Dalziel forced to sell say Labour MPs

been forced to support the sale of $751 million of city assets because of pressure from the Government.

That’s the claim from Christchurch’s Labour MPs who say Ms Dalziel would not have supported the sale without “continual pressure from Government.”

Wigram MP Megan Woods said selling the assets made no economic sense, but the cost-sharing agreement made it very difficult for the city council to balance its books.

Ms Dalziel is a former Labour MP. Said Dr Woods: “The Government needs to go back and renegotiate the cost-sharing agreement with the city council, otherwise it will be financially crippled. We are putting the future of our city at risk.”

Port Hills MP Ruth Dyson agreed.

“It was irresponsible for council to sign up with ratepayers money to something they had no idea of the cost of, and it was wrong for government to force them to do that,” she said.

LONG EYELASHES are seen as being beautiful.

But your eyelashes can be too long, for your eyes’ health at least.

If your eyelashes are too long they can make your eye dry out, scientists have found. Having long thick lashes creates a miniature wind tunnel, pushing more air towards the surface of you eye and drying it out.

Researchers at the Georgia Institute of Technology tested out the theory by making a fake eye and blowing wind and dust at it. They put the fake eye at the end of a wind tunnel, gave it different lengths of eyelash, and then funnelled air at it, testing the moisture and dust on the surface of the eye.

“This is why long, elegant, fake eyelashes aren’t ideal,” said Guillermo Amador one of the researchers. “They may look good, but they’re not the best thing for the health of your eyes.”

Facebook link in sex attack A 14-YEAR-OLD girl was allegedly raped and blackmailed by a man who contacted her through Facebook.

Karl Sheridan Salmon, 20, allegedly met his 14-year-old victim online, raped her and used footage of the ordeal to blackmail her. He was trying to organise to see her again, Detective Sergeant Rex Barnett said.

Salmon was arrested at his home in Waikuku, on Wednesday night and appeared in the district court yesterday charged with blackmail, two counts of threatening to kill,

two counts of unlawful sexual connection with a female aged 12-16 and two counts of rape of a female aged 12-16.

He has been remanded in custody to reappear in the district court on May 4.

Police are urging anyone who has information on the investigation, or has found themselves in a similar situation, to report it to police on 363 7400. Information can also be provided anonymously by phoning Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Student tells of undie thief

By Emma-Jane McLennan COVERT SURVEILLANCE cameras may have led to the arrest of a 16-year-old charged with seven counts of burglary, including stealing women’s underwear.

Canterbury University student Flory Park, 22, is one of a group of women whose underwear was stolen in a series of “weird” burglaries.

She said about five weeks ago her flat was broken into, her flatmate’s car keys taken and a passport stolen from the vehicle.

The offender then put the car keys back inside.

A week later all of her underwear was taken from the clothesline and a bottle of lubricant left under her window, she said.

At first, Miss Park’s flatmates, four other female students, thought it was a prank.

“Then we thought – no. Nobody we know would think that’s funny,” she said.

Miss Park understood police had set up hidden cameras to catch the culprit. Police yesterday would not discuss the matter with The Star.

A 16-year-old has appeared in the Youth Court.

Miss Park alleged that the thief later took cigarette butts from an ashtray at the Upper Riccarton flat.

“It seems as if he was watching us for quite some time. He obviously knew it was an all-girl flat and was taking note of our patterns, like when we were sleeping,

A friend of Miss Park, who lives on the street, said her handbag had been stolen: “She told me someone took the handbag, left the laptop that was sitting right next to it, then left the contents of the handbag lying all over the garden. It’s like he was looking for something,” Miss Park said.

Miss Park said it was a relief when the teen was arrested: “We weren’t sleeping well. We were so fed up we were considering putting GoPros up to catch him.”

His young age was a concern for Miss Park: “Now I know he’s just a young boy, I worry about what he’ll do as he grows up. He obviously has some kind of sick fetish.”

POLICE ARE appealing for information after a 43-year-old man was found semi-conscious, with unexplained head injuries, in the early hours of yesterday morning.

A member of the public phoned 111 to report an incident at about 2am yesterday morning.

Emergency services found the injured man at Momorangi Reserve, Redwood, and took him to hospital, Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Michael Ford said.

“He remains in the Christchurch Hospital intensive care unit

in a critical condition.”

The injured man is described as 1.74m tall, of a medium build, with short dark hair. He was wearing dark coloured trousers and a T-shirt.

Police have not been able to speak to the man and it is unclear how he sustained the injuries.

Anyone who saw a man of his description at the reserve around 1.30-2am yesterday is encouraged to phone police on 363 7400.

Information can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers by phoning 0800 555 111.

Japanese student bashed

A JAPANESE teenager was allegedly racially abused and attacked in North New Brighton on Tuesday night.

He was taken to hospital with injuries to his face and chest as well as a concussion.

The teenager was allegedly verbally abused at the Bower Ave BP before the attackers followed him in a car where he was physically assaulted on Travis Rd near the

QE II roundabout.

He went into the petrol station with three friends after a sports practice when the racial slur happened before the attack minutes after.

A member of the public stopped to help the teenager when he was being attacked.

The security cameras at the BP were not working but a source said police were close to making an arrest.

CHEEKY CAMPER: A string of freedom camping complaints in New Brighton appears to have taken a lighter note this week after a camper parked directly outside the police station and hung clothes out to dry. A photo was taken by a passing resident on Sunday, and posted to the Peoples Independent Republic of New Brighton Facebook page on Wednesday. “Very funny,” someone commented. “That is next level cheeky!” wrote another. New Brighton police Sergeant Dave Robinson said the incident was not an issue: “We had no complaints.” ​

He said he will offer a fixed price to the people who had the bat on their watchlist.

But I want to get a copy of the documentary because we have a little museum for Erica in my hometown (in the Philippines) and it has all her things in it, I think the documentary would be good for that.”

