Residents angry over bridge traffic light plan

BY GRACE CABELL Residents of St Andrews Hill Rd, in Ferrymead, are concerned major traffic issues will arise following the completion of the Ferrymead Bridge.

A set of traffic signals at the foot of the hill are planned following the opening of the bridge.

Residents say signals planned

for the intersection will cause a backlog of traffic travelling downhill on St Andrews Hill Rd. The $34 million bridge rebuild is due for completion in April this year.

Residents say they were not consulted about the new traffic signals and are angry.

“It’s going to be a nightmare.

I have shown this plan to five

residents of the area, asking for their opinions, and they have all quite literally hit the roof,” said Bridget Dadds, who lived on the road.

“There has been a lot of people commenting who are really concerned.

“It’s so flawed it’s not funny.”

Concern over fleeing passengers after crash 384 0600

It is unknown whether passengers who fled the scene of See Inside: a shuttle crash in Gebbies Pass are injured.

Lincoln deputy fire chief officer Roger McLenaghen attended the crash at 4.45pm on Monday, February 9.

He said the driver lost control and veered across the road and into a ditch.

The shuttle bus was carrying 12 passengers when it crashed between Gebbies Pass and Kaituna.

Three people had been taken to Christchurch Hospital following the crash.

Canterbury District Health Board spokeswoman Amy Milne said the patients were now stable.

Mr McLenaghen said two ambulances and one paramedic were called to the scene.

“One person was ejected from the shuttle and there were concerns with one other person who was still in the shuttle and seriously injured,” he said.

He said there was a number of passengers who got in cars and went to the airport.

“It’s a bit of a concern people left without us knowing if they were okay. We believe they were tourists,” he said.

St John southern ambulance spokesman Ian Henderson said it was challenging job.

“I understand we took four patients to Christchurch Hospital ED – two serious, one moderate, one minor. One of the serious patients was taken by helicopter, the rest by road ambulance.

“There were 12 patients all up but several of them departed the scene and headed to the airport and we did not assess or treat them.”

“We treat those things as confidential. He has returned to work and was unhurt in the crash,” he said.

He said the company’s own investigation had shown “nothing untoward.”

“We think it was a case of having a long drive period, and rain and oil on the road.”

Mr McNoe said the driver was “fine, but obviously shaken and in shock from the whole incident.”

“We want to see how the design got to this stage without consultation,” she said.

The city council is due to report back to the community board in March.

“It does look quite tight but I know the city council’s traffic engineers are really experienced so it will be interesting to see what they come back with.”

But city council rebuild and recovery communications adviser Jo Bean said the new intersection plan was approved by the community board and the city council.

“When the works are complete, the intersection will have traffic signals and Main Rd will be widened to four lanes. As part of this, St Andrews Hill Rd and Ferrymead Tce will connect to Bridle Path Rd prior to the traffic controlled intersection at the corner of Bridle Path and Main Rds.”

New board member selected

Denis Aldridge has been voted in as the newest member of the Lyttelton-Mount Herbert Community Board.

Mr Aldridge (right) and Jed O’Donoghue ran for the position which was left vacant by board member Jane Broughton last year.

Ms Broughton, who was deputy chairwoman, resigned because she believed the city council was running a poor operation.

Mr Aldridge said he was looking forward to bringing a fresh perspective.

“I have a reasonable track record for getting things done. I’ve been here 16 years and think it’s an amazing area.”

Mr Aldridge, who lived in Governors Bay, said he would be pushing forward infrastructure needs for the area.

“They hold the community together,” he said.

He said he would also be focusing on environmental issues, particularly around the Living Springs area.

Results showed 1579 votes (34 per cent of eligible voters) had been received.

Mr Aldridge was the highestpolling candidate in the board’s by-election, receiving 869 votes against Mr O’Donoghue who received 716 votes.

Mr Aldridge will be sworn in at the March 18 community board meeting.

Each of the city’s eight community boards comprises five directly-elected members, along with their ward’s elected councillors, who represent and act as an advocate for the interests of their community.

Voting closed on February 17.

A grant of $1250 has been approved from the Akaroa-Wairewa Community Board’s discretionary response fund to the Akaroa Harvest Festival Board. The grant will go towards this year’s festival. The grant will be used for promotional materials, venue and rubbish bin hire and entertainment costs.

Top price for giraffe

A fibreglass giraffe painted by Mt Pleasant residents Llew Summers and Robyn Webster sold for $17,000 at the Christchurch Stands Tall charity auction. The zebrapatterned giraffe named Zirraffe fetched the top price on the night.

