open on the ramp overnight But, the ramp site has angered people living across the road. Eric Banks, a Marine Pde resident, made a deputation at the city
council meeting last week outlining his concerns with moving the campers there and wanted a permanent solution found. He told councillors that residents were not consulted and he was not pleased they had been moved to yet another car park. “We are in full view of the campers.