Budget blowout splits council

DIVIDED: City councillors were split over a plan to increase rates and sell assets.

But independent councillor Jamie Gough said the People’s Choice councillors had months to raise their concerns in planning meetings.

“Doing anything at this point other than making a decision is just politicking, and I think it is the last thing our city needs right now.”

He said the aim of the decision was to present the public with practical solutions to the city council financial problems.

A DECISION yesterday to raise rates and sell city assets split the city council into two factions.

Councillors were split over the draft financial plan, which outlines what will be done over the next decade to manage the predicted $1.2 billion budget shortfall.

It included plans to increase rates by 7.5 per cent to 8.75 per cent over each of the next four years and to sell $750 million in assets, $200 million more than was planned.

The six Labour-aligned People’s Choice councillors voted against the plan, and it was passed by only two votes.

People’s Choice spokesman Cr Andrew Turner said the city council should be looking at deferring or dropping some of its projects before it looked at further asset sales.

Some of the councillors agreed in December to look at selling $551 million in assets, but they were not prepared to go further than that, he said.

“I advocate reducing the size of the shopping list. Some projects can be deferred or don’t need to be done at all,” he said.

Fellow People’s Choice Yani Johanson said the debate should centre around where the city council was putting its money, not sale of assets.

“It makes no sense to sell the things that make money to build things that lose money. I think long term that will be a disaster for the city.”

The options looked at in the draft financial plan will be put forward for public consultation before they are made final.

Mayor Lianne Dalziel said it was not possible to make the changes the People’s Choice councillors asked for.

City council financial spokesman Raf Manji said that the city council would be out of business if it did not make a decision yesterday.

‘Meltdown’ follows house fire

By Emma-Jane McLennan and Gabrielle Stuart A PREGNANT woman who crashed into cars during a high speed chase last month had her house severely damaged in a suspected arson two days before, it can be revealed.

The 33-year-old mother of two is still in Christchurch Hospital recovering from serious injuries from the chase which neighbours say was bizarre and out of character.

Police said yesterday she is likely to face driving charges.

On February 8, police received numerous calls from Hornby residents about the woman’s erratic driving. She had also clipped other vehicles.

When police arrived at the scene the woman fled in her vehicle, and they pursued her.

Police abandoned the chase. They then tracked her and the pursuit restarted, which police were forced to abandon again.

About five minutes later she crashed in Centaurus Rd, St Martins.

A neighbour of the woman, Nicola Dean, told The Star: “I honestly swear it’s the truth, she’s a good mother and a good person and I don’t know the reason behind her meltdown or breakdown but she’s had a really hard time lately.”

The woman’s house was severely damaged by fire on February 6, which is being treated as arson.

It had also been damaged in a grass fire two days earlier.

I have only been a couple of times but it was gorgeous. As for restaurants – my favourite is my place. I’ve only been here a few months so I haven’t had time to discover many of them.

What are you reading at the moment?

Nothing at the moment – it’s lead in time to the first game, so all my focus at the moment is on pre-season prep.

Do you have a favourite movie or TV series?

I have really enjoyed Stalker, which sounds a bit funny but I really like it, and I also like the show which comes after it, Forever, about a man who doesn’t

die. So Monday nights, when I get back from training, is my night for good TV. What would your perfect weekend in Christchurch look like?

It would probably be in Akaroa, staying the night at a hotel there with plenty of wine, plenty of food and plenty of laughter – and not by myself of course.

What’s your worst weekend habit?

Not getting up. The weekend at the moment is precious time because we’re on the road so much, so spending as much quality time as I can in the house is good.

Plan to repair Sumner Rd

PREPARATIONS ARE getting under way to repair the earthquakedamaged Evans Pass section of Sumner Rd and re-open the vital link between Lyttelton and the Summit Rd. Work could start later this year, with a planned re-opening for late 2017 or early 2018.

A NZ Transport Agency, city council and Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority governance group this week agreed on a scope of works and allocated funding to allow the project to get under way.

The governance group is responsible for co-ordinating the rebuild

of earthquake-damaged city council infrastructure. The majority of funds for this project are coming from NZ Transport Agency.

“This is an important road for the community, the region’s resilience and the transport of specialised freight,” said the director of city council facilities and infrastructure David Adamson.

The 2.6km road is an alternative route in emergencies and for port vehicles unable to use the Lyttelton Tunnel.

“Reducing geotechnical hazards and reinstating the road and retaining walls along the pass is complex and costly,” said Mr Adamson.

The New Zealand Transport Agency’s group manager of planning and investment, Dave Brash, says other alternatives have been looked at.

“We’ve considered an upgrade of Dyers Pass or Gebbies Pass and creating a new road from Heathcote Valley to Cass Bay. “But, while we appreciate the thoroughness of the council’s investigation, we have decided to support reinstating the current road as the most cost-effective solution to address the access needs for Christchurch and Lyttelton.”

CERA deputy chief executive implementation Warwick Isaacs says

the repair and re-opening of this section of Sumner Rd is a great outcome given it is such an important transport link for the community and the wider economy.

“While other options have been considered, this solution is the most effective for achieving a fully functioning infrastructure network. Residents and businesses have seen the road as being significant to their recovery, and it’s great to see it will be back in action.”

The project includes the removal of unsafe rock above the road and a reshape of the land to reduce the risk of rockfall onto the road below.

Warwick Isaacs Our People Farewell to rebuild chief Warwrick Isaacs has been a key figure in the rebuild of the city in his roles with the Canterbury Earthquake Recovery Authority and Christchurch Central Development Unit. He is leaving to take up a new job as chief executive of Stonewood Homes.

He talks to reporter Gabrielle Stuart What are you going to miss most about the job?

No one has asked me that question, so I haven’t thought about it. The biggest thing I will miss is quite clearly the people I have worked with, because you form quite a close bond. Not only staff and colleagues, but people I have come across in the public sector and through the rebuild.