The final total raised for all 92 giraffes was $475,650.

Repairs delayed

Ramahana and Huntsbury Hill wastewater pipe repairs have been delayed between a section of Ramahana Rd between property numbers 27 and 45. Work was scheduled to commence on Ramahana Rd in the week beginning February 9. Due to a change in the construction programme this work has been delayed until further notice. Before work recommences this year affected residents will be notified.

BRIGHT SPARKS: The Akaroa Volunteer Fire Brigade has welcomed three new members to its team. A barbecue was held last Sunday to welcome new firefighters Dylan Bryan, Ollie Rutland-Sims and Kaj Christensen and to remember the Akaroa crew members who supported the Christchurch crews during the February 2011 earthquake.

Sea captain making waves in music Hamish ‘The Captain’ Thorpe began independent record label Lyttelton Records alongside Ben Edwards after the September 2010 earthquakes. Reporter Grace Cabell got to know the sea captain and what this year brings for the label.

Hamish, can you tell me a bit about yourself?

I’m 36 and live in Lyttelton, but I’m originally from the North Island.

So how did you get your nickname, The Captain?

My profession is as a seafarer.

I am the captain on the vessel Claymore II. I’m communicating this to you while you’re out at sea – what are you doing out there at the moment?

I’m currently 300 nautical miles away from Pitcairn Islands in the southern Pacific Ocean. Claymore II is a small general cargo ship mostly engaged in supplying Pitcairn Islands but we pick up other supply and expedition work also.

I’ve been at sea roughly 15 years.

Sea stories would be a whole different conversation!

What is it that drew you to Lyttelton?

I sailed in to Lyttelton for the first time in 2008 on an offshore tugboat.

When I arrived I met great people and the town seemed fantastic.

I drydocked another ship there in 2009. In 2010 I moved down permanently.

For those who might not know about Lyttelton Records, can you provide a bit of an overview as to how you both came up with the idea?

Delaney Davidson and I had

been talking about how this area needed a record label prior to the September 2010 earthquake.

When the quakes happened, Ben Edwards and I started talking about a live music sound venue encompassing his studio, but also including a label.

That morphed in to just a record label.

We originally just wanted to release vinyl records and wanted to be an outlet for local bands that otherwise would not get released.

Now we’re just over two-yearsold and have released seven albums.

Is Lyttelton Records a paid job?

My business partner Ben Edwards and I don’t’ draw a wage from Lyttelton Records. He is a full-time and highly sought-after recording engineer, and I go to sea six months a year.

Without our jobs, Lyttelton Records would not exist.

How did you end up in the music industry, do you have a musical background?

Yes, I have been actively playing in bands in Lyttelton since I arrived there. I also ran a DIY warehouse venue in Providence (United States) in the early 2000s.

Have you had much support from New Zealand musicians since starting?

We have had really good support from a huge amount of people.

What artists have been released through the label?

So far the artists have been Delaney Davidson/Marlon Williams with his albums Sad But True 1 and 3, Asian Tang, Tiny Lies, Aldous Harding, Will Wood, Devilish Mary and the Holy Rollers.

What would you say has been the most successful album to come out of Lyttelton Records?

Sad but True 1 did extremely well. Aldous Harding’s album was also really well received, but everything that we have put out has been well received and has sold well.

A lot of that has to do with the quality of the artists, but also all those albums have been recorded

and produced by Ben Edwards, and he is exceptional at what he does.

Where do you see Lyttelton Records going?

Well we got pigeon-holed as a country music label. That is not true at all.

Our latest project is the Seven Inch Club, where you prepay for six 7in records a year.

You don’t know what the records are but every two months an original New Zealand record arrives on your doorstep, not available anywhere else.

So can you recommend any upcoming artists coming out from the label?

Into the Void’s live 12in record will be the one to get in 2015.

Also, everyone on the Lyttelton Records Seven Inch Club.

Do you think Lyttelton has a different musical scene than the rest of Christchurch?

Christchurch has always had an extremely strong live music scene.

I don’t think it matters what side of the tunnel you live in – if you’re good you’re good.

There are awesome bands in Christchurch and also some awesome bands in Lyttelton too.

Do you think the city’s music scene has changed post-earthquake?

The main difference to me postquake, bearing in mind I had only just moved to the south when it happened, was losing venues such as Al’s Bar and El Santo for example.

