World War 1 soldiers honoured

Firearms found in drug bust BY TOM DOUDNEY Firearms were recovered from two Waddington addresses searched last week as part of a police methamphetamine bust. A 38-year-old man who had been living at one of the addresses for only a few weeks was one of three people arrested in connection with the operation, which also saw searches carried out on three addresses in Christchurch and one in Kaiapoi. A car, associated with the Waddington addresses, was stopped and searched in Mairehau. Officers recovered four sawn-off shotguns, two from the Wadding-
ton addresses, as well as ammunition, methamphetamine and cash. All three suspects appeared in court on Friday with the Waddington man appearing again on Saturday. The Waddington man, charged with unlawful possession of firearms and possession of equipment with intent to manufacture methamphetamine, was remanded in custody and will appear in court again on Thursday. Another 38-year-old man, from Kaiapoi, charged with firearms possession, was remanded to appear on March 23. The third, a 22-year-old Kaiapoi
woman, had been arrested for failing to attend a previous court appearance for driving charges. She pleaded guilty to those charges. The search warrants resulted from ongoing investigations to disrupt the supply of methamphetamine in Canterbury. Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Greg Cottam, of the Organised Crime Unit, said the recovery of the shotguns was disturbing and illustrated the dangers associated with methamphetamine dealing. “Our aim is to prevent the destructive and social harm caused by drugs and in particular methamphetamine dealing,” he said.
Selwyn soldiers who gave their lives fighting in World War 1 are commemorated in a new project initiated by Selwyn Libraries. In order to honour those men, the library has identified, researched and documented every soldier whose name was recorded on a World War 1 Memorial in the district. The Selwyn Times is today starting a new weekly series, Soldiers of Selwyn, profiling those men. Digital services librarian Christine Grant said the project had been undertaken to bring the ongoing World War 1 centenary commemorations to the local level. “I think the more you learn about the soldiers the more you realise that these were ordinary young men who had lives and loves just like we do, but who lost those lives, often far from home and in appalling conditions,” she said. “The aim . . . has been to bring these young soldiers to life by recording not only their military data such as rank and the company they belonged to, but also the personal and anecdotal things we could find about them: What they looked like, what their jobs were, sometimes this included little insights such as they were the best player at their local cricket club or they were a keen local rugby supporter.” •Turn to page 2