Do you think you will stop by the office at all after you’ve left?

My new job is still based in Christchurch, so I won’t be going far. But probably not, because whoever has my job won’t want me hanging around and getting in the way.

What has been the best day on the job?

The launch of central city blueprint in 2012, because that was culmination of 100 days of really hard work by really fantastic people. That was definitely the biggest day. It was a nervous day as well because of what people were going

You’ve said you’re a very private person. What has it been like to be the public face of a very public job?

I think it’s just been part of the job really. I wasn’t the one to spend a lot of time in the media or in front of cameras in my old jobs, so I had a couple of people in the early days who helped me learn to talk in front of cameras, and talk to people like you. It’s been a real privilege to do it, and I hope I have done a good job.

I’ve asked you about the best day. What was the worst day

on the job?

I couldn’t say I’ve had a worst day, actually.

Your biggest challenge, then?

There have been two things.

I have talked about some of the heritage decisions which had to be made. They were a real challenge.

And with the CCDU in particular, a big challenge was trying to convince everyone that the doughnut central city myth wasn’t going to come to pass, particularly in the last year.

At the beginning everyone seemed to be very positive about the blueprint, but as time has gone on, the media and the public seem to have become very disillusioned with it. Why do you think that is?

Part of it is because it is two and a half years since the blueprint was launched, and people’s expectations about how quick some of the things would come to pass were misaligned with how long it does take to come to pass, even with the combined force of Government and the city council behind it.

Obviously you came into the job quite new to the city – what have you learnt about Christchurch during your time here?

If a city is the people, I have learnt how resilient people are.

People have had to deal with a lot but in spite of the hardships, people have been incredibly tolerant and caring for each other. That’s my observation.

What’s your favourite place in Christchurch?

I have had a lot of meals at the Running Bull on Riccarton Rd, because that was one of the few places open in the early days. I enjoy going into Cathedral Square.

I remember in the first thick snow we had, there was no one there, and it was quite a peaceful place. I remember that. At demolition sites

I enjoy going back now and seeing the progress that has been made.

You’ve worked across quite a range of roles within CERA – tell me about them?

I carried on with Civil Defence work within the cordon, and my first job title was quite a mouthful – I’ll just grab my card. I was interim manager, Civil Defence transition and all residual deconstruction. That’s quite a mouthful, isn’t it? In early 2012, I also picked up the job as director of the CCDU, and in late 2013, I picked up the role of deputy chief executive, and that was when I got the responsibility over the Crown investment in the rebuild.

It’s only now that we’re starting to see the fruit of some of that work, and there’s a lot more left to do – how frustrating is it to leave without being able to see the job finished?

It’s not so much frustrating, because it really is my choice to move on. On the demolition side that is largely true, and with the horizontal infrastructure there is still a long way to go. But we’ve passed half way. And I am sitting here as we’re talking, looking out of the window at cranes on both public and private sector land, so I am seeing the fruits of my labour.

Why leave now?

I think the end is not certain yet. But for me it was four years on, and as we have touched this point in the three big things I am responsible for, it was a good time for me to move on. I fully expect the momentum to carry on, and that was a big thing for me. I didn’t want to go away and have the whole thing fall down because I was not there, but I think we’re past that now. The job at Stonewood is a great opportunity for me, as well.

Several people, most recently

Ruth Dyson, have criticised the handling of the CERA winddown, saying staff are seeing the writing on the wall and having to look for other work. How are staff feeling about the coming closure, and do you think it could have been handled better?

When everyone signed up for work at CERA they knew the legislation would end, and they have willingly put their shoulders to the wheel. In the area I look after, I think the way these things are being handled at the moment is more than fine. John Ombler is a great hand on the tiller for CERA as well, so with his leadership and Brownlee’s I don’t think there will be a whole lot of people jumping the ship at CERA. If you get 10 minutes downtime in the office – what would we be most likely to find you doing?

Walking around talking to the staff, finding out what is going on.

Just talking to people.

What about at home? If you get a free half hour, what would you be doing?

Well, I collect stamps, and I collect plastic models of cars and planes. And I like working on real cars too, not just model ones.

Tell me a bit about your family?

I couldn’t have done this without them. My wife, Kaye, has always been a strong person behind me. I actually dropped my son at Otago University the week before the February quake, and my oldest daughter stayed in Timaru, so it’s just Gabrielle and Kaye here now.

Do you expect to be able to spend more time with your family in the new job?

I’m not sure yet. When you go to a new job you need to really immerse yourself. So time will tell on that one.

Do you have career or life goals you still want to fulfil?

That’s a difficult question. As I move forward, that I’m always prepared to learn more. As far as career goals go I have never really looked too far into the future. I put the effort into the job I do, and take opportunities as they come.

Have you had any discussions about who will take on the role after you leave?

That question is one for John Ombler, because he will be the one appointing my replacement.

If you had one piece of advice to give to the person who will replace you, what would it be?

Work hard and get on well with people. Relationships are a big part of my job, so create some strong relationships.

What are you most proud of during your time with CERA? I am proud of the team I have, not just today, but the teams I have been responsible for right from day one. The teams of engineers going through damaged buildings, and the blueprint team, right through to the team I am working with today.

COMMERCIAL PROPERTY AND WESTERN PACIFIC INSURANCE Liability of Insurance broker(s) We have been approached recently by owners of commercial property who were quite happily insured with companies like IAG until their broker recommended they change their insurer to Queenstown-based Western Pacific Insurance Limited.

Western Pacific went into liquidation in April 2011 after being inundated with Christchurch earthquake claims.

The directors of Western Insurance aggressively chased market share by offering heavily discounted premiums and paying brokers commissions of up to 25%. After the September 2010 and February 2011 earthquakes struck, Western Pacific simply did not have the funds to meet their insurance obligations to property owners.