The people running those venues had worked so hard to build them up, and at the point the quake happened, Christchurch and Lyttelton had the best places for artists and bands to play in New Zealand.

Sumner skate area gets support from community

For those who might not know, can you explain a bit about this process?

The main difference is that those records are cut in ‘real time’ on a vinyl lathe as oppose to a record press. It’s a really cool process.

Do you see vinyl as making a comeback?

I don’t think vinyl ever went away.

I’ve been buying records since I was 17 and no matter where I’ve lived in the world there have always been record stores.

It will be a sad day when a kid in a city can’t go to a local record store and flick through the bins.

We’re really lucky in Christchurch with such as Galaxy Records, Penny Lane Records and Soldana.

Vinyl fans need to remember to support these stores. Use it or loose it!

I get the feeling if you had to pick vinyl over a CD it would be vinyl. Why is this?

All the vinyl I bought all those years ago still plays to a high standard.

I’ve lost or scratched most of my CD’s.

Also, Ben Edwards will tell you that you have to compress files so much to fit on to CD format that you lose sound quality.

So you’ve been described as an audiophile: a person enthusiastic about high-fidelity sound reproduction. Would you say this is correct?

I’m not sure. I love listening to

So what will this year bring for you, Hamish?

This year is going to be about the Seven Inch Club for Lyttelton Records, plus a couple of new albums.

Other than that I’ll be at sea and kicking around Lyttelton.

Sumner residents say they are looking forward to having a world-class skate area in their village.

Clothing brand Levi’s have chosen Sumner as the location for their next skate project in Australasia.

Hagley-Ferrymead Community Board chairwoman Sara Templeton said it would be great for the community.

She said the board was keen to hear what residents thought about the project.

“It fits in nicely with the Sumner Village Master Plan,” she said.

Shoreline Youth Trust coordinator Brooke O’Neill said many of the children who came into the youth centre loved skating.

“There is such a big skating and surfing culture in Sumner I think it will be amazing,” she said.

Sumner Community Residents Association community development co-ordinator Marnie Kent said the consultation process provided a great opportunity for the community to work out the pro’s and con’s.

“Personally I think a skate area will be great for the young people,” she said.

“People may want to talk about the possibility of having cameras inserted and putting signage up,” she said.

The cost to build this skate area would be funded entirely by Levi’s but the city council would provide the land and on going maintenance for the site.

Residents, community groups and business would be consulted to find out whether they support or do not support the construction of the project.

The location of this skate area was not part of this consultation, and would be placed on the grassed area opposite the corner of the Esplanade and Marriner St near the public toilets.

City council’s unit manager for parks Andrew Rutledge said they were thrilled to be approach by Levi’s with the proposal.

“This is an awesome opportunity for the local community to have such a facility in their village.”

Levi’s marketing manager for Australia and New Zealand, Nicky Rowsell chose the location after making a visit to the city in the middle of last year.

“Seeing first hand the devastation caused by the Canterbury earthquakes from 2011, I knew that Levi’s could play a positive role in the rejuvenation of the city and its community,” she said.

This project is only the fifth initiative of its kind to be created

by Levi’s globally.

Public consultation on the proposed Levi’s Skate Area will run until March 16.

A drop-in session will be held at the Esplanade site on March 7 from 10am to noon.

The city council has encouraged residents not to miss out on the opportunity to make a submission.

Long-awaited Norman Kirk Pool opens Lyttelton Primary School pupils were the first to take the plunge at the new Norman Kirk Pool.

Children had a ball last weekend at the official opening on Friday, where the pool has reopened for one week only, before being closed for the season.

Following the pool’s opening the city now has a full complement of outdoor pools for the first time since before the February 2011 earthquake.

Work to rebuild Lyttelton’s only public swimming pool began in June last year and involved replacing the quake-damaged pool, changing rooms, office plant and equipment.

Repair work was also undertak-

en on the pool site’s earthquakedamaged retaining walls.

The new pool meets 100 per cent of the New Building Standard.

Director of city council facilities and infrastructure rebuild David Adamson said this moment had been a long time coming for the Lyttelton community.

“Before the quakes, the Norman Kirk Memorial Pool would attract more than 7000 visitors during the summer months, so it’s been an absolutely key facility for Lyttelton which they’ve had to go without for four years.

Its reopening is a milestone in Lyttelton’s rebuild and rejuvenation, and it couldn’t come soon enough.”

“We’ve managed to get it up and running just in time for the tail-end of summer,” Mr Adamson said.