One of the directors of Western Pacific had been blacklisted in Australia from dealing in insurance products before he became a director of the company. Insurance brokers have a general duty to act in the best interests of their clients, and should not recommend poor quality insurance products or insurers that are of questionable financial stability.

It is possible that brokers who recommended that their clients change insurers to Western Pacific have acted in breach of their duties by failing to perform due diligence on the company.

If you own commercial property and were insured with Western Pacific and have been left without any insurance cover because of the failure of Western Pacific, you might have a claim against your broker.

You generally have 6 years in which to file legal proceedings against a negligent broker.

The 6 years starts to run from when you suffer damage.

At the earliest that could be when the broker placed the cover with an insurer that was unable to meet claims. So if you have a concern about the issue you need to act quickly before it is too late.

A LOOK INSIDE . . . THE CENTRAL CITY Walking around inside the four avenues, four years on from the February 22 earthquake, you see a city full of contrasts.

There are plenty of construction sites, proof that the rebuild is under way, never mind how sluggish it appears to be. Then there are the sites already up and running, or that never stopped running in the first place. The congregation of bars around Victoria St, the ingenuity of Re:Start mall; the oversubscribed eateries at Strange’s Lane; the cafes that dot New Regent St; there are little areas popping up all over the place, still separated by large plots of vacant land.

n March 2015, the Canterbury Workers’ Educational Association (WEA) is celebrating 100 years of providing affordable, accessible community education in Canterbury.

There’s something for everyone in the events that have been planned.

Find out more about the pioneering work done by the WEA over the past 100 years at an illustrated talk given by historian Ian Dougherty. The People’s University is the book Ian has written about the Canterbury WEA, and he’ll be presenting his talk on Thursday, March 5. Everyone is welcome to this free seminar where you’ll hear about the WEA’s difficult early years during the First World War, its summer schools, distance education and travelling library schemes; its Wider Horizons programme and some of the personalities who have worked for the WEA over the years.

A shared lunch on Friday, March 6, is an opportunity to meet people involved in the WEA’s clubs and north west branch, and find out more about the range of activities at the WEA. A dinner at Hagley Community College on Saturday, March 7, is the final event for the week where former mayor Garry Moore is the after-dinner speaker. Contact the WEA if you’d like to attend.

Pork fillet with peach stuffing Serves 4 This fruity stuffing adds a taste of summer to a simple pork fillet. You could also use ripe apricots, plums and nectarines.

Ingredients

40g Butter 1 Onion, small, diced 2 Pork steaks / fillets 1 clove Crushed garlic 1 tsp Fresh ginger, grated 4 Peaches, ripe, 2 diced, 2 cut into quarters 1 Thyme leaves, fresh, plus extra for garnish 1 to taste Salt & freshly ground pepper 1 Tbsp Brown sugar ¼ cup White wine, or water

Directions Preheat the oven to 180 deg C and line a shallow roasting dish with baking paper.

Trim the pork fillets of any fat or sinew and make a long cut down the centre of each fillet to make a cavity for the stuffing.

Mozzarella and pesto schnitzel parcels

A rich and easy way to spice up your schnitzel.

Ingredients 1 Salt & freshly ground pepper, to season 8 slices Beef schnitzel 250g Mozzarella cheese, sliced ¼ cup Basil pesto 1 Tbsp Olive oil Directions

Heat the butter in a frying pan and saute the onion, garlic and ginger for 3-4 minutes over a low heat until softened and lightly coloured.

Add the two diced peaches and the fresh thyme leaves, and cook for a further 2 minutes.

Remove from the heat and stir in breadcrumbs to make a stuffing. Season well.

Spoon the stuffing mixture into the pork cavities. Secure with string in several places to shape into a neat log.

Place the stuffed fillets on the lined tray and arrange the peach halves around them.

Mix the brown sugar with the wine, and spoon over the peaches and fillets.

Roast for 20-30 minutes, depending on the size and thickness of the fillets.

When pierced with a skewer in the thickest part of the meat, the juices should be just pink and the peach quarters should be golden and soft.

Remove from the oven and loosely cover the fillets with foil to rest for 5-8 minutes before slicing.

Serve the pork slices with the caramelised peaches and new potatoes with summer greens.

Season schnitzel all over with salt and pepper and lay on a work surface. Arrange two slices of mozzarella on one half of each schnitzel and top each with a heaped teaspoon of pesto.

Fold the empty side of each schnitzel over to cover the filling and secure by threading two toothpicks through each schnitzel parcel.

Heat a non-stick frying pan, add a film of oil and place schnitzel parcels in the pan. Cook over a medium heat for 2 to 3 minutes on each side, or until browned on both sides and cheese has melted.

Janet Wade tells us all about this nutritious, easy-to-grow root vegetable I WOULD never have thought of the purplish brown roots of beetroot as a symbol of love, but, in the past, beetroot has been depicted on Valentine’s Day cards.

In ancient Rome, beetroot was used as an aphrodisiac, and some cultures still believe if a man and woman eat from the same beetroot, they will fall in love.

These theories are not as crazy as they seem, as, on top of a high sugar content, beetroot is high in boron (increases libido), contains betaine (relaxes the mind), and also tryptophan – the same mood-lifting chemical found in chocolate.

Beets also offer high levels of potassium, manganese, phosphorus, iron, vitamins A and C, folic acid and fibre, and are packed with so-called cancerpreventing and heart-protecting antioxidants.

It’s not only the root that is edible. The leaves can be cooked or served in salads in the same way as spinach. They regrow after harvesting, as long as you are

careful not to damage growing tips in the process.

Beetroot can be grown all year round, but some varieties suit different seasons better than others, so check the information on the seed packet. ‘Crosbys Egyptian Flat’, for example, tolerates summer temperatures, but is not frost tolerant.