“It’s a great way to see out what’s been a great season for the city council’s pools, both in terms of weather and in terms of the reopenings around the city.

“We’re also looking forward to the return of the school and pre-school children who have always been great supporters of the Norm Kirk facility.”

Scarborough Paddling Pool was the first of the city council’s outdoor pool rebuild/repair projects to open this summer, and was shortly joined by Waltham Lido Pool.

Boxers battle it out for Sumner community

BY KYLE KNOWLES Les Salter was creamed by his old pal Tim Hobbs in the Placemakers Fight for Sumner charity boxing match on Saturday.

The 63-year-old Sumner Ice Cream Parlour owner was so dominant over his opponent the fight was stopped early.

The night was a successful one held at the Sumner School hall with close to $100,000 being raised for Sumner organisations and clubs.

Sumner Rugby Club had a big involvement on the night with four members stepping into the ring with two members winning and two losing.

Sumner Rugby Club’s Liza Sparrow said without the ongoing support from the community they would not have been able to get sports clubs back up and running after the earthquake.

In the third fight of the night Sumner School parent Scotty Fletcher prevailed over Sumner Running Club’s Keith Tracey but it was not easy.

Fletcher’s wrist dislocated twice during the bout but he was still able to fight on and managed to win.

He was not able to train in the lead-up to the night and was not given a chance of winning but fought through the pain to deliver a stand-out performance.

In fight four, Sumner rugby stalwart Gareth

D’Almeida stepped in at the last minute to fight Yoan Tresfield of the Sumner Community Group after original opponent Aaron StanleyJoblin failed a medical examination due to high blood pressure.

Tresfield won the bout.

The other winners on the night were Sumner School parent Sarah Sugrue over Kylie Thom of Sumner Gardens, Colleen Itterman of Sumner Bowling Club was too good for Sumner Surf Life Saving Club’s Alice Dimond and Sumner Fire Brigade’s Michelle Ward beat Sumner Fuse’s Jackie Stenberg.

Club helps kids hit the surf

Sumner Longboarders Club has spent a day helping more than 30 disabled children give surfing a go.

The event on February 22 was part of the Flight Centre Foundation Halberg Surf Programme, and gave the disabled youngsters the opportunity to experience surfing at Sumner Beach.

The volunteers from the club all received training from the Halberg Disability Sport Foundation to give them the skills and confidence to support the participants.

On the day the Flight Centre Foundation also donated an adjustable beach wheelchair to the Sumner Longboarders who will gift it to the Canterbury Sports Equipment Library to ensure physically disabled young Kiwis interested in surfing can continue to participate.

This equipment will enable wheelchair users to be able to traverse beaches and roll straight into the water.

Big drop from December The Real Estate Institute has released its latest figures, which show 4841 properties sold in January, up 2.6% on January 2014 but down more than 30% from December.

The national median price was $426,000, up 6% on a year earlier.

REINZ chief executive Helen O’Sullivan said the data showed a typical summer slowdown in turnover, although the drop from December to January was bigger than normal because December was such a

strong month. Canterbury’s median price was $400,000, the same as December and up $30,000 from January 2014.

All regions recorded a decline in sales volume compared from December to January, with Canterbury/Westland recording the largest decline of 40.9%.

Dwellings took a median of 42 days to sell in January, 10 days longer than for December, reflecting the usual pattern over the Christmas/New Year period.

Fun in the water at Estuary Fest McCormacks Bay residents made the most of a chilly day at Estuary Fest 2015.

The festival on February 14 included a number of activities such as bumper boats, crazy bikes, a ferris wheel and even bathtubbing – kayaking in a bath.

Current world champion bathtubber Tony Bain who brought the event to Estuary Fest said he saw it is a natural fit for the festival.

“It involves water, it’s a lot of fun and it’s a little crazy,” he said.

“It is officially the only time that you are meant to have the

water on the outside of the bath tub,” he said.

At the festival, participants who entered the Grand Armada sailed from Mt Pleasant Yacht club to the McCormacks Bay site.

This event was led by Christchurch Yacht Club’s Rapanui rescue boat.

“It is a perspective not often experienced by local people. We aim to encourage more people to explore and appreciate our estuary environment and this is what Estuary Fest is all about,” she said.

Volunteers sought for St John first response unit

HISTORY: Another $450,000 will be needed to complete the former Loons building rebuild in Lyttelton.

Funds slow theatre rebuild

Funds have dried up two-thirds of the way into the rebuild of the former Loons building in Lyttelton.