Think beetroot, think red, is no longer the case. A combination of heirloom and new varieties offer a whole range of colours: ‘Chioggia’ is red on the outside, with rings of red and white on the inside; ‘Albino’, as the name suggests, is a white variety; and ‘Golden Detroit’ has an orange skin, with flesh that turns deep yellow when it is cooked. These have the advantage of not bleeding like the red varieties.

Beetroot prefers to be planted in full sun, but will tolerate part shade. A deep, well-worked, well-drained soil, free of rocks or lumps, is best. If you intend to grow your crop in pots, ensure the pots are at least 20cm deep.

Gardening Guide Bulbs For a truly wonderful scene of lovely spring bulbs; nodding daffodils, fragrant hyacinths, petite crocus, the time to plant is now. Our garden centres are chock-full of plump bulbs just waiting to explode in a riot of spring colour and fragrance. A garden that contains a good selection of different bulbs is assured of colour from late winter until summer.

When planting bulbs in the garden they require a well-drained, sandy loam which is not overly rich. You can improve heavy soils by adding coarse sand or Oderings Compost.

Tui Bulb Fertiliser should be incorporated into the soil during preparation and prior to planting (always avoid direct contact between the bulb and fertiliser or fresh manure). The bulbs will also respond well to a feed with a liquid fertiliser as flower buds start to appear and again after flowers have finished.

With all bulbs, always allow the bulbs to die down naturally as this helps put energy back into the bulb. Once the foliage has completely flopped and is dying off then you may remove it. You can either leave the bulbs in the soil undisturbed until next season or you can lift them and store them in a dry, darkish place like the garage.

freesias can be moved inside as they start to flower. The containers need to be at least 15cm deep to allow for good root growth and potted using a bulb potting mix. Plant your bulbs to their required depth and two times closer to each other than what you would in the garden. Keep your containers in a cool shady place until the leaves emerge, then move into a sunny area. To promote earlier flowering on tall strong stems, place the hyacinths, anemone and ranunculus into the fridge (7-10 degrees) for three to four weeks before planting.

The plants prefer an alkaline soil, so apply lime prior to planting. While sheep pellets, well-aged compost or animal manure is suitable to enrich the soil, avoid using fresh manure because this will result in bitter, deformed roots. An application of blood and bone around two weeks before planting can boost the early growth, but don’t apply any high-nitrogen fertilisers after that, unless you are growing your crop specifically for leaves.

Soak seed overnight to increase germination rate. Plant at a depth of around three times its diameter, 10cm apart, in rows spaced 25-40cm away from each other (depending on the variety).

If the crop is being grown only for salad leaves, sow seed more densely.

Even though seed is large enough to be handled and spaced evenly, more than one seedling sprouts from each seed, so plants still need to be thinned once about 5cm high. Unlike other root vegetables, beetroot tolerates transplantation, providing seedlings are small, are kept moist, and are handled carefully.

Aim to keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing period because, while plants are reasonably drought tolerant once established, long dry periods can cause them to bolt to seed. The roots will then become tough and crack once they are watered again.

You can begin to harvest beetroot when they reach around 2.5cm in diameter.

Harvesting every second plant gives the remaining plants room to grow larger.

Roots above a diameter of 10cm or so become tough, but can still be pickled or made into chutney.

Traditionally, the only way beetroot was served was pickled. While no Kiwi hamburger would be complete without slices of pickled beetroot, beetroot’s uses have become much more varied. It can be made into hot winter soups, cold summer soups, grated raw into salads, roasted, microwaved, and even combined with chocolate to make a cake.

STEP 1

Take two measurements. The first is the shortest inside distance between your two gate posts.

Measure at the top and bottom of the posts, as gate posts are not always parallel, and note the smallest of these distances, which we’ll call “measurement A”. Decide how tall you would like your gate to be and note this down. We’ll call this “measurement B”.

STEP 2

Cut four relatively straight manuka poles, each about 4cm in diameter, to form your gate frame.

Two poles should be the length of measurement A less 10cm (these are the top and bottom horizontal rails of the gate), the other two should be the length of measurement B (these are the vertical side rails of the gate).

Working two rails at a time, use a saw to notch one pair of ends as shown. The notches should be about 1.5cm deep and about 4cm long.

Place one notched end against the other, and drill through both.

STEP 5

Bolt the two notched rails together. Repeat steps 3 and 4 to form the gate frame. Note: your aim is to create a frame that lies as flat to the ground as possible.

Cut several manuka poles, each about 2cm in diameter and 15cm longer than measurement B. These are the pickets that will fill the gate frame.

To create a decorative pattern, try making some of the central pickets longer than the outer ones.

Lay the pickets, evenly spaced, over the frame.

STEP 7

Drill a hole through the ends of the pickets where they overlap the frame (but don’t drill into the frame itself). Screw the pickets onto the frame.

STEP 8

Cut a manuka pole, about 4cm in diameter, and long enough to wedge firmly on a diagonal between an upper and lower corner of the gate without distorting the frame.

STEP 9

Drill through this diagonal bracing, and screw through it into several of the pickets.

STEP 10

Ask a friend to hold the gate against the gate posts as you screw the hinges into place.

STEP 11

Fashion a latch from No. 8 wire and staple it onto the opening side of the gate post.

I used a small, clean, washing powder scoop to fill my pot with seed-raising mix. Press the mix down so it sits 1.5cm below the rim of the pot. Your pot is only tiny so put two pinches of seed into the palm of your hand. Use the thumb and finger of your other hand to gently scatter the seed onto the surface of the seed-raising mix. Check the back of your seed packet to see if the seed needs to be covered or not.

I hope you are all enjoying summer and eating lots of salad. This little garden project can be as long or as short as you like, depending on how quickly you can collect some empty yoghurt pots and the size of your kitchen windowsill. I used microgreen seeds from Kings (Pea ‘Fiji Feathers’, cress, mustard), Yates (amaranth ‘Red Garnets’, cabbage ‘Rubies’, mizuna ‘Red Gems’) and dried blue peas from an organic shop. You could also use leftover packets of lettuce, radish, rocket and basil seeds from your salad garden. Check out your local library for books about growing microgreens for more tasty seed ideas.