To finish rebuilding the theatre at 16 Canterbury St, the Lyttelton Working Men’s Club need another $450,000.

The building, which will be renamed following completion, would consist of a 170-seat theatre and community events centre.

Lyttelton Working Men’s Club president Nev Walker said so far they

had raised $1.1 million.

He had hoped to have the 110-yearold heritage building re-established by the end of the year.

For the past 70 years, the Loons building had been the Town Hall of Lyttelton, and was a big part of the living history of the port.

It was built in 1905 to replace immigration barracks burnt down in the 1871 great fire of Lyttelton.

He said it was now vital to get backing from the community.

“We need donations of materials, time and energy. That’s the way we’re going to get it done,” he said.

He said the club was so far only running at half the estimated cost, which had all come from donations.

The venue was used as a popular theatre for four years prior to the February 2011 earthquake.

So far $480,000 had been received from the club’s insurance, $250,000 from the Earthquake Mayoral Relief Fund, $150,000 from the Canterbury Community Trust, $60,000 from the Lotteries Grant Board, $40,000 from the Todd Foundation and $28,000 from the city council heritage incentive fund.

St John is starting a first response unit in Lyttelton – and it needs the support of the community to make it work.

The FRU will be based in the town and provide immediate emergency medical support to the community.

Chairman of St John Banks Peninsula Area Committee Pete Dawson said there was a need for one in the area.

“This is about providing the best possible care for the community of Lyttelton,” said Mr Dawson.

“We do have an ambulance based in Lyttelton, however due to workload this ambulance is often attending incidents in Christchurch.”

Mr Dawson said the Lyttelton ambulance attended around 420 incidents every year.

“We are starting the FRU to help support the front-line ambulance. It will be an incredibly important resource for our community.”

St John acting territory

manager Steve Price said the new unit will be crewed by volunteers.

“These members of the community will be trained to first responder level, and will be able to respond to emergencies in the Lyttelton area.

“They will be able to provide some immediate emergency care to patients, but won’t transport patients.

They will, however, remain with the patient until backup arrives,” he said.

Mr Dawson said it was important the Lyttelton community backs this initiative.

“We need the support of local people. We need volunteers for this vehicle, otherwise we will struggle.”

Mr Dawson said there are also opportunities for local businesses to support the FRU and he is happy to discuss options with them.

Sumner are in the box seat to win the senior A two-day cricket title.

They are at the top of the ladder after four completed rounds and still three to go. Addington are second, but Sumner hold a five point buffer on them.

In the last round, they demolished New Brighton by an innings and nine runs.

That put them in first place, but they are on the back foot after day one of their latest match.

On Sunday, Sumner did not do themselves any favours against Southern Districts at Beckenham Park.

Southern Districts batted first, making 141 all out. In reply Sumner could only manage 102, after being 34/6 at one stage.

In their second dig, Southern Districts are 28/2 heading into day two this Saturday.

Sumner finish the season with a home game against MerivalePapanui and an away trip to Richmond in the final round.

Meanwhile, the other local club Heathcote have a big job ahead if they are to contend for the competition title. They sit in fourth position but are 18 points back.

One of Canterbury’s brightest athletics stars faces a race against the clock to be fit for the national championships after a nasty fall last week.

Canterbury representative Alex Mander was competing in the junior decathlon at the national Combined Events Championship in Hamilton and during the pole vault it all went horribly wrong.

His run up and take off did not go quite to plan which left him suspended 4m above the ground.

“I didn’t take off quite right and I got to the top of the jump but then fell into the box. I usually slide down the pole but I didn’t want to damage my ankles”.

He managed to get half his body back down on to the mattress but slipped off and fell on to the hard concrete injuring his tailbone.

He went for an MRI scan last week to discover the extent of the damage with the worst outcome being a fracture.

This has put him in doubt for the national athletic championships to be held over March 6-8 in Wellington.

“I’m still looking at the nationals but it will be disappointing if I don’t make it,” he said.

He was on course to win the decathlon before the fall which also ruled him out of the Canter-

bury championships held over the weekend.

In spite of the injury he soldiered on and managed to finish second but was in a great position to win the junior decathlon before the fall.

He missed out on gold to Wanganui’s Max Attwell by 181 points.

The pole vault was his specialist event and was confident heading into the meet after unofficially breaking the Canterbury age-grade record recently posting vault of 4.4m.

He could only mange 2.8m with his injury however.

Before the fall, he was on fire posting personal bests in the long jump, shot put, 400m, 110m hurdles and the discus.

The injury comes at a bad time of the season but Mander said he still has big goals for the future.

He said his major goals are to reach the 2018 Commonwealth Games and the 2020 Olympics.

Pole vault is a discipline which has seen increased participation recently with numbers jumping from single digits to double figures at the Papanui Toc-H Club which Mander competes for.

He set up a Givealittle page to raise funds for new poles to be bought from the United States.

The page has raised more than $1300 and new poles have been ordered so Mander can train with high-quality equipment.

School achieves top results Sumner School pupils have excelled in the sporting arena.

The big winner was Makyh Koekemoer who claimed four medals at the New Zealand kayaking Championships two weeks ago.

He won two gold medals in the under-14 K4 200m and 500m and two silver medals in the K1 1000m and 2000m tyros section.

He also finished fifth in the tyros K1 500m race.

Makyh is a member of the Arawa Canoe Club, which finished second overall at the championships.

Bella Lister was picked in the Canterbury under-15 A softball team which starts its South Island tournament tomorrow in Blenheim and runs through until Sunday.

Bella adds selection in the softball team to already representing Canterbury agegrade sides in netball and touch rugby as her achievements so far.

FOOD Barbecued salmon with spinach palusami and a chillied sweetcorn salsa Ingredients 400g Salmon 1 Lemon 1 Red chilli 1 Corn cob 2 Onions 2 cloves Garlic 8 Spinach leaves

1 Extra virgin olive oil 1 Balsamic vinegar 1 to taste Sea salt 1 Cracked pepper 1 to garnish Flat leaf (Italian) parsley 1 cup Coconut cream Directions Salmon Place the salmon fillets on a dinner plate and season well with salt and pepper, a third of the garlic (crushed) and all of the lemon rind.

Refrigerate until needed.

Corn salsa Slice all the corn off the cob (precooked) into a small mixing bowl.

Add half the chopped chili, juice of half the lemon and half of the chopped onion (or shallot if preferable). Add a tablespoon of olive oil, teaspoon of balsamic and a third of the garlic. Season with salt and pepper, mix well and refrigerate until needed.

Spinach Palusami Place the other half of the

onion in a small saucepan with the spinach and coconut cream (freshly grated and squeezed is best but you can substitute tinned), bring to the boil, then season with salt and pepper. Keep warm till needed.

To assemble Place the salmon on the grill to cook, turning them over after 4 to 5 mins and cook for a further 3 to 4 mins. Scoop 2 tablespoons of palusami. Place the salmon fillets on top. Drizzle with the corn salsa.

Green bean and cranberry salad Serves 6

Ingredients 1 clove Garlic ¼ cup Red wine vinegar 1 tsp Caster sugar 1 to taste Sea salt and cracked black pepper 250g French green beans, trimmed ¼ cup Pine nuts, toasted ¼ cup Dried cranberries, sweetened Directions Place the vinegar, garlic, sugar, olive oil, salt and pepper in a bowl and whisk to combine.

Cook the beans in a large saucepan of salted boiling water for 2 minutes or until tender.

Drain and refresh under cold water. Place on a dish and sprinkle with the pine nuts and cranberries.

Drizzle with the red wine vinegar dressing to serve.

Busy C’s Preschool in Lyttelton is turning 20 and will hold a celebration this Saturday from 1-4pm at the site on Voelas Rd. The cake cutting will take place at 3pm and there will be live music and entertainment. All past, present and future friends are welcome.

To go to a fitting and see the children being able to stand and walk is heart-warming and of course it does wonders for their self esteem and physical condition.

Lions around the world are very involved with Sight for Kids and this programme has recently expanded to Sight for Kids Turkey and Sight for Kids Kenya.

This involves running projects to do vision screenings and eye health education.

This will help the 20,000 children diagnosed with visual impairment in Kenya and the 150,000 in Turkey.

This programme has already screened more than eight million in India and nearly 40,000 in Nepal and nearly 50,000 in Malaysia.

On the local scene Ferrymead Lions collect, sort and classify used spectacles before they are sent overseas.

So as you can see, Lyttelton Lions Club is just a tiny cog in a big wheel of humanitarian efforts to help the disadvantaged.

I hope you managed to get to some of the SummerFest activities which have just ended in Lyttelton.

Our club ran a barbecue at the Pirates at Corsair Bay day and that was a lot of fun.

I have just read our latest Lions magazine and it is wonderful how New Zealand Lions are helping in their communities.