CREATE A CATERPILLAR GARDEN

Measure the height of the yoghurt pot and cut a length of coloured paper or card to wrap around the pot. Stick down the end (I used double-sided tape). Next, cut out one small boot shape for each pot. Stick that onto the side of the pot, making sure each boot faces the same way.

We don’t want to confuse the caterpillar! These will form the legs and body.

Wrap the paper around the pot.

Stick down the coloured paper.

Use a spray bottle to moisten the surface of the seed-raising mix in the pot. If you overwater the seed, it can rot.

We did not put holes in the base of these pots so they can now sit on the windowsill. Check the pots each day to make sure they are not getting too hot or dry. After a couple of days your seed will start to sprout. When you are ready to harvest your crop, just use scissors and cut across the plant stems level with the top of the pot. If you have used pea seeds, they will grow again and you can get a second helping of pea shoots. Once you have used your crop empty the potting mix and plant stems into the compost bin and start over again. I look forward to seeing photos of your tasty caterpillar garden sandwiches.

Each year, the first Sunday in March is recognised internationally as Children’s Day, and Christchurch is marking the occasion with the return of the beloved Streets Children’s Day in its new venue at Air Force Museum Wigram from 10am–3pm on Sunday 1st March.

Run by the Children’s Day Planning Committee, Streets Children’s Day is dedicated to celebrating children, reminding adults to do something special for the small people in their lives, and providing the perfect opportunity for families to take part in events alongside one another.

All activities are free. This includes bouncy entertainment, a climbing tower, plenty of have-a-go sports and obstacle courses, pony rides, face-painting, maze, story-time and more.

Live entertainment for preschool- and primary-aged children will be highlighted on our performance stage, and the ever-popular Teddy Bear’s Picnic on the MORE FM stage will be another centrepiece attraction.

Plenty of Streets ice-creams will be on sale on the day. The event is part of the Garden City SummerTimes festival, is Smokefree and dog-free and will be cancelled in the event of heavy rain.

Anger over traffic light plan

By Grace Cabell RESIDENTS OF St Andrews Hill Rd, are concerned major traffic issues will arise following the completion of the Ferrymead Bridge.

A set of traffic signals at the foot of the hill are planned following the opening of the bridge.

Residents say signals planned for the intersection will cause a backlog of traffic travelling downhill on St Andrews Hill Rd. The $34 million bridge rebuild is due for completion in April this year.

Residents say they were not consulted about the new traffic signals and are angry.

“It’s going to be a nightmare. I have shown this plan to five residents

of the area, asking for their opinions, and they have all quite literally hit the roof,” said Bridget Dadds, who lived on the road.

Another resident Chris Thomson said he had posted information about the issue on various community websites and Facebook pages and had received an overwhelming response.

Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board chairwoman Sara Templeton said the board had asked city council staff to look further into the issue.

“We want to see how the design got to this stage without consultation,” she said.

The city council is due to report back to the community board in March.

“It does look quite tight but I know the city council’s traffic engineers are really experienced so it will be interesting to see what they come back with.”

But city council rebuild and recovery communications adviser Jo Bean said the new intersection plan was approved by the community board and the city council.

“When the works are complete, the intersection will have traffic signals and Main Rd will be widened to four lanes. As part of this, St Andrews Hill Rd and Ferrymead Tce will connect to Bridle Path Rd prior to the traffic controlled intersection at the corner of Bridle Path and Main Rds.”

THE TOUR de France is coming up next month, and I was thinking about entering.

But then I started thinking about all the ‘really busy and important’ things I have on my schedule (like painting my nails and watching funny cat videos).

There’s also the whole roadies spandex situation – something I rate on a scale of attractiveness somewhere between a sock-jandal combo and sneening* – and the fact that 3500km is a really long way.

After internalising the really complicated situation in my head, I opted for something a little closer to home: The Tour de Coffee Culture.

That is how I found myself, along with the better halves of the MOB (men on bikes) group, gearing up for a ride at 8am on Saturday morning.

We each had a ‘tour card’ with a list of 14 Coffee Cultures and two Chain Reaction bicycle stores. The idea is this: Cycle to as many as you can, gathering stamps and freebies along the way.

We started at Coffee Culture Redwood. A few minutes of cycling and we found ourselves seated at a table for five, pondering our first buys.

“Too early for coffee,” someone said.

I ordered a chai, then watched as the barista carefully stamped and dated my tour sheet.

One down.

Our second stop was at Coffee Culture Merivale, which we found after dodging potholes, BMWs and fancy-looking dogs.

We chatted about the day’s plans over banana bread and berry friands: “This is quite relaxing,” someone said.

“We so haven’t earned this yet,” I laughed, gesturing at our crumb-laden plates.

We hopped back on the bicycles and headed down the smooth tarmac beside the railway tracks, to cafe number three.

Two guys in bright orange “Catch a Million” T-shirts whizzed past in a hurry, foldout chairs strapped to their bicycles.

“How’s it going . . . off to the cricket,” one said.

It was around 11am when

we arrived in Riccarton, where mall rats and beeping vehicles conspired against our safe travel. We wheeled our metal steeds.

Stamps three and four – at the bicycle shop and cafe – earned us free coffees and “Bull Bars” that looked like cemented birdseed. I ate mine later and it tasted delicious.

It was at Bush Inn – our next stop – that we bumped into the MOB. They straggled in, looking sweaty and exhausted. They were on a mish to complete all 16 stops in one day – at a total of 140km – to earn themselves pro-elite T-shirts and serious bragging rights (which they did achieve, by the way).

They soon whizzed off, and we continued our leisurely ride, along the Avon River. A Latino band played on New Regent St, the music reverberating through the air.

Our sixth and last stop, at Coffee Culture The Palms, brought us up to 40km. It was hot, and we were tired. Yes, I’ll definitely leave the Tour de France for another day. * Sneening is the word for wearing jeans with running shoes. And on the topic of running shoes, or running, I hope yourself and a friend, have signed up for the City2Surf! My sister and boyfriend are both going to run it – in fact my sis is training every day. The latter – not so much. It’s going to be fun.

My friends at the city council have kindly pointed out it was an internet hoax. My bad.

THE CITY’S earthquakes demonstrate that people generally do not take any notice of the likely occurrence of rare events, Canterbury University natural hazards researcher Professor Tim Davies says.

The February 2011 earthquake was a one in a many thousands of years’ event and there were many more important things to worry about prior to the September 4 2010 earthquake, he said.

Professor Davies is attending and speaking at the United Nations world conference on disaster risk reduction in Sendai, Japan, from March 14 to 18.

The conference hopes to produce countermeasures to climate-related disasters, which are worsening in some parts of the world. Japanese organisers will draw on its experiences of the March 2011 quake and tsunami and help stress the importance of preparation.

“Before the Christchurch earthquakes, large in our minds was an alpine fault earthquake. We started preparing for that potential event in the 1990s and 2000s, because it had a much greater probability of occurring than anything else we knew about. The lesson here is that probabilities do not tell us everything future about disaster events – especially the ones we don’t have much information about.

“The most important disaster for any community is the next one, and probabilities can tell us nothing about that. We cannot know far in advance its type, its intensity or its time of occurrence. What any community needs to know is what the next disaster can do, and pre-

“There is much we do not know about natural hazards, and disasters will always be to some extent unexpected. Therefore risk management methodologies will always need to be supplemented with resilience methodologies if we are ever going to be able to reduce the impacts of future disasters – bearing in mind that rapid increases in population, development and commerce render society ever more vulnerable to nature’s challenges,” Professor Davies says.

Mazda2 builds on success SPECIFICATIONS

THE LAUNCH on the latest generation Mazda6 in 2013 heralded a change of direction for Mazda as car designers and builders, its shape has been the catalyst for future styling.

The sleek, elegant and functional design has trickled down to Mazda3 and now Mazda2, there is a definite family look within the trio and it is working, not only are they desirable cars to look at but the concept is a marketing success and it is collecting a lot of kudos within the industry.

Late last year the Mazda3 was awarded the New Zealand Motoring Writer’s Car of the Year award, the winner meeting a tough criteria of vehicle manufacture against 10 other vehicles all worthy of such a title.

The result pleased me, I consider the Mazda3 a standout car which punches above its weight in the mainstream mid-size hatchback and sedan market. So it was with some enthusiasm that I was scheduled into a couple of variants of the new Mazda2 series – the first out of the blocks was the range-topping Limited automatic.

The range lands here at present in five variants listing from $21,745 for a manual gearbox GLX manual (auto $23,495). The rest sit at $24,245 and $25,995 (GSX) and $28,995 for the Limited.

I’m due to drive the entry-level model soon and I can’t wait to get the feel of that manual shifter, but in the interim the range-topper impressed greatly.

Like its stablemates the Mazda2 Limited is full of kit both for comfort and convenience, and safety. Sitting high on the central facia is a touch screen which is the operating platform for many of the vehicle’s functions. And In Limited form there are many

MAZDA2 LIMITED: Follows the same principal as Mazda3. items of kit which you often don’t find in a car of this price range.

Spearheading the list is satellite navigation, dual zone climate control, comprehensive infotainment network and head-up display, the latter reflects speedometer information safely onto a screen just in front of the driver.

On the subject of safety there is a big list of safety items all packaged into a suite labelled i-Activesense which alert the driver to potential hazards, while advanced traction and stability control networks keep the car out of the trouble in the first instance.

This is a very similar package to that which comes with Mazda3.

Under the bonnet sits a 1.5-litre engine which extends through the range. It is rated by Mazda at 81kW and 141Nm with a claimed 5.2-litre per 100km (55mpg) combined cycle fuel rating. SkyActive is a programme Mazda’s engineers have been working with since the arrival of Mazda6. It is largely a

fuel saving and emission lowering approach to manufacture.

Looking at the figures it’s hard to fathom that you can have such healthy power outputs from a naturally aspirated 1496cc displacement yet use so little fuel in the process. During my testing time the trip computer was constantly listing to a 6l/100km (47mpg) average with 5.4l/100km (52mpg) listing instantaneously at 100km/h, the engine turning over at just 2250rpm in sixth gear.

Interaction between the engine

and gearbox is fluid. There is a genuine willingness to perform while the conventional six-speed automatic has ratios and a shift pattern which promotes use of the high area of maximum torque (4000rpm) and not loading the engine unnecessarily.

If the engine is given some freedom, sequential shifts can be made from steering wheel-mounted paddles or from the shift lever itself, it will respond with a quick surge up the rev counter, peaking at a 6000rpm redline.

Not that that is necessarily, the engine works happily through the mid-range without sounding strained and working freely to usher in healthy acceleration.

A standstill to 100km/h time of 9.5sec is possible, along with a 7sec time to make 120km/h from 80km/h, the latter providing peace of mind highway overtaking.

I took the test car a little further afield than I ordinarily would on a weekend test, it was Waitangi Day so I had a wee bit of extra time and decided a run to Methven through the Rakaia Gorge were good roads to evaluate. The Mazda2 travels quietly at highway speed and it looks after its occupants with fabulous seats and perfect driving position.

There aren’t many corners once the gorge road has been dealt to but the Mazda2 handles with a sporty and spirited feel. Saying that the spring and damper rates are firmed only slightly but such is the lightweight of the model (1047kg) and low ride height (1.5m) there is little transfer of weight under gravitational force.