They have worked with Johnson & Johnson Vision Care to help millions of children see more clearly, helped to have books written in Kenyan, held a Youth Forum, built a playground in a primary school and held health and fitness projects. Congratulations to NZ Lions.

One project we contribute to is the country-wide Children’s Mobility Fund which supplies Hart walkers to children with cerebral palsy.

A trail run or walk over farmland near Akaroa will be held on Sunday, March 1 at 10am. The 10km full course also has a 6km or 2.5km option. The event is being held to raise funds for the new Akaroa Health Hub. Tickets are $35 for adults or $10 for children.

Coffee Culture Le Race The 100km Christchurch to Akaroa Coffee Culture Le Race will start again in Cathedral Square on March 21 at 8am for the first time since the February 2011 earthquake. Drum festival

The Little River Campground and Manaia Native Habitat are hosting a drum festival from February 28 to March 1. Tickets cost $55 for a weekend pass including one limited camping fee. The weekend will consist of performances and dance workshops.

Sunday Bandstand

The next Sunday Bandstand will be held on Sunday, March 1 from 12.30-2pm with the Canterbury Brass at Cave Rock, Sumner. The free event is held in different areas of the city each week until March 29.

The annual Sumner Rocks Village Street Party will be held on Sunday, March 1 from 11am6pm in the Sumner Village streets and community green.

he history of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery has been examined in a new book written by Dr Anna Crighton.

Dr Crighton launched her book, which is her PhD thesis, before an audience of invited guests at the City Council’s function room.

Entitled English, Colonial and Maori: The Changing Face of the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, Christchurch, New Zealand 1932-2002, the book illustrates the relationship of art between the English colonial and Maori societies as well as the gallery’s often controversial dealings with the Christchurch City Council. Speakers kept the listeners entertained with anecdotes from the past decades of the gallery’s existence through the Great Depression, war and earthquakes.

Celebrating Success Powhiri On Monday, Linwood College had the pleasure of welcoming their new students to the school. Nearly 200 students were welcomed to begin the next stage of their education.

3D Printing in the Classroom

Linwood College Horticulture Development

Not long ago 3D printing seemed like a futuristic fantasy but now 3D printing is the latest technology to revolutionise education.

Linwood College is fortunate to have a number of 3D printers for students to use across a variety of areas.

Students are able to create 3D objects using a range of computer applications. These are then created through a process called slicing where the 3D objects are sliced and printed, one layer at a time, using a substantive filament such as plastic, metal or rubber. The educational benefits of 3D printing are many and include enabling students to actually explore the objects they have created rather than having the objects just sitting inside the computer screen.

Allowing students to have their creations in their hands, where they can inspect and physically manipulate them, helps to bridge the gap between the digital and the physical world. Design students can print their designs, chemistry students can print out models of molecules, robotics students can print out new parts, geography students can print topographical maps and technology is even at the stage where food technology students can print in edible materials such as chocolate.

As a result of its partnership with Lincoln University, Linwood College has been fortunate to have Don Royds, a senior tutor with Lincoln University’s School of Landscape Architecture, design a new setup for Linwood College’s horticulture area.

The process consisted of Don meeting with the students and teachers and discussing the best use of the area to enable it to meet the needs of all students, from the year 7 and 8 students who grow vegetables for their own use, through to the senior students who will be involved in a wide range of horticultural studies including collecting native seeds from the local area and growing these plants for future planting.

The area incorporates a range of garden beds, along with shadehouse and propagating areas and seating, thereby enabling the environment to be a living laboratory where the students can mix and mingle while they learn.

Vex Robotics Season

Introducing Head Boy and Head Girl for 2015 Waiariki Paraone is a proud and enthusiastic Head Boy of Linwood College. Wai brings culture and passion into this school. He has a very approachable personality and likes to get along with both teachers and students.

Wai sees Linwood College as a place where you learn to grow as a leader and as a person.

Sammy O’Hara is immensely excited to represent Linwood College as Head Girl this year. A keen saxophonist and performer, Sammy is very passionate about the arts and is eager to continue to foster them at Linwood College. Sammy is instrumental in supporting the school spirit and working among students to see a number of new opportunities introduced to the college. Sammy also looks forward to being involved in the Linwood community and further developing the culture of opportunity, service and pride in Linwood College.

Linwood College teams are frequent competitors in Vex Robotics scrimmages, regular competitions run by Kiwibots New Zealand and aimed at inspiring a passion for science and technology.