The Mazda2 has come a long way since the days of the old Demio that has served my mother so well. But even though it is technically advanced, the newcomer hasn’t lost sight of the credentials that have made it so popular. For its money, it is a stunner in terms of specification and engineering excellence.

It also looks dynamic and has me wondering what Mazda can do next with future models, as a company it has surely shifted the goalposts in the three main areas in which it markets. The competition must be very worried.

Blackadder predicts tough battle

By Andrew Voerman SINCE 2009, when they first emerged as title contenders, the Chiefs’ games against the Crusaders have been some of the biggest in Super Rugby.

The two sides have met 12 times since then, and only twice have they produced a blowout – the other 10 have been decided by 12 points or less, including two semifinals in 2012 and 2013.

Along with the Hurricanes, the

two sides are considered the best shots at winning the New Zealand conference, and tomorrow night’s game gives them both a chance to claim an early-season advantage.

Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder said he expected the game to be a tough battle, with both sides playing hard on defence, as has come to be expected in New Zealand conference match-ups.

“It doesn’t matter who they are in this New Zealand conference, they

are always pretty brutal. They’re always great challenges, so this certainly brings the best out of everyone.”

Given the nature of the clash, Blackadder might have been tempted to chuck returning halfback Andy Ellis straight into the fray, but has instead opted to stick with young Mitchell Drummond, who has impressed in the competition’s opening rounds.

“We just felt the best thing for the

team continuity-wise was to start Mitch. He’s done a good job the last couple of weeks and we know that we’ve got Andy there (to come on if needed). So it’s a little bit of a gut feel more than anything. We know Andy’s experienced, but he hasn’t actually driven this team yet – he hasn’t played within our systems.”

Dan Carter and Israel Dagg will both miss the game due to injury, and are expected back after the Crusaders’ bye week.

Sport City teen final qualifier for Women’s Open

CHRISTCHUCH TEENAGER Amelia Garvey was the final golfer to qualify for this weekend’s New Zealand Women’s Open, winning a sudden-death play-off after Monday’s qualifying tournament.

She said it was pretty tough going, especially as she was up againt a good friend, Momoka Kobori, in the winner-takes-all contest on the 18th at Clearwater, “She was the last person I wanted to be playing, because I wanted us both to make it, but it was good in terms of relief that I finally made it.”

Garvey, 14, qualified last year as well, in less dramatic circumstances, and said playing in the Open was a really good experience, even if she missed the cut..

“Hopefully, this year I can try play better and make the cut.”

She’s been paired with Elmay Viking, who is based in Australia, and Kate Scarpetta, from the United States, for the first two rounds, and will tee off at 12.20pm today and 7.40am tomorrow.

“All I wanted was to qualify really, that was the main goal,” said Garvey.

“I just want to have fun now and enjoy the experience.”

SO WHAT have you made of the World Cup so far?

It’s been rather good – hasn’t it?

Christchurch has done its part, from the perfectly kitschy opening ceremony, to the first-up win for the Black Caps over Sri Lanka, to last weekend and the West Indies and England using Hagley Oval to turn their flagging fortunes around, at least momentarily.

It’s been great – but it’s a shame that it is all over down here so soon?

The temporary stands are already being torn down, and will be completely gone by next week;

The fanzone in Victoria Square is also finished, having its final hurrah tomorrow with the New Zealand-Australia clash in Auckland, a game being billed as the biggest sporting event to hit the country since the Rugby World Cup final, and the biggest one-day

international to be played here ever.

I’m heading up to Auckland for the match, and I have to say neither of those descriptions feel like hyperbole. The fickle Auckland weather even seems like it is going to play ball, and the day has all the makings of one that will be remembered for years to come.

Football body hunts for new chief MAINLAND FOOTBALL is looking for a new chief executive.

With less than a month to go before the start of the 2015 season, current chief Mike Coggan has resigned in order to take up a new role in charge of Otago Cricket; his last day in the role will be April 2.

An interim chief executive is expected to be appointed while the search for Coggan’s replacement is conducted in the coming months.

Mainland Football chairman Craig Rhodes said there had been plenty of positives for football in the region during Coggan’s nine years in charge.

“I have personally enjoyed working with Mike as he continually works for improvement and growth. He leaves the game in excellent shape and has been the driving force behind getting our federation in to the benchmark status it is to this day. Mike is highly regarded in our Industry and is often sought after for advice and guidance by other codes. Football loses one of the top CEOs in New Zealand sport today. We wish him all the best for his new role and now seek a new leader to carry the game forward.”

NZ Open ‘the beginning’ for teen

By Andrew Voerman CHRISTCHURCH teen Juliana Hung will be one of 138 golfers contesting the New Zealand Women’s Open starting at Clearwater today.

The 13-year-old Burnside High School student secured her spot with third place in Monday’s qualifying tournament – where she shot 74 – and will surely make quite a sight on course, playing alongside 39-year-old Englishwoman Georgina Simpson, and 24-year-old Swede Lina Boqvist, two tour professionals, teeing off at 9.41am.

The star of the field is world No 1 Lydia Ko, who as a 12-year-old in 2010 was the youngest ever entrant in the Open, a feat matched this year by Aucklander Bohyun Park.

It’s clear that Juliana is a small fish in a big pond at the Open, but her typical teenage shyness is a welcome relief from the steel focus seen on so many of her competitors.

Asked how she was feeling, in the midst of a whirlwind week where she’s only managed one day of school, she said she was nervous, yet excited.

Her father usually carries her bags, but stood aside on Monday, as Hung qualified for the biggest tournament of her fledgling career.

“Before I always caddied for her, but now she’s said maybe she needs to try to be independent.”

A friend will be doing the job today, but Jack and the rest of Juliana’s family will be watching on with pride.

“It’s really a big tournament. It’s just the beginning. I think she will try her best,” he said.