Linwood College has a regular team who practise after school, building and refining their robots, honing their abilities and developing essential skills like problem-solving, leadership and teamwork. These are skills that help the students develop a strong foundation for future careers in robotics and engineering. To the casual observer it may look like these students are just having a whole lot of fun but it is also clear they are developing for themselves a strong foundation for success in careers that are essential for New Zealand’s future.

The 2014/2015 Canterbury Championship was held in Christchurch on Sunday, 15 February. The Linwood teams scored highly with their team currently ranking second in Canterbury. Throughout the Vex programme tasks are split according to the abilities and interests of the students and in the coming season George Armstrong will be in charge of programming with Josiah Garner and Cole Barry having responsibility for building.

Linwood College is extremely fortunate to have on their staff Diane Atkins who manages the team. Diane has been recognised recently for her commitment to education by being awarded the Asia New Zealand Foundation Scholarship for 2015. Through this scholarship Diane has been fully funded to represent New Zealand at the Tokyo Science and Technology Forum.

Technology Provision Linwood College is now in the second year of providing the technology provision programme to Heathcote Valley School and Parkview Primary School. Each Monday morning students from these schools are able to access the specialist environment and skilled teachers Linwood College is able to provide.

Linwood College recognises the importance of ensuring they have the resources and equipment required so they can deliver a high quality technology provision in the rapidly changing world that is the 21st Century. There is little doubt that the technology provision environment is quite different from the one these children’s parents experienced. Along with the more traditional food technology and materials technology students now learn robotics and programming.

The Christchurch Pop Up Concert Series Cabaret La Vie

Tucked down a narrow back in Sumner, not far from the beach, is Sumner Community Centre which will be transformed on March 14th to an old time, back street blues bar. The intimate setting creates the perfect ambiance to sit back and appreciate an eclectic cabaret of local, world class performers.

The event offers a vibrant, informal grass roots theatrical environment echoing Ma Bell the early cabarets and clubs of Post War Europe and American prohibition era. Fun and frivolity are the names of the game with artists showcasing individual works and in collaboration with other guests. The audience won’t really know what to expect as although the individual acts are highly polished professionals, organiser Isabella (Izzy) Miller Bell Aka Ma Bell says there will be some surprises when the performers begin to improvise.

Cabaret La Vie will feature Ma Bell herself. She is a talented singer, songwriter, story teller and eloquent interpreter of song - in fact, a multi-faceted

artist with a passion for music performance and the stage. She will be featuring her stage character the mysterious Madame Tragedie alongside well known acts including renowned Christchurch singersongwriter and Graham Wardrop much acclaimed saxophonist Carmel Courtney who creates a jazzy, electronic, Latin sound. Graham Wardrop Jon Maxim Hooker & James Wilkinson are three of the country’s finest contemporary guitarist composers. They join the line up to create, a veritable guitarists’ paradise.

Another familiar name on the bill is Elizabeth Braggins who combines silky (and often sultry)

Her highly original versions of well known songs are an Elizabeth Braggins eclectic mix of genres highlighting her classical, jazz, pop and rock backgrounds. She will be joined by her daughter Olivia Hope Wilson who is an up-and-coming singer in her own right.

The Christchurch Pop Up Concert Series was launched in 2012 as a way to bring arts and music into the heart of the community. It is supported by Christchurch Creative Communities Funding.

Could it be time to DETOX New born babies in the USA have been found to have over 200 toxic chemicals in their umbilical cord, many of which are known to be correlated to issues such as early puberty, obesity and cancer.

T

hese chemicals enter our body through pesticides in our food, plastic food and water containers, air pollution, skin care products and many other sources. It is virtually impossible to not be affected to some degree. Luckily, our body has a detoxification system in place. However, when stress levels are high and nutritious food intake is low, in combination with genetic factors, our bodies can get overloaded with toxins and becomes a prime environment for disease.

What to do? We can help our eliminatory systems and bring nutrients into our bodies that will support our health and detoxification process. The first step is

colonics. The colon is the last holding point of the waste matter of all our eliminatory systems and organs, such as the lymphatic system and the liver. Therefore, if we are constipated, not feeling properly empty after a visit to the toilet, or waste is sitting in pockets or on the sides of the colon, the waste then festers and toxins are reabsorbed into the bloodstream, burdening the body even more.

This in turn can make you tired, cause hormonal issues (because the liver is overloaded) among many other issues. Having a series of colonics and letting go of all that waste will alleviate every organ and eliminatory system in the body, so they can take a break and offload

what needs to be let go of.

Another important eliminatory system is the lymphatic system.
